I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all Brent residents a very merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. As we head into the festive period, it’s important to spare some time to think about the less fortunate people in our community. Christmas will be a difficult time for many families this year. We all have a responsibility to help others whenever we are able. We must remember that our success is not sustainable unless our neighbours succeed too. And as we all know, giving is much more rewarding than receiving! So please do help out where you can over Christmas – whether that’s by stopping for a chat, popping in to see an elderly neighbour, spending time at a homeless shelter or helping in other ways. This edition looks at some of the things the council is doing to help people get into work and support local businesses. They’re two of our key goals towards making Brent a fairer place, fighting for jobs and growth, and strengthening our sense of community. Community can make all the difference at a time like this. Cllr Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council.

Brent Council is helping schools to cut carbon dioxide emissions by launching one of the first local authority-hosted websites to help schools embrace a low carbon future. The website, available to every Brent school, offers information about energy efficiency and climate change issues through blogs, videos and resources and guides to download. The Brent Low Carbon Schools website is part of the local authority’s campaign,

supported by the Brent Climate Change Strategy, to encourage schools to reduce their carbon emissions significantly. In 2011/12, schools in the borough (excluding academy schools) emitted around 16,070 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which accounted for more than 50 per cent of the local authority’s emissions. Brent schools have a target of reducing their total carbon dioxide emissions by 25 per cent by 2014.

Brent ready for winter weather’s return Brent Council is ready to help keep the borough moving if freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall affect northwest London this winter. The authority is on standby and has already devised plans that aim to ensure that the major road network, 95 per cent of bus routes, high roads, town centre streets and steep hills stay open. The council has access to around 2,400 tonnes of grit, also known

as rock salt, and more than 300 yellow grit bins will be installed so residents can grit icy or hazardous pavements themselves when required. The council has also published guidance about where and how the grit should be used properly – the grit must be used to clear pavements and public roads only – not private property such as a driveway or paths. www.brent.gov.uk/winter

Santa’s sprinters If you see Father Christmas running through Gladstone Park on a Saturday morning over the next couple of weeks, it doesn’t mean you’ve been enjoying too much of the Christmas spirit. It’s probably just participants of Brent’s Gladstone ‘parkrun’ out for a festive fancy dress jog. Willesden Green resident Glen Turner set up the free five kilometre event which takes place in Gladstone Park every Saturday morning all year round. Participants wore horrific outfits to mark Halloween and will get into the seasonal swing of things by donning Santa hats and costumes at their run on December 22. The fancy dress fun is only one of the things that makes the global phenomenon of parkrun different from many other organised runs. Participants are of all ages and abilities, including wheelchair users and people running with their dogs. And everyone is invited to go for a coffee at the park cafe afterwards.

Event director Glen said: “It’s a free, timed event, run by volunteers, fun and informal. You get some runners aiming to get a personal best and people who run some of the way, walk for a bit, then run again. “There are people who never run but volunteer, cheering people on. People develop an affinity with their parkrun, develop a whole new set of mates out of it, parkrun is not a race – it's a run where you make friends.” Glen’s parents, who were both keen runners, got him into running when he was six. Since then the UNISON worker has taken part in triathlons and ultramarathons – sometimes covering distances of 60 or 70 miles – all over the UK and the world.

He said: “Running is great on so many levels. The health and fitness benefits are significant, it makes you a much more positive person and there is an enormous community out there. I’ve made some great friends through running.” Over 400 people have signed up to the Brent event since Glen set it up in July, with the support of Brent Council and sponsors. He said: “I always wanted to have my own parkrun and when I realised Brent didn’t have one, it was a fantastic opportunity. “It doesn’t matter what your level is, parkrun is for everyone – even chubby fellows with beards, dressed in red!”

Watch out Disney, step aside Marvel, a group of looked after Brent children have just made a new cartoon and comic book called We Care all about their experiences of being fostered.

“I thought it was such a great idea to have kids explaining exactly what it’s like going into care.”

10

THE BRENT MAGAZINE

What’s more We Care has already wowed a Tricycle Cinema audience at its world premiere last month, which was hosted by resident and celebrity brainbox Sean Wallace. The animated film is now set for a special screening at the British Film Institute (BFI) in the New Year. The groundbreaking DVD, which features the children’s voices and their specially created superhero, ‘Protector’, is part of an information pack. It contains a comic book guide and personal dairy, that’ll be given to Brent children who are about to go into foster care or a children’s home. We Care’s young creators, who range in age from seven to 13years-old, worked with volunteers, project coordinator Shirley Ricketts (pictured) and the production company Latimer Creative all through the summer to bring their story ideas to life.

DECEMBER 2012 / JANUARY 2013

Footage from these weekend work sessions – two of which took place at the Learning Zone in Wembley Stadium – has been made into a special, ‘Making of We Care’ DVD for each child to keep as a memento of their time working on the project. When 23-year-old volunteer Soroush Shakeri (pictured) heard about We Care he couldn’t wait to get involved and immediately offered to help the children bring the cartoon to the big screen. Soroush, who grew up in care, has just graduated from the University of West London with a Degree in Music Technology and now has ambitions to become a teacher or youth worker. At We Care’s joyful Tricycle premiere he told TBM a bit more about his involvement in the ground-breaking production.

“My social worker first told me about the project and I thought it was such a great idea to have kids explaining exactly what it’s like going into care because it can be a scary experience. I also thought it would be a great opportunity for me personally to do some volunteering work that would be really rewarding and help me in the direction of career I’m taking. “Shirley then contacted me and told me more about what she wanted me to do, which was basically to make sure the kids concentrated on the tasks they were given and get them to participate in all the activities. I had to encourage them to be creative and speak up with their ideas of how they wanted the cartoon to go.

“It’s been a great experience working with these kids; helping them to stay focused on their tasks and encouraging them to give us ideas about what they wanted to see in the cartoon. “I didn’t go into care until I was a teenager so it was really interesting talking to the children about what they’ve been through. They’ve taught me a lot about what it’s like being in care from an early age and I’m sure it’s going to be really valuable to other kids going through the same thing.” Also at We Care’s exclusive screening was Brent’s Lead Member for Children and Families, Cllr Mary Arnold who was thrilled with the finished product:

“Congratulations and a huge thank you to all of the children who took part in this project and, by using their own experience, managed to produce this exemplary film. “Congratulations to Latimer Creative too. We Care really is a triumph and I am convinced it will achieve the children's objective and help make life a little easier for the hundreds of other children in Brent who face the daunting prospect of going into care.” Above, below and left: Animated characters from the film and comic. Healthy living tastes sweet Miguel Moura got the shock of his life when his GP gave him the results of his health check. “When he said I was pre-diabetic, I went crazy,” explained 47 year old Miguel. “He said that if I didn’t change my lifestyle, in four or five years I would have diabetes. It really scared me.” Caused by high blood sugar, diabetes results in preventable complications such as heart disease and blindness and can, ultimately, lead to an early death. In 2010, the father of two was a prime candidate. He weighed 105kgs (16.5 stone), smoked, took little exercise and ate far too much. A typical breakfast was four slices of toast with butter and jam and three bananas. He was ‘addicted to crisps.’ Mr Moura said: “I knew salad was healthy, so I would have two steaks, a big pile of chips and salad, and think that was good.” He had already begun losing weight when his GP referred him to a unique scheme run in partnership by NHS Brent, Ealing Hospital – Community Services Brent, local GPs and Brent Council.

Over six months, participants in the Intensive Lifestyle Intervention (ILI) have regular nutrition education sessions with dieticians to learn about healthy eating. They also take part in supervised exercise sessions at Vale Farm and Bridge Park. Today, Mr Moura weighs around 80kg (12 stone 8lbs), has stopped smoking, runs regularly and eats a much healthier diet. He said: “I learned a lot, the healthy way to eat, how to keep your weight good and have a balance. I feel well, really well.” Over 260 pre-diabetics have taken part in the ILI since it started last year. A third are no-longer pre-diabetic and two thirds show an improvement in blood sugar levels.

Top tips for healthy living

• make sure you have three regular meals every day – starting with breakfast

• have your ‘five plus a day’ – two fruits and at least three vegetables

• limit sugary drinks – make water your first choice

• fancy something sweet? Try a lowfat yogurt, fresh fruit or a small portion of dried fruit

• 30 minutes moderate exercise five times a week

• try the council’s affordable exercise programmes – gentle aerobics, healthy walks or football sessions. www.brent.gov.uk/sports

Rocky start for some dogs We’re working with the Mayhew Animal Home on a simple but ingenious scheme that benefits dogs and their two legged friends, and helps us cut the cost of transporting abandoned dogs to kennels outside Brent.

The dog fostering programme allows people to take unwanted dogs into their homes short term until they are permanently adopted by new owners. The programme’s so effective because it not only frees up valuable space at the Mayhew – for the growing number of abandoned animals – it also allows people the chance to experience the joys of having a dog with none of the associated hassles of being a full time pet owner. Susannah Britcher from Wembley is foster ‘mother’ to Rocky, a bright and bouncy Lurcher puppy who was recently rescued by the Mayhew after being abandoned in a park. “I’ve fostered 25 to 30 dogs, all different shapes and sizes, young and old and it’s been a wonderful experience. When my own dog died and my son went off to university I really wanted another dog but I didn’t want the commitment of owning a pet. “I was already a fan of the Mayhew; my old dog came from there, so that’s how I heard about fostering. “It’s easy to sign up and Mayhew are really supportive. They provide a vet and help you if you have any worries about the dog’s health or behavioural issues. They give you training sessions too which are great. When I started out I thought I knew all about dogs, since doing the training I now realise I knew nothing.” Abandoned dogs are a real problem for council’s across the country, as Brent’s pest control and animal welfare manager Craig Johnstone explains: “Every year we see more and more abandoned dogs and often they’re abused or neglected. Dealing with them is not just heartbreaking, it’s also costly. Last year the council spent £14,000 keeping unwanted dogs in kennels outside Brent. “We’re known as a nation of dog lovers but seeing so many strays, especially at this time of year, I sometimes think the opposite’s true. People like Susannah restore my faith a bit but we desperately need more animal lovers to give temporary homes to unwanted dogs. Please, think twice about buying a pet as a gift this Christmas.” To find out more about fostering a dog, visit www.themayhew.org.uk or telephone 020 8969 0178.

Shops on Queens Parade

The shop windows on Willesden High Road have rarely looked more inviting. And with the pop up shops nestled on Queens Parade flourishing since their launch in 2011 – as part of the council’s regeneration plans for the high road – you can find goodies that are handmade, homemade or heartfelt. The stores, which in November won Brent Council the Regeneration and Renewal National Award for boosting High St vitality, sell anything from vintage clothing to handmade cakes and owners have been getting creative with their window displays too. The shops have also recently been joined by pop up venture Electric House located on Willesden Lane – offering locals an exciting new community space. Local artists will display their work in the building until the end of January, while local shop owners can attend free workshops aimed at helping them design creative and exciting window displays. Visitors to Willesden can vote for their favourite window display by visiting Electric House until 20 December with the winning shop being announced on 21 December. It’s hoped the new venture will help to further encourage shoppers back to the area, while supporting local businesses.

To support the different regeneration projects, the Willesden Green Team was recently launched; a group of local residents, businesses and organisations with a passion for improving the area. As well as working to tidy up and brighten the area, the volunteers have secured ‘Town Team Partner’ status. This means they will be given support from the government to improve the local environment and services, while creating new business and employment opportunities. Louise Wadsworth, Willesden Green Team’s chairperson, said: “We’re working hard to try and bring more business here. “It’s great to see the shops looking so festive. People have really put in the effort. I hope people come down and see what Willesden has to offer. “We believe small businesses are the starting point for regeneration and it’s the variety of small independent traders that gives Willesden Green its appeal.” Anyone who lives, works or owns property in Willesden can join the team. ALL IN Aday’s

work

Excellence in the workplace Brent hosted its annual Staff Achievement Awards in December, recognising the individuals and teams who have been nominated for giving excellent public service. The process started back in July when nominations were opened. Nominations came in from members of the public wishing to recognise council officers and teams who make a difference to their community. Council staff also nominated teams and colleagues who they felt strive to consistently deliver excellent services. Interim Chief Executive Christine Gilbert said: “These awards are an opportunity to celebrate the passion and commitment that many staff at Brent show in going the extra mile to serve local people. “I should like to give particular congratulations to the Sports Development Team, our Team of the Year. They have established strong and creative partnerships, both locally and nationally, which are bringing huge benefits to Brent residents.”

Team of the Year Sports Development Team The judging panel felt that this team show commitment, dedication and belief in the work they are doing and that they truly want the residents of Brent to benefit from the work they do. They have successfully secured funding and delivered many different projects that hugely benefit Brent. These include: • getting people on their bikes with a cycling project • London Youth Games – a mini Olympics for young people with schools and sports clubs • 2012 taster sessions of Olympic and Paralympic sports.

Left to right: Sarah Hawken, Richard Collinson, Jo Creary, Cheyenne Green.

The team are often cited as an example of good practice by other authorities and are highly regarded in Brent and the wider sporting community. This year has seen a legacy of sporting achievements including: • affordable sports opportunities for children and young people such as archery, fencing, horse riding, basketball and more • coaching bursary providing up to 75 per cent off sports qualifications from level one to three • a range of opportunities for adults such as 50+ tennis and aerobics, antenatal and postnatal yoga, healthy walks and more. www.brent.gov.uk/sports
