Deer Valley teacher receives presidential honor, award

A Deer Valley High School teacher is among an elite group of educators honored by President Barack Obama for being among the best in their field.

Maria McClain was one of 213 teachers in the nation to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), which is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade math or science

teacher can receive in the U.S. “We are honored to have such talented and committed teachers in our district, and Maria McClain represents one of AUSD’s finest,” said AUSD superintendent Stephanie Anello.

Winners of the award were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians and educators and will receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington D.C., on Sept. 8. see Teacher page 22A

Discovery Bay resident Kevin Graves is on a mission to help families who have lost a loved one in military service.

Inspired by his son, who was killed while serving with the Army in Iraq in 2006, Graves founded Some Gave All, The Joey Graves Foundation, to help other California military families who have experienced a loss, known as gold star families.

Academy offers look at city government The City of Oakley is inviting residents to participate in the 2016 Leadership Academy.

The academy is a free, interactive, civic-education program, designed to provide those who live and work in Oakley with a breadth of background and knowledge of the intricacies of city operations and processes. Blue Devils B Drum Corps makes giant leap for mankind

Several East County students, who are part of the Blue Devils B Drum Corps, are over the moon after launching a first-place finish at the Drum Corps International Open Class World Championship Competition.

For the last eight years, the Concordbased corps has dominated the drum corps circuit, winning Drum Corps International’s Open Class World Championship competition five times.

This year, the team decided to take the competition to the stars. They swept the captions and taking home awards for best brass performance, best color guard performance, best visual performance, best percussion performance and best general effect, with a space-themed production, “To the Moon.”

Local students who are part of the corps include Jeremy Verduzco, of Brentwood; Justin Momoh, of Brentwood; Ruben Bonilla, of Oakley; Gabby Bonilla, of Oakley; and Cameron Villalpando, of Brentwood.

to me,” said Momoh, 17. “It represents all of the time, sweat and tears that were invested into bringing this show to life.”

The competition, which took place last month at the Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championship in Michigan City, Indiana, marked the Blue Devils Performing Arts’ (BDPA) 59th season, which was led by Rick Odello, the Blue Devils director.

“These kids are awesome, and it is a privilege and pleasure to work with them,” said Odello, whose parents founded the BDPA in 1957. “Their performance is an example of what can be generated by a large group of individuals with extreme mental and physical focus working towards a purpose as a corps.”

While the corps made their seamless performance look easy, it was anything but simple. After trying out for a coveted space on the corps, the 150 members become musical athletes who practice for eight months, including 12-hour practices during the summer, to fine tune and perfect their performance.

The emotional pinnacle of their performance was marked by a corps member planting the American flag on the moon, with a sound clip from Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong, as he climbed down the Eagle’s ladder and onto the surface of the moon, proclaiming, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

first place in the competition, it was yet another moment that brought the team together.

“This award represents eight months of incredibly difficult practice and dedication,” said Verduzco, 17. “I’ve made friends and memories that I will remember forever.”

After winning, the Blue Devils B continued on to the World Class Quarter Finals (Prelims), where they placed 15th in the world.

Building to preserve local history

Lately, Dennis Nunn, president of the East Contra Costa County Historical Society (ECCCHS), has been grabbing his tool belt before he heads out the door for a morning of volunteer work at the ECCCHS museum in Knightsen.

Nunn is part of a group of retired handymen called The Breakers, volunteers comprised of men in their mid-70s, who have been spending up to four mornings a week framing the new resource building at the ECCCHS. Lifting heavy beams and joists isn’t as easy as it was 30 years ago, but the men are determined to do whatever it takes to preserve the rich history of East Contra Costa County. They are hoping others in the community will follow suit and help support their newest endeavor.

This summer, the historical society broke ground on a project to build a new, 1,600-square-foot resource building. The building will protect historical documents dating back to the early 1800s and provide the community with a facility to conduct research in a more comfortable atmosphere than the century-old mobile home that is currently being used. Some of the most prized historical documents include the 1858 journal of Charles Marsh, son of John Marsh, and church documents dating back to the early 1800s. Protecting the priceless and irreplaceable documents is paramount to preserving East Contra Costa History, an

“We are doing a lot of the work ourselves to try to save as much money as possible,” said Nunn. “This is such an important project because all of the documents in the resource room are needed to preserve the history of our community and the new building will protect those documents.”

According to ECCCHS Vice President Doreen Forlow, the current resource room has a leaky roof, is stacked from floor to ceiling with documents and has very little space for visitors to move around and actually ac-

cess the files.

“We are afraid of losing history because it’s not being appropriately stored,” said Forlow.

Very large contributions from East Contra Costa County residents Carolyn Sherfy and Bob and Theresa Fletcher, as well as other local contributors helped fund the onset of building costs. Swisher Cement of Antioch was another sponsor for breaking ground.

“We are grateful to Swisher Cement, who did the foundation with substantial savings far and above any other bid we received,

and they couldn’t have done a better job or been more coordinated,” said Kathy Bushman, ECCCHS project manager of the build.

The historical society hopes to work with other local plumbers, electricians and handymen who want to help benefit the community by being part of the project. Whether someone submits a community-minded, user-friendly bid on a project or donates their time or services, it will make a significant impact on the community for years to come.

Other ways to contribute are making direct contributions to the ECCCHS; buying personalized bricks for $100 that will be part of the walkway around the museum; and purchasing plaques for $500 that are mounted on the back of refurbished old desks in the one-room-schoolhouse. There are only six plaques left, of the 20 desks in the classroom.

Another way the community can support the project is attending the ECCCHS 2016 Annual Barbecue on Sunday, Sept. 11.

The event features a delicious tri-tip meal, live music and games and activities for adults and children, including gold panning.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children and free for those under 6. The event will also provide the community with a sneak peak of the resource center building project. Tickets can be purchased at the door or beforehand from any museum member.

ational Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) for District 08, a local barrel-racing organization, is hosting a racing fundraiser for Operation Warriors Foundation, on Sept. 11, at Rafter D Ranch, 8400 Byron Highway, in Brentwood, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization for Bay Area military, with 100 percent of the proceeds going back to local military families. The NBHA is currently accepting boxed and canned food, as well as monetary donations. The races will be a family-oriented, action-packed event, with horses and riders competing against one another from youth to adult.

Historic partnership CLOSING LATE I’ve always told my clients that the closing date is a ‘target date,’ because things can sometimes come up at the last minute that can delay the closing a day, a week or sometimes even longer. It seems like it’s RARE to close on time nowadays.

The reasons for the delay are many.

Sometimes, there is a small change to the buyer’s closing costs, so the buyer HAS to be given another few days to review the new figures. This is according to a relatively new federal law that was put in place to eliminate ‘surprises’ at the closing table for the buyer.

Other times, the buyer’s lender needs more documentation from the buyer about their finances or a letter to explain something.

But more often than not, what I’m seeing right now is the lenders are just swamped with volume. With interest rates back down, the refinance market is big again. This means more loans are trying to get made and closed than the system can handle. They used to make purchase loans a priority, but

So what to do about it? First, agents probably need to stop writing 30-day close of escrow dates on their contracts unless they are REALLY sure it will happen. Better to shoot for 40-45 days. Second, sellers need to not make hard and fast plans assuming the transaction will close on time. Be sure to leave wiggle-room in moving plans regarding moving trucks and if you need these funds to purchase another property. Asking for possession of the home after closing would be a good idea if that can be negotiated. This means you don’t move out until the deal is DONE and the money is in your account.

Staying a step ahead of package thieves

The rise of e-commerce has revolutionized at-home shopping, but it’s bringing more than packages to doorsteps.

Social media sites are full of firsthand experiences of people who have had their packages pilfered from their porches. Many are even left with video evidence of the crime.

“This guy drove into my driveway, got out of the car, grabbed the package and then left,” said Oakley resident Travis Thornton, who captured the theft on his

home surveillance camera in July. “What’s weird is it seemed like he knew exactly where it was.”

Brentwood resident Kathryn Sibley had a similar experience one year ago, when her son’s package took longer to be delivered than anticipated. Sibley jumped online to track it, only to discover it had already been delivered.

“I called the post office, and they said, ‘Sorry, but it looks like it was delivered. The guy delivered it to your doorstep,’” she said.

Sibley filed a police report and was able to have her goods redelivered, but

Thornton wasn’t as lucky.

“The ammo was out of stock, and I never heard back from them after that,” he said.

Brentwood Police Lt. Doug Silva said he doesn’t think doorstep thefts are on the rise in the area, though they pick up around the holiday season.

Oakley police Sgt. Rick Grubaugh said he believes the number of packagetheft reports have dropped in his city.

“One reason could be lack of reporting,” Grubaugh said.” I am not saying it isn’t happening. People could be reporting it on social media, and just not letting

us know about it.”

Grubaugh and Silva said UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service drivers have been instructed to be vigilant during deliveries, especially if a suspicious vehicle follows them on their route. Consumers also are encouraged to take practical steps to ensure their packages do not end up in the wrong hands.

“Use a shipping address where you know someone will be available to receive the package,” said Silva. “Sometimes places of employment will accommodate this under the circumstances.”

The rate of thefts is actually low when considering UPS alone delivers 18 million packages around the world a day, said UPS Spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg.

“In fact, even with the growth of online shopping, we’ve seen that the rate of these incidents has been relatively flat, largely attributable to more consumers using home security cameras to deter theft,” she said.

UPS and FedEx have instituted safeguards to prevent package thefts. UPS allows its customers to specify where a package should be delivered, such as in the backyard or behind a shed. Packages can also be redirected to an alternate delivery location if the buyer knows they won’t be home when the package is set to arrive. Additionally, packages can be sent to a UPS store, including in Antioch, Brentwood and Oakley.

“If customers have concerns about the security of their deliveries, they have options,” Rosenberg said.

FedEx allows its customers to also leave drop-off instructions, redirect dropoff spots or have their packages sent to FedEx office locations. Customers also can specify delivery times, require a signature for delivery and specify that delivery personnel knock on the door or ring the doorbell prior to leaving the goods.

Sibley and Thornton have both adjusted the way packages are delivered to their homes, but have also come up with ingenious ideas to ward off package thieves.

Sibley has approached Raley’s in Brentwood about joining the Amazon Locker program, which provides selfservice delivery locations to pick up and return Amazon.com packages. None currently are available in East County. She now also keeps a dummy package on her doorstep packed with a glitter-filled juice bottle.

“If someone does steal the package off my front porch, they will be a little irritated,” she said. “Everyone in the neighborhood was coming up with their own ideas, like, ‘Now I know what to do with the dog poop’ or ‘I have bunch of poopy diapers.’”

Thornton agrees that form of trickery is a good idea.

“I thought about putting a spring in a box and filling it, so when they open the box, the pressure from opening it just shoots confetti all over the car,” he said. see Thieves page 18A

Forum to focus on building relationships with public, police

In the wake of tumultuous times between America’s police forces and the public, the country is in agreement on at least one topic: something needs to change.

Voices need to be heard, bridges need to be built and the lines of communication opened in order to heal and make a difference. That’s exactly what Con Johnson, former night captain for the San Francisco Police Department, is hoping to accomplish with the upcoming Building Bridges & Tearing Down Barriers event, on Sept.

24, at 6 p.m.

The symposium will be an open panel discussion between the public at large, the police and other members of the community, who will offer their diverse perspectives.

The plan for this discussion is structured around President Obama’s format for the pillars of 21st century-youth-focused policing: building trust and legitimacy; policy and oversight; technology and social media; community policing and crime reduction; training and education; and officer safety and wellness. Each pillar will be discussed at length, in what Johnson calls a holistic approach to policing in terms of shared responsibility and individual accountability.

“This is an organic, grassroots effort,” said Johnson, who has 30 years of law enforcement experience. “We want to create

a symbiotic relationship between law enforcement and the community to develop partnerships that are rooted in trust and respect.”

The goal for this event and its future is to garner public participation to further discuss how Antioch should be policed.

Johnson eagerly calls upon citizens to attend and share their voices, but he emphasized the importance of including young people. According to Johnson, when there is a strain between the public and the police, the angst is particularly felt among the youth. And it is predominantly young people who have set in motion the call for reform.

“This call for change is a nationwide conversation,” he said. “We want to continue the dialogue so that the youth feel they, too, have a voice, and that we have heard their voice and we’re trying to respond.”

The panel will be a diverse one, with speakers ranging from a police chief and a clergy member to a psychologist, a nurse and a lawyer, who will touch on the criminal justice system.

Vehicle bill drives testing forward public roadways and allow California to remain on the forefront of autonomousvehicle innovation and implementation.”

If signed, AB 1592 will be the first bill to allow a purely autonomous vehicle, without the presence of a driver, to operate on a public road.

The shared-autonomous vehicles, which will be tested at GoMentum Station this fall, operate at speeds less than 25 mph. The long-term goal is to utilize the vehicles to improve mobility by connecting riders to larger,

mass-transit platforms such as regional buses and BART. AB 1592 carves out an exemption for CCTA and their GoMentum Station program, while not overstepping upcoming federal or state regulations, which will clearly define all standards for autonomous vehicles in California.

“Our state has always been a global leader in technology, environmental protection and transportation innovation,” said Bonilla. “AB 1592 will move us one step closer towards implementing new, safe, efficient, low-cost and flexible transportation modes, which will benefit communities across California.”

California legalizes lane splitting

Always the trailblazer, California has once again taken the lead, this time becoming the first state to legalize lane splitting for motorcycles.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill (AB) 51 on Friday, Aug. 19.

“I am thrilled to see that California is once again at the forefront of commonsense road safety legislation,” said bill sponsor and Assemblymember Tom Quirk (D - Hayward). “Signing this bill will bring legitimacy to this practice and help to keep our roads safer and our drivers – both motorcyclists and motorists – better educated.”

Lane splitting occurs when a motorcycle moves between lanes of stopped or slowmoving traffic. Those who commute regularly on Highway 4 and other byways may be scratching their heads, as lane splitting is a common sight on Contra Costa roadways.

But while the practice was not previously legal, it was also not expressly illegal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) have generally been tolerant of lane splitting, provided it was practiced safely.

“AB 51 now makes it clear that lane splitting is legal,” said Officer John Col-

burn, who rides a motorcycle for the Brentwood Police Department. “However, riders must exercise extreme caution when splitting lanes. Ultimately, a rider splitting lanes must ride at a speed that is safe for the conditions. AB 51 does not allow a rider to be exempt from having responsibility during a collision while lane splitting or during an enforcement action for unsafe operation. From an enforcement perspective, we will have to rely more on what speed we feel was safe for the conditions during the riders choice to split lanes.”

An attempt to develop and publish safety guidelines for lane splitting started in 2012, when the CHP assembled a committee of traffic-and motorcycle-safety experts to address the matter. The CHP published the resultant guidelines in March 2013.

However, a complaint was subsequently filed with the California Office of Administrative Law claiming that the CHP guidelines were unlawful, as they constituted underground regulations.

The Office of Administrative Law sided with the complainant and directed the CHP

to strike its material regarding the practice, and the DMV quickly followed suit.

Quirk and Assemblymember Tom Lackey (R - Palmdale) co-authored AB 51 to establish lane splitting as explicitly legal and to give the CHP authority to develop educational guidelines for lane splitting.

“California took a groundbreaking step as the first state to formally allow motorcycle lane splitting,” said Lackey. “More importantly, we are now giving riders and motorists clear guidance on when it is safe.

This is a huge win for roadway safety.”

Until last year, there was no comprehensive study of the safety of lane splitting.

UC Berkeley’s Safe Transportation Research and Education Center conducted analysis of nearly 6,000 collisions involving motorcycles.

The study found that the practice is relatively safe when traffic does not exceed 50 mph and the speed of the motorcycle does not exceed surrounding traffic by more than 15 mph.

The bill stipulates that in order for lane splitting to be legal, motorcyclists must not exceed 50 mph, travel more than 15 mph faster than surrounding traffic and obey all other applicable traffic regulations.

“Surprisingly, we found that the difference in speed between the motorcycle and the surrounding traffic was a bigger predictor of injury than speed alone,” said Thomas Rice, epidemiologist at SafeTREC, which is based at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. “Above a 15 mph speed differential, the risk of injury rose significantly.”

Of the accidents studied, 17 percent involved a motorcyclist who was lane splitting. The analysis indicated that these riders were more likely to be wearing a better helmet, less likely to have used alcohol, less likely to have a passenger, less likely to be injured and were more likely to have been traveling at lower speeds than motorcyclists involved in other collisions.

Indoor waterpark resort may splash down in Brentwood

A wave of excitement is hanging over Brentwood with news of North America’s largest family of indoor waterpark resorts possibly opening a site in the city.

“There is a lot neither side knows yet, but the most important part is the sides have started the discussion, and that is where we are at,” said Brentwood City Manager Gus Vina about discussions with Great Wolf Resorts Inc. The company operates 13 parks around the nation, with locations featuring an indoor water park, a hotel, family entertainment centers, restaurants, retail stores and meeting rooms fit for conferences and seminars.

“This is big; this could light up East County,” said Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor, who noted that the 50-acre resort would likely go along Lone Tree Way and Sand Creek Road, right off Highway 4.

The city began talking with the Wisconsin-based company about six months ago, but no formal negotiations have taken place, Vina said. It’s believed that Brentwood is competing with Gilroy in Santa Clara County for the Northern California location.

Great Wolf Resorts Inc. did not return calls for comment.

“The key right now is for the two sides to continue to talk to see if there is any traction to move this thing forward,” Vina said. “They are evaluating the market, so whatever cities they are looking at, we at least know we are in the running.”

It’s expected a resort would bring 600 jobs and plenty of excitement. The only other California location is Garden Grove, which opened in March, complete with a 105,000 square-foot, indoor water park, 603 hotel suites, interactive games, a buffet restaurant, Wood Fired Grill eatery, a Dunkin Donuts shop and 20,000 square feet of flexible meeting space.

The potential Brentwood site is already slated to include commercial development, which is ideal because of 400 acres of undeveloped land that is accessible from the highway, Vina said. The city council’s land use and development subcommittee recently received an informational report on the facility, which went smoothly. “(Bringing the resort to Brentwood) has a good chance,” Vina said. “We will see where it goes. These types of negotiations are kind of like a roller coaster ride – you have your

Taylor believes everything is aligning for the company to make a grand entrance in Brentwood, drawing visitors from around the Bay Area, Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley. The Brentwood area already attracts an estimated 200,000 visitors a year for Upick season.

“You know how many will stay?” Taylor asked. “A lot.”

Area residents expressed mixed reactions about the potential resort.

Antioch resident Peter Unpingco said he’s excited.

“I can only imagine it would be ten times better than Water World in Concord,” he said.

However, fellow East County resident Anahi Ortiz said it’s a bad idea with the ongoing drought.

“I just don’t think it would work out,” she said.

Resident Tyler Dumond questioned whether it would draw enough business.

“I don’t think we have enough population to sustain that,” he said.

Vina said it isn’t expected to have an adverse effect on the water situation. The resorts use a recycled system, much like the city’s parks, and little evaporation would occur, since it’s an indoor facility. The city’s wastewater-treatment plan was already slated for expansion prior to the start of the exploration process.

“I think this is a pretty exciting proposition for the city, and it is very smart for us to engage them to see if this is going to work moving forward or not,” Vina said.

Screening is just the first step to determining your level, but a full bonedensity scan, which is set up through your doctor to get the whole picture, may be in order. A few years ago, I was watching a commercial on television about bone density.

Actually, there were two commercials, both with very familiar faces explaining the ins and outs of fragile bones as we get older.

One was the flying nun herself, Sally Fields, and the other was Senior actress Blythe Danner, orner better known today as Gwyneth Paltow’s mom. The ladies had aged gracefully, but seemed to be very concerned about how brittle their bones were becoming.

Osteoporosis, or thinning bones, can result in painful fractures. First day of school hardest on mom For 20 years, one of my favorite days has been the first day of school.

After a long summer of Slip N’ Slides, sunburns and popsicles, I always looked forward to that first day of rounding up all the kids dressed in their new outfits and Hangin’ in backpacks, loading them up into the here van and dropping them off at school.

For years, I had to go to four different schools - preschool, elementary, middle school and high school.

Vicki I felt like a bus McKenna driver; I was a bus driver! Shamefully, I will admit that we were not the most prompt of families.

When Haley was in the first grade, she racked up 52 late arrivals!

Thankfully, her teacher understood my drop-off challenge and never made a big deal about it. You can bet I made sure to remember her on Teacher Appreciation Day. I used to joke with my mom friends that on the first day of school, I had better be careful, or I might get hit by a car while doing a dance of joy in the

street. Pulling the van into the driveway, I would sit there taking in the silence with a big smile on my face while collecting the remnants of half-eaten bananas and Pop Tarts from the floor of my van.

I would enter my peacefully quiet and wonderfully empty house, make a nice cup of coffee and enjoy my treasured few hours alone before the pick-up routine started. Dropoffs and pickups defined my day.

This year, the first day of school took me by surprise. My two remaining kids at home are both in high school.

My son is a senior, and Haley is a freshman. It didn’t occur to me until a few days before school started that Ryan could drive Haley to and from school.

Wait a minute. You mean I don’t have to drop anyone off or pick anyone up? My brain could barely wrap itself around that thought. How would I know what day it was? Why would I even get dressed? What is happening?

The first day of school arrived. The kids were up early. It was cute to see them still excited for their first day. I put on my workout stuff, because staying in my pajamas just felt so weird and wrong.

Time for Brentwood to reform tax allocation

Guest Commentary The Brentwood City Council is failing in its duty to provide fire and emergency services for the city’s residents.

The council members are violating their oath of office, breaching their duty of care and are not taking necessary actions described in the city’s general plan.

By any first-world standard, the residents of Brentwood, as well as all 110,000 residents of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD), are receiving inadequate fire and emergency medical services. People are dying, homes are burning down and residents are paying excessive fire-insurance premiums.

All of this is occurring while the city council, at the direction of City Manager Gus Vina, refuses to take the one sure path to increase funding to the ECCFPD property-tax allocation reform.

Rather than floating a new tax initiative in front of the public for approval or, more likely disapproval, our elected leaders could fix the problem by directing city administration to adjust the growth of their budgets to a slightly slower expansion rate and transfer the money to the fire district.

In October, a task force comprised of two fire chiefs, a battalion chief, three firefighter union leaders, two city managers and the chiefs of staff for two county supervisors reported, “The ECCFPD has on-going structural financial deficiencies to the extent that it is unable to provide adequate fire suppression and medical

response services to the communities in the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.”

In March, ECCFPD Captain Gil Guerrero, union vice president and task force member, at a public hearing said, “Discovery Bay has lost three residents to cardiac arrest, because engines were unavailable to respond. ECCFPD has no paramedics, no fireboat and no ladder truck. ECCFPD serves over 110,000 people, and its three engines respond to 6,900 calls annually.”

In June, ECCFPD paid Citygate Associates, an industry leading consulting firm, for the production of a master-plan study. It was presented to the fire district in June and says, in part, “The district is the most under deployed and administratively understaffed fire department we have seen in over a decade for the size of the communities to be protected.”

In April, the Contra Costa County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) published a Municipal Services Review (MSR) that states that the No. 1 challenge the ECCFPD faces is low property-tax funding.

“Due to the volunteer and extraordinarily small service populations of the predecessor-dependent districts prior to the formation of ECCFPD, low propertytax rates were allocated to fire service. The average tax rate for the district is 7 percent, compared to 12 percent for Confire and 14 percent for San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District. The results are known. And still, the Brentwood City Council refuses to take the only action under its complete control to fix the problem - reform property-tax allocation.

The time to solve the problem is now, not in November after the utility-user tax fails, as polling suggests, and as two prior tax initiatives have done.

Mayor Bob Taylor, Vice Mayor Joel Bryant, Councilman Steve Barr, Councilman Erick Stonebarger and Councilman Gene Clare: Tell your city manager to create pro forma budgets for the next four years that reflect 1.3 percent less propertytax growth each year, and direct that the 1.3 percent portion of increased revenues go to the fire district. You’ll still have an additional 4.7 percent of the projected 6 percent growth in property-tax funding to work with in the budgets.

Fix the structural funding problem, Brentwood City Council, and begin at once to lead the allocation-reform effort.

The citizens you represent deserve it.

but they both opted for a breakfast drink instead. I offered to make them lunches, but they grabbed some assorted snacks and threw them into their backpacks. I guess eating an actual lunch isn’t cool.

I hovered around them, wishing them a great first day, but they were in a hurry, and it was clear they didn’t need me. They loaded into Ryan’s pick-up truck and gave me a quick wave. When did they get so grown up?

I stood there in the driveway and watched them drive down the street. I asked God to keep them safe.

The last thing I felt like doing was a dance of joy.

I meandered back into my too-quiet and depressingly empty house. The day stretched out ahead of me like the salt flats of Utah. I didn’t have a pick-up time to define my day, so there was no rush to do anything. I felt lost. I had no purpose! Who was I? Was I having a midlife crisis?

I hopped on my exercise bike. I had no excuse not to! I began pedaling. An hour and a half later, I decided to get off and find something else to do. It was only 9 a.m.!

I did laundry, unloaded the dishwasher, loaded the dishwasher, watered the backyard, surfed the Internet and bought some stuff I didn’t need. I decided to bake cookies for my kids, whom I missed terribly!

I considered redecorating the entire house, but decided to clean it instead.

The most disturbing thing of all was I was starting up conversations with my cats. I was becoming a crazy cat lady! If I am this bored on the first day of school, what will I do tomorrow? I might need to take up scrapbooking or get a job!

Glancing at the clock, I was panicstricken.

“Oh no, its 2:45!”

All those years of pickups were still etched in my brain.

“I have to go get a good parking spot! Don’t want to be late on the first day of …”

Then I remembered. I’m not picking anyone up! Not today, not tomorrow and not for the rest of my life!

I heard the garage door open. It was music to my ears; my kids were home!

The house was clean and fresh-baked cookies awaited their arrival. They blew in with smiles, dropping their backpacks on the floor.

“You need to sign a bunch of stuff, Mom,” they both announced.

“Yay!” I thought to myself. “They need me again!”

Grabbing a cookie, they offered a few details about their first day. There were some highs and some lows, but the best part was that they wanted to tell me about it.

It was then that I finally felt like doing that dance of joy.

In July 2015, McClain, who has been teaching mathematics for the past 28 years (20 of which have been at Deer Valley High School), began the two-year selection process when she was chosen as one of five of California’s finalists. The finalists’ applications were then sent to the NSF for review and final selection.

On Aug. 8, 2016, McClain received an email telling her she had been chosen to receive the award.

“I am truly honored to be recognized for the work that I do with my students every day,” said McClain. “I am proud to represent my school and district and the secondary math teachers of California. I hope that with this recogni-

Graves’ son, Spc. Joseph A. Graves, was killed during an escort mission outside of Baghdad, when his platoon was ambushed. Spc. Graves was the only casualty.

This year, the foundation will be logging its 10th year of helping local gold star families. On Sept. 16, the foundation will be hosting the 10th-annual Joey Graves Memorial Golf Tournament at the Discovery Bay Golf and Country Club, to raise money in support of its mission.

“The foundation was established to honor not only my son, but all those who have given to their country by answering the call to duty,” Graves said. “The money raised goes towards the mission of the foundation. It’s really the only fundraiser we do during the year.”

“It’s an awesome tournament,” Alvarez said. “I help assist running the tournament (the day of). We get over 100 people every time. There’s always a little vibe going on during this tournament; it’s a little bit different. We love having it out here, and the cause is a good one we enjoy supporting.”

Dave Davies, a friend of Graves, will be making the drive out from Hayward to golf in the tournament. While his isn’t a part of a gold star family, Davies appreciates Graves’ passion for the cause he supports.

“I’ve been supporting the golf tournament for eight years,” he said. “My fa-

vorite thing about it is the sense of community that you get during the course of the entire day. The people there have a shared focus, and it’s very much a community type of event.”

One local example of the foundation’s efforts to honor the fallen is the 26 banners displayed along Discovery Bay Boulevard honoring soldiers who have been killed in action. Graves makes a special effort to include family members of those who participate in the golf tournament. The 6-foot banners are purchased by the foundation with permission of soldier’s families. The foundation also has nearly $100,000 invested in college funds for children of local fallen heroes.

Vacaville holds off Liberty in opener

Liberty did not start its football season with an easy game, playing host to traditional Sac-Joaquin Section powerhouse Vacaville in the opener.

While the Lions hung tough for most of the game, a strong second half from the Bulldogs was too much, and Vacaville defeated Liberty 37-26. The two teams finished a back-and-forth first half tied at 17.

While much of the third quarter remained scoreless, the Bulldogs had a tremendous advantage in the field-position battle, aided by a strong wind and some big punts. Eventually, that wore the Lions’ defense down.

Two late third-quarter touchdowns gave the Bulldogs a 31-17 lead. Liberty did claw back into it, but were never any closer than eight points away.

“I think we played pretty well,” said head coach Jeff Walters. “We showed that we’re kind of a young team, very talented, a little inexperienced and it kind of showed.

That whole third quarter was all about field position. We just couldn’t flip the field. Their punter was hitting some great, booming punts, and the defense was on the field for a long time. That’s not a winning formula.”

The game couldn’t have started much better for Liberty, as Vacaville fumbled on the game’s first play. Three plays later, the Lions were in the end zone when junior quarterback Ryan Dutt connected with Trejon Hawkins on a 17-yard touchdown.

Barefoot water-skier soars to golden finish

When Knightsen resident Jerry Kanawyer was in his 20s, he made a pact with his friend that they would learn to barefoot waterski in one weekend on the Delta; he made it on his third attempt.

That was in the 1980s, and he hasn’t stopped pulling off amazing feats since.

Now 54, he’s one of the top barefoot water skiers in the world, having won nine national championships and five bronze medals, four silver medals and a team gold at the world level.

“If you keep skiing, it keeps you in shape and keeps you going and young,” he said.

While Walters acknowledged that his quarterback’s play “drives him nuts sometimes,” he also issued a lofty comparison.

“He’s got a little Roethlisberger in him,” the coach said. “He’s got a little gunslinger in him, but sometimes, he just doesn’t go down, and that’s what I tell my coaches. You’re playing poker, and you’ve just got to manage it.”

Liberty will tangle with San Leandro on the road next week.

“It starts next week against San Leandro,” Walters said. “They’re a very physical team, a very athletic team; very similar to Vacaville. But realistically, it’s all about getting ready for the league. This game taught us that if we put things together, we’re a pretty good football team.”

Falcons run away from Turlock High

Late in the second quarter last Friday, the Freedom High football team scored twice in a span of 1:11, pulling away from visiting Turlock on its way to a seasonopening 41-6 victory.

The Falcons led 13-0, when senior running back Ronnie Rivers scored for the second time on an eightyard run to make the score 20-0. Freedom’s defense forced a quick punt from the Bulldogs and, after the punt was kicked out of bounds at the Turlock 37, it took the Falcons just two plays to put the game away.

After an eight-yard run by Rivers on first down, Jonathan Pierce found sophomore Giles Jackson for a 29-yard touchdown, giving Freedom an insurmountable 27-0 lead heading into the break.

The Falcons allowed Turlock to enter their side of the field just once in the first half, when the Bulldogs used a 41-yard run by quarterback Danny Velasquez to drive from their own two-yard line to the Falcons’ 23-yard line.

However, the Freedom defense held on fourth down and the offense went on a 77-yard scoring drive, capped by a 49-yard burst down the left sideline by Rivers.

Freedom took an early lead, when Dominic Mather found junior Baylei Coston for a 28-yard touchdown pass, less than two minutes into the game, and the Falcons extended their lead early in the second quarter on Rivers’ longest run of the night. The senior running back finished the game with 22 carries for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

“I thought we did real good getting to them right off the bat tonight,” said Freedom coach Kevin Hartwig. “We set the tone early and established momentum.”

the second time; this time from three yards out. Coston finished with four catches for 53 yards and two scores.

Turlock got on the board late in the third quarter, when Velasquez threw a 34-yard scoring pass, but Freedom forced a running clock in the fourth quarter on Rivers’ third touchdown.

Velasquez led the Bulldogs with 20 carries for 96 yards on the ground, but only nine of those yards came in the second half. The Freedom defense sacked Velas-

quez three times in the game.

Cory Cox also had a big night for Freedom, blocking a punt and snagging an interception on defense.

“I thought we played really well tonight,” said Freedom defensive coordinator Sam Arnold. “I’m definitely pleased with our first-game effort and execution.”

Freedom (1-0) travels to Tracy this week. The Bulldogs (0-1) fell to San Ramon Valley last week, 35-28.

“I literally think he’s crazy when he is doing all those flips,” said Tracy Simon, Kanawyer’s wife, who plans to start competing soon. “He’s just phenomenal for the sport.”

While his assent has been intriguing to his followers, his early beginnings were equally unique.

He doesn’t remember the reason for the initial pact that drew him to the sport, but his first contest came just a year after he suffered a severe concussion in an automobile accident. During the crash, his truck flipped seven times.

Not long after, at the age of 24, he was flipping on the water in his first competition.

“I never thought I would be skiing in a world championship, period,” he said.

“It never crossed my mind.”

His longevity in the sport is due in part to his undying passion to improve.

He spent the first 20 years of his career teaching himself, but soon after he got professional training, he became the one doing the instructing.

“He’s amazing,” said Simon. “He inspires so many people to begin barefooting.”

Today, the roofing contractor and farmer lives in Diablo Shores, in Knightsen, spending up to 20 hours a week in the fall, spring and summer in his backyard lake, honing his skills.

It all pays off during his four to six national competitions a year. Aside from the thrill of winning, he’s also amassed a family of competitors who span the globe.

For him, it makes a sport that offers no real financial incentive all worthwhile.

“Our sport is all like a big family,” said Kanawyer, who has competed in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Germany and England. “I have friends all over the world (who) are like family to me. That keeps me going.”

Just four years shy of 60, he’s got no plans of stopping, and for good reason. He’s yet to capture an individual gold medal, which hangs over him each time he hits the water. There’s still time though, and he plans to continue competing until 2022, when he turns 60.

Saying goodbye to summer safely Labor Day symbolizes the end of summer for you and your pet, so it may be time to start planning your weekend getaway - whether it be to the beach, the mountains or somewhere in between.

Before you hit the road, it’s important to plan ahead for pet travel and always keep the best interests of your furry sidekick in mind. Traveling with your pet can be wonderful or not so pleasant. It’s all a matter of proper planning and preparation.

Here are a few tips to ensure your Labor Day getaway with your pet is a safe one: 1. No heads out the window Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but never travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport, and it is always dangerous.

2. Frequent pit stops Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel-service areas have designated areas for walking your pet.

Be sure to stay in this area, particularly when your pet needs a potty break and, of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and

wearing a collar with a permanent-identification tag.

3. Proper hydration During your pit stops, be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistles. Occasionally, traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

4. Watch the food intake It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food, and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!).

5. Don’t leave them alone Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

6. Practice restraint Be sure that your pet is safely secured in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet-safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe.

They not only protect your pet from injury, but they also help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive.
