The Brentwood City Council has approved plans for a range of commercial businesses in six buildings to be built on 7.63 acres of undeveloped land. The land is situated south of Lone Tree Way between State Route 4 and Jeffery Way. 24-Hour Fitness is the only likely tenant that has been identified, but it’s expected the remaining spaces could accommodate traditional retail, drive-thru or restaurant establishments. City officials estimate that physical site improvements could begin as early as July or August. “We are excited about the project,” said Mark Tekin of Tekin and Associates see Business page 30

Antioch High names top students by Aly Brown Staff Writer

Antioch High School recently announced its top students for the class of 2018. With a cumulative GPA of 4.4048, Diana Munoz was named the valedictorian and Diego Gonzalez Ventura was named salutatorian. Diana participated in cross-country and kickboxing and was a member of Key Club, California Scholarship Federation and Link Crew. In the community, she has been a tutor, a volunteer for Holy Rosary church events and a translator for immigration workshops. She named Mrs. Quinones as her favorite teacher, noting the AP Spanish teacher to care deeply about the well-being of her students – providing food, listening to their problems and never letting them slack off. On becoming the valedictorian, Diana

said she never thought she could achieve such an honor. “It was hard at first to see surprised faces when people realize that a Mexican, first generation, female student was the valedictorian, but I’ve learned to take that as compliment and to use my platform to encourage others,” she said. “I credit my family for all the sacrifices, encouragement and love they’ve shown me as well as my teachers for always pushing me to do better.” Her parents, Rafael Munoz and Patricia Oliver, shared their feelings in a letter to The Press. “We feel grateful to be able to see her work and dedication result in this because she deserves it,” they wrote. “This wasn’t good luck, it’s a blessing. We’re very proud of her.” Diana will attend UC Davis in the fall and plans to study managerial economics.
