Drilling into area’s rich oil history by Kyle Szymanski

February 1, 2019

A large swath of private county land, once a boon for oil seekers in the 1960s and beyond, apparently holds a surprise. Sunset Exploration Inc. is in the process of draining leftover oil reserves that were not captured by the Shell Oil Company and Occidental Petroleum Corp. in the 1960s and ’70s. The drilling is taking place on Deer Valley Road open land, between Balfour Road and Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center. Sunset Exploration Inc. drilled its first commercial well in August see Oil page 22

Bringing human trafficking to light by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The City of Brentwood and a local coalition plan to highlight human-trafficking prevention through a free interactive and informational event. The activity, scheduled to take place during a Brentwood Farmers Market, is intended to spread awareness about human trafficking, said Justin Gomez, a communications specialist with the Contra Costa Human Trafficking Coalition, which is spearheading the event at no cost to the city. The Brentwood City Council signed off on the plan during a recent meeting. January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Human trafficking involves people being exploited for the commercial purpose of sex or labor through fraud, force or coercion according to the coalition, a public-private

Brentwood Police Chief Tom Hansen partnership of over 20 county public and nonprofit service providers and law enforcement agencies that aim to eliminate the illegal activity. “This (future event) is probably one of the most widely engaging tools that we have for the public to interface with the issue,” Gomez said. Coalition partners assisted 250 human-trafficking victims countywide in 2017 according to its latest available statistics. Statewide, 1,305 humantrafficking cases were reported that year with 5,147 reported nationally through the first six months of 2018. Brentwood Police Chief Tom Hansen said no community

is exempt from the possibility of such crimes. “Human trafficking is a problem in every city and something we need to stay on the forefront of – and we do,” he said. “Our detectives are trained, and they have a good relationship with our District Attorney’s office. Any report of that is taken absolutely serious.” During the coalition’s Brentwood event, passersby will be invited to spread nontoxic red sand into sidewalk cracks – symbolizing the world’s vulnerable trafficked population that falls through the cracks – while learning about the complex issue. The sand packets will be

accompanied by information sheets, and attendees will have the chance to delve deeper into the issue with on-site staff or in nearby training sessions. The sand eventually disappears as it’s subjected to the outdoor elements. “When we spread red sand in these cracks, it’s akin to a pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness or wearing a yellow wristband for the Livestrong brand,” said Gomez. “It’s a symbolic reminder for people and broaches the topic of human trafficking within their psyche so they hopefully learn more about it.” The coalition has held similar successful events in Antioch and Martinez and has also spearheaded educational documentary screenings and organizational staff trainings. Brentwood City Councilmember Karen Rarey, who prompted officials to explore bringing an event to the city, said a series of local incidents highlights see Trafficking page 22

Interstate 680 construction gets underway The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced the start of construction on the first phase of a multiphased project to improve safety and help reduce congestion at the Interstate 680 and State Route 4 Interchange in central Contra Costa County. The initial phase of construction involves widening a 4-mile segment of State Route 4 in both directions between Morello Avenue in Martinez and State Route 242. This phase of work also involves the replacement of the Grayson Creek Bridge to bring it up to current state bridge safety codes. “Improving the I-680/SR-4 Interchange has been a priority for the Contra Costa Transportation Authority for many years,” said CCTA Board Chair Federal Glover. “Thanks to an infusion of Senate Bill 1 funds from the state, we are able to take this first important step in improving safety at this critical interchange.” The total cost for improving this segment is approximately $136 million. “For too many years, we have neglected our infrastructure, and as a result, Californians spend too much time in traffic, too much money on car repairs, and far too little time with their friends and families,” said Assemblymember Timothy Grayson. “I have been working for over two years with the California Transportation Commission and Contra Costa Transportation Authority to fund and break ground on this long-awaited project so our community can spend less

time sitting in traffic and more time doing what they enjoy.” Caltrans District 4 Director Tony Tavares said this project will reduce the travel time for the more than 100,000 people who drive this corridor each day and is a key piece of an ambitious regional improvement plan. “The funding from Senate Bill 1 is enabling Caltrans and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority to rebuild California’s highways,” said Tavares. The Interstate 680 and State Route 4 Interchange improvement project will widen approximately 4 miles of State Route 4 by adding a third lane in the eastbound and westbound directions to improve on-ramp and off-ramp

merging. The project also includes widening of five structures, extending eastbound State Route 4’s carpool lane approximately 2 miles, installation of safety lighting and replacement of the Grayson Creek Bridge. Over 50 years old, the Grayson Creek Bridge has exceeded its serviceable life. Breaking ground for this segment of work in this multiphased project will lay the groundwork for future improvements to connector ramps, improve traffic safety and enhance traffic flow. Interstate 680 serves as the main artery for motorists traveling through central Contra Costa County, connecting it with Solano County to the north and Alameda

and Santa Clara counties to the south. State Route 4 serves as the only major east-west transportation link joining the communities of Antioch, Bay Point, Pittsburg and Brentwood with central and western Contra Costa County and the Bay Area. The project will widen 4 miles of State Route 4 by adding a third lane in the eastbound and westbound directions and improve on-ramp and off-ramp merging actions. The project also includes widening of five structures, installation of safety lighting and replacement of the Grayson Creek Bridge. This project will lay the groundwork for future improvements to connector ramps, improve traffic safety and enhance traffic flow.

A look at marijuana’s history, medicinal benefits This year is the 50th anniversary of the famous rock concert Woodstock. Five hundred thousand people literally closed the New York State thruway heading to White Lake, New York, to see a multitude of famous and about-to-be famous Senior performers. I was orner one of those people; a recent high school graduate who thought this would be the best thing ever, and it was! The late ’60s was a time of hippies, peace, love, war protest signs and Marla marijuana. Of course, Luckhardt it was illegal, and anyone who indulged was subject to arrest if caught. It didn’t seem to dissuade the many concertgoers at Woodstock, and in fact, there were so many kids smoking that the police chose to ignore it and just focus on keeping us safe. In the U.S., there is a long history of the legalization of cannabis (legal term for marijuana). Many argued whether it was safe and proper to make it legal at all. Several states began approving it for medicinal purposes, requiring a doctor specifically trained in the substance to do a physical and mental evaluation of the patient for its use. The legal process really began state by state around 1906 and resulted in prohibitions beginning

C

in the 1920s. By the mid-1930s cannabis was regulated as a drug in every state, including 35 states that adopted the Uniform State Narcotic Drug Act. Cannabis was officially outlawed for any use (medical included) with the passage of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. States and other jurisdictions implemented policies that conflicted with federal law, beginning with the passage of California’s Proposition 215 in 1996. By 2016, a majority of states had legalized cannabis for both medical and recreational use on a local basis but not through legislative measures. In January 2018, Vermont became the first state to legalize it through an act of legislature as opposed to the above-mentioned ballot initiatives. There are only a few places locally that sell cannabis that contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the part of the plant that affects you differently than the cannabidiol (CBD), which is more suited for pain. Bottom line, the difference is that you can use a topical lotion with CBD, and it helps to alleviate muscle tenderness, arthritis and other chronic pain for up to several hours at a time without any reaction that gives you the feeling of being high. I have met numerous seniors who find the creams, lotions, oils and even the CBD edibles help either eliminate pain for a period of time or bring it down to a manageable level. It depends on the product used

Couch Potato Furniture THE STREETS OF BRENTWOOD

“ I have met numerous

places offer a 10 percent discount for seniors so it helps defer that tax a bit. Some dispensaries have satellite vendors that are solely a delivery service and may or may not mark up the products as a middleman. Do your homework. Several towns don’t allow marijuana delivery of any kind, and you may have to make arrangements to meet the courier in another area. Check to see if there is a minimum dollar amount and always use cash as they are not set up for credit cards or personal checks; only debit cards may be accepted by some. They do not carry cash for change so bring the exact amount. It may be prudent to share an order with someone else to defer minimum costs for free delivery. Marijuana use is extremely controversial. Some feel the THC is dangerous and should not be legal. I appreciate that point of view, but it is a plant and is safer than potent and addicting opioids. If someone can benefit safely from a natural remedy then it is worth looking into it, especially the CBD portion for pain relief, which can now be found online. Before you decide to try anything new, consult your doctor and get his or her input. As for me, I will smile and reminisce this year about a time of flower power, unity and peace on that farm 50 years ago. seniors who find the creams, lotions, oils and even the CBD edibles help either eliminate pain totally for a period of time or at least bring it down to a more manageable level.

and the level of discomfort the person is experiencing. Smoking marijuana is usually entails a combination of the CBD and THC part of the plant. The CBD helps with pain and the THC has a relaxing effect that can aid in sleep. There are a lot of different strains, so if you are experimenting, it is advised to speak with a knowledgeable vendor who can suggest the right product for your specific needs. Finding the right amount and level of cannabis is crucial and should be researched thoroughly. Some strains can cause slight paranoia so avoid those. There are a few dispensaries, but finding one that is reputable is key. I have found the government is being diligent to insure safety, quality and honesty. It is a huge learning process. They placed a 30 percent tax on these products but some

en. Kamala Harris (D-CA) kicked off her presidential bid in front of a hometown crowd in Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland on Sunday, Jan. 27. “And so, I stand before you today, clear-eyed about the fight ahead and what has to be done – with faith in God, with fidelity to country and with the fighting spirit I got from my mother,” said Harris, speaking in front of a crowd estimated by campaign sources to number 20,000. Harris joins a crowded field of democrats with no clear frontrunner, including Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana; Julian Castro, former mayor of San Antonio; Rep. John Delaney of Maryland; Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York; Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts; and entrepreneur Andrew Yang. Theater sponsors equity series examining love Pittsburg California Theatre is sponsoring Los Medanos College Equity Series: What They Said About Love, March 2, at 8 p.m., and March 3, at 2 p.m. This documentary theater production is written and performed by Steve Budd, who brings 12 characters to life using their own words while weaving in the story of his own search for a life partner. Budd asks the question why other people can and he can’t – tie the knot, that is. Over hours of interviews, he asked couples about the push and pull of love – what keeps them from pulling apart despite annoying the heck out of each other. HOW SAVE FOR DOWN PAYMENT - II Last week I gave you some tips about how to help save up for a down payment to buy a home. Here are some more tips: VACATIONS – If you take an annual vacation somewhere, consider skipping this year. Or downsizing the trip from an expensive cruise ship in another country to sightseeing local landmarks. There are tons of great places to see within a few hours drive of here. ENTERTAINMENT – Going out to the movies, plus the snack bar and then your monthly cable and premium movie subscriptions and multiple streaming services could add up to thousands of dollars over the course of a year. Read a book, play a board game, spend time with your loved ones. Consider cancelling all cable and streaming subscriptions except the one that has the most content you enjoy. If giving up going to the movies is just too much to ask, consider going to matinees, and choose the standard screening instead of IMAX or 3D. COMMUTE – When you consider gas, tolls and vehicle maintenance, it adds

up quickly. Can you carpool? Maybe work remotely now and then? This may even lead to you working remotely permanently. This would have further savings in clothing and meals (PJs and cereal instead of Armani and P.F. Chang’s!). GYM – Belonging to a gym plus the workout clothes can add up. However, staying in shape IS important, so do an internet search for “work out at home exercises.” Just make sure you do them! CREDIT CARDS – Studies have shown that people spend more when they use a credit card then when they have to take physical cash out of their wallet. Consider going with an envelope system, where you assign a monthly budget for each category above, and put that much hard cash in the envelope. And when the envelope is empty, you are done spending on that category that month. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Voted “Best of Brentwood” multiple times. The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) is hosting its inaugural Volunteer Firefighter Recognition Ceremony and is looking for the public’s help identifying all who served as volunteers or paid on call (POC) firefighters in one of the agencies that now makes up the ECCFPD. Founded in 2002, ECCFPD history stretches back much further than the 17 years of its existence. Personnel from the district are working to uncover and document that history and recognize the efforts of those who protected the citizens and property of East County in the past. In an effort to save funds and go green, the Brentwood Union School District (BUSD) has contracted with GE Solar for the installation of solar panels at five district sites. “The money that we use to pay teachers, buy books and pencils is also the money we use to keep the electricity on,” said BUSD Superintendent Dr. Dana Eaton, “so we continue to seek out opportunities to try and lower that balance that we’re paying because it means we can put more money toward teachers and books and pencils.” The funds for such a project were made possible from a grant through Proposition 39. “Starting about four years ago, we received Prop. 39 money, which was getting people back to work after coming out of the recession – an energy conservation fund,” said Robin Schmitt, BUSD chief business official, noting the district then applied for a grant for a solar project. “When we looked into solar projects, it just didn’t pencil out for us to either pay for it, which we didn’t have the funds to do, or to get a finance option – the dollar amount between what we would save in energy just didn’t justify the district use of public funds to do that and get the energy savings at the same time.” Upon receiving $817,000 for the project, the legwork to make it a reality began. Last summer, an analysis was conducted to evaluate locations for solar. Five sites were identified as candidates – Adams Middle

School, Krey Elementary School, Loma Vista Elementary School, Mary Casey Black Elementary School and Ron Nunn Elementary School – and the project was put out to bid. Three companies bid to do the solar as a power purchase agreement, and GE Solar was selected. Contracts are being signed now and work is projected to begin this summer with a hopeful October completion. Eaton further explained the reasoning for selecting certain sites, as the panels cannot simply be placed on rooftops that were not regulated to hold them. “The problem for rooftops is that we have to go through the state architect and the regulations on school districts are so crazy that it ends up being cost prohibitive,” Eaton said, further noting the cost of construction for a school building to be roughly $800 per square foot. “We’re trying for them to serve as a dual purpose, such as playground shade structures that serve as a solar energy generator.” Schmitt added several factors are considered when looking at placement of the proposed panels, including their impact on the school’s aesthetics and function along with the view given to neighboring houses. Previous meetings with principals and families offered the opportunity for feedback, and Schmitt noted there will be another sitdown with the community for final review. “We’re looking at $157,000 in savings in total (per year) for the district by doing this project,” Schmitt said. “We’re really excited.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

How to care for goldfish Parents eager to instill a sense of responsibility in their children may turn to pets to facilitate such lessons. But dogs or cats may not fit in with everyone’s lifestyle or living arrangements. In such instances, fish may be parents’ best friends. Freshwater fish tend to be inexpensive and relatively easy to care for. Goldfish in particular can make ideal primary companions because they are hardy and especially inexpensive. “Feeder” goldfish cost mere cents per fish, and while they may be primarily bred to be used as live food for larger prey, these goldfish can still provide many of the same pet care lessons as other pets. Learning about goldfish On the way to becoming fish experts, it’s important to point out that, despite their low price tag and availability, goldfish should not be viewed as disposable. These are live animals and deserve the same care and consideration as other pets. National Geographic reports goldfish are descendants of carp and originate in China. There are hundreds of varieties of goldfish found around the globe. In fact, koi are cousins of the traditional aquarium goldfish. Caring for goldfish Goldfish won at state fairs may come home in plastic bags or small bowls, but they are best cared for in traditional aquariums. Goldfish are omnivores that will thrive on a healthy diet made up of pellets, vegetables, algae and flakes. These fish tend to produce a lot of ammonia waste, so if they are kept

in a bowl, the water will need to be changed quite frequently, and the bowl should be large. Many aquarium experts say a tank that’s between 10 and 20 gallons is ideal for a goldfish. Such tanks will not stunt its growth and will keep it healthy and comfortable. Goldfish like relatively low water temperatures, advises fish resource The Goldfish Tank. They should not be mistaken for tropical fish. Goldfish are typically best kept alone or with other goldfish so that their living environments are easily maintained. Also, some goldfish will try to eat smaller fish. A clean tank is vital to the health of goldfish. Filtration and an air pump are ideal to help agitate the surface of the water and make oxygen more accessible. It’s important to use a dechlorinator product to remove chlorine and other chemicals from tap water so that the fish can thrive. According to CaringPets.org, people who choose a bowl for their goldfish instead of a standard tank should follow the rule that the greater the amount of surface area, the more oxygen in the water. For this to be achieved, choose a wide goldfish bowl over a tall narrow one. In addition, the water will need to be changed every few days, and 50 to 75 percent of the water in the bowl should be replaced with fresh water. Keeping goldfish as pets can introduce children and even adults to the task of caring for a living animal. With the right care, these fish can thrive and provide many hours of entertainment and enjoyment.

Letter to the Editor A call to improve safety

Editor: The corner of Dainty and Griffith has become a magnet for hits and very near misses with the latest occurrence taking place this weekend. It has been noted that a drunk driver took out the street and stop signs. I must say I was most impressed with the scale of efficiency related to public works replacing the STOP sign that was taken down by the driver of the car. In the now more than two years we’ve lived near the intersection there has been an exponential increase in the amount of traffic, speeding cars and vehicles that simply ignore the stop signs. More importantly, there have been a couple of near misses involving children. As you can well imagine, several in the community are deeply concerned and would like to see a traffic light placed at

the intersection. We’re also wondering if the school might be able to put a guard at the intersection in the mornings and when school is dismissed to assist children navigating this intersection. What kind of technology is there available to monitor the intersection? Are there smartphone apps or roadside sensors that can help in any way? Are speed bumps a possible solution? We feel it is imperative that measures be taken in the very near future to do as much as possible to prevent the loss of life or severe injury to one of the city’s residents, workers or visitors. Liberty boys’ win 13th straight game by Michael Dixon Correspondent

While the Liberty boys’ basketball team didn’t quite wrap up a Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) title on Tuesday against Heritage, it took a huge step in that direction by winning their 13th straight game. The Patriots played the Lions close in the middle two quarters, but Liberty’s start and finish were just too strong. The Lions outscored Heritage 13-5 in the opening quarter and 24-12 in the fourth en route to a 66-44 victory. “I felt like we started out with a good tempo,” Liberty senior forward Skyler Newman said. “We played at a good pace and were focusing on our game plan. And we executed.” Newman led a scorers with 24 points. Senior forward Kyris Mcinnis backed that up with 23 for the Lions. In the third quarter, Newman and Mcinnis accounted for all of Liberty’s points, with Newman scoring 8 and Mcinnis tallying 7. Combined, the two managed to outscore the Patriots in the frame by a point. On the night, senior guard Yoshi Aryen was the only other Lion in double-digits, scoring 12. Heritage did remain in the game until the final quarter. But that was more due to solid defense and an inconsistent Lib-

Heritage was paced by senior guard Carson Borrelli and senior forward Charles Stanford who had 13 each. “We played phenomenal,” Mcinnis

said of his team’s defensive effort. “I loved the defensive rotations.” Liberty coach Jon Heinz attributed some of the offensive struggles of both teams to the loud environment. With a noisy crowd, it was hard for players to communicate with each other on the court. The coach acknowledged that it wasn’t the greatest overall effort from his team but was understandably happy with the result. “I thought both teams played very tentatively tonight. It wasn’t the best showing from either team,” Heinz said. “But it’s one of those things that in a league matchup, a win is a win. We got the result we needed.” In terms of postseason standing, Heritage is still well positioned even with the loss. The Patriots are 16-7 overall with a 4-3 record in league play. The Lions are 18-5 overall and have a perfect 7-0 mark in the BVAL. A win over Deer Valley on Friday coupled with a Heritage win over Freedom would clinch the league title for Liberty. Otherwise, the Lions will have a chance to clinch the league next Tuesday on the road against the Falcons. In the girls’ contest, Heritage defeated Liberty 55-19 to improve to 20-3 and 7-0 in league play this season. The loss dropped Liberty to 10-13 and 1-6. Heritage basketball holds Unified Sports event by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Heritage girls’ basketball team’s 68-60 victory over Antelope last week was a win for the Patriots and the school community. But that wasn’t the most important victory of the day. The Patriots hosted the 12-team Rep Your School Girls Basketball Showcase last week, benefiting the school’s Special Olympics Unified Sports program that brings together special and general education students on intermixed teams. “The ‘Rep Your School’ comes from representing your school’s awareness of Special Olympics and Unified Sports,” said Heritage head coach Rob Ocon, who spearheaded the event after watching a Special Olympics television story on ESPN. “Not every program here (at the showcase) has a Unified Sports program, so they were intrigued.” The event featured six games over about nine hours, including a number of marquee matchups: Freedom vs. Modesto Christian, Castro Valley vs. Edison (Stockton), St. Mary’s vs. San Joaquin Memorial, Montgomery vs. Sacramento, Folsom vs. Bear Creek, and Heritage vs. Antelope.

The Heritage girls’ basketball team hosted a 12-team showcase last week, benefiting the school’s Special Olympics Unified Sports programs. “We filled the whole schedule pretty easily,” said Ocon, who noted that spectators filled the stands for most of the day. As for the court action, Modesto Christian edged Freedom 46-39, Edison squeaked out a 47-43 win over Castro Valley, Sacramento beat Montgomery 61-48,

Bear Creek knocked off Folsom 58-38 and St. Mary’s knocked off San Joaquin Memorial 55-36. The Patriots (20-3, 7-0) capped the event with their 68-60 victory, handing the Titans (23-2) only their second loss of the season.

Patriots center Abby Muse led the way with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and guard Paige Ziemann (14 points and five steals) and Kiddy Befikadu (14 points) took the load off Jordan Sweeney, who scored 10 points while being hounded defensively all night. “I was really proud of my team,” said Sweeney. “I thought our scoring was really spread out and that was hard for them to guard.” The Patriots jumped out to a 24-7 lead after the first quarter, and held the Titans at bay the rest of the way. Heritage led by 16 at halftime and by 12 after the third quarter. Antelope cut Heritage’s deficit to nine with 1:56 to go in the contest, but drew only a point closer the rest of the game as time ran out. “We played good team ball today, and I thought our defense was great,” Ocon said. As the Heritage squad streamed from their locker room after the win, it was clear the victory added to what was already a good day for the Patriots. Ocon said the squad plans to hold the Rep event annually, possibly with additional teams over two days next year. “Credit to the parents, volunteers, the sponsors,” Ocon said. “It was a great allaround effort from everybody.

The Liberty girls’ soccer team entered its game against Heritage last week riding a 10game unbeaten streak. The Lions weren’t about to let that streak slip away against the Patriots. Four players from the Lions’ roster found the back of the net, with three of the goals coming in the second half to beat Heritage 4-0. “If your goal is to repeat as an NCS champion, this what you want,” said Liberty head coach Tony Martins. “Everyone wants to be successful in this game.” The first half was evenly matched until the final minute when Savannah Boone used her speed to play the ball down the wing and cross it to freshman Madison Del Prado. Del Prado headed the ball in to give Liberty a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Lions buried the game in the final 20 minutes as Makayla Marinaro took advantage of a misplayed ball by Heritage goalkeeper Leilani Staples to make it 2-0, followed by Alexis Gutierrez’s banger that knuckled its way into the net to make it 3-0 less than two minutes later. “I was excited to get back in. I cheated the ball and was able to get it in,” said Gutierrez. “Our intensity changed a lot after those goals.” Boone added a point later in the contest, once again using her speed to beat Staples to the ball on a one-on-one encounter. Despite a heavy collision with Staples, Boone’s shot dribbled into the goal with eight minutes left in the match. “Once we gave up the goal, we lost our composure,” said Heritage head coach Gary LaFleur. ‘’We made some mistakes, and Liberty was the better team.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-18-837951-RY. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. Visiting Angels receives Leader in Excellence Award Visiting Angels has received the distinguished Best of Home Care – Leader in Excellence Award from Home Care Pulse, the leading firm in quality assurance for home care. The award is the highest recognition awarded by Home Care Pulse and is given to select home care businesses that consistently rank among the very highest in 10 or more quality metrics. As a Leader in Excellence, Visiting Angels, Livermore is now ranked among the top 10 percent of home care providers participating in the nationwide Home Care Pulse Satisfaction Management Program. This accomplishment demonstrates

the organization’s long-term dedication to excellent care and quality improvement. To qualify for this award, 10 percent of their clients and caregivers were interviewed each month by Home Care Pulse. Over a 12-month period, they received high client and caregiver satisfaction ratings in areas such as caregiver training, compassion of caregivers, communication, scheduling, client and caregiver compatibility and more. Using feedback from clients and employees as well as quality benchmarks from Home Care Pulse, the management team set goals to reach the highest level of excellence possible.

The company is leasing the mineral rights on the land owned by the Ginochio family. “We felt comfortable there was an economic amount of oil to recover and there are multiple amounts of individual oil pools that are out there and are separate and distinct,” said Bob Nunn, Sunset Exploration Inc. president. “Some of them were efficiently drained, and some of them were not efficiently drained and still have economic reserves left.” Nunn declined to state how much oil has been garnered from the site. The pristine capturing process involves drilling about a mile deep into sandstones, where hydrocarbons are trapped and reservoirs can be tapped, allowing crews to drain leftover reserves. The unique visual activity has drawn considerable interest from passersby.

“I was interested to see that there was construction and curious about what it would be,” said local resident Susan Wallace. “There were a lot of tall pipe sections, and I thought it was possibly a giant windmill, but putting it behind and at the bottom of a hill seemed odd. A friend went and asked the guys working there and found out it was an oil well.” Nunn, who’s been involved in such work all over the state for 34 years, said the curiosity is justified. Brentwood has a prolific natural gas and localized oil production history, but Northern California is typically better known for natural gas with oil production more prevalent in the southern portions of the state, such as Kern County, Nunn said. The oil reservoirs at the center of the work are naturally pressured and flow easily but tend to slow down in time, requiring the application of pump jacks – known as oil donkeys – where fluid is pulled up and suction cups lift out the oil that doesn’t flow naturally.

We’ve been impressed by their commitment to their clients and caregivers as well as the quality of the overall care they provide. They really stand out in their market as a top home care provider.” For more information, visit www. visitingangels.com/livermore or call 925443-1000.

Nunn said the work is like a balloon that’s been 60 percent deflated, allowing the remaining 40 percent to be collected. “We are getting what is left, but there is less pressure,” said Nunn, who noted it’s too early to speculate how long crews will be at the site. “What’s left in the balloon doesn’t quite come out as quickly as it first came out. It has less power behind it because the reservoir is partially depleted, like a balloon.” The practice is largely dependent on oil prices, since over time more water than oil is produced, Nunn said. “The higher the price of oil, then the less oil we can produce and still be profitable,” he said. “When the price goes down, it gets harder.” Nunn says it’s possible that more goodies exist in the fields, but getting to it could be problematic as urbanization and the noisy work collide. “Nobody wants an oil rig next to them,” he said.
