STARTING FRESH

I LOVE THE BEGINNING OF A FRESH, NEW YEAR. It’s a time to slow down after the holiday rush and to put some intentionality into the year ahead. I always have a long list of goals, and now is when I plan exactly how to achieve them. In years past, I’ve had the goal of partaking in dry January or abstaining from drinking for specific periods of time, as I think many of us do. It’s a great way to kick off the year, and in this issue, we explore the topic of drinking—or not drinking, as it were. I’m proud to share that my daughter, Haley Rae, has been sober for nearly a year by the time you’re reading this. And she bravely shares her story of why she gave up drinking and the effects of that decision (Sober Curious?, page 38).

Another brave young woman, Christina Haidemenos, shares her story of a brush with breast cancer that forced her to make a weighty decision to protect her health and well-being (Conquer and Survive, page 60). Wow! I am inspired by and proud of these strong women in our midst!

There are other ways to start the year fresh, too. Writer John Lehndorff takes us to a local sushi restaurant where you can get a surprise taste tour to light up your palate (Sushi Gem, page 24). Finances are something top-of-mind at this time of year, too. DENVER’S 20-SOMETHING KEDDJRA upends the local jazz scene

WHEN KEDDJRA walks into a jazz bar and takes the stage with her long, brown, curly hair; bell-bottom pants; and midriff tops, most attendees are taken aback. What could this 20-something woman know about jazz? Once she opens her mouth, her sultry smooth voice fills the room and her pointed lyrics reveal her day-in-the-life observational mind. It’s clear she’s one jazzer who knows what she’s doing.

“They don’t expect it,” she says. “But I think people enjoy what I do because they recognize it, and I’m able to put my own twist and style into it.”

While most of her peers listen to hip-hop or alternative rock, Keddjra is at home recording songs on her phone using the GarageBand app.

Music wasn’t always on Keddjra’s mind. She started down another career path, studying math and economics at the University of Colorado Denver until the pandemic stranded her at home. “I decided to take some time off school, and I thought about things. I realized life is short. Do I want to do the safe thing, or do I want to spend my precious time doing something that really makes me happy? I had something I wanted to say, and I decided I was

going to do it no matter what it took.”

She credits Nina Simone as her most significant influence. “I love how raw and real she was.” And she looks at Bob Dylan as inspiration in her songwriting.

Keddjra’s music is slow and sultry, with an almost spoken word–style, velvety vocals. She describes her sound as bedroom pop, chillout music. But her lyrics, filled with biting commentary, get the real attention. When asked why she titled her debut album “How My Friends Must Worry,” she replied: “Every

time I would play them a song, they be like, ‘That’s cool, but are you OK?’” She laughs, admitting her music expresses the darker, more introverted part of her life and not the goofy, fun-loving person most people know her as. “When I’m writing, I try to be as raw and real as I can be. I’m not scared to shy away from things or expose parts of myself people might not want to see.”

Her work caught the attention of Colorado Public Radio, who started playing her music and featured her in their Local 303 picks after she sent them some of her music and a bio. “I was really stoked because most of the music on my album I just recorded on my phone. It was very much a passion project and very personal to me.”

As she readies for a summer tour of the Midwest and East Coast, Keddjra is figuring out how to translate the music mixed on a phone app into a live show, and she’s loving every part of the process. “I love writing, creating, playing with other musicians and bringing out a side of me I don’t often get to show people. I’m just completely going for it.”

NOTHING SAYS WINTER like a steaming bowl of soup

CRACKING OPEN A CAN of Campbell’s might do in a pinch, but making a hearty pot of homemade soup is the perfect way to warm up your family after a cold day of winter activities.

CREAMY CHICKEN, BACON AND CORN SOUP

INGREDIENTS

1 tbsp. olive oil

1 leek, finely sliced

1 small brown onion, finely diced

1 clove garlic, crushed

2 slices bacon, diced

2 chicken breasts, diced

14.5 oz. canned corn

5 cups chicken broth

1 cup cream shallots, sliced for garnish

HOW TO MAKE IT

Heat oil in a large saucepan over gentle heat and cook leek, onion and garlic for 4 minutes until soft.

Increase heat and add bacon and chicken. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes. Add corn, then pour in stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Add cream and return to a gentle simmer. Season well.

Serve garnished with sliced shallots.

Make it Colorado proud: Next year, buy extra Colorado sweet corn to freeze and replace the canned corn. You can have a sweet, warm-weather moment savoring that Olathe gold.

LASAGNA SOUP

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE SOUP:

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 lb. sweet Italian sausage, casings removed

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 small onion, finely chopped

½ cup dry white wine

14.5 oz. can whole plum tomatoes, crushed by hand

2 cups chicken broth

1 tsp. dried oregano

½ tsp. kosher salt, plus more to taste

Pinch of red pepper flakes

6 lasagna noodles, broken into 1-inch pieces

4 cups baby spinach

¼ cup fresh basil, chopped

Italian bread for serving

FOR THE RICOTTA DUMPLINGS:

1 cup fresh ricotta cheese

½ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese, plus more for topping

¼ cup fresh basil, chopped

¼ tsp. kosher salt

Black pepper, to taste

HOW TO MAKE IT

SOUP: Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Crumble in the sausage and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and onion and cook until softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the wine, bring to a simmer. Cook until reduced and syrupy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the tomatoes, chicken broth and 3 cups water to the pot. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Stir in the oregano, salt and red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, about 7 minutes. Add the

lasagna noodles and cook until just al dente, 6 to 7 minutes. Stir in the spinach and basil and cook until the spinach is wilted, about 3 minutes. Season with salt, if needed.

RICOTTA DUMPLINGS: Stir together the ricotta, parmesan, basil, salt and a few grinds of pepper in a small bowl.

Ladle the soup into bowls and dollop the ricotta dumplings on top (about 2 tablespoons per dumpling). Top with an extra sprinkle of grated parmesan and serve with bread.

Fancy it up: Use fresh pasta instead of dried— just add it when you add the spinach and basil, as fresh pasta only needs to cook a short time.

SLOW-COOKER CLASSIC FRENCH ONION SOUP

INGREDIENTS

6 tbsp. butter

4 large yellow onions, sliced and separated into rings

1 tbsp. white sugar

2 cloves garlic, minced

½ cup cooking sherry

7 cups reduced-sodium beef broth

1 tsp. sea salt, or to taste

¼ tsp. dried thyme

1 bay leaf

8 slices of French bread

½ cup shredded Gruyere cheese

⅓ cup shredded Emmental cheese

¼ cup freshly shredded Parmesan cheese

2 tbsp. shredded mozzarella cheese

HOW TO MAKE IT

Heat butter in a large, heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add onions; cook and stir until translucent, about 10 minutes. Sprinkle onions with sugar; reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring constantly, until onions are soft and caramelized, at least 30 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Stir sherry into onion mixture; scrape the bottom to dissolve the small bits of browned food.

Transfer onions into a slow cooker and pour in beef broth. Season with sea salt; stir in thyme and bay leaf. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 4 to 6 hours.

Preheat the oven broiler 10 minutes before serving. Set an oven rack about 8 inches from the heat source.

Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet; broil until toasted, 1 to 2 minutes per side.

Lightly toss Gruyere, Emmental, Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses in a bowl. Fill oven-safe soup crocks ¾ full with onion soup and float a bread slice in each bowl. Top each with about 2 tablespoons cheese mixture.

Place filled bowls onto a baking sheet and broil until cheese topping is lightly browned and bubbling, about 2 minutes.

Make it a real timesaver: Cook onion and sherry mixture, then refrigerate. In the morning, simply toss it into the crockpot and follow the remaining instructions.

JUST SAY ‘OMAKASE ” AT MAKIZUSHICO to enjoy a surprise taste tour of deep-sea delights

MAKIZUSHICO IS A GENUINE dining surprise hidden in a decidedly nondescript Littleton strip mall. Newcomers find themselves entering a soothing space with soft lighting and surfaces covered in natural bamboo and hardwood.

One side is flanked by a wonderful sushi bar, a great place to see the chefs and their knives and torches in action, and the wall of upper-shelf Japanese whiskies and sake bottles behind them. Makizushico was designed with one goal in mind. “I wanted this place to be relaxing so people can focus on the fish,” says owner Shurong “call me Jay” He.

When it comes to his menu, Jay is not interested in offering something for everyone. “I’m a sushi chef, and I keep us focused on fresh seafood. My menu is small, and I’d call it ninety percent traditional Japanese,” he says. You’ll find few vegetarian options, no tempura or teriyaki entrees, nor endless bowls of ramen.

The secret word at Makizushico is “omakase.” If you’re not familiar with the term, it has become popular enough that Merriam-Webster recently added it to its dictionary.

“The first thing to know about omakase is that it’s a surprise,” Jay says. It essentially means: “Trust the chef to feed you.” It’s a tasting menu reflecting your preferences, but the sushi chef chooses each of the 15 to 18 pieces of raw fresh fish. The meal includes miso soup and salad, plus sake pairings are available.

Makizushico’s omakase comes in two prix fixe levels based on market prices for the seasonal seafood. Jay brings in more than 100 varieties of fish annually from Tokyo’s famed Tsujiki Market and elsewhere. Each piece is beautifully garnished and presented individually, not arrayed on a boat or platter. The upper-level tasting features include rarer, pricier items such as sea urchin. One of the more striking presentations is sashimi served under a glass bell filled with cherrywood smoke. “It looks so good, and the smoke adds just a little extra flavor,” Jay says. Each piece of Japanese snapper, snow crab, mackerel or bluefin tuna comes ready to appreciate. Wasabi restraint is encouraged.

Don’t go looking for a long list of sushi rolls filled with inauthentic ingredients like California rolls muddled with fake “krab.” The shortlist of special rolls features gems like the Makizushico Roll, carefully composed with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, jalapeño and cucumber inside, and sweet Hokkaido scallops. Each bite offers fresh flavors that pinball around, lighting up taste buds.

The effect is also experienced in memorable cold plates like Kabocha Sake, sweet winter squash puree, fresh salmon and fried leeks dished in a refreshing, light dressing.

If you chat with your neighbors at the sushi bar, they will also likely wax poetic about favorite non-sushi dishes, a fact that makes Makizushico’s owner cringe. A husband-and-wife home flipping team uses their OWN FAMILY FOR DESIGN INSPIRATION

KIM AND DUSTIN NYHUS LOVE QUALITY ’70s-era homes that haven’t been touched since they were built. Think: shag carpet, wood-paneled walls (not the pretty kind) and copious amounts of mustard yellow, avocado green and burnt orange. They are the husband-and-wife fix-and-flip team behind New House Properties.

“We gravitate to 1970s ranches and tri-levels like this,” Dustin says. “We try to focus on the Greenwood Village and Englewood areas because you can get original floor plans that are typically pretty good already. So, with minor changes and additions for modern life, you can turn a home into something really special.” That was the couple’s hope when they bought this Greenwood Village tri-level to fix and flip. Scope creep had different ideas. As the couple got into the project, they realized that doing the flip right and making a great family home would require more than just cosmetic changes. And they’d need an architect to do it. Enter Cult Creative.

The modern farmhouse style is apparent as you approach the home, and it is a perfect way to blend the home’s sections. The far-right and far-left brick sections are the original footprint of the house. The Nyhuses, in conjunction with the Cult Creative team, came up with inventive ways to capture more space, taller ceiling heights and an open, airy feel conducive to today’s lifestyle.

Dustin likes having control over the cabinetry in the homes he and Kim flip. He tries new processes and design elements, and in this house, he incorporated the curved island, which Kim had longed to do. The perimeter cabinetry is topped with white quartz, while the island has gray quartz to set it apart. Delicate glass pendants keep the space bright and don’t impede views through the room.

“I really love the entry. That was a light fixture I had been wanting to use for years and just have never had a space to use it,” says Kim. “When we finished the herringbone floor, I just had a hallelujah moment, where I sat in there and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I am obsessed with this entry.’” The striking white oak floor helps keep the space bright yet sophisticated, and the chandelier by Petite Friture adds movement and a touch of drama.

“We thought we were going to do a pop-top and that we would take the roof off and be able to use the existing framing and just build up from there,” says Brooklyn Doherty, co-owner of Cult Creative, along with co-owner Erin Anglin. “Once we got into demolition, the existing studs were somewhat rotted, and there was a lot more that needed to be removed than we had originally anticipated. That was a big surprise, but it gave us an opportunity to have a little more flexibility in the floor plan.”

It also allowed the Nyhuses to harness their inspiration for the home’s design. “We put ourselves in every home we design—we design it with our family in mind because we have three boys, two dogs, and we’re a super active family,” Dustin says. “We design the layout and features around what we would need and want in a home, hence the toy garage in this particular house.” They use themselves as the model for the active Colorado family to ensure they’re creating homes buyers want.

Cult Creative suggested a general contractor to guide this now-larger project to fruition. It’s not uncommon for us to see projects that increase in scope over the course of the project as the design develops,” says Justin Bride founder and principal of Ascent Contracting. “There’s more work that is either necessary or will provide more value such as vaulted ceiling.”

Dustin uses the houses they remodel as testing grounds. “We flip homes because we love the hands-on design,” he says. “I also use it as a beta testing ground to develop products. A lot of it is built in my shop, from all the cabinetry to any of the special features of the home. I like finish carpentry and enjoy the prototyping of various products and techniques.” Dustin built all the cabinetry and built-ins in this home, the stairwell design element, and the dining room feature wall.

As the couple looked to their family for design inspiration, they quickly realized the original plan for the kitchen would not work. “The kitchen was much smaller, and when we walked the space during framing, we completely changed it because we realized it would not work for our family.” As such, they added more cabinetry and a giant pantry. “Even after the drawings were in place, we were able to make creative design decisions while the project was in process,” Bride says.

The double height in this room, which the former version of this home certainly did not have, is a hallmark of contemporary homes. It creates a whole-home connection by being open to the loft above. Using the total height with the fireplace feature wall and flanking bookcases highlights the vastness, although the seating arrangement is still intimate and cozy.

The couple liked the quad-level floor plan for a larger family. It allowed for more bedrooms and separate toilet rooms in the shared bathrooms, so the kids don’t have to take turns getting ready, which makes getting out of the house in the morning much smoother. “We were envisioning having a game room up there for the kids, a little hangout area, and then some separation from the primary suite, but still within arm’s length because you’ve got to be able to communicate with the kids,” Dustin says. “With this layout, it just worked so perfectly to be able to communicate wherever they were in the house.”

In addition to making sure the house functions well for potential buyers, aesthetics was, of course, top of the design duo’s minds. “I’m a person who just likes a lot of light in a house, and so that’s always the first thing that I’m looking at when we walk in: How can we maximize the light?” Kim says. “I can’t believe how bright this house is. It was so dark before—it was like a cave with all those dark colors on the carpets, and it had a bunch of stone on the walls. It is such a huge transformation.”

Being one of the first homes in the neighborhood to undergo a major renovation can be tricky. The Nyhuses didn’t want to go too far outside the context of the community’s style, but they also wanted to be sure to be on the front edge of the trend for the area. “I think the house is modern, but it doesn’t stick out like the sore thumb,” Kim says. “It is maybe a little more modern than what’s in there, but we’ve started to see other houses receiving some updating.”

Design-obsessed Kim is always searching for new ways to make spaces feel unique, so when she saw a photo online that inspired an idea for the dining room wall, Dustin got busy in his workshop. “Since this is a very open house, it felt like it would differentiate the dining space,” Kim says. Enveloped in the dark wall color and shining with the West Elm gold globe light fixture, the room has a separate-yet-together ambiance.

The primary suite is vast and inviting. There’s a double-door entry and a sliding barn door to the bathroom. It has a private balcony overlooking the backyard. In addition to ample space for the bed, side tables and a large dresser, there’s a seating area perfect for reading or morning coffee.

The primary bathroom is equally grand, with ample cabinetry, double sinks and an oversized double shower room with an incorporated soaking tub. The shower room takes its unique look from the agglomerated marble tile from Arizona Tile. SOBER CURIOUS?

The whys and hows for getting sober or cutting back on your alcohol consumption

THE STATISTICS

According to studies outlined by The National Center for Biotechnology Information, approximately 14 million Americans—7.4 percent of the population—meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or alcoholism. Over the years, scientists have documented the effects of alcohol on many of the body’s organ systems and its role in the development of a variety of medical problems, including cardiovascular diseases, liver cirrhosis and fetal abnormalities. Dr. Omar Elhaj, chief medical officer at All Points North, a residential and outpatient care facility in Edwards.

First and foremost, we think of liver problems associated with alcohol consumption. The effects of alcohol on the liver include inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis) and cirrhosis (progressive liver scarring). The risk for liver disease is related to how much a person drinks: the more you drink, the greater your risk. Gender also may play a role in the development of alcohol-induced liver damage. Some evidence indicates that women are more susceptible than men to the cumulative effects of alcohol on the liver.

The liver is not the only cause for concern. In a meta-analysis, researchers compared the relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. They found clear evidence that heavy drinking was associated with increased stroke risk, particularly in women. Similarly, long-term heavy alcohol consumption has been identified as an important risk factor for stroke in young people—in particular, drinking to intoxication is associated with a significant increase in the risk of ischemic stroke in both men and women ages 16 to 40 years old.

Additionally, alcohol consumption can be associated with high blood pressure and heart disease, as well as depression and anxiety, among a host of other ailments. It’s not just the major medical issues that are problematic. “Dehydration is an extremely concerning side effect of alcohol consumption, even at lower consumption levels, because it impacts our electrolytes, it impacts our ability to actually think and function,” Dr. Elhaj says. “One of the other things that alcohol impacts very significantly, even at lower levels, is our circadian rhythm, our sleep habits.”

Even lower levels of consumption affect the body in ways you might not realize are extremely damaging. The lymphatic system flushes toxins from our body, but as Dr. Elhaj explains, the brain has no lymphatic system. Its means for eliminating toxins is sleep. “You don’t have to have an alcohol use disorder to have a negative impact on your sleep from alcohol,” he says. Giving up or even cutting back on alcohol consumption can lead to less inflammation and better cognitive function. “It’s going to improve your brain function and your brain wellness,” Dr. Elhaj says.

TURNING IT AROUND

In addition to decreasing your risk of disease, cutting back or quitting drinking can improve mental well-being and help weight management by reducing overall caloric intake. Also, as Dr. Elhaj indicates, it can improve sleep quality and cognitive function, leading to better concentration and memory. It also reduces your risk of impaired coordination and judgment, which can lead to accidents or driving under the influence.

In some cases, people who drink experience strained relationships with family or friends—especially if drinking results in exaggerated behaviors such as arguing or other harmful actions. Reducing alcohol consumption can lead to more positive social interactions, potentially improving relationships with friends, family and colleagues.

If you’re curious about where you fall on the alcohol spectrum, CAPS Mental Health and DUI Services offers patients an evidence-based assessment. “One that we use is called the MAST—the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test,” says Lawrence Wall Jr., Chief Operations Officer & Clinical Director at CAPS - Mental Health & DUI Services. “When clients come in, we usually start there.” Based on the results, the CAPS team can make a recommendation for a level of treatment suitable to your situation, be it general outpatient treatment, which they offer in-house, or a more intense level of care for people with higher levels of alcohol dependency.

Wall, who first got certified as an addiction professional in Florida, then earned an MBA in healthcare, a Master of Science in mental health counseling and is currently working on his Ph.D. in clinical sexology, says one of the consequences of alcohol addiction is broken trust. “Clients come in and say, ‘Oh, I just went out with some friends for a couple of drinks and ended up staying all night at the bar. My wife or my husband was angry and wanted to know why I didn’t come home until two or three o’clock in the morning?’ This starts to break the trust in a relationship.” Trust is not always the only casualty of alcohol dependency.

IN HER WORDS

I stopped drinking in February 2023, after a three-day bender—a bender which caused me to blow a job interview that effectively determined the direction of my life. I realized the next day, as I lay in my bed sweating and shaking from alcohol withdrawals, that if I couldn’t stop drinking long enough to prioritize something so important to me, I had a serious problem. I’ve tried and failed to get sober numerous times for many different reasons, but this was the realization that helped me to truly commit to my recovery.

The most challenging part of giving up drinking for me was navigating the difficulties of life without a crutch. When you become accustomed to numbing your feelings, experiencing a normal range of human emotions sober is a shock to your system. It’s hard, and it makes it even more difficult to stay sober.

I lost a lot of friendships. I think that’s almost a universal experience for people who are newly sober or in recovery, though—you realize how many of your relationships were built around drinking. Most of those friendships just fizzled out when I stopped going out drinking. However, my close friends have been incredibly supportive of my recovery and have cheered me on every step of the way. They celebrate every milestone and are very vocal about how proud they are of me. I also have a strong support system of friends I’ve made since getting sober, many of whom I met in Alcoholics Anonymous or other similar groups.

Getting sober and staying sober has not been easy. It’s something I wake up and recommit to every single day—sometimes multiple times throughout the day. Giving up drinking has positively impacted my life in almost every way. I got to know who I am at my core, and I love that person. The relationships I have with the people in my life now are deeper and more meaningful. I have had so many unbelievable experiences that I never would have had before I got sober.

HOW TO SAY NO

“It’s becoming increasingly popular not to drink— whether it be long-term, for dry January or for health reasons,” Haley Rae says. “And it doesn’t mean you have to miss out! There are great mocktails on almost every bar menu, and more and more major alcohol companies are putting out NA options. When you first stop drinking, you might feel out of place or like you’re the only one, but you’re not. And no one is thinking about what’s in your cup.”

The first step in saying no is understanding why you’re doing it—reasons come in all sizes, big and small—and none should be discounted. Maybe it’s the health risks. Perhaps you’re just tired of feeling sluggish and hungover. Maybe drinking has taken a toll on your relationships. Maybe you missed out on an opportunity that could have changed your life. Whatever your why is, it’s valid, and it’s oftentimes what’s going to keep you committed to your goal of cutting back or quitting drinking.

“We have the illusion that alcohol enhances our joyous experience of life. Actually, it doesn’t,” Dr. Elhaj says. “We can do the same things and enjoy them the same amount without alcohol. It’s just an illusion. We can still have the same joy from conversations with close friends without alcohol, and we can have the same joy from wonderful meals without alcohol. We don’t really need it.”

One of the most effective motivators when trying to achieve any goal is making it public—or public-ish. Share your decision with friends, family or a support group. Having a support system can provide encouragement, understanding and accountability. Consider joining groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or talking to a counselor. There’s even a group for people just looking to commit to a limited amount of drinking, Moderation Management. If an in-person or even online group of strangers is not for you, Wall suggests enlisting a group to join you on your journey. “It’s very challenging to do some things on your own—without other people connecting with you,” he says. “To connect with others, suggest to a group of friends, family or coworkers to do it together: ‘Let’s go on a 30-day break from drinking together during the holidays.’ You can root each other on and support one another.”

You might need to reconsider who you spend time with—at least at the beginning of your sober journey. As Haley Rae mentioned, some relationships are based on drinking, and once you stop, those relationships might just naturally fizzle. And that’s OK— let them go. You’ll also need to learn to recognize situations, emotions or environments that trigger your desire to drink. Then, you can find healthier alternatives or coping mechanisms to address these triggers.

“Find activities that you truly enjoy doing that don’t involve drinking and make them a part of your everyday routine, Haley Rae says. “Seek out a support system—having people you can spend time with who don’t drink or are willing to spend time with you without drinking makes a huge difference.”

In addition to surrounding yourself with people who support your decision to quit, finding alternative ways to cope with stress and triggers can reduce the likelihood of turning to alcohol. Develop healthy stress management techniques like meditation, yoga or deep breathing exercises. Wall, who will celebrate 18 years of sobriety on January 23, also suggests journaling, using daily affirmations, writing down daily self-reflections and practicing gratitude.

If you find you’re struggling to maintain your commitment, consider professional help from a healthcare provider or addiction specialist. They can provide guidance and support tailored to your situation and potentially prescribe medications to help manage withdrawal symptoms if needed.

All Points North offers a variety of levels of care, from outpatient counseling to detoxification and in-patient residential treatment. Also, understand that cravings may arise. Having a plan in place for dealing with these moments, whether it’s calling a friend, going for a walk or engaging in a favorite activity, can increase the odds that you’ll navigate the urge and stick to your intentions.

Last—but certainly not least—celebrate your wins! Whether it’s a week, a month or a year without alcohol, recognizing your progress can boost your motivation to continue. Also, don’t forget to celebrate the improvements in your health, relationships and overall well-being.

Ensuring your investments and assets will carry you into A COMFORTABLE RETIREMENT

MANY PEOPLE REALLY nerd out on financial planning and investing, but if you’re not one of them, don’t worry. We’ve got some easy steps you can follow to ensure you’re on the right track, measuring what’s important and taking actions that will set you up for a worry-free retirement.

We, of course, can learn from those with healthy financial lives to understand what’s essential and what the key indicators of economic security are so we can see what we’re doing right and where there’s opportunity for growth. Possibly, one of the most important considerations is having proper guidance. Warren Buffet wisely said, “Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.” Wealthy individuals and couples typically have access to a team of financial advisors, including investment professionals, tax experts and estate planners, to help them make informed decisions and optimize their financial strategies while minimizing risk. This is not something you’re meant to manage all on your own.

“In simple terms, this is an individual or couple who has a strong balance sheet (right balance of liquid, semi-liquid, retirement, personal and non-liquid assets), a strong cash flow (easily lives under means), a strong portfolio of working assets (stocks, bonds, businesses, real estate—beyond personal homes—and alternatives), and if still working, a strong growing career one loves and is appropriately rewarded in economic and non-economic ways,” explains Joseph Janiczek, CEO and Founder of Janiczek Wealth Management in Denver that serves high- and ultra-net-worth individuals and families.

Of these four main categories that determine financial security, he goes on to say that it’s crucial to be sure all four are optimized during working and wealth-

creation years and that at least three can easily handle abnormal economic scenarios during retirement. For instance, you want to test your desired spending level at the top 10 percent and bottom 10 percent of market conditions to ensure it’s not based solely on good economic conditions. Also, you want to be sure your retirement savings can handle a top-heavy spending situation in the event of unexpected expenses.

One thing some people don’t always consider as part of a financial security plan is creditworthiness and access to credit. Although maintaining a low level of debt relative to overall net worth is important, having the means to leverage debt and use it for wealthbuilding opportunities when that makes sense is helpful. Even though you may have the means to pay in cash, it can be beneficial to use credit wisely.

Having cash to use as needed means having a portion of wealth in liquid assets, as Janiczek mentioned, allowing for quick access to funds in case of emergencies or for investment opportunities. Cash reserves or easily convertible assets contribute to liquidity.

In addition, having a well-diversified investment portfolio with a mix of stocks, bonds, real estate and other assets allows you to spread out your risk—in other words, minimize it—and maximize your returns. Global investments take advantage of opportunities in different markets and reduce risks associated with regional economic fluctuations. Additionally, multiple and stable income streams, such as your investments plus business ventures and passive income, contribute to financial security.

Of course, the goal is to build net worth—the total value of your assets minus your liabilities. A high and growing net worth is a crucial indicator of financial security. But how do

you know if you’re on track? Janiczek Wealth Management—which has been on the Barron’s Top 1200 U.S. Financial Advisors list ten years running, among many other accolades—says identifying the key performance indicators and then having a report with detailed information showing what areas are strong, weak, vulnerable and require immediate action is an excellent first step. What do you do when you’ve built a significant level of wealth? It’s the perfect time—if you haven’t already done it—to engage in comprehensive estate planning to protect and transfer assets efficiently to the next generation. This may involve the use of trusts, wills and other legal structures. In addition, you may want to engage in philanthropy and social responsibility initiatives that are important to you. Having the financial means to do so can positively impact society.

Beyond financial metrics, a high quality of life, including access to education, health care, travel and leisure activities, is an essential indicator of financial security and happiness. “Since money is a means to an end, and not an end, we focus on having money serve the client, not vice versa,” Janiczek says. “You balance short- and long-term by aligning wealth to short- and longterm needs, ambitions and opportunities.”

on taking her health into her own hands

PREVIVOR: A PERSON WHO TAKES ACTION to reduce or eliminate genetic cancer before it develops or is detected in his or her body. In other words, by being proactive, the patient can survive a genetic predisposition to cancer. Christina Haidemenos proudly wears that badge.

Haidemenos was 10 years old when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She recalls much of her adolescence involving her mom’s doctor appointments and treatments. Just four years later, her mom passed away. Feeling like a cloud had been around her family for some time and wanting to move forward and enjoy life, Haidemenos and her sister opted not to get tested for the gene.

In the summer of 2022, she began to feel differently after a heart-to-heart conversation with her stepmother. From that, she realized the possibility of information at her fingertips, knowing whether or not she’d get breast cancer, which was precisely the encouragement she needed to take the genetic test. The results came back positive for the BRCA2 genetic mutation. Her sister did not test positive.

Feeling utterly devastated and frustrated, Haidemenos realized that those feelings were not helpful. She quickly began researching her options—either wait and get tested regularly or be proactive and address it head-on. With an 87 percent test positivity and feeling it wasn’t a matter of if but when, at just 32 years old, she decided to move forward with a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy to lessen her chances. “I would be lying if I said it was an easy decision. I was sad to lose my breasts (and not be able to breastfeed when I do have children),” she says. “However, I know it was the right decision for me. I made the decision when I realized that it was either anxiety and waiting or getting the surgery and getting it over with, that and knowing that my partner would love me regardless.”

With an excellent support team by her side and The Breasties (an online community of women who have all gone through either a prophylactic mastectomy, had breast cancer or any other type of breast-related surgery) as a go-to resource, she was prepared to take on the big day. “Talking to other people about their experiences and surgery almost normalized it all a bit. It reassured me that breast removal is not the end of the world, and I could still live an incredible life. In some ways, I feel like I can go through anything now,” Haidemenos says.

Feeling safe with an incredible team of surgeons, Haidemenos underwent surgery in March 2023. However, she encountered a problem that required follow-up surgery along with the support of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for 14 days. Still, with a positive outlook, she felt the chamber was a good experience to help her body heal.

With renewed hope and a positive outlook for the future, Haidemenos decided to pursue a latent dream: hosting golf retreats in destination locations. Having always been a golfer and loving the game, she got to work planning the retreat while still in her hospital bed. A successful long weekend in October 2023 with 14 women in San Diego has Haidemenos on track to continue hosting the next event. With two retreats already on the horizon, she explains, “I ultimately want to bring people together. It’s not just for women—it’s an inclusive place for anyone.”

Now persevering with an “I’ve got it mentality,” Haidemenos sees the positive aspects of her journey and continues to share her experience on her social me dia, where she can connect and inform others going through the same or similar journey. She says, “In the future, I will be a lot more aware. This has helped me with decision making, with trusting my gut and my intuition.”
