MILTON GLASER’S HISTORY Milton Glaser was born June 26, 1929 in New York City. Milton Glaser is one of the most well-known graphic designers in the US. Glaser received his education at High School of Music and Art in Manhattan. In 1951 he graduated from Cooper Union. Then, he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna with a Fulbright Scholarship where he was instructed by painter Giorgio Morandi. In 1951, along with Reyonld Ruffins, Seymour Chwast and Edward Sorel, Glaserfounded the Push Pin Studios, which even got to have an exposition at the Louvres Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. In 1968 Glaser founded New York Magazine with Clay Felker. Glaser was the president and the design director. The magazine was famous so its design was imitated by many other mahazines.
MILTON GLASER’S HISTORY For a period of seven years Glaser, along with Jerome Snyder, would write one of the most popular columns in the New York Magazine called The Underground Gourmet, which was a guide to cheap restaurants in New York. reason of its popularity. In 1974 Glaser founded his own design firm, Milton Glaser, Inc. in Manhattan where he is still working. Glaser has exhibited his work in well-known places like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1975, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1977, Lincoln Center Gallery in New York in 1981 Glaser, along with Walter Bernard founded WBMG in 1983 in New York City. WBMG is a publication design firm so they have released periodicals, newspaper and over 50 magazines around the Globe.

While in a dynamic and lively atmosphere the work done at Milton Glaser Inc. mixes a variety of design disciplines. They work with print graphics for corporate and institutional marketing including logos, stationery, brochures or signage. At Milton Glaser Inc. they also do interior design of restaurants, shopping malls, supermarkets, hotels and other commercial spaces. Glaser also works in the design of over 300 posters for film, theater, music, publishing and commertial products.

The logo was designed in the late 1970s to promote tourism in New York City. What in the page on the left looks like something that anybody could draw in a few seconds as Milton Glaser did while going on a taxi, became one of the most popular logos in the world. The logo was transformed after 9/11 attacks in to a symbol of support. The black spot on the heart simbolizes where the World Trade Centre was. The original logo is the most imitated logo design in the world and Glaser even used it on an adevertisement campaign for the airline Jet Blue.

Glaser’s logos are very strong and not very complex. In these five examples he used the circle to show a strong unity and a maximum of four colors per logo. The logo in this page is quite straightforward, there is rainbow inside of the circle, which is the name of the brand.

Milton Glaser Inc. has been in charge of the design of the logos and packaging of Brooklyn Brewery for the last 28 years. Brooklyn Brewery, which originally the owners wanted to call it Brooklyn Eagle, but Glaser suggested to leave it just with Brooklyn, has had great sales thanks to the identity, packaging and advertisement design. Milton Glaser Inc. has done a great variety of iterations of the logo making almost a different logo for a different mood.
POSTERS
POSTERS Bob Dylan’s poster was published in his singer’s greatest hits album in 1966. The poster was made for the CBS records. In the image Dylan has the kaleidoscope hair. The poster features a striking image of Dylan’s profile with streaming, multicolored hair ,also called kaleidoscope hair, and is considered a masterpiece of ‘60s graphic design.

AWARDS In 2009 Milton Glaser was recognized with the National Medal of Arts presented by resindent Barack obam in the White House. The medal was given to Glaser for his outsatnding achievements and support of the arts. The National Medal of Arts is managed by the National Endowment for the Arts.
