Restore the Delta (RTD), a Stocktonbased environmental advocacy group, released a report last week entitled “Fate of the Delta” that attempts to bring to the forefront voices that have been overlooked in the debate regarding the California WaterFix project. “The report represents true facts about how the California WaterFix will destroy many lives and the Delta itself, all for the gain of water profiteers,” said Gary Mulcahy, government liaison for the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, in an email to The Press. “I hope that the newly elected come Novemsee Delta page 26

City welcomes planning advisors by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The City of Oakley’s Citizen Planning Advisor team has a trio of new faces. Residents John Amie, Thomas Will and Zain Mehmood will replace Samuel Drucker, Roni Gomez and Nick Lawrence, who have resigned from the five-member volunteer group that reviews subdivision, commercial and industrial projects against adopted design guidelines before city council design-review hearings. Current members Patricia Twigg and Ravi Baat will retain their positions. “(Citizen planning advisors) increase citizen input early on in the community development process,” said Nancy Marquez-Suarez, human resources manager and assistant to the city manager. The three were the lone applicants to fill the positions, said Planning Manager Joshua McMurray. Amie, a retired eight-year Oakley resident with a nearly 40-year background in electronic

manufacturing and supply-chain management, applied after completing the Oakley Leadership Academy, an interactive civic education program offering Oakleyites background and knowledge of city operations and processes. “Having gone through the Oakley Leadership Academy, looking at how the city operates, it became very apparent to me how important having citizen input is to the council and to team Oakley,” said Amie, who’s also served on the Oversight Board to the Successor Agency to the Oakley Redevelopment Agency. Mehmood, a 15-year city resident, is a City of San Ramon transportation demand management outreach coordinator who has held multiple information technology jobs and realty investment positions. “I wanted to be more involved in what I can do for the town I live in,” he said. “Doing IT operations, I also dabbled in commercial real estate, advising clients on how they could get projects to work, what could be more efficient for them and how they look at zoning variances in the City of San Francisco.”

Will enters with a construction management degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and 10 years of experience, working on single-family residential developments, multifamily housing projects and high-rise buildings. “I believe my diverse construction background will provide a well-educated opinion regarding city-planning agenda items,” he said, in his official position application. City officials estimate the group will evaluate about 10 to 12 projects a year, looking closely at key elements, including neighborhood layout and design, hierarchy of roads, entrances, trails, residential siting and lot design. “The group has been receiving projects over the past two years, and the comments and feedback from the advisors have been valuable and received well by the city council,” McMurray said. The three newcomers are slated to begin immediately, Marquez-Suarez said. For more information on the new members, visit https://goo.gl/jik9tt. To comment, visit www.thepress.net
