City of Oakley updating general plan by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The City of Oakley has grown into a desirable community since its 1999 incorporation. Now, city leaders are gearing up to guide it into the future. The city will soon begin updating its general plan — the document that has historically steered decisions in growth management, health and safety, open space and conservation, parks and economic development. “The current general plan is a good one and already has the ‘meat’ of what any quality community would want, but an update is required, and provides a focused opportunity to amend where necessary and desired,” said City Manager Bryan Montgomery. The update process, slated to last 12 to 18 months, will involve a

City leaders have approved a not-to-exceed $199,990 contract with De Novo Planning Group, which will prepare the document that’s expected to carry the city through 2040 and beyond. The original plan was adopted in 2002, with updates in 2010, 2015 and 2016. “The goal is to engage the community and the city council

Preliminary update documents point out the city’s rich heritage, highly ranked schools, safe neighborhoods and a wide variety of community events, with the goal of attracting future commercial development and additional jobs. The city’s future growth and unspecified community issues will

also be explored during the update process, according to city documents. “This is a great opportunity to update the elements to more modern codes and regulations, and provides a fresh look and the overall vision that is desired for the community,” Montgomery said. De Novo Planning Group representatives said the update comes at an opportune time for the city, as its demographic and economic conditions evolve, landuse revitalization opportunities materialize and regional planning efforts move forward. The city’s population has jumped from 25,000 in 2000 to an estimated 42,744 today. “Just as the city’s current general plan has served Oakley well, an updated and modernized Gensee Plan page 26A
