Biking For A Worthy Cause

by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Brentwood is starting 2019 in fine financial health, according to the city’s year-end comprehensive annual report. The city’s general fund ended the year with $28.6 million (a $5.2 million increase over last year) after factoring in $46,550,688 in actual 2017-2018 revenues (about $2 million more than expected) and $48,290,941 in actual expenditures (about $5.5 million less than anticipated). “The general fund had a strong year,” said Christine Andrews, assistant director of finance and information systems. 2019: A new year, some new laws by Aly Brown Staff Writer

Residents of East County and the world over celebrated the shift from 2018 to 2019 this week, and with the new year came some new laws. Below is a sampling of changes California citizens can expect.

Brewing up a fundraiser On Dec. 15, Yvette Gomez, owner of Chill Tea & Coffee, and her staff presented Briana Taylor of the American Red Cross with a donation check for the fire victims of Butte County. Donations collected at the shop, donated tips from the staff and proceeds from Chill’s own “Jasper Cocoa” offered at the Brentwood’s holiday parade came out to $1,400. A special thanks goes out to Captain Robert Ruddick and East Contra Costa Fire Protection

District (ECCFPD) Fire Board President Brian Oftedal who helped coordinate and connect Chill Tea and Coffee with the American Red Cross. The team would also like to recognize Iliana, Gabby, Alex and Rebecca (Chill staff) who were generous in volunteering their time and contributing toward this donation. “We have the best customers here at Chill,” said owner Yvette Gomez. “And we’re happy to report that their generosity will go to a good cause.”

Senior center celebrates decade of service by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

The Brentwood Senior Activity Center is almost 10 years old, and just days after ringing in the new year, the area’s seniors will prepare for another celebration. The center, located on Griffith Lane, has been a bustling, energetic place for seniors of all ages since 2009 – thanks to the Brentwood Senior Citizens Club’s (BSCC) efforts. The community will honor its 10-year anniversary Jan. 9. “The club worked very diligently to fundraise money and advocate to the city council to have the senior center built,” explained Olivia Alvarez, City of Brentwood recreation supervisor. “The club was very instrumental in getting the ball rolling.” Founded in 2004, the BSCC became incorporated and active with about 200 members. Though it began as a small alliance of Brentwood residents in search of fellowship and outreach opportunities, the group has since expanded to include over 1,300 members, with almost daily activities and many popular events, like the fifth annual New Year’s Eve in Paris, celebrated this week. “The club is a nonprofit that fundraises to improve the quality of life of seniors in the Brentwood community,” Alvarez said. “Through their fundraising efforts, they reduce the cost of activities and social functions for seniors. They also have a scholarship program that they offer to seniors to take trips, to participate in educational classes or attend

Members of the Brentwood Senior Citizens Club and their guests enjoy the fifth annual New Year’s Eve in Paris celebration at the Brentwood Community Center. special events.” The senior activity center is a multifunctioning facility that houses not only the BSCC but other collaboratives such as C.C. Cafe, a county program that provides lunches to seniors, and Liberty Adult Education Program, which offers classes to seniors in a wide range of subjects. The BSCC also uses the building to work with Meals on Wheels, Senior Outreach Services, John Muir Health Senior Services and its many other partners to help sustain services provided to seniors in the community. Alvarez has managed the senior activity center since it opened. She describes herself as the city’s liaison to the BSCC Board of Directors, ensuring that the club meets all legal requirements and getting them any support they need from the city. She feels the success

of the center has been due to the staff and the city, who have worked hard to be proactive and responsive, listening to what the community needs. “Within the last decade, we have seen a growth in the number of seniors that are attracted to our services and center. We are experiencing what we call the ‘silver tsunami,’” Alvarez said. “We have all the baby boomers who are retiring, and these seniors are active and want to engage and are outgoing. It’s been wonderful to see how the dynamics have changed in our programing and our events. Because we are truly the only full-fledged senior center in East County, we are drawing seniors from all over the area.” With the club’s growing membership, there is a constant influx of talent and indi-

viduals offering their services to give back to the community. Alvarez added that the center’s offerings evolve each year to better fit the needs of its members, and the members have shown their appreciation by their attendance and continued participation. “I think it’s important that seniors have a place to go,” said Judy Griek, BSCC member since 2007, and the club’s treasurer since 2013. “It’s a welcoming and inclusive environment. Seniors are fun, and we want to get out and have a good time, and this is a good way to do it.” Griek is especially proud of the scholarship program the club sponsors, enabling seniors with limited incomes to have experiences outside their normal activities. Griek’s fellow club member, June Peters, agrees. “I really appreciate the friendships and meeting people my own age,” Peters said. “(Being part of this) takes you out of solitary. There’s a place to go and always someone to talk to.” A celebration of the senior activity center’s 10-year anniversary will be held there Jan. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. The center is located at 193 Griffith Lane, in Brentwood. Festivities will include a champagne toast, local dignitaries and a reflection of the center’s success with the community and its accomplishments over the last decade. Public meetings of the BSCC are held at the senior activity center on the first and second Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. For more information, call 925-516-5380. To comment, visit www.thepress.net

Wishing you peace, joy in 2019 Happy New Year, everyone! Some of us remember reading the George Orwell novel, “1984,” back in school. I recall thinking, “Boy, that’s really a long way away.” Now we are turning the page on 2019! This past year Senior has been a whirlwind orner of news, but sadly a lot of it wasn’t good. Every New Year’s Eve brings optimism and a clean slate, so once again I hope that this coming year will bring the kind of change that will Marla heal any wounds and Luckhardt bring joy to those that need it the most. Grandpa and I were watching “Sunday Morning” with Jane Pauley. They had the In Memorium that a lot of shows play at the end of every year. Celebrities and other famous people who have passed away in 2018 were featured. There were a lot! We found ourselves saying, “Oh I didn’t know she died. How sad.” And it was. And then we move on. Like our own lives, we have lost people we’ve loved, but they are still with us in our hearts and in our dreams. I am not one for New Year’s resolutions. Oh yes, I looked at my treadmill this morning and vowed to start using it daily, and perhaps this

C

year I will do that, but I won’t promise. I’ve made peace with my scale and will definitely not be its slave in 2019. There will be no more reasons to justify taking a day to sit on the couch in my sweats with my blanket and my game tablet or staying up watching television until 2 a.m. and then sleeping in until 9 or 10. I make no excuses for having leftovers that I ate for dinner at 4 o’clock the day before for breakfast or chocolate before noon. No longer will I hide the fact that I blast Beatles music on my car Sirius

radio and sing at the top of my lungs hoping the car next to me doesn’t think there’s a crazy woman driving down the street. In the new year I will be silly – very, very silly. Anytime I feel like crying, I will without saying “I am sorry,” but I will try to substitute those tears with laughter. I will continue to reach out to my family and friends in the hopes of spending time with them but will not run after those who do not wish to be caught. Love and friendship are a two-way street. I need to work on that philosophy and

Sing in the new year

accept it. Or not. If these are resolutions, then I am all in. For my loved ones and my dear readers, I hope this year you sing even if it’s off key, you dance even if you have two left feet, you tell lots of jokes even if they are corny, you give and get tons of hugs and that we all get happiness, good health, tons of love and most of all PEACE! Marla Luckhardt is a Brentwood resident who works with senior care and advocacy groups. Email her at marla2054@ aol.com.

ing in 2019 with the Brentwood Community Chorus – a New Year’s resolution that’s sure to be successful. Singing improves your physical, mental and emotional health and is great fun as well. The Brentwood Community Chorus, under the direction of Susan Stuart, meets Tuesdays, 7 to 9 p.m., beginning Jan. 8, at Brentwood Community United Methodist Church (809 Second St., Brentwood). There is no audition and reading music is not necessary, although you must be able to match pitch. The registration fee is $50. Additional information and a registration form may be obtained at www. Reward offered for missing DB pet When Patsy Collins’ 18-year-old pan Chihuahua, Cha Chi, went missing on Dec. 22, the Discovery Bay resident was optimistic her pet would soon be found. Now after nearly two weeks with no sign of the dog, Collins is still doing her best to remain positive. “I had a dog once, a boxer, that disappeared for four months before we found him, so I am still hopeful,” she said. “But (Cha Chi) is old, so I am worried.” Cha Chi took off last month when he was let out around 2 a.m. during an

Children’s choir offers a future with education

T

he African Children’s Choir brought Antioch Church Family to life with the traditional music, drumming and dancing of Uganda as performed by the country’s young citizens who were on tour through the U.S. and Canadian West Coast. As part of the program, which aims to end cycles of poverty by offering education, 8- to 10-year-old children are selected to perform with the choir for only one tour and then return to Uganda to receive a guaranteed education until they graduate from college. Tour leaders included volunteers and also former African Children’s Choir singers who shared how the choir changed their lives. To view videos of the event, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia

You are probably familiar with how income tax withholding works from your payroll. You make an election with your payroll department and a certain amount of taxes are withheld from each paycheck which goes towards your federal and state tax bills in April. There is something similar in real estate transactions for the state income tax portion but most people aren’t aware of it because most transactions are exempt. It’s basically the same idea as your payroll withholding. If you are likely to pay state income taxes on the sale of your home, California expects you ask the title company to withhold that estimated amount from the sale at close of escrow and forward to the Franchise Tax Board on your behalf. There are several big exceptions to the withholding requirement that cover most residential sellers: 1. The property you are selling was your primary residence for at least two out of the last five years. 2. You last used it as your primary residence, even if the use was for less than 2 years. 3. You had

no gain or you had a loss on the property. In addition to these, there are more exemptions regarding sales by corporations, involuntary sales, tax-exempt entities, etc. If you can’t qualify for one of the exceptions, then you are supposed to do the withholding. They do give you several options. If you are an individual (meaning not a corporation), you can estimate your gain on IRS Form 593-E and then withhold 12.3% of that gain. Or you can just withhold 3.33% of the sales price if you don’t know all the specifics or your depreciation, basis, etc.. If you withheld more than your actual taxes owed, you should be entitled to a refund of that amount. For more information, do an Internet search for IRS Form 593. THIS ARTICLE IS NOT TAX ADVICE. PLEASE CONSULT A TAX PROESSIONAL. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Voted “Best of Brentwood” multiple times. Riding into the new year This year Brentwood Bikes and Brews gave back to the community by donating 35 bikes and accessories. All the money was raised through Brentwood Bikes and Brews’ three sold-out bike-riding events held in 2018. There was also the opportunity to help out Brentwood PAL monetarily and with bikes for the Shop With A Cop event. This could not have been possible without those who attended the events and local businesses: Vine & Grain, Imperiale Beer Cafe, Crown & Crow, Tailgaters, Sand Creek Pub, Extreme Pizza, Harvest Park Bowl, Mannheim Social Club, Markstein Beverage, Schwinn City Brentwood, Big House Beans, Campos Winery, Aladinos Pizza, Starry Nite Studios and Brentwood PAL.

Students discuss New Year's with poetry, prose One Day at A Time’s Youth Expression Project (YEP) is helping teach students how to express themselves concerning issues they feel are important and providing them a platform from which to be seen and

heard. YEP’s Writing and Art Workshops will run for 10 weeks. The Press will publish the written work every other week. The Delta Art Gallery will host an upcom-

ing show for the artwork. Thanks to the Zellerbach and Kaiser Foundations for funding these workshops. The following are works written by students with Spanish translation.

A broken promise… It’s not what it looks like By Julienne New Year’s resolutions are useless, honestly. Like you would say, “I will work out every day,” or “I’ll be more positive.” Do you keep them though? Do you really do them every day? If you said yes, then you are just lying or you had a person forc-

ing you every day to do them. I remember I promised to be more open. Guess where I am now? Still having social anxiety and being really picky to people. Keeping promises/ resolutions is fine, but don’t punish yourself if you miss one day… YOU HAVE THE WHOLE YEAR!

New Year’s starts today

El Nuevo Año New year, new me empieza hoy

By Donny Lewis Jr. My new year’s resolution does not start next year. It starts today. Each day I strive to make the present better than my past, while living each day as if it’s my last. I intend to improve myself and fortify my bonds with treasured friends. Most importantly, I will respect the fact that each goal has a process that needs to be followed in order to be obtained. For positive change does not come instantly. It comes with time and consistency.

By Franny Martel Clothes protect me from the pain of life. As each piece of clothing falls off, it represents how I feel. Hurt, doubt, disbelief spill over me. I look at myself and don’t recognize myself anymore. 2018 was a year that was an endless rollercoaster of emotions and experiences. A girl with a cracked heart went into the year with a dream but by being young and naïve, one person just ruined it all for me. That has affected my view of love and of myself and it took a toll on everything I did. Coming to the end of the year, my last piece of clothing is hope which is hanging by a thin string. It’s the only thing that is reminding me of me. In 2019 I want to be genuinely happy, so content with myself that I leave everything in the past and experience freedom and total responsibility. All I hope for is not to be naked to the old me.

OBITUARIES Evelyn ‘Penny’ Giacomini

Byron Lester Hagar

Oct. 15, 1929 – Dec. 8, 2018 Byron Lester Hagar, age 89, peacefully passed on to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Dec. 8. He was surrounded by his family and close friends. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia Hagar; daughter, Catherine (William) Houf; son, Gil (Debbie) Hagar; and two grandsons, Matthew (Megan) Hagar and Kristopher Hagar. He is also survived by his loyal dog, Smokey; a niece, Sabrina Hagar; a nephew, Doug (Martha) Hagar; two great-nieces, Hillary Hagar and Hanna (Johnathan) Goode; one great-great-niece, Elise Grace Goode; and many cousins. Byron was born in Oil Center, Oklahoma, and moved with his family to Antioch, California, at the age of 15. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Glover Hagar and Ofa Pearl (Davis) Hagar, his fraternal twin, Randall Hagar and his brother, Merle Hagar. Byron joined the Marine Corps and proudly served from 1947 to 1951. In 1952, he met and married his wife, Virginia Lea Moorman of Oakland, California. After being discharged from the Marines, Byron worked at his father’s plumbing shop in Antioch. Then he later worked for Los Medanos Plumbing in Pittsburg and retired from the Plumbers & Steam Fitters Union Local 159 in 1990 after 36 years. In addition to his family and the Lord, Byron loved fishing, playing bocce ball

and Pedro, he and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Oklahoma Sooners fan. He also loved serving in the Marines and was commandant for the Delta Diablo Detachment 1155 Marine Corps League. He was also a member of the IOOF (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) for over 65 years. Services, followed by a reception, will be held to honor Byron on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at 11 a.m., at Golden Hills Community Church, 2401 Shady Willow Lane, in Brentwood. A military burial will take place at 12:30 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, California. and memories. Penny is survived by her husband of 25 years, Donald; her son, Gary (Martha), and daughter, Debra; grandchildren, Corinne, Bryan and Zackary; and greatgrandchildren, Shane Weeck and Ben Martinez. She also leaves stepsons, Kevin (Cheryl), John (Laurie) and Tim (Jenny); and step-grandchildren, Katie, Anna, Evan, Sarah, Emma, Quinn and Mitchell. Penny was rich in family and friends, as she also leaves behind a loving uncle, sisters, brothers-in-law, brothers, sisters-inlaw, nieces, nephews and many friends who will miss her greatly. A memorial mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary with the time and date yet to be determined.

Evelyn (known by many as Penny) Giacomini passed away after a valiant fight against pneumonia on Dec. 28. Faith and family were the cornerstone of Penny’s life. She was happiest when spending time with family and friends. Penny was an inspiration to those who met her and cared about those she met. She encouraged so many in their aspirations and dreams. She gave so much to so many; to have known her was to have loved her. Though we will miss her terribly, she’ll forever remain close in our hearts

Understanding the new Press subscription model There has been a lot of talk and questions about some of the changes happening here at The Press, so I wanted to clarify a few things. First of all, The Press papers, which include the Brentwood, Oakley and Discovery Bay publications, are ditorial free community newspapers and the intent is for them to remain free newspapers. What we are asking is for you to let us know how you want it delivered. The Press papers are produced by local community residents, and the stories are about and written for the benefit of our communities. With that being said, we are simply

E

Congratulations to Lions football

Editor: Regarding the Liberty Union High School varsity football players who made it to the state championship game in Los Angeles and won 19-17 – job well done, and I would like to express my feelings to say that I believe the City of Brentwood did not honor them in a fashion that did them justice. The boys and coaches put forth a lot of dedication, hard work and determination to accomplish such a feat, and what an honor to make it to the state championships and win. Too bad the city did not advertise in a fashionable manner about the celebration at the park on Wednesday, Dec. 19, because many of us are not on social media and were not aware of the celebration. I heard the lighting was very bad and hard to see the players and coaches. Fliers should have been posted throughout the city for people

asking for delivery costs. So let us know: how would you like your news delivered? If you would like the paper delivered to your home every week, then sign up! It’s only $20 a year – less than 39 cents a week. There is also an online option for $20 a year. We also offer a bundled package for $30 a year, where you can have the paper delivered to your home each week and enjoy unlimited digital access to our daily pushes, the breaking news, slideshows, videos and all of our local stories online, 24/7. But if you don’t want to pay for delivery to your home, you can still read it for free online with The ePress edition – our online page-turning software that allows you to see all the news we print in the paper each week and enjoy our exciting

new feature videos as well. You can access it at www.thepress.net. Sign up and we will email you The ePress paper every Thursday afternoon, or you can pick up a printed copy for free here at The Press office, 248 Oak St., or at over 70 locations around East County. What you won’t get with The ePress, however, is access to all our online features, photo slideshows and daily news and information happening in and around your communities. We have a saying here at The Press: “We’re a weekly newspaper, but we’re a daily news site.” And our online news site changes every day, sometimes multiple times a day. So the choice is simple. If you want your paper delivered in print form, let us know. If you would like to have access to all

to see. In my opinion, the celebration should have been done at their playing field with the players, LHS band and the cheerleader’s parading around the field. It should have started at 6:30 or 7 p.m. to give the working parents time to make it there. We only wish that the city had the same dedication toward the team. Throwing together a celebration for this once-in-alifetime accomplishment in the manner they did was not only a terrible disgrace to our great champions but to the citizens of Brentwood and the Liberty alumni! I was also informed of and would like to acknowledge the two fine gentlemen who put together a GoFundMe to purchase each player a ring, and within 24 hours they collected $15,000. Congratulations Liberty Lions! Helen Torres Brentwood

throngs of smiling partygoers enjoying the first night of Chanukah. (Chanukah is the Jewish holiday during which we light candles for eight nights.) The large crowd in attendance celebrated with delicious food, fun activities and candle-lighting at the Brentwood City Hall. A commonly expressed sentiment from attendees was appreciation that the Brentwood Press listed this wonderful event. It was especially satisfying to see a Jewish event highlighted, particularly at this time of the year. “Seeing the notification for the Chanukah candle-lighting made me feel part of this community,” said Nancy Solomon, who attended with her husband, son and granddaughter. “It was nice to see Mayor Taylor and Joel Bryant there, acknowledging Chanukah within the Brentwood community.” Mindy Newman was happy to find this listing. “Every week I read the Brentwood Press, and it was fantastic to see a Jewish

Heritage girls’ basketball team wins West Coast Jamboree Gold Division by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Heritage girls’ basketball head coach Rob Ocon admitted that he was drained at the conclusion of the three-day West Coast Jamboree. But seeing his team hoist the event’s Gold Division championship plaque after a 58-39 win over a high-quality St. Mary’s (Stockton) squad helped the fatigue subside. “It was a great, great win for the kids,” Ocon said. “I am just so proud of them. They played as a team today.” Heritage guard Jordan Sweeney (17 points), center Abigail Muse (16 points) and guard Julie Ramirez (13 points) scored all but 12 of the squad’s points. The game’s outcome was never in doubt after halftime as the Patriots rolled on to their sixth straight victory. Heritage (9-1) outscored St. Mary’s (10-3) 14-2 in the final 3:35 of the second quarter, turning a 4-point second-quarter deficit into a 33-25 halftime lead, before outscoring the Rams 25-14 in the second half to lock in the win. Heritage forward Kidest Befikadu was out with a sore ankle, but Muse and substitute forward Ja’lani Battle more than compensated for her absence. Muse scored 8 of the team’s 19 firstquarter points to help the Patriots end the quarter with a 1-point lead, before she got in early foul trouble. Battle chipped in with 4 points as the only Heritage bench player to see action. “This is why we practice so hard,”

Ocon said. “This is the reason the girls who were in the game were so successful, because (the bench players) practice so hard to make that group (who played) good.” With Muse on the bench, St. Mary’s opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 4-point lead midway through the second quarter, but Sweeney’s 3 at the 3:35 mark of the second quarter – the Patriots’ first points of the quarter – kick-started the Patriots’ 14-2 run into halftime to give them an 8-point lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Sweeney scored 8 of the team’s 14 second-quarter points. In the loss, St. Mary’s center Anna

Blount scored 15 points and guard Jada Moss scored 11. Fellow Rams guard Tai Sherman finished with 9. Heritage opened the tournament with a 61-25 thrashing of Edison (Stockton) on Dec. 27, before knocking off the Los Angeles City Section’s powerhouse Granada Hills Charter 57-50 the following night to advance to the division championship. Heritage and St. Mary’s are scheduled to play again Jan. 9 in Stockton. “(The players) are happy, I am happy for them. But we see this team again in another week, so they are going to be

ready – they are going to want payback,” Ocon said. Heritage was slated to return to the court at Amador Valley (Pleasanton) Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. Results of that game were not available as of press time. Liberty girls’ basketball Elk Grove defeated Liberty 53-21 in the West Coast Jamboree Pearl Division championship. The Thundering Herd (10-2) opened the game on a 21-4 run and never looked back. see Jamboree page 16

Freedom ballers excited over hot start by Michael Dixon Correspondent

The Freedom girls’ basketball team reached the North Coast Section playoffs a season ago, ending a five-year drought. The start to this year has been even better. With Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) play right around the corner, the Falcons are 9-2. And while he’s happy with the strong start, coach Jeff Jonas isn’t especially surprised. “I thought we were going to be kind of what we are,” Jonas said. “I thought we’d be good on defense, and that’s really where we’re shining. That’s been our strong suit so far this year. Offensively, we need to shore it up. The kids have had to move and change some position around a little bit. It’ll come along. But it’s tough to do that

in December rather than November.” The reason for the moving around was an injury to junior Fanta Jimissa, Freedom’s starting center and arguably best player. She had a strong showing in the first half of the season opening game. Unfortunately, an injury just after halftime ended her season. Jonas credited Jamisa’s backup, sophomore Amari Houston, with helping to keep things relatively steady. He also cited a number of Freedom’s most experienced players. These include all-league point guard, senior Gail Victuelles. “She really gets our motor going,” Jonas said. “When Gail is playing well, we look pretty good. She’s a good shooter and ball handler, strong on defense, and is even a pretty good rebounder for her position.”

Other veteran Falcons include fouryear starter Stacie Torres and three-year starter Jackie Munoz. The number of experienced players is something that Jonas attributes the team’s success to. “With a lot of players from the year before, we have a set way that we do things,” Jonas said. “That makes practice a lot more repetition and not as much explanation. The kids, the returners, really want to excel. So there’s a lot of effort there in practice to improve.” Freedom has also gotten solid production from some of its new players. One of them is Jordyn Moore, a shooter who transferred to the Falcons this year. Another is freshman Varonica Gordon. While Jonas did note Gordon’s inexperience, he also noted that he hasn’t coached someone that athletic in a long time. Freedom will open its BVAL slate on

the road against Antioch Jan. 8. Within the league, Jonas identified Heritage as the clear favorite, but added that the remainder of the league is fairly open. He noted that nonleague games against Clayton Valley and Modesto Christian will be barometers. Jonas also added that the team’s goals aren’t necessarily about wins and losses or final standings. “Our goal really is giving excellent effort every time and giving excellent attitude when we’re communicating and talking with each other,” he said. “I hate to say ‘one game at a time,’ but we try not to think too much beyond one game at a time. If we give good effort, we feel that we’re probably going to be in the game. If the shots go down, we’re probably going to win the game.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site - www.servicelinkASAP.com - for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case: 141461. increase is due to an unexpected $1.3 million rise (above projections) in development funds, with the remaining jump courtesy of unforeseen sales, property and hotel tax revenue. On the development front, Brentwood issued 411 single-family residential building permits in the fiscal year – about 135 more than expected. Meanwhile, property tax revenue jumped $896,964 to $13,819,751 from 2017 to 2018, while sales tax income jumped $597,881 to $8,785,927 and hotel tax receipts increased $158,772 to $555,535.

and pass a live-fire shooting test to receive a concealed carry permit. Effective Jan. 1, under AB 3129, those convicted for domestic violence will never be allowed to possess a firearm. Another bill, SB 1200, will strengthen California’s Gun Violence Restraining Order to get firearms away from those threatening harm to themselves or others. “So often after a shooting or suicide we learn that the perpetrator was known to be at risk of committing violence,” said SB 1200 author Senator Nancy Skinner’s (D-Berkeley). “By easing the process to access a Gun Violence Restraining Order and ensuring that all firearm parts are removed, SB 1200 will save more lives.”

Bay Area bridge toll hikes

Seven Bay Area state-owned bridges will see a toll increase in 2019 per Regional Measure 3, which aims to alleviate growing congestion. The voter-approved measure will increase tolls by $1 effective Jan. 1. Tolls will rise again January 2022 by another $1 and again in 2025 by an-

The $5.5 million savings in unexpected expenditures is the result of a series of unfilled positions, but it also reflects the continued fiscal responsibility of the city’s many departments, Andrews said. “Saving $5 million is something I can appreciate,” said Brentwood Vice Mayor Joel Bryant. “That is really great.” The $28.6 million in year-end general fund monies comprises $16.4 million in reserves (about 30 percent of general fund spending), with $10.1 million set aside for future Redevelopment Agency Program (RDA) payments to the state; $900,000 for future strategic plan initia-

tives that outline the municipality’s key goals and projects in two-year increments; $700,000 for future Brentwood Boulevard maintenance and $300,000 for general plan updates that steer development decisions related to land use, community design, transportation, public services and resource conservation. The RDA program repayments come from the state’s 2012 dissolution of the program, which required the city to repay $12.5 million to the state over 10 years, beginning around 2016. Mayor Bob Taylor said he is pleased with the state of the city’s finances, noting that Brentwood continues to main-

tain a 30 percent general fund reserve. “We keep that 30 percent reserve, and to my knowledge, we have never touched it,” he said. Andrews also noted that the city’s water and wastewater enterprise funds appear to be rebounding from low years due to the drought, and the agency’s internal service and replacement funds are well-positioned to allow the municipality to replace its future infrastructure and assets. tion tighten, entrepreneurs interested in pursuing home-based cooking businesses will find more opportunity. Under AB 626, chefs who wish to prepare food for sale may do so from their private residence – as “microenterprise home kitchen operations” will now be included in the definition of a “food facility” per the state health department. The business owner must not have the equivalent of more than one full-time employee and gross annual sales must not exceed $50,000.

Restaurant industry changes

Servers will need to break old habits under AB 1884, which now prohibits restaurants from offering plastic straws without customer request. “I am thankful to Gov. Brown for signing AB 1884,” said Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier), the measure’s author, in a press release. “By removing the default behavior of providing straws with every drink, consumers have an opportunity to make a deliberate, small change that will minimize the harmful impacts of single-use plastic straws in the environment. It’s a small but significant step forward and will hopefully set the precedent for the rest of the nation to adopt similar policies that will ensure less plastic ends up harming the environment.” Children’s meals will also change. Unless otherwise ordered by the customer, under SB 1192, kids’ meals will no longer offer sugary drinks – only water or unflavored milk. While laws around waste and nutri-

For the benefit of animals

Under SB 1305, first responders are authorized to perform basic first aid on animals, as the bill would place limitations on liability. And through AB 485 this year, California is now the first state in the nation to officially ban the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits through a pet store unless the animal was obtained from a shelter or foster care program. The law aims to reduce the number of puppy mills and the millions of animals euthanized each year at taxpayer expense through county animal services.

AB 1793 will require the Department of Justice, by July 1 this year, to review past cannabis convictions to determine which cases are eligible for a dismissal or redesignation of a conviction under the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, enacted by voters in 2016. “AB 1793 will bring people closer to realizing their existing rights by creating a simpler pathway for Californians to turn the page and make a fresh start,” said Assemblymember Rob Bonta (DAlameda). “Long after paying their debt to society, people shouldn’t continue to face the collateral consequences, like being denied a job or housing, because they have an outdated conviction on their records. I thank Gov. Brown for signing this important bill.” To view SB 820, visit https://bit. ly/2CCPb2H. To view SB 1300, visit https://bit.ly/2HvOR7V. To view AB 3129, visit https://bit.ly/2TiGXRw. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding

on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. All checks payable to Prestige Default Services. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 793-6107 or visit this Internet Web site www.auction.com, using the file number assigned to this case 18-1301. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
