Brentwood residents love to spend time in their evolving downtown area. With shopping, restaurants, a park, seasonal events and now a theater, the downtown area has more to recommend it than ever.

Peter Jacoway is president of the Downtown Brentwood Coalition, a group largely responsible for the continued revitalization of the historic downtown area. Composed of the area’s business owners, the group works on beautification projects to attract shoppers and diners.

“We have worked diligently on making historic downtown Brentwood a destination,” Jacoway said. “It’s taken a lot of really good, smart entrepreneurs bringing good quality business into downtown. We have events, a clean downtown, great businesses and they all result in a great downtown and a happy place.”

A recent addition to downtown is The Delta theater, a two-screen movie theater whose refurbished interior harkens back to the mid-20th century, with reclining seats and modern technology.

Jacoway said plans are underway to continue improving the area in the new year.

“I grew up in this downtown and I’ve seen it change drastically,” he said. “We want to continue the beautification, revitalization and transformation so we can make it even better.”

Silver: Brentwood Library

Part of Brentwood’s downtown, the current Library building opened in 2018 and quickly became a popular gathering spot. The building boasts outdoor seating areas, two floors of books, study rooms, a children’s area and a café.

Library spokesperson Andrea Freyler said the building serves as a community hub with something for everyone.

“Who doesn’t want to come downtown and see this beautiful building?” she said. “Who doesn’t want to go to the park across the street and come to the library and get ice cream and enjoy the whole downtown experience Brentwood has to offer?”

Brentwood’s library is open six days a week, and staff are ready to welcome all visitors. The library is at 104 Oak St., Brentwood.

Gold: Concerts in the Park

Also part of the downtown entertainment are Brentwood’s free Concerts in the Park. On Friday nights during the summer, the city puts on a range of family-friendly concerts right in City Park. Director of Parks and Recreation Bruce Mulder said the concerts are one of the city’s “most popular events.”

“We bring in attendance of 1,5003,000 per concert, depending on the band and the weather, every Friday in the summer,” Mulder said. “The concerts have been a staple of the city for years and help bring vibrance to the downtown. People like to go get a bite to eat while they’re down there, and it’s a great environment.”

The city receives almost 200 applications from bands to play each year, and carefully sifts through their options. While some bands are invited back for a repeat performance, most weeks showcase a new band, and organizers try to bring in different genres of music to satisfy all tastes.

Silver: Farmers Market

Also located downtown is the Brentwood Farmers Market, open every Saturday yearround, rain or shine. This event brings fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, seafood, snacks, and all kinds of treats to downtown. Visitors can purchase hot coffee, warm doughnuts and other goodies to enjoy as they stroll two blocks of booths and food carts.

Gold: Library

Brentwood residents love spending time at their library, and thanks to the city, they get an extra day each week to do so. Contra Costa County funds its libraries to

allow 40 hours of staffing each week, but the Brentwood City Council allocates funds for an additional 12 hours. This allows the library to open six days each week, instead of five, with longer hours on two days.

Brentwood City Manager Tim Ogden said the city funds $127,000 annually for staffing, as well as $11,000 for technology equipment.

“We love our library as a gem in our downtown, and the residents do too,” Ogden said.

Library spokesperson Andrea Freyler said there is programming for all ages at the library, from infants to seniors, including those with physical or developmental disabilities.

“We want everyone to feel welcome and included,” she said.

Silver: Sand Creek Extension

Brentwood residents are excited about the Sand Creek Road extension filling an infrastructural gap in the local transportation network linking Brentwood and Antioch. After many delays, it will finally be complete this year, opening Sand Creek Road to Heidorn Ranch Road and further west to Antioch.

Consistent with the city’s General Plan, the extension project was originally supposed to be built with the Bridle Gate project, a proposed housing development west of the Highway 4/Sand Creek Road interchange. When the development was denied by the City Council in 2021, the city initiated construction of the first two lanes, recognizing the need for the road due to other planned projects, like Costco. With the recent approval of Bridle Gate, the developer will finish out construction of the two outer lanes of Sand Creek Road once development starts.

The $12 million project is being managed by the city, and will be open in early January 2025. City Manager Tim Ogden said it will help ease traffic congestion to the north on Lone Tree Way.

“It will further enable development in the Innovation Center at Brentwood with Costco construction underway, and now planned to open in March 2025,” he said.

The Rotary Club of Brentwood began its tradition of serving others in 1949, and recently celebrated 75 years of community service. The club runs multiple programs to help people in need, from performing light chores around the house to providing local children with school supplies to gathering food and gifts during the holidays. Brentwood Rotary president Oscar Peccorini said Rotarians are a “fun group of business owners, retired individuals and residents focused on giving back to the community through service above self.”

Silver: Tie between Working Wonders and Be Exceptional

Working Wonders

Founded in 2016, Working Wonders provides work-related training through business connections and partnerships for adults with developmental disabilities. President Matt Schwab said the idea for Working Wonders came to him when his son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of 2.

“At that point, we were like a lot of parents who receive that diagnosis, trying to figure out what his future would be like

and how to reshape our family experience,” Schwab said.

Through conversations with his wife and other parents in similar situations, the idea of training adults with developmental disabilities was conceived and eventually became Working Wonders.

Schwab said staff help serve their clients by opening doors to them through real-world training, and by helping them find their passion. Clients can train in local restaurants and other businesses, supporting themselves and being part of the community.

“We are really proud of the work training,” Schwab said. “We are looking at ‘big picture’ as they become adults and their families get older, so they become self-sufficient. We want to set a path for them and allow them the opportunity to take that path.”

Be Exceptional

Be Exceptional is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide recreational classes and social events for people facing developmental, physical, and emotional challenges. Director Lynda Green said the organization provides programs to all ages and all abilities, “from infant programs, all the way up to adults with special needs.”

Be Exceptional recently relocated from

Antioch to Brentwood. It offers classes in art, skateboarding, theater, and other subjects through the recreation departments of Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood. In addition to the recreational classes, Be Exceptional also hosts several dances each year, including one at Halloween, and a formal prom in the spring.

Green said being recognized by the community as a Best of Brentwood nonprofit means they will be able to keep providing services to families.

“We are so appreciative of the recognition,” she said. “The biggest misconception about us is that we are just for students with special needs, but our classes are inclusion-based and we can take anyone.”

Brentwood residents love to spend time walking the paved Marsh Creek Regional Trail which winds along its namesake from Vineyard Parkway in the south to the Big Break Regional Trail in the north which takes you to the shorline in Oakley.

Maintained by the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD), there are plans in the works to extend the trail three miles further south to Round Valley Regional Preserve. EBPRD Supervising Naturalist Wyatt Moore said his district is working with state and local agencies to extend the trail.

“The preliminary engineering study was completed and filed,” he said. “The park district will continue to partner with California State Parks and seek grant funding to develop the paved regional trail. That will cost about $5.5 million.”

Moore noted the trail is a popular spot for people to walk, run, ride bikes and walk dogs. People can also see native flora and fauna, including oak trees, river otters, and birds.

“We work hard to maintain the quality of the water and ensure people behave responsibly along the trail and are not littering,” Moore said.

Silver: Creekside Park

Built in 1994, Brentwood’s Creekside Park has it all: walking paths shaded by tall trees, a large playground, a disc golf course, restrooms and tennis, pickleball and basketball courts.

The park is also adjacent to the Marsh Creek Trail, making it an excellent spot to go for a walk.

“It’s one of our most popular parks,” said Parks and Recreation Director Bruce Mulder. “We get a lot of positive feedback.”

The playground equipment has been replaced since the park was built, and additions – like the pickleball courts, restrooms and disc golf – have been well received by Brentwood residents. Pedestrians at the park can choose to follow the sidewalk loop that circles the park, or merge right onto the larger Marsh Creek Trail.

Gold: Veterans Park

Brentwood residents love their parks and had many options to choose from in this category. One park stood above the rest: Veterans Park, located on Balfour in southern Brentwood.

“This is a very popular park,” said Parks and Recreation Director Bruce Mulder. “We have a large picnic area, bocce ball courts, a

volleyball court, the skatepark, the aquatic facility, the senior center, and a recently renovated playground area, along with the universal playground.”

The universal playground, or all-abilities playground, was the result of a collaboration between the defunct Special Kids Foundation and the city. Working together, they built an enclosed, accessible playground appropriate for all children, including those with physical or developmental disabilities.

The park also hosts the city’s annual Veterans Day event and Veterans Banner Program, along with many local families’ events.

“The picnic shelter is a popular choice for family get-togethers all summer long,” said Mulder. “Families come together to celebrate birthdays and reunions, and the kids can play at the park or swim at the pool.”

Coming in at second place was City Park, located in the heart of downtown Brentwood between the library and city hall. One of the town’s original parks, it’s gone through a transformation since it was first built, and now includes a playground, concert venue, splash pad, gazebo and large trees.

“It’s an event venue and gathering place for many celebrations,” said Mulder. “Organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Coalition use it, as well as other groups.”

Gold: Dirk Zeigler

Dirk Zeigler has a hand in many of Brentwood’s affairs and was recognized by his community for his giving spirit. A former planning commission member and current Rotarian, Zeigler said he enjoys “pitching in” where needed.

“When you give back to others who are maybe not as fortunate as you, or put a smile on someone’s face because you helped them or provided them with something, it feels good,” Zeigler said.

Zeigler supports his community through his work in the Rotary Club of Brentwood, the Brentwood Regional Community Chest and Brentwood Strong, all local nonprofits that support people in East County. Zeigler has been a Rotarian since 2006 and serves on many of the group’s committees. Through Rotary, he helps seniors with light chores around the house once a month for free, partners with local organizations during the holidays to provide meals, clothing and gifts to needy families, and flips pancakes anytime a school asks for help during an event. He also helps local food banks with food distribution and lends a hand at Marsh Creek cleanups.

Zeigler said he caught the volunteer bug when he was a young adult in the Navy and signed up to participate in a mentorship program. He would play games with kids who came onto the base where he was stationed and enjoyed it. He also dressed up as Santa and the Easter Bunny at a battered women’s shelter his sister ran in Rhode Island. A longtime Brentwood resident, he owns Zeigler Insurance and Financial Services with his wife and continues his tradition of giving back by serving the local community.

Yvette Gomez co-owns Chill Tea and Coffee with her husband, Sal Gomez. She said she was “shocked, humbled and grateful” for the recognition by the community.

“We just want to provide a welcoming space for our community and give back,” Gomez said. “We love being part of the community. We have taken every curve ball all businesses have had to face, and we just put our heads down and work and give love to our customers.”

Since her first Chill location opened in 2017, Gomez has used her business to support the community. Their first project was collecting donations for the victims of wildfires in Napa and Sonoma counties, which they delivered to displaced residents themselves. They have continued to partner with Contra Costa Fire Protection District and Brentwood Police Department to fill needs in the community. Gomez is active with the Brentwood Police Activities League, and she created Shop and Chill events to give vendors without storefronts a place to showcase their goods. She partners with local schools for fundraisers and helps sponsor the Helping One Woman (HOW) events. One of the projects closest to her heart is the specia-needs coffee cart at Adams Middle School.

“Both Sal and I visit and bring coffee supplies so the special-needs class can go out and sell coffee to teachers,” Gomez said. “So those kids can go out and learn to sell coffee and make drinks and handle money.”

Gomez said she hopes to continue giving back to the community, while providing a gathering place where her customers can enjoy their hand-poured coffee and teas.

East County coffee enthusiasts love Dutch Bros coffee and the way the company supports the local community. Franchise owner Courtney Shaffer said community work is close to her heart.

“We want to do things within our community to make it stronger and better for the people who live here,” Shaffer said. “Our main focus is youth athletes and youth sports.”

Shaffer, who owns shops in Oakley and Brentwood, said her franchise sponsors local sports leagues, as well as teams and booster clubs at the three high schools in Brentwood and Oakley. They donate coffee for teacher appreciation events, offer gift cards and gift baskets to fundraisers and raffles, and sponsor kids’ activities at local events.

Shaffer’s business also supports the Brentwood Community Chest and Friends of Oakley, helping to gather food and supplies during the holidays. They participate in the Hometown Halloween in downtown Brentwood each October, and sponsor a tree in Brentwood’s Deck the Park tree decorating contest each December.

“We are trying to do good within the community,” Shaffer said. “We are opening a couple more stores and with every store we open, we are able to provide jobs within the community and it gives us the opportunity to give back more.”
