“I am your chance. Whatever will come, will come from me. Tomorrow is won, by winning me. Whatever I am, you taught me to be. I am your hope, I am your chance, I am your child.” Barry Manilow
Pronunciation: /in’vest v. 1. To commit resources in order to earn a return. 2. To make use of for future benefits or advantages. 3. To involve or engage. 4. To furnish with power or authority.
Letter from the President and Principal Dear Friends of Notre Dame High School, The theme of this year’s Annual Report is “Invest.” To most of us, the word connotes images of Wall Street, where players risk their dollars to support corporations in the expectation of a positive financial return. Lawrence Road is a long way from Wall Street, and an investment in our school is certainly not going to provide a financial dividend to anyone. So why have we chosen that word as our theme? Once upon a time at Notre Dame, we didn’t speak of investments. “Fundraising” from bingo games, card parties, candy and bake sales, car washes, 50-50 raffles and super market coupon sales provided what the labor of nuns, the generous support from the diocese and a modest tuition could not provide to educate our students. But times have changed. Today our building is 57 years old, subsidies and the good sisters have gone, and that once modest tuition now approaches $12,000. Today we continue to benefit from a variety of traditional fundraising activities to supplement our tuition base, and revenue from those sources is certainly important to us. However, that revenue accounts for less than 16% of the $900,000 we raised this year from all Advancement activity. The rest has come from nearly 1,500 members of our community who have made a decision to “invest” in people, programs and facilities. They make that investment strictly to benefit the students of Notre Dame High School without expectation of financial or material return on their investment. That young lady on the facing page who stares so wistfully out the window of our library dreaming of her future is one of those students. She is a proud member of a student body here that donates nearly 60,000 hours of Christian service to her local community each year. In time, she will become one of the 99% of ND graduates who go on to higher education each year earning millions of dollars in scholarships. She will understand her ethical responsibilities to our environment and will have a clear sense of the principles her country was founded upon and its role in world politics and finances. She will know how to work collaboratively and to think outside the box. Her SAT and ACT scores will be well above the national average. She will be more likely to participate in athletics, more likely to appreciate the arts and will be better prepared for academic rigor than her colleagues from most other schools. Most importantly, she will have a moral compass, a firm basis in faith and a clear understanding of the love Christ has for her that will help guide her through the difficult journey of life. She is our future. Our investors know this and have invested in her and others like her by giving generously of their time and their treasure to Notre Dame High School. Like you, they know that their investments will be used wisely to advance the mission they have come to know and believe in. Over the last four years, their investments in ND facilities have enabled us to upgrade science labs, athletic fields, infrastructure and places for spiritual enrichment. Their investments in ND programs have provided new and exciting courses encompassing global studies and incorporating new technologies and have expanded our arts and athletic offerings. Their investments in faculty have led to improved salaries and more professional development opportunities for our teachers. And their investments in our families have enabled us to increase financial assistance to those in need by over $600,000 annually. In return, our investors expect a dividend that is much greater than a candy bar or a chance to win a TV set or a car. Student by student, investors provide opportunities they expect will change lives, save souls and ultimately build a better world. They have heeded Christ’s encouragement to “give as freely as you have received,” and they understand the residual good feelings and blessings that always come with their investments. Those are their dividends. One need only look to our outcomes featured in the pages of this report to believe that investing in NDHS truly makes a difference and is a sound investment. On behalf of those of us who toil joyfully in the vineyards here on Lawrence Road, we thank you for all your investments in our students; your prayers, your involvement and your financial participation. In the inimitable words of NFL Super Bowl Coach Tony Dungy, “You may now begin changing the world.” Sincerely,
Barry Edward Breen, President Notre Dame High School

The Notre Dame High School 1957 Society was established to recognize our friends who in the past have included Notre Dame in their estate plans or wills. This planned giving society will have many valuable options for the donor and NDHS. Donors may make “the gift of a lifetime,” while at the same time gain significant tax advantages. Choices available include: bequest by will (making a perpetual gift to ND), designating Notre Dame as a full or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan, or establishing a charitable remainder trust, which allows immediate tax savings to the donor. Leaving a legacy for the students of tomorrow gives you the ability to play a significant role in the development of their high school years at ND. Your tax consultant, financial advisor, or attorney can give you more detailed information about developing an estate plan or determining the planned giving option that best fits your needs. Thank you for considering “making the gift of a lifetime.”

A gift in memory of someone you love can be a very meaningful way to contribute to Notre Dame. Memorial gifts are directed to the Annual Fund. The family may decide to designate the donations to a more specific area, for example tuition assistance, athletics or faculty development. If you would like additional information, please call the Advancement Office at (609) 882-7900, ext. 165.
Faculty, Staff, and Administrators
Notre Dame is extremely proud of its faculty, staff and administrators. Their dedication, support and commitment to our students are extraordinary. We are blessed by their efforts each day. This past year, 71 ND employees with 84 gifts contributed nearly $25,000 to our Annual Fund Campaign – a true testament to the belief they have in NDHS and its advancement initiatives. We greatly appreciate their monetary contributions. For all that they continue to do in their classrooms and beyond, we say, “thank you.” Anonymous Roberta Anderson John and Jennifer Antinoro Meghan Apriceno John Archer Courtney Ashe Cindy Bannon Joanna Barlow Leonard and Deborah Berzinski Barry Edward Breen Ann Shelly `74 Brown Kevin Callahan Julie Campo Anna Carella Bob Carroll Debbie Chiarello John Clay Kathy Leszczuk `80 Clemency Christopher Collier
