TED THEATRE | PROJECT BOOK DBR | DESIGN BUILD RESEARCH SPRING 2014
MGA
INTRODUCTION PROJECT TED
To build renewable stories with renewable materials is an important part of the future of design. This year’s DBR project was designed and built in the spirit – and infinite possibilities – of a renewable process. A group of 23 architecture and interior design students from the University of British Columbia, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and British Columbia Institute of Technology spent 8 weeks designing and building the TED Community Theatre Stage. Their concept was to build 400 planter boxes with donated wood from BC forests. The planter boxes were easily assembled as building blocks for the stage and backdrop. After TED 2014, they were donated to school programs and non-profits in Vancouver to encourage the growing of plants and the sharing of ideas. Each planter has a TED talk quote, which, when spread throughout our community, will literally become the ‘ideas worth spreading,’ connecting our communities back to the incredible talks that have taken place over the past 30 years. Some planters were filled with saplings from BC forests. The GPS coordinates of these saplings are tracked by foresters, to ensure that the sourced pine cones are returned back as offsprings to their origin. Some planters held flowering plants from our region to decorate the stage with warmth and colour. The flowers show us how the stage will be used after the conference as planter boxes, and as a source of learning and growing in our communities. The story of wood from source to replenishment and long-term carbon sequestration is worth telling. We are privileged to work with the incredible materials grown by the sun; it only takes 3 seconds to rebuild this stage in North America. The TED Community Theatre Stage is a collaboration of material, financial and intellectual resources, with wood donated by Interfor, and the class funded by FII (Forestry Innovation Investment). The stage weaves a beautiful experience for TEDsters through design, and provides a legacy use of ‘ideas worth spreading’.

... Working on the TED Theatre design build project has been a valuable and inspirational learning experience. It has also been a memorable journey; working with wood, learning essential skills and validating the value in designing experiences that provide a positive connection and sustainable contribution not only to the built environment but with the communities in which we live in. I am truly grateful for having the opportunity to collaborate with the exceptionally talented students on this project and work under the leadership of Michael Green along with everyone at MGA.

DBR STORY + WHAT WE DO
Design Build Research (DBR) is a registered non-profit organization facilitated by MGA. It is independent from academic institutions that provides handson design experience for students, recent grads and retired architects from architecture and interior design. DBR gives a full hands-on experience in the reciprocal process of design and construction: challenges of managing clients, real site conditions, weather, local jurisdiction, tight timelines, budget and regional adaptability of their designs. By working in teams, we test the ability of students to work collaboratively and develop leadership skills to help realize the built project. Leadership, project management, design and practical building knowledge are all requirements of successful practicing designers; and therefore, our on-going goals. Good buildings grow the designer, and good design grows our society. DBR explores other aspects of how design influences our society, such as: -
Social entrepreneurship Community engagement Creative activism Leadership skills Working as a team Getting your hands dirty Learning about the tools Design as a tool for change Kick starter as a tool to promote ideas

We are a multidiscipline practice with a strong interiors team, landscape designers, graphics and wayfinding designers and architects. Our goal is to deliver inviting buildings that are a pleasure to play, train, learn, work, or live in. We aim to contribute to community through excellence in design and innovation. Michael and the MGA team have won national and international design awards for their work in a range of scales -- from tiny retail interiors to multi-phase airport complexes. Our team members are exceptionally talented, passionate and as diverse as our projects. Our collective experience shows we are capable of delivering practical yet unique design solutions for complex building types that integrate seamlessly with existing buildings and landscape.
MGA + SUSTAINABILITY
MGA & THE ENVIRONMENT Because we can do more together than we can alone, MGA has partnered with 1% For The Planet, an organization that builds, supports and activates an alliance of businesses committed to creating a healthy planet. Because the practice of architecture and building has enormous impact on the consumption of energy and material resources, we think it is fitting that we donate 1% of our revenues to organizations helping to conserve and protect our planet. To date, 1% For The Planet has initiated over $50 million in environmental giving. We encourage you to find out more at onepercentfortheplanet.org. We strive to be leaders in our community through our work, research and personal choices. Our peers have recognized us for these efforts, particularly with respect to our work with innovative wood structures. Regardless of structural systems, or green building rating systems, we strive to make the best choices for the environment in our work.
“Their work may well change the nature of construction in much of the United States and Canada ….. Green and structural Engineer Eric Karsh of Equilibrium Consulting may be planting the seeds of a construction revolution.” TREEHUGGER - 9 March 2012
Today we consult and advise on green building standards with a host of global organizations and countries. We are committed to sharing our ideas and solutions with our peers and teach when we can. We want to design your project but if, in the end, you choose another group, we will be behind them providing the education necessary to help them make the best choices for the planet. We feel good about sharing when it comes to the environment.

THE CHALLENGE ABOUT TED TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a global non-profit dedicated to spreading ideas. TED began in 1984 as a conference to bring together new ideas from the fields of technology, entertainment and design. More than 1500 TED talks are now available online for free at www.ted.com, and they have attracted over a billion views. TED is now a global community of individuals interested in learning, understanding and sharing ideas. Current TED events include the annual TED conference, the immersive week-long TEDActive, TEDx programs that engage local communities, and TEDGlobal. In addition, TED engages a number of projects that nurture the spirit of sharing: the TED Open Translation Project, TED Fellows programs, the TED Prize, and the TED Talks online archive. TED2014 THEATRE STAGE TED 2014 marked the 30th annual TED conference. It brought together some of the world’s inspired thinkers and doers to its new event venue – the Vancouver Convention Centre. This year’s approach was about the in-depth, human connection, a chance for past, current and new TED members and attendees to connect one-on-one. Parallel to the events on the main stage, a smaller, secondary theatre would host pop-up talks and caffeine-fuelled conversations in an informal setting. This area would be a space for TEDsters to eat, tweet, talk, blog, and explore ideas together. The MGA workshop was designed to develop the indoor secondary stage. The goal was to create a platform that was portable, easily assembled and disassembled, and easily reconfigurable for use in the local community in the off-season. With a new venue and a new format, TED 2014 promised to be an exciting, new story for Vancouver. http:// conferences.ted.com/TED2014

WHAT IS IMPORTANT
DBR believes in the power of ideas. The key objective of TED is to spread ideas, and it does so by sharing TED talks online for free and by encouraging TED event attendees to learn from each other. This meant providing spaces – both physical and digital – that encourage members to build a community of people with varied expertise. WHY WOOD -
net zero material use (!)
