IN MR. KELLY WE FIND A FRIEND Notre Dame High School has been blessed with many gifts. We were especially fortunate when an Irish good luck charm by the name of Mr. David Kelly came to our school to teach religion. Mr. Kelly has been a major factor behind Notre Dame's spirit revitalization in every aspect of our school's activities. He is ever present and one of the most enthusiastic participants in any number of school functions, be they football games, pep rallies, or orientations for incoming freshmen. If a poll were to be taken to find the most spirited unofficial cheerleader in the school, Mr. Kelly would be selected first by a landslide. Besides being the senior class moderator for the last three years, Mr. Kelly has contributed significantly to our school musicals as the producer, and he has also served as a moderator oJ the drama club. He has not just been a religious studies teacher in title only because he has participated actively in Father Nolan's Koinonia Club and served on the Chaplain's Council. Indeed he has influenced many of us spiritually as well as academically.

Mr. Kelly's relationship with the student body has been described by many as "not just that of a teacher~" Nancy Cashel, a senior student, describes him by saying that, "He treats each and everyone of us as equals and most importantly as close acquaintances." He has inspired many of us to get involved and to strive for excellence in everything we do. Perhaps an overall synopsis of the general student attitude concerning this dedicated person would be to say that he is a friend. Mr. Kelly has also touched the lives of the faculty and administration. In the past he has served as president of the Lay Faculty Association in addition to working on numerous staff committees. Mr. Bugdal, a fellow -teacher and Director of the Guidance Department, best explains that, "Mr. Kelly is active, concerned, and extremely dedicated to the school." With much care, we dedicate our 1979 Canticle to Mr. David Kelly, so that we may remember him and what he's done for us "always and forever."

LIBRARIAN RETIRES AFTER 20 YEARS For over twenty years Notre Dame has had the good fortune of having a librarian who not only is compassionate and helpful but who is totally dedicated to the cause of educating others. Mrs. Jeanne Rader is retiring this year and she's looking forward to a well deserved rest but we will all sorely miss her valuable services. Mrs. Rader came to our school in 1958. During that first year she taught Remedial English but she later became assistant librarian to Mother Mary Robert. In 1964, she was promoted to the position of head librarian and chairperson of the Library Department. Some of Mrs. Rader's duties have included the direction of the student library assistants' program. This project has given interested students the opportunity to learn the mechanics of library administration and Mrs. Rader has been involved in it for approximately fifteen years. Also, annually,
she presents a library orientation for all of the freshmen English classes. Mrs. Rader has been eager to serve everyone - faculty and administration members as well as students. Many individuals in the school feel that Mrs. Rader's availability in helping them through the learning process has not been surpassed by many people. As one student puts it, "Whenever we can't find something, she will always offer to help. She really knows our library inside and OUt." It comes as no surprise then, that Mrs. Rader has further been described as, "a librarians' librarian." She has created a calm, quiet and bright atmosphere for study and in that way she has enriched us all. Mrs. Jeanne Rader has given her very best to Notre Dame and the superior quality of our library is certainly proof of that. We salute you, Mrs. Rader, and we wish you health and happiness in your retirement.

MR. LOATMAN EXPANDS MUSIC CURRICULUM The Music Department has expanded its curriculum this year. Its primary objective is to provide a fine arts program for students who wish to further their talents and interest in music. Mr. Richard Loatman, the department chairperson, has developed a variety of courses designed to include all aspects of music studies. Some students are in the night or day choir class, while others are studying musical comedy, acting or drama. Piano and voice instructions are also offered for those who are interested. However, education in the Music Department goes further that just the classroom. Annual performances such as "Cabaret," a musical variety show, and "Godspell," this year's school play, enable students not only to apply what they have learned but to gain valuable experience performing in front of live audiences.
The Music Department would not be complete without an instrumental section and the man who assumes that responsibility is Mr. Biancosino . He believes his major problem is that students who come to Notre Dame have very little musical background. In order to compensate for this, he has developed a program, whereby music lessons are given in ten of the area Catholic elementary schools. In addition, a new band booster club has been established under his direction with the purpose of raising money for new instruments, equipment, and uniforms. Extra time and hard work are key words for describing the Music Department. Paul Levi'n, an advanced music student, summed it up when he said, "Our accomplishments are due to a strong effort by dedicated students and teachers who sacrifice a great deal."

RELIGION IS A WAY OF LIVING "Faith, with growth and a deep meaning of life", is what the Religious Studies Department strives to teach Notre Dame students. Father Frank, Chairperson of the department, feels that, •'Without this outline to follow, we are shirking our responsibility as a Catholic school". He goes on to say that, "We must provide our students with a sUbstantial foundation on which they can build after they graduate". Unlike some other schools which only offer one semester of religious studies, Notre Dame provides a full year of varied religion courses. By developing such a curriculum the Religion Department is, in effect, fulfilling the needs of every individual student. The freshman course covers three areas: understanding human needs, faith development, and the Old Testament. Sophomores study Jesus Christ as a Person, Encounters With Man, and The Sacraments. Juniors can choose from numerous courses that deal with the meaning of life or they can join the

seniors in the study of Sexual Response and Religion and Marriage. "Religion is a way of living", states Father Frank, and by educating the whole person, students can decide for themselves the place that faith will have in their lives. Father explains that many students doubt the reality or the depth of their belief. He insists, however, that, "This is completely natural because an individual usually does not determine until later in life whether or not religion is going to be one of his priorities". The department's responsibility and goal, then, is to get students ready psychologically so that as they mature, they can make that decision about faith. On the whole, Notre Dame's Religious Studies Department is complete with varied courses and instructors who are committed to making religion not just a class but a way of life.

CATCH THE FIGHTING IRISH "FEVER!" Friday, September 22, 1978, was a day the whole school will remember. The annual Blue and White Day turned out to be an event when every student showed his spirit and support at a super pep rally. On that day, two "coneheads," better known as Carolyn Arnister and Toni Ailey, roamed the corridors and even attended classes. Some mysterious "Toga Party" members dressed in white sheets, and many other costumes decorated the halls of a spirit-filled Notre Dame High School. Were you there when senior lunch members started the chant "Kill Trenton High"? Did you blow your whistle at the pep rally until you deafened your fellow classmates? Maybe you were a freshman who screamed your loudest hoping to outdo the roar of the rowdy seniors. Whoever you are, you probable did open your mouth to shout something, only to close it a second later with a mouthful of colorful (but not tasty) confetti. If you weren't on the bleachers stampi_~g your
feet or clapping your hands to the music of Notre Dame's small but powerful band, you might have been one of the excited athletes that the school was honoring. The teams marched in, proud and straight, and promised their loyal fans a season of victory. There were teachers there too. Mr. Kelly performed as a cute cheerleader. That great quarterback, Mrs. Gavin, and her fellow female faculty football players slaughtered their male opponents. Then, as the gym seemed to rock with emotion, spirited students spontaneously charged on to the center of the floor shouting, "We are Number One!" At the pep rally the cheerleaders led all the classes in.the chant of "We got pride on our side!" Even though it may not be grammatically correct, on Friday, September 22, Notre Dame students ~mphatically revealed that spirit and pride indeed were on- their side.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES WORK The World Book Encyclopedia defines student government as, "an activity in which students take part in the administration of their school." At Notre Dame, however, the people involved in this organization have assumed varied additional responsibilities. Over the years perhaps the primary function of those associated with student government has evolved into one of planning and directing assorted school activities. These duties are necessary and practical ones and as a result, the officers now spend the majority of their time serving as a type of "ways and means" committee for their respective classes. They perform very productive tasks but these obligations sometimes sidestep their original responsibility as the voice of the student body. At Notre Dame, Student Government is divided into class officers and a Coordinating Committee
54
which is made up of two representatives from each level. Class officers consist mainly of those who want to share their ideas for the improvement of their class. The Coordinating Committee is composed of individuals who are interested in the policy and regulations of Notre Dame. These students work more closely with the administration and faculty. Their ideas and opinions are easily heard although sometimes overridden. "StUdent Government has come a long way", says Father Hughes. "Sister Charlotte does a fine job as moderator and a close working relationship with the administration and faculty has developed under her direction. Student Government is helpful in bringing things to our school that we would not have otherwise. The Notre Dame members strive everyday to restore the original intent as a government of, by, and most of all for the people of our school.

PUBLICATIONS EXPRESS STUDENT IDEAS Notre Dame is one of the few schools in Mercer County in which the Business and Foreign Language Departments have something in common. In both of these departments a specialized newspaper is published by the students who take courses in these two disciplines. The Business Department's quarterly periodical is known as "The Busi-Business Bulletin" . It evolved in 1971 because of a need to make the rest of the school aware of the many accomplishments of the students and teachers in this active department. "The Four Winds" is the name of the Language Department's publication . This semi-annual newspaper originated eleven years ago for two purposes. Primarily, it was designed to provide a showcase for the linguistic and artistic talents of the foreign language students. Secondly, it was meant to serve as a teaching tool for the faculty and as a learning guide for the students. Mrs. Gribbin of the Business Department and
68
Mrs. Palenchar of the Language Department both consider their newspapers to be total student productions. The students who worked on the "BusiBusiness Bulletin" this year spent many hours after school editing, typing, and producing the paper. "The Four Winds" staff, under the direction of editor Paul Lane, made all of the choices and decisions concerning the layout and literary style of their newspaper. Both publications used articles submitted by students, especially encouraging work from non-staffers because they wanted everyone to contribute and to have a chance to get involved. Each year as these two literary publications hit the press, they show that specialized newspapers are an important cultural part of our school environment. Anyone who has ever read "The Four Winds" or "The Busi.-Business Bulletin " can verify that they both provide a very unique experience for the entire Notre Dame community.

YEARBOOK CLASS PROVIDES INNOVATIVE For the first time in the history of Notre Dame High School there was a course built into the curriculum called Yearbook Planning and Production. The instructors were Sister Patricia Rooney and Miss Terry Giampetro and the principal aim of the new class was to allot five credits to twenty-five students as an incentive for them to create a good yearbook. For the seniors and juniors who took the course, it was an educational training experience. Students were taught how to do page layouts, crop photographs, write feature stories, conduct interviews, present assemblies, and organize accounting books for Canticle buyers. There was something for everyone's interest, whether they liked business, journalism, or art. When asked why she became involved in the Canticle course, Miss Giampetro replied jokingly, "It must have been a brief moment of insanity". On a more serious note, -however, she said that the
72
motivation behind the class was to shift the major responsibility of producing the yearbook from the moderators to the students. When questioned about her reasons for becoming a participant in this new endeavor, Sister Pat indicated that, "Producing a yearbook is a very complicated matter and the original purpose of the class was simply to facilitate what can only be termed as a mammoth task." The students who took Yearbook Planning and Production also attested to the fact that putting the yearbook together was much more difficult than they ever imagined and the consensus seemed to be that, "This was no easy course." The idea behind the Yearbook Planning and Production class was the development of a better product. Since the proof is indeed in the pudding, whether or not this concept was successful will be determined by the eight hundred students and teachers who purchased copies of Canticle 1979.

EXPERIENCE BRINGS SUCCESS TO HOCKEY "The reason for our successful season is experience," says Mrs. Barbara Major, field hockey's varsity coach. "All of the seniors have been playing together since their freshman year, and the juniors have been playing together for at least one year. The girls have had so much exposure to field hockey because of their friends and relatives having played, that they function on the field like veterans." . Notre Dame's varsity field hockey team finished with an 11-7-2 record, the best in its history. Included in their wins was a Colonial Valley Conference game against Princeton High. No other Notre Dame team has ever been able to beat Princeton in field hockey. Among the other accomplishments of this year's team we~e the greatest number of victories and shutouts in a season, and a win in the first game of a state tourna ment. Achievements of individual members of the team
88
were made by Kate Hutchison, who scored twenty goals during the s.eason, and Norma Tursi , who scored a record five goals in one game . A special honor was given to Bibber Dovgala when she was chosen as one of the top five goalies in the state of New Jersey. . "Our girls really took their game seriously. They were a close team too, and that really helps," claims Mrs. Major. "We had no lows or depressions during the season, and if there was a problem , our two captains, Bibber Dovgala and Lori Streit, were able to handle it." Coach Major was really pleased with the season on the whole and feels that it was better than she had expected because the girls were spirited and hungry for wins from beginning to end. "I look for hard working girls, a lot of dedication , and people who never give up" , says Mrs. Major, "and that's what our team consisted of this year "

INDIVIDUAL MATMEN EXCEL Wrestlers are not born; they are dedicated athletes who have set certain goals for themselves. Our wrestlers, hidden away in their own room, pound the mat for endless hours. Along with strength, matmen need to develop stamina, speed, experience, desire, courage, and intelligence. Training, practicing, conditioning, and mentally preparing, make a wrestler what he is. Notre Dame's grapplers have not yet achieved recognition as a team, but individuals have reached outstanding goals this season. In spite of having only three seniors, this year's team finished with a winning record. Senior Jim Maurer set a new N.D. record for the greatest number of pins in a varsity season (12), and a new Mercer County re-
cord for the fastest pin (ten seconds). He and Aldo Gonzalez (18-2) have qualified for the All Mercer County team. In addition, two underclassmen, Pat Vagnozzi, a junior, and Jim Catelli, a sophomore, were selected to the All Mercer team. Jim also has the distinction of being the first sophomore in the wrestling history of Notre Dame to place second in the Districts. In all, the Irish placed five men in the semi-finals of the Districts, more than any other school in Mercer County. On the whole, the 1978-79 wrestling season was one in which individual grapplers excelled. As Jim Maurer explains, "Wrestling is a team sport made up of athletes with a special goal in mind: Districts, Regionals, the States.

JUNIORS SHOW N.D. THE WAY TO GO The Juniors started their school year on September 7 with the theme, "The mighty class of 8 and will show N.D. the way to go". Through all of their activities and participation, they did just that. Many fun events were sponsored by the junior class which helped to make the year more enjoyable. On September 30, they held a penny carnival during which they sold baked goods to N.D. football fans. A car wash brought about fifty juniors out into the rain to wash cars but mostly they had just plain fun. On October 13, representatives from homerooms came to demonstrate their athletic prowess at volleyball but participants from 11 J and 11 H emerged the true champions. Another successful social event which proved to be both fun and profitable was a dance on November 17, with a New York disc jockey. Perhaps the most memorable event of all, however, was Ring Day which, although postponed because of a problem with the ring company, was finally held in January. Junior involvement in the fundraisers was quite obvious during the 1978-79 school year. In spite of

being the smallest class at Notre Dame, they held their own in competition with the seniors. For example, participation in the Magazine and Ad drives was exceptionally good as they came in behind the seniors by only a slim margin. Among the many students who helped to make the year successful were a handful of elected representatives who saw to it that their class was recognized throughout the school. Lauren Koch and Martha Paixao were members of the Coordinating Committee and they insured the juniors a voice in the student government. Under the direction of their moderator, Miss Shipley, the class officers Kathy Latham, Donna Inverso, and Joe Sirak worked hard to organize activities and encourage participation and spirit. On the whole, juniors, the members of the "Class of 8 and 0," set a great example for the school by promoting numerous activities that were not only financially beneficial but were most of all, fun and enjoyable for all.

SILLY SOPHOMORES ENJOY SECOND YEAR The sophomore class started the year on September 6, 1978 with an orientation unique from all other class orientations. While reflecting on the previous year's events, class officer Maeve Cannon reminded everyone of Joe Federico's pie-eating expertise by pushing a pie in his face. Obviously, the Class of '81 has a great sense of humor, and this was again proven to the whole school during "Sophomore Weird Week", November 27 to December 1. Each day they wore something ridiculous silly socks, goofy T-shirts, wacky hats, and crazy costumes. They ended the celebration on Friday with homeroom competitions called "Almost Anything Goes". Homeroom 100 proved to be the champs, but everyone had a great time. That same Friday night the class sponsored a disco dance that was a huge success. Besides having fun, the sophomores proved that, when the situation warranted it, they could get down to some serious business. In the magazine drive, the Class 6f '81 worked hard with 10F
leading all other sophomore homerooms in sales. Unfortunately, however, when they competed against the freshmen, they came out second-best forcing their class moderator, Miss Jill Durling, to acknowledge at an assembly that, "The Frosh are the best"! Other events, both work and fun, were sponsored by the Class of '81. A dance marathon, a volleyball night, a car wash, and a class picnic were some of the more popular ones. Class officers Lisa Andrews, Joanne Carella, and Kathy Ragany coordinated all of these activities under the direction ')f an enthusiastic Miss Durling. Maeve Cannon and 5ue Shelly, members of the Coordinating Committee, represented the sophomores on the student government. With two years behind them, the sophomores are discovering that a sense of humor is essential in organizing, planning and participating in the many activities associated with their class.

MAGAZINE DRIVE STARTS FROSH ON THE This year's Freshman Class had every right to proudly tell everyone that, "We are Number 1." They started the year off with a winning Student Government combination which consisted of Theresa Chmara, Jackie Bresica, and Kevin Nicholson and moderators Mrs. Fagan and Mr. Romano. With the help of those officers and their moderators, the frosh were able to give one of the few successful class dances, with their own disc jockey, Ralph Iorio. The freshmen had several class projects. The first was a car wash which proved to be very successful financially. The second was a Christmas party for the patients at Morris Hall. The students passed out cookies and punch and sang Christmas carols. With John Colasurdo as Santa Claus, they really brightened up many of the resident's holiday. The class fundraiser was the selling of magazines and the freshmen sold more than any other class in school. They also successfully challenged the sophomores as to which class would sell more. The frosh won by more than $4,700. As a result, the sophomore class moderator, Miss Durling, got up

on stage and told the entire freshman class that they were the best class at Notre Dame. The frosh also had some outstanding athletes as well as athletic teams. Dave Cook made varsity appearances at the last two football games of the season and Jeff Celetano and Cliff Flowers were both members of the junior varsity basketball team. This year's frosh soccer team had a record of 13-2-3 and the girls' basketball had a 7 game winning streak during their season. Among the many jokes that the freshmen have shared this year, some of the more prominent ones include Walt Mciver's mouth. Mr. Romano's magnificent singing, Mrs. Fagan's Irish wit, and John Cifelli's appetite, which they feel will always help them win any past, present, and future pieeating contests. Class moderator, Mr. Romano, says that the one message that he and Mrs. Fagan have tried to instill is to, "Keep happy and never give up." From the rest of the school's standpoint everyone would agree that the frosh did just that and made their first high school year just as their class trip, a "Great Adventure."

SENIORS MAKE EVERY MOMENT MEMORABLE The class of nineteen hundred and seventy-nine was a class of triumphant winners, spirited losers, capable doers, successful followers, good friends and kind acquaintances. But most of all, it was composed of a group of young people who were anxious to grow and who wanted to BECOME. The seniors were guided through their four years by some faithful friends in the Student Government. These people helped to generate spirit and encouraged individuals to contribute to the community as well as to Notre Dame. When they were freshmen, they collected magazines for the patients at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. A Christmas party was also given for the children at that hospital. And, for four years straight. they gave generously to the Thanksgiving baskets for the needy. In addition, the class has consistently helped the school by participating in the fundraisers. They sold magazines every fall except for sophomore year when candy was sold. Under the direction of their current Moderator, Mr. Kelly, they worked extra hard and were able to successfully challenge and beat the juniors in fundraising sales. Each year a class dance was sponsored with either a live band or a disc jockey. Some of these dances were held to commemorate special events
142
such as the Blue and White Day Disco, the Halloween dance party and the Senior Christmas Ball. The most celebrated of all affairs, however, were the memory filled junior and senior proms. There were only three class trips for the class of '79 but they were all exciting and long remembered experiences. They visited Great Adventure, had a frosty ski trip to Massachusetts, and lastly, enjoyed a scenic trip to the state of Florida. Many things have been shared by the seniors and they will leave N.D. with all sorts of memories. For instance, who could ever forget freshman hazing, retreats, solid colored sweaters, weekly deten-路 tions, double periods, free cans of Doctor Pepper, tobagganing, the 1978 football season, class moderators, the hypnotist at the junior prom , semiformals, 50's week, the plays and the traumatic experience of taking PSAT and SAT tests? The senior class has set many goals over the past four years, some of which have been reached and others which are still to be realized. In the final analysis, however, it can be said that through time and hard work, the members of the Class of '79 BECAME, just as the caterpillar metamorphoses into the butterfly.

WEATHER CAN'T DAMPEN SENIOR SPIRIT Senior Spirit Week for Notre Dame this year began with a ski trip on the weekend of February 2, to Pittsfield, Massachusettes. It included many winter activities such as tobogganing and iceskating as well as swimming and dancing. Seniors continued to show their spirit during the week of February 5th, with the "Rock-Around-The-Clock" theme of the 50's. Although snowy weather postponed many of the planned activities, seniors were able to participate in such nostalgic contests as hool-a-hooping to musical chairs with boys volunteering their trusty knees as seats. The pie-eating contest may have
146
given some students indigestion, but that wasn't half as bad as the headache received by those who stood on their heads for over two minutes. Stuffed animals accompanied seniors girls to their classes, and during lunch many guys tried their luck at juggling. Friday concluded the festivities with class members dressing up in bobbie socks, poodle-skirts, leather jackets, and saddle shoes. On the whole, 50's week proved to be a mixture of fun and games that created an atmosphere of enjoyment for the seniors at Notre Dame.

CANTICLE ADVISORS EXPRESS THANKS Canticle? What's it all about? What's it really like to work on the y~arbook? Depending on who's responding to that question, any number of answers could be expected. For us, Canticle has meant a lot of different things. There were times when producing the yearbook was rewarding and fun, but there were also times filled with nothing but frustration and despair. If we had to describe in one word what it means to moderate the Canticle, it would be time - time spent making schedules for pictures, checking and re-checking layouts, writing and rewriting articles, typing, proofreading, identifying pictures, doing the Index, - all of these things are more timeconsuming than one could ever begin to imagine. We'd like to thank several people who, for us, have made working on the yearbook time well spent. Our publisher, Mr. Frank Ball, Jr., has always
194
been most kind and considerate. It's a great feeling to know that one phone call to Frank will invariably solve numerous problem$. We're grateful to Sister Judy Ward who assisted us this y~ar by giving her expert advice regarding artwork. We'd also like to thank Don Syres, our photographer, for always being available to cover social and sports events. A very special thanks Is extended to Beth Meagher, last year's editor-in-chief who gave her time when we desperately needed it and helped us to meet our third deadline. What's it like working on the yearbook? It definitely has its rewards but most of all, it demands large quantities of that very precious commodity----TIME. Mi~s
