Our Time To Shine BY JEANNETTE BILELLO We~ the students~ make up the colors of Notre Dame. We each come shining through in our own special way. We all have our own individual colors. Some are bold, while others are. soft. Yet, somehow they all come shining through to make up a rainbow that shines as a single presence. This single presence is the spirit ofNotre Dame High School. You can feel this spirit as you walk down the hallways. It's having someone smile at you in the hallway. Its playing a game and hearing the crowd cheer for you. It's knoWing that there is always someone there. It takes both the rain and the sun to make a rainbow. Never give up. Even in your darkest times there will be a light shining through. You are never alone~ Jove will be there to light the way. It is in your darkest times in which the rainbow shines its brightest. Softly, as the colors of the rainbow, our Jives are touched by love . . . . Class of 1997, as we graduate and go offinto the world always remember the love you felt, the friends you made, and the Jives you touched, here at Notre Dame. It's Our Time to Shine, so let your light shine bright, and never let it fade. Always remember, where ever you go, what ever you do, there will always be someone there for you. You will see their light out of the darkness and you will find them at the end of the rainbow.

Every year the staff of The Canticle spends much time selecting one special individual to whom they will dedicate the Notre Dame yearbook. The choice this year was simple. With help from the senior class, we have selected a person who is a source of values and inspiration. Therefore, the 1996-1997 Canticle staff is proud to present this dedication to Mr. Joe Wroblewski. For the past 11 years, Mr. Wroblewski has walked down the halls of Notre Dame with his boundless energy. His enthusiasm was contagious to all the students and faculty tliat he has passed, and that will continue as years go on. He has given total commitment to all his activities and inspired all of us to strive for our personal best in athletics and academics. To many of us Mr. Wroblewski is a hero. He displays courage, strength, leadership, but most of all, a will to live. Based on his past experiences, he is someone you can say knows the value of life, and what it means to live it to its fullest. Mr. "Wrobo" shows the true value of everything one would want in a father, a brother, but most important, what one would want in a true friend. And that's exactly what he is, a friend. He is always there when one has a problem, no matter how big or small it might be. He is always there to listen and wipe away a tear. He has so much to share; to some he is "the wind beneath their wings". He made our lives at Notre Dame something truly memorable that we will take with us long after we graduate. . .,. To him we are all his children and part of what he calls his "extended family." Mr. "Wrobo" has "heart" that allows him to be the best that he is capable, he is the prime example of the saying, "it's not the size of the man in the fight, but the size of the fight in the man." A Time For Reflection It is a tradition here at Notre Dame for the seniors to have the opportunity to go on a Senior Retreat. The senior retreat gives seniors a chance to kick back and take a break. The first retreat offered this year was the Kairos II retreat. About 40 seniors went to Camp Neuman for three nights and four days. On retreat the seniors learned about themselves, their relationship with God, and their relationships with others. The retreat is filled with relaxation, time to reflect, and a chance to bond with your classmates. The senior retreat gives you a chance to get to know yourself and others a lot better.

Liturgy It is a tradition at Notre Dame to have a monthly liturgy. Liturgy is one of the few occasions in which the entire school gathers as one. The entire school assembles in the auditorium, which is transformed into a house of worship. Our Mass is led by Father Scott and assisted by the Chaplain's Club. The Madrigal Choir adds a beautiful melody that puts the finishing touches on the liturgy. The monthly liturgy gives students a chance to pray together in body and spirit.
Homecoming
Homecoming this year was yet again, a big success. The Notre Dame football team came up big with a big win against the Ewing Blue Devils for Friday night's football game. The Homecoming court included Dave Augustin, Jade Bryan, Mike Maxwell, Megan McBride, Matt Neiswand, Lisa Norton, Seth Prophett, Guilia Penge, Gerry VanSlooten, and Andrea Sass. Dave Augustin and Lisa Norton were crowned king and queen at halftime. In addition to the football game, students and alumni had a great time while they danced the night away at our homecoming dance. The 1996 Homecoming Festivities were a lot of fun for everyone.

Powder Puff 1996 November 27 marked the eighth annual Notre Dame girls Powder Puff football game. The Senior girls wearing pink and the Junior girls wearing blue took the field for this year's much anticipated flag football face-off. As in years past , the night was cold but the rivalry was hot!! Weeks prior to the game , the Senior and Junior girls attended Sunday practices where they were familiarized with positions, and the rules of the game. The senior team was lead by head coach Jerry VanSlooten , while the Junior girls were lead by Garrett Olsen. Each coach was assisted by other Senior and Junior football players. There was also a lot of talk before the game as to who would prevail , the "experienced" Seniors, or the "well-prepared" Juniors. When game time rolled around , both teams were psyched and anxious to play. The Junior defense proved they were a force to be reckoned with and held off the quick and aggressive Senior offense in the first few runs of the game. The Junior offense took an early lead when Jessica Rosidivito ran the ball into the end zone. However, the Senior girls answered back with a touchdown and Monica Staniec came up big with a two-point conversion to put the Seniors ahead 8-6 at half time. During the second half, neither of the evenly matched teams was able to score and the 8-6 tally became the lowest in Powder Puff history. Although the competition was fierce, fun was had by all. The Seniors came away from the game as two-time champions, and the Juniors came away with a hunger for a win next year. Look out sophomores!!

Junior Ring Ceremony On Monday, December 91h the Juniors gathered to celebrate their mass of unity. Father Scott led the ceremony and the Juniors received their class rings. Each ring showed the school seal which represents the unity and growing closer of the class. The rings also contain a symbol, name, or picture which separates our uniqueness. This special night was celebrated with the family, faculty, and friends of the class of '98. This night will always have a place in the minds and the hearts of the Junior Class.

On November 12, 1996 seventy-four juniors and seniors were inducted into the Bishop Ahr Chapter of the Notre Dame High School National Honor Society. Former Notre Dame graduate, Sister Karen Deitrich was the guest speaker for the ceremony. The four National Honor Society officers each spoke about the different areas of the National Honor Society: Leade.t;ship, Character, Service, and Scholarship. All the members of National Honor Society should be very proud of themselves for their great achievements both inside and outside the classroom.

Peer Leaders The Peer Leadership program is now under the guidance and protection of Mrs. Scalcewicz and Miss Smith. Mega Kudos and hats off to them! The Peer Leaders have worked diligently to make the Notre Dame community closer together through their leadership skills and by being positive role models. One of the major focuses of the program is welcoming the incoming freshmen into our family. With working in our individual committees we are able to provide a more family-oriented environment.

Football
The 1996 Notre Dame Varsity Football squad had a strong season with a record of7-3. The seniors on the team are Mike Reilly, Mitch Mylowe, Gerry VanSlooten, Joe Pizzimenti, Seth Prophett, Chris Argenti, Kevin Broccoli, Osama Elmobdy, Jon Noble, Mike Maxwell, Noel Harrison, James Troy, and Mike Lamendola, they will all surely be missed. The football team should be commended on a great season.

Cross Country
The boys' and girls' cross country team was able to achieve yet another successful season. The girls were undefeated in their regular season and were named County Champs with such talented captains as senior Amanda Ewing and junior Jessica Rosidivito. Senior Christie Larsson also helped contribute to the girls' efforts of"running down their dream." Newcomer Emily Citron and Maura Brennan, although injured, proved that the team can really shine when all put their best foot forward. Likewise, the boys' team proved to be up to their high expectations. Although the team was fairly young, they were guided by talented and experienced captains, Matt Miesionczek and Jason Cliver. Todd Henderson made it to the "Meet of Champions" and proved that the spirit of the Irish is unstoppable!

Varsity Girls' Soccer The Norte Dame Girls' Soccer Team had a season to remember. After losing six seniors from last season, senior captains Nora Dillon, Andrea Sass, and Megan McBride, under the leadership of Coach Koschek, helped keep the team together, and led them through a winning season. In the middle of the season they lost Jackie Kopera to a leg injury. Nora Dillon, Andrea Sass, Megan McBride, Brittany Campbell, Jackie Kopera, Sara Fell, and Lisa Pellegrino had received Honors for the season. "We weren't supposed to make the State Championship, but we made it," said Megan McBride. For the State Championships it came down to the last five games. They beat North Brunswick, and Franklin. Hightstown was beaten in a shootout in the State Tournament. They finished the season with the record 13-8. Each player on the team went out on the field and gave it their all. For captains Nora Dillon, Andrea Sass, and Megan McBride it is hard to say good-bye to the season, but the memories will be stored deeply in their hearts.

Boys' Soccer
The Boy's Varsity Soccer Team had experienced a rough season. The team lost eight seniors to last season. The senior captains for the season were Matt Nieswand, Pete Rottkamp, and Shawn Stout, who led their team through a tough but memorable season. "This year was a big improvement from last year," said Matt Nieswand. They did not make the State Championships, but they showed a lot of potential and determination on and off the field. The final record for the season was 6-10-1. The team worked together and their hardest, and also had a lot of fun.

Field Hockey Last year's field hockey team left a lot to be desired. However, returning with nearly all of it's starting line up, this year's 1996 field hockey team came into the season with new hopes, new goals, and higher expectations. As a team, we attended field hockey camp at the College of New Jersey, a week before our actual pre-season began. At camp, we were able to get more into synch as a team, on the field as well as off. Everybody came out of camp a little sore and a little tired but with improved skills and a better sense of team unity. Unfortunately, our team is no stranger to injury. Rosa Perone suffered a concussion and a black eye, and Meghan Belz received yet another set of stitches. Many of us began to wonder if we were ever going to shake the black cloud of injury which had hung over us the previous year. Fortunately, our string of major injuries began and ended at camp. Our season began under the coaching of Barbara Major in her 28th year of coaching. The team was lead by senior captains Anne Heitzman, Meghan Gribbin, and Justine Schramke. Each captain controlled a portion of the field and brought much experience and leadership to the game. Anne held up the backfield on defense, marking players, flying on corners, and using her speed to steal her opponent's ball whenever possible. Meghan led the front line on offense, forcing and executing offensive corners, hassling her defenders, and moving the ball up the field. Justine controlled the game from her center midfield position. Her spectacular stickwork, quick fakes, as well as her passing and driving abilities were an asset to the team. In addition to Meghan, the offense was composed of our high scoring senior Meg Schmitt, Ashling Stevens, Sue McCann, juniors Carolyn Czepiga and Nicole Sochalski, and freshman Stephanie Doyle. Along with Justine, the midfield included juniors Meghan Belz and Rocklyn Kostic, sophomores Megan Savoy, Katie Federico, and Lasair O'Callaghan. Supporting Anne on defense were senior Rosa Perone, and juniors Danielle Marrone and Erin Coley. Last but not least were the goalies, senior Sue Gazi and junior Adra Palma. Many goals were set and reached this season, two of which include compiling a record of .500 or better by the end of the season, and qualifying for states. One of our biggest problems this year was consistency and we found it difficult to play consecutive games with the same levels of intensity and aggression. However, we achieved our goal and completed the season with a record of 8-8-3. We also advanced to the state tournament. In our first state game, we faced Hightstown and lost a disappointing game in overtime. This brought our season to an abrupt end. The season was filled with many memorable moments. We worked hard, we played hard, we laughed, and we even cried when the time came for the season to end. We believed in ourselves, our teammates, and our coach and we made our 1996 field hockey season an unforgettable one.

GIRLS' TENNIS The Girls' Tennis Team experienced yet another successful season this year as they continued to defend their impeccable reputation and prestigious title of South Jersey Parochial A Champions. Long practices, a sincere dedication, and painful sacrifices as well as the leadership of talented seniors Jen Conroy, Olivia Eslami, Lisa Norton, Colleen Prendergast, Lauren Schell, Monica Staniec, and Shireen Timmapuri were among the secrets of the team's success. Although the focus of the team has usually been its singles players, this year an outburst of talent and consistency was marked by the two Varsity Doubles Teams. The combinations of Jen Conroy and Colleen Prendergast at First Doubles as well as Olivia Eslami/Shireen Timmapuri and Erin Sagar/ Keri Repetto at Second Varsity Doubles heightened the level of excitement and competition established by First Singles Lisa Norton, Second Singles Monica Staniec, and Third Singles Lauren Schell. Looking in retrospect, the girls team has truly grown- not only physically but emotionally and spiritually as well. It becomes obvious that when these girls are on the court, they are one unit, a family that takes care of each other. "This close knit relationship is something that has made the team so successful; a team I'm proud to call my very own" says head coach, Greg Schaffer. These girls have done just that- successfully repeated their title of South Jersey Parochial A Champions. But as this group of seniors leave, an entire new group of girls will be introduced into the scene- all of whom will undoubtedly rise to the occasion and make their mark, just as the seniors have made theirs. Who knows what to expect in the future for such a multifaced team- maybe a State Title!?!

Girls Basketball Once again the Girls Basketball Team has looked forward to defending their Parochial State Title. The girls seem to be on the right track, currently holding a record of 11-3. This record includes an undefeated record in the Colonial Valley Conference, where they have not lost to conference rivals since 1992. Ranked # 1 by the Trenton Times and The Trentonian, as well as 8th in the state, the girls are off to yet another outstanding season. Leading the team to its third consecutive title, Senior Captains Danielle Grady, Meghan Schmitt, and Monica Staniec help to provide a strong backbone for the team. The player's outstanding teamwork on and off the court continue to be a major factor for the team's success. Hard work and exceptional commitment help to build the fast-paced offense and tough defense the Girl's Basketball Team possesses. With a month left to play, the girls are looking forward to playing in their first Mercer County Championships in four years. By Erin Humphries

The Irish, after a slow start, have turned the season around and have a record of 13-7. They are playing great team ball and are looking forward to a tough State Tournament match-up against Bishop Ahr. The team is led by Rich Wilson and Noel Harrison. Other seniors on the varsity squad include Bill Wise, Chris Menschner, Mike Cirillo, and Brian Larkin. With a new Head Coach, Mr. Mormile, the team is looking towards a Mercer County Tourney championship.

Winter Track
The Winter track team has yet again, had another terrific season. The Boys' team and the Girls' team both were number one in the CVC. They both also won Counties and States. The Notre Dame Boys' and Girls' Track team has proved to be the best track team around. Swimming
The 1997 Notre Dame Swim Team dove head first into another great season. The girls team, led by captains, Amanda Steinmuller, and Justine Schramke, had a strong season. The record breaking 200 Free relay team of Jen Beese, Shannon Welsh, Katie Bonanno and Christine Williams, was an unstoppable force. Other senior swimmers, Ann Marie King, Kristen Weber and Teresa King, were also a contributing factor. For the boys team, led by captains, Matt Neiswand, Jim Davis and Chris Huneke, it was a rebuilding year. The boys team placed fifth in counties with 114 points. All in all the Irish Swim Team, led by coach DeSandre, showed a winning spirit, which brought them to another Mercer County Championship, and whose dedication carried them to States. We congratulate all the swimmers on such a successful season and wish them continued luck in the future.

Wrestling
The Notre Dame Wrestling team enjoyed a very successful season this year. The youthful Irish finished with six wins and six losses placing them second in the CVC. The Irish also finished third at the Christian Brothers Academy Colt Classic. Under the leadership of senior captains Gerry Van Slooten, Nick Pyle, Sean Halloran, Carl Caribelli and Dave Augustin, the primarily young Irish gained some valuable experience which will help in the years to come. Notable underclass wrestlers included Juniors Mike Corboy and Chad Rovner and Freshman Ben Vereen.

Bryan broke Notre Dame graduate, John Demers record of 257 points to become the all-time leading scorer in the CVC. The Irish are off to a good start in the state tournament with a first round victory. The Irish are excited about their second round match-up with Seton Hall Prep. One thing is for certain, the seniors are going to be surely missed.

Father Scott
Notre Dame was fortunate enough to have Father Scott Shaffer as our school Chaplain for two and a half years. Father Scott left Norte Dame in February to become a Pastor, for his first time, at Holy Innocence Church in Neptune, New Jersey. "Our Lost in certainly their Gain!" While at Notre Dame, Father Scott helped found the Campus Ministry Team and started the senior Kairos retreats. Father Scott reshaped the spirituality of our school. Those of us who got the opportunity to know Father Scott, know that he is a comedian, he loves to crack jokes. He is also a musician. Who can forget the times he played his saxophone at school liturgy. He is a great cook. The man loved his food. Father Scott was a friend. He was always there, whether you needed a shoulder to cry on or a good laugh. Thank you Father Scott, you have touched all of our hearts. We will be forever grateful for all the things you have done for us. You are loved and missed by all of us here at Notre Dame. 240

The yearbook staff worked extremely hard to make the 1997 Canticle the best yearbook ever. The yearbook staff spent numerous HOURS to make every last detail of the yearbook perfect. Putting together this masterpiece is not as easy as it looks!!! The success of the production of the 1997 Canticle would not have been possible without: THE DEDICATED STUDENTS THAT MAKE UP THE YEARBOOK STAFF, MS. O'NEILL, OUR ADVISOR, MRS. WRIGHT, MRS.
