Church offers Day of Compassion by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer

Charity, as the saying goes, begins at home, and the adage is especially true in these tough economic times. So in keeping with the spirit of giving, members of the Harvest Time Assembly of God, along with local volunteers, will be hosting a communitywide event this weekend. And while it’s unlikely that organizers will be turning water into wine, they’ll most certainly be providing sustenance – and hope – to those in need. It’s called the Day of Compassion, and will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the Harvest Time Assembly of God in Brentwood. The event is open to the public and will provide bags of groceries, free haircuts and complimentary dental and medical screenings to anyone

tor Dennis Reynolds. “So we got this idea to have one big event, and it’s really taken on a life of its own. It’s going to be fabulous.”

Reynolds and his congregation began gathering interest, along with food and pledges, last October while making their way throughout the community in their mobile food wagon. Realizing that the need was greater than they could handle, the congregation decided to host an event on the ample church grounds. “The response to this has been overwhelming,” said Reynolds. “We’ve got about $20,000 worth of groceries, and dentists have said they will provide free vouchers for those who need dental work. We’ve even got students and faculty from Los Medanos College coming to help out. It just keeps growing and growing.” Other local businesses involved in the event include Delta Fence, Rancho Furniture, Oakley Chiropractic and Miller see Church page 21A

City to design new trash transfer site by Samie Hartley Staff Writer

The Brentwood City Council has voted to proceed with the design process for a new solid-waste transfer station that will be located farther away from playing fields at Sunset Park. The existing transfer station, located north of Elkins Way, where waste collected from brown, blue and green cans is taken to be sorted before it’s removed from the city, is outgrowing its location. City staff began planning for an expansion of the current site, but later determined that building a new station on a new site, while the current station continues to operate, would be a better solution. Assistant Public Works Director Paul Eldredge told the council at its Feb. 24 meeting that the proposed design process is estimated to cost more than $200,000, part of the $7.4 million budgeted for the expansion. Funding for the project has been part of the city’s garbage rates for years, and therefore will not

“We’ve adapted to these conditions over the years, but we can’t stay at this location forever.

Paul Eldredge require an increase in current rates. The proposed site will be more efficient because it will be a fullyenclosed station, unlike the current station that is open to the elements and subject to delays due to weather conditions, Eldredge said. An enclosed facility prevents waste from blowing around or becoming saturated with rain water, which makes waste materials more difficult to load into removal trucks. “We’ve adapted to these conditions over the years, but we can’t stay at this location forever,” Eldredge said. “The weather conditions slow the operations down and impact the overall efficiency of the facility. With an enclosed facility, we wouldn’t have that problem.”

An enclosed facility would also limit noise pollution and the odor emitted outside to the nearby ball fields. The new site would also feature a drop-off recycling area for use by the public, and allow for citysponsored Free Dump Days, where residents could drop off specified waste. The existing site is closed to the public. The new facility is proposed to be built 1,000 feet north of the current site, expanding the facility from 2.8 acres to 5.7 acres. Since the proposed site is so close to the existing location, the city will be able to save on an environmental impact report, since staff will be able to utilize most of the key information from the re-

port done for the current site. While the proposed expansion and relocation will improve the transfer station’s efficiency, moving the site to a new location will also reduce the current facility’s aesthetic shortcomings. If the transfer station is moved, the current site could be cleaned up and used for an expansion of the sports complex. After 30 minutes of discussion, the council approved the proposal with a 4-1 vote, Councilman Brandon Richey opposing. Richey said while he supports moving the transfer station away from the ball fields, he was unsatisfied with the unanswered questions presented in the proposal regarding the project’s ultimate cost, questioning whether approving the proposal was the financially responsible move. He suggested that the city consider contracting with a regional transfer station rather than spending the money to build a new facility. “There are some questions

Sheriff’s office to cut East County patrol Police urge residents to speak up for service level by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office is looking to slash an estimated $10 million and a possible 75 positions from its overall budget this year. According to Lt. Mike Burton of Delta Station, the cuts are coming, and if Discovery Bay residents want their voices heard, the time to speak is now. “It’s a long way from Discovery Bay to Martinez,” said Burton, whose Delta Station beat includes Discovery Bay, Knightsen and Bethel Island. “And I think it would benefit the town for people to go down there (to the Board of Supervisors) and tell anyone that will listen that Discovery Bay is no longer a sleepy little town and that they need to be counted. “Right now we’re maintaining the same level of service we always have, but we are definitely down to the bare bones.” A single full-time deputy is currently assigned to Discovery Bay, augmented by a resource officer and the marine patrol

– which also covers Knightsen and Bethel Island. Cutting any additional baseline services from an already minimal level of coverage, said Burton, is definitely cause for concern. The good news, however – depending upon whom you ask – is the pending arrival of two new resident deputies paid for with Discovery Bay P-6 funds. The dollars, which have been accruing over the years from extra taxes paid by some communities in Discovery Bay West, are earmarked for enhanced police services. The plan to put the deputies on the street is awaiting approval from the county, and would be independent of the level of service the town currently receives. In other words, the two new P-6 deputies could not be touched, even in the event the sheriff cuts the town’s current baseline of service. But the specter of impending cuts has some residents worried that the guarantee of two new Discovery Bay deputies might make the decision to cut the current beat a little easier to swallow. “I knew months ago that the sheriff would be coming under intense budget pressures, and the worry all along is that he could chop the base level with the see Patrol page 20A

NO SOUP FOR YOU!!! That’s right, my first Seinfeld reference! If you weren’t a fan, there was an episode about a restaurant that sold soup, but if you didn’t act correctly, the proprietor yelled at you and threw you out. The US government is taking a somewhat similar approach to doling out stimulus funds. (I’m mostly kidding. C’mon, lighten up…) For example, President Obama announced his Housing Rescue Plan recently. The focus of this plan is to help people stay in their homes by avoiding foreclosure. The biggest tool they have to work with is to assist homeowners who have lost equity to refinance into lower rate mortgages. This should help them continue to make their payment and stay in their homes. This will be especially helpful for those people who face a current or future large payment reset to an un-affordable amount. Sounds great, right? Well, this plan applies to only those homeowners where the original loan was $417,000 or less, and where your home is not more than 5% upside-down. This

means you can’t owe more than 5% of what your home is worth. Both of these qualifiers hit our area especially hard. It wasn’t that long ago that a “starter” home around here was $500K, so most of us have loans over $417,000. And we’ve seen values drop more like 50%, not 5%. According to several different studies I’ve seen, that means that less than 5-10% of the homes in the Bay Area will qualify for this new plan. This is the smallest percentage for any area in the country. So, if you live in the Bay Area, “NO SOUP FOR YOU!” But if you live somewhere else, the same studies show that this could help almost 25% of all homeowners (mostly out of California). So it is a “good” plan, it just tends to exclude our area. If you have questions on this or any other real estate topic, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Getting ahead with the pre-school Boogie Hundreds of students from East County Performing Arts Center in Brentwood have entered preschool ahead of the game. Their dance classes have taught them important life skills, the same skills they’ll be introduced to in preschool. Nina Koch, owner of ECPAC, says that dance classes designed for the development of dancers 2 to 4, like her Boogie Babies program, help prepare them for preschool. The program is successful not only because it echoes the lessons children will learn in their early education, but because of the teaching staff. “One of the ways we have been able to see such success with the children is we have educated teachers who understand how children learn,” said Koch. She also credits her teachers for demonstrating a passion for teaching and strong belief in the philosophies of the school. Nini Westlake has been teaching Boogie Babies at ECPAC for five years. Westlake has a background in dance and education and says that she loves specializing in teaching the youngest dancers. “I enjoy working with the kids,” said Westlake. “They give me unconditional love.” Kristine Cataldo enrolled her daughter Alexandra in Boogie Babies when Alexandra was 4. Cataldo chose dance because she felt it would give Alexandra confidence, grace and exercise. Cataldo has found that dance has impacted her daughter in positive ways: “She was a bit shy as far as expressing herself in front of others.

Boogie Babies, from left, Gianna Altamirano, Gabriella Paz, Brooke Gibson, Brianna Pires and Savannah Wirkus enjoy themselves, blissfully unaware that their dancing is also good for them. Hannah Dodson, at far right, displays fine form at her Boogie Babies class. Now, in her kindergarten Christmas singing program, she knew the words and hand movements that went with each song. It was amazing at how confident she was.” Koch has worked many years to cultivate this program. “A lot of research” has been required to find ways to keep the program fun and structured at the same time. She strives to integrate proper dance technique and terminology in a way that will keep the children interested. “The children are not only expanding their imaginations

but learning dance positions and placement without even realizing it,” said Koch. Although the children have many chances to flit around like butterflies, Koch says these classes are not a free-forall. After years of teaching, Koch and her staff know that children appreciate structure, and by using positive reinforcement techniques and rewards, the structured classes still feel like fun. She has created a balance between keeping the children challenged and ensuring their success

in class, a balance echoed in many preschool curricula. Koch knows how important it is to give children a strong educational foundation; her 6-year-old has been dancing since the age of 2. “It was important to me to develop a program where I knew my own daughter would flourish,” she said. Credit union Liberty students to help fire victims scholarships Through a program offered by Travis Credit Union, 20 seniors graduating from local high schools will each receive $1,000 scholarships. All graduating high school seniors are eligible. Applicants must have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, be bound for a two- or four-year college or university, and be a member of Travis Credit Union in good standing. Students who live in Travis Credit Union’s 12-county service region and are not yet members may join the credit union and apply for a scholarship at the same time. According to Travis Credit Union president and CEO Patsy Van Ouwerkerk, “In the last five years we have received a tremendous response from young members who have exhibited a commitment to academic excellence and community service. We look forward to recognizing even more of our deserving young members this year.” Scholarship applications are available at any branch location. Students may also apply online at Travis Credit Union’s Web site, www.traviscu.org. In addition to a completed application, other requirements include a 250-word essay, a certified high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from a teacher. Completed applications must be received no later than the close of business on Friday, March 13, 2009.

The Liberty High School Leadership class is working to collect items to donate to a Bethel Island family who lost everything when their home burned down last month. The family lost all of their possessions and their dog perished in the fire, so Liberty senior Vannessa Rodriguez has taken charge of the committee to help raise money and collect donated items to help them

get back on their feet. “When I heard about the story, I knew I had to do something,” Rodriguez said. “The couple has a 5-year-old and a 2-month old, so we are looking for clothes, food, health supplies – anything to help this family start their lives again.” Rodriguez said she would continue collecting items for donation – from blankets and pillows to diapers and baby

formula – during spring break. “It’s horrible what happened,” she said. “You never know when these things are going to happen. You never know if it might happen to you. I hope the community will come together to help support this family.” Donations may be dropped off at the Liberty Career Center. For more information or to make a donation, call Rodriguez at 925-209-1542.

During a series of three time trials, 18 students cast their planes into the air of the Bristow gymnasium, but only Bristow student Uriel Erostico’s penny plane flew for more than three minutes. While the penny plane trials took place, Walbridge assisted with the bridge-breaking competition in which weights were added to bridges made of balsawood. Weight was added until the bridge broke, or Walbridge ran out of 500-gram weights. Bristow students Nathan Sorenson and Alexis Gomez tied for first place when their bridges refused to break, bearing the weight of 8,500 grams. “I had no idea my bridge could win,” Alexis said. “It looked like a fun and easy project, so I just started drawing it out on graph paper and then I built it in two days. I didn’t think I had a chance of winning. This is exciting.” Drew Davidson, with the help of dad Jeff, built a helicopter that took home first place. It flew for only a few seconds, but was the only helicopter in the competition to fly at all. “It was fun to make, but a lot of hard work goes into it,” Drew said. “You have to sand the propellers to make sure they aren’t too thick or too thin. It’s a lot of work to find the balance.” Drew also took home third place

for the CO 2 Cars, tiny derby cars propelled by a carbon dioxide cartridge. The cars zipped along the stage at the front of the gym throughout the evening. The competition was supervised by Adams Middle School teacher Patrick Rockenbaugh, but the winners were from Bristow. Austin Hines and Austin Loren won the novice CO 2 and Pro CO 2 competitions, respectively. In the Rugby Runner competition, remote-controlled cars with homemade attachments went head to head to see whose car could retrieve a volleyball at the center of the gym and then move it to the other side of the gym without being knocked off course by the other cars. Zach Sorenson, brother of Nathan, won with his design that included a claw made of coathangers. The combination of plastic and wire hangers allowed his hot rod to overtake the competitors, who armed their cars with cardboard and plastic buckets. Zack, who also participated in the penny plane competition, said the rugby runner was the most fun because he got to play with the remotecontrol car. The final competition, the AMA Cub planes flight, was won by Charlie Glennon, the only one to compete. Glennon also took second place in the rugby runner competition. The top three winners in each competition received a medal at the end of the evening.

It’s a Matter of Law By Barbara A. Frantz

NO, DELLA, I DO NOT BELIEVE MY CLIENT IS GUILTY (PERRY MASON) This month, I told you that I would discuss how real life court actions and TV shows compare. Once you are the subject of a law suit, it is important to put the situation that threatens you into proper perspective, Most of us use TV as the “acid test” for what will happen to us. There are a number of shows that have crossed our screens over the years… Perry Mason, Boston Legal, LA Law, The Practice, Law and Order, Judge Judy, and of course the real life trial of OJ Simpson. I would say that of all the TV shows, Law and Order is the most realistic. For example, in Boston Legal, it was not unusual for the Partner of the firm to be asked to “make an appearance in the afternoon in court for a murder case.” In really large firms partners rarely make appearances. They are instead responsible for “rainmaking” or bringing in new clients. In TV shows, you hardly ever see an attorney carrying a file folder. Most of the time, in real life, we are dragging boxes and boxes of evidence with roll carts. Also, the likelihood of making an appearance without hours of research, and expert witnesses is remote. Cases are often continued numerous times to assure that each side is fully prepared to go forward.

In TV shows, it always looks like the judge and/or the attorneys are the most important people in the court setting. In actuality, most attorneys realize that it is the court clerks who have all of the power. Why? Because knowledge of the details is where the power resides, and clerks have all of the specific knowledge about the details. Less than 10% of all cases go to trial. Most cases are settled before one actually appears, and in most TV shows, especially Perry Mason, the protagonist always wins. This is unusual in real life. Most of the time, there is no clear winner. Even if you win the case, you may never receive the money. The information above is not a substitute for seeking legal advice. Barbara Frantz, local resident for 16 years, has 31 years of legal experience, offering proven solutions for business owners to increase revenues and achieve their long range goals. “Show me the money!” - A notorious saying in some circles, but always referenced back to the 1996 Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding, Jr., film, Jerry Mcguire. In the film it was said first by Cuba Gooding Jr. while he made the most important financial decision of his family’s life. For anyone being foreclosed, r bring threatened with foreclosure, here in California, “Show me the note!” is the battle cry for fighting the foreclosure. On two recent occasions in California restraining orders have been in place to stop foreclosure proceedings because the lender(s) were not to the provide the bankruptcy courts the documentation needed to prove they truly owned the note – therefore they could not prove they had the right to foreclose on the property in question. With the very recently released Office of Thrift Supervision study, announced by managing director Grovetta Gardineer, providing evidence that 55% of all “modified loans” re-default within the first six months, it’s truly relevant to begin discussions on alternative ways of saving your home. Since California permits foreclosure proceedings to begin without the homeowner represented by legal counsel, for anyone in foreclosure, or threatened with foreclosure, it’s come to a point where hiring, or at least looking into, legal counsel should be a serious thought. Instead of paying for a loan modification that promises no finish line, or exact results, why not at the very least investigate the idea of a real estate attorney, or a bankruptcy attorney to save your home? Quoting from yet another film, this time the 1972 classic, The Godfather, “every great wealth comes from a great crime.” The very same lenders, brokerages,

and trading firms that made hundreds of millions (in some cases, billions) from the housing boom, are also the same sloppy companies that apparently did not pay enough attention to the details – such as the needed documentation to confirm ownership of many mortgage notes. With over $810 billion in mortgages converted into securities and made available for trading in 2006, it is not becoming apparent in the courts that not every lender executed the proper paperwork to transfer some of those mortgages to the investors who thought they bought them, and so now those investors are being told by the courts they cannot foreclose on those loans! Simply stated, if the party trying to foreclose can’t provide proof they own the note on your home, how can they possibly call said note due and retain ownership of the collateral, thus foreclosing on your family? In court, by law, if they lender cannot provide the needed documentation - the original note – within 5 years of it being requested (5 years is the statute of limitation for these cases) than the homeowner is free of any obligation on the mortgage. As former federal bankruptcy Judge Glen Ayers stated, banks looking to reap the benefit of the note “may not be able to show the judge they have the right to foreclose.” More and more Judges nationwide are taking a page out of Johnny Depp’s book while they tell lender’s to “forget about it” just as he did in the 1997 film, Donnie Brasco! Chiropractor Blamed For Huge Explosion! Brentwood – Local chiropractor, Dr. James Martin D.C. was found to be responsible for a huge explosion in Brentwood. He was going on about his business helping Brentwood men and women eliminate a serious life altering medical condition in his clinic when he unknowingly got himself into a precarious situation. A very slick medical equipment salesman from Florida talked Dr. Martin into buying a very large expensive shiny new machine with lots of digital displays that was supposed to be the next big thing for eliminating a serious medical condition that affects over 80% of the population during their lifetime. This health condition that affects a large portion of the population does not really have a successful treatment. Lots of different treatments are tried only to fail, leaving its victims helpless and hopeless, only to suffer this affliction for the rest of their lives.

herniated, bulging and degenerated discs from all over the nation, sometimes over 400 inquiries per month. As a result, he has three non surgical disc machines. Two for low back and leg pain and one to treat neck, arm and hand pain from disc problems in the neck.

Local Doctor Duped By Slick Salesman? Dr. Martin thought he had been duped by this fast talking salesman from Florida, when this new medical treatment for a seemingly incurable disease was supposed to be a new miracle treatment showed up in a huge moving truck. The doctor reluctantly looked on as some technician from this Florida based medical equipment manufacturer assembled a mammoth, shiny, metallic spectacle covered in beeping flashing numbers. After a few hours of clanking, ratcheting and drilling Dr. Martin was asked to verify and sign for this huge mechanical beast. Skeptically the doctor signed and the technician left the doctor with an appointment for a Training Doctor who was going to train him and his staff to operate this big machine.

He is also looking to hire doctors to work for him to keep up with the demand. If you are suffering with SERIOUS back pain, leg pain, neck pain or hand or arm pain caused by a bulging, herniated or degenerated disc, pay attention. This may be the most important article you read this year!

Just What Had The Doctor Done?! Dr. Martin could have bought a Ferrari, but instead ended up with this machine! Well, the “Training Doctor” came, did her training and left. Dr. Martin then began treating this seemingly incurable condition with this alleged miracle breakthrough treatment. Dr. Martin then performed these treatments over the course of four weeks and he was absolutely floored by the results of this new medical breakthrough! Dr. Martin Had Found The Biggest Breakthrough In The Treatment Of Back Pain And Leg Pain As Well As Neck Pain And Arm Pain Caused By Herniated, Bulging, And Degenerated Discs! He just could not believe that he was watching hopeless cases of back pain and leg pain that would not get better after chiropractic treatments, physical therapy, pain drugs, epidural pain shots in the spine, and even back surgery GET BETTER! How could this be? And this is why Dr. James Martin has been blamed for the huge explosion in Brentwood. His office has literally exploded with so many people that are suffering with back pain and leg pain he had to hire extra staff and add office hours to keep up with demand for this new treatment! Dr. Martin’s office receives inquiries about his new non surgical treatment for

ment machine I’m calling my squashed disc machine. How Do Discs Go Bad? Over time the discs in your back tend to get squashed or compressed, especially if you’ve played certain sports when younger or have a job that requires lots of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time. Car accidents, lifting things, very physical jobs just to name a few. It’s kinda like a cookie with cream filling, and the cream filling will start to ooze out from between the sides of the cookie if pressure is applied on top of the cookie (like gravity on our spines). Eventually this happens to a lot of us. Statistics are something like over 80% of Americans will suffer with back pain sometime in their life. Back to my new computerized squashed disc machine. You’re probably wondering how this new machine works.

Dr. James Martin D.C.

Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation or degeneration: A vice squeezing your back, Sitting causes back or leg pain, Stabbing pain at the belt line, Turning over in bed without hurting, Numbness in your toes, Fire down your legs, Prickling in your thigh. Finally, Some Good News If you have been suffering with back pain or leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. It’s all because of 14 recent medical studies on spinal decompression. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told: Try exercising, Try physical therapy, Try pain medications, Try muscle relaxers, Try pain shots, Try dangerous back surgery, Just live with it. If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you do try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots can cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work or made you worse. Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Breakthrough Computerized Non-Surgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain as well as neck pain or arm pain caused by a bulging, herniated or squashed disc or discs. It has helped dozens of people who were suffering just like you. This new treat-

How Does This Machine Work? Haven’t you ever had the thought… ”Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart. I would feel a whole lot better”. Yeah, I know you have. And it kinda makes a bit of sense. Well someone else, actually a medical manufacturer, back pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently pulls you apart, stretches the disc to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like a little vacuum in the middle the cream filling) causing the cream filling to suck back in! Warning: Decompression is NOT like old fashioned traction or hanging upside down which can send you into severe spasms and squeeze the discs even harder! In my clinic, I’ve successfully treated dozens of patients with spinal decompression so there’s no reason your back problem should be any different. In fact, I’m so confident we can help you, I’m willing to back it up…but not with empty promises. I GUARANTEE you will only be accepted into our program IF YOU QUALIFY for the treatment AFTER having THE MOST THOROUGH AND COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT YOU HAVE EVER HAD or I will buy you lunch! (I haven’t bought one yet!) Yes! I am very confident, but I can’t help EVERBODY. You see, there’s a very small percentage of folks we can’t help. Here’s what a couple applicants said after I told them both I couldn’t help them: “I was treated very nicely. The doctors have listened to me and they didn’t rush me out of the office, despite the fact I wasn’t a candidate. The exam I had was super, the best I’ve had anywhere. The doctor explained things to me that no one else ever has.” Non-Candidate, Brentwood, Ca

“I thought I’d write a note to you and all of those potential patients who have serious doubts (as I had) about your decompression treatments. Actually, I thought your procedure was more of a psychological placebo designed for everyone, instead of a non-sur-

gical process that could repair injured vertebral discs. Imagine my surprise when you advised me that my condition was too severe for your procedure to correct. To me, that refusal added world’s of credibility to your program. It showed me that you are only there to help patients; not just to take their money. I assure you that I will recommend you to anyone I know or meet that suffers from spine and/or disc pain. I can do this knowing full well that they will be treated right.” Non-Candidate, Antioch, Ca

And that’s why I’m offering a limited time…

The FREE 19 Point “Flat-Disc” Qualifying Assessment That’s right, no charge and we won’t try to sell you anything. But you will find out if you are a candidate for this revolutionary new therapy. As your FREE ASSESSMENT we’ll check out your: ligaments, muscles, hips, pain index, reflexes, discs, tendons, spine, pelvis, x-rays, flexibility, and nerves.

Libraries on life support Editor: I was absolutely flabbergasted this morning. Why? I saw the schedule for the Marsh Elementary School Library. The library will be closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I know I heard Walter Ruehlig say that he was really interested in literacy. Well, that must have been a slogan to get elected. Here is what has happened to the libraries in the Antioch Unified School District in the past few years: the district library was closed; the position of district librarian was eliminated; all the library clerks were fired; and now the librarians are working at two different elementary schools. How can children be literate unless they read? How can they read varied and interesting literature without a library and a librarian to help them? How can they do research without encyclopedias and the Internet? I am very surprised there hasn’t been a public outcry about this. It’s funny how this district can afford administrators at hundreds of thousands of dollars. They can afford a spin doctor (oh, excuse me, a public relations person) but they cannot afford libraries and librarians – who, by the way, are now called media technicians. Nobody knows what a media tech is. Is that why it’s so easy to eliminate them? Changing the name doesn’t change the importance of libraries in the civil society. The school board needs to look at this. Sharyn Obrigewitsch Antioch

the southwest corner of the lake near Acadia and the Oasis bridge that looked like something of a military bivouac. The big DB pumper truck was there, as well as a couple of other work trucks and cars. I recognized Virgil, our town manager; Diane Stevens from the HOA, and at least a half dozen other DB faces working intensely on what was obviously some emergency event. At first I felt disappointed, as I realized that Discovery Bay had experienced yet another (sewage) spill. But after stopping and talking with Virgil, I felt much better once I heard how the town was handling the incident. Virgil and town staff arrived minutes after being notified of the spill, and Veolia, our town’s new water company, responded within 30 minutes. Virgil had already contacted the Department of Emergency Services, and through them, the Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Department of Health were also contacted. Randy from Common Interest Management was on his way, and Brandon from the Hoffman Company was also en route. The pumps had already been turned off, and town staff and the crew from Veolia were working on solving the problem, which according to Virgil, appeared to be a broken coupler. Safety cones and warning signs had already been deployed, bleach was being sprayed on the concrete and plans for taking water samples from the lake were already underway. During the 10 minutes I was there, Virgil was on the phone four times, and he also warned pedestrians and passing

All this was happening like in a five-minute period and no help had arrived yet and my husband and I were thinking in any minute a car or semi are going to hit us from behind, and our children were seated in the back. We were going to be squished to smithereens! Thankfully, a man in a big black truck offered to push us to the side of the freeway. This kind soul was risking his life to save ours. The victim gave the suspect $100. The armed suspect then ordered the victim to give him the keys to the victim’s truck, a black 2003 Ford Ranger, and fled. A countywide bulletin was sent to Contra Costa law enforcement agencies regarding the incident. The vehicle was located, unoccupied, later in the day in downtown Antioch. No one was injured in the incident. The suspects’ identities have not been determined and the investigation is ongoing. Those with information regarding the incident should call the Antioch Police Department on the non-emergency line at 925-778-2441. Feb. 26 Officers of the Antioch Police Department served search and arrest warrants at a house in Pittsburg for 29-yearold Chevelle Payne, who is wanted for a rape that occurred on Jan. 21. Payne was not living at his house of record, but family members convinced him to turn himself in, which he did at department headquarters. He confessed to the crime, as well as a sexual assault against a minor in 2005. Those with information regarding this crime or similar crimes should call Detective Robert Green at 925-779-6932. Vasco project gets $10M

he Alberti family – from left, Kim, Emmalee, Ethan and Jeff – conducted some important business at City Hall on Main Street in Disneyland: they registered their fondness for their Hometown Weekly Newspaper by being Seen with the Press on the last day of the kids’ fall school break. In observance of Disney’s Halloween theme, the Albertis donned black shirts – but flashed not-so-ghoulish smiles. Grandma, holding the camera, flashed back.

Contra Costa County District III Supervisor Mary N. Piepho has announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Commission has granted $10 million for the Vasco Safety Improvement Project. Construction is currently estimated to begin in the summer of 2010. Vasco Road has become a major commuter thoroughfare, serving as an alternative to the congested I-680 and SR4 corridors, and has been a top priority for Piepho since her first term in office. The new allocation of funds comes in response to an earlier request for funding to support the safety project. The funding is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In addition to the federal stimulus funds, the project will be funded with Propo-

sition 1B funds, developer fees and a federal earmark from the City of Brentwood. The funding will be used to build the project’s first phase, located in the Brushy Peak area. A 1-mile concrete barrier will be raised and a southbound 1-mile passing lane will be lengthened to form a continuous passing lane of 5½ miles. Both phases of the project will improve safety on Vasco’s Brushy Peak section, which has historically seen the highest concentration of severe collisions, although community and public safety efforts have culminated in more than two years of zero fatalities on Vasco Road. For more information, call Piepho’s office at 925-240-7260.

Why Some People Lose Weight And Seem To Keep it Off Without Effort… While Others Lose It, Regain it, Then Lose it, then regain it, Over and Over and Over

I

t really isn’t fair at all… Why can two very good friends decide they both want to lose the extra 50, 75 or 100 pounds they have put on over the last few years and one loses over 100 pounds and the other loses some weight for a while then ends up gaining it all back and even more frustrating, the extra weight gained on the rebound? Only to repeat this up and down never ending yo-yo weight gain then weight loss then weight gain and then loss, each time getting more and more frustrated and feeling even more hopeless and doomed to be fat forever. What you have had hidden from you the whole time you have been frustrated trying everything from starving yourself to dangerous pills, to ridiculous programs that require a math degree to calculate your points, to public humiliation in the form of weighing yourself in front of other weight challenged victims, may be the most extremely effective, natural, non drug, non surgical, simple, easy, safe and smart way to end your weight loss battle forever. Now, I know you’re thinking… ”Just who the heck has been hiding what weight loss secrets from me this whole time?!” Great question. My name is Dr. James Martin D.C. and what I am about to reveal to you is going to irritate a lot of people in the weight loss industry who don’t want you to know what I am about to share with you. I don’t really care what they think. What I care about is the success of my friends and patients. The funny thing is, most patients that come into my office overweight and feeling hopeless to ever lose their extra weight, already know in the back of their mind what they should Patient before new brain based weight loss treatment really be doing to lose the weight. Yes! You are not stupid. I’ll bet you are actually pretty

I can’t wait to do my next treatment!” That statement or various versions of that statement are comments I hear on a daily basis in my clinic. I have seen patients lose up to 9.5 inches and 7 lbs in only 6 treatments. I am so confident that my weight loss program is so unique and you have never seen anything like it, I am willing to put my money where my mouth is. I am so convinced that this program is so different than anything you’ve ever seen I am willing to guarantee it! If it isn’t, I’ll buy you lunch! (I haven’t bought one yet!) Yes! I AM confident, but there are a small number of people out there this may not work for. So, I am offering for a limited time…

Patient before new brain-based weight loss treatment

Patient over 100 lbs lighter after new brain-based weight loss treatment

smart! How do I know this? Well, let me ask you or rather tell you what is probably going on in your mind. You know what you should do already. You know you should eat proteins, veggies, fruits and water. You know you should exercise daily. You know you should not eat close to bed time. You know you should avoid sugars, processed foods, fast foods, etc. You know a lot! THAT IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM. You’re problem is more of “I just don’t like to exercise, or I really don’t like water, or I love ice cream or chocolate or whatever”. You know what to do, you just can’t seem to do it! You need help. Right? So why are thin people thin and why are fat people fat? Well, my opinion is thin people think different than fat people. Yes, we all have different genetic makeups, but I’m talking Patient over 100lbs lighter after brain based weight loss treatment about being grossly overweight to the tune of 50, 75, 100 pounds overweight. Follow a thin person around all day.

Then follow… well… follow yourself all day. You will clearly see a difference in what the thin person does and eats versus what you do and what you eat. So, how do YOU change and start thinking like a thin person? Great news! If you are one of those victims of the weight loss industry and find yourself STILL overweight and have given up or just need to know what REALLY works for real lasting results, pay very close attention, as this may be the most important article you read this year! As I said earlier, my name is Dr. James Martin D.C. and I have brought to Brentwood what may be the most unique, doctor supervised weight loss treatment program EVER seen in California…maybe even the U.S. Yes, I realize what a bold statement that is, but what I have heard time and time again from patients who actually get accepted into my proprietary weight loss treatment program and see fantastic results is “It is nothing like I have ever seen or even heard about. It’s amazing.

From the glorious Napali Coast in Hawaii to a River of Bears in Alaska, from the historic streets of San Francisco to the red rock wonders of the Southwest, and from quirks of nature to quirky and wonderful characters, “Open Road with Doug McConnell” will appeal to anyone interested in exploring, appreciating and caring for the West. Patrol from page 3A ‘cover’ provided by the P-6 enhanced services,” said resident Bob Mankin. “The base level, by my best guesstimate, is at only 25 percent of FBI guidelines for unincorporated areas of the West. To even think of chopping that further in this unincorporated area is insane. It’s literally dangerous.” Baseline coverage, insists Burton, will not be supplemented with P-6 dollars. “They (sheriff) can’t touch the P-6 (deputies),” he said. “From my perspective as an acting chief of police, that’s not going to happen. The Web site, a traveler’s video guide to the West, is filled with video, stories and tips from Doug’s extensive travels over the years throughout the West. Those who check in are encouraged to pass along their own tales of travel in the region and their recommendations about things to do, places to visit and organizations to support. – Contributed by Shelly Lewis about ‘if they get one (P-6 deputy), then we’ll take one (resident deputy).’ “Whether or not Discovery Bay gets the resident deputies, whatever cuts are made will not be based on that. I’m just hoping that this issue (budget cuts) allows people to stand up and take notice. If there are any discretionary dollars out there, Discovery Bay should let their voices be heard.” The sheriff’s budget, which will include Discovery Bay, is scheduled for discussion at the next Public Protection Committee meeting in Martinez. The committee usually meets on the second Tuesday of the month. For date and time confirmation, contact Supervisor Mary Piepho’s office at 925-240-7260.

Trash from page 1A being asked tonight that we flat out don’t know the answers to,” Richey said. “I love the idea of getting the transfer station out of the ball fields – that’s unquestionable as far as one of our priorities – but with that said, I have to look at the totality of the circumstances here … Is this the financially responsible move to make right now?” Richey said he couldn’t support the current proposal until his questions were answered. Councilman Chris Becnel said that while looking at regional collection might be something for the future, now isn’t the time to pursue that possibility. “That raises the bigger issue as to whether the city should be responsible for its own waste collection. That’s beyond what the city needs at this point.” Vice Mayor Erick Stonebarger said he was on the fence after hearing the staff report. While he thought it was “fantastic” that the proposal suggests a new site away from the ball fields, he mentioned he too was concerned about the costs of the design project. “I thought you (staff) were going to say it would be something like $50,000 (for design costs) but I guess that was the pie in the sky for me,” Stonebarger said. Mayor Bob Taylor said in support of the proposal that since the city already owns the land of the proposed site and there is no need to conduct an extensive environmental impact report, the proposal’s economic benefits can’t be ignored. City staff plans to contract the design project by the end of the month. After the design is 50 to 60 percent complete, Eldredge said the design process will pause, as city staff reviews the design to make sure it works within the city’s budget. In a recent Cage Combat 10 showdown, Antioch resident and Crosley Gracie Jiu Jitsu student Taylor McCorriston made his mixed martial arts debut against Cung Le fighter Adam Antolin. At the outset of the first round, McCorriston fed the jab repeatedly to the face of Antolin, while the Cung Le fighter threw wild overhand rights. Midway through the round, McCorriston shot a fast double leg that sent his opponent hard into the fence, but Antolin was able to get back to his feet. After a period of clinch battling, it seemed that McCorriston began to get the tie he wanted and threw five or six knees to the body and head of Antolin until the bell sounded. The second round opened with Antolin delivering a huge kick to McCorriston’s head. Unfazed, McCorriston blasted another huge double leg and wasted no time in passing his guard and gaining the mount, then the back. McCorriston stayed busy there, but the fence would assist Antolin in yet another scramble to the feet as the second round came to a close. In the third round, Antolin came out swinging for the fences. The two fighters traded punches and kicks until McCorriston earned yet another fast takedown. With his corner screaming at him, Antolin went for a heel hook, only to be dazed and dropped to his stomach by a right by McCorriston. McCorriston went for the finish, raining down punches, but lost position as the two made their way back up to their feet. The round ended with the two flyweights throwing leather and the crowd chanting “Ninja” in celebration of McCorriston, who earned the unanimous-decision victory. – Contributed by Stephanie Gracie

The Heritage varsity boys basketball team advanced in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs last Friday with a 57-39 victory over the Pinole Valley Spartans in front of a large and raucous crowd in Patriot Gymnasium. Pinole Valley had a tremendous advantage on the offensive boards, but missed nearly a dozen second-chance shots in the paint. The Patriots’ Jimmy Enomoto nailed a three-pointer, and his hustle and veteran savvy helped Heritage take a 12-6 firstquarter lead. In the second frame the Spartans began to show signs of life, hitting several treys and getting a few putbacks to fall, closing the gap to two points at the half. In the third quarter, both teams started nailing their shots, but baskets by senior Jordan Knox and junior Mark Winthrop gave the Patriots a slight cushion. Enomoto provided an emotional boost with a gorgeous assist to sophomore Justin Bunting that brought the Heritage fans to their feet. But the Spartans didn’t wilt, tying the game at 28. From that point on, however, it was all Patriots, as the Spartans could not put the ball in the hole. A 14-4 Heritage run spanning the third and fourth quarters was capped off with a driving layup by Chris Santucci, giving Heritage a 45-35 lead. Despite multiple second- and third-chance shots to draw closer, Pinole Valley continued to miss golden opportunities in the post. Meanwhile, Heritage milked nearly each possession for 20 seconds, many of which resulted in either a back-door layup or a trip to the freethrow line. The Patriots outscored the Spartans 19-4 in the final period. The Patriots traveled to Hayward High School on Wednesday to take on the Hurricanes in third-round NCS action, the results of which were not available at press time. Heritage falls to champs The Heritage varsity boys volleyball team played superbly last week in a losing effort against College Park High, a perennial powerhouse and the 2008 NCS champions. The Patriots’ performance earned them respect and praise from College Park for a well-fought match. The first game Heritage players had a “why are we here? We’re going to get killed” look, which they lost 9-25. And then the Patriots played a match to remember. The match featured rallies that were long and intense. The second game, a nailbiter that Heritage lost 26-28, gave the team confidence to win the third game 25-23. Josh Ibarra led the defense with 22 digs, six kills, four aces and one block. Jacob Fredrickson notched 12 assists, 10 digs and one kill. Tanner Cook and Daniel Regan both recorded 11 digs, three kills and one ace. Michael Favalora made seven kills, six digs and two aces, and Kyle Jones contributed eight assists, five digs and three kills. Heritage’s junior varsity team also played a spectacular game, considering that it was the very first volleyball match for three of its players. The team took a solid lead during both games, but College Park was able to chip away at it and clinch the victory. Matt Maderos recorded six digs and four aces. Phillip Benotti led the offense with three kills, two blocks and two aces. Logan Jones made four kills, four aces and three digs, and Christian Nagkowski notched three digs and two blocks. Liberty from page 1B put runners on first and third with two outs. But Raposa got Kaley Marden to line out to first, putting the game on ice. “We hung in there,” said Liberty Coach Rich Barrios. “We made a couple of mistakes on defense. We let one pitch get away from us – the one that the girl hit the home run. But we continued to hang. We hit the ball offensively. So I am real pleased with our first one out of the gate.” Barrios was asked how his team is shaping up this season. “I am very happy with where we are,” he said. “I was a little disappointed that we made a few more mistakes in the infield than I thought we were going to. We are still without three starters. We still have a lot that we need to address as the season progresses. But I am very pleased with our first couple of weeks out of the chute.” Liberty’s next game is 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 at home against Miramonte, which will be its last game before a twoweek hiatus and then the start of league play.

Storyteller (and former Brentwood Parks and Recreation staff member) Kirk Waller will be spinning yarns at the Brentwood Library on March 10.

MARCH 6, 2009

Waller weaves words by Samie Hartley Staff Writer Former Brentwood Parks and Recreation staff member Kirk Waller will return to his former stomping grounds next week to bring his storytelling talents to the Brentwood Library. The program Tales That Take You Far Away was inspired by Waller’s experiences reading to children, and now he travels across the Bay Area sharing his love for fables and stories. “Almost 20 years ago I was a recreation coordinator in the East Bay, reading stories to children every day,” Waller wrote in an e-mail. “As I realized I was familiar with the stories, I put the book down and began telling the stories with my own style. “As I looked in the children’s eyes and they looked at me and they smiled and laughed and responded to the story, something magic happened. I discovered that storytelling is living and dynamic and the audience helps shape the energy and outcome of the story by their response. That living magic, the relationship between the teller and the listener, is what I enjoy the most.” After discovering his passion, he soon began traveling around Northern California, performing an average of 15 shows per month at schools, libraries, churches, storytelling festivals, businesses and special events. He’s a member of National Storytelling Network, National Speakers Association, Storytelling Association of Alta California and Delta Wordweavers. Waller is known for telling a variety of stories, from cultural tales to personal stories to his series of animal stories entitled “Quack, Gabble, Squawk, and Other Animal Tales,” which he will perform at the library. Last year he released his first CD of stories based on the animal series. The disc includes seven stories with titles such as “Who’s Trippin’ on my Bridge?” and “Curly Locks and the Macaroni and Cheese.” Youth Services Librarian Lindsay duPont said she’s seen Waller perform in the past and thought his performance would be ideal for Brentwood youngsters. “He’s hilarious,” duPont said. “Storytellers have to be extremely dynamic and charismatic to keep an audience’s attention, and Kirk provided superb voices for his characters and brought his whole body into the story. He has a natural flow that seems informal, almost like you’re hearing a story from a friend.” Waller visits the Brentwood Library on Tuesday, March 10 at 4 p.m. Admission is free. To hear samples of Waller’s storytelling, visit his Web site, www.kirkwaller.com.
