“We, the Class of 1961, leave this the Canticle as our hymn of praise to Our Lady. May its lyrics ever sing of an Alma Mater where we have learned, lived and loved.”
Dear Notre Dame Family, For 61 years, young men and women have lived the promise described by that first ND class. I am excited to share this annual magazine celebrating just a few of the highlights of our 2017–2018 school year. Here you will learn more about great minds such as Joseph Karnicky ‘61, ND’s first Valedictorian, who changed the world for the better by inventing the first nebulizer that could be used for analytical purposes. ND and US Naval Academy grad, David Liedtka ‘14, is now off to Stanford to find answers for cyber security in artificial intelligence. Lisa Matar ’96 Lenihan, steps into the role of Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction at ND. ND Alums who are now ND moms and dads watch their children play in Barb Major’s 50th field hockey coaching season or play for Coach Drulis’ 300th win. These young men and women live the happiness that is ND at Homecoming and in “Shrek”. They prove their potential in Experior’s research projects and internships under the guidance of ND grad, Bonnie Clawson ‘96 Milecki. They reach out into 21st century cultural dilemmas in conversation with author, Angie Thomas. Hayley Horvath‘18, Matt Lequang ‘18 and Miguel Jiminez-Vegara ’18 set new records as State Champs. All-Americans, Seamus Harding ’20 and Ava Scudillo ’19, show what it means to live what you love. Love has always been Notre Dame’s greatest lesson. In a beautiful letter, Karnicky advised Class of 2018 grads to, “Be brave. Love each other. You’ll do fine.” These grads experienced the power of God’s love on ND’s 100th Kairos Retreat. They shared this love in over 13,000 hours of service completed for those in need. They saluted the love shown by veterans in the celebrations they created for those who served and as the brand new Class of 2022 climbed the ramp on August 29, they were embraced by the love of over 50 Peer Leaders who welcomed the newest ND family members home. Notre Dame is a vibrant community of more than 1,000 learners and 120 faith-filled and dedicated educators who each day guide our students in learning living and loving. In these pages, we also celebrate the blessing of alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, administration and friends who so generously supported our school last year, allowing our faculty to do what they do best and our students to succeed. And, the future of ND children is planned, designed and created by Board and Board Committee Members who are passionate about seeing that the promise made 61 years ago continues. Barry Breen learned, lived and loved within the Notre Dame Family for 17 years. He called so many of us to join him in the journey and the joy that is Catholic education. He made sure we celebrated well the 60 years that have been this “hymn of praise to Our Lady,” our Notre Dame. And, this June, he retired into the next phase of what Oscar Romero called, “ the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work.” The Family of Notre Dame offers prayers of deep gratitude for Barry’s faith-filled leadership. Relax and enjoy learning a bit more about Notre Dame as you read this magazine. Reflect a bit on the love that lives on here. Say a prayer of gratitude to Our Lady, Notre Dame for all that has been and has yet to come! May we “ever sing of an Alma Mater where we have learned, lived and loved.” With love and prayers,

Each student’s purpose – or legacy – is unique, stressed JoAnn Tier, Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, in her address to the Class of 2018. “You matter because you are a miracle created by God,” she said. “In His infinite wisdom, He knew that you would play a part in life’s encounters. You have a purpose in this world that only you can fulfill,” Tier stressed. Barry Breen, Notre Dame’s first president, said, “To honor those who most directly passed our tradition on to the next generation, we invited our alumni parents to present diplomas directly to their graduates.” Breen is retiring at the end of this academic year. Among those who shared this special moment was Elizabeth Vernon, Salutatorian. “Thirty-five years later, my dad gets to hand me my diploma today,” Vernon said of her father, a Notre Dame graduate. “We are so blessed that our parents have provided us with the same faith-based education that they experienced.” Also in the spirit of legacy, the Class of 1968 was invited to lead the procession of soon-to-be graduates to begin the ceremony. “We are proud to have members of our Golden Irish 50th anniversary class serving as honor guard,” Breen said. “Class of ’68, we honor you for all you have achieved in your lives, and for all the good you have done for our Church and society. Allow us to thank you for setting the standard, and for continuing to support your school’s mission.”

The members of the club who participated in the Niceties Boutique were able to help 21 of the students at the high school. Notre Dame Niceties is a club with the motto of, “Young women empowering young women through kindness.” Throughout the fall, the members of the club gather prom dresses to add to their inventory. In the spring, they attend up to four high schools in New Jersey with girls in need. At the boutiques, they help the girls of the high school in helping them to find a prom dress. In addition to dress “shopping,” club members were able to compliment and laugh with and make the girls feel important. Notre Dame is proud of the service, dedication and kindness the members of the Niceties Club have shown to the community.
100th Kairos Retreat Notre Dame celebrated the 100th Kairos retreat this past December. Kairos is our four-day senior retreat program which leads seniors through an intense selfreflection on their lives, their relationships and choices. This retreat helps our students to connect with themselves, their classmates and their God in a special way which, we believe, is why over 85% of our senior class participate in this optional retreat each year.
ND Athletes Build Body and Spirit Last January, Coach John McKenna, along with ND Chaplain Father Jason Parzynski, began a Bible study for the football program. I t started with 18 participants and has grown to over 30 since the summer. Coach McKenna explained that the goal is not to make a better football team, but to strengthen the faith of the individuals. “You’ve got to develop the total package, and that’s a strong mind, strong body, strong faith and strong life,” said Coach McKenna. Each meeting opens with a prayer from Father Jason and follows with discussion about specific Scripture readings. I t concludes with Coach McKenna and Father Jason reflecting on the passages and prayer. This fall, the Bible study expanded to the Girls Soccer team and Coach McKenna hopes other teams will start one as well. 14

Hoops for Hope The Notre Dame community joined together on November 15 for the 1st Annual Hoops for Hope charity basketball tournament. The idea for a charity basketball tournament began with the ND SHADES Club. They wanted to work together with other clubs and organizations within Notre Dame towards a common goal. After Hurricane Maria and the devastation it caused in Puerto Rico and Dominica, the club brought the idea to life. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Hurricane Relief Fund to aid residents who were impacted by Hurricane Maria. Kemi Olaleye ’19, SHADES Club member, has an uncle and cousin who live in Dominica and their home was destroyed. “They lost everything,” Olaleye said. “The devastation is indescribable.” Other students and faculty also have ties to the area. Despite many wrestlers from all across the Mercer County area demonstrating their best moves, one Irish wrestler stole the show. Notre Dame senior, Joe Schneider, accomplished a feat that hadn’t been captured in 10 years at ND, as he recorded his 100th career victory. Joe will continue to ride this wave of momentum next year at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. At Stevens, Joe will showcase both his wrestling and strong academic abilities at the college level for the Ducks. The Irish finished 4th in the league, with a record of 16-7-2. Drulis has coached at Notre Dame since 2001 and will lead the Irish baseball team again this spring.
Matt Lequang ‘19 won his first individual State Championship in the 200-free, beating Mainland High School’s Glenn Lasco by almost 1.5 seconds. After training for months to improve his time, Lequang knew it was “all mental” and told himself he wanted to be faster - and that’s just what he did. He raced the 200-free with a time of 1:38.09. Matt has committed to the US Military Academy at West Point to swim. Congratulations, Matt, and keep swimming Irish Strong! 21

He was named All-American both years by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. In 2017, he broke the pool record at Montgomery High School, where the State Championships are held with a score of 591 points. In 2018, he broke his own record Seamus Harding ’20

Ava was named All-American by US Lacrosse, the sport’s national governing body. Ava scored 17 goals and had 17 assists for a total of 34 points. However, she is known more for her prowess on the defensive end of the field and for controlling the draw.

2017/18 Events Alumni Homecoming Event Last fall, Notre Dame welcomed alumni back to campus for a reception prior to the Homecoming football game against Paul VI. I t was a fabulous event filled with fun, laughter and lots of memories with over 120 people in attendance. Thank you to all of those who attended for making it such a special evening.
Annual Auction Our 2017 Annual Auction was held for the first time at The Trenton Country Club in West Trenton, NJ. The auction honored a devoted member of the ND community, Monsignor Walter E. Nolan. I t was a wonderful evening filled with friends gathered together with spirited bidding for a good cause. The auction raised $65,000 to help complete the replacement of the visitor’s bleachers on Nolan Field. Please save the date and join us for our 31st Annual Auction to be celebrated on Saturday, November 17, at the Trenton Country Club.
31st Annual Golf Classic Last May, 125 golfers set out to play 18 holes of golf on the picturesque links of The Bedens Brook Club in Skillman, New Jersey. I t was a beautiful day, and we raised $37,000 to support the refurbishment of the Joe Wroblewski Memorial Track.
Golden Irish With great pride and joy for their Alma Mater, the Class of 1968 came together on June 10 to lead graduates from the Class of 2018 into the CURE Insurance Arena. The Golden Irish had a busy 50th Reunion weekend, which included an evening reception at The Stone Terrace in Hamilton and brunch and tour of the school after the commencement ceremony. The 50th Reunion class also generously contributed $1,000 to plant a new cherry tree on school grounds.

TRENGTH AND SPIRIT STRENGTH AND SPIRIT STRENGTH A
The Auditorium Renovation is Underway
F
or the past 61 years, our auditorium has been the central gathering space for the Notre Dame Family. I t is our first and final gathering place. Here, students come to discover Notre Dame at Open House and seniors go out into the world from their Baccalaureate Mass.
I t has become the sacred space for our monthly school Liturgies since 1957. Our auditorium is the site of ND family celebrations. We hold awards assemblies and honor inductions. We crown Mr. and Ms. ND. We applaud our teachers of the year, and we recognize our most valuable athletes. The Notre Dame Auditorium is known far and wide as the showcase for our extraordinary performing arts programs. Thousands of appreciative audience members have come each year since 1957 to experience the wonders of Les Miserables, My Fair Lady, The Little Mermaid, Fiddler on the Roof, Godspell and so many other outstanding performances. I t is a wonderful space with one of the largest stages and seating capacities in the region. However, it was built without air conditioning and can no longer accommodate the needs of our expanded performing arts offerings. I t has not been remodeled since it was built in 1957. That is all about to change. This summer, extensive renovations began in earnest. The overhaul will provide central air conditioning, new seats, new flooring and new house lighting. The stage floor will be replaced, new rigging will be hung and our lighting and sound system will be updated. A limited number of original seats are available for purchase. Please contact Maggie Kelly, SVP – Director of Institutional Advancement (kellym@ndnj.org), for more details.
Take a Seat or Light the Night for Notre Dame! Fundraising for this project continues through November. While all gifts will be greatly appreciated, gifts of $500 will have naming rights to a new auditorium seat , and a gift of $900 will purchase a new LED stage light. Please visit www.ndnj.org/page/support for more details and to make an online gift today.
