Update
Welcome, dear readers, to the June issue of The Brent Magazine. Mine is not the only portrait gazing out from these pages. There are 63 others. They are the councillors in our supplement, who were elected, or re-elected, at the local elections in May, which is the biggest exercise of local democracy in Brent. The councillors for your ward represent you so it is worth acquainting yourself with them. Staying at the grass roots; this month also sees the start of Brent in Bloom. It is your opportunity to display your gardening to a wider Brent audience, and perhaps nationally as well. Besides councillors and gardeners, we are also highlighting carers. They play an invaluable role and in Brent Carers’ Week in June, we will be honouring their hard work.

Monique’s moment Kensal Rise based author Monique Roffey has been short-listed for the Orange Prize for Fiction 2010 for her second novel – The White Woman on the Green Bicycle. What have you been nominated for? It is for my second novel ‘The White Woman on the Green Bicycle’. I’m one of six on this year’s short list for the Orange Prize – a competition for the best women writers. I was delighted but surprised to be nominated; there is a really strong short list again. Amazingly, I’m not the first Brentbased writer to make it onto the Orange short list. Zadie Smith won the Orange prize in 2006 and Maggie Gee was short-listed in 2002.
What is your novel about? The book is set in Trinidad in the Caribbean, where I was born. My mother, who is half-Italian and half-French, moved there with my father in the 1950s. She once said ‘I arrived with a suitcase and a green bicycle’ and that stuck with me and became the seed of the novel. It unfolds over five decades and is a dark thorny story dealing with the island’s politics after winning independence from the UK. It’s a romantic thriller and has a few real people in it such as Brian Lara and Trinidadian Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
How did you start writing? I always had a pen in my hand as a child; I remember scribbling stories on the walls. Then as a teenager I kept a diary and wrote. I became a journalist, writing for ‘The Independent’ and as a freelancer for a variety of magazines so fiction was a natural progression. I write in the mornings in my pyjamas with a cup of coffee in hand. My influences are the Dominican novelist Jean Rhys and St Lucian poet Derek Walcott.
What are your plans for the future? To spend some more time back in Trinidad; write my memoirs, and maybe even take a sea voyage.
“I always had a pen in my hand as a child; I remember scribbling stories on the walls.”
How long have you lived in Brent? I’ve been here since 2006. I lived in Wendover Road, Harlesden, for three years and recently moved to Kensal Rise. The first draft of my book was written in Trinidad, but the rewriting and editing were all done during the years that I was living in Harlesden.
What’s your favourite spot in Brent? Harlesden High Street is lively. The area has Roundwood Park, and a great gym. I think the high street is the most eclectic and diverse place that I know. You can buy pretty much anything: Polish bread, real Turkish delight, and great jerk chicken. Then there are Brazilian and Portuguese cafes to enjoy. Harlesden’s diversity is amazing.
‘The White Woman on the Green Bicycle’ is published by Simon & Schuster; the Orange prize will be announced on 9 June; visit www.moniqueroffey.co.uk

Let’s Waste Less! National Recycle Week
21 to 27 June Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Recycling
Did you know that UK households throw away about one million tonnes of waste electrical items each year? Anything with a plug or a battery counts and should be recycled.
Disposing of household electrical items • If buying a replacement electrical item ask in the shop about how to get rid of the old one. Most major stores can help. • If the item is in good condition why not ask a local charity shop if they want it. • You can take any household electrical item to the Brent Council Reuse and Recycling Centre, Abbey Road, NW10 7TJ. The centre is open from 8am to 4pm seven days a week, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. During National Recycling week, every WEEE item taken to the Reuse and Recycling Centre can be exchanged for a reward token for your local school. • Call StreetCare to arrange a bulky collection for larger items. Fridges are collected free of charge but there maybe a cost* for other electrical equipment.

Waste watchers Brendan Phelan and Jackie Brodie work at Brent Council’s Reuse and Recycling Centre. Words RACHEL GARDNER
They are here to deal with unwanted goods from TVs and spectacles to mattresses. Recycling assistants Brendan Phelan and Jackie Brodie are two of a four-strong team at Brent Council’s Reuse and Recycling Centre in Abbey Road, Alperton. “We try to get the people who visit here to recycle as much as possible,” explains Brendan. “A lot of them come and then return with even more stuff. We encourage them to have all their items sorted before they arrive because it makes life easier all round. It’s nice to get to know the regulars who come at least once a week.” The
centre accepts 50 different items including glass, paper, cans, juice cartons, clothes, light bulbs, cookers, microwaves, radios, stereos, batteries, scrap metal, furniture, tins, garden waste, glass bottles and jars, magazines, shoes, and fluorescent tubes. It has around a dozen labelled containers to make sure visitors know where different types of items go. “We regularly check the containers,” said Brendan. “It’s to make sure people don’t mix up different materials and aren’t putting things in there that they shouldn’t.” Jackie is also on hand to help. “You have to be into recycling to do this job, but it’s very rewarding,” she said. “Sometimes we get people who turn up with the contents of a whole house because a loved one has died. They think there is no option but to put it all in landfill but that’s not so – we help them sort it and recycle what they can.” Items taken to Abbey Road, which has
a charge for dealing with goods brought in a van, are sent to different places to be recycled or reused. For example, clothes are sent to charities or Third World countries while wood is turned back into wood chip and old mattresses are reborn as rags. Unfortunately, some goods still end up in landfill, which the council is working to reduce. The centre is managed by West London Waste Authority on behalf of the council. It is open from 8am to 4pm seven days a week, except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. “This place may be full of junk, but we still take pride in where we work and aim to keep it as neat as possible,” added Jackie. “Visitors often comment on how tidy it is.” Visit www.brent.gov.uk/streetcare2.nsf email streetcare@brent.gov.uk or call 020 8937 5050 for more information about the centre.

A sound story An artist wants your thoughts about the Olympics for a project to celebrate the 2012 Games. Photographs: ISABELLE PLASSCHAERT. On your marks, get set.Your opportunity to qualify for a place in a special squad is here. Artist Lorenzo Belenguer wants 20 residents to take part in Testimonies – an artistic project inspired by the Olympics – which will be gathering residents’ memories about the 1948 Games in London and people’s expectations and hopes for London 2012. The 20 people will be selected from all the entries by a judging panel, which will be looking for the most inspiring stories and people who reflect the borough’s diversity. Lorenzo will carry out oral history interviews with those selected. He will also be looking for volunteers to help him collect the information. An exhibition about the 20 testimonies, featuring recordings, transcripts and a booklet, will be shown at The Gallery in Willesden Green Library Centre in autumn 2011. In summer 2012, during the Games and Paralympics, the voices will be broadcast from solar-powered loudspeakers at sites such as Wembley Arena Square and near Wembley Stadium. “It is an inter-generational project,” said Lorenzo. “And will allow the transmission
of knowledge and heritage between people of different backgrounds and ages.” A resident supporting the project is Paulette Harris-German, who was a sprinter and long-jumper for Neasden High School and also represented Middlesex and Brent. She said: “I’m sure there will be testimonies aplenty. Brent has always has been home to athletic talent; the opportunity to capture this for posterity will be invaluable. Anyone with even a hint of an athletic history should come forward to add to the rich tapestry that will be woven by the project.” She trained with Olympic greats such as Linford Christie and her first pair of running ‘spikes’ were donated to her by a local champion in the mid-1970s when she was 11. “Even today I’m the proud holder of both my school kit and also my Brent kit,” she added. The project is supported by Brent Council and Brent Artists Resource and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The deadline to apply to Testimonies is 15 August 2010. Email Lorenzo at info@brentartistsresource.org.uk stating your name, address and why you feel so passionate about the Games, or call 020 8459 1421.

Let talents flower Wonderful gardening is being put forward for the Brent in Bloom competition this month. Now is the season for gardeners and the green-fingered to take up their trowels and sharpen their secateurs. Brent in Bloom is back. The annual competition, run by Brent Council to applaud amateur gardeners and to raise awareness about our local environment, is open for entries from 1 June with the deadline on 25 June. Anyone can put forward their best gardening whether it is a window box, hanging baskets outside a shop, or displays in a front garden. Brent in Bloom 2010 has seven separate categories: front garden seasonal planting, front garden permanent planting, container planting, business and public premises, shared gardens, school gardens and a neighbourhood award. There will also be an outstanding achievement award from the judges to one excellent gardener.
The neighbourhood category is for small, resident-led groups which are just starting to ‘green up’ their local areas by improving their streets, gardens and open spaces.
“Brent in Bloom is the first stage for the borough to enter two competitions run by the Royal Horticultural Society.” Judging will be in the first two weeks of July and judges will be looking for design, colour and plant quality when giving out their marks. There is a trophy and gift vouchers to be won in each category. Last year NW2 Residents’ Association won the neighbourhood award, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir the business category, and Wembley resident John Philippou was first
in front garden permanent planting. Brent in Bloom is the first stage for the borough to enter two competitions run by the Royal Horticultural Society: London in Bloom and Britain in Bloom. Britain in Bloom is judged over two years with the regional category winners in year one becoming finalists in the national competition the following year. London in Bloom is one of the eighteen regional heats. Last year Brent won a Silver Gilt Award in London in Bloom. This year we want Brent to win a London gold and make the Britain in Bloom finals in 2011. To help, the Brent competition is embracing the society’s theme of local roots to encourage more community involvement in our neighbourhood category. The award ceremony for Brent in Bloom will be held in October.

Concerns for carers
Brent Carers’ Week will be saying thank you to people who look after others by offering them a break, courses and activities in June. Words by ORLA SEDZE.
For many, a baby is a life changing experience, but for Kieran O’Donnell the birth of his youngest son Jack gave his life a new direction. Jack, who is now six, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy soon after birth, meaning he has limited movement in both his arms and legs and uses a standing frame or wheelchair to get around. For Kieran, it meant giving up a high-profile career in recruitment in central London so that he could look after Jack full-time. Kieran and his wife became two of the estimated 20,000 people in Brent who are carers. “I became a carer to Jack when he was a little older and had become quite heavy,” explains Kieran. “We have to lift and carry him a lot, we live in a flat and
Brent Carers’Week to offer advice and support to those who care for young people. This month from June 14-20, Brent Council has helped to organise Brent Carers’Week, offering free classes, trips, walks and talks especially for carers. The activities are free, but places are limited so you must book to attend the events. If necessary, Brent can arrange for someone to care for your friend or family member while you take part in an activity. “I wasn’t aware of the support services that were available and I would encourage carers to seek out this information and come along to carers’ week,” Kieran added. For more information on Brent Carers’ Week contact 020 8937 4300 or to join 1 Voice, visit www.1voicebrent.com

Whoever you’re caring for you want the best for them. At the end of the day I’m Jack’s dad and I will do anything to make sure he has the best in life whether that’s services, support or opportunity.” Having Jack has brought a new focus to Kieran’s life and he recently set up 1 Voice, a parent and carer forum in the borough that works with Brent Council to promote the wellbeing of disabled children, young adults and their families and carers. Amazing
War-Dens In 1937 the Second World War was looming. Hitler’s Luftwaffe had dropped high explosive and fire bombs on civilian areas during the Spanish Civil War. Ernest Trobridge, an architect who lived at Hayland in Kingsbury at the time, turned his thoughts to how local people could be protected from air raids. So, early in 1938 he applied to Wembley Council for permission to build houses in Slough Lane ‘incorporating the WAR-DEN fortified garage’. Though never built, they show another facet of his extraordinary ideas. The plans were for a pair of semi-detached houses, which would be built above and around a reinforced concrete capsule. Normally, this would provide a garage for each house, but in wartime it would be converted into an air-raid shelter for 80 people. Canvas seats, like upright deckchairs, would be lowered on frames from the ceiling. Trobridge’s design had the thickness of concrete – the recommended protection from 250kg bombs – and some unique features. There were two slabs of concrete above the shelter, separated by a bed of packed sand. The sand was held in place by safety valve brickwork, which would have collapsed if the house took a direct hit, cushioning the slab’s descent onto

the roof of the air-raid shelter capsule below. Beneath the floor of the shelter there would be two further rafts of concrete, each separated by shock absorbing foundations. Another feature in the design was a ventilation system. It used the chimney stacks for flue inlets with fans which would deliver fresh air into the shelter, while other flues would take away stale air. This system would have been a life-saver in the case of a gas attack. Trobridge’s plans were eventually approved. He calculated that the extra costs of building the fortified garage could be funded by the homeowners and local people who wanted to use the shelter in time of war paying a yearly rent per seat. It may have been difficulties in arranging finance which stopped these two houses from being built. Trobridge also applied in May 1938 to add a fortified garage to his own home, with a thatched roof on top of the concrete. However, like his earlier plans the 40 person air-raid shelter at Hayland, for his family and neighbours, was never built. To see the designs visit ‘Ernest Trobridge: Visionary of the Suburbs’ at Brent Museum in Willesden Green Library Centre until 19 September, call 020 8937 3600.

The active course
Children taking part in the Brent MEND scheme, pictures by Isabelle Plasschaert.
Fun exercise classes, recipe tasting and a supermarket tour are among the activities young people and their families can enjoy on the Brent MEND programme which aims to help overweight and obese children. Local youngsters aged between seven and ten, and their families, are now wanted for a free ten-week course, starting on 19 July, and future programmes. The scheme, funded by Brent Council, NHS Brent and the Big Lottery Fund, aims to get the whole family making healthier choices. Parents are offered support and advice on everything from bullying to diet and personal development at the two-hour sessions which are run twice a week by MEND trained nutritionists, sports coaches and other health professionals. Participating families get fruit and vegetable vouchers, funded by ASDA, to help make healthier choices more affordable. Cynthia Chellar and her seven-yearold daughter, Jade Harris, have made big changes to their eating habits since completing the course. “Shopping takes ages now because we like to read the labels on food together,” said Cynthia. “Jade is very keen to make sure she gets

She loved the exercise part of the programme. At first she would be red-faced when she’d finished but by the end of ten weeks she was skipping through the exercises.” Brent Council’s Child Health Support Officer, Marimba Cameron, helps coordinate the MEND programme in the borough. She said: “Rather than telling families what to do, the course lets them make informed choices about their lifestyles and gives them the confidence to make improvements to their diet, fitness levels and overall health.” Families receive continued support to help them sustain the changes they have made during the ten-week programme. Activities include swimming lessons, a term’s attendance at SportsCoach, leisure centre visits, and healthy cooking workshops. If you live in Brent and have children aged seven to ten who could benefit, you might be eligible; however, you need to commit to a two-hour session twice a week and a parent or carer must accompany each child. Places are first come, first served. Call Marimba on 020 8937 3055 email her marimba.cameron@brent.gov.uk or visit www.mendprogramme.org for more. JUNE 2010
