Get active this summer As I leave Brent Civic Centre in the evening, it lifts my spirits to know there is a decent chunk of the day left to do something outside. A lot of us spend most of our day indoors, often in an office, hunched over a computer. Being outdoors and doing something active is good for the mind and the body. In Brent, most of us are not active enough. National guidelines recommend three lots of physical activity a week, each lasting 30 minutes. Yet in Brent, only around a third of adults take part in more than 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every week. This, combined with poor eating habits, means we have high obesity levels. Obesity is a real problem as it often leads to dangerous health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. So instead of sitting at home why not use this summer to get involved in some of the outdoor (and indoor) activities on offer locally? From tennis to outdoor yoga, from free swimming to group walks in our beautiful parks, from guided cycle rides to outdoor gyms, there really is something to suit every age and ability. Most of the activities are free, which is an added bonus. Just go to the centre pages for our summer guide. If you can get to the recommended three lots of 30 minutes of ‘moderate intensity’ physical activity per week you’ll be doing yourself at lot of good – and you might get to discover some of the borough’s hidden gems at the same time. Be a record breaker this summer! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is Record Breakers, allowing children to discover an amazing selection of real-life achievements and world records. Children aged 4 to 12 can take part by registering at their Brent library from Wednesday 1 July. All children are encouraged to read six books of their choice for a chance to receive stickers, a medal and a certificate. Brent Libraries is also teaming up with other library services across the UK to set a world record for the most pledges received for a reading campaign. People of all ages can go to Wembley Library on Saturday 11 July (10.30am-4pm) and complete a simple pledge card which will count towards the world record attempt. www.brent.gov.uk/libraries
Save money on parking Drivers in Brent are embracing the benefits of cashless parking with a third of all drivers now opting to book their parking space using a mobile phone, rather than putting coins in a pay and display machine. More motorists are registering every day. If you download the app, or register with the RingGo system by phone, you never again have to worry about finding the nearest pay machine or rummage around looking for the right change. An additional benefit is the option to extend your parking
time remotely, avoiding having to rush back to the meter to put more money in before your time expires. Drivers using mobile phones can also save up to 50p every time they park, compared to paying by cash. www.brent.gov.uk/parking

Brent Parent Carer Forum (BPCF) is the council’s new official independent support group for families of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The group works with the local authority to influence how services for SEND are planned and delivered locally. It is free to join and welcomes all parents and carers of children and young people with SEND up to the age of 25. For more information email brentpcf@gmail.com, call 07956 499 300, or visit www.brent.gov.uk/sendias.
Bomb in Wembley Park An unexploded WWII bomb forced the evacuation of homes, businesses and Brent Civic Centre last month. Hundreds of residents inside a 400-metre exclusion zone spent the night with friends or family or at a council-organised rest centre. Swift action meant that council services ran smoothly throughout the incident. Bomb disposal experts made safe and removed the 70-year-old 50kg bomb within 24 hours, meaning that events planned over the Bank Holiday weekend, including football play-off finals and ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, could go ahead.

Healthier takeaways Takeaway outlets in Brent are being encouraged to consider how they prepare and cook food to support customers to eat healthier. Brent residents have high rates of obesity and type II diabetes; eating foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar contributes to these conditions. To achieve the Healthier Catering Commitment (HCC) award, takeaways need to use healthier oils such as rapeseed or corn oil, as well as limiting salt, promoting water and low sugar drinks, and offering salads. Ten takeaways in Brent have already been awarded the HCC, of which six are Sam’s Chicken, which has introduced alternatives to chips such as wraps and rice. For more information, visit www.brent. gov.uk/healthyliving.
Get on your bike Look out for a sizzling calendar of cycling events across the borough this summer. From cycle training, to ‘try out’ events, there is something for everyone – from the complete beginner to the more experienced cyclist. Events are free. Go to www.brent.gov. uk/cycling to check out what’s on. Cycling is great for short journeys, often being quicker than public transport. And it’s also a free mode of transport! Meanwhile, the Cycle Strategy Consultation is now open for you to tell us what you think of cycling in Brent. You can read the strategy and comment at www.brent-consult.objective. co.uk/portal until Sunday 12 July.

As The Brent Magazine went to print, building work on the site of the old Willesden Green Library Centre was nearing completion and The Library at Willesden Green is expected to open its doors to the public later this summer. Not only will it have a state of the art library but it will also house the Brent Museum and Archives plus gallery space, performance space and self-service Brent Customer Services portals. There will also be a lively programme of events and activities including stories and craft fun for children, baby and toddler dance sessions, theatrical performances for adults and children, screenings and exhibitions. Read more about the new building and check for the opening date at: www.brent.gov.uk/lwg
Health bosses grilled on NHS Local NHS bosses were questioned by health and legal experts on the future of NHS services in west London last month as part of an independent commission’s investigation into the Shaping a Healthier Future (SAHF) programme. Set up by Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, and Hounslow councils, the commission concluded eight weeks of examining the
impact and implications of the programme. The commission, chaired by Michael Mansfield QC, is looking into plans to reduce nine local hospitals to five major hospitals. The four remaining hospitals would either be closed or classified as local hospitals without full A&E units. The Commission is due to publish their findings in July.
Yasmin’s East London debut A 12-year-old girl from Kingsbury took part in an interactive event last month to raise awareness about autism, Asperger’s and how our minds work. Yasmin Latif contributed poetry to How Am I Wired? at Old Street Station which featured exhibitions, experiments and displays to show the different ways in which people’s brains function. The 12-year-old, who has Asperger’s, has previously been involved with Brent Outreach Autism Team (BOAT) and has displayed her poetry at Ealing Road Library, Wembley. Tackling exploitation of workers
Brent
In the coming weeks, a consultation will take place to consider introducing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to ban the practice of picking up workers from Brent’s streets for casual cash-in-hand labour. Casual workers hired in this way often get paid less than the minimum wage and may not be protected by health and safety at work rules. The consultation would look at whether a proposed PSPO could be used to help
stop workers congregating in places like Honeypot Lane, Chichele Road and Cricklewood Broadway. If a PSPO is introduced, small businesses or individuals caught picking up casual workers would face an instant £75 fixed penalty fine or possible criminal prosecution. The enforcement of a PSPO in the borough would be done in partnership by the police and Brent Council. www.brent.gov.uk/pspo
needs you A thousand new volunteers will be recruited in Brent this year as part of a drive to enable local people to develop their skills and experiences, while using their existing talents to benefit local neighbourhoods. The council has awarded a contract to Groundwork London to match volunteers to placements with local groups. The news comes after 41 per cent of respondents to the Borough Plan consultation said that they wanted to contribute to their local communities through volunteering. If you would like to volunteer to develop your skills, or to use your experience to benefit other residents, email enquiry@ volunteeringbrent.org.uk.
Have your say on youth service Young people in Brent are being given the chance to have their say on the planning and delivering of youth services in the borough. A consultation will take place on radical changes to youth services, including establishing a Young Brent Foundation (YBF) to set and lead the vision for local youth services as well as providing increased support for voluntary groups. Set up as a charitable body, YBF would have the opportunity to access funding for planning of youth services, which the council cannot. For more information, visit www.brent. gov.uk/youthserviceconsultation
Countdown to results Pupils who have been working hard this summer sitting exams will soon begin the countdown to the day when the results for their efforts are known. The announcement of exam results for students will come after a lot of hard work and preparation by pupils and teachers at sixth-forms and colleges across the borough. Pupils sitting their A-Levels will find out the results on Thursday 13 August and those who have been sitting their GCSEs will be told their results a week later on Thursday 20 August. There are many other exams taking place including NVQs, Baccalaureate and BTEC exams so keep up with the latest at www.brent.gov.uk
World Cup comes to Wembley The countdown is on with just one hundred days (as of Wednesday 10 June) to go before the Rugby World Cup 2015 kicks off. Wembley will host two matches: New Zealand v Argentina on Sunday 20 September and Ireland v Romania on Sunday 27 September. As part of the celebrations, the Web Ellis Cup, will tour Scotland, Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland, Wales and England, eventually ‘scrumming’ to Brent on Saturday 12 September, which means you can have your photo taken with rugby’s greatest prize. Details of the trophy tour can be found at rugbyworldcup.com/trophy-tour.

Patrick ‘steels’ the carnival show An amazing spectacle of sights and sounds takes to the streets of west London every August Bank Holiday at the Notting Hill Carnival – and it wouldn’t be the same without one inspirational man “Volunteering... is a way you can say thank you” - Patrick McKay
A collaboration of African-American music, dance and food draws thousands of people every year to enjoy and take part in the carnival. And community projects and volunteers from Brent play their part in its success. One particularly passionate volunteer is Patrick McKay, leader of St. Michael’s Youth Project based in Stonebridge – with the group’s steel orchestra again playing at Notting Hill this August. Patrick said: “Since 1996, myself and others have been teaching young people how to play the steel drums, from the ages of five all the way through to twenty-five. “It is hugely rewarding. As a group, we’ve been volunteering to play at the carnival now for the past seven years, helping to deliver the diverse range of music which makes Carnival great. “It is a huge annual event and we cater for everyone with what we play. It is our way of sharing our love for the community.” As well as teaching the young people involved with the project how to play, Patrick aims to teach a deeper message through his work, which is to recognise the love and the support the community offers to help everyone achieve. Patrick said: “Volunteering in the community, however you do it, is a way you can say thank you for the things that you have benefitted from and give back to others to help them do the same. “Saying thank you is what everyone here at the St. Michael and All Angels Steel Orchestra aims to do at every carnival. We’ll be looking to do the same again this year and deliver a spectacle for everyone to enjoy.” To get involved with or find out more about the band’s amazing work, go to www.brent.gov.uk/stmichaelsyouth project. When it opened in August 1995, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden made headlines around the world. At the time, it was the largest mandir (Hindu temple) outside India. “The last twenty years have just flown by, and we ‘ve been overwhelmed by the postive response and support from everyone,” explains Daksha Parekh, a volunteer at the mandir, one of the thousands who regularly help out there. The idea of volunteering is at the very heart of the temple. When it was being built in the 1990s, volunteers gave up their free weekends and evenings to polish the crafted Italian and Indian marble before it was laid in place. Fast forward twenty years and another team of volunteers has just undertaken six months of re-polishing to make sure the limestone and marble is pristine again in time for the anniversary
events. The temple plays a huge part in community life and, in 2009, was recognised with a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. One of the main anniversary events is the Swaminarayan School Summer Fair on the weekend of Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June. Open to everyone, it will feature stage performances, arts and crafts stalls and face-painting for the youngest visitors. As well as the programme of activities, visitors on the day can look back at the twenty-year history of the temple in their interactive exhibition; free guided tours of the buildings are also being put on. “There’ll be a huge buzz on the day and there’s nothing like the temple when it’s full of people,” says Daksha.Another volunteer, Devan, told The Brent Magazine:“A huge draw on the weekend will be the amount of authentic Indian cuisine on offer. We’ll have proper Indian street food – the sort of wonderful food you won’t find in your average Indian restaurant!”
Reaching out to the wider, non-Hindu community is an important priority for Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (known as BAPS), the spiritual organisation that runs the temple. At the end of May, 650 of the temple’s ‘neighbours’ were invited to a special dinner and tour. Devan explains: “We host a huge range of events here for everyone, from all of Brent’s communities, including
Has it really been 20 years? 10

Open House, health screenings, Earth Hour, interfaith events, InternationalWomen’s Day events and lectures on well-being.” Daksha adds that the temple sparks off a great deal of curiosity: “We often spot people parking their cars outside the gates just to take a picture of our buildings. And if you’ve ever wanted to come in, then please do. You’re more than welcome!” Details of the Summer Fair can be found online at www.tssuk.org

A service worth picking From offering advice on benefits to resolving housing problems, a new advice service is helping vulnerable people to live independently in the community Sadly, not everyone has someone they can turn to when it comes to getting advice and support. That’s why a new advice service known as BA4SIL – Brent Advice Service 4 Independent Lives (pronounced ‘Basil’) – was set up last year for those in the borough who may need it the most. The service is for people over 65 years old and disabled people over 18 years old and is funded by Brent Council and run jointly by two charities Age UK Brent and Brent Mencap, with Age UK Brent leading. It helps people online through its dedicated website, which is simple-to-use and in Easy Read for anyone with learning disabilities. It offers information on health, community events, housing, transport, community care, money advice, welfare benefits, employment, rights and training opportunities. The service also has an advice phone line and drop-in service, and appointments for more complex enquiries. Leader of Brent Council, Cllr Muhammed Butt launched the service last year and it
works closely with other organisations such as Middlesex Association for the Blind, Brent Citizens Advice Bureau, Royal Association for the Deaf and Ashford Place. “We’re the only dedicated information and advice service in Brent for older people or those who have physical and learning disabilities or have poor mental health,” explains BAS4IL Manager Maxcine Akinsowon. “We’re making a real difference to people who need support, promoting choice, and enabling them to live independently in the community.” The service has a team of experienced advisers, and many volunteers, who work as trainee advisers or advice navigators to signpost callers to different types of services available within the organisation, such as advocacy, or to another agency. “We’re helping many people every month; it can be a small matter, but at other times we’ve helped homeless people get into sheltered accommodation, or helped a couple get their benefit entitlements so that they no
longer needed to use a food bank,” added Maxcine. “The advisers understand how confusing making applications for benefits or housing can be for some people.” An IT drop-in service is also run three days a week: “The reality is that some benefits – such as housing benefit – now have to be applied for online. That’s why we want to make sure older and disabled people are not left behind and can use digital services and computers,” says Maxcine. The service also provides a back-to-work programme for those over 50 who want to get back into work.

Winning in Wembley There’s a lot to celebrate in Wembley right now. Our biggest growth area has been officially designated as a ‘Housing Zone’ by the Greater London Authority and the area has also been awarded more than half a million pounds to improve the local high streets.
Dorinda from Dorinda Millinery Studio, Wembley Triangle
What is a Housing Zone?
What is the High Street Fund?
The Housing Zone status means that we have £8 million to go towards creating around 700 new homes and jobs inWembley. This money will be used to bring forward stalled development sites in the area, with the new homes and jobs being delivered by 2021.Alongside this development, we expect around 2,400 additional homes to be created, of which a significant number will be affordable. The council is also planning for the delivery of new school places, health facilities, community space and improved junctions and bus services.
Businesses and residents inWembley will see a range of activities and improvements on their local high streets after the council won more than half a million pounds from the Greater London Authority’s High Street Fund. The money will go towards providing business support, shop-front and building improvements, bringing empty shops back into use and holding celebratory events in Wembley Park Drive,WembleyTriangle, Wembley Central and Ealing Road. The cash will also support a new digital high street initiative, which aims to help businesses
A vision of how Wembley could look in the future
improve their online visibility by providing digital platforms, advice and guidance. Dorinda, the owner of Dorinda Millinery studio inWembley toldThe Brent Magazine: “I’m delighted that Brent has secured this funding to be spent onWembley’s high streets. I really feel that we businesses need all the help we can get to help us thrive and survive in these changing times. As a small business, times are increasingly tough but this funding has come at a great time. It’ll help attract more people to the high streets and showcase all the fantastic wares that Wembley has to offer.”

Happy 50th anniversary, Brent ! April 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the creation of the 32 London boroughs: 12 inner London and 20 outer London. One of these boroughs was Brent. Brent Council has influenced many lives over the past 50 years by shaping local neighbourhoods, investing in social housing and local transport, delivering public and environmental health services, and supporting children’s education. The images on these pages from Brent Museum and Archives document Brent’s journey.

Beware the fatberg! ‘Bin It – Don’t Block It’ is a campaign to spread the word among Brent residents and businesses about the negative effects of disposing fats, oils, grease and other items down our sinks and drains.
Thames Water says that in the last five years more than 600 homes in Brent have been flooded with raw sewage because of so-called ‘fatbergs’. They told The Brent Magazine: “The majority of blockages are caused by sewer abuse. This is when things like cooking fat, sanitary products and wet wipes are wrongly put down toilets and drains, often causing misery for thousands of people because they block sewers, leading in some cases to waste backing up into people’s homes.” The blockages happen because your toilet, shower, bath, sink and washing machine all
empty out through just one single pipe before it gets to the sewer in the road. This pipe is only around 10cm wide – just big enough for a cricket ball – and really easy to block. Blocked drainage and sewer systems result in potentially harmful sewage and waste water overflowing above ground onto streets and properties. This not only poses a health risk to residents but is also costly to fix. There are a number of legal requirements in place to help prevent fat, oil and grease entering drains and sewers and failure to follow these can lead to enforcement action.
COMMON SOURCES OF FATS, OILS AND GREASE THAT CAUSE FATBERGS
HOW TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF GREASE AND FAT THAT GOES DOWN THE DRAIN
✘ Gravy and sauces
• Scrape grease and food scraps into a can or food waste bin for disposal
✘ Oil from fried foods
• Use strainers in sinks and dispose of the collected food waste in the correct bins
✘ Butter, ice cream and other dairy products
• Don’t rely on detergents to dissolve grease as this can cause problems in the drains
✘ Mayonnaise and salad dressings
• Dispose of large amounts of oil at: Reuse and Recycling Centre, Abbey Road, NW10 7TJ
Natalie North, Brent’s Environmental Health Officer
WHAT NOT TO PUT DOWN THE DRAIN
✘ Never pour grease or oil down the sink, drains or toilets
✘ Don’t put food scrapings into the sink ✘ Don’t pour boiling hot water down the sink to try to dissolve fat grease

Recycling – we’ve got it sorted Have you ever wondered how your household waste is recycled? Here’s how it happens. The moment you drop newspapers, cardboard, cans and glass bottles (or anything else you can recycle) inside your blue-top bin their recycling journey starts. On your collection day Brent’s collection teams pick up your bin and empty the contents into the back of the recycling truck. Some of you may have noticed a change to your collections.“We’ve invested recently in a new
fleet of trucks for recycling and due to fewer vehicles now on the road, the total carbon emissions produced is lower and therefore better for the environment,” explains Pawel Wieczorek,Veolia’s Collections Manager. “You may have spotted that the collection teams now empty your blue-top bin and food waste containers bin into the same vehicle, every week. Don’t worry! The food waste is
going into a completely separate compartment in the vehicle and will be recycled separately. We appreciate all the effort you have made to recycle”. The recyclable waste is taken to Brent’s depot at Marsh Road in Alperton. It is then taken to Veolia’s state-of-the-art facility in south London, where all items are then separated so they can be turned into high-quality recycled products.
HERE’S HOW THE PROCESS WORKS IN FOUR SIMPLE STEPS
1
Collection teams now empty your blue-top bin and food waste containers bin into the same vehicle.
2
Recyclable waste is unloaded from the vehicles and placed onto a moving belt.
3 4
Once separated, the materials are sent to different companies to create new products such as glass bottles, newspapers and cardboard which you buy, use and put in your blue-top bin. Then the journey starts again …
Machinery separates glass, steel, cans, paper, cartons and plastics.
Brent’s recycling rate 2014/15 – 36% Brent recycled 35,333 tonnes of waste in 2014-15 including garden waste
