Mr. Thomas Humphrey

What do we think of when we hear the name Mr. Humphrey? In our Notre Dame family, he is our lovin8 8randfather. We can all relate the warm feelin8 we 8et from Mr. Humphrey when he shares his love and knowled8e of 8reat literature from Beowulf to Paradise Lost, and the many loud thuds on the desk while tryin8 to explain syllables and accents on words. Mr. Humphrey is a proud 8raduate of 8t Joe's and went on to teach and eventually became the vice principal at Trenton Hi8h 6chool. After he had finished teachin8 there, the call of the classroom brou8ht him into our Notre Dame family, and kept him here for the past 9 years. Here he teaches us to eschew ambi8uity, and that the best way to win an ar8ument is to confuse someone by callin8 them a pusillanimous punk. It is a pleasure of the seniors to know Mr. Humphrey and an even 8reater experience to be tau8ht by such an intelli8ent and seasoned individual. One Bucket at a Time BY THOMAS HUMPHREY written 10 days after September 11, 2001

Soot-covered, exhausted, determined, they stood amid a pile of rubble and dug, one bucket at a time. And they passed along contents sifted for disposal, one bucket at a time. Those unnamed heroes, one bucket at a time, passed before their sweat- and tear-stained eyes, the steel bits, papers and pictures of families, crushed in the inescapable collapse of work stations. One bucket at a time, America shed its tears of grief for the victims, for families and for their fears. Tears flowed fast as the myopic screen flashed the endlessly repeated, second incredible entry of jet fuel into the heart of America's financial community. And the tears flowed easily, one bucket at a time, amid the screams, the pain and the panic all over America. Hypnotized viewers phoned schools, fathers and siblings, and rushed to caress children crying for a reassuring hug. And for days it continued ... one bucket at a time. Blood flowed into life-saving bags at Red Cross centers, and flowed again into life support systems in hospital burn units. And it continued all over America, one bucket at a time. One bucket at a time, on street corners, in shopping malls and in theaters, the dollars mounted and counted coins conquered hate and filled the buckets with love, one bucket at a time. Churches, long lonely and dark, filled with song. Prayers passed heavenward, pleading for pardon and mercy. Daily, the press released one more name at a time. And memorial services began the healing of the pointless pain of broken families, talented and young. America mourned the many forgoing graves, while the heroes continued to dig for closure, one bucket at a time. A nation nearer to unity joined in singing for God's blessings on America. The flags unfurled. Leaders called for calm and a return to life. Summer faded and darkness fell, and slowly the nation awakened to a new reality. Someday again, summer will see fatherless children playing at beach shorelines, building sand castles and skyscrapers, filling little plastic buckets, one bucket at a time. New life begins. New tongues will speak forever to glasses raised in toast to heroes dead and living. And while we work for peace, the images of Ground Zero vivid still, we search for answers, one bucket at a time. 3

On the horizon are professors preparing research and studies to excite your deepest questions. Holding your hands are Kairos buddies and Freshmen Peer Leader group members who stand in awe of your hearts beauty. Out yonder are thousands of young people who cant wait to be your roommates, team mates, class mates and life mates. Wow! Makes you a little dizzy just thinking about it! Take a deep breath. You are more than ready for this next big step in life. All the treasures that you . have collected over the past years will be right there waiting for you to visit in the silence of your heart. Your friends will never be further than a text message a way. Your parents will relish every call and every visit home. Your dreams are calling you forward and it is time to follow them! God has such wonderful plans for each one of you. When you feel unsure and a little scared, know that you are most solidly in His hands. He is crafting you into an amazing human being and He cant wait for the world to discover all you have to give. So, take one more glimpse back. Dear Class of They had vision. It is a simple sentence that sums up the accomplishment of all those people who had a part, big or small, in opening Notre Dame 50 years ago. What they did has stood the test of time. They bought enough land so that the school could grow. They refined the building with oak and marble to give it a sense of quality and permanence. They installed an elevator when no other school in the area had one. They made an auditorium and backstage area with amenities that to this day make us the envy of our sister schools. They made classrooms large enough in size so that divisions could be made as needed. Finally, they set up an educational philosophy that holds steady more than two generations later and is attracting students from three times the area of the original population. Quite an accomplishment, wouldnt you agree?

Dear Class of 2008, You have come to a major crossroads in your lives-the end of your years at Notre Dame High School. Think back to your first days at Notre Dame as an uncertain freshmanyou have grown spiritually, physically, socially and intellectually over the last four years. Hopefully, Notre Dame has become an important part of your life-you have made good friends, been touched by teachers who love you and have been there to nurture you as well as teach you. You have touched each of our lives. We have been enriched by your spirit, compassion, sensitivity, and sense of humor. Each one of you have helped to make Notre Dame the excellent school it is by all you have shared of yourself your time, talents, gifts, and energy. You are ready to move on, and so you should be. New beginnings are times of great anticipation and excitement. New beginnings signal an end to one phase of your lives. Endings can be painful, especially as we leave all that is familiar friends, teachers, routines, etc. that we have grown accustomed to with each passing year. This yearbook is a collection of memories, a reminder of a special time and people in your lives.

But what lesson is there in all that for you? The lesson is an easy one: make all your decisions, your actions, your accomplishments with the same test of time in mind. In 50 years, what will people say about what you have done? Strive to leave that imprint on something, on someone. Senior Volleyball Night Senior Volleyball Night is a fundraiser for the Make A Wish foundation. Various seniors come together to make their own teams while playing against their classmates and having a great time. This year, the senior class raised $400 to the Make a Wish 路 foundation.

The students in Cherry Tree Lunches come to school early in the morning to make brown-bag lunches for homeless pre-schoolers. These students hope to make 4000+ lunches this year!

The National Honor Society consists of members who exhibit qualities of leadership, service, character, and scholarship. NHS aids students seeking help academically through a comprehensive tutoring program. Members assist the office staff on a daily basis as Student Guides, participate in fund raising events for charities, and represent the school at Open House. NHS also offers a scholarship to incoming freshmen. Members of the National Honor Society lead their peers by example.

Art Club The Art Club is a very relaxed and informal club designed to. give art students more time to stay in touch with their creative side. 'rech 'ream.Volunteers These students volunteer many hours of service within the technology department. They were instrumental in building/putting together the new 8101 lab. NO benefits through there wonderful eager diligent service, they benefit by learning about wiring and switching and other network tasks. They also were instrumental in setting up our computer connection to NOs student abroad this year (we spoke live to him in Germany). They also offer much other assistance to many other users in the community.

Irish American Club The Irish American Club brings a diverse group of people together to have fun learning about Irish culture. We do many hands-on activities such as making Irish soda bread, a favorite snack in Ireland, and Irish potatoes. Along with cooking, we watch Irish sitcoms to better see the culture come alive on a TV screen. One important part of the culture is the treasured Irish dancing. In this club we get a beginners course on the elegant dance. This dance requires much skill, hard work, and determination. If you are to choose a great club, choose this one.

Mock .'rrial Mock Trial is equal parts Varsity Sport, Performing Arts, Academic Competition, and Social Club. Each year the New Jersey Bar Association provides a case, including a witness statement and evidence. The Mock Trial team investigates the evidence, develops theories, trains lawyers, and gives their witnesses character to bring them to life. We then bring our team to the courthouse and compete head-to-head with other schools in a realistic courtroom setting. In November 2007, the members of the Notre Dame Model United Nations Delegation , which represented Mexico and the NGO Africare, joined over 1,250 students from all over the United States at the Rutgers Model United Nations in New Brunswick to debate and pass resolutions on contemporary world problems such as malaria, child labor, depletion of fish stocks, and microfinance. In April 2008, Notre Dame Model Congress delegates, representing Texas and Colorado, debated and wrote b!lls on national topics such as economic relations with China, fedral ethanol subsidies, cargo port security, and water preservation. Students, in prepartion for the conferences, meet once a eweek, as well as research on their own .

Operation Smile Operation Smile is an international organization that brings medical and surgical services to children all over the world. They specialize in helping children with facial deformities. Operation Smile is not sponsored or linked to any government; it is strictly a volunteer organization. At Notre Dame, this club works to fundraise for Operation Smile to help with the cost of the operations.

Science Bowl The Notre Dame Science Bowl Team competes against a number of New Jersey and Pennsylvania high schools at the Regional Science Bowl at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in February. The Notre Dame Peer Leaders is a dynamic organization dedicated to introucing incoming freshmen to the faith-filled environment of the Notre Dame family. This is accomplished by guiding small groups of incoming freshman on Orientation Day and by leading numerous group activities throughout September. Leadership skills are taught to new Peer Leaders in their sophomore Religion class , which they all tak together. The Peer Leaders organization offers members the challenge of using their unique talents , ideas, and newly-acquired leadership skills to raise money and help numerous charities by participating in extensive activities throughout the year.
