Best Of The Best

Sean O'Neill is ranked #1 in his class of 248. Sean is a member of Math League and is the President of National Honors Society. He is a peer leader and has been involved in school activities all through high school.

Kairos V

Kairos VI for the senior class of 1999 was a time of "retreat", retreat from the stresses of life.

Kairos was a retreatthat allowed the seniors to spend time with God, their peers and adult leaders; Mrs. Reed, Mr. Breen, Ms. Ivins, Ms. Scheetz, and Father Mike. Coming together at Camp Nuemann has created a new friendships to grow and old relationships to flourish. Lessons were learned, experiences were shared, and in the Iight of God truth and reality were realized. " People are not always as they seem."

Liturgy

Being a catholic school, liturgy is a very important part of Notre Dame High School. Every month the school comes together to celebrate their faith and unity. Father Michael Lang, along with the Chaplain's Club and the Madrigal Choir, provide beautiful ceremonies month after month. The student body and faculty genuinely enjoy the upbeat music and interesting homilies, not to mention the divine adornments on the stage. School liturgy is a wonderful time each month where students and faculty join together to enthusiastically profess their faith.

Community Service

Volunteer work is prevalent throughout the Notre Dame community, especially in the Senior Honors Service Class led by Mrs. Martin. The Service Class encompasses 3 main priorities; to provide outreach to the elderly; to give support and encouragement to the poor; and to involve the whole Notre Dame community, which are all seen in the many service projects. The whole student body is asked to become involved and to partake in many activities such as The Big

Brother & Big Sister Halloween & Christmas Party or the weekly 1 00 Iunches to the Route 1 Shelter- coloring cards, bags and making lunches during Activity Period. Service is a requirement at Notre Dame, but is far from a burden. Freshmen are required to fulfill 8 hours of service, 12 hours for Sophomores and Juniors, and 16 hours for Seniors. If some students are unable to come during Activity Period or to other service projects after school, they can support our local poor

by bringing in soup and otherfoods to reach or go beyond their requirement.

The Notre Dame Service Program involves students with hands on work (Habitat for Humanity), supportive, and through clubs - Story Tellers; Red Cross; Rainbow, Anchor and Triad House, all enable the students to become involved with their communities.

Homecoming On the chilly days of October 16, 17, and 18, Notre Dame celebrated homeco min g '98. The weekend was marked off by the liturgy Friday afternoon, and was followed by the football game against the Ewing Blue Devils late that evening. At half-time, the crowd gathered together to support this year's king, Brian Johnson , and queen , Jen Abitabilo.

Th e court also included Liza Tobish , Alliso n Lombardo, Dana Zawacki , Maura Marc heski , Ed Moran, Tim Lamendola, Todd Henderson , Chris Caldarella.

On Saturday evening, the junior and senior classes danced the night away at the homecoming dance. The Notre Dame students, faculty, alumni, family and friends all helped to raise money for a new track in honor of Joe Wroblewski.

The " Walking in Wrobo's Footprints," and the annual " Run for Wrobo, " were both a huge success.

Homecoming '9 8 was an unforgettable weekend for the Notre Dame Community.

Wednesday night, November 25th, 1998, the Senior class once again proved victorious with the triumphant win over the Junior class. The Seniors were led by the relentless attack of the offense, breaking through the Junior defense. Lauren Sunday, Lauren

Welsh, and Dana Zawacki scored for the Seniors, while Tiny Ricks scored touchdowns for the Juniors. Megan Savoy, Senior quarterback, completed the skillfully devised plays with many quick moves and reverses, which turned into senior points.

Carrie Palombi put an end to the game by stopping Tiny Ricks from potentially scoring another touchdown. Though the Junior class gave a decent effort, the Seniors overtook the underclassmen to win 28-20.

National Honor Society Induction The Notre Dame National Honors Society is a prestigious organization that includes about one hundred Notre Dame Students. The club is made up of juniors and seniors who have led by example in the four National Honors Society qualities: leadership, scholarship, service, and character.

Mrs . Anderson moderates the club. The four officers of the Society are President Sean O'Neil , Vice-president Andrea Nath, Treasurer Michael Moss, and Secretary Kimberly Haney . One of the articles of pride of the Society is the service toothers accomplished .

One of the main responsibilities of the members is to be peer tutors. To this end there are peer-tutoring sessions every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during activity period . Any students having difficulty in their subjects may head to 8206 where a NHS member will help them.

This year members have begun to actually go to teachers' rooms to see if there are any students that might be helped . The tutoring program is

developing is therefore developing into quite an enterprise.

Another project and responsibility for members is to work as student guides. This is based upon a rotating schedule that takes a few months to complete. On the day the members are working they will help out in the Main Office for one period, depending on which they are scheduled for the NDNHS members run messages to different classes answer phones, and generally help to keep the main office running smoothly .

An additional part of the NDNHS members' service to the school includes acting as helpers for various teachers. This help takes many forms, from filing and moving books to sweeping and setting up bulletin boards. The members use their free time, during Activity Period or after school, to help these teachers. Overall, they are a great help and asset to the NDHS faculty.

This year the NHS induction was a special

night for all members of the Society. The old members worked hard to make the ceremony run without a hitch. During this ceremony, the officers gave speeches dealing with the four aforementioned qualities of the National Honor Society. Mr. William Burroni gave an inspirational talk in which he praised the NHS service program, citing specific examples from the list of deeds accomplished by the inductees . The induction wi II be remembered for its importance for all that were involved.

The NHS has continued on its course to become more cohesive and a more perfect asset to the school. The NHS has continued be innovative in pursuing its goals. A $500 scholarship will be presented to an incoming freshman by the club next year, aided by new fundraising techniques such as the phone-athan of this year. This will help ensure a new class of future NHS members.

Peer Leaders A Peer Leader is someone of integrity, smarts, and many helping hands. with a great start to the 1998-1998 school year, our Peer Leaders have gone out of their way to make the new freshmen welcome with a l:ilow out orientation day! They have done retreats to make each class become more united and tied themselves to the community with their services. Our facilitators have run Holy Communion retreats for their friends at OLS, made the St. James confirmation retreat possible, and organized a complete "outreach" day. The Outreach Day Program helped to bond other Peer Leader groups around Mercer County. They have sponsored a dance for the freshmen to make them feel more at home. The life discussion series proved to be successful for yet another year.

These groups met once a week and discussed such topics as stress, peer relationships and cheating. The series ended with a Christmas Party and lots of baby items for the "Baby Shower for Jesus". The highlight of our school year is a Cultural Awareness Week. We joined forces with other clubs in the school and made cultural awareness more meaningful for everyone. This year, we created colorful flag paintings around the school to distinguish and celebrate our diversity.

After writing over 450 letters of Congratulations to the incoming freshmen, we sti II had plenty of energileft. Working with the Lead~ ership club made all of the work much easier and more fun. They have written letter of appreciation to the faculty to give their support and thanks. The Peer leaders ran contest involving Hot apple pies and pinata during lunch periods. Our leaders have run dances, put together alternative nights, supported many school functions, including the Harvest moon Auction, and so much more.

We have dedicated people who care so much about their school community. They do service, give up time to help those students in need, and wear their red shirts with pride and much dignity. We call such people: Peer leaders!!

It was a strenuous start, but a good one for NO's newest edition The Drill Team came on strong as the newest team in ND High.

Only because of the hard work of the teammates, did the team made it though all the twist and turns. The captains may not have been well seasoned veterans and the coaches may have not been professional dancers, but these students have seemed to earn and keep the trust of the coaches, administrators

teachers at Notre Dame. A great performance at the Homecoming Game solidified the opening of a new club with amazing talent. In addition, our Drill Team has chosen to entertain at many oft he Notre Dame High School functions, such as Pep Rallies and Spirit Week! A hearty WELCOME to the newest team at Notre Dame. We are looking forward to many great performances!!!

Etc. Magazine: The Writing Irish

The African American Student Union focuses on unity among members and strives for equality throughout our community . We provide a variety of trips and tours to increase our knowledge of heritage.

From September through early May, people passing

by B204 on Tuesday afternoons or Wednesday's Activity Period will see a dedicated and talented group of students at work: they are the editors and staff of the Writing Irish, producers of Notre Dame's award winning Art-Literary magazine Etc. For the past 9 years they have collected, sorted, and evaluated hundreds of pieces of student art and creative writing and assembled it into a magazine that represents the best creative efforts of our stuoent body. Their outstanding achievements have been recognized by the Columoia School of Journalism 's Gold Medalist awards for the last 5 consecutive years. The 199 7-98 edition promises more of the same excellence the N.D. community has come to expect from Etc.

Amnesty Internatio nal Amnesty International is an organization that works for the release of " prisoners of co nscience" - people imprisoned for their beliefs, sex, religion, or race.

These prisoners have not used violence. Amnesty International works for their release through the use of letter-writing campaigns to the governments or organizations that are holding these prisoners of conscience.

Mock Trial A competition sponsored by the ew jersey State Bar Association helps students to better understand the American system of justice . Although the characters' names and details are fictional, the Mock Trial Competition is based on the facts of an actual case. Under the guidance of Mr. Tobias and lawyer-coach Mr. Kevin Main , the students worked together to understand characters' affidavits, to prepare questions for direct and cross examinations, and to further their knowledge of the legal system.

French Club Model Congress- Model U.

Art Club The art club is a place to hang around and be with people that enjoy art. Some stuaents need a creative outlet, a place to comp lete an art project for another class or just somewhere to be with other art buddies.

The art club does a lot to make the D world a more beautiful place . They assist the art teacher with the displays in the foyer and showcase, decorate the stage for plays, mass, decorate the Christmas tree, go on field trips to see masters' works. They contribute to the ETC magazine, assist anyone that needs to add more color to tneir life at D!

We are a group of thirty five students who share a love for all things French. We enjoy French theater and the arts. We meet once a month and plan activities. This year our activities included two trips to Broadway shows, several bake sales to defray our expenses, a Toy Drive for the Haitian Community and a Christmas pizza and Secret Santa Party.

Friends of Rainbow House Members make homemade desserts, bake cookies and prepare seasonal crafts and food baskets for the girls at Rainbow House in Trenton .

Asian-American Club Irish American Club We try to increase student awareness of diversity here at otre Dame. We help with the International Festival at Princeton University. We usually showcase Asian cu lture in our main showcase in the main foyer.

We go to ew York to experience Asian food and see a show. We also sponso r a pot luck dinner with all the student unions at Mrs. Anderson's house .

Campus Ministry

We are a group of students who meet once a month to celebrate our Iri sh heritage. Our goals are to promote accurate and up to date images of Ireland and the Irish people. Our accomplishments so far, are the formation of the tin whistle band, learning basic step-dancing, and cooking Irish food. We have also attended a live performan ce of Riverdance. Our ultimate goal is a trip to Ireland .

Each year in the fall we attend Rutgers University Model U .N . and compete with approximate ly 800 students from the northeast. Students must choose a country and a U .N . committee. They are required to write two brief research papers which are then submitted to the chairperson of the committee at Rutgers .

Model Congress is held at Rutgers in tne spring w ith basically the same committee format and requirements .

Red Cross Club The Red Cross Club works in conjunction with the Red Cross High School Chapter. As members we fi II Disaster/Frienaship Boxes for emergency services, conduct school blood drives and teacn HOME ALO E, FACT safety programs to area elementary schools.

Spanish Club The members of the Spanish Club are involved in cultural activities, such as coo king chimichangas, sopapi lIas, torti ll as con polio y queso and other dishes indigenous to Spanish speaking countries. We also teach them dances, play Spanish music, watch films, and sing songs all in Spanish . Sometimes we make crafts such as maracas which we use in the class room when we sing Spanish songs.

Dedicated students, faculty, staff, and administrators who gather to pray and refl ect on their own spiritual life and who feel called to serve the school community by working to enhance the spiritual life of Notre Dame .

Campus Ministers help with retreats, serve as Eucharistic Ministers, foster positive Christian values, and help to decorate the environment to reflect various Liturgical Season.

The Irish Times is devoted to writing, designing and producing a student newspaper. Th e students meet each week to plan story ideas and photographs. In dividual students contribute news articles, sports articles, features and photos . A small group of students then designs the layout of the paper.

The Chaplain's Club is made up of students who volunteer their time and talent to set up for school I iturgies, maintain the clean I i ness of the chape l, assist at I iturgies as ushers and alter servers, and assist with food colfection at Thanksgiving.

Our members perform a type of puppetry called "Bonraku." Students stand in back of two-foot high puppets and take the message of understanding ano compassion to area youth. Our skits inc lu de: blindness, Down Syndrome and Ce rebral Palsy .

The otre Dame Computer Club is a group of enthusiastic students who both have & desire technical knowledge of computers and how they work. They help D expand computer facilities and resources. The club members offer serv ice to all areas, and provide help & solutions to teachers, staff & students when technical difficulties or computer related problems arise. They acquire programs & games. They share new technological information With each other.

The Latin Honor Society, as well as all of the language Honor Societies, was established to recognize fhe academic excellence of those students studying a foreign language. Specifically, all members must have maintainecf 3 semesters of an A average in the target language, must have an overall B average, and must continue into a third year of language stuoy. All members are required to participate in the Open House, the Language Bake Sale, and the peer-tutoring sessions.

Student Government Here at Notre Dame the Student Government consists of representatives who have been chosen by their peers to work their hardest to create a better schoo l environment. A few things they have worked to accomplish are: Uniform Proposals : an earring for boys, shorts for fall and spring.

Girls' Soccer

Unsure of what the season would hold, the Notre Dame Girls' Soccer team had a very successful year. Despite losing five starters due to graduation, many players stepped up and fi lied the empty positions . A record of 10-9 does not reflect the talent and determination that this year's team personified. They began the season with a thrilling upset victory over Hopewell Valley, and continued to demonstrate their power by beating rivals Highstown, Lawrence, and

Princeton. They also beat higher-seeded Red Bank Regional in the first round of state tournament play.

Katie Larkin , Brittany Campbell, and Melissa Muniz, this year's captains, helped drive the Irish to victory. Midway through the season Brittany suffered a devastating ACL injury that cut her senior year season too short. A medley of players helped to pick up the scoring slack. The defense, led by Eleni Ginis, Gina Bandola, and Betsy _Ruffin ,

were very confident thanks to the outstanding play of first-year goalie, Stephanie Di Biasi. The midfield, led by Katie Larkin, Melissa Muniz, and Kate Hipple, created many scoring opportunities for the Irish offense, consisting of Jen Maxwell and Jackie Reddy .

The seniors would like to thank the team for making their last season memorable and Mrs. Koschek for a wonderful four years.

Boys Soccer

Notre Dame's Boys Soccer, proved to be a force to be reckoned with this season, as they ended the season 13-5-2. This years team overcame many obstacles, as their two starting center mid-fielders (Brian Johnson and Paul Rottkamp), were unable to play due to injuries. The team , did not allow these two losses to stop them from succeed-

i ng; but rather it fueled the Iri sh, as many players stepped up to take their places. Solid defense, lead by Kevin Wittig and George Black, helped the team win several shutouts. Nick Brett and Jeff Coleman provided key goals that lifted the Iri sh over Colonia l Valley Rivals . While, Chris Giovanni and Joe Lazorik controlled the mid-

fie ld, linking the offense and defense. All CVC Players this year included: George Black, Nick Brett, jason Gregory, Chris Giovanni , and Kevin Wittig. The team had a great season this year, and with key players remaining and promisin g newcomers, the Iri sh are looking to be a contender for the Colonial Valley Conference title next year.

Girls Tennis Imagine a roller coaster: it has many ups and downs, but in the end, it was a great thri II. This was very much I ike the Notre Dame's 1998 girl's tennis team. As the seniors from the 1997 team left, a few youngins moved in to complete the varsity team.

Sophomore AI issa Pastor moved up from playing JV last year to steal the first singles position . Fighting to keep her undefeated record from last year came Lauren Reddy at second singles. Liana Tallarico, also a sophomore, strived to play her best at third singles. The first doubles team, Jenn Munro and Jess McKinstry, kicked off with a strong season for the Irish, while the second doubles team of Nicole Huneke and Amy Mach proved to be a strong combination through-

out most of the season.

These Notre Dame ladies, in their bright new uniforms, led by senior captain Jenn Munro and Coach Greg Schafer, started the season with a 5-0 victory over Trenton High.

They continued with the I uck and ski II of fhe Irish to win an unexpected victory over Hopewell Valley. In the annual Mercer County Tournament, the girls were all dressed up to show their team spirit and cheer each other on. Both first and second doubles team, as well as Lauren Reddy, were all seeded second in the tournament.

During the tournament, Lauren Reddy was the only one to make it to the third round, playing a nearly 4 hour, 3 set match , which ended in a harsh loss to West Windsor.

Coach Schafer was excited to be in the New Jersey State Tournament, only to be disappointed in the first round , with a 2-3 loss to Holy Cross. As the season wore on, there were many smiles and tears, wins and disappointments, but in the end , spirit and mental toughness won.

The season ended with a 1 0-8 record. The JV tennis team, made of new freshmen and sophomores, as well as returning juniors and seniors, proved to be strong with a winning record. With bright eyes and determination, the returning varsity team will seek the championship trophy next year, as wel l as a smooth ride of wins.

The 1 998 field hockey season turned out to be one of the best in a while and one that created many memories. After a few rebuilding years, the Fighting Irish recaptured the glory of winning.

Led by Coach Barb Major in her 30th season, the Irish finished 9-5-3. She was assisted by former Irish player Cheryl Chianese.

The offense included seniors Dana Zawacki , Lauren Domenico; juniors Joanna Brennan, Julia Rosidivito; sophomores Ali Natale, Kathleen Fox, and Dana Milovich .

The midfield consisted of senior captain Megan Savoy; junior captain Stefan ie Doyle and juniors Sarah Righter, and Kelly Reap.

On defense was senior captain Katie Federico and seniors Caitlin O'Connor, Alex Klug, and Lasair O'Callaghan; junior Aly Cervellero; and sophomore Mollie N ieswand. Tending goal were junior keepers Jadyn Norris and Jackie Stewart.

The season was high I ighted by hard fought games including wins over previously unbeaten Hamilton and Hightstown. The Irish were strong even in losses, some that went down to the last second. In what was probably the best game of the year, Notre Dame tied the# 1 0 team in the state, Pri neeton Day School. The team also qualified for states this year. In the first game of the state tournament against town rival Lawrence, the Irish were victorious over the Cardinals 2-1. This was a total team effort and the resu It was a great cause for celebration because Notre Dame hadn't beaten Lawrence in four years. Unfortunately, round two was a heartbreaking loss to Middletown South.

The 1998 season also had its down side.

Again, the team was no stranger to injuries.

Stefanie Doyle suffered a broken thumb, as did Dana Milovich, and Sarah Righter and

Megan Savoy played hurt throughout tht season.

The Irish prevailed with focus on team work and a great team spirit. The locke room was decorated before each game an< pasta parties were always great fun. Wt experienced laughter, pain , tears, but mos of all, we worked as a team and never quit.

Post-season honors went to Katie Federi co, Stefanie Doyle, Megan Savoy, Caitlir O'Connor, Dana Zawacki, and Julia Rosidi vito who were recognized by the Centra Jersey Field Hockey Coaches Association the Trenton ion and the Trenton Times .

Before our first CVC game against Ewing Mrs. Major said, "We are like a bunch o sticks, if one breaks, we all fall apart." Thi~ season, no one "b roke ", we stuck togethe1 and made it happen. Thanks girls for all thE great memories!!

Boys Basketball

The Varsity Boys basketball team had a tough season losing many close games. They finished the season 8-13, under first year coach Mr. Mahon. With only Kevin Wise and Chris Giovanni returning with varsity experience it took the young Irish team a while to get into a groove. Led by tri-captains Wise, Giovanni, and Dennis Cristofoletti the Irish won 2 out of 3 games in the Buckets by the Beach Christmas Tournament. Throughout the year NO also received contributions from seniors Mike Giovanni, james Hardifer, and Marc Iacono. With the additions of numerous juniors and sophomores, the Irish were challengers in every game and show great promise for the future.

Winter Track

The Notre Dame Indoor Track team had another undefeated season this year. With the loss of many influential team members and a Iso the loss of a beloved coach there were many high expectations for this season. As usual the team pulled together and accomplished another great season.

The dual season began in January and ended in March with an undefeated record.

We had a fantastic season, with a few runners qualifying to go to Nationals. The performances were excellent and a number of personal records were set. Also there were stellar performances by the distance teams this season. At Lawrence the Notre Dame Indoor Track Team claimed the Catholic Track Conference title.

Cheerleading The heart of Notre Dame athletics did not simply I ie in the hands of the players, coaches, and fans, but also through the 19981999 varsity cheerleaders. While cheering two double seasons these girls remained strong. They displayed school spirit as well as extreme dedication. The cheerleaders supported the many teams through both

winning and losing seasons. Under the leadership of captains: Jen Gallagher, Lauren Sunday, and Ajaka Roth, the cheerleaders became one of the most successful squads to pass through Notre Dame. Their difficult dances and stunts thrilled the crowds and demonstrated their great talent.

i ng program is represented with the JV squad and the newly formed freshman squad. All of the cheerleaders deserve recognition for their achievements and school spirit. They have truly made our athletic seasons more enjoyable as well as memorable.

Swimming The Notre Dame girls' and boys' swim teams both accomplished great things this year. Records were broken, goals reached, and memories made.

Under the leadership of Coach Henry DeSandre, the girls' swim team went 6-1 in CVC action. They captured the Valley Division title and went on to take second place at the Mercer County Tournament. Senior captains Christine Williams, Andrea Nath, and Katie Federico led the team to the second round of states. The first time in many years that the girls' team has reached the second round. Seniors Susan Brogan, Alex Kl ug, Jen Abitabi lo, and Katie Roberts; junior Debbie Plytinski; sophomores Jen

Sink, Michelle Erwin, Mollie Nieswand, Katie Byrne, Jessica Ranson, and Kara Bogus; and freshmen Ashley Augustine and Stephanie Kram I added a tremendous amount of depth to the team.

Special congratulations goes to Christine Wi II iams. She has broken a total of sixteen Notre Dame school records and four Mercer County records. This season, Christine broke two Rider Pool records in the 50 free and the 100 free.

The boys' swim team went 7-2 this year as senior captains Bryan Fredericks and Ryan Brown led the team to a fourth place finish at Counties. Juniors Garrett Groesbeck, Sean Donahue, Tim West, Dan Troy, Matt

Collins, Dan Pietrzak, Steve Schaffling, and John Howarth; sophomores Bobby DeSandre, Dan Strszunski , Dave Nath, and Mike Choquette; and freshman Nick Hoover contributed to the strength of the team . The boys made it to the first round of states but unfortunately lost. Sophomore Bobby DeSandre broke a pool record at West Windsor Plainsboro and two school records.

The boys' and girls ' swim teams look forward to continued success next year. The underclassmen have left the seniors with great memories that will last a lifetime. It is now time for the Class of 2000 to step up and lead the team, just as the Class of 1999 led them.

Wrestling The wrestling team gave a strong showing this year despite having a young team and injuries at key weights. Seniors Bill Lazorik, Lou Leva and Devon Moore led the team to a good early start . At the CBA tournament Lou Leva, Ben Vereen and Bill Lazorik each took a first at the 135, 140 and 145 weight classes.

Ice Hockey

With the start of a brand new season brought many hopes for the NDHS Hockey squad.

Headed by seniors Joe Maher, Mark Staniec, Joe Pukala, Lev Tarnovskj and Chops, the Irish were on there way to another title in the eve.

The Irish pounded opponents at will for the most part of year going 12-1 through their first

13 games.With a mixture of young talent like scoring machine Rich Burby and "Physical" Phil Kanka, the Irish were able to have depth through a II four I i nes throughout the year. A spunky Tom Stronski, Matt Wargo, and goalie Pat Hannigan added an alternative style of playing. The Irish won the

Lawrence Christmas tournament with a 4-3 win over rivals Bishop Eustuse. Even though the Irish were eliminated in the first round of the state tournament by Bergan Catholic, they still had a great year and were all very proud of them.
