Tucked away on George St, Barista Cafe has been a feature of the Palmerston North cafe scene for more than a decade. In more recent times however, it has made a big splash as not only a great place for a coffee, a meal and to meet with friends over a glass of wine, but as an up-and-coming entertainment venue. The headline acts; the very talented owners, Steve Sayer and Gayle Shirley.
Than Meets The Eye

Recently I was fortunate enough to revisit an old favourite of mine, Barista Cafe, on George St and was welcomed by a nice surprise. Steve Sayer, with his partner Gayle Shirley, have revamped the cafe into a fresh and modern hangout. A place for people to meet, eat and spend their afternoon (or evening) catching up, in an inviting, cozy environment. With an upgrade to the décor to create greater ambience, Gayle says that “Steve and I, still have many plans in the works to really make this a great place, but we’re well on the way”. Clearly this is a work in progress, as Steve quietly paints the beautifully engaging mural on the wall opposite. Steve, a man of many talents, from painting to interior design (and everything in between) is quite mesmerising as he chalks, tweaks, refines and paints this rather elaborate mural, depicting many a storybook character - aptly chosen from their proximity to the Pamerston North City Library building (they’re right underneath the first floor). Steve’s painting, by popular demand, is now a feature of the Saturday night entertainment. But that’s not all! New to the cafe is a delectable menu of “more robust and hearty food”, stunningly prepared and presented. The top quality cuisine, which can only be described as phenomenal, is only matched by the remarkably friendly and professional service of the fantastic team of Wait-staff, Baristas and Chefs. Another surprise to our Saturday night experience was to be serenaded by the vocal talents of the lovely Gayle Shirley. Her un-intrusive musical style gently caresses the night. Singing a variety of old favourites, to modern day hits, there isn’t a song that Gail doesn’t have in her repertoire. With a strong musical theatre background, Gail’s well trained voice is pitch perfect and just a delightful accompaniment to the evening. In addition to our Saturday night experience, Barista offer Antique High-Tea, accompanied by live music on Sunday afternoons from 3-5pm. Utilising a collection of charming fine-bone China, High-Tea is presented with full Silver-Service. A unique and enchanting way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.
