THE SCHOOL SAFETY RHYME Are you aware of the dangers on your journey to school? Have you seen a car driver being a fool? If so, we would like to hear what you have spotted throughout the year!

Fact You’re ten times more likely to have an accident outside your school.

SLOW IT DOWN You are four times more likely to die if someone hits you at 40mph than if they are doing 30mph. Speeding vehicles take longer to stop and you’re more likely to be killed if the car is speeding and the driver more likely to be injured. A few miles per hour can mean life or death.

Quick quiz • What is the speed limit near to your school? • What’s the most important reason for not speeding? • What can we do to stop speeding?

BUCKLE UP Not wearing a seatbelt can kill, even on short journeys. A low speed crash can be enough to cause death or serious injury even at 30mph and you are twice as likely to die if you don’t wear a seatbelt Anyone over 14-years-of-age must wear a seatbelt in the front and back of a car by law.

Quick quiz • Do you have to wear a seatbelt travelling at 30mph? • Do you see people driving without seatbelts when they arrive at school? • What can we do to make people wear their seatbelt on short journeys?

KEEP OFF THE ZIG-ZAG LINES The zig zag lines outside your school are there to make it safer for you to cross the road. Some people park on them to drop off

at the school gate. This is dangerous and against the law because it makes it harder for other drivers to see you.

Quick quiz • Do you see vehicles parking on the zig zag lines outside your school? • How do you think we could stop drivers from stopping on the zig-zag lines?

DRIVING AND PHONING DON’T MIX Everyone knows using a phone while driving is dangerous. The same goes for fiddling with SatNav systems while driving too. Drivers are four times more likely to crash if they’re on the phone and driving at the same time.

And it takes them twice as long to react if someone steps out in front of a car while they’re doing it. It is illegal to use a phone while driving, even at traffic lights or in a jam.

Quick quiz • Is there any time that it’s OK to use a mobile phone while driving? • Do you see people using phones while driving near your school? • How can we stop people doing this? • Why is using a hand-held phone while driving dangerous?
