Brent Children’s Centres Autumn Programme Sept - Dec 2016
Welcome!
Children are at the heart of all that Barnardo’s does, and since taking over the running of 14 children’s centres in Brent we have been lucky enough to connect with thousands of local families with under-fives. As the UK’s largest children’s charity, our work is very wide-ranging. Barnardo’s believes in children and we are there to support any child, young person or family who needs it – not just the most vulnerable. Even the most practised parents or carers need help or advice sometimes, and everyone is welcome at any one of our network of local children’s centres, no matter what your circumstances. From stay and play sessions for young ones to burn off some energy, to parenting courses, dads-only workshops and baby massage, there’s likely to be an activity nearby that will appeal to you. The 14 centres we run on behalf of Brent Council cover the whole of the borough, including Kingsbury, Kilburn, Queen’s Park, Harlesden, Wembley, Willesden and beyond, and our new timetable has been put together to make it easier for you to see what’s happening on any day of the week and to plan your visits. We would like to welcome hundreds of new families over the coming months, so please drop in to any centre, speak to a member of staff and find out what’s happening for you and your children. We’re really looking forward to meeting you. Marie Moody Assistant Director of Children’s Services Barnardo’s London Autumn Programme Sept - Dec 2016

Discover the benefits of healthy living
Families who want to find out more about the benefits of healthy eating and active lifestyles can sign up for a new programme launching in children’s centres across Brent. HENRY – or Healthy Exercise and Nutrition for the Really Young – is an eight-week course designed to help tackle child obesity by helping parents and carers make positive lifestyle changes. It encourages families to take practical steps to encourage healthy eating and emotional wellbeing from an early age, helping you to deal with the real issues you are likely to face when trying to introduce and maintain healthy habits. Check the timetable to see when HENRY is running in your area.

Focus on da challenges ily of family life
Special sessions to help parents and carers handle the challenges of family life will be held at two children’s centres in the Harlesden and Wembley this autumn. The informal Family Focus group sessions cover everything from fussy eating, toilet training and behavioural difficulties to sleep and child safety. The workshop offers practical solutions that can help parents and carers cope with everyday issues and support their children’s development. The aim is to help parents and carers to feel more confident in managing some of their children’s challenging habits. Sessions are held at St Raphael’s Children’s Centre in Rainborough Close, St Raphael’s Estate, on Wednesdays from 1.15pm to 3pm and at Alperton Children’s Centre in Ealing Road on Thursdays from 1pm to 3pm. Booking is required.

“I moved to London from Romania in February 2010, just after I finished my studies in social work. Coming to the UK it was a big challenge but I was determined to build a better future. I started to work as a nanny hoping that one day I would step up to social work. “One of the mums I was working for encouraged me to get involved with my local children’s centre, so I applied and started to work as a volunteer at Church Lane Children’s Centre, one day per week. At the beginning I was a bit reserved, but as time went by I became more confident and gained new skills and knowledge. “As a volunteer I’ve taken part in a range of activities including stay and play sessions, healthy eating, admin and home visits with a family support worker, where I helped to interpret. I now have a better understanding of all the ways children’s centres support families, and have been fortunate enough to be offered lots of training and development. “After one year of volunteer work, a temporary vacancy came up for the role of Community Involvement Worker role. I applied for it and was successful, and enjoyed working with the lovely and supportive team at Kingsbury Children’s Centre. I feel a big debt of gratitude for being given the opportunity to gain some experience working with children and families, and would like to say a big thank you to the whole children’s centre team in Brent.” Autumn Programme Sept - Dec 2016
