Father of suspect shares his story by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer
Tracy Redmond couldn’t shake an uneasy feeling on the morning of July 3, and when text messages to his wife, Marta, and adult son, Matthew, went unanswered, his apprehension grew. The previous night had been a difficult one for the Redmond family. Matthew, 29, showed up on a neighbor’s property saying he was looking for someone. The neighbors were not close with the Redmonds, and they did not recognize Matthew as being from the neighborhood. No one knew the person for whom he was looking. Matthew was asked to leave and did so without incident. Around 9 p.m., he returned, and this time neighbors called the police. Just before 1 a.m., the same neighbors observed Matthew standing at their front door, and the police were called a sec-

Rochelle Wagner. “When I told him through the window to leave, he did. And we followed the instructions we had been given (by the police).”
Lt. Walter O’Grodnick of the Brentwood Police Department said officers investigated the disturbances involving Matthew and determined they did not rise to the level of a criminal complaint or arrest. During their first visit to the Redmond home that night, officers from the Brentwood Police Department told Matthew to stay away from the neighbors, and that appeared to be the end of the incident until several hours later when police returned to the Redmond home. “I thought that it was done,” said Tracy. “Then at 1:30 in the morning, the doorbell rings, and the police are back saying that he had gone over there again. He was down here, and Marta got out of bed and I’m like, ‘What’s going on, Matt? They told you to stay away. Why did you go back?’ He really didn’t have anything to see Suspect page 22A
Controversial golf course on hold by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
The Brentwood Planning Commission has delayed plans to consider a controversial development project involving the Shadow Lakes and Deer Ridge Golf Clubs at the request of the project applicant. In its advisory role to the city council, the commission was going to consider the project. It calls for the courses to be consolidated into one 18-hole facility and two age-restricted or memory care facilities up to three stories high (totaling 560 units), placed on 32 acres of closed holes near single-family homes. But SunCoast Properties requested that the meeting be continued for unknown reasons. SunCoast Properties did

Planning commission documents released prior to the canceled meeting indicate that city staff members were going to recommend that the commission deny the project because of concerns that it could adversely affect the surrounding neighborhoods’ character and residents’ privacy. The project could also elicit negative environmental impacts,

LIVE THE DREAM . . .
AND GET PAID TO DO IT!!!
FOR SALE
Captain Morgan’s Delta Adventures, LLC. In 2012, Melinda and Frank Morgan (Captain Morgan) bought a 55-foot, Funcountry Houseboat with dreams of fun days and nights exploring the 1,100 miles of Delta waterways which make up the Sacramento and San Joaquin Delta region. The first eight months of ownership was spent in Dry Dock doing renovations to the Houseboat and making it comfortable, just the way they liked it. The cost of renovations started to skyrocket and soon Frank and Melinda decided to start a cruise business so they could write off the renovations and perhaps make a few dollars while they shared their love of the Delta with other potential cruise guests. So, in 2012 Captain Morgan's Delta Adventures was born and the newly renovated houseboat was christened with her new name…the Rosemarie! The Rosemarie was named after Captain Morgan's mother; it was her middle name, Cynthia Rosemarie Morgan. Once the Rosemarie was home in her slip in Discovery Bay, Melinda and Captain Morgan hit the pavement in Discovery Bay passing out a single-page flyer to every home, condo, business, etc. announcing the start of their new cruise business. In that first year Captain Morgan’s Delta Adventures did a total of about 12 cruises. Getting the word out proved to be much more challenging than it seemed at first glance. But with persistence and a unique marketing plan, Melinda, the Captain and their Crew, built the cruise business to 185 cruises in 2017. Along the way the Captain and Crew perfected the small cruise business and now it runs like a well-oiled machine and has grossed nearly a million dollars in its first six years of cruising. Every year the Captain has refined the business model by eliminating cruises that were not as popular or profitable and now, while the Captain and Crew actually do fewer cruises each year, the popularity and profit margin for each cruise has steadily grown. As a result of the Captain's unique marketing plan and the support of all the Captain's Banner Cruise Sponsors, the CaptainMorgansDeltaAdventures.com website had over 11,000 unique visitors on average per month so far in 2018. Bookings are up and the Captain and Crew are even drawing bus loads of cruise guests from not only the Bay area, but from cities in Southern California as well. Last month two busloads from Yorba Linda, CA, came for lunch at the Boardwalk Grill and a narrated nature cruise. The Captain and Crew also hosted “The Scarlet Ladies of Torrance” for a 4-day and 3-night trip called “Discovering the Delta” and now the Sun City Travel Club has booked the same 4-Day Adventure for this October. “Things have gone so well with Captain Morgan's Delta

Adventures that it has turned into a full-time job!” said Captain Morgan. It's not uncommon to hear Melinda say “Frank false advertised to me. He said we were getting this houseboat to have fun and relax with friends and enjoy my favorite drink anchored in a calm Delta cove. Instead, he put me to work for the past six plus years and now it’s my time to travel the world and have staff wait on me!” Melinda is a retired Army veteran with 20 years of service and now that Captain Morgan has lived the dream by cruising the Delta for the past 6-plus years, it's time to head to Africa on a Safari, or Alaska for fishing giant Halibut, or simply visiting the grandkids in Pennsylvania who are growing up so fast. The Captain and Crew will finish out the 2018 cruise season and, hopefully before then, find a person or couple that is tired of sitting in a cubical all day and wants to live the dream by cruising the Delta and getting paid to do it. Captain Morgan plans to transition any new owner(s) into the cruise business with all the support and help they need to successfully keep the Captain Morgan brand alive and well for years to come. Captain Morgan's Delta Adventures is continuing to grow and can certainly provide very good cashflow for the new owners. The Streets of Brentwood changes hands by Aly Brown Staff Writer
Ownership of The Streets of Brentwood recently changed, and while the ink is still drying on the contracts, residents and tenants alike hope the shift will breathe new life into the retail hub. The open-air mall located at the end of Sand Creek Road and situated beside the Highway 4 on-ramp was recently sold to Chicago-based Fairborne Properties in a deal for $85.75 million, according to San Francisco Business Times. NKF Capital Markets represented the seller – a fund managed by DRA Advisors LLC – and issued the press release Tuesday, July 10. Brentwood resident and founder of The Streets’ Delta Gallery, Jack Gaughan, viewed the shift of hands with optimism. “I think it’s going to be great – they’re going to accomplish the things that the prior owners have been trying to do and haven’t been able to complete,” said Gaughan, who had seen many years as one of The Streets’ longtime tenants before retiring. “The projects, the expansion of the property and better use of the spaces – there is still some unused, undeveloped property there.” The 358,615-square-foot outdoor shopping center is poised around a grassy strip of fountains, a children’s play area and places to sit down and people watch. It’s home to various name-brand stores, a

In addition, the new owner has the opportunity to add a multifamily living unit to one of its parcels. “The Streets of Brentwood has experienced a significant upgrade to the quality and stability of its tenant roster over the past five years and has become the ‘go-to’

center in an affluent trade area where experiential shopping is limited,” Nicholas Bicardo, NKF Capital Markets vice chairman, stated in the press release. “We had a tremendous amount of capital chasing this opportunity given the continued growth prospects of the trade area and quality of the asset.” Residents flocked to social media to express interest and concerns about possible skyrocketing rents, but many shared
in Gaughan’s optimism. “Hopefully, they will bring good changes and new stores,” said Andrea Jung on The Press’ Facebook page. The Streets first opened in 2008 in the midst of the Great Recession. Though the businesses were not without hardship through that time, a 2009 fiscal model submitted by former city officials Donna Landeros, city manager, and Pamela Ehler, treasurer and director of finance, indicated a decline in the city’s sales tax revenue “would have been much worse” if not for the mall’s opening. In 2012, The Streets welcomed new management and tenants when RED Legacy and a fund managed by DRA Advisors LLC purchased the property. According to Gaughan, the former owners’ effort to enhance The Streets to its fullest potential was somewhat hamstrung by the fact that various entities owned and operated the center, and he noted the singular ownership would be preferable. “I think we’re going to see new leases that are going to add a very vibrant life to the place,” Gaughan said. Officials from Fairborne Properties indicated they are excited to share plans for the future of the center in the next few months but declined to comment on specifics at this time. Los Vaqueros Reservoir looking to expand Seen here is Jennifer Allen, director of public affairs for the Contra Costa Water District at Los Vaqueros Reservoir in Brentwood. The reservoir is a candidate to receive Proposition 1 funding that would enable an expansion of its capacity to 275,000 acre-feet of water. The top of the dam, seen in the background will be raised 50 feet if the project moves forward.

A project to expand water-storage capacity at the Los Vaqueros Reservoir is close to receiving Proposition 1 funding. The Los Vaqueros initiative seeks to expand capacity by more than 70 percent – taking the capacity from 160,000 acrefeet to 275,000 acre-feet. An acre-foot is the volume of water 1-foot deep over a 1-acre area. One acre-foot of water is nearly 326,000 gallons, and the expansion will accommodate an incremental 37 billion gallons of water, give or take a few gallons. Proposition 1 was passed overwhelmingly in 2014 when 67 percent of California voters approved the initiative. It became known as the Water Quality, Supply and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014, and it authorized $7.12 billion in general obligation bonds for state water-supply infrastructure projects. The largest allocation of funds, $2.7 billion, was set aside for water-storage and reservoir projects. “We have 14 agencies that are interested in participating in the expansion. None of the partners are looking at the expansion as their only supply,” said Jennifer Allen, director of public affairs for the Contra Costa Water District (CCWD), the entity that operates the Los Vaqueros Reservoir and is the sponsor of the expansion project. “It’s more adding to their tool box for their own reliability or drought supply. IS YOUR TRUST IN NEED OF REVIEW?
I have spent the first part of this year reminding people of the importance of estate planning. There is no reason to end up in court for a probate of assets or a conservatorship. All adults should prepare basic documents, and most will benefit from a living trust. If you do not have an estate plan, you should establish one as soon as possible. Today, I want to talk to people who have already completed an estate plan and see if your plan is in need of review. Many of the trusts I encounter when reviewing existing plans are, frankly, out of date. There were significant changes to federal estate tax law in 2010 and 2013. As a result, many of the techniques implemented in living trusts prior to these dates have become unnecessary and burdensome. The language of older trusts often requires assets to be divided upon the death of the first spouse. This can be useful if you are concerned about the surviving spouse making changes to distribution provisions, but for most families, this is not a concern. In that case, these trusts create a
significant burden on the surviving spouse to administer the deceased spouses trust. Often referred to A/B trusts, bypass trusts, or marital deduction trusts, these trusts all have similar provisions requiring the surviving spouse to perform special accounting and tax reporting. I have had too many meetings with surviving spouses, explaining the burdens of their trust administration, only for them to be confused and angered that this is not what they and their loved one intended. Other reasons to update your trust might include a change of successor trustees or a change in your distribution desires. If you have lost a spouse, it would be worth reviewing your plan to make sure you are administering the trust properly and your documents still serve your needs. Trust review and updating of estate plans is one of the services offered by the Law Office of Edward Younger. Brentwood Press Best Estate Planning Attorney 2016 and 2017. Reservoir from page 5A ect,” said Chris Ehlers, assistant director of public works for the City of Brentwood. “Going through this last drought with water quality getting really high in chlorides and salinity, it seems like it’s a very prudent thing for the city to do from a water-quality perspective. One of our strategic initiatives is to ensure water-supply resiliency by supporting local and regional projects such as the Los Vaqueros Reservoir expansion project mainly for supply and water-quality reasons.” The original reservoir at Los Vaqueros opened in 1998 with a capacity of 100,000 acre-feet. It was expanded to its current capacity of 160,000 acre-feet in 2012. This project will require that the dam be raised by 50 feet, and doing so will necessitate draining all of the water from the reservoir. Allen notes that the water will be sent south to the Bethany Reservoir and not simply dumped back into the Delta. “We built the reservoir so when water quality is good in the Delta we can pump water up into the reservoir, and we can keep that until water quality (in the Delta) starts to degrade,” said Allen. “Then we can release water into the Contra Costa Canal from Los Vaqueros. It blends with the Delta water so we have a consistent water quality.” In addition to the capacity expansion, a new pipeline will be built that will allow CCWD to move water to the south, though Allen is quick to point out that this new capability will not diminish CCWD’s commitment to its current partners. “(The project) will also include the construction of a pipeline that will go from our

Jennifer Allen, director of public affairs, Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) transfer facility south down to Bethany Reservoir,” explained Allen. “That is the conveyance that would be very key to getting water to partnering agencies in the South Bay and the Central Valley, including the wildlife refuges ... The ability to have a more regional facility is a benefit not only to our customers but Bay Area wide.” Assuming the project gets the requested funding, finalizing the design, obtaining construction permits and finalizing the funding agreements will require several years. Most construction is expect to occur between 2022 and 2028. For more information, visit https://bit. ly/2L331A1. To view a video, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CYBER CRIME If you are in the middle of a real-estate transaction, you have a target on your back for cyber criminals, because a large chunk of money gets transferred at the end of the transaction. They know you’ll have a lot of details to keep track of that you don’t normally do, so it’s a perfect opportunity for them to strike. The scams are getting REALLY hard to spot. Here are some tips to protect yourself. Wire instructions – Don’t rely on emailed information. Criminals are able to send out fake emails that look REALLY trustworthy. And don’t call the phone number in the email to verify. Only accept wire instructions in person from the title company or bank you are dealing with. Ignore any emails coming in at the last second telling you there has been a change to your wiring instructions. While it may be a little more inconvenient, you may want to consider walking a physical cashier’s check to the title company instead of wiring, just to be safe. Passwords – Some people post passwords
on their computer screens or on the walls near their computers. Take those down before you put your home on the market. Text or call – Emails are easy to hack. Or just make a phone call, so you recognize the person’s voice if you have critical or sensitive information to convey. Avoid public Wi-Fi – This is especially true when you are logging into your bank to move money around. This is an easy path for hackers to gain access to your accounts. An alternative is to use a private VPN. Double-check all emails before clicking any links or opening any attachments. Even when the sender appears to be someone you know, it’s good practice to hover your mouse over their name to see the actual email address of the sender. Finding a pet sitter Pet owners planning impromptu summer trips can book last-minute flight and hotel options in a snap online, but there’s one step on the travel checklist that can take time – securing a true professional to watch the pets while you’re away. Pet Sitters International (PSI), the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, advises pet owners to take the time to select a professional pet sitter to care for their pets. “When it comes to finding pet care, don’t prioritize convenience over quality,” explained Beth Stultz, PSI vice president. PSI advises pet owners to take the following steps to ensure they are hiring not just a pet lover but also a true pet-care professional:
Schedule an in-person meeting with any potential pet sitter.
While a phone call or a review of a pet sitter’s website or online listing may provide important information, there is no substitute for an in-person meeting at your home – with your pets present. An initial consultation will give you an opportunity to meet the pet sitter; see how they interact with your pets in your home; and review the sitter’s services, credentials and business practices.
Make sure you ask the right questions.
Pet owners can download a free petsitter interview checklist from the PSI website, which provides details about the seven important questions pet owners
Pet of the Week THE PRESS
should ask any potential pet sitter: • Do you have the proper business license required by the city or state? • Are you insured and bonded? • Can you provide proof of clear criminal history? • Can you provide client references? • Will you use a pet-sitting services agreement or contract? • Are you a Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS) or have you participated in other pet-care training, such as pet first aid? • Are you a member of a professional and educational association, such as Pet Sitters International?
Ask a professional pet sitter for a recommendation.
Many professional pet sitters find that their summer schedules get booked up quickly, which is why PSI recommends pet owners start the search for pet care as soon as possible. But if the professional pet sitter you initially contact is booked, be sure to ask them for a recommendation. Most professional pet sitters are happy to provide referrals to other reputable pet-sitting companies if their schedules are already full. PSI’s site also offers a free postal code search for U.S. and Canadian pet sitters as well as an international pet-sitter search, at www.petsit.com/locate. “Finding a pet sitter you trust allows you to truly enjoy your vacation,” PSI President Patti J. Moran said. To learn about PSI or becoming a professional pet sitter, visit www.petsit.com. – Courtesy of Pet Sitters International

New owners for Newberry venue by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer
Newberry Estate Vineyards has a new owner, and the name is likely a familiar one. Sean McCauley, owner of various commercial properties throughout the area including McCauley Olive Oil, has purchased the popular event location on Sunset Road in Brentwood. “We have been wanting to get a venue started for years, and when this became available, it just made sense to do it,” said McCauley. The storied property, owned by Sabrina and Jeremy Newberry, has been a venue destination since 2012, when the then-engaged couple and owners of the estate, were married there. Since then the Newberrys have hosted hundreds of weddings on-site and each year average approximately 50 special events. Sabrina said that she plans to continue working as a team with Sean’s wife, Maria, and their two daughters, ages 20 and 22, to enhance the already successful business. “The McCauleys are a great family, and watching the business continue to grow was important to me,” said Sabrina. McCauley added that the blending of his family’s olive oil business with the Newberry vineyards seemed a natural fit and enhanced his vision of growing the area’s tourism appeal.
Photo courtesy of Newberry Estate Vineyards
Newberry Estate Vineyards has been sold to Sean McCauley who plans to keep the popular venue as a wedding and event center while promoting ag-tourism. “We’re excited about bringing more agtourism to Brentwood, and I think this is a big push toward it … combining our olive oil with the Newberrys’ wine,” he said. The McCauleys will not officially take over the business side of the operation until November, and the Newberrys plan to remain in the home on the property for
at least the next year and a half. He added that the new name of the venue will likely be McCauley Estate Vineyards, but that the family has no plans to live on-site. “We probably won’t end up living there – we already have a home,” said McCauley. “We bought it for the beautiful gardens and the venue there. We’re all very excited.”
Sabrina is too. “I think the main thing here is that I just want it to be known to the public that things will be the same or better from here on out,” she said. “Our clients are going to be happy and continue to have their successful events.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

eight-hour drives to San Diego, but Georgia is 2,400 miles away and a bit harder to get to. It’s a great move for them, but I can’t help but hear the same fluttering sound parents hear
every time a kid moves out or farther away. From all indications, it’s already been a great move. They all love their new house, their big back yard, their new jobs, the friends they’ve already made. Their oh-bla-di, oh-bla-da is progressing well, and I’m both delighted and proud about that. As for the future, McCartney put it this way: “In a couple of years they have built a home sweet home, With a couple of kids running in the yard, Of Desmond and Molly Jones Happy ever after in the market place.” To which I can only add yessirma’ampleasethankyoudear. hung out at the water parks. When we got to U-picking, I got the chance to pass on the plea my father demanded. “Who wants to pick strawberries?” “I do! I do!” “Well, what do you say?” Not a single yessirma’mpleasethankyoudear. Chris may have forgotten to pass it along, or he may have wished it would go away. No matter, I taught ‘em. I have to add that, other than this small omission, Chris and Jen have done a fabulous job with the kids. They’ve taught them to love each other, to take care of people in need, and that The Beatles might just be the best band ever. “Oh-bla-di, oh-bla-da, life goes on, brah!” “La la how the life goes on!” Not the greatest Beatles song, but it’s the one that came on as Emma and I were on our way from some place to another that week. We belted out the lyrics as the tune blasted from the overtaxed speakers in my truck and out through the open windows to benefit the general public. In case you don’t recall, “Oh-bla-di, Oh-bla-da” is The Beatles’ 1968 song about Desmond and Molly, who meet, fall in love, get married, have kids and, as “life goes on!” they create their “home sweet home.” It was both a Gold Record and listed on several “Worst Songs Ever” lists. I realized later how appropriate the song was as we prepared for a big change. I am pleased that there will be no more hellish,

As a parent, it’s fulfilling to know you’ve got something your child needs. It’s heartening that they come to you in their moment of need. And it’s fun to make them beg. Mind you, I’m not talking about the important stuff like Just food, shelter and unconditional love. I’m ayin talking about making them beg for stuff they want, which usually involves sugar. “Who wants an ice cream cone?” “I do! I do!” “Well, what do Rick Lemyre you say?” “Yessirma’amplea sethankyoudear!” That’s what my dad made my brothers and me say, even though we knew he would eventually give us whatever it was anyway. And we said it, willingly, even though we knew we would get whatever it was anyway. It was just a silly exchange that let us express unabashed enthusiasm for an idea, stretch a happy moment out to enjoy a little longer and sneak in an unspoken “I love you” at the same time. The other day I got a chance to pass it along to my grandkids. Chris, Jen and the whole grandfamily were moving from San Diego to Georgia, and the kids stayed with their grandparents for a week before flying off to the other side of the country. We watched movies, went shopping and

Liberty alumnus Drew Gagnon, seen here pitching for the New York Mets last week after getting called up from his AAA team.
Liberty alumnus gets Major League call by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
Liberty alumnus Drew Gagnon could hardly believe he was being called up to make his Major League debut for the New York Mets last week. But taking the mound in front of 22,000 people at Citi Field quickly jolted him into reality. “I didn’t believe it at first, but then I found out it was actually real, so I was shocked,” Gagnon told NorthJersey. com. The 2008 Liberty graduate, an eightyear minor league veteran, pitched 4/2/3 innings, surrendering six earned runs and striking out three in the Mets’ 7-3 loss to Philadelphia.
The following day, Gagnon was optioned back to the Las Vegas 51s, the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, but his Major League moment won’t soon be forgotten. “(Pitching for the Mets) was awesome,” Gagnon told NorthJersey.com. “It was everything I could have hoped for. I wish I could have done better, but you know, stuff happens.” Gagnon admitted he was nervous heading into the start, which matched the feelings of his friends and family members who assembled to witness the event. Gagnon’s parents, two sisters and girlfriend flew to New York to watch his debut live; his brother and friends paused a bachelor party in Cabo San Lucas to watch the game; and 20 other friends and
family gathered inside Brentwood’s Buffalo Wild Wings to commemorate the occasion. “It was amazing,” said Deana Yoder, whose son grew up playing baseball with Gagnon. “He got great coverage. Just to see him grow from a young boy to what he is now is pretty incredible.” Gagnon’s Major League appearance was a testament to his perseverance on the diamond. The Milwaukee Brewers selected the 6-foot-4 right-hander in the third round (100th pick) of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft after three successful seasons at Long Beach State. He was traded to the Anaheim Angels in 2016 and signed by the Mets last year, but had spent eight years in the
minor leagues – between rookie ball and Triple-A – prior to his call-up. Gagnon was especially stellar for the Las Vegas 51s prior to his Major League call-up. In eight of his last nine starts for the Triple-A squad, he lasted at least six innings, surrendering two or fewer runs in five of those outings. He returned to the mound for the 51s on Sunday, giving up four runs and striking out six over five innings. His Major League start, however, is still on the minds of many. “In my book, he made it,” said Yoder. “It is every boy’s dream to be out there (in the Major Leagues). Even if it ends up just being one time, it came true.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net
Swimmers excel at East County Invitational by Michael Dixon Correspondent
Last weekend, Heritage played host to swimmers around the area in the East County Invitational. In total, swimmers from nine club teams competed in the event. This included three local teams, the Aqua Knights, Brentwood Dolphins and Antioch Delta Skimmers. Each team had a multitude of swimmers finish well and post times good enough to earn a spot in the Contra Costa County Meet. The Aqua Knights had a highly successful meet, posting a total of 29 county-qualifying times. Three different girls – Jewel Cooper, Alana Silva and Ella Roberts – qualified for four events. Cooper’s events were
in the 7- and 8-year-old girls’ division. Silva’s four events came in the 11-12 division, while Roberts were in the 13- and 14-year-old group. Kaela Scott in the 13-14 group qualified for three events. Morgan Nelson qualified in two different 7-8 division events, and Kendall Zogg qualified in one 15- to 18-year-old event. A pair of boys qualified for four events. Mason Lyman will represent his club in four different 13- and 14-year-old boys’ division events. Christian Webb will do the same in a quartet of 15-18 group events. Drew Antczak and Daniel Fowler each qualified in an event, as well. They will compete in the 7-8 and 11-12 divisions, respectively. The Brentwood Dolphins will also be well represented at county, especially in the girls’ division. Harper Lanpher (girls’
7-8) and Taleah Leopolo (girls’ 11-12) each earned a spot in four events. Ava Bieker (6 and under) and Olivia Sanchez (1314) both posted county-qualifying times in two events. In the boys’ division, Lucas Gonzales (6 and under) and Cody Wong (11-12) each qualified in one event. The Antioch Delta Skimmers also saw multiple swimmers post qualifying times. Like the Brentwood Dolphins and Aqua Knights, they had swimmer Tatum Trucks (girls’ 7-8) qualify in four different events. Maggi Gonzalez (girls’ 15-18) qualified in a pair of events in her own right. David Darrin-Bascomb (boys’ 15-18) also qualified for two events, while Aidan White (boys’ 15-18) earned a spot in one. Racing returns to the Antioch Speedway After taking a week off, the All Star Series racing program returns to Antioch Speedway this Saturday night. DIRTcar Late Models are back in action along with the A Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks and the Bay Area Hardtops. Only three events into season for the Late Models, but Jeff Decker once again leads the charge on the strength of two wins and a second-place finish. Rod Oliver trails Decker by 16 points on the strength of three top-four finishes. Dennis Souza trails Oliver by four points and has picked up a season-high second place finish already. Oliver and Souza each hope to be the next one to get a feature victory. But keep an eye on Rob Norris, Mike Hynes, Kimo Oreta, Paul Guglielmoni and two-time champion Richard Papenhausen. In the A Modified division, there was a close battle between Nick DeCarlo and reigning champion Bobby Motts Jr. DeCarlo has won four main events so far, but he leads the consistent Motts by only two points. Motts has a pair of seconds and three-thirds, though he is still searching for his first win of the season. DeCarlo has earned championships at Watsonville and Petaluma in recent seasons and would like to add Antioch to his list of credentials. At the moment, Motts is the only driver offering DeCarlo any resistance. Sean O’Gara runs a solid third in the

standings leading rookie Buddy Kniss by 34 points. Third-generation racer Kniss has climbed the ladder of divisions at the speedway from Dwarf Cars to Limited Late Models, and he’s held his own against the more experienced competitors in an A Modified. He leads Bobby Montalvo by 14 points and past champion Kellen Chadwick by 22 in a race for fourth. Chadwick is a three-time feature winner so far this year. Other drivers to watch this week include David Zeider, Ray Lindeman, Trent Wentworth and five-time champion Scott Busby. THIRD AMENDED CITATION TO PARENT JOSE NOGALES CASE NO.: A17-00050 SUPERIOR COURT OF CALIFORNIA CONTRA COSTA COUNTY Attorney for Petitioner: Anthony Binney In re the Adoption Petition of Anthony Binney, Petitioner, THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO JOSE NOGALES: By order of this court you are hereby advised that you may appear before the judge presiding in the Department 14 of this court on July 23, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. then and there to show cause, if any you have why Svetlana Tomova Binney should not be freed from your custody and control. The following information concerns rights and procedures that relate to this proceeding for the termination of the parental rights of JOSE NOGALES as set forth in Family Code Section 7860 et seq.: 1. At the beginning of the proceeding the court will consider whether or not the interests of JOSE NOGALES require the appointment of counsel. If the court finds that the interests of JOSE NOGALES require such protection, the court will appoint counsel to represent her, whether or not she is able to afford counsel. Svetlana Tomova Binney will not be present in court unless she requests or the court so orders. 2. If JOSE NOGALES appears without counsel and is unable to afford counsel, the court must appoint counsel for the parent, unless the parent knowingly and intelligently waives the right to be represented by counsel. The court will not appoint the same counsel to represent both Svetlana Tomova Binney and her birth father. 3. The court may appoint either the public defender or private counsel. If private counsel is appointed, he or she will receive a reasonable sum for compensation and expenses, the amount of which will be determined by the court. That amount must be paid by the real parties in interest, but not by the minor, in such proportions as the court believes to be just. If, however, the court finds that any of the real parties in interest cannot afford counsel, the county will pay the amount. 4. The court may continue the proceeding for not more than 30 days as necessary to appoint counsel and to enable counsel to become acquainted with case. Dated: June 21, 2018 By Deputy Clerk S. say about it.” Unable to reach his wife and son the next morning, Tracy viewed his security camera feed from work and saw police activity and yellow police tape strung across the front of his Brentwood home. He rushed home from his job in Walnut Creek and talked to police dispatchers as he made the trip. “I called dispatch to let them know, and they wouldn’t tell me anything. They said, ‘A detective needs to call you,’” Tracy said. “I was halfway home, and I called again because no detective had called. I had to wait a good half-hour (outside my house) before one of them came to talk to me.” The shocking news delivered by the detective was that Tracy’s wife of 30 years was the victim of a violent assault, and his son was in custody and a suspect in her murder. In the face of devastating tragedy, Tracy struggles to comprehend what happened that morning. “He was always the sweetest, nicest guy,” said Tracy. “Even for us it was shocking. Matt? That’s not the Matt we know. If it really was him, he had to have just snapped. Apparently he was in a psychotic state for the first few days he was (in jail). I haven’t talked to Matt at all. He has to call here, and he hasn’t. I don’t blame him. It’s just unimaginable that he would do something like that – especially with Marta who loved him so much, and he loved her.” Matthew lived in the Redmond family home with Tracy, Marta and Lucas, his 24-year-old brother. Matthew’s sister, 24-year-old Danielle – Lucas’ twin – lives nearby in Oakley. The Redmonds bought the house on Torrington Road in a quiet Brentwood neighborhood when they

moved to the area from Concord 23 years ago. Marta liked the area, and the homes were affordable. Tracy and Marta met while they were both working for a cable company. He was a dispatcher, and she was a supervisor. Marta quickly climbed the corporate ladder but left her job in 1999 after she was diagnosed with lupus. Health problems compounded for her as she later developed rheumatoid arthritis and chronic back and neck problems. “She was in constant pain, always – even with pain management and medication,” explained Tracy. “It helped a little bit, but she was still in pain. It seemed like she was always in pain, no matter what.” Matthew worked the overnight shift at the Chevron locations on Balfour Road. Tracy said that the shift suited his habit of staying up all night. When Matthew was let go from the job, Tracy said that it didn’t seem to bother him. “I would describe him as cheerful, easy-going, joyful,” said Analisa Quier, who worked with Matthew at Chevron. “He seemed like a good guy. I believe he actually introduced me to his mom when I was working there one time, and it seemed like they had a fine relationship.” Matthew was, according to Tracy, close with both of his younger siblings. His brother Lucas is developmentally disabled and suffers from a rare genetic disorder that manifests in a wide variety of symptoms. Matthew had himself been diagnosed with nonverbal learning disorder (NLD) when he was in kindergarten. Symptoms of NLD closely resemble Asperger’s Syndrome and include difficulty with reading comprehension, poor physical coordination, awkwardness, resistance to change and a lack of common sense.
“He was a great big brother. Him and Danielle were like best friends. That’s why she’s got a lot of anger toward him now, of course,” Tracy said. “They got along great. They loved each other. He was always real good with Lucas. He was a great big brother – always very patient with him.” Still, Marta and Tracy were facing mounting evidence in recent months that something had changed in Matthew. Tracy believes it is possible that drug use precipitated some of that change but said that Matthew had no history of using drugs. “There may have been drugs involved, (which) would have been a recent thing,” said Tracy. “It would have been within the last month or two possibly. I started to notice changes in him, and confronted him about it. He had been up, I think, like seven days straight before this happened, which was unusual. I mean, he’d go two or three days and then he’d sleep two or three days, like a common thing for him ever since he was out of high school ... He didn’t even sit down and rest or anything. It’s just really strange behavior.” The details of what happened on the morning of the murder are unknown at this point. Judging from text messages that Marta sent to Tracy, it appears that Matthew’s behavior became increasingly paranoid and frightening for Marta. “Marta, I guess, was concerned and wanted Danielle to come over – she had been scared of Matt,” Tracy said. “I noticed on her phone that she deleted the (texts) that we were talking about him. She told Danielle, ‘I’ve got to go. Matt’s coming.’ So she was being scared. Never in a million years (did I) think that he’d hurt her. I can’t blame myself for not staying home that day when I was worried. But I wish I had.”
Tracy believed that the morning of the murder was the first time that Marta was fearful of Matthew, though he went on to describe an incident that occurred several days earlier in which Marta had come into the house yelling for help after Matthew had grabbed her phone from her. He was convinced everyone was talking about him. “We were talking about it on text, too, besides talking in person,” said Tracy. “I was like, ‘Doesn’t he realize he’s acting crazy?’ And she said, ‘No, he thinks it’s all of us.’ He thought people were up in the trees watching him. He was really paranoid. He thought our whole family was out to get him. That was not normal behavior for him. It was all really pretty new. That’s why it was hard to comprehend – hard to think there could be an issue like what happened.” Now, with Matthew in the Martinez Detention Facility, Tracy is trying to reconcile his conflicting emotions. “I know he must be dying inside if he’s come back to the realization of what’s happened,” Tracy said as he struggled to hold back tears. “He’s still my son. I know Marta would be the first one in line to forgive him. I can’t say that I’ve completely forgiven him, but I don’t want to shun him either. I want to help him. I want to support him, even though, obviously, I absolutely don’t support the action. I still want him to know he’s still loved and still has a dad.” Matthew is next scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 15. A request to interview Matthew was submitted to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. According to the office representative, Matthew declined the request. To comment, visit www.thepress.net
real estate tax and are losing $893,781 a year. Many residents in the Shadow Lakes and Deer Ridge communities vehemently oppose the plans, believing the changes could increase traffic, strain city services, decrease property values and diminish their quality of life. They have already collected close to 3,000 signatures online and hundreds more in person in an attempt to stop the project. “This hearing should not have been
contingent on the applicant being ready or wanting or not wanting the hearing,” said resident Kathy Griffin. “As far as I knew, it was a hearing regarding the merits of the project.” Fellow opponent Chris Master said SunCoast’s request to delay the hearing indicates that the company knows it’s facing stiff opposition. “The developer is on the ropes and desperate, in my opinion,” he said. “I know the city will do the right thing – I pray the city will do the right thing.”
In order for the project to be approved in the future, the city council would need to adopt a Statement of Overriding Considerations determining that the specific economic, legal, social, technological or other benefits of the proposed project outweigh the unavoidable adverse environmental effects, Nolthenius said. Top workout trends of 2018 AMY SCHRADER
F
itness trends vary, and this year, high-intensity interval training, group training, yoga and bodyweight training are all at the top of the list.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is the most popular fitness trend this year because it burns a maximum number of calories in a short amount of time. HIIT is a cardio workout composed of short bursts of intense exercises lasting anywhere from 20 to 90 seconds, followed with bursts of less-intense exercises, which allow your body to have time to recover before you bounce back to more intense exercises. Typical HIIT workouts last 30 minutes, making it very convenient for people with busy schedules. see Trends page 6B

The Heath Hut in downtown Brentwood is a health food store with a modern approach to nutrition. Besides addressing physical health, the Health Hut offers products to improve one’s overall well-being. “Modern society has become more stressed and anxious, so these conditions need to be addressed if we are to remain functional and healthy,” said Sandra Hart, Health Hut clerk. “More health research has been done, and our distributors supply us with supplements that can overcome these problems.” The local health food store offers a selection of herbal and homeopathic vitamins; mineral supplements; remedies for children and adults; gluten-free foods; local

According to Hart, good health starts in your gut and can be improved with probiotics. “We are only as healthy as our gut, and we need to feed the good bacteria, so they are not overcome by the bad bacteria,” she said. “This is very important, especially as we age, so our immune system functions properly. In modern society, this is critical to our longevity.” Brentwood resident Lisa Richmond uses
probiotics to improve her health. “Probiotics were instrumental in helping me recover from some medical issues I was having, and I continue to take them to stay healthy,” said Richmond. Besides probiotics, there is a new superfood hitting the shelves. Moringa is an ancient plant rich in nutrients and antioxidants that historically has been used in Asia and Africa for its reputed health benefits, which include reducing inflammation. The Health Hut sells products that contain Moringa, including Bio Nutritional dried organic powder. “Moringa leaves are a complete source of protein and have many nutritional
benefits,” said Hart. “It can be used for an active lifestyle and contributes to overall health.” Ayurvedic foods are another popular type of health food. Ayurveda is India’s practice of holistic medicine, which combines certain foods and herbs together to balance a person’s overall health, digestion and immunity. Ayurvedic foods can be used to battle weight loss, sleep disorders, digestion issues, stress, anxiety, depression and other ailments. The Health Hut offers a few Ayurvedic specialty brands, including Organic India and Triphala. Another health trend that has been around for a few years is drinking vinegar, which is believed to help with detoxifying the body and weight loss. “Drinking apple cider vinegar with honey is alkalizing and is good in salads with olive oil,” said Hart. A few of the Health Hut’s most popular products are local honey and recent CBD (cannabidiol) hemp products. “The benefits of honey are that it can be used year-round to prevent pollen allergies,” said Hart. “The hemp oil, salve and muscle gels help many diseases and the pain and inflammation they cause.” The Health Hut is located at 161 Chestnut St., in downtown Brentwood. fingers and toes. This summer, people are opting for a more natural approach to nails in bright and vivid colors. “People don’t want to use harsh chemicals on their hands and nails anymore,” said Ladybug Nails manager Tina Nguyen. “We offer organic nails with no chemicals that dry in the air and contain calcium and vitamin E.” According to Nguyen, bright and bold neon colors are very popular, but for those who aren’t sure what color to go with, a classic French manicure in pink and white is perfect for summer. With sandal season upon us, pedicures are also in, featuring scents like lavender, mango, cucumber, jasmine, honeydew and other scents that are reminiscent of a beach vacation. When it comes to hair, highlights including balayage continue to be popular, but solid colors are also making a comeback, including platinum blonde. Single, one-dimensional colors are easier to maintain, and besides icy blonde, darker shades of

They are also cheaper than getting highlights.” As always, highlights and balayage are a great way to give your hair a sun-kissed look.
Balayage highlights are painted on, giving the appearance that the sun has naturally lightened your hair. “Balayage highlights are great, especially on virgin hair,” said Galloway. “You paint the hair with hair color, and since it’s not right at the root, you don’t have to come in and have it redone every few weeks. Trends from page 3B last the whole summer before you need a touch-up.” When it comes to summer cuts, the shag and bangs are making a comeback. This summer’s shag is a no-fuss hairstyle with a side part and natural layers. Long bangs are also popular, which can be brushed or clipped back. Boys’ hairstyles are also no-fuss for summer, which differs from popular girls’ styles, which are full of bright colors. “Long hair and fantasy colors, using extensions or actual colors, are popular with girls,” said Kim Solarski, Tangles Salon manager. “Mermaid colors are also very popular.” For boys, short and clean styles are in. “Popular boys’ cuts are shaved on the lower part of the head, longer on top and are often swooped to the side,” said Solarski. Finally, no summer look is complete without makeup. From dewy natural looks to sunset eyes, this summer’s makeup trends are dreamy. Nude looks are this summer’s go-to for makeup. Ditch the eyeshadow and stick with a good moisturizer and sunscreen, which will not only offer protection from the sun’s rays but will also give your skin a dewy look. Pairing it with a lip stain and mascara completes the simple, natural look. Another makeup trend is to give your face a sun-kissed appearance. “For the perfect summer sun-kissed makeup look, try our jojoba foundation for a weightless secret veil of color that will give you a natural radiance,” said Patricia

Barreda-LoPiano, owner of MADE Cosmetics. “Try a Candleglow foundation to add a kiss of sunlight and to highlight and accent your features; a lavender stick to awaken your eyes; a blushed lip and cheek stain for flirty cheeks and a rose pout bronzer for a natural, sunless tan.” Barreda-LoPiano also recommends using a 24/7 lip treatment to promote collagen while keeping your lips healthy and hydrated. Trends from page 1B “I thought I was fit until I did my first HIIT workout over two years ago,” said Brentwood resident Ryan Dourgarian. “I was blown away by the intensity of the workout.” According to Dourgarian, one of the biggest benefits to a HIIT workout is the EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) effect, which allows your body to continue to burn calories long after your workout is complete. For those needing a little motivation when they hit the gym, group training is the trend to check out. Group training or fitness classes, combine five or more people and are designed to be motivational and appropriate for multiple fitness levels. The extra perk is that they’re also social, so you might even make a few friends. “The main benefits to group training are motivation, accountability and camaraderie,” said Matthew Johnson, owner of I Love Kickboxing in Brentwood. “Group training pushes you harder, with others supporting you directly and indirectly; helps with accountability, because you are part of a team; and provides camaraderie, because it’s social and you’re amongst people with like interests who share a common goal of fitness.” If you don’t want to hit the gym and don’t own any equipment, body-weight training is a trend that can help you tone
and build strength. Body-weight training uses your own body weight during exercises, such as squats, lunges and push-ups. “Body-weight training is really simple and can be done almost anywhere, as you are using your own body weight to build muscle and burn fat,” said Johnson. Those looking for a workout that will improve their physical health and improve their mental health and relieve stress can try yoga. “The benefits of having a regular yoga practice are endless,” said Stacia McConnell, manager of Bliss Hot Yoga. “It improves your flexibility, builds muscle strength, increases blood flow, makes you happier, helps you focus, lowers blood sugars, improves your balance, releases tension in your limbs and much more.” The last workout trend of 2018 – personal training – is perfect for people looking for a personalized workout routine. Personal training not only helps people reach their fitness goals but also provides motivation and feedback from a licensed professional. Bliss Hot Yoga is located at 5865 Lone Tree Way, Suite L, in Antioch. For more information, call 925-732-7803 or visit www.bliss-hotyoga.com. Checking on your health DAWNMARIE FEHR
A
midst the hurry of our daily lives, it can be easy to let some things slide off the to-do list.
One thing that should always stay near the top is our health. In addition to your yearly visit, your doctor will recommend other health screenings based on your age and gender. In some cases, where health and family history indicate, your doctor may recommend screenings at an earlier age. For adults between the ages of 18 and 39, the list is fairly short. Most adults should have an eye exam every five years, and both men and women should visit a dermatologist each year for a skin exam. Dr. Robert Beer of Balfour Dermatology in Brentwood said that skin exams are more important now than ever and often covered by insurance companies. “Skin cancer can affect people at a very early age,” Beer explained. “Other cancers develop over time, but skin cancer can affect teenagers and those in their 20s and 30s.” Women should begin getting a pap smear every three years between the ages of 18 and 30, then every five years after age 30, provided the results are normal. Men should be screened for lipid disorders every five years starting at age 35. Any individuals who are sexually active
should be tested annually for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV and syphilis. At age 40, the list grows. Women should have a mammogram when they turn 40; beginning at age 50, they should have one every two years. Men who turn 40 should have a conversation with their doctor about testicular and prostate cancer screening, as experts differ in opinion on the necessity of screenings and self-exams. Once you turn 40, you should have an eye exam every two to four years. At age 55, that should increase to one to three years. At age 50, everyone’s favorite test should be scheduled: a colorectal cancer screening. At age 75, women can discuss with their doctor the benefits and limitations of continuing with their mammograms. This is all in addition, of course, to those dental cleanings every six months. Dentists are looking for more than cavities when they dig around in your mouth. “There’s lots of things your mouth will tell us, like if you’re anemic or diabetic,” said Debbi Edgar, a dental hygienist with over 30 years of experience in Antioch. “We do a visual exam and palpitate the tissue looking for joint pain, arthritis and lumps or bumps that can be cancerous.” As you develop your health-conscious to-do list, keep in mind that certain exams are costly and sometimes unnecessary. Talk to your doctor about which ones you can forego.
