Winterize your investment at Classic Boat Works AMY SCHRADER

when many boat owners store their boat until spring, it’s the perfect time to plan ahead and find the best storage for your investment. Classic Boat Works in Brentwood provides boat storage, service and maintenance, parts and expert repairs at a fair price. When it comes to storing your boat for the winter months, owner Ken Luke, who has over 30 years of experience in the industry, stresses the importance of a light winterization. “The fuel we use today has ethanol, which wreaks havoc on your engine’s systems, and even mildew can cost thousands of dollars in repairs if your boat isn’t properly stored,” said Luke. According to Luke, this light winterization includes fogging the motor so the fuel system and engine components are protected from the elements, changing the oil, draining water from the block to protect from damage and using mildew-resistant pads to prevent mold damage. “If you don’t take steps to protect your boat against mold, when you pull your boat from storage in the spring, you could be walking into a serious mold situation,” said Luke. By winter, their new valet storage facility will be open, which will feature improved security and technology. “Our new facility will have a customdesigned security system with motion sensors for every boat,” said Luke. “It’s the same type of technology used by the military that customers can access from their phone, laptop or smart device.”
Another aspect that customers of Classic Boat Works appreciate is the expert staff, including a full-time mechanic who retired from Sea Ray Boats. “There’s only a handful of boat repair shops in the area left,” said Luke. “We aren’t a big company, but our services are big, our workmanship is unconditional and we will always go the extra mile to help you.”
Classic Boat Works’ old-fashioned service has garnered loyal customers, including Oakley resident Luke Brown. “They are very knowledgeable about any kind of boat and are the only shop I’ll trust with my boats,” said Brown. “Beyond that, they’re trustworthy and always do what they say they’re going to do.” While many East Bay boat owners may still enjoy months on the water, Luke recommends they call him when they’re ready to throw on the boat cover. “When you decide your time is up, give us a call,” said Luke. “We will be ready to take care of you.” Classic Boat Works is located at 6715 Brentwood Blvd., Suite A, in Brentwood. VIN etchings help to deter car thieves Vehicle identification number etching, or VIN etching, is a theft deterrent. An automobile’s VIN, a 17-character code consisting of letters and numbers unique to each vehicle, is etched onto the vehicle’s windows and is a way to trace a vehicle back to the owner in the event of a theft. Some manufacturers may etch the VIN onto
the windows of all of their vehicles, while others may not. Dealerships may charge VIN etching fees to buyers of new vehicles, but buyers should always consult their insurance companies before agreeing to pay. Some insurance providers may even discount premiums for vehicles with a VIN etching. However, drivers may not want to pay VIN etching fees if their

insurance providers will not discount their premiums, so it pays to consult with providers before purchasing a new vehicle. In addition, drivers who want to save money on etching fees but still do all they can to deter prospective car thieves may want to purchase their own VIN etching kits, which typically cost around $20. – Courtesy Metro Creative

vacationing or touring the
country, and with proper maintenance, they can run like new for years. According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, RV shipments through February 2017 totaled 73,287 units. This represents an increase of 8.6 percent from the same period in 2016. In fact, RV shipments have increased for seven consecutive years. This popularity might be driven by the affordability and convenience of vacationing in an RV. Essentially hotels or homes on wheels, campers provide many amenities in a compact package. From the freedom it brings to the outdoor adventures shared, owning an RV can fill your family with a lifetime of treasured memories. Hardcastle’s RV Center in Oakley is East Contra Costa County’s source for a variety of RV needs, including RV and camper-shells, parts, service, accessories and RV storage. The experts there have been servicing the Bay Area and Northern California since 1972. Owner Doug Hardcastle’s passion for RVs began with a childhood filled with outdoor adventures and road trips in his family’s 14-foot Aloha Trailer.

“My parents would usually sleep in the trailer, and we’d sleep in tents or sometimes just in sleeping bags under the stars,” said Hardcastle. “It was always fun and brought us together. It was great getting out in the wilderness, visiting the mountains, ocean and redwoods.” According to the recreational vehicle advice gurus at Do It Yourself RV, RVs require all of the standard maintenance of a car plus much more. ♦♦ Schedule oil changes and filter replacements. To keep the hard-working engine of an RV operating at optimal capacity, oil

changes and air-filter replacements should be conducted at regular intervals and in adherence to the owner’s manual. Such maintenance prevents engines from seizing. ♦♦ Keep it covered. RV roofs are susceptible to sun and environmental damage. Store the RV under a steel RV carport or cover it using a product specifically designed for an RV. Remember to routinely inspect and clean the roof of the camper as well. ♦♦ Check for leaks. Look under the RV or tow the vehicle for any signs of leaks. Repair leaks promptly. Transmission fluid leaks can lead to vehicle
fires. When checking for leaks, check fluids to ensure they’re at the proper level. This includes engine oil, transmission fluid, powersteering fluid, windshield washer fluid and brake fluid. ♦♦ Check radiator coolant. Radiator coolant is another important fluid to check. Antifreeze protects the engine in cold temperatures, but it also helps the engine run cooler in hot temperatures. Wait for the RV to cool down before checking fluids. ♦♦ Periodically run the generator. RV generators shouldn’t go unused for too long. Gasoline has a short shelf life, and after time it can break down, condense and damage the generator’s internal components. Run the generator if the RV has not been used for a while. Be sure to change the oil and filter of the generator regularly as well. ♦♦ Drain and clean water and waste systems. Water systems can benefit from being drained periodically and flushed with clean, fresh water. The disposal waste system needs to be drained as indicated in the owner’s manual. ♦♦ Lubricate joints and slide-out rails. Avoid rust and corrosion by spraying moving parts with a lubricant spray. How to make commuting less stressful
C
ommuting stress does not end when working adults arrive at their offices in the
morning nor when they enter their homes at night. Researchers found commuters whose travel times lasted between 61 and 90 minutes were most negatively affected by their commutes. Reducing commute times may be more difficult than it seems, especially for commuters who own their homes and don’t want to sell their properties to move closer to work. Even renters may hesitate to move closer to their offices, as rental units closer to work might be more expensive than their existing apartments, even when taking lower commuting costs into account. Commuting in Contra Costa County can be challenging – especially if you are driving alone, but 511 Contra Costa is one option that just might help alleviate some of the stress. As the county’s comprehensive transportation demand management (TDM) program, 511 Contra Costa offers free assistance in taking advantage of all the options the county has to offer commuters and provides a suite of services to encourage initiatives aimed at increasing the number of

employees who rideshare, use public transportation, bike or walk to work. The following suggestions won’t eliminate long commutes, but they might make mornings and evenings a little more relaxing and beneficial to overall health. ♦♦ Embrace active commuting. A 2014 study found that people who commuted via walking or public transportation were happier and had a greater ability to concentrate and psychological wellbeing when compared to those who
ardcastle’s RV Center
drove to work. ♦♦ Carpool to work. Many commuters cite a loss of privacy as the primary reason they do not carpool with their co-workers, but carpooling may help alleviate some of the stress associated with commuting. For example, carpools tend to rotate drivers. During traffic jams, passengers may not be as stressed as drivers, who must negotiate traffic patterns and deal with equally frustrated drivers who may be driving aggressively.
In addition, sharing a commute with someone opens the door to conversation, which can be a welcome diversion from traffic. ♦♦ Prepare for boredom. Commuting can be just as boring as it is frustrating, even on days when the roads are relatively empty or the train cars are not filled to capacity. Boredom can make commutes more tiring and frustrating, so download podcasts or audiobooks to listen to on the way to and from work so you have something interesting to occupy your mind. ♦♦ Embrace the lack of control. While lack of control over their trips to and from the office frustrates many professionals, embracing that lack of control might just alleviate some of the stress. Drivers can make a concerted effort to stop letting traffic jams be so frustrating, while mass transit riders can be glad they are not the ones responsible for navigating congested highways or train tunnels facing heavy delays. Commuting is a significant source of stress for many professionals, but there are ways to make commutes less stressful and even enjoyable. For more information on the 511 Contra Costa program, visit 511contracosta.org/employers or email tips@511contracosta.org.

Rent a boat for a taste of life at sea AMY SCHRADER
T
here are many different options when it comes to renting vacations homes and
unique overnight getaways, but for those wanting a taste of life at sea, you don’t have to actually buy a boat. There are several boat rental options in the East Bay for those who wish to play at seafaring. “There is nothing like being on the lake, and everyone always enjoys boating and being on the water,” said Jason Williams, Invert Sports team member. Invert Sports is a full-service boat rental company that offers the best quality MasterCraft water sports boats and services all U.S. lakes, rivers and reservoirs. It offers free launch and retrieval services right at the lake of the customer’s choice, which makes hitting the water easy, regardless of your experience level. Invert Sports technicians show customers how to start, stop and operate the boat safely and can also provide a captain service for those who don’t want to drive the boat. “Our MasterCraft boats are used for all types of activities,” said Williams. “People use the boats for sightseeing, speeding and exploring the lake, water sports, swimming,
houseboat vacations and fishing.” Customers can pay extra for water sports equipment, including vests, water boards, tubes, water skis, wakesurf, kneeboards and other toys. Once you’ve reserved your boat, there are plenty of harbors in East County to launch from. Lauritzen Yacht Harbor in Oakley is a fullservice Marina located at the Antioch Bridge. “We’re the gateway to the Delta,” said Lauritzen Yacht Harbor co-owner Margaret Lauritzen. “Our harbor is a great spot for launching your boat. You can head east for Stockton or west for San Francisco.” Lauritzen Yacht Harbor has open and covered berths; boat storage; a large two-lane, 100-foot concrete launch ramp; fuel dock; and a pump-out station. Bethel Harbor is another full-service marina located in the heart of the California Delta. The harbor features amenities including dry storage, covered berths, a gas dock, campgrounds, a convenience store, a boat yard, parts and service, pump-out station, restrooms and showers and a special valet service that makes getting your boat into and out of the water fast and easy. “When people come to Bethel Harbor, they disconnect their boat and leave it anywhere in the parking lot, and our staff will grab it with one of our tractors and bring it to our loading elevator, which will lower

the boat into the water,” said Scott Mack, assistant harbor master. After spending the day on the water, Bethel Harbor follows the same process for boat retrieval, making the end of your day a relaxing experience as well. For those looking to enjoy a day fishing or a relaxing day on the water with friends and family, the Sugar Barge RV Resort & Marina rents fishing boats, pontoon and patio boats and kayaks. “The Sugar Barge RV Resort & Marina is the Delta’s premier location,” said Tracy Venable, Sugar Barge co-owner. sailing experience. “Boats book up quickly, so people should absolutely call in advance to reserve a boat to make sure one is available,” said Venable. According to Venable, their most popular boats to rent this time of year are the 17-foot Triumph Skiffs that are center console boats with 50 horsepower, bow mounted and foot controlled trolling motors in addition to the 15-foot aluminum boats with 15 horsepower motors. The Sugar Barge RV Resort & Marina also has a beautiful and clean RV resort with 114 grassy sites, covered boat slips and a restaurant that sits right over the water with beautiful views and special events. “We are absolutely the hidden gem in Contra Costa County,” said Venable. Reduce the risk of vehicle theft
A
ccording to the Insurance Information Institute, more than 700,000 motor vehicles
were reported stolen in the U.S. in 2015, and car theft is not exclusive to the states. Car thieves are often highly skilled, but car owners can take steps to reduce their risk of being victimized. ♦♦ Take the simple steps. Suggestions like keeping cars locked at all times and rolling up all windows before walking away from the car may sound simple, but they’re also effective. Drivers should avoid being careless no matter how briefly they plan to be away from their vehicles. Talented thieves need only a few seconds to steal a car, so don’t make it any easier for them than it already is. ♦♦ Park in well-lit areas. Well-lit parking lots may not prevent cars from being stolen, but such lots, especially ones monitored by security cameras, can be a strong deterrent to thieves who want to avoid having their crimes documented on camera.
♦♦ Park in public areas. Avoid parking in areas that are off the beaten path. While this might make for easy parking, such areas are also enticing to prospective car thieves worried about people witnessing their crimes. When parking at grocery stores, malls or other areas with large parking lots, park as close to pedestrian entrances as possible. Constant foot traffic can deter thieves from attempting to steal cars. ♦♦ Install an alarm system and antitheft device. Insurance companies often discount premiums for drivers whose vehicles have alarm systems and antitheft devices. Such systems and technology draw attention to vehicles when thieves attempt to steal them, and many thieves can easily spot which cars have antitheft devices they would prefer to avoid. ♦♦ Remove personal items and valuables from the vehicle. Automobiles should not be used as rolling storage facilities for various reasons. One such reason is that valuables may attract thieves. All drivers should make sure to remove all valuables when exiting their cars. – Courtesy Metro Creative

Motorcycle advancements for comfort, safety
M
Evolving technology strives to make the motorcycle experience more enjoyable and safer for riders.
any motorcycle enthusiasts love the feeling of being on the open road and in
touch with one’s surroundings. The style of a bike and the reputation of its manufacturer factor heavily into riders’ decisions when choosing bikes. Recent technological advancements have pushed motorcycle comfort and safety to the forefront. The following are some features for riders to consider when buying a motorcycle:
headlights, such as those produced by J.W. Speaker, are changing night riding. According to the American Automobile Association, adaptive headlights can make nighttime riding considerably safer. Such lights work when a bike leans into a curve and the onboard sensors calculate the angle at which the motorcycle enters the curve. The headlights then adjust the lighting array to illuminate areas where traditional headlights might prove inadequate.
Suspension Fully active suspension systems are impractical in motorcycles because of the components’ weight, but some manufacturers, such as Ducati and BMW, now offer semi-active suspension systems, which allow for a more stable ride and give riders greater control, particularly on rough terrain or uneven road conditions.
Liquid-cooled engines Photo courtesy of Metro Creative
While motorcycle fans may have their favorite features, safety and comfort remain at the top of many riders’ priority lists when choosing new motorcycles.
Cornering advanced braking systems Also known as lean-sensitive, anglesensitivity or race ABS, this technology employs data gathered from various sensors on the bike. The data is then transferred to a processing unit, which figures out the
optimal amount of pressure to apply to the brake pads as well as the proportional levels of braking force between the front and rear brakes. This is an important safety feature for any rider, regardless of his or her level of experience riding.

♦♦ Start with a tune-up. If it’s been awhile since your last tune-up, now’s the perfect time. A tune-up with a certified mechanic is a great way to be sure your car is operating at tip-top shape and to identify any small problems that could become larger as time goes on. Be honest with your mechanic about your driving experience, and ask plenty of questions. Your comments could help them identify a problem you both may have missed. ♦♦ Your tires need a maintenance plan as well. Like the rest of your car, your tires need maintenance throughout the season too. Checking your tires’ air pressure and tread depth is important during the winter, because tire pressure naturally drops in colder temperatures and a shallower tread depth will worsen the traction of your tires. To check your tire tread, all you need is a penny. Insert the penny into your tire tread upside down. If you can still see Lincoln’s head, your tires are worn and it’s time for them to be replaced. For more information, visit https://goo.gl/sLuxBU. ♦♦ Pack a winter preparedness kit. Accidents happen, and they’re an even bigger concern in the winter. That’s why it’s good to be prepared. Pack a bag with a blanket, flashlight, batteries, gloves, water, boots, snacks, a battery-powered cell phone charger and a first-aid kit. Any or all of these items will be invaluable if you become stranded. And to keep your car running in winter conditions, be sure your trunk includes an ice scraper, jumper cables and a bag of cat litter in case you need some impromptu traction. Plan ahead, and you’ll be ready for whatever the year’s most unique driving season has in store.

current model year cars and trucks, fall is a popular time to purchase a new vehicle. Whether this is your first purchase or not, there are more choices than ever when it comes to makes and models of vehicles and financing options for securing one. Before heading to the dealership, consider the following tips: ♦♦ Do your research. Online reviews and safety ratings can be helpful in choosing the car that fits your needs and lifestyle. This information will also come in handy when it comes time to negotiate. Consult reputable independent sources beforehand, like Consumer Reports and Edmunds, to compare vehicles you’re considering. While not as impartial, video reviews or “first drives” on YouTube can help give you a detailed view on vehicles before heading into a showroom. This research can also help you identify questions for your dealer or make you aware of features you can experience while on a test drive,

Do your homework and work within your budget to ensure you’re making the best decision. like lane departure warnings or selfparking technology. ♦♦ Know your budget. percent of your monthly budget. Use free resources, such as Ally Wallet Wise’s online car payment calculator, to help determine what is realistic for your budget. If you have a vehicle to trade or sell, estimate its value using tools like Kelly Blue Book. This will come in handy when deciding on trade-in options. ♦♦ Decide whether to buy or lease. Consider your lifestyle and budget when exploring financing or leasing options. Be sure to review your credit report, as your score can affect whether you’re approved for financing and the rate you’ll receive. Also, consider new options, such
as leasing used vehicles, which are now being offered through institutions like Ally Financial. Whether leasing or financing, be sure to know the details of your agreement. ♦♦ Test drive. Don’t forget to do some hands-on research. Test drive each of your top choices to determine your favorite. You should feel comfortable, confident and safe behind the wheel of the car you select. The longer the test drive, the better. Give yourself as much time as possible to notice the details and get a feel for the vehicle. Most dealers have a predetermined test route, but if you drive a variety of roads, this may not be enough. Ask your salesperson to go for a longer drive that includes highways and back roads. Before or after your test drive, explore the vehicle – touch every button, program the navigation, climb into the backseat and open the trunk or hatch. Remember that purchasing or leasing a car is a major financial step. Do your research to ensure you’re making the best decision for you.
