Brentwood Police Department volunteer Curtis Wong (center), seen here with Sgt. Todd Orlando and Police Records Clerk II Lynn Dansie, was recently named the agency’s Volunteer of the Year.
When Brentwood resident Curtis Wong began volunteering for the police department, he started by pulling down old signs on city property. But the endeavor ended up pulling him into a newfound passion. Wong has done small but important tasks for the department for the past 10 years, and now the department is shining a light on his continued dedication. The longtime volunteer was recently named the department’s Volunteer of the Year as voted by members of the law-enforcement agency.
“Curtis has done so much for us,” said Sgt. Todd Orlando. “He’s so deserving of this award.” Wong stumbled into his position when a friend needed a partner to remove signs around town, and he has remained a steady force ever since. He’s a standout member of a 15-person volunteer team that aids the force with everyday functions, including clerical tasks, assisting with search-andrescue activities, photocopying, answering phones, DUI checkpoints, vehicle abatement, special events in the city and deployment of the traffic speed see Volunteer page 26

Changes coming to California WaterFix Local Rivals Share Title
by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer
A radical change in scope for the California WaterFix project has tunnels opponents calling for the state to scrap the permit approval and begin anew. In a memo dated Feb. 7, Karla Nemeth, director of the DWR, announced that WaterFix will be developed in two stages. The first stage will include a single tunnel and two intakes with a capacity of 6,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). The second phase will add another tunnel and a third intake expanding the capacity to 9,000 cfs. “The Department of Water Resources is trying to sell its latest WaterFix revision as a one-tunnel plan, but that is smoke and mirrors,” argued State Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D - Discovery Bay). “Their plan still calls for two tunnels. The new plan still poses the same threat to the Delta’s environment, agricultural economy and way of life. There still is no cost-benefit analysis or economic
