Deer Valley teacher receives presidential honor, award by Amy Schrader Correspondent

A Deer Valley High School teacher is among an elite group of educators honored by President Barack Obama for being among the best in their field. Maria McClain was one of 213 teachers in the nation to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), which is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade math or science

teacher can receive in the U.S. “We are honored to have such talented and committed teachers in our district, and Maria McClain represents one of AUSD’s finest,” said AUSD superintendent Stephanie Anello. Winners of the award were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians and educators and will receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington D.C., on Sept. 8. see Teacher page 22A

Discovery Bay resident Kevin Graves is on a mission to help families who have lost a loved one in military service. Inspired by his son, who was killed while serving with the Army in Iraq in 2006, Graves founded Some Gave All, The Joey Graves Foundation, to help other California military families who have experienced a loss, known as gold star families. “I do this because I get my healing by helping other people heal,” Graves said. “I carry on my son’s mission.
