SIGNS

Signs that burn like shooting stars Pass across the nighttime skies; They reach out in their mystic language For us to read between the lines Some are born wllo would defy them, Others still who would deny them.

ra'

Signs like moments hung suspended Echo just beneath the heart, Speak in voices half remembered, And half remembered, played their part; Signs that come while we lay sleeping, Left behind for our keeping.

Signs that whisper in the dreams

Of sailors an d of river queens,

Of paupers an d of men with means;

It all depen d s on how it reads,

And some are born to never need them,

Others stili . w ho never read them.

It All Depends On How It Reads ...

GRATIAS

TIBI, DANKE, MERCI, GRACIAS: THANK YOU, MRS. PALENCHAR

One teacher with whom every student here at Notre Dame must come in contact during their first two years is Mrs. Mary Palenchar. Mrs. Palenchar has dedicated the past eighteen years of her life to Notre Dame High School. She is fluent in three languages and her teaching of these languages is enhanced by her vast studies and travel experiences abroad. Mrs. Palenchar offers more than just teaching a language because she takes a personal interest in the growth and development of her students. As Father Hughes puts it, "Mary Panenchar has dedicated her life's blood to Notre Dame." Aside from her responsibilities as department chairperson and teacher of German and Latin, she serves on both the Curriculum Committee and the Principal's Advisory Board. She is also chief advisor for all Language Honor Societies. Mrs. Palenchar, as Language Department Chair-

t,

person, has been responsible for many of the linguistic advancements in this school. The Four Winds, the foreign language magazine, which she has moderated for four years, improves greatly with every year it is published. The language festival, which is held every other year, is coordinated by Mrs. Palenchar with the purpose of giving every student the opportunity to become familiar with many different cultures. She not only makes the European trips possible but encourages all language students and teachers to take one of these trips and experience the European lifestyle. There is almost nothing Mrs. Palenchar wouldn't do to help a student advance in his language studies. She is truly, "one of the most valuable people at Notre Dame." We give you our long overdue thanks, Mrs. Palenchar, and we dedicate our 1978 Canticle to you for all of your insight, support, and love.

SISTER ALICE ACCEPTS THE N.D. CHALLENGE Every student knows how hard it is to start in a new school - a school that holds problems and challenges never before faced. For most, it is a nerve-wracking experience. But one newcomer to Notre Dame seems to be handling the pressure quite well. She is Sister Alice Swartz, the school's new Vice-Principal. Coming from Holy Spirit in Absecon, New Jersey where she taught English and Religion, Sister Alice is as new to being a Vice-Principal as she is to Notre Dame. In spite of this, she finds her new routine "different but good." When asked what that new routine was like, she simply laughed and said, "Chaos!" and produced a list of various duties as Vice-Principal. They ranged

from the distribution of keys to publicity for Notre Dame. Her list also included every activity that takes place in school. Even Sister Alice had to admit that it's difficult "trying to keep up with all the activities that exist." She modestly attributed some of her success to the students whom she finds "very friendly and willing to accept and work with people". She also observed that the faculty is "very generous with time and talents." Is is only right to give credit where credit is due and Sister Alice certainly deserves credit for the results she has achieved in what has probably been one of the most hectic times of her life.

MR. VERDEL WEIGHS THE ISSUES One experience that is surely dreaded by every Notre Dame student is that of having to stand on the "wrong" side of the dean of discipline's desk. But the man on the other side of the desk doesn't necessarily think that his side is always the "right" side. Mr. Albert Verdel has served for four consecutive years as Notre Dame's dean of discipline. And when he says it's not always easy, it's the voice of experience you hear. His past positions are impressive enough to put respect into the hearts of the most irreverent. Among them are coach of Bordentown Military's, football team for twenty-one years, a coaching position with the Phillies, (yes, the Phillies!) in 1944, and, what was probably the most challenging part of his career, coaching Notre Dame's football team for seven years. With all of this experience in sports behind him, there are certain parallels Mr. Verdel has found between discipline in sports and that in school. For instance, "Any coach will say that a well-disciplined

team will win more than their share of games. If there's no discipline, there are problems." Mr. Verdel feels that the hardest part of his job is making decisions that have to do with dealing out punishment. Suspension and expulsion cases are particularly difficult because, "It's hard to have a student not fit into the community." But, according to Mr. Verdel, discipline is not all punishment. He believes in constructive discipline, which includes helping in personal matters and guiding the students in the proper direction. In spite of the stigma that is bound to be attached to any discipline office, the job even has its joys. Mr. Verdel feels that by working with students and seeing them mature, he contributes to that growth and, in effect, grows with them. He belives that discipline is a combination of sternness and love. "You have to have both." Thanks to Mr. Verdel's efforts, we've got both at Notre Dame.

AUTUMN

The crisp Autumn breeze gently lifts The leaves in swirling whirlpools Against the cold ground. Like the leaves there Is no time for stopping, For standing still, Letting life pass us by. It is the time to change And change we must, discarding the old As a tree sheds the brittle dead leaves, Memories of what has passed.

ENTHUSIASTIC NEWCOMERS PARTICIPATE At the beginning of the school year it was very easy to distinguish freshmen from other students. It was not at all unusual to see one wandering aimlessly around looking for the swimming pool or furiously pounding a locker that wouldn't open because the combination was forgotten. As the average frosh became used to the daily routine, he began to look a little less like a lost puppy and more like a selfassured member of the school community. The enthusiastic newcomers took pride in their new enviornment and displayed a healthy school spirit. This sense of pride and accomplishment was carried over into every project and activity taken on by the Class of '81 this year. In the annual Magazine Drive, where competition on all levels is always keen, the freshmen placed a close second to the highest class, the sophomores. Never being content with second best, the energetic frosh challenged the top-seeded sophs to a volleyball game. Because of some confusion in the scoring, the first contest was called a draw, but the rematch was won by the sophomores in the last few seconds. Although the

frosh lost, they proved that they could not be easily defeated. Freshmen directed their energies into such activities as the Koinonia Club's "Socials for Special People" and the "Right to Life" March in Washington D.C., where an impressive number of them attended. Their Christmas project turned out to be a big hit with the old and the sick in area nursing homes, who received small gifts from them. They carefully planned out and sponsored their own successful dance which was held on the evening of February 24. A pie-eating contest, whose participants were sponsored by anyone wishing to help the Ad Drive, was held during March. As a grand finale to their year's activities, the freshman edition of "The Gong Show" was presented. The freshman class has proven itself to be a vital part of the Notre Dame community. They have a lot of potential and much to offer the school as they settle down to relax and enjoy their next three years at Notre Dame.

GUIDANCE ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO EXCEL "Guidance gives the students the opportunity to get feedback from caring people." To many, this statement by the director of the department, Sister Carmel, may come as a surprise because they might not realize what Guidance is all about. The Guidance Department is the Ann Landers of Notre Dame. Besides listening to student complaints, the counselors try to resolve scheduling conflicts and assist the student in progressing academically. Guidance contributes a great deal to the development of each class level. To the seniors, career counseling is offered as well as S.A.T. interpretations and college information. For those who choose not to continue their education, vocational counseling, job opportunities, and personal references are provided. Counseling juniors includes evaluation of

P.S.A.T. scores, and encouraging an interest in future professions by having students research particular careers. Sophomores too, get a headstart on their vocations. The O.V.I.S. Ohio Vocational Interest Survey, gives students an idea of the job field for which they are best suited. This test enables them to decide what courses to take for the upcoming year. The freshmen basically receive orientation to the school itself and information regarding the courses available to them. Guidance attempts to impress upon all students the importance of good study habits. The door to Guidance is always open to those who are willing to seek help. With their understanding nature, the Guidance counselors at Notre Dame can be stepping stones to the development of a very successful future.

IRISH ROOKIES As the average Notre Dame student glanced over this year 's fall sport schedule, he undoubtedly noted that the school 's female population has attained athletic equality in the form of the first official Notre Dame Girls' Soccer Team . Forced to contend with a league of veteran soccer teams , some of which have been organized for as long as five years , the Irish rookies with an outstanding record of 9 - 3 - 1, aren 't as "green" as might be expected . Their coach, Mrs. Sandy Koschek, is the first to admit that, " The girls do possess a lot of talent ." The team itself may be new but the individual players are certainly no strangers to the sport. One team member admitted that she has had an interest in soccer since the fifth grade and has played in the Lawrence Hammett Soccer League. The girls' success lies in their disciplined daily routine . A typical practice starts at 2:30 when they run a mile and exercise. They then perform various drills designed to improve the necessary skills and a scrimmage against the Freshman Boys ' Soccer Team is not unusual. After running a lap around the field, the co-captains face-off and the team does its exercises. The discipline

KICK OFF FIRST SEASON displayed by the girls during practice extends into their games as well. They also look to Providence for a little help when they play. More fittingly perhaps than praying the Our Father, the girls say a Hail Mary before taking the field. If by the end of the first half, enthusiasm hasn't proven to be enough, they say another Hail Mary. In "celebration" of a victory, the team must run only the required two laps around the field. When they lose, however, the "agony of defeat" becomes a reality since they must run an additional lap for every point their opponents scored over them. As encouraging as the team's future may look from the spectators' point of view, Mrs. Koschek feels' that there are goals yet to be achieved, such as team unity. The girls possess a great deal of skill and are ready and determined to fight to win, but the occasionallack of team unity means that 17 very talented players will have trouble '.'making it click for every game" . One must admit that a girls' soccer team is a valuable addition to the assortment of athletic teams here at Notre Dame. As Sandy Koschek herself puts it, "It's interesting, it's - different" .

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS STRIDE AHEAD As cars scurry to get home, racing through the parking lot, there is a team of racers who track ten miles a day on foot. These are the people of Cross Country, the forgotten ones who strive for individual excellence with no one to help them but themselves. They run through heat waves, thunderstorms, snow and the cold of winter. These unique people are gifted because in this sport, maintaining a positive attitude is just as important as physical conditioning. The program at Notre Dame has been improving over the past three years largely because of the dedication of such members as Kevin Dziura, Chris Hanak, Chris Cantwell and Gene Lanzoni. As Kevin puts it, "Running is the oldest known existing sport." He believes that the key to successful running is self-discipline. "You must keep running when the season is completed so you can constantly improve yourself: more durability, better stride, etc ... " For Kevin, this kind of discipline worked, having made First Team Colonial Valley Conference, and leading the young N.D. team to a respectable 8-

40

10 season. The coach, Mr. Ken Connell, agrees totally with the self-discipline type of approach. "You can't teach a kid to run; they, in a sense, coach themselves. I can't run for them; I only help with the mental part of it." Cross Country is a relatively male-dominated sport. However, N.D. has turned out some fine female competitors, the most recent being Bee McCleod. She took second in the annual Mercer County girls' competition, having been ousted from first by a tenth of a second. Bee is joined by four other girls on the team who have proven themselves to be dedicated competent runners. Cross Country is not by any stretch of the imagination an easy or glamorous sport. It requires a great deal of hard work and stamina. The Notre Dame Cross Country team may at times feel "forgotten" but upon examining their daily routine, it becomes evident that glory is indeed secondary to inner pride and a sense of individual accomplishment.

IRISH MARCHING BAND As Stephanie O'Connell, the marching band's drum majorette says, "It's not the quantity but the quality that counts." The Irish marching band may not be the largest, but it includes some of the most talented students of Notre Dame. This year Notre Dame's band has taken on a new image. Under the direction of Mr. Joseph Biancosino, a larger and more refined squad is being built. He devotes much of his time trying to prove that a small band can be a good one. Band members practice after school almost every day of the week and , thanks to Eric Kichenman and Dan Brown, the drill team and rifle line are now ready for competition. Football games just wouldn't be the same without the band and their halftime shows. The instrumental section lends much spirit with their version of the school song and their musical cheer "Let's go,

46

Irish. " Like all Irish clans the band is a close-knit group. They do many things together such as ice skating and playing squamish and football. Their headquarters is the band room which is uniquely decorated with posters of Alfred E. Newman, the Pink Panther, and Funky Winkerbean . The band members are aware that they are often criticized, but they feel that those not in the band do not know what fun they are missing. As one of the members puts it, "It's quite an experience!" Mr. Biancosino is trying to develop a complete and productive instrumental music department by starting grade school students with private music lessons. He feels that this is only the beginning. In a few years he hopes that the band will be bigger and better than ever.

WINTER

Quiet and solemn is the snow: Each flake as individual as you and '1, Destined to fall and occupy its own place on the earth. Growth Is impaired but beauty remains, Hidden under a .thick blanket of white; The season Is cold~ but a certain warmth permeates the soul. A solitary tree stands in the snow Reminding us of the life that once was And the life that Is yet to come.

JUNIORS SET NEW TRENDS BY ASSUMING The Junior class has finally passed the half-way point in their high school years and gained the status of upperclassmen. Perhaps the most exciting aspects of being a junior are receiving a class ring and planning the prom. The class of '79 has set some interesting precedents this year, one of which deals with Junior Ring Day. For the first time in Notre Dame's history, school rings were given out individually. This gave a special touch to the day, which ended with a dance in the cafeteria. To make the freshmen feel more a part of things, the Junior class welcomed them with "freshman power" buttons. Also, aware of the fact that "Saturday Night Fever" is spreading with evergrowing popularity, the Junior class sponsored a first-ever disco dance, complete with its very own disc jockey and the latest disco sounds. In other extra-curricular activities around the school, the juniors were very much in evidence. The

majority of the varsity cheerleaders 'c ame from this energetic class, including co-captains Michele Kelly and Jennifer Peoples, positions traditionally held by seniors. The main leads of Camelot - Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere were portrayed by juniors Barry Mulligan, John Mazzoli, and Mary Jane Walton. The climax of this year was, of course, the Junior Prom which was done in their "Own Special Way" After months of planning and raising money, this one beautiful evening made it all worth the effort. The prom committee even managed to sign up "Trilogy", a very popular rock group in the area. The Class of '79 was not lacking in involvement this year. They have produced many outstandng people and activities to contribute to the growth of Notre Dame.

SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES PROVE REWARDING "Catholic Schools - Different Where It Counts." Perhaps what makes the difference at Notre Dame is the increasing emphasis on spiritual activities. Liturgies, retreats, service projects, the Genesis II Course - all of these have been prepared with the purpose of bringing students, teachers, and parents together in a Christian Community. There are many in-school activities in addition to the regular religion classes which help to build a Christian attitude. For example, Mass is celebrated daily by the school chaplain, Father Walter Nolan. He has even made it possible for First Friday Masses to be celebrated during school time in the auditorium so that more students are able to attend. Some faculty members have been mandated to serve as Eucharistic ministers during these Masses. In addition, faculty and students carefully plan out-ofschool events. ~etreats, Christmas caroling, the distribu-

tion of Thanksgiving baskets - all are organized by Notre Dame's Religion staff. A function of the Koinonia Club is to make trips to various places, such as Skillman and Morris Hall Home for the Aged to share some time with tho路se less fortunate. Perhaps the most popular projects sponsored by the club are the periodic socials for Special people. Sister Catherine Darcy along with Father Nolan provide the impetus to make these activities a success. Miss Bonnie Valentino's liturgical group has been formed to bring music to the Mass. On Thursday nights from 7:00 to 9:00, a group of parents and teachers become more aware of themselves and others through the Genesis II program, under the direction of Father Nolan. And to make sure that students and parents are aware of these happenings, a newspaper entitled "Fishy Fax" is sent out with the monthly newsletter. All of these combined prove Notre Dame to be one community that strives to live up to the word "Christian".

A.V. STUDENTS PREPARE FOR CAREERS IN "We do more than people think we do," says one A.V. student. What this department does do is provide all necessary audio visual equipment used in classes and all other school functions. In addition, A.V. personnel work hard to keep these machines in good repair. This is a big job which requires a great deal of time and organization. Mr. John Grussler, the chairman of the A.V. department and chief coordinator of "work-to-bedone," is a newcomer to his job. However, he has brought to his position a wealth of knowledge and experience. In September, Mr. Grussler's main objectives were the finding, repairing, and reorganizing of all the school's equipment. While accomplishing these things, he is also responsible for teaching several classes relating to media. These classes provide a variety of experiences with the purpose of enabling students to become more familiar with the communications industry. Those who take Media Production I are taught how to use all A.V. equipment and are introduced to some photographic principles as well as techniques

88

of effective stage lighting and sound . Media Production II, III, IV give students a more in-depth look at the audio visual world . As proficiency increases, ad,vanced students in these courses have the opportunity to become assistant instructors. Projects are a big part of the course work. They consist of either a fifteen minute sound or a ten minute light presentation or a TV display. Perhaps the most important project for the A.V. department is the vital role it assumes in the school play. Media students have full responsibility for the technical aspects of the production . Mr. Loatman, the director of the play, readily admitted that without the audio crew, the cast of Camelot could not function. It can certainly be said that the job taken on by the A.V. department is no easy task, but Mr. Grussler and his assistants do their best to provide teachers and students alike with capable and efficient audio visual service.

WINTER RUNNERS BREAK TAPE OF FIRST SEASON If the attitude of Mr. Tony Genovesi, head coach of the Notre Dame Track Team, could be expressed in one word, it would have to be "enthusiastic". Fresh out of the starting gate, winter track arrived wi ttl the school's cooridors substituting as its training field. The members began practicing outside, but this season's plentiful snow storms drove them to higher and drier ground. Mr. Genovesi was pleased with the number of interested students who joined his team. Realizing the problems of running indoors, Mr. Genovesi said, "It's very difficult indeed when one usually runs four laps to a mile 0/1 an outdoor track, and now must run ten laps to cover the same distance." The Lawren-

ceville Lavino Field House served as home facilities for the winter track team. When asked what he thought of the new team , top middle-distance man Darryl Defeo replied, " I'm glad that they started winter track here . It gave me a chance to get in shape for spring track. They compliment each other nicely." Sprinter Daryl Ansley added, "Now I'll have a jump on a lot of opponents when the spring season begins." Mr. Genovesi has a lot of high hopes for this new team. He wants to get more students interested in this endurance sport. By building a large, determined membership, Mr. Genovesi hopes that track will soon be a recognized sport at Notre Dame.

CAFETERIA STAFF SUPPLIES STUDENTS On a scale of one to ten, lunch period probably ranks near the top for most students. The cafeteria not only provides students with much needed nourishment, but it also gives them a chance to cram for that English test or do the math homework they should have done the night before. The Superintendent of Food Services, Mr. John Hemphill, has courageously assumed the responsibility of feeding 850 students who buy their lunch daily. The cafeteria staff works very hard to provide Notre Dame with the best lunch possible. They feel most people but good lunches, but may not have enough time to eat them. Mr. Hemphill, who has run the cafeteria for the past seven years, says, "The three student favorites - pizza, steak sandwiches, and fish and fries, only cost about a dollar each, and that includes the ever-popular orange

104

drink." He also noted that for the calorie conscious, the "main dish" seems to be a diet platter which must be ordered before homeroom. The cafeteria staff works from 7:30 a.m. until well after the last senior has passed through the lunch lines. Mrs. Grochala and Mrs. Arnister are mainly responsible for serving the food while Mrs. Stankowski and Mrs. Larkin can be seen working the cash registers. The vending machines are kept well stocked by Mrs. Halzbaur and pretzels are sold by Mrs. Potocki. In addition, two senior boys, Ed Fagan and Joe Kliwinski, have worked in the cafeteria for two years cleaning up and washing dishes. The cafeteria crew is always willing to accept any suggestions that will improve upon the lunch program. We are all grateful to these hardworking people who help to make lunch a favorite of students and teachers alike.

SENIOR WEEK On Friday, January 27, Notre Dame saw quite a different dress code in effect. It was not at all uncommon to see the hippies and the yippies, girls straight off the set of "The Monkees", flower children, and even the Ku Klux Klan wandering among the usual blue uniforms. These were the seniors of the Seventies trying to relive the revolutionary Sixties. The real question that was passed along the silent majority during Senior Week was, "Were the Sixties REALLY like this? " After all, did any average normal person attempt to blow a bubble with four pieces of bubble yum in his mouth? Gene lanzoni managed it and received for his magnificent effort - bubble gum, of course. Linda Dirk just went "bananas" over her victory in the paddle ball contest. After 333 jumps on the pogo stick, contest winner Danny Belli is probably still seeing the world's ups and downs. Skate boarding, it seems, was not all that easy in the cafeteria since every entry took at least one spill. There were two veter ns, however, who managed to glide into first place - Ed Gillin and Kim Hamersky. So, Seniors, now that you've devoured your giant birthday cake and enjoyed mimicking those who lived in the Sixties, just pray that the class of '88 doesn't decide to imitate the Seventies.

The last leaves have blown away as a silent shroud of snow blankets the trees in a world of shimmering white. You, the Capricorns, Aquarians, and Pisceans warm this icy season with your compassion. The Piscean inspires her sister signs with faith and understanding. The independent Aquarian offers curiosity and a sense of adventure. The wisdom and success of the Capricorn is a result of the order that she brings to the events of everyday life. Though winter seems to hamper growth, each of you brings a refreshing change and spiritedness to your season.

SPRING

Breaking through the once barren earth, Fearful of what may be found, Shimmering with vibrance and anticipation, The awakening of a flower in the dawn of Spring. Shedding winter's burdensome cloak, To be free and to run with the wind, Again filled with overwhelming happiness. Unfolding as beautiful as a daisy, To stand up straight and reach for the sky, Basking in the golden sun's glory, A chance to be b()rn again.

"SILLY" SOPHOMORES DEVELOP MATURITY, It should be brought to everyone's attention that Notre Dame High School has under its roof a remarkable group of individuals sometimes referred to as the Class of 1980. What makes them so remarkable? Even the most casual observer would be able to find a great number of sophomores participating in every aspect of high school life: sports, music, art, scholastics. There are many sophomores that excel in these areas. But even as a whole, they add to the Notre Dame community and NOT just by providing nearly three hundred tuitions per year. Sophomore school spirit has been evident in all the projects undertaken this year. There was Mercy Day, on which the class presented each of the sisters with a corsage. There were the controversial

Frosh vs. Sophs volleyball games, in which the So phs were ultimately victorious. In the Ad Drive , there was enough participation to warrant the planning of a class trip - an important step forward from the lack of interest shown in fund raising as fresh'men. More important, perhaps, than any of these, is the maturity that has developed within the class of 1980. They are no longer newcomers who don't quite know what to do. They are full-fledged members of Notre Dame who conduct themselves with ease and self-assurance. Of course, neither are they old-timers, with loads of high school experience behind them. They are sophomores - learning, growing, and improving with each passing day.

COME RAIN OR SHINE, IT'S BUSINESS As one walks down B corridor he usually hears the busy clacking of typewriter keys. This is the home of Notre Dame's Business Department, where chicken scratch turns into real words and typewriter keys come alive. Many people are unaware that the Business Department offers more than just Steno and Typing. For example, the Distributive Education and Cooperative Education Programs, headed by Mrs. Alice Goldstein, give students on-the-job training and a chance to gain work experience while still attending school. In a variety of classes students can learn such things as the meaning of caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) and how to "keep the books".

The Business Department even has its own newspaper. The Busi-Business Bulletin, as it is called, is published three times a year. It is a combination of the news of the department and information pertaining to the outside business world. Chairperson Mrs. Margaret Gribbin thinks that every student at Notre Dame should take at least two business courses before graduating. She feels that, "this makes a student well rounded and is a great aid to all, especially those going to college." The Business Department has greatly expanded its scope over the years. The many courses that are offered are not only informative and interesting but they are practical choices for all students regardless of their future plans.

PARENTS' CLUB SUPPORTS ATHLETIC One of the most important reasons for the success of the athletic program at Notre Dame is the Parents' Club. This hard working group provides the financial and moral support necessary for the continuing success of sports in the school. Their moderator is Reverend Walter Nolan who was given this job at the same time he became Notre Dame's school chaplain. Although he is thankful for the generous people who donate their time and money to the club, he stressed that, "We need more support - much more!" Mr. Vince Ardery, the school's athletic director is responsible for scheduling all sports activities and displays his constant support by his presence at athletic events. The

president of the club is Mr. Leonard Dileo, who also does the announcing at N.D.'s home football games. In addition, the members lend their help by selling . refreshments at the games and sponsoring a " 300 Club" raffle and benefit games such as donkey basketball and Yankee All Stars. Besides these athletic events the club runs two flea markets a year and a car raffle, all of which are designed to raise money. The athletic department would not have reached the level of success it has today without the dedication and devotion of the ND Parents' Club. Thanks to their efforts Notre Dame has an athletic department of which we all can be proud.

MAINTENANCE LEAVES N.D. SPARKLING To those students who remain in the school after the parking lot clears and the noises die down, it is not at all unusual to hear, "Where are you, Martha?" resounding through the deserted corridors. A quick walk around the even quieter upper halls reveals brooms propped against the wall, carts filled with all the latest cleaning products, and little piles of dirt waiting to be swept up and thrown away. These people who make the place come alive after the school day ends are the dedicated and hardworking men and women of the maintenance staff. Many people take it for granted that the school will be neat and clean as they begin each new day. The janitorial staff keeps the school together in maintaining the actual physical appearance and working order of the building. Mr. Howard Palmer is the Superintendent of Maintenance. He works in the school from very early in the morning until late in the afternoon regulating the heat, fixing broken pipes, and solving innu-

merable "crises" that arise during the day. Anyone who attempts to sneak into the school before 7:50 A.M. immediately becomes aquainted with another maintenance man, Joe Tomulson. Joe can usually be seen working on the grounds outside or making needed repairs. The majority of women on the staff begin their workday at 3:00 P.M. and do not finish until after dark. Since most students have already gone home by this time, many of these fine ladies go unrecognized. Only those students who stay after school see these women as they go about their daily routine of sweeping up cigarette butts, paper shreads, and empty wrappers. They are so quiet they can startle the person working after school who believes a room to be empty and turns around to find someone mopping the floor behind him. The maintenance people take pride in their job and with good reason. They work long and hard to make Notre Dame a little nicer and a lot cleaner.

CANTICLE REMEMBERS WHAT YOU FORGOT In addition to the many teams and clubs which remain after school periodically , there is a group of students who meet everyday and yet go virtually unrecognized . These are the dedicated editors and staff members of the Canticle "team". They do not receive varsity letters, but in June they receive a greater reward for all their hard work - a finished yearbook. As Sister Pat says , " Not every high school student can claim that he has published a book. That's something that will last forever." Each day the veteran advisors, Sister Pat Rooney and Miss Terry Giampetro, work with the members offering advice and lending their support. They go over the material many times with each editor in an attempt to achieve perfection. To quote Miss Giampetro, " It's impossible to understad the enormous amount of time and effort that is spent putting the yearbook together unless you've actually worked on the staff and experienced a deadline." The layout editors, Marie Fitzpatrick and Todd Adams, can be seen nearly every day arranging pictures and trying to create interesting page designs. Since many of the other staffs are dependent upon them, they strive to finish their work as soon as possible. Although the literary side of the yearbook is very demanding, its editors, Cel Kraus and Laurie Komlosi, still take time out to have fun. They absolutely "love " to identify pictures a few days before the deadline by questioning every student they can find on the corridors. Linda Dirk, the typing editor, enjoys her work but also finds it very challenging. Since her job falls directly before the deadline, she sometimes spends ten consecutive hours at the typewriter . A dreaded experience by the majority of students is to be

caught unaware by the photography editor, AI Kwientniak. AI has been known to sneak up on people and snap a picture before they realize what has happened. The sports editor, Joan MacDonald, collected all the scores and sports information needed to do layouts and write ups. Although her job deals mainly with sports , both literary editors agree that they would not be able to accomplish what they do without her assistance and support. Some students run when they see the business editors, Chris Hanak and Jennifer Halasz coming, for it usually means that they want money. They are invaluable members of the team because without them, there would be approximately 800 unsold yearbooks stacked in the Canticle Room . Guiding and assisting each staff are the co-editors-in-chief, Denise Coyle and Beth Meagher. Although it wasn 't planned that waY,it seems as if each has joined a staff "in a sense" , since Beth contributes much to layout and Denise is one of the best headline writers. The Canticle Room is not always quiet and productive . There are times when it seems impossible to concentrate, with the cheerleaders practicing almost directly outside the door. On the other hand, Canticle regulars find it difficult to ignore the sounds which emerge from the nearby band room . The advisors and editors work very closely with one another, "if you know what I'm saying". Although working on Canticle entails a lot of time and energy, it is fun . The students get to know and like each other and , as Beth Meagher puts it, " I wouldn 't trade it for anything in the world! "

SENIORS REFLECT ON PAST FOUR YEARS Back in grammar school it seemed liked 1978 would never arrive, but it's finally here. Looks like we made it, seniors! For some of us, it feels like the end of the line, but for most, it's like hovering on the threshold of a new road to travel, a new mountain to climb. We don't, however, have to walk away emptyhanded. The memories we've created over the past four years will live on forever. Remember how different we all looked in freshman year? Everyone was trying to be an individualist and didn't quite know how to go about it. Then there was sophomore year with the whole school trying to get used to that crazy double period rotating schedule. We even had our own celebrity when Chris Hanak went to Colorado to represent all of Trenton in the National Science Fair. We had a lot of school spirit that year too, and proved it when the "Class of '78" won the float contest during the Homecoming parade. Remember how proud we all felt as we turned each other's rings on Junior Ring Day? We were the "different" ones last year during the fund raising drive w~en we sold knick-knacks instead of magazines. We planned out and shared our own Junior Prom which was a real

188

"hypnotic" experience. But the memories we'll carry the longest are the ones made this year - our last year together. Perhaps we'll recall that "freaky" Halloween party which sported everything from coneheads to happy hookers. And who could forget the day Anne Vrancik, Homecoming Queen 1978, reigned over the massacre of Saint Anthony's? Then there was "flower power" and bubble gum that raged through Senior Week and the revolutionary Sixties. The Florida trip was not as sunny as we expected, but everyone managed to come back sporting a tan anyway. Finally came the moment we worked towards for thirteen long years - the last day of high school. We COUldn't seem to decide which it should be, tears or cheers. The Senior Prom made it all worthwhile. For many it will always be a "Night of Golden Memories". Graduation came and went with lightning speed - and then it was all over. Gone are the 'old high school days. Things will never be quite the same, but we must remember that there's a whole world out there just waiting for us to show what the members of the "Class of '78" can do.

The bikinis are back on the beach and school has become a memory of the past. The three signs of summer: Cancer, Leo, and Virgo radiate with sincerity. You Leos contribute to the summer fun with your warmth, generosity, and leadership. The sensitivity, patience, and Intuition of the Cancers make for good companionship. But don't feel left out, Virgos. Through your perfection, practicality, and thoroughness, you can make your own footprints In the sand. Edward Gillin

THANK YOU

The 1978 Canticle has been the basis of friendships, hardships, happiness, sadness, understanding, and most of all, work, for everyone involved. It has been a learning experience from which all have benefited. We would like to thank the following people: Mr. Frank Ball, Jr., our optimistic publisher, who always encouraged us at deadline times; Mr. Don Syers, our dependable photographer, and his able assistant, Anthony Liberatori, for their exce~lent pictures; Saberina Mouran, for her poetic contributions to our divider pages; and Fr. Terence MacAlinden, for aiding in the organization of our editorial staff. We would also like to express our appreciation to our editors: Marie and Todd, for their skillfulness in layout designing; Laurie and Cel, for their literary creativity; Linda, for her patience and typing proficiency; AI, for his photographic coverage; Joan, for her accurate scorekeeping of all sports events and availability to other staffs; and, last but not least, our accountants, Chris and Jennifer, for their keen control over finances. We are especially grateful to Sister Pat and Miss Giampetro, for their support, guidance, and friendship. We hope the readers enjoy the 1978 Canticle as much as we have enjoyed putting it together!
