MULLALY SKATEPARK INC. PROJECT PROPOSAL
InTRO Our mission is the same as it has been since Mullaly Park first opened it’s ramp area in 1987. The mission is to provide an outlet for the community to have a safe place for the youth to get outside and be healthy, creative, and off of the streets. John Mullaly who the park is named after had a similar mission and wanted to make sure people had a safe place to go enjoy themselves with in the city and because of his work numerous NYC parks exist
Mullaly Skatepark Inc. - This non-profit organization was formed by Brendan Vail and the riders of the park to help maintain the area. A number of fund raising efforts have been made as well as a great deal of attention to our cause. Dellavalle Designs - known for building some of the best bike courses in the USA, Dellavalle Designs will be assisting with an eco friendly design that is appealing to the eye and to ride. Dellavalle has built courses all over the east coast including parks in Queens and Brooklyn. Art Start - Art Start will be helping provide art and educational programs at the park to the youth. They are a non-profit that works with upcoming artists and local youth in NYC.
HISTORY The park was first opened in 1987 and quickly became a hub for BMX bike riders who constructed, built, and maintained the park, as the Bronx has always been a meet up for riders of all types going to different parts of the city or beyond. Quickly the park became one of the most well known locations for the upcoming lifestyle which would come to be BMX freestyle. It is close to public transportation as well as a number of highways, and sits in the shadow of the iconic Yankee Stadium. Over the years the park has hosted some of the most notable events in the history of BMX freestyle, and has been visited by top riders from around the world. Always changing set ups and one of the best courses in the country put the park on the map during the late 90’s
and early 2000’s since then the park has seen many different setups with a number of different ramps. The past few years of the parks existence have been rough but the riders all come together to keep the park running and founded a non-profit organization to benefit the park. This park allowed underprivileged youth to meet riders from around the boroughs, states, and the world. It Provides the local rider network a place to grow and branch off into exploration and adventure within the five boroughs and beyond.

NON PROFIT Mullaly Skatepark Inc. was founded in 2012 after the riders wanting to come together and be more organized about taking care of their space. The local riders that frequent the park came together and hosted a number of events to raise money and draw attention to our cause. We are currently in our third year being incorporated and looking forward to continuing to help give back to the community and provide an environment for the youth to interact socially with others. Always looking for donations, we would like to raise enough money to be able to revitalize the area in a way that will engage with the users in the best way possible, as well as having programs for the youth to educate and help them pursue their goals.

We would like to work with the parks department as well as our other donors to continue to provide and positive place for the community that keeps kids safe. The park is a stepping stone into the careers of many creative people who came through it’s gates. Numerous entrepreneurs such as Animal Bikes owner Ralph Sinisi, Rob Morales owner of Cult Bikes, 5050 Park owner and NYDAC owner Ed Pollio, Pro Rider/ Dah Shop owner Tyrone WIllimas, and DIG Magazine Editor Rob Dolecki are among many that turned their passions into careers.

For the current year we are planning on working with Citizen’s Committee again, as well as Art Start a non profit that works with emerging artists and at risk youth, in addition to numerous Action Sports brands to help reach our mission. For 2014 we want to expand out event as well and have a series with one in each borough throughout the summer to eventually bring everyone to Mullaly for the final event. By bringing together the riders we are strengthening the bonds between people, exposing them to new experiences we are making an impact on the communtiy
FUTURE PLANS We would love to see Mullaly be home to one of the most notable and well renowned parks in the world once again. Our plan is to create a new course layout that is built by Dellavalle Designs and features ecological benefits such as storm water drainage, plants, as well as the course taking more organic shapes instead of the typical hard lined park that have existed in the past. Hosting a number of programs would be a big way that we want to help the community and bring more people into the park.
Running various programs at the park out of the building at the skatepark will help us educate and promote a healthy lifestyle. We would like to utilize space in the building at the park to make our program have a homebase where we can cbetter connect with the community. Bike Safety and Maintence, Art Programs, Nutrition, and Environmental studies could all be worked into programs at the park. Working with the artist organization “Art Start� we would like to bring in emerging artists and have them work with the youth and use the course as a canvas.
