A new atmosphere filled the corridors of Notre Dame this year , one created by our new administration's willingness to co-operate and communi cate with the students. They worked eagerly and closely to produce a strong school spirit. New teachers sparked fresh ideas and introduced new clubs. Both the faculty and administration dealt more directly with the student body in hope of understanding and solving our many and varied problems.

31ue and White Day On October 1st at 1:38 P.M. our student body streamed into the gym for the first pep rally of the school year. No student expected what he would soon witness. The teacher-sponsored event filled the gym with laughter as members of the male faculty, princ i p路a I inc I u de d, executed a touch down stirred by the strangely attired pom-pom girls, who bowed and bayed before the howling audience. Uncle AI Verdel coached the "team of teams" who limped and straggled to his commanding voice. The hysterical crowd finally calmed to the voices of co-captains Will Place and Dave Hart, who promised a victory over St. Anthony's. Notre Dame went wild with spirit on Blue and White Day. Each homeroom tried to outdo the other but the arrangement of desks in the N.D. form, and streamers and balloons galore claimed the senior prize for 12E. 11 E made a final touchdown with the judges, by using their imagination to the fullest. They converted their room into a football field complete with press box and ticket office. The "most spirited sophs" or so lOA was named, hung soccer, football, and track shoes from the shades. The over powering "frosh" tied. 9B expressed its enthusiasm by singing our "fight song" when the judges entered, and displayed a football field on the ceiling. 9E displayed banners and balloons. All classes worked together to make Blue and White Day one of the most spirited ever.

After school on Thursday, December 13, a few Varsity Club members and cheerleaders were seen sporting blue hats ... well, caps ... would you believe beanies! Yes, this year Notre Dame initiated December 14 as Beanie Day, the day of our first basketball game, when students and faculty alike donned their " domes of spirit" in support of the Fighting Irish cagers. Excitement was aroused everywhere and everyone from the Iowl iest fresh man to the rowdiest senior anxiously awaited the pep rally scheduled for the end of the day. The gym steamed with emotion as the teams were introduced by their respective coaches. The day ended with a feeling of victory and heads bared as our caps came off for the Irish.

The conclusion of Homecoming weekend was signalled by the Fall 路Sports Semi-Formal. Co-sponsored by the Spirit Club, Varsity Club, and the Cheerleaders, the dance's theme was "Time of the Season." Elections were held for the kings of fall sports. Rick Hofmann was chosen Mr. Soccer, Will Place and Dave Hart tied for Mr. Football honors, while co-captains Mike Franko and Kevin Behan were tied for Mr. Cross-Country.

Although it may appear that there have not been many assemblies, in reality we have had more than in previous years. Most assemblies have been held on class levels and so it may seem that they are few and far between. The quality of the assemblies has improved greatly. One reason for this was the formation of an Assembly Committee composed of Mrs. Hilt, Sister Katherine, Sister Charlotte, Sister Jos~. and Mr. Panella. They planned assemblies which would be of real interest to the students and not merely an alternative to going to class. To aid seniors in preparing for life after graduation, programs were held on the eighteen year old vote and regulations concerning the draft. A representative from Rider College spoke to the junior class about advanced courses which will be offered next year as electives. Highlighting freshman-sophomore assemblies was a lecture on lunar geography and future plans for the exploration of the moon by a spokesman from RCA. "Hook, Line and Sinker" starring Jerry Lewis, the only movie sponsored this year, was attended by all class levels.

Thanksgiving is an impatiently awaited time of the fall season for Notre Dame and this year many students worked to rally spirit for the annual turkey day clash with Trenton High's Tornadoes. The stu dent council arranged for a bonfire on the day before Thanksgiving , featuring fire-twirling Beth Furch. This event started the hope of victory stirring in our blood for the upcoming contest. Unfortunately the victory was not to be, as the Irish fell in a tough 14-9 contest, failing to recapture the traditional brown jug- at least for another year.

Lincoln, Kennedy and King

38

George Tibbet and Lori Stevens brought to Notre Dame a living tribute to three of our greatest martyred civil rights heroes. On Tuesday, January 25, the memories of Lincoln, Kennedy, and King were re-born in the hearts of those who may have forgotten what these men stood for. Alternating meaningful readings and quotations with rousing songs , these two talented personalities captured and held the attention of the audience. Upon leaving the assembly, the students carried with them a feeling that the belief in and concern for mankind displayed by these . three national heroes will not die, but will continue to grow.

An N.D. class ring is more than just a gold band with a yellow stone. It is a symbol of the memories, friends, and experiences of four years in high school. Though the ring may someday be pushed to the back of a jewelry box, the day it is worn for the first time is a day of pride and excitement. This year the juniors were given their rings on February 11. To make the day more personal and meaningful, the students planned the Mass and organized the ring ceremony themselves. Class president, Kathy Freda and Father Thul spoke to the juniors on the significance of the rings they were about to receive. Following the Mass, the blessing and the distribution of the rings, the difficult task of finding seventy-three friends to turn the ring began.

41

Sister Eleanor Yavarone was onto something. Mr. Robert Edwin arrived and threw the switch. With the help of Father Nolan, Father Kiernan, the Religion Department, many faculty members, and a few concerned students they helped us fulfill the hope of the day, "Come Together". We tried to learn what it meant to be real. Mr. Edwin came on February 17 and 18, hoping to fill in what seemed to be lacking in our halls- a spirit of community. Through his music, readings and reasoning, our rap sessions, a film "The Hangman", and a concluding liturgy, we all learned how we could be one and still retain our individuality. Then we returned, each of us a little more knowing and a bit more concerned, to bring it all back home, home to Notre Dame.

This year, for the first time in many years, students were required to take all midterms with no exemptions. N.D.'s scholars crammed four months of work into a few hours of study while assuring themselves that they would pass with no trouble at all. They grumbled and complained, but to no avail , and the hard reality of exam week finally arrived. When the trauma was over, students were relieved to know the week of sweaty palms , cheat sheets, and loss of memory had ended. Meanwhile faculty members grouped in lounges and classrooms to share the labors of grading.

What's New in '72? The arrival of Sister Joan marie and Father Thul Brought NO lots of changes and many a new rule. Last year summer uniforms for girls were new, Now the boys have a summer dress code too. The president of Kools is so happy he could singGirls can now join in the circle smoking. Gum chewing is forbidden- that 's been the rule of thumb, But now student 's mouths and desks abound in chewing gum. Our halls inspire cries of disgust and often shouts of "ugh! " To combat the trash , on our walls are signs, "Don't be a litterbug". Time was when crewcuts were the style boys would wear, But another new look in '72 was the longer and longer hair. Cars, pocketbooks , and kids have been lost in our dark parking lot, Now lights all tall and shiny brighten even the darkest spot. Lest we forget out faculty- radicals every one, They saw these changes coming and wouldn 't miss the fun . The ladies modelled pantsuits and for an added dash , Along with longer hair, the gentlemen could sport a mustache. Sister Claver and Mr. Verde!, our Deans of Discipline Mirrored the atmosphere of our halls- each wearing a smile pin. Change is nice and its good to try something that 's new, Not radical change but little things happened in '72.

The Amish people invaded our auditorium from the first week in February through the end of April. From the beginning of rehearsals in February, "Plain and Fancy" captured the school 's imagination. Director Mr. Joseph Hayes, Musical Director Mr. Frank Jackson, Choreographer Miss Marilyn Hagas and Student Director Mark Ackernnann worked together to make the play run smoothly and to keep even the most temperamental actor happy. The Stage Craft crew, under the direction of Miss Janet Wilson managed one of the most spectacular feats of the production when they designed the building of a barn to be erected on stage by the ensemble.

Fathers' Club

The Fathers Club is a service organization composed of concerned fathers who try to aid and support N.D.'s athletic department. Father Nolan served as the club's adviser and together with the officers Mr. Thomas Yeakle, Mr. Michael Franko, Mr. James Carlin, and Mr. Edward Ungrady, directed the club's major fund raising activities. They included a Valentine's Day Program, a car raffle held in May, selling hot dogs, and ushering at home games. Guest speakers and sports figures spoke during the Fathers Club regular monthly meetings.

Only two school dances were held this year, one sponsored by Student Council and another by the Forum Club. The Student Council dance was held on October 22, when Nantucket Sound played. Entertainment was provided by Eighth Train at the Forum Club Dance on November 12. Disturbances and destruction of school property by students from other schools led to the disappearance of Friday night N.D. dances.

A class trip is one of the memories of senior year that is most remembered. It is a chance for one final trip with the people with whom you have lived seven hours a day for four years . This year the senior class chose a ski weekend, March 5, 6, and 7, as their holiday. Everyone from the expert skier to the lodge herm it found Mount Airy Lodge exciting. Besides skiing, the weekend offered ice skating, snowmobiling, and swimming in an indoor pool.

Sophomore Class Mass January 20, 1972 was a regular school day for most students of Notre Dame. For the sophomores, however, it meant coming together for a Mass to celebrate their theme of "unity". Spirit and joy were an essential part of the Folk Mass which was held in the Choral Room. Sophs and teachers sat on rugs placed on the floor and sang to the tunes strummed by guitarists Lorraine Mannix and Joe Pica. It was an enjoyable experience for those who attended, something which will live in their memories for a long time to come.

Religious Education Program

On three consecutive Tuesday evenings in late October and early November , the Religion Department, under the guidance of Sister Eleanor Yavarone , invited the parents of students to come and learn what the Religion curriculum would present in the 1971-1972 school year. On Tuesday , October 19, a representative teacher from each class level gave an outline on the expected study plan . Parents then asked questions on anything that was not clear in their minds. The following week Brother Dennis Burke lectured on the new theology. Again some parents reacted, this time with more enthusiasm and challenge. Father Nolan 's concluding remarks ended this session. November 2 concluded the three week program when Brother Vincent Gartland brought a panel of students from Saint Joseph High School in Metuchen to present their ideas on religious education in high schools.

Fate rarely smiled upon Coach AI Verdel's Fighting Irish in 1971 as they posted a two win-seven loss record. The highlight of the season was N.D.'s victory over Mater Dei, the game played at night under the lights of the Irish home field. Led by captains, Will Place and Dave Hart and Junior quarterback Jerry Goeke, the Irish downed Mater Dei 17-14. One of the bright spots on the team was sophomore halfback Tom Voyda's three T.D.'s and two interceptions which led N.D. over Princeton 21-7. Voyda was joined in the backfield by senior fullback Frank Przechacki which gave the Irish a fine running combination. All County honors were awarded to Seniors Will Place and Marc Cusato . Honorable mentions were awarded to Juniors Jerry Goeke, Sophomore Tom Voyda and Seniors Chris Enourato and Don Allen. Looking to the future, the J.V.'s posted a 44-1 record and the Freshman a 1-8-0 log.

Although the 1971 Notre Dame Varsity Soccer team did not repeat as state parochial champs, the Irish booters, coached by William "Stu" Clark, still compiled a respectable 9-8-1 final record, going all the way to the championship game against St. Joseph's of Metuchen before bowing, 1-0. N.D. was lead by All-Mercer and All-Area picks Terry Clarke and Rick Hoffman. Other players who helped the Irish cause were Pat Chiavetti, Jerry DiCola, and Mike Bojcun, another All-Mercer selection. The N.D. season was highlighted by many fine performances, but nothing matched the 2-1 victory over number one ranked Steinert on October 15, the only defeat the Spartans suffered all season. On the underclassmen side, the J.V. and Freshman teams compiled 7-6-1 and 211-1 records respectively.

Notre Dame's Cross Country Team, led by captains Kevin Behan and Mike Franko , posted 18 victories , the most ever by Irish striders. An injury to Behan hurt the harriers in midseason and contributed to their second place finish behind Hightstown in the Mercer County Meet, a team they had just defeated the previous week . Coach Ungrady can look hopefully to the future. The J.V.'s matched the varsity with a 18-4 record.

J.V. Wrestling Erratic is the word that would best describe Notre Dame 's Varsity Wrestling team for 1971 -72. Coached by Gary Dambra, the Irish grapplers started by winning their first three matches. The team was over .500 at mid-season when an injury to senior Will Place crippled the team's chances for a winning campaign . Thus the team lost its final six matches to finish with a 5-9 log. Despite the poor finish there were several bright spots. Carl Carella completed the regular season undefeated and Carella along with the recovered Will Place and ju nior Jim Mansfield placed second in the Districts. The three competed in the Regionals for the first time in the team 's history . Other wrestlers who contributed greatly were seniors John Giordano , Tom Fallon , and Gary Butler. The J.V. 's finished 8-6-1, their best record ever.

After opening the season with two disappointing losses, the Irish kegglers, playing their home matches at Colonial Lanes, rallied behind Fran Przechacki to post an eight game undefeated streak. High scorer Antimo Cesaro with a 173 average and Jim Patykula, on whom future hopes rest, turned in consistently strong performances as did Captain Przechacki , the teams only senior.

Track With new coach Larry Kuser at the helm, the 1972 Irish Track team showed improvement over the previous season. Built around a solid nucleus of seniors which included Kevin Behan, Will Place, and Terry Faherty, the track team consistently put out one hundred percent.

Varsity Cheerleaders

This year even freshmen joined in the N.D. movement for spirit as ten girls formed the first frosh cheerleading squad. All squads, Varsity , J.V., and Freshmen, tried to spark spirit in the hearts of N.D. students , despite the apparent apathy of the crowds, shown many times when our teams were defeated and at times even when they were victorious. The cheerleaders co-sponsored the Fall Sports Semi-Formal, raised money to send next year 's girls to camp , and bought new uniforms for the J.V. squad . The girls sold Christmas cards and organized bake sales and candy sales to raise the needed funds . Showing their zeal and originality through all these drives , the cheerleaders hoped that their example of good sportsmanship and school spirit would grow.

~his year the Student Council has not solved momentous problems, made drastic changes or greatly affected the apathy in our school. But they tried in many ways to improve the life of the N.D . student but were often hampered by internal problems. There have been some obvious rule changes , small in themse lved but nonetheless important to students . Mr . Kuser and several active members of the Executive Board worked together to gain among other things, smoking priviliges for girls and a summer dress code for boys. Activities sponsored by the Council included, a Christmas party at the Johnstone Home for Retarded Children , an assembly on the 18 year old vote, an exchange day at Steinert High School, freshman orientation , senior and underclassmen awards assembly , and the design and purchase of a long awaited school sign . Members of the Executive Board were , Peter Walbridge , Bill Rader , Debbie Warasky , Marianne Price and Bob Gauthier. This year's Coronet gave its editors and staff members an opportunity to become involved in all kinds of events . A truer appreciation of journalism was acquired as staff members learned the problems and excitement involved in meeting a deadline. Student opinions and suggestions formed a major part of the six publications. Guy Aquilino , head of the editorial staff , offered an invitation to join in a " cross fire" through the presentation of views from both faculty and students. The pride displayed by Editor-In -Chief Mary Liz Fitzpatrick proved to be justified as the Coronet received a top rating from The Catholic Press Association.

Renascence

This year the theme of Renascence explored the realm of revolution through prose and poetry, clever photography and creative artwork. The free association of ideas and the liberty of expressive thought combined to make this year's magazine the great success it was. Students unlocked their imagination and formulated new concepts that filled this Renascence with the most startling and innovative works in several years. Four Winds

Latin , French , Spanish , and German flourished, through the pens of Notre Dame language students who creatively wrote for the Four Winds. Ed itor-in -Chief Linda Mikita , along with adviser Mrs . Palenchar , provided the basic spirit that encouraged students to submit their conglomeration of foreign articles , cartoons and crossword puzzles . Scholarship, leadership, character , and service provided the guidelines for the mem bers of this year ' s National Honor Society. President Robert Gauthier, with the help of the other officers Rosemary Frascella, Mary Clare Moran, and Melanie Piekielniak, assisted the moderator, Mr. Diamond, in directing the club to a more service-oriented program. Many members gave their time and patience to help slower learning students through a tutoring program. Liturgical Choir And Commission

Led by Sister Susan Cunningham, the members of the Liturgical Choir attempted to encourage singing at Masses. They held assemblies to teach and rehearse new songs and stood bravely in the pit singing and coaxing others to join in. The Liturgical Commission tried to promote a greater interest and participation in liturgical services this year by making them more relative to the daily life of the student. The Thanksgiving Masses and Easter services were successful as a result of the joint cooperation of this organization and the Religion Department. The special planning of the Commission produced the Mass in honor of Vicki Daly, the Junior Ring Day Mass, and Renewal Day Liturgies. Sister Regina Grant acted as moderator of this organization which gave much of their time and energy for the improvement of liturgical experiences for N.D. students.

Forum Club

This year's "old F.C." as President Dave Ecker would refer to the Forum Club , was a melting pot of Fascists, Women's Lib advocates , Polish Nationalists, as well as an assortment of other novelties . Chuck "Flash" De Angelo's favorite rebuttal cliche " Fascist pig" and Michele Vagnozzi 's constant shrieks of " male chauvinst" highlighted the state tournament rehearsals for the club 's oratorical debate and dramatic entries. Many members attained degrees of merit, honor, distinction , and excellence in both the Catholic and National Forensic Leagues. The young orators were Joan Caivano , Cathy Connor. Betty Dynowsk i. The Spanish Honor Society started the year with a special induction ceremony directed by officers Sandra Coppola, Joan Duckenfield, Elaine Kovacs, and Paula Arcioni. Pinatas for orphans and hours of tutoring after school were but two contributions of the society which brought them closer to their goal of greater knowledge and appreciation of Spanish culture. Senior members include: Patrice Garnich, Lorraine Vaccaro , Sharon Shipley , Carol Spehar, and Cathy Funari. With the energetic encouragement of Moderator Mrs. Bryan and President Pat r ice Garnich, the French Club projects were quite a success . Would you believe a pen pal named Pierre? Or presenting one act plays for language classes? And the Mardi Gras was tres bien! Determined to abolish the apathetic feeling toward languages, the French Club confirmed that with a little imagination and a strong spirit, appreciation for the French language, custom~ and history can be attained. A-:::tive officers and members were: Mary Ann McManimon , Vice-president; Karen Emma , secretary ; Barbara Brennan, treasurer ; Janet Cammarata , Mary Clare Moran, Concetta Masiella, Catherine O'Neill , Leslie Smith, Frannie Brooks , Ronald Stewart, Nancy Syzmelewicz , Susan Povlitz, Barbara Ciprietti, Joan Spitz, John Pietras , Patty Bradway , Kathy Betor , Michelle Everett .

German Club Chess Club

The corridor outside A-209 was filled with cries of " check mate " from winners and moans of defeat from losers. Inside , the "b rains " of the Chess Club met every Friday afternoon. Led by co-chairmen Bob Opsut and Nick Shcreier, the boys attended a national tournament in New York in January. The highlight of the year-long challenge games occurred when an underclassman broke Bob Opsut 's undefeated record. Language clubs are often dull and uninteresting, but this year 's German Club was different. How could a club moderated by Sister Charlotte be anything but exciting? Caroling, bake sales , guest speakers and exchange trips to area schools arranged by officers Rick Kazior, Mike Bojcun , Barbara Novak, and Dave Erkobon i helped to make German as interesting as those who study it .

Spirit Club SPIRIT CLUB Under the exemplary guidance of moderators Mr . Robert Bugdal and Miss Janet Wilson , and President Terry Sm ith, the Spirit Club has lifted the school's participation i n sportsmanlike support of athletic activities during the past year to a surprising high. The executive board lent its hand through members Cathy Funari, Joan Mackin , Joan Cai vano, Nancy Shuck and Mary Ryan. This organization has victoriously attained their goals through hard work and an unwavering sense of dedication to our school , sponsoring activities including Blue and White Day , Homecoming, numerous pep rallies , and a student supported Beanie Day that helped to raise interest and enthusiasm for basketball season .

MAJORETTES Representing Notre Dame High School in city and town ship parades , the flashy majorettes also twirled their way through football half times, basketball games and pep ral lies , featuring the fire-flinging Beth Furch. Moderator Miss Grant assisted in providing the girls with a chance to gain helpful experience. Cathy Calamia , as captain , successfully instilled in the girls a sense of pride in how they performed , but more importantly in Notre Dame, whether in victory or defeat. Other members included: Treasurer Ginny Bezek, Diane Behan , Sandy Barlow, Nancy Gagliardi , Mary Skrou pa , Connie DeBlois, Barbara Meskill, Sue Nitti , Barb Zimmer, Kim Cifelli , and Chris Murdza.

Color Guard

COLOR GUARD Led by Captain Ann Lenhardt and Co-captain Debbie Connelly, the Color Guard performed their marching routines with a spirit that infected players and spectators alike. Despite the lack of a school band, the Color Guard, with the help of bands from nearby schools, and sometimes alone, succeeded i n en t e rt a i n i n g the fa n s d u r i n g foot b a II h a Iftimes. Originally twelve members, this year the club had grown to twenty-eight, including the following ten seniors and juniors: Pat Gervasio, Janet Groski, Terri Lane, Barbara Paglione, Vera Perris, Maryanne Piunno, Sue Quinlin, Stacy Theodorakis. DRILL TEAM The Drill Team this year often had to "march to the beat of a different drummer," one week he was from Ewing, the next Steinert, then Hamilton. The girls overcame this obstacle, however, and succeeded in arousing school spirit and in presenting an excellent show for the spectators. Led by captain Judy Osborn and co-captain Sue Stec, the twentyeight members performed at parades and during halftime at football games. Drill Team members were: seniors, Pat Voyda, Kathy Miller, Debbie Oliver, Jackie Huff; juniors, Janice Huff, Marie Pietrow, Pat Mulryne, Kyle Connolly, Paulette Kli minski , Karen Sanderson; sophomores, Nancy Lehmann, Beth Ann Sujansky , Colleen Cashel; freshmen, Joan Osborn, Sharon Rojek , Kathy Price, Kathy Stec, Gail Militig, Donna Walachy, Karen Rouba, Valerie Babecki, Mary Liz Mackin, and Donna Fasoli.

Middle

States

All activities and events at Notre Dame this year were overshadowed by spectre of Middle State re-evaluation and accreditation, which took place in March. Preparation for this upcoming inspection by members of the Middle Atlantic States Association began in September. Throughout the year, following early dismissal for students on Wednesdays, faculty members and department chairmens met and evaluated their respectivE: departments. The official visit by the delegation of 21 teachers, led by their chairman, Mr. Edward Philips, began on Sunday, March 12, with a welcoming dinner hosted by the adminstration and faculty of Notre Dame. On Monday, March 13, the inquisition began as the delegation undertook an in-depth evaluation of the academic and extracurricular activites. For three days, members of the inspection team audited classes, spoke with students and faculty members, and observed the daily routine and events. The delegation filed a favorable preliminary report. 118

Home Economics

If a future Picasso lurked in our halls this past year , the Art Department and Miss Janet Wilson offered him a fine studio in which to learn and grow. Mini-exhibits were displayed throughout the school and students entered various outside contests, often capturing top honors. For example in the Broad St. National Bank Christmas Card Contest , Laurel Daunis received first place. Mr. Jeffrey Baker encouraged the practice and appreciation of many forms of music in his one-man department through an excellent variety of courses. The Choraleers performed at many Christmas activities, including a PTA program at St. John 's Church in Morrisville and in a program sponsored by the Fathers Club . Even our band struck a new note this year with emphasis being placed on the popular blues sound. Has the Male Liberation movement invaded Notre Dame? Maybe not but a few boys have made a name for themselves as the newest members of the Home Economics Department. Although Food Preparation classes are now co-ed, Home Ec. has remained a feminine stronghold , for Sewing and Home Furnishing courses are still all female.

The efforts of Mrs. Margaret Gribbon in developing the Business Department to its full est not only succeeded in improving students' accuracy and efficiency, but also in improving an eager attitude toward cultivating skills. Thirty-eight Business students spread their enthusiasm to the community as active participants in the Distributive Ed and Secretarial Co-op programs. Their newspaper, the " Busi Business Bulletin, " was published quarterly to keep teachers informed of department activities. The acquisition of a new electronic calculator and duplicator added to the department 's competent work .

The theory that English can be more to students than grammar and punctuation was the theme of the English Department this year. Not only were electives enlarged and diversified , but teachers also widened the scope of their regular classes. Advanced placement classes for sophomores , juniors, and seniors and an elective seminar in writing highlighted changes in the curriculum. Mr. Schleck's World Literature classes did non-verbal reports and once filled the entire school with Russian costumes and the aroma of gowompki. Former N. D. student Diane Gribbin, a Fine-Arts major at Rider College, returned to help teach drama classes. A professional make-up man transformed two normal looking drama students into furry , ugly werewolves.

Social Studies

128

Two new courses were established this year in the Social Studies Department under the direction of Mr. Joseph Wroblewski. Sociology for seniors and Latin American History for upper classmen were added to the curriculum to broaden this ever-widening field of study. Capable teachers have successfully instilled in their pupils not only a knowledge of the classroom subject but also a genuine concern for the problems of modern day society. Committees were established to investigate the national, state, and local elections , and the experience gained helped to organize next year 's Student Council elections. Plans are underway to establish more new courses, including Political Science, that will hopefully aid the department in providing appropriate background to the students for successful comprehension of today's troubled times.

Mrs. Mary Palenchar led the drive in making the versatile Language Department more appealing this year and as a result more students than ever enjoyed the benefits of such a high grade department. New variations were used in the classroom as evidenced by foreign cartoons and the interesting tales of Mr. Sciarrotta , Sister Charlotte, Mrs . Bryan, and Mrs. Kaplan of Spain , Germany, and France. The Great Roman Empire was also explored in Latin classes. All this and more showed that the entire teaching staff tried its best to make the study of different languages both informative and exciting.

Guidance Library Believing that students are people and not just I.Q. scores and grade sheets, the Guidance Department tried to become more personal and more relative to students ' needs . Department head Sister Mary Carmel initiated new policies for division of counseling loads among Miss Kathleen Peoples, Sister Mary Alexander, and Father Nolan. While the other department members tried to achieve persona I contact, the department secretary Mrs. Christine Mahon typed and filed all the records and statistics that helped the Guidance Department run smoothly. A wider circulation of reference books, stu dent art displays, and a more relaxed atmosphere characterized the library this year. Mrs. Jeanne Rader and Mrs. Cynthia Clancy, while retaining necessary discipline, worked to foster an attitude less restrictive and more conducive to independent study.

Religion

As a result of last spring's self-evaluation, the Religion Department underwent a tremendous change not only in curriculum , but in method as well. The Freshman and Sophomore classes aimed for a more mature understanding of others. Juniors concerned themselves more with other Faiths, whereas marriage and the family were the key topics for Senior discussion. So that parents would be more fully aware of the reasons behind these changes , a three-part seminar was held in conjunction with the P.T.A. Folk singer Robert Edwin worked with the department and student coordinators to arrange a special program that tried to promote the spirit of true community at a time when student apathy seemed to prevail over student concern. The program was appropriately named "The Community of Notre Dame, Come Together." All these innovations were brought about through the hard work of Sister Eleanor Yavarone , whose dedication and zeal did not fade through the course of the year.

135

Math

This year the Mathematic$ Department has admirably attempted to help students by allowing them to work at their own pace through the institution of a "two track" program . This was conceived especially with college-bound students in mind. Under the direction of Department head Sister Regina Grant, the teachers have placed certain students on in dependent study. They also started utilizing new texts in certain courses and attended lectures on new techniques. Through these channels, the department hoped to be more effective than ever in helping students to overcome the difficulties in this complicated field.

Physical Education

The dividing doors separated the gym into more than just parts of a room ; each end was like a different world. Grunts and groans abounded on both sides. While the boys were groaning during their forty ninth push up, the girls moaned when anything more strenuous than a walk from the locker room was required . Mr. Dambra repeatedly blew his whistle to unglue the eyes of his class from the sixty girls working out their latest polka routine. Ah -so near, and yet so far! Since girls are invading male athletics, possibly in the near future boys may become involved in girls activities too. "Chicken Fat", "Up, Up and Away," and Carole King records may be put on a stereo set and broadcast to both sides of the gym simultaneously .

139

Keeping with the changing times , Sister Wendel in successfully upheld the versatility of the Science Department and its concern with encouraging students' abilities. Field trips , science fairs , and ecological studies , arranged for students from all classes helped them to develop a sense of inquiry. An important pro gram arranged by the department was for the benefit of next year's seniors. The Rider College Director of Admissions dis cussed with the juniors the possib ility of an advanced senior science to assist those students who are so inc I ined. Faced with these advancements , the Science Department certainly has proven to be very interested in helping to produce in quisitive members of tomorrow 's society .

Freshmen changing from "cool" eighth graders to the lowest in the school in three short months ... strange faces and big halls ... lectures on growing up ... crisp, new jumpers and silly ascot blouses . . carrying more books than five upperclassmen put together ... gym class initiation, stolen shoes, wet uniforms, and books in the shower . . too many new names and faces to remember ... discovering upperclassmen aren't really as bad as you thought ... decorated lockers for birthdays ... doing all your homework every night . . . frosh-only sports teams ... first time ever freshman cheerleaders .. . parties at 8:05 on upstairs "B" corridor ... your own pep rally for your own teams ... senior directions to a nonexistant C203 ... enthusiasm for practically anything ... planning revenge on future freshmen ... "Sophomore means wise fool?" ... a warm feeling in knowing you're really a part of the beautiful CLASS OF '75.

Acknowledgments

The Canticle has tried its best to produce for you this chronicle of feelings as well as events of one year at Notre Dame. To complete the framework at our tapestry we would like to thank these special people who as individual strands helped to thread our minds with ideas and stitch this magnificent cloth.

"And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue;" Kahlil Gibran Our deepest thanks toThe Administration - who encouraged our efforts , understood our mistakes and overlooked our crumbs, soda cans, radio, and our friend George. Deans of Discipline- who understood that the hours of work that go into making a yearbook are not only after 3 o 'clock, bli't often study periods and class time as well . Faculty- who co -operated tremendously with our photographers and interviewers, and tolerated occasional late passes and excuse slips. Carole King- who assembled an album with a theme with which we could identify so closely that we made it our own. Screen Gems - Columbia Music Inc. - who gave us the rights to use the lyrics of "Tapestry. " Mr. Frank Ball Jr. and the American Yearbook Company- whose patience , consideration , and instruction helped us to produce these 224 pages . Mr. Kim Knoblauch and Su-Kim Studios - who sacrificed hours of sleep to photograph, develop, and print the spirit of N.D.

Our contributors- without whose financial support the publication of Canticle would have been impossible . The Students- who are the most vital and beautiful part of our tapes try. The editors and staff members- who gave their time, their talent and themselves . Joan- who knows why we say thanks . Mrs. Carol Wood -who offered her time, talent and love, knew " our best " could always be better , and penetrated our hearts with her warmth and Florida sunshine. Sister Patricia- who loved us even when we were awful, corrected us when we were dumb. smiled when we were sad , pulled us together when we drifted apart , and cared so very much .
