For 92 years, Brentwood’s Veterans Memorial Building, on 1st Street in Brentwood, has helped serve as an emotional and historical sanctuary for former and current comrades-in-arms. Now it’s the building that’s in need of some help. The building’s 60-year-old kitchen needs to be upgraded to make it more attractive to event organizers who rent the facility. Money received from those events are the main fundraising mechanism for maintenance. “Our only way of doing things there is to raise money,” said Frank Rehm, commander of the see Vets page 22A

The City of Brentwood is in negotiations with Great Wolf Resort to possibly bring a site to East County. The mega-parks are North America’s largest water resorts.
A wave of excitement is hanging over Brentwood with news of North America’s largest family of indoor waterpark resorts possibly opening a site in the city. “There is a lot neither side knows yet, but the most important part is the sides have started the discussion, and that is where we are at,” said Brentwood City Manager Gus Vina about discussions with Great Wolf Resorts Inc. The company operates 13 parks around the nation, with locations featuring an indoor water park, a hotel, family entertainment centers, restaurants, retail stores and meeting rooms fit for conferences and seminars.
“This is big; this could light up East County,” said Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor, who noted that the 50-acre resort would likely go along Lone Tree Way and Sand Creek Road, right off Highway 4. The city began talking with the Wisconsin-based company about six months ago, but no formal negotiations have taken place, Vina said. It’s believed that Brentwood is competing with Gilroy in Santa Clara County for the Northern California location. Great Wolf Resorts Inc. did not return calls for comment. “The key right now is for the two sides to continue to talk to see if there is any traction to move this thing forward,” Vina said. see Waterpark page 22A
