It’s just that each person has already given the usual suspects—the heart-shaped cards, perfumes, framed images, truffles and couples’ massages.

For the season of love, AvidLifestyle talked with three local cookie companies, each offering different cookie shapes, sizes, flavors and decorations designed to send a personal message of love. It’s the Valentine’s Day gift you can also dip in your latte.

WHERE COOKIE CREATIVITY BLOOMS

Andrea Goossens has always thought outside the cookie box and has never used one of those commercial cookie cutters. “I started designing and building my own cookie cutter using a 3D printer, customized to a particular cookie idea,” she says. Goossens is the founder of Sugar Bloom Cookies and a former winner of the “Christmas Cookie Challenge” on the Food Network.

Each cookie order allows for the maximum amount of personalization. Sugar Boom offers flavors beyond the shop’s basic cookie dough made with more expensive European butter and Nielsen-Massey's Madagascar vanilla bean paste. “We can add chocolate chunks, freeze-dried strawberries and other flavors to the dough. It just adds another dimension to the decorations and makes it more creative than just one kind of cookie,” Goossens says. The flavor options extend to the icings.

“For Valentine’s Day, we’ll do a lot of red velvet cookies—in the actual dough or icing. We’ll never do the same thing on the top as we would on the bottom. I care so much that it tastes like a very good cookie and not just that it looks like one,” she says.

Goossens has come up with new designs for February’s big holiday. “We’ll have a marching band cutout drummer that says: “You make my heart beat!” Another one has a cowgirl and cowboy theme. There’s still plenty of room to personalize them with a name or initials,” she says.

When you order, Sugar Bloom offers five tiers of design and decoration. “Each tier adds more details. For tier five, there are no limits on the design or the colors you can use,” Goossens says. Perhaps Sugar Bloom’s ultimate offering is a giant cookie with a portrait hand-painted in color on the icing. “It is true to size—as big as your face—and very customizable,” she says.

COOKIES THAT PLAY BALL

“I love designing cookies for families and couples. It’s all about personalizing them with names, colors and words of love,” says Katy Curry, otherwise known as Cookie Lady Katy. She has built a reputation for baking perfectly designed cookies for businesses ranging from the Denver Broncos to The Broadmoor.

The Denver-based bakery crafts hand-cut shortbread cookies topped with vanilla royal icing and detailed decorations. Numerous cookie shapes are available starting, naturally, with a heart.

“For Valentine’s Day, we get a lot of orders for sports-related cookies for a person’s favorite sport—baseball, golf, football and tennis,” Curry says.

WHEN DATE NIGHT COMES AROUND, couples know they will face The Big Question. No, not “Will you marry me?” or “Should we have another kid?” It’s the eternal riddle: “Where do you want to eat tonight?” A successful romantic evening often depends on finding a Goldilocks dining situation.

The restaurant lighting should be subdued but not so dim you can’t see the sparkle in your partner’s eyes. The background music can’t be so quiet it goes unheard or so thump-y you can’t talk without shouting.

The service, the menu and the sips should set the stage for conversations and maybe a little romance. In other words, you—not the restaurant—are the center of attention. Two south metro eateries were born to be the kind of places where couples, friends and family love to gather.

INTIMATE DINING WITH A BIG EASY ACCENT

For Louisiana-born Lilli Black, hospitality was the first inspiration for Nolia, short for “Magnolia,” her cozy, year-old Centennial eatery.

“Our vibe is providing a space, service and food that makes it easy to connect. When you come to my restaurant, you’re at my house for dinner, and I want you to feel comfortable,” Black says.

She believes date night calls for ordering strictly shareable dishes. “You order a little charcuterie, a few small plates and share everything. You talk about the food and really get involved with each other,” she says. Besides, you might have casual hand contact as you both grab for the same appetizer.

Charcuterie has become the go-to order for first dates. “It takes away any awkwardness in a new dating situation about what to order since a board gives you many tastes,” Black says. Nolia’s serious charcuterie menu offers more than 100 choices of meats, cheeses, jams, spreads, mustards and pickles.

The small kitchen dishes a roster of Louisiana and European favorites, including perfectly cooked sous vide filet mignon, tender butter-poached jumbo shrimp with creamy grits, and Nolia’s best-selling item, Louisiana-style crab cakes. Wines are well suited to sampling, with more than 30 reds and whites poured by the glass.

That chill Big Easy vibe rules Nolia’s service, too. “We’ll never dump all your food on the table at the same time. You shouldn’t be trying to shovel one dish in your mouth so that the other dish doesn’t get cold,” Black says. “We would rather you sit there for three and a half hours and drink wine, hang out with us and enjoy it.”

HOW TO ROMANCE A RESTAURANT

Wherever you are, couples across the planet are making plans for date night, whether they call it soirée à deux (French) or noche de cita (Spanish).

Ambli Global celebrates the international nature of gathering with an experience that transports diners out of the day-to-day humdrum, according to Pariza Mehta, co-owner of the eatery at Belleview Station.

Three spaces in the eatery suit different couples’ needs and wants. A lively lounge greets diners with small tables and an urban “buzz-y” vibe, Mehta says. The modern, elegant dining room has a quieter, conversation-friendly ambiance. Just opened is an eight-seat intimate back bar ideal for date nights. “The menu is unique with dishes combining Asian and Latin American flavors,” she says.

Ambli Global takes its name seriously with a roster of dishes with Indian, Asian, East African and Latin American influences. Among the tastes are crispy tuna rice, Kuku Paka (coconut chicken) and an Indian plate with fresh naan, plus lobster dumpling shooters in red coconut curry created at the table.

Mehta says the Ambli experience is built on interacting with a corps of perceptive servers and bartenders.

“Some tables want silent service without many interruptions,” she says. “Some couples want us to order for them or make special cocktails. The ones who seem to have the best time are spontaneous.”

It’s obvious when the “magic” is happening. “We’ll see a table celebrating, and they have that energy,” Mehta says. “The guests and the servers are having fun with each other. Then we know we’ve done our job.”

“The Moonlight EXpresso is my mom’s recipe. She would always make this coffee liqueur for handmade holiday gifts, so I called her after completing distilling school and asked if she still had the recipe. It has been one of our biggest award winners,” Baker says.

The 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirit Company was founded in 2014 by Ryan Thompson, the company’s president, as a tribute to the brave soldiers of World War II’s 10th Mountain Division. Based in Gypsum, the small-batch distillery produces an array of products, including 10th Mountain bourbon; rye whiskey; American single malt whiskey; brandy; potato vodka; a sage-infused, peach-vanilla cordial; and Colorado Clear Mountain Moonshine.

Named the “Craft Distillery of the Year” in 2021 by RackHouse Whiskey Club, the brand honors veterans from the 10th Mountain Division, including Pete Seibert, one of the founders of Vail, and the products capture the spirit of Vail’s outdoor lifestyle.

“As a nine-year-old distillery, this recognition really means a ton to our entire team of fourteen. We’re grateful and will keep on making our spirits as long as people keep on drinking ’em!” Thompson says.

Shortly after P.T. Wood and his brother, Lee, received their distilling license in 2012, they launched Wood’s High Mountain Distillery in Salida, starting with a 150-liter pot still built in the 1880s that they nicknamed “Ashley.” Along with its modern stills, the company produces Sawatch American malt whiskey, Tenderfoot malt whiskey, Alpine rye whiskey, Dawn Patrol single malt whiskey, Distiller’s Reserve whiskey series, three styles of gin, potato vodka and an elderberry liqueur.

Inspired by London’s dry-style gins, the company’s Treeline gin is distilled from grain spirits with Colorado-grown juniper. Its Treeline barrel-rested gin employs the extra step of aging in American white oak barrels. At the same time, a marriage of Rocky Mountain juniper, cascade hops and elderflowers give the Mountain Hopped gin an earthy, floral spirit.

“We’re not trying to copy anybody else’s style,” P.T. Woods says. “We like to put a unique stamp on everything.” Accordingly, Ashley and P.T.’s signature handlebar mustache are prominent graphics on the labels.

WHILE MANY FURNITURE SHOWROOMS present generic catalogue furniture vignettes, Colorado Style Home Furnishings takes a much more unique and creative approach for people shopping for furniture and home decor. It prides itself on curating an extensive selection of top-quality furnishings with a modern contemporary twist, unique luxury furniture pieces and some one-of-a-kind treasures. In turn, shoppers can create an eclectic look for their homes, giving the appearance of a collection of furnishings having been amassed over time.

“We’ve created a store where new furniture pieces and new collections arrive weekly so every time you visit, you’ll find something new to discover. It’s like a treasure hunt,” says co-owner Brent Simon.

For 50 years, Alpenrose has been a gem in Vail’s dining scene; these new additions provide a unique opportunity for enjoying classic Austrian cuisine in comfort.

COCKTAILS, ANYONE?

There’s no shortage of watering holes in Vail, and each has its quirks and personalities: Go to Los Amigos for margaritas and to watch skiers slide down Pepi’s Face; Vendetta’s is where ski patrol hangs out; Bully Ranch at Sonnenalp is where you go for après mudslides. But after you’ve hit the iconic locales, how about diverging from the norm?

Bad Kitty Lounge, tucked away on the creek level by the Covered Bridge, only seats about 25 people, but it’s worth the wait. With a design aesthetic that borders on manic and an expansive spirits selection, Bad Kitty features hand-crafted cocktails with no pretension. The bartender (usually only one can fit) is happy to create something bespoke or pop the top on a Montucky; all are welcome.

Vail’s newest cocktail experience is The Gambit Bar. Opened in January 2024 at The Sebastian-Vail, this sophisticated—yet inviting—gathering destination celebrates crafted classics with a modern interpretation in both taste and presentation. There’s nothing quite like soaking away a day in a luxury spa. Almost every hotel offers a tranquil escape with various treatments to soothe tired muscles and souls. VAIL IS A LITTLE LIKE CHER, Oprah and Taylor—so famous that a one-word name says it all. Internationally, skiers and boarders have “Vail” etched on their alpine bucket lists. For serious foodies, “Vail” means prime dining time in the Colorado mountains. Serious foodie or not, we’ve all gotta eat, and these top spots will please the palate every time!

DINING REVOLUTION

Through March, while the celebrated champagne powder slopes are open, the all-star chefs are in the fully staffed kitchens to feed the hungry multitudes, and the Vail Valley— including Avon, Edwards and Minturn—has undergone a recent culinary revival including Michelin Guide honors. Most of Vail’s familiar dining icons like Matsuhisa and ski-in Beano’s Cabin (which boasts a fresh new menu) are still thriving. However, diners are flocking to refreshing newcomers ranging from chef Richard Sandoval’s Stoke & Rye, a Coloradoinspired grill in Avon, to health-inspired Wild Sage feeding the needs of highly active skiers, golfers and hikers up the valley in Eagle.

Kim Fuller sat at a reserved table during Vail’s dining revolution. “It’s exciting to see locals opening up these new establishments, and chefs come out with these amazing menus,” says Fuller, editor-in-chief of Vail’s Covered Bridge magazine who has written about local fare for more than a decade.

A one-of-a-kind, high-end immersive eatery on Vail’s Solaris Plaza is grabbing a lot of attention. “Chasing Rabbits has a super fun entertainment focus,” Fuller says. “You can sit down for a Mediterranean dinner then go down the rabbit hole and enjoy an arcade or the Prohibition-style nightclub. So, it’s great for families and also for late night dinner. It’s definitely unique to Vail.”

THE RIGHT BITES

Ashley Rasnick built a career as a concierge property manager. She helps some very picky guests find exactly what they desire including where to eat based on their likes and dislikes. However, as a working person living in a pricey place like Vail, she also knows where to find good deals on great food and drink.

“Many of our guests always try to get into top restaurants like Matsuhisa, Mountain Standard and Hooked in Beaver Creek for seafood. If they can get reservations, they always report having great meals. I tell them there are many restaurants in the Valley where they can get a table and it’s not so expensive,” she says. An added plus in the towns of Avon, Edwards, Minturn and Eagle-Vail is easy access of I-70 and a precious rarity: free parking.

“Italian” or “pizza” is often the answer to the big dining question: What do you want for dinner? “Vail Village has fine dining Italian at La Nonna Ristorante, but there’s also Alpine Pizza Company, a new take-out place in Lionshead that has good pan-style pizza. An old favorite is Vendettas—we go there for a slice after skiing,” Rasnick says.

Outside of Vail, Avon’s recently launched Fattoria is focused on rustic pasta dishes while the new Il Mago in Edwards is dishing artisan wood-fired sourdough pizzas made with organic flour. Ristorante Ti Amo in EagleVail has a dedicated following for everything from panini to pasta puttanesca. “Ti Amo is dependable and very popular. They just opened a second location in Eagle,” Rasnick says.

SAY YES TO AFFORDABLE DINING

Meals that won’t break the bank are available if you know where to look. “If we get done skiing or mountain biking anywhere from Vail to

Eagle, we make our way to Rocky Mountain Taco, a local taco truck chain that has a bunch of locations. The one at the Vail Brewing Company tasting room in Eagle-Vail is near the golf courses. That’s where you’ll see a lot of locals stop for a beer and good Mexican food,” Fuller says. Avon also offers good bang for the buck in dining. “At Pho 20 you can get a huge bowl of Vietnamese noodles and broth big enough to share at the bar,” she says.

You can even find cheaper eats in Vail Village. “My favorite place in to eat in Vail Village is El Segundo,” Rasnick says. “They have excellent tacos and margaritas. Any time my friends or family visit Vail, we go there during happy hour.”

APRÈS IS EVERYTHING IN VAIL

“Après” may be the single most cherished word in the Vail Valley and the state’s other ski towns. More than just a French-accented happy hour, it’s a state of mind and not just for post-skiing.

“It’s post-golf, post-work, post-shopping but before dinner. Basically, it’s après everything,” says Fuller. The aptly named Après Cafe at the Vail Racquet Club in East Vail fits that late-afternoon mood, Fuller says. It’s a familyfriendly place with well-made burgers, pizzas and cocktails. Après experts agree that one must-see destination for late-day drinks and snacks is The Remedy, the classy bar upstairs at the Four Seasons.

“The Remedy is easy to recommend,” Resnick says. “You sit outside around these big firepits with a great view. One of the best treats is a mug of their signature hot chocolate.”

single malts. Many of the same visitors also stroll to the 10th Mountain Whiskey & Spirit Co. tasting room to sample award-winning Colorado spirits.

Two consensus après favorites are located in Edwards. “Drunken Goat is really wonderful for paninis and charcuterie boards with a good happy hour,” Rasnick says. Nearby, Craftsman Brew Co. in its newly expanded quarters was made for post-slope gatherings, according to Fuller. “Craftsman is a fun sit-down gastropub with lots of hearty, yummy options with a big menu of small plates,” she says.

OLD IS THE NEW AGAIN

The most charming of the towns on I-70 around Vail is Minturn, which has become a dinner destination. For decades the centerpiece of the community was the historic Minturn Saloon, known for cold beer, hot enchiladas and a decidedly funky mountain atmosphere. After a total renovation, the establishment, originally built in 1901, has made a comeback.

“The owners have reopened and reimagined the Minturn Saloon. It’s the same style of cuisine but very elevated,” Fuller says. Fresh on the menu are dishes like birria tacos and pork cheek tostadas. Down the street, a meaty tradition is maintained at the golf course-free Minturn Country Club. “We’ll go there when the family visits because it’s a cool experience. They get to cook their own steaks if they want to,” Rasnick says.

Minturn’s other Mexican cuisine attractions include the brick-and-mortar flagship location

of Rocky Mountain Taco. At some point before making your eastbound trip, stop at Vail Mountain Coffee & Tea—there’s one in Minturn and Avon. The roaster offers fresh roasted beans, a serious tea selection and coffee cupping sessions can be scheduled with a master roaster in its tasting room.

STOP AND SMELL THE BAGELS

Fueling for the slopes may require something more inspirational that the same-old scrambled egg buffet the hotels put out. Instead, locals recommend a handful of places worth braving Vail’s early morning chill.

Topping the short list of a.m. spots everyone recommends is Village Bagel with locations in Edwards and Gypsum. “They make everything by hand. It’s about as East Coast as you can get out here,” Rasnick says.

For fresh tastes, the must-visit choice is Hovey & Harrison, a combination cafe, bakery and market in Edwards. “Hover and Harrison is the best, especially for baked goods. It’s a wonderful place to meet for breakfast and lunch or get cookies and pastries to go,” Fuller says. Avon’s Northside Kitchen has a split personality. It’s a cafe that dishes maple bacon doughnuts and house-baked English muffins by day and transforms into a sit-down bistro by night complete with an extensive wine list.

Other morning spots include East Vail’s West Side Café & Market, the brunch-y Vintage in Vail Village, Avon’s kitschy Route 6 Cafe & Lounge and the Columbine Cafe & Bakery offering quiche Lorraine to apple strudel. Lunch at the latter spot always includes dessert.

Finally, work up a high-altitude sweat skiing the course at the Vail Nordic Center, where you can make a stop at Grill on the Gore—famous for its comfy soup, chili and cornbread buffet with all the fixings and many beer choices.

Vail’s great gastronomic upgrade is far from done. “Iron Chef America” star chef Makoto Okuwa has announced that he will debut a high-end sushi bar in the lobby of The Grand Hyatt Vail hotel in early 2024, and certainly, there’s more where that came from.

Nordic skiing is a great fitness tool and a wonderful way to experience the state’s beautiful scenery

NORDIC SKIING BEGAN to gain popularity in the United States in the early 20th century, with the establishment of ski clubs and the formation of the National Ski Association in 1905. This era saw an influx of Scandinavian immigrants bringing their skiing traditions. It became more widely recognized in the U.S. with its inclusion in the first Winter Olympics held in Chamonix, France, in 1924.

The 10th Mountain Division* in the Centennial State played a significant role in popularizing skiing. Many veterans of the 10th Mountain Division went on to contribute to the growth of skiing in the civilian sector, including the development of ski resorts and ski schools.

Skate skiing began spreading beyond Scandinavia, where the Finnish military had used it in the ’50s and ’60s, and its adoption increased in other Nordic skiing regions, including North America. Thanks to its dynamic and efficient movements, it garnered attention, offering a faster-paced alternative to classic cross-country skiing.

Both ski techniques are excellent forms of exercise, and why not just pop over to a trailhead near you, strap on your skis and burn some calories?

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

If you’re new to the sport, head to your favorite outfitter for skis, boots, bindings and poles. In addition, you should grab wax and waxing tools to keep your skis gliding smoothly. You should also:

but if you’re new to the state or winter sports, be sure your base layer is moisture-wicking under your insulating layer. Consider a windproof outer shell if you’ll be on wide-open trails or the temps will be low. Hat, gloves, sunglasses—of course.

Bring a small backpack items and a place to stash your layers should you need to shed some. Throw in a small first aid kit and your cell phone in case of an emergency. If you’re unfamiliar with the territory, take a trail map, as some trail areas may not have cell service.

Get a groomed trail pass.

Nordic trails—especially at Colorado ski resorts, you may need a pass. Check before you go.

ANGELA OTTEN grew up with horses, and it’s become a simile for her kitchen design career

ANGELA OTTE N GREW UP ON A CAMP for kids where horseback riding was part of daily life. She was riding by age three, trail guiding when she was eight and, eventually, training horses. The progression of it is very much like her career trajectory from a foal’s first steps to mastery.

When Otten graduated with a fine arts degree, she wasn’t completely sure what she was going to do. “I was hired for my first job partially because the guy liked my little horse stipple drawing on my resume,” she laughs. The job, a laminate sales role, allowed her to establish her gait as a salesperson and taught her how to work with builders, designers and architects.

From there, she took on roles that piqued her interest, and her ability to learn quickly and follow her curiosity led her to learn not only about kitchen design and sales, but also how the intricacies of a home work. “I did my own general contracting, which meant I was opening up walls and moving kitchens from one side of the house to the other. I learned about structures, plumbing, electrical and how a house works.”

After fourteen years working with top cabinet manufacturer William Ohs, Otten galloped into her current career stage when she opened Inspire Kitchen Design Studio in 2017. At Inspire, she’s trained her staff to understand the house from the inside-out, too, giving them a unique perspective when working with clients.

“When we go into a home, we know when things can move, when they can be built bigger, how much it’ll take to change the whole layout, and what’s involved with plumbing and electrical,” she says.

Otten’s designers aren’t only trained to be knowledgeable, but they are also hired for their approachability, setting them apart from some of the other upscale design companies. “We are high-end, but we have a more casual atmosphere, which allows people to come in and be themselves. We like to get to know the people behind the kitchens.”

During her 24 years of working in kitchen design and construction, Otten has been recognized for her talent and leadership with NKBA awards, two Home of the Year awards from Colorado Homes & Lifestyles and the Luxe RED Award. She’s also been published more than 25 times in different publications.

She measures her success not by the awards and recognition, however, but how her work feels. “I’m doing what I want to do,” she says. “I’ve built an amazing team with talented people who like to work together. It makes me happy.”

Otten says her leadership approach stems from a cohesive team environment and desire to demonstrate grace during challenging times. From a personal perspective, some of it also stems from her lifelong relationship with horses.

“Horses have this amazing calming sense,” she says. “Working with horses has helped me learn to have confidence in what I do and not be afraid to move forward. It helps me say, ‘This is what we’re going to do even if we have failures along the way. We are going to make it happen.’”

In addition to teaching her the value of hard work, how to be successful and the level-headed calm required to run a business and manage people, horses provide Otten an escape from her hectic business life. “I go horse camping,” she says. “I’m out off the grid for five to ten days sometimes and just get away from it all.”

That self-care grounds and recharges her so she can continue to focus on what really matters. As a female business owner, Otten strives to garner more support for other women in business and recently hosted a Pink Party, bringing business owners together and supporting organizations like Transportation & Construction GIRL through an auction and raffle.

Her studio is nestled in the larger International Design Collection building with other manufacturing companies, creating a familylike, united feel to kitchen shopping. She’s been able to find likeminded companies to work with who help her see through a vision, no matter how abstract. “If I can engineer it, they’ll build it,” she says. “Having manufacturers who are willing to work with us and our crazy ideas makes me happy. We get to give our customers something that’s unique to them.”

As for the next five to ten years, Otten hopes to continue to see her business and the people in it grow. “I’m proud of how far we’ve come,” she says. “Mostly I’m proud of how everybody gets along and the talent they all have. It’s a great environment to be in.”

Fort Collins is host to many galleries and museums showcasing everything from handicrafts to fine art. For a unique—if not morbid—experience, visit the Museum of Art Fort Collins, where the current exhibits include “To See Inside: Art, Architecture, and Incarceration.” Boulder-based artist Sarah McKenzie painted large-scale paintings of prison interiors that are showcased alongside a variety of other works of art and creative writing by artists affiliated with the University of Denver Prison Arts Initiative. The unique exhibit reflects on the places and spaces of the U.S. prison system and its impact on the people confined within them. A second exhibit, “A Year of Killing” by Brooklyn-based artist and food photographer Henry Hargreaves, documents the final meals of men executed in the U.S. in 2016.

On a lighter art note, the Trimble Court Artisans gallery features works from more than 50 local artists in mediums such as fiber, jewelry, mixed media, pottery and more. The Global Village Museum exhibits art and objects from diverse world cultures in part to build mutual understanding and greater cultural competence. Its main gallery features rotating exhibits, while a permanent collection of world folk art, fine art, artifacts and musical instruments donated by local collectors and founding members of the museum are on display in the museum’s two other galleries. moafc.org

Ace Gillett’s is Fort Collins’ beloved underground cocktail and music lounge in the lower level of the Armstrong Hotel, and it’s the perfect spot to wind down on the first night of your romantic weekend away— especially if you’re staying at the hotel. The sultry vibe and ambiance are complemented by a live DJ spinning vinyl tunes from the restaurant’s vintage collection. The venue recently had a comprehensive renovation, and it has an updated menu. Of course, you can expect creative cocktails such as the Ruby Soho with vodka, Aperol, grapefruit cordial, lime, elderflower and seltzer or The Roof is on Fire with Ace’s Old Elk bourbon, demerara, angostura and flamed rosemary.

It will be nice to simply head up the beautiful, curved staircase or the elevator to your room. The Armstrong Hotel opened in 1923 and was the tallest building in town, boasting two

elegant dining halls, 41 guest rooms and various retail shops. After a long and storied past, including serving as home to the chapter of the American Automobile Association, barracks for the U.S. Army during World War II, changing and changing hands again, the hotel fell into disrepair and the doors were closed in the early 2000s as growth in the city moved south.

However, in 2002, Steve and Missy Levinger purchased the hotel and began a renovation to preserve and restore as much of the building’s historic fabric and character as possible. They recreated the original storefronts and the 1940s-era neon sign using historical photos, reproduced interior doors and transoms, and lovingly refinished the beautiful Douglas fir floors. Later, under ownership by Crystal Creek Capital, the building received yet another refresh, but the charm remains. In your room, you’ll see the old radiant heaters (although not in use today), beautiful antique-style rugs, steamer trunks-style side tables and, of course, those lovely, creaky historic wood floors. But these hints to the hotel’s bygone era are paired perfectly with today’s modern amenities you’d expect from a high-end hotel. thearmstronghotel.com

It’s hard to pass by a spot dubbed “America’s Best Breakfast” by Esquire Magazine, and it happens to be the perfect place to charge up for a fun-filled day. After more than 93 years, the Silver Grill Café has breakfast and cinnamon rolls down pat. It’s the kind of place you can expect to see farmers (in boots and cowboy hats) getting ready to go to work—but you’ve got to get there early to dine with those folks. And if you don’t, expect to stand outside waiting in line for your morning meal. You’ll find all the usual diner fare with a southwestern twist: corned beef hash and eggs, chicken fried chicken and eggs, veggie breakfast quesadilla, Benedicts, pancakes and, of course, the famous cinnamon rolls. Breakfasts are served with bottomless hashbrowns—and no, they aren’t some out-ofthe-freezer food service hashbrowns—they are freshly seared, golden-crisp chunks of boiled potatoes seasoned to perfection.

When John Arnolfo purchased the Silver Grill in 1979, the 1-room diner sat just 40 customers. It struggled for 7 years until Arnolfo saw cinnamon roll franchises taking off and decided to create his own unique version. Lory State Park, just west of Fort Collins, offers more than 20 miles of trails with beautiful views and ranging difficulty levels. Trails are open year-round and are open to hiking, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing and fat biking. Unless you brought your own, local rental businesses can have you easily covered for snowshoes, but if you want to rent a fat bike, do your homework and secure your bike rental before you go—those can be trickier to find.

1 P.M. TAKE A HISTORY TOUR

Franklin Avery founded First National Bank and was instrumental in developing water projects that enabled northern Colorado’s agricultural industry to flourish. In 1879, he and his wife Sara built a family home on the corner of Mountain Avenue and Meldrum Street, now known as the Avery House. Over time, the home was added onto to accommodate the couple’s growing family—a hallmark of the renovations being its distinctive Queen Anne tower.

Members of the Avery family lived in the house until 1962. Poudre Landmarks Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1972, and the organization worked with the City of Fort Collins to purchase the home in 1974. It then took responsibility for overseeing the restoration of the house. In 1981, it organized the Avery House Historic District Guild to assist with the project. The Avery House, Margareth Merrill Memorial Gazebo, a fountain and a carriage house are part of the Avery House Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Finally, beer—in the town that’s known for it! Food & Wine names Fort Collins No. 11 on the list of cities with the most breweries per capita. And although its present-day moniker is “Napa Valley of beer,” Fort Collins was a dry town until 1969—count ’em—36 years after Prohibition ended. Anheuser-Busch opened here in 1988, but the craft brewery movement started with the opening of CooperSmith’s the following year. Although it was the first, many more have followed, including New Belgium Brewery.

After a bike trip through Belgium, founders Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch had the idea to bring the Belgian brewing traditions home. In June 1991, they tested Fat Tire and Abbey Ale, the latter of which garnered a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival. In January 1999, New Belgium launched its branded bicycles. In the summer of 2003, they became a Certified B-Corp and 1% for the Planet member, with more sustainable practices to follow. In August 2020, Fat Tire became America’s first carbon-neutral beer.
