Kairos IV
The word KAIROS means "God ' s time." In October, almost 30 seniors took time off from school and sports to spend time with God , their classmates, and themselves. Led by six members of the senior class, Mr. Breen, Ms. Ivins, Fr. Mike, and Mrs. Scheetz, these seniors worked to build and strengthen the many
66
relationships in their lives. It was a great experience for everyone who participated, and the beautiful setting at Camp Nuemann was the perfect touch. This fourth Kairos retreat helped many friendships to grow, and proved that there is always more to a person than what meets the eye.

Liturgy
School liturgy is an important time each month when the school gathers in worship and praise. Father Michael Lang leads each mass, along with the Chaplain's Club and Madrigal Choir, which help make each service special in its own way. At each mass the student body comes together in communion with each other. It's a time of worship, prayer and reflection. Each mass helps our Notre Dame community grow spiritually together. Whether it be the first or the last mass of the year, each student walks out of liturgy with a deeper feeling of unity.
Service A very exciting and rewarding program at Notre Dame is the Community Service Outreach. It is a program ofvolunteerism which impacts every student, in every grade. TheN otre Dame Service Program has a three-fold goal: to provide outreach to the elderly; to provide support and encouragement to our local poor; and to provide educational guidance to children and young adults. A sampling of the volunteering in which students participate include the following: making daily lunches for our local poor living in the Route One shelters (all food items are donated by the students), preparing a weekly dinner for a Haitian family , cooking and serving suppers for the poor at Loaves and Fish-
Maki ng lunches fo r the Rt. 1 Shelters .
72
es Soup Kitchen, delivering weekly bagels and soup to Mount Carmel poor, visiting Rainbow House, Triad House and Anchor House with food and flowers , helping at LIFT in Trenton to restore their pantry, collecting winter coats for New Visions, bringing music and cheer to convalescent centers and Mercer Street Friends Adult Day Care, participating in weekly swimming lessons for children with disabilities, painting school windows at Mercer Day Training Center, making homemade story books and conducting Kids on the Block Puppeteers at neighboring after school programs, holding a Halloween and December parties for Big Brothers/
H elping out at the H alloween Party.
Sisters (over 200 children participate), and having a phenomenal Senior Citizen Prom in our Cafeteria. In essence, extending our Notre Dame family to our community. These are just a sampling of the reaching out by our students through this service program. And the most wonderful aspect of the program is the good feeling each service volunteer receives by participating. The Notre Dame Community Service Outreach provides school-based service experiences that help us become personally aware of society, with all its needs, and the responsibilities that each of us has as a member of it.

Homecoming
October 3, 4, and 5 marked this year's annual Homecoming festivities. The events commenced with the Homecoming Liturgy Friday afternoon, followed in the evening by the Notre Dame football team's victory over the Princeton Tigers. Prior to the game, the senior fall athletes were acknowledged and celebrated. At half time the Homecoming court, escorted by their parents, took the field for the announcement of this year's King, George Abel and Queen, Jessica Rosidivito. Other members of the Homecoming court included, Carly
76
Allen , Nadeen Kabia, Niki Spruill, Megan Clark, Bill Carter, Kevin Hughes, B.J. Costello, and Scot Fanning. The highlight of Saturday evening was the Homecoming Dance where the seniors and juniors celebrated the beginning of a new school year. Sunday morning's annual Irish Run entitled "Wrobo Strikes Back" brought the weekend 's activities to a close. With the support of students, teachers, alumni, parents, and friends , Homecoming 1997 was a huge success.

Powder Puff On November 26th, 1997, the lights were lit on the football field , people filled the stands, and players swarmed onto the field. Each year a very anticipated football game marks the beginning of the Thanksgiving weekend. It is a tradition here at Notre Dame and also a rivalry. It is not a usual football game. Yes, there are football players but the only difference is, they are the girls of Notre Dame. Through the cold, the rain , and all the mud , two teams emerge , the Junior and
Senior girls. The Fighting Irish women took to the field again this year with anticipation and excitement. This year, the Senior defense proved they wouldn 't let up and the Senior offense showed its strength. Merideth Harvie led the offensive attack with 2 touchdowns along with Jess Rosidivito who added another touchdown. The Junior offense also showed it's stuff through Megan Savoy and Lauren Welsh, who both scored a touchdown. However,
the Juniors seemed to be no match for the aggressive Seniors. The Seniors were hungry for a win after a loss last year. With the 20 to 12 win , the Seniors celebrated a much wanted victory. The Juniors, despite the loss, showed team spirit and look towards a win next year. As the players left, the crowds dissipated and the lights were shut off, another game was in the books. However, as the game ended, one thing still remained , the Fighting Irish team spirit.

Junior Ring Night
On Monday December 8, the juniors gathered to celebrate a sense of class pride during Junior Unity Night. In addition, many faculty, family and friends of the Class of '99 joined the participants to witness and take part in this very special event. Father Michael Lang led the ceremony which began with mass and ended with the students receiving their class rings. The evening was enjoyed by all and ultimately the juniors realized that despite their many differences, they share a unique, common bond with God. It is a bond which cannot be broken but, rather, brings them closer together as a class.

Fus Fusion was the best it has ever been this year, with special thanks to Mrs. Debbie Gibilisco. This year was Mrs. G's third year working with the Dance Class and Dance Performance, and she really showed off her talent in choreography. The three Dance Class numbers were excellent, especially Thriller with its special lighting affects and this year's newest addition, the smoke machine. Along with the Dance Class, Dance Performance showed their talent in a variety of group numbers and solos. Some of the favorites were the hula hoop number and Rhythm Nation. This show would not have been as great of a success without all the hard work the dancers, Mrs. G, the stage managers, and the tech crew put in to it. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year's Fusion the best!

National Honor Society Induction The Notre Dame National Honor Society is a prestigious organization that includes about one hundred Notre Dame students. This club is made up of juniors and seniors who have demonstrated the four National Honor Society qualities: scholarship, leadership, service and character. The members have exhibited these qualities in their everyday lives, especially in the Notre Dame community. The club is moderated by Ms. Anderson. The officers: President David Heitzman, Vice-President Erin Humphries, Secretary Emily Ricci and Treasurer Chris Kurpiewski, lead through example. One of the things they are most proud of is the service they provide for Notre Dame. The club has organized several activities to help around school. Most importantly, the group is made up of outstanding individuals who are examples to fellow students and friends. One of the main responsibilities of the members is to be peer tutors. The National Honor Society conducts peer-tutoring sessions every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during Activity Period. At these times, students who are having difficulties in a subject or just need someone to study with, are able to come to A207 and be paired with an NHS member. The benefit of this program is not only that students are helping their peers, but also that students are learning from each other. Peer tutoring is an important program of the NDNHS and one that will only grow and flourish with time. Another big project for the members is working as student guides. Members rotate being Student Guide every couple of

months. On the day members are working, they help out in the Main Office for one period. They run messages to the different classes, answer phones, assist the secretaries and do any other errands needed to be done. An additional part of their service to the school includes acting as helpers for various teachers. This help takes many forms , from filing and moving books to sweeping and setting up bulletin boards. The members use their free time, during Activity Period or after school, to help these teachers. Overall, they are a great asset to the NDHS faculty. This year the NHS induction was a special night for both the inductees and the veteran members. The old members worked very hard to make everything "just right". During the ceremony, the officers gave speeches dealing with scholarship, leadership, character and service. The keynote speaker, Dr. Francis Speara, gave a very inspirational talk, stressing the importance of avoiding what he called his four blunders: scholarship without understanding, service without commitment, leadership without example and character without compassion. In all, it was a wonderful and very important night in the lives of all involved. Ultimately, NHS has become more cohesive and focused on serving the student body this year. Through the hard work of the by-laws committee, NHS has put into effect its commitment to fulfill the four virtues of membership. Through innovative fundraising and member contributions, the club will be presenting a $500 scholarship to an incoming freshman next year. Thus helping to ensure a new class of future NHS members.

Peer Leaders The Peer Leaders were very busy during the ' 97'98 school year. They worked extremely hard towelcome the new freshmen and improve the school en vironment. This year they worked with the Leadership Club to bring together a small miracle with St. Bernard's Mission School in North Dakota. Closer to home, they facilitated confirmation and first communion retreats. In addition, they ran a six-week life discussion series throughout the first two months of school. All the freshmen were involved and the discussion groups were very successful. Some of the topics included cheating, stress and pressure to party. Overall, the freshmen enjoyed the discussions and each student became closer to his/her groupmates and peer mentor. All of the Peer Leaders remain involved in many projects and plans for the upcoming months. They continue working hard to improve these ideas and initiate others for next year.

Amnesty International is an organization that works for the release of "prisoners of conscience" - people imprisoned for their beliefs, sex, religion , or race. These prisoners have not used violence. Amnesty International works for their release through the use of letter-writing campaigns to the governments or organizations that are holding these prisoners of conscience. Amnesty International is a worldwide organization and is not affiliated with any nation .
From September through early May, people passing by B204 on Tuesday afternoons or Wednesday's Activity Period will see a dedicated and talented group of students at work: they are the editors and staff of the Writing Irish , producers ofNotre Dame's award winning Art-Literary magazine Etc. For the past 9 years they have collected , sorted , and evaluated hundreds of pieces of student art and .creative writing and assembled it into a magazine that represents the best creative efforts of our student body. Their outstanding achievements have been recognized by the Columbia School of Journalism's Gold Medalist awards for the last 5 consecutive years. The 1997-98 edition promises more of the same excellence the N.D. community has come to expect from Etc.
Art Club
French Club
The art club is a place to hang around and be with people that enjoy art. Some students need a creative outlet, a place to complete an art project for aiwther class or just somewhere to be with other art buddies. The art club does a lot to make the ND world a more beautiful place. They assist the art teacher with the displays in the foyer and showcase, decorate the stage for plays, mass, decorate the Christmas tree, go on field trips to see masters' works. They contribute to the ETC magazine, assist anyone that needs to add more color to their life at ND!
We are a group of thirty five students who share a love for all things French . We enjoy French theater and the arts . We meet once a month and plan activities. This year our activities included two trips to Broadway shows, several bake sales to defray our expenses, a Toy Drive for the Haitian Community and a Christmas Pizza and Secret Santa Party.

Football A football season, resembling a ride on a rollercoaster. This year's 1997 football season did resemble a rollercoaster with speed, thrills, and up's and down's. Beginning the season with a 0-2 start, the team was held together by captains Brad Cannon, Drew Besler, B.J. Costello, and Jerry Mangine. The offense started off slow, but started rolling by mid-season. Our quarterback, Neal Lynch, stood tall behind his offensive line. This line included seniors Tim Friel, Garrett Olsen, Dave Heitzman, Chad Rovner, Bill Carter and Mike Corboy. With
this line in front of him, Lynch had no problem connecting with receivers Justin Schutt and Brad Cannon on countless occasions. The defensive unit held back offenses with the help of Chris Milinowicz, Besler, Carter, Cannon and Mangine. With the season coming to an end and with only four games remaining, an injured Mike Corboy returned from a hopeless knee injury. To help out the team some players had to play both offense and defense. Losing their first game to Lawrence, and then their second to West Windsor, the Irish had
dug themselves into a great hole. Coming together as a team, they managed to move to a winning record of 4-3 as they shutout Nottingham in the rain and mud 16-0. Unfortunately the Irish finished the season 4-5, losing their last two games to Trenton and Steinert. With all the up's and downs' of this years football season, the fans might have thought they were at Great Adventure. At times the team wanted to give up, but through the entire season they remained a team.

Cross Country The Notre Dame Boys' and Girls' Cross Country team completed another successful season. Coaches Joe McLaughlin and Bill Rowland continued to develop the talent of the Boys' and Girls' Cross Country Teams and coached both teams through productive seasons. The Boys' Cross Country team had an outstanding undefeated season, finishing 11-0. With a combination of young talent and depth, the Boys' team continued to plow through the competition. The Boys' team performed well at the invitationals they attended, finishing first at the Williamstown Invitational, second at the S.D.A. Invitational third at the Stewart Invitational, third at the Shorecoaches Invitational, and second at the Mercer County Championships. The Boys' Cross Country team will be losing the leadership of Senior Ryan O'Connor. Ryan came out senior year as a first time runner and was an important addition to the team. Ryan continued to work hard
and improve while leading the team past the competition. Junior Todd Henderson is also a symbol of hard work and endurance. Todd never stopped pushing himself or the team. Todd finished second at the Mercer County Championships, third at the Catholic Track Conference and third in Parochial A States. Todd is the tenth seed entering the Meet of Champions on Saturday, N ovember 22. The Girls' team also continued to push through the competition even though they were lacking depth. With only five girls, they finished the season at 7-4. The Girls' team had a combination of young talent and experience. Seniors Jessica Rosidivito and Courtney Walsh teamed up to pull the team through the season. Juniors Jain J a Williams and Tukesia Garner were first time Cross Country runners and continued to improve through the season. Jessica Rosidivito finished fifth at the Mercer County Championships.

Girls' Soccer The Notre Dame girls' soccer team, led by captains Lisa Pellegrino, Liz McGlinchy, Sara Fell, Dina Jingoli and Tracy Robinson, completed the season with a record of 15-4. This earned them a Valley Division crown and a second seed in the Central J ersey Group III rankings. They successfully defeated every team in the Valley Division twice, including rival Ewing, who they have not beaten for nearly 10
years. The defense, led by Lisa Pellegrino, Sara Fell and Liz McGlinchy was successful in shutting down the opposition with the help of Elini Ginis and Melissa Muniz. The offense was sparked by goal-leading scorers Brittany Campbell, Dina Jingoli and newcomer J en Pistorius, who was quick to find a home in the ND offense. The midfield, consisting of Tracy Robinson, Katie Larkin, J en Maxwell and Betsy Ruffin
linked the defense to the offense and provided several scoring opportunities. The seniors would like to thank the team for a great season and, most of all, Ms. Koshek, for a great four years. Congratulations to her on her 300th win!

Boys' Soccer The boys' varsity soccer team had a very successful season. They made it to the state tournament for the first time since 1991. In the process they captured the South Jersey State Championship and advanced to the Parochial "A" State Championship, where they lost a tough game to state powerhouse, DelBarton, 1-0.
The Irish made a push for the state championship, led by seniors Scot Fanning, Mike Miloscia, Harry Stout, Geoff Steadman, Ron Lewis, Kevin Hughes, Tony Frascella and Brian Shapson. Coach Perone produced seven All-CVC players in Harry Stout, Geoff Steadman, Scot Fanning, Brian Johnson, Chris Giovanni, Paul Rottkamp and Kevin Wittig.
Although the Irish had a season to remember with their 13-1 record and South Jersey State Championship, they will look to do even better next year with numerous key players remaining and many promising newcomers.

Girls' Tennis The tennis team was hit by a truck called "graduation". All of the "Big Guns" are gone but not forgotten. Into the breach stepped Erin Sager, Laura Alexander, and Lauren Reddy, to plug the singles holes. Filling the doubles gaps were Keri Repetto, Erika Groesbeck, J en Monroe, and Milinda Kowalik. This group of heroines stemmed the tide and proceeded to roll it back,
achieving a 14 and 7 record. They finished with the highest point total ever in the Mercer County Tournament for a third place finish out of sixteen teams. They reached the state tournament and lost a heartbreaker in the semi-final round against Paul VI. Sophomore Lauren Reddy achieved what no other Notre Dame tennis player, boy or girl, has ever achieved. She finished with a perfect 24-0 mark along with the
County championship. Coach Schafer feels , "This team continued the tradition of Irish Tennis with a never say die attitude. These girls played the game hard and always remembered to smile. After all, Irish eyes are smilin'."

Field Hockey The 1997 Field Hockey Team entered the season with high expectations. Maybe it was the fact that we had ten seniors and five underclassmen returning with varsity experience. Or perhaps it was because our team had executed stellar play at the Rider field hockey camp prior to our preseason. Either way, we all had dreams of recapturing the CVC Valley Division Championship, which had eluded our team for the past three years, and possibly advancing well into the state tournament. Unfortunately, our record did not allow for the attainment of these goals, but it also did not reflect our camaraderie and hard work, and the fun we had together. The team was led by Barb Major in her 29th year of coaching. The offense included senior captain Nicole Sochalski and seniors Erin Coley, Carolynn Czepiga, Katie Mahoney, and Barbara Navata; juniors Lauren Domenico and Dana Zawacki; sophomores Stefanie Doyle
and Betsy Eleuteri; and freshmen Kim Marvel and Allison Natale. The midfield consisted of senior captains Meghan Belz and Rocklyn Kostic along with juniors Megan Savoy and Caitlyn O'Connor, and Sophomore Sarah Righter. On defense were seniors Sue Bolster and Danielle Marrone, joined by juniors Katie Federico and Lasair O'Callaghan. Tending goal were keepers Adra Palma, senior, and J a dan Norris, sophomore. Despite the number of seniors on the team, everyone saw varsity playing time which could prove to be a valuable resource in the years to come. Special recognition goes to Stefanie Doyle, a sophomore and the team's high scorer with goals. There was also much experimentation regarding positions and formation. All season, our team struggled in search of that winning formula, the combination that would prevail victorious. Although we seemed to "click" at camp,
we struggled through each game. Our team slogan, "Whatever it takes ... " may seem ironic given our record. However, I know I speak for the entire team when I say that there were games (West WindsorPlainsboro) when we managed to break . the shackles of defeat in order to prove something to our opponent, our coach, our teammates, and ourselves. Many valuable lessons were learned this season. We learned how to connect as teammates outside of our social circles. We learned that, after losing eight starting seniors to graduation, it can be difficult to "gel" as an entirely new team. Most importantly, we learned that sometimes, ' records do not reflect the ability of a team. Although we were not able to synchronize our talents and our skills in order to become the explosive force we had the potential to be, we can all "look forward to looking back" on this memorable season.

The Varsity Boys Basketball team had an exciting and hardworking season. With determination and great skills, the team led a fascinating show for its fans. Their Coach, Tony Mormile stressed that the team work
together. Senior Captains Rob Riley and Eamonn Haley helped out with team leadership. The team showed a great display of unity, winning three out of their four games in the Christmas tournament in Wildwood. Other major contributors to the team were

Winter Track The girls' Winter Track team has every reason to be proud this year. Proving their greatness, the girls won the Mercer County Championships and nearly came away with a state title with Kathleen McCabe winning the 55 meter hurdles and Deirdre Mullen grasping the high jump competition. The girls' shuttle hurdle relay team of Kathleen McCabe, Erica DiStefano, Jain-Ja Williams and Deirdre Mullen crushed the record and set a new mark of 31.93. The same team took a first at the Princeton Relay Invitational. Qualifiers for the Meet of Champions were Kathleen McCabe and Erica DiStefano, in the 55 meter hurdles, Jain-Ja Williams in the 55 meter dash, and Deirdre Mullen and Erica DiStefano in the high jump. This dynamic girls' team was a formidable presence in the state this year and
maintained an intense work ethic, making the Notre Dame community very proud. As for the boys' team, they too experienced success, remaining one of New Jersey's powerhouse teams for the 1997-98 school year. Though they finished a disappointing second in the county to Trenton High, the boys quickly rebounded for a thrilling victory in the state meet. The Irish were propelled to the team title by superstar Todd Matthews who finished out his spectacular winter track career with a very impressive season. He won the 55 meter hurdles in the County, State, and Eastern Regional meets, as well as the Meet of Champions. He also took home the gold in the 55 meter dash at both county and state meets. This past winter track season saw a resurgence in the distance team as well. Todd Henderson, Ed Moran and Brendan Gurry were
dominant forces in the mile and the two-mile. Henderson and Moran placed first and second in the county two mile, respectively. They quickly followed that up with a 2nd place for Henderson and a 1Oth for Moran at the Meet of Champions. The Irish got much needed points from Brian Koch and Scot Fanning in the half mile and Matt Tuohy, Todd White and Andy Laverty put up big numbers in the sprinting events. Also playing key roles were John Adams and Steve Kindred in the shotput and Jason Cliver in high jumping. All in all, it was a magnificent season for the entire team.

Swimming Despite the fact that Notre Dame doesn't have a pool, the boys' and girls' swim teams worked through grueling night practices at Rider University and continued to dominate the CVC this season. With lots of key seniors last year came the addition of an extremely talented freshmen squad, including Bobby DeSandre, Mike Choquette, Dan Straszynski, Dan Seeth, J en Sink, Mollie Niewsand , Michelle Erwin, Katie Byrne, Jessica Ranson and Dara Bogus. The significant additions to the sophomores were Garrett Groesbeck, Tim West, Debbie Plytynski, Dan Troy, Matt Collins and Dan Pietrzak. Juniors Andrea Nath, Bryan Fredericks, Christine Williams, Susan Brogan, Jen Abitabilo, Dave Bothem and Katie Federico added a tremendous amount of depth
to the strength of the team. These underclassmen were the core of many successes, lessons learned from failures and laughter that senior captains Peter Palfalvi, Allison Brogan, Shannon Welsh, J oanie Goldman, Emily Ricci , and Katie Bonanno and senior Dara Pearson will remember for years to come. February 5th marked the beginning of three days of contestment between Mercer County's top competitors. With the inspiring blue and white hair of head coach Henry DeSandre, the boys' and girls' teams both captured the 2nd place title. Senior captain Peter Palfalvi and freshman Michelle Erwin both finished first at the wall in the 1OOm breast, earning indvidual county titles. The team
watched in awe as junior Christine Williams not only shattered the county record in the 200m freestyle , but crushed her own national record (NISCA). The 200 free relay of Andrea N ath, Shannon Welsh, Katie Bonanno and Christine Williams, and the 400 free relay of Andrea N ath, Katie Byrne, Katie Bonnanno and Christine Williams both took home county titles as well. The team looks forward to continued success next year. The underclassmen will now step up and lead the team in competition, just as the Class of 1998 has led them.

Wrestling This year's wrestling team, coached by Gary Dambro and Jim Catelli, had a successful season despite inexperience and injuries. The team started the season with a victory over South Hunterdon. They continued wrestling hard with wins against Hopewell, Trenton, and McCorristin. Then Mike Tierney, Tim Friel, and Brian Slovensky suffered injuries that left them unable to finish the season. The Irish wrestlers then pulled together to win matches against Hightstown and Ewing, which helped them make
states. They then lost a controversial and well fought match against St. John Vianney. The team finished sixth in the Mercer County Tournament due to the efforts of several medal winners. Chad Rovner had a first , and Gerry Mangine a third. Lou Leva, Ray Noonan, and Mike Tierney had fourths. Ben Vereen and Bill Lazorik each had fifths, and Brian Shapson received a sixth place. Seniors Chad Rovner, Gerry Mangine, andBrian Shapson led the team with determination and team spirit on and off the mat. Rov-
ner had 14 pins, tying the school record. Juniors Bill Lazorik and Lou Leva contributed notably to the teams' successes and hope to lead the team to an even better season next year. Underclassmen Ben Vereen, Mike Tiereny, Adam Priori, Ray Noonan, Jason Ryan, and E.J. Nemeth each made significant contributions and will be back next year to wrestle even better.

Ice Hockey With the retirement of record setting coach Joe Henry, the Irish started this season fresh, under new head coach Mark Kmiec. The Irish opened up with the decisive first victory over the Steinert Spartans. They did it the Fighting Irish way, defeating them 6-1. From there the team took off and never looked back.
The Irish had a mix of experience and young talent. Seniors Jeff Campbell, Josh Page and Ray Tuthill led a talented group of underclassmen to an undefeated eve overall record of 18-4-2, defeating opponents with a combined score of 135-60. The Irish also played very strong semifinal round battles in both the Lawrence
Christmas Tournament and MCT. On a personal note, the team captain Jeff Campbell recorded his 100th career point this year. Overall, the team had a very successful season and was very proud of its accomplishments.

Mr. Simone John Simone was a 1971 graduate of Notre Dame High School. Mr. Simone furthered his academic and athletic career at then, Trenton State College, earning four varsity baseball letters and earning a master of education degree. Upon graduation, he returned to Notre Dame and coached and worked in various capacities for 23 years, as the girls' varsity basketball coach for twelve. He compiled over 250 wins and upon assuming the boys' basketball position, he recorded over 100 more wins. During that period he was named "Area Coach of the Year" on eight occasions. From 1975 to 1992, he served as Vince Ardery's baseball assistant during the five state championship seasons and numerous CVC titles. In 1993, he served as head baseball coach and the team earned a record of 25-4 capturing CVC and South Jersey Parochial A title. During the season the team was ranked # 1 in the state and 9th nationally by "USA Today." Mr. Simone became ND's fourth athletic director in July of 1993 and oversaw the daily operation of 38 sports teams and over 600 student athletes. In August of 1997, he returneq to the dugout as head baseball coach. During the summer he served as a camp speaker, clinician and consultant to Little League and local youth programs. Over 40 of his former players have competed at the college level and nine former assistants have earned varsity coaching positions. Before the 1998 school year began, Mr. Simone stepped down as the school's athletic director, to assume a new position at Mercer County Community College, as athletic director. Leaving Notre Dame, Mr. Simon left the school with more than 300 wins, eve titles and state championships. He was an integral part of Notre Dame's community. He is highly missed but his contribution can be seen in the ever-growing athletic department at Notre Dame. He was an excellent coach, mentor and friend to many. We here at Notre Dame wish him the best of health and happiness in the future. 218

The Next Horizon by Eric Anselmo The sun was setting down over the dunes, streaking trails of purple and orange between the crashing waves. Amongst this serenity I saw the distant figure of a man stretching at the waterline, his silhouette a thin black sliver against the seafoam. Out of curiosity I approached him, for this beach had always been vacant except for me, and the possible company was quite welcome. I called out "Hi there. Beautiful out here, isn't it?" He looked up, smiled, and then said "Sure is ... it's a beautiful day for a run ," and then proceeded with his routine. I asked plainly, slightly confused, "Is there anything in particular that you're running from , Mister?" He stood up at this, eyes aglow , and took a deep breath of the salt air. When he was fully at peace, he said to me, shaking his head "No, I'm not running from anything, just running toward something more. Do you see that far dune on the horizon , Son?" pointing to a distant bluff where sun met sand. "Do you know what lies beyond it, just past your view?" Befuddled by his question , I admitted "No," and then looked upon him longingly for the answer. "'Cause I sure don't, but I aim to find out," he continued , "See, I believe that there is always more than what is laid before us in this game of life, that if you don't go and explore the wonders of living, you will never have lived at all. Now why would you run this race if you didn' t intend to win it? There are so many new adventures beyond this dune, and beyond the next, and beyond her kin as well; how could I just sit here and be content with what is before me now, when there is so very much more to live for? I will run toward these miracles of life, and embrace them all." I stood gazing into the shimmering haze to which he had just pointed, imagining the possibilities of which he had spoken. He was so right, life was not a race against time and the past at all, but one toward the hopes and dreams of a new life, a better life, which was just over the horizon. The tide brought me back to reality, and I turned to thank this man for his profound wisdom. Only his footprints remained , set fresh in the wet sand. My eyes followed them 'til on top of the dune I saw a waving blur against the setting sun, gesturing me to follow. I ran as fast as I could, his deep tracks my map, racing toward where he had stood. I raced toward the golden sun, just as he had taught me. When I reached the dune's crest, he had vanished, leaving only a new trail of footprints toward the next horizon. He had won this race, and had moved onto the next. The next day when I came down to the beach I was surprised to see that the stranger's footprints were still intact. They had not washed away with the tide at all, but rather had survived to guide us all to the next great beyond. As the days passed, I saw many runners following this trail of footprints , blazing their own courses in his likeness. I can imagine him waving them on too, just as he did me, guiding them to the next horizon, leaving his map of footprints as his legacy. Thanks for the footprints, Joe, they show us all the way toward the next horizon. In Loving Memory of Joseph Wroblewski

After teaching English at Notre Dame for almost 20 years, Mrs. Jane Confoy has retired. Her dedicaiton to the students was reflected in all who knew her as a teacher. She helped all her students understand and enjoy the aspects of literature and always made time for those who sought her help. Mrs. Confoy contributed positively to the Notre Dame community and has touched everyone in her special way. She will certainly be missed although she will never be forgotten!
Peter Matwijcow has worked with Notre Dame for many years, as coordinator of the WOW program. During that time, he has touched our lives in several ways. He has helped Notre Dame raise money to make our school a better place. This year, though, was his last as he has retired from the WOW program. However, he continues to help out at Notre Dame. He is presently serv- • ing as the moderator for the Sailing Club which was started this year. We hope that he will continue to be involved at Notre Dame and will grow with us as a community. We especially thank him for his great work. WOW, Mr. Matwijcow, what a great man!

Thanks a Million Advisor Mrs. Siegling Senior Editor Carolynn Czepiga Assistant Editor Dana Matson
It took dedication, hard work and long hours of the 1998 Canticle staff to produce this wonderful yearbook. Each person, whether it was taking pictures, drawing layouts, or typing copies, did their best to make this a marvelous book. Behind all the pages, were many people who helped make this all possible. Besides the 1998 Canticle staff, much thanks goes out to Ms. Ivins, Ms. Riley for all the pictures, the office staff, Mrs. Shultz for use of the computer room, Frank Ball for all his help, and to the rookie on the yearbook staff, Mrs. Siegling, our yearbook advisor. Without the patience and understanding of Mrs. Siegling this yearbook wouldn't be possible. I would also like to recognize those who deserve much thanks on the Canticle staff especially, Dana Matson, Kristin Carty, Claire Faherty, Jen Borys, Michele Maruca, Kim Haney, Jean Shea, Lauren Paluzzi, Jackie Stewart, Sue Brogan & Heather Gudice. Last but not least, I would like to thank someone who does not deserve to go unrecognized , a hardworking person and a great friend , Meghan Belz. Meghan, your help with the yearbook these past four years deserves much thanks and appreciation. In my heart you will always be an editor. Again, I thank everyone for all their hard work and dedication. 1998 Canticle Staff-You did a Fantastic Job!!!

The Next Horizon by Eric Anselmo
The sun was setting down over the dunes, streaking trails of purple and orange between the crashing waves. Amongst this serenity I saw the distant figure of a man stretching at the waterline, his silhouette a thin black sliver against the seafoam. Out of curiosity I approached him, for this beach had always been vacant except for me, and the possible company was quite welcome. I called out "Hi there. Beautiful out here, isn't it?" He looked up, smiled, and then said "Sure is ... it's a beautiful day for a run," and then proceeded with his routine. I asked plainly, slightly confused, "Is there anything in particular that you're running from, Mister?" He stood up at this, eyes aglow, and took a deep breath of the salt air. When he was fully at peace, he said to me, shaking his head "No, I'm not running from anything, just running toward something more. Do you see that far dune on the horizon, Son?" pointing to a distant bluff where sun met sand. "Do you know what lies beyond it, just past your view?" Befuddled by his question, I admitted "No," and then looked upon him longingly for the answer. 路 "'Cause I sure don't, but I aim to find out," he continued, "See, I believe that there is always more than what is laid before us in this game of life, that if you don't go and explore the wonders of living, you will never have lived at all. Now why would you run this race if you didn't intend to win it? There are so many new adventures beyond this dune, and beyond the next, and beyond her kin as well; how could I just sit here and be content with what is before me now, when there is so very much more to live for? I will run toward these miracles of life, and embrace them all." I stood gazing into the shimmering haze to which he had just pointed, imagining the possibilities of which he had spoken. He was so right, life was not a race against time and the past at all, but one toward the hopes and dreams of a new life, a better life, which was just over the horizon. The tide brought me back to reality, and I turned to thank this man for his profound wisdom. Only his footprints remained, set fresh in the wet sand. My eyes followed them 'til on top of the dune I saw a waving blur against the setting sun, gesturing me to follow. I ran as fast as I could, his deep tracks my map, racing toward where he had stood. I raced toward the golden sun, just as he had taught me. When I reached the dune's crest, he had vanished, leaving only a new trail of footprints toward -the next horizon. He had won this race, and had moved onto the next. The next day when I came down to the beach I was surprised to see that the stranger's footprints were still intact. They had not washed away with the tide at all, but rather had survived to guide us all to the next great beyond. As the days passed, I saw many runners following this trail of footprints, blazing their own courses in his likeness. I can imagine him waving them on too, just as he did me, guiding them to the next horizon, leaving his map of footprints as his legacy. Thanks for the footprints, Joe, they show us all the way toward the next horizon. In Loving Memory of Joseph Wroblewski 1962-1998
