Our voters are the best, too!
The Best of Oakley Readers’ Choice awards give residents a chance to spotlight their favorite businesses, restaurants and recreation destinations. Every year, our readers answer several questions about their favorite places in Oakley, and 2024 was no different. As a thank-you, we’ve put the ballots in a random drawing to win a $50 gift certificate to the Black Bear Diner.
Winners are featured below. This year, we have one more question: What do you love most about the businesses in Oakley?

Big Break Recreational Area, nearby Big Break Marina gets rave reviews
Oakley’s Big Break Regional Shoreline has long been a popular spot for locals to show off to visitors, and this year proved no exception. The estuary won first place for both “best view” and “best place to show a visitor.” Part of the East Bay Regional Parks District, Big Break was once an asparagus farm. Now, visitors can still see asparagus plants sprouting all over the park amongst native flora.
Big Break lies in the zone where salty seawater meets snowmelt runoff from the Sierra Nevada, creating a distinct habitat supporting 70 species of birds and several mammals. On a clear day, the Sierra Nevada is visible across the Central Valley to the east, and marine traffic can be seen traveling the San Joaquin River to the north.
“People love to come and try to see the otters and other animals here in the wetlands,” said naturalist Aki Mckinzie.
Big Break has several trails that go by the shoreline and through the fields. There are bird and owl boxes to observe, along with a plethora of wildlife. Visitors can also fish in the Delta waters.
Mckinzie has been with Big Break for almost two years and said people love the park because of the safe, family atmosphere and activities. The park offers free events for the public, including crafts,
community campfires complete with s’mores, nature walks and field trips.
“People love the programming,” he said.
Big Break boasts the newest visitor center in the district. Built in 2012, the center hosts exhibits and activities for all ages. The hands-on educational tools illustrate how local plants and animals use the park, detailing the intricate web of life existing there. While some species use the shoreline as a stopping point during their migrations, others live there year-round, including river otters, beavers and turtles.
The Big Break Recreational Area offers a variety of ways for visitors to pass the time, from areas designed for picnics to scenic meadows that practically beg to have their photo taken. It boasts a small shaded amphitheater as well as boat and kayak launch facilities and a fishing pier. One of the most eye-catching elements of the Recreational Area is the Delta Discovery Experience. Dubbed an “interpretive landscape” by the East Bay Regional Park District, it uses a 1,200-square-foot interactive scale map of the Delta installed directly into the ground to give visitors the opportunity to see how water flows through the region. The map was designed, fabricated and installed by
Scientific Art Studio, based in Richmond. Those looking to enjoy stunning waterfront views can do so along the Big Break Regional Trail, which runs along the southern edge of Big Break through the Ironhouse Sanitary District. The trail provides access for hikers, bicyclists, and riders on horseback as well as dog lovers taking their companions on a walk. The trail also connects to the northern end of the Marsh Creek Regional Trail, providing adventurers with access to both Oakley and Brentwood. Following that trail leads to the Delta de Anza Regional Trail via West Cypress Road, providing another point of access to Oakley and Brentwood as well as Antioch, Pittsburg, and Bay Point.
Big Break Regional Shoreline is at 69 Big Break Road in Oakley.
The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the visitor center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. For more information about their programs and events, visit their website: www.ebparks.org/parks/bigbreak or call (510) 544-3050.

MOST COMMUNITY MINDED COMPANIES
Daub 4 Kids Bingo voted gold for
‘Most
Community-Minded’
Willy’s Bagels and Blends, Oakley location takes silver
When Oakley residents voted for the top two most community-minded companies, they chose two new winners this year: Daub 4 Kids Bingo and Willey’s Bagels and Blends.
GOLD Daub 4 Kids was founded in 2016 to support local youth sports programs. Founder Francine McMahon said she grew up in a baseball family and knew first-hand what it was like to volunteer for sports leagues and school sports programs.
“I did volunteer work all the time and then worked at a nonprofit that was a bingo program, so I decided to do one myself so we could support local schools and sports programs,” she said.
She opened the doors of Daub for Kids and the rest is history. Since its inception eight years ago, the organization has donated $775,000 to East County sport leagues and school sport programs. Funds are raised through bingo games hosted at their Oakley location five nights a week, and they support local teams through donations of money, equipment and uniforms.
McMahon said she was honored to be recognized by the community.
“This is huge,” she said. “I was very surprised we were acknowledged in this manner.”
On top of their regular donations, Daub 4 Kids also contributes two $5,000 scholarships to Freedom High School
seniors each year – one to a student in need, and one to a student whose family does not qualify for financial aid. They also make a $30,000 donation to the East County Diehards baseball and softball organization to pay for a trip to either the College World Series or Cooperstown Dreams Park -- a week-long summer camp of games and skills drills.
“We are just here to support the local schools and sports programs,” McMahon said.
Daub 4 Kids Bingo is at 2107 Main St., Oakley. For more information, call 925-726-6211 or visit www.facebook. com/daub4kidsbingo.
SILVER Willey’s Bagels and Blends opened its Oakley location in March, and owner Scott Richardson said things are going well. The organization has a history of community support at its Brentwood locations and Richardson said Willey’s hopes to become an integral part of the Oakley community.
“We are there to serve the community,” he said. “We don’t just make bagels, we want to make a difference.”
For 15 years, Willey’s has collaborated with local nonprofits to run a toy drive benefiting local kids. They also distribute tags from local youth, each with a need and a wish, to their customers, who return the tags with the items requested. Those packages are then hand-delivered all over
East County by Christmas. Richardson said he looks forward to expanding that tradition into Oakley through his new location.
Willey’s also works with Kaleidoscope Cancer Connection to provide turkeys for local families each Thanksgiving. Richardson lost his mom to cancer 10 years ago, and wants to help other families suffering from a cancer diagnosis though Kaleidoscope, a nonprofit that supports cancer patients and their families.
“My mom was the heart and soul of the business and the driving force behind our community work,” he said. “Our heart in the community exists because that was our mission when we started Willey’s, thanks to her.”
Willey’s also donates day-old bagels to local churches and food banks to feed the hungry.
As part of its culture, Willey’s is always closely tied to its local high school campus. Richardson said most of the employees at his Oakley location are students or alumni of Freedom High School in Oakley, which means they know the community well. He said he plans to set up a scholarship at Freedom to be awarded to the senior with the most community-service hours each year.
Willeys Bagels and Blends is at 2170 Main St., Oakley. For more information, call 925-513-5215 or visit www. willysbagels.com/oakley.

BEST NON PROFITS
Rotary Club of Oakley is voted the gold medal for ‘Best Nonprofit’
The Improved Order of Red Men and the Degree of Pocahontas brings home the Silver Award
GOLD The Rotary Club of Oakley brought home gold once again in this year’s Best of Oakley for Best Nonprofit. It’s no surprise when considering the scope of the club’s work in the community. From feeding the hungry to supporting local schools to running a toy drive during the holidays, Rotary members are working hard to live up to their motto of “service before self.”
Club President Aaron Meadows said the award was gratifying. “This means we are recognized by the community and out in the community doing good work,” he said.
Rotary members strive to promote service, integrity, peace and understanding, while benefiting people in the local community.
Oakley’s Rotary was chartered in May 2019 and has grown to include 30 members. They manage food distribution for Friends of Oakley, and recently completed a project painting maps of the United States at all the elementary schools in the Oakley and Knightsen school districts. The club runs a large toy drive each December, collecting and distributing toys to local children. Members participate in roadside cleanup throughout Oakley, and they support local restaurants through
monthly dine-out events. They also collaborate with the Friends of the Oakley Library to raise money for the city to build a new library.
Members meet weekly, on Thursdays at 7:30 a.m., for breakfast at Black Bear Diner in Oakley. Prospective members are invited to attend a meeting and see the club in action. For more information, visit www.rotaryclubofoakley.com.
SILVER Taking the silver medal in the Best Nonprofit category is the Improved Order of Red Men and the Degree of Pocahontas. This pair of clubs – one for men, the other for women – has been serving East County since 1934. As a non-profit fraternal organization devoted to inspiring a greater love for the United States and the principles of American liberty, it supports various programs.
According to its website, the fraternity traces its origins to the American Revolution and the Sons of Liberty, specifically the Boston Tea Party, when colonists dressed as Native Americans dumped tea into the harbor to protest British taxes. Now the national organization patterns itself after the Iroquois Confederacy and its democratic governing body.
Member Matthew Tate says the
Oakley chapter gives scholarships to local high school students, raises funds to support the Oakley Police Department through equipment donation, hosts pancake breakfasts to raise funds for community projects and supplies its hall on Main Street at minimal cost for local food distribution.
The Degree of Pocahontas has its own list of good works. The women raise money and donate to the Martinez Veterans Hospital and local women’s shelters. They host a holiday boutique each year and donate the proceeds to local groups. Last year’s donation went to the Oakley Veterans Group to support their community work. The women also help people dispose of their damaged American flags through a ceremony recognizing the flag’s history and importance.
Tate said while the recognition means a great deal to him and his fellow members, he hopes it will create an increased interest in the group, leading to more members.
“Like a lot of fraternal organizations across the country, our membership is declining,” said Tate said. “We would like to see some more faces.” For more information, email Redmenhall@gmail.com or visit www.redmen.org.

Koda Dog Park awarded two gold medals
The City of Oakley won two categories with their popular Koda Dog Park: Best Government Spending – for new shade structures – and Best Place to Walk a Dog
Koda Dog Park is located next to the Nunn-Wilson Family Park at the intersection of Laurel and Brown roads. Oakley’s Director of Public Works Kevin Rohani said the dog park is a popular destination for residents and visitors to bring their dogs for exercise and play. Residents soon noted one thing was lacking.
“One of the more frequent requests coming from the community was for shade to be installed at this park, specifically within the off-leash areas that people frequent while their dogs play, as the trees planted in the park were young and slow growing,” Rohani said.
He noted the shade structures are composed of large, high-grade sail shades. They were completed earlier this year, and the project cost about $150,000.
Koda Dog Park was named after a beloved Oakley police dog who served with Officer Josh Del Prado beginning in 2017. Koda retired from the department in 2020, much to the disappointment of his fans. When the city conducted outreach in 2018 to name the dog park,
“Koda Dog Park” was the leading votegetter by a wide margin, according to a city staff report.
Oakley City Councilmember George Fuller said the dog park is an invaluable facility for the city, providing recreational space for families and their beloved pets.
In the search for Best Historic Building, Oakley residents named the one housing Oakley’ Bistro Punahele Tonnelier as their favorite. The historic building was recently restored and is home to a café serving American fare with French and Hawaiian influences.
The restoration began when owners Sydney and Stephane Tonnelier were granted a $75,000 loan through Oakley’s downtown revitalization project to fix up the building and open a restaurant.
The little brick building at 3530 Main St. has seen many owners in its 112 years. As part of the downtown revitalization, the structure was cut in half to make room for the widened street, and a new section was added to the rear. During the restoration, the building’s original back windows were installed on the wall separating the kitchen and dining areas. The rest of the renovations were less invasive, and guests can enjoy the historic atmosphere in modern comfort.
Oakley residents loved hearing
that Chrome Coffee opened a location in Oakley and voted that piece of information Best News of the year
Chrome had locations in Brentwood and Antioch, and the Chrome Coffee trailer is a popular addition to events all over East County. Owner Moriah Mesina said an Oakley location was a natural next step.
“We are excited to serve the community,” she said. “We have a lot of people who come in to work or meet someone and we have been excited to see people show up. We want to be part of the community and look forward to staying busy and keeping it growing.”
Mesina said she has a passion for coffee and for East County, where she grew up. She went through Brentwood schools and graduated from Liberty High School class of 2015. Now, she said she is working to bring quality coffee, tea and pastries to her community.
One thing setting her Oakley location apart from the others is an expanded food menu. While all her shops have pastries, her Oakley location is debuting a new food line including sandwiches, salads and more, she said.
Chrome coffee is at 3350 Main St. in Oakley. For more information, visit www. chromecoffeeco.com.
