Celebration for a pair of milestones by Samie Hartley Staff Writer Since Brentwood has been named a Playful City by KaBOOM! for the third consecutive year, the Brentwood Parks and Recreation Department is pulling out all the stops to show that this East County community is one of the best at the art of play. Because City Park is currently under construction, Play-bor Day (so named in honor of Monday’s holiday) will be held this year at Veteran’s Park. The change in venue will be complemented by the day’s sister event, the Brentwood Family Aquatic Complex’s 10th anniversary celebration. “We are so excited about this year’s Play Day,” said Recreation Supervisor Barbie Gary. “While the spirit of Play Day remains the same, we’ll be at a new park, so we’ve adapted to Veterans Park’s amenities. This year we’ll have a scavenger hunt, where kids and their families need to visit the various animal statues in the park to look for clues. And as always we’ll have bubbles, chalk art and games for kids of all ages to enjoy. Then we have the aquatic center’s birthday right after that. So if you have nothing to do on Labor Day, come out for a party at the park.” A park improvement project will also be incorporated into this year’s celebration, but even the tiny helpers can pitch in. Gary said

guests will have a chance to add fresh mulch around the trees – a simple activity that even little ones can enjoy. The message of Play Day is to get kids outside and active. According to KaBOOM! (a national nonprofit organization emphasizing the importance of play), children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation and are spending an average of four hours per day viewing electronic media. Lack of play is thought to exacerbate the current increase in childhood obesity. According to KABOOM!, play is more than just having fun. It enhances children’s learning readiness, learning behaviors and problem- solving skills. Play-bor Day will be held Monday, Sept. 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. Play-bor Day participants can then take a short jaunt to the aquatic complex’s celebration of its 10th birthday with hundreds of its closest friends. During the hours of 3 and 5 p.m., admission to the pool will be $2. Once inside, guests will be treated to games, contests and, of course, birthday cake. Gary said the first 200 guests will receive a special souvenir to commemorate the pool’s milestone. The Brentwood Family Aquatic Center is located at 195 Griffith Lane, adjacent to Veterans Park. Thousands celebrate Art, Wine and Jazz by Rick Lemyre Staff Writer

A Friday night windstorm flipped a dozen canopies set up for the ninth annual Brentwood Art, Wine and Jazz Festival last weekend, but because the artists had yet to arrive, no damage was done to the art. By Sunday afternoon, it was the organizers, artists and visitors who were flipping over the two-day event. “By far, this is the most successful festival in its history,” an exhausted but smiling Brentwood Art Society President Jack Gaughan said as the event drew to a close Sunday. “It has become a full, family fun event. And some of the merchants are going crazy over how much business they’ve done.”

Thousands of people enjoyed a leisurely stroll amid the paintings, sculpture, jewelry and information booths, sipping wine or beer and enjoying foot-tapping jazz emanating from the venue’s two stages. With City Park closed for the construction of the new civic center downtown, the festival was moved to the Streets of Brentwood. “I like the activities and everything, but the location is the best thing,” said Brentwood resident Matt Brown. The activities this year included an expanded palette of things for children. The Kids Hands-on Activities area featured watercolor painting, tile decorating and dancing. They made and played musical instruments and sculpted their whimsies out of clay under the guidance of Brentwood resident and

Berkeley-based ceramicist Michael Grejsen. “She’s learning techniques of how to stick things together,” said Brentwood’s Susan Coss as her 6-year-old granddaughter, Penny, crafted a Shih Tzu. “At this age they have no fear (of trying new things). They enjoy this festival so much, we come every year. This is so wonderful for our community.” In the center of the festival, sand sculptors Bill Rose and Larry Safady, regulars at the Art, Wine and Jazz Festival as well as the CornFest, created a 10-foot-tall castle surrounded by a mermaid and other sea creatures. Asked when the sculpture would be finished, Rose responded, “Great art is never finished, it’s just abandoned.” Much of the art created at the event wasn’t abandoned, however. “As someone

said earlier, can you imagine how many refrigerators will have an original piece of art on them tonight?” Gaughan said, beaming. On Saturday, the Society honored its Artist of the Year, Ron Beatty. Beatty, whose work was displayed at the Festival, lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. Also on display was the work of hundreds of students, whose creations were posted on fences lining the sidewalks and capturing the attention and admiration of passersby. “There was one piece of surrealism, done by a middle school kid, that blew me away,” said Mitch Wagner of Stockton. “If you asked me when I was that age, I probably would have guessed that Sir Realism was a knight in shining armor.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

Learning Boat Speak There is a simple but inescapable truth when stepping aboard anything that floats: Landlubbers and mariners have different definitions for simple words and gear. Two of my biggest peeves on boats are referring to “ropes and bumpers.” To be clear, ropes are used to tie ON THE a load bound for the dump and a bumper is ATER the hard chrome plated appendage on the same pickup truck protecting your radiator from calamity. Please, on a vessel they are “lines and fenders.” Some might CAPT. JON question: who really BLOOM cares? While on a boat, referring to the right and left side is not really wrong; however, the terms “starboard” and “port” leave no ambiguity as to orientation of the observer. They are clear and concise. Like the specialized terminology of many other professions, nautical terms are rooted deep in tradition and history. Even recreational boaters can benefit from what I call Boat Speak. Using recognized terms gives us the means of accurate communication. It is a common language that unites all mariners throughout the world. Think about your own professional or other leisure-time affiliations, where meaning is conveyed in many seemingly obscure words often misunderstood as pretension by outsiders. If

you aren’t really in the know, trying to fake it is obvious to anyone within earshot. Beyond avoiding embarrassment, use of recognized Boat Speak avoids the potential for miscommunication when docking, rafting up, anchoring out, navigating or responding to an emergency. “Make fast a bow line to the starboard cleat” leaves nothing open to interpretation and no explanation is necessary if your crew is also bilingual. Granted, on smaller boats you can get away doing everything yourself without much communication, or by pointing and using words like “thingy.” Boat Speak is not critical. Consider broadening your boating to a yacht charter in Washington’s San Juan Islands, or maybe the Caribbean. Boat Speak is the first indication of your knowledge and experience during the check-out ride. In addition, docking a 40-footer in a crosswind requires quick decisions and fast action. A common language makes this possible with your crew. My kids all get the Captain Speak first, followed by the interpretation if necessary. You’d be surprised how quickly your “crew” will pick it up if it’s used consistently. Should an emergency occur, Boat Speak makes communication with the Coast Guard (VHF Ch.16) or Sheriff’s Dispatch (925-3834904) efficient. For example, conveying your position decisively and accurately will get help on its way sooner, often when response time is crucial. Always know where you are – both the body of water being traveled see Boat Speak page 21A

Ready to Run For Fun’ds by Samie Hartley Staff Writer

Kids don’t normally associate running with fun, but next week students in the Brentwood Union School District will be lacing up their shoes for a good cause. The inaugural Brentwood Run For Fun’ds is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11, and there is still plenty of time to sign up to participate. This district-wide event, put together with help from all of the district parents’ clubs, is a community effort to raise money to support BUSD’s eight schools in response to recent budget cuts. BUSD Superintendent Merrill Grant is inspired by the effort the parents have put forth to get this event off the ground. “This grassroots approach is very timely,” Grant said. “With all the news about the budget

cuts, folks were asking themselves, ‘What can we do to help?’ and this Run For Fun’ds is a great way to raise money while having fun at the same time. “It’s rare to have a district-wide fundraiser like this, but this is a win-win situation. We’ll be raising money for our schools while getting the kids outside to participate in a healthy activity. Brentwood Run For Fun’ds Committee Co-chair Leann Weibert said the event has evolved into a walk-a-thon rather than a 5K run. “At first, we thought a run would be a good way to get people out to support the schools, But we wanted an event that anyone can participate in, so the event is a walk. Having a blast with American history by Samie Hartley Staff Writer

“I’m about to make some noise,” declared historian Roy Wells as students at Edna Hill Middle School let out a collective OMG gasp. It’s not every day a man comes to campus with a gun and isn’t tackled by police officers. As Wells aimed his 18th-century British Brown Bess, loaded with a blank, the silent crowd of students and teachers covered their ears awaiting the roar of the blast, but no one anticipated the magnitude of the “pop” that could be heard throughout campus. Earlier this year, Wells treated the eighth-grade Bobcats to a discussion about the Civil War,. But this time around he was talking to a new group of students about the nitty-gritty of what really happened during the American War of Independence in the 1770s. “How many of you think history is the dullest subject they teach you in school?” Wells asked prior to his presentation. As nearly every hand in the crowd of approximately 100 students quickly shot into the air, Wells nodded in agreement. “I know. I know,” Wells told the students. “But it’s not history that’s boring. Our history is filled with adventure. It’s the way the state asks your teachers to teach history that is the dull part. If I had to learn about history from a textbook that just listed dates and important events, I’d be bored too.” So rather than bore the students, Wells, dressed in eraappropriate attire, discussed the little-known facts about the Revolution, such as what type of weapons were used by the Americans and the British, how female spies were used to gain information from the British and why the French really got involved in the war. To explain what soldiers’ lives were like, Wells dressed student volunteers in authentic clothing from the period and

And the volunteers got to feel it as Wells strapped them down with cartridge boxes and haversacks. While the demonstration was an eye-opener for students, history teacher Phil Rodriquez said the students were most excited about the presentation’s conclusion: the firing of muskets. “The kids, in general, thought his insight was interesting and were particularly fascinated by his firing of the rifles,” he said. “The sound they produced was a shock to many. I reminded my class that these rifles and muskets were being fired a couple hundred at a time. Could they imagine that? That debunks a lot of what Hollywood feeds us as reality.” Debunking Hollywood’s portrayal of history is one of the main reasons Wells takes his historical presentations throughout the Bay Area – a task he undertakes voluntarily without monetary compensation. He is simply gratified knowing that kids are experiencing history beyond textbooks.

Edna Hill Principal Kirsten Jobb agreed. While students will remember the sound of the gun fire or the scalping demonstration, in which one of their peers bravely stood in as a model while Wells explained how the procedure was conducted and why, Jobb hopes that students will understand what a privilege it is to experience Wells’ presentations. “I’m not sure if it’s really sunk in for most of the students, but it is such an honor for Roy to share his time with us. For free no less,” Jobb said. “For as much information and authenticity he brings to his presentations, we’d never be able to afford him, so we’re really lucky to have him. I just hope that kids absorb this material and rethink how they feel about history. A lot of the sixth- and seventh-graders are already looking forward to seeing the presentation when they’re eighth-graders. Plant could power more jobs, money by Dave Roberts Staff Writer City officials are looking forward to the construction of a new power plant on Wilbur Avenue, not only for the construction and operational jobs that will be created but also for the $1.7 million, perhaps more, that Mirant Corporation officials have pledged to contribute to Antioch’s government in exchange for the city’s support for the project. “They have already been very, very generous to our community, and we look forward to them starting construction,” said Councilwoman Martha Parsons. “It’s very eco-friendly and it will be a peaker plant – so it will kick in when the wind stops (generating electricity at wind turbines). We are looking forward to the construction jobs and the people they will hire when they come.” The natural-gas-fired, 760-megawatt Marsh Landing Generating Station was approved last week by the California Energy Commission (CEC). Construction is scheduled to start later this year, with commercial

operation beginning in the summer of 2013. It will be on a 27-acre site next to Mirant’s existing power plant, which features a large smokestack. “By ensuring that this natural gas facility met all appropriate environmental, regulatory and technical concerns, the Commission determined the energy needs of the Bay Area will be balanced with protecting the local environment,” wrote CEC Vice Chair James Boyd in a press release. A year ago Mirant officials brought their proposal to the Antioch City Council for its support, although the site on Wilbur Avenue is actually outside of Antioch’s city limits and under county control. The focus of the council’s discussion was the $1.7 million that company officials pledged to donate to Antioch for community benefits, most of which would be doled out in the first few years of the plant’s operation. Councilman Brian Kalinowski said he appreciated the offer, but felt it would be inadequate compensation for a plant that could be in operation for 50 years. “I’m not trying to

say, ‘Shame on you for $1.7 million,’” he said. “But if we polled everybody in the audience, they would say, ‘For 30 to 50 years, that’s a hell of a bargain.’” Kalinowski asked Mirant California President John Chillemi to commit to increasing that amount. Chillemi responded that he didn’t have the authority to make that commitment on his own, but added, “We have an existing business here and we have shown a corporate commitment. But with this type of investment … I would anticipate stepping up to the community even more so.” Councilman Reggie Moore encouraged him to follow through on that, saying, “Mirant’s been a good partner in this community on educational issues, the library and other things. It would be wonderful to see you folks continue to show the corporate commitment that you have always shown. Particularly in these tough times, we are looking to our partnerships with the corporate world to help bridge this (funding) gap.” The new plant would be located next to PG&E’s new Gateway Generating Station.

Honored at the Fair Members of Knightsen 4-H celebrated a victory at the California State Fair last month, where the Contra Costa County display received the Silver Award in the Counties Exhibit Competition. Thirty counties competed to showcase their most unique attributes. Knightsen 4-H leader and County Booth Coordinator Deborah Spinola designed the Contra Costa booth, top photo, to reflect the county’s rich agricultural heritage, from fresh fruits and vegetables to fine wines. LUHSD gets $237K grant The Liberty Union High School District has been notified that it will receive $237,138 over three years to provide a Tobacco Use Prevention and Education (TUPE) Program that will reach every student in the district. Funding from the California Department of Education will provide classroom materials, professional development, and supplies for tobacco education and prevention activities at school and in the community. The district will engage the elementary schools, community and faith-based organizations, and business partners to participate in the TUPE program to provide alternatives to tobacco use – such as

Time to think outside the school box The drive along Sellers Avenue and Delta Road is among the more scenic in East County as you pass by farmland, orchards, goats, horses, produce stands and quaint farmhouses. Unfortunately, these roads, like almost all rural roads in the area, are narrow and without shoulders, making them DITORIAL potentially dangerous to drive on and definitely dangerous to walk or bicycle on. The potentially unsafe roads and three railroad track crossings nearby make the 76-acre area at Sellers and Delta roads a spot that wouldn’t come to mind as a good place for a 2,200-student high school. Yet that has been the Liberty Union High School District’s plan for the past five years. Naturally, concerns have been raised about student

safety, especially those on foot or bikes. It’s vital that solutions be found to ensure their safety before ground is broken on the high school. The first student injury or death will prompt lots of second-guessing and probably lawsuits. So we give a pat on the back to the LUHSD board for taking a step back last week and postponing the decision on the environmental impact report for the site of what would be the district’s fourth high school. Discussion needs to continue between LUHSD staff and officials from the county, Brentwood and Oakley on ways to ensure student safety if the decision is made to go ahead with a high school at that site. But we consider this a good opportunity to rethink the location and, in fact, think out of the box. As LUHSD Board Member Steve Barr pointed out, things have changed in the past five years. One of those things is the success of smaller

Editor: At our local Heritage High School in Brentwood there is a new school rule being strictly enforced that requires each child to wear around their neck a large high school identification card (with photo and personal student ID number fully displayed) attached to a lanyard. These photo IDs and lanyards must be worn every day, all day long, while students are on campus. If they are caught not wearing their photo ID and lanyard, they are punished. They get one warning, and if they are caught again, they are given detention. Multiple infractions lead to even more serious punishments, including suspension. The school says the new rule protects students by making it more difficult for nonstudents to enter the campus, or for quick identification in case of a medical emergency. I believe this rule is an infraction against students’ rights to privacy. I also believe that this school rule goes against students’ civil liberties, including the right to be protected under the law against unreasonable search and seizure, and even false imprisonment. (False imprisonment is the restraint of

I believe students should be allowed to carry their student IDs in their wallets, and that students should have to show their IDs to campus authorities only if there is justifiable cause to do so. Students should not be required to publicly display their name, photo and personal student identification number all day, every day while attending public high school. This is not the military or a prison. Students should not be “getting carded” daily on campus. School administrators should be concentrating on educating the children, not on policing them for “breaking a rule” that is clearly unconstitutional to begin with. I also believe that the lanyards could have the potential to actually cause harm to students if they are worn or used improperly. I hope that parents will write or call the principals and administrators of our Brentwood schools and let them know that we need to protect our childrens’ identities and protect their civil rights and civil liberties. ANTIOCH Aug. 20, 8:45 p.m. Officers of the Antioch Police Department were dispatched to a Bay Area hospital where a 4-year-old boy had been transported via helicopter suffering from a traumatic brain injury. The boy was placed into a medically induced coma while a portion of his skull was removed in order to alleviate the swelling of his brain. The boy had been in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, 28-yearold Aaron Handy, on Peppertree Way in Antioch when the injury occurred. When the mother returned and found her child unresponsive, Handy tried to persuade her not to call 911 for him. Handy then fled her home. The Antioch Police Department’s investigation suggests that the injury was not an accident. On Aug. 25, APD detectives located Handy at a residence in Stockton. He confessed to injuring the boy out of anger and was arrested and booked on charges of felony child abuse. He is currently being held in Contra Costa County. The County District Attorney’s Office will review the case and make a filing decision. Those with information regarding the case should call Detective Robert Green at 925-779-6932. The End of the Appreciation Game The New Great Investment

by Joan Grimes, Esq. Yesterday, I was talking to a new homeowner. The homeowner has a very good job and he was telling me that he was so happy to get the house and he knew it would be a great investment with the market being down. The house had all the bells and whistles. As I was trying to process his comment, I calculated that he had just paid approximately 40 times the average rental cost of the house. I realized then and there that we have learned very little in the last 2 years about what constitutes a Great Investment. So maybe I am just talking to myself, but here is my thinking about a “Great Investment.” 1. Invest In Yourself. We all came to this show without a dime and we are all leaving the same way. Be a life-long learner. The average person will have 3 careers in their lifetime and we will need training for each of them. Training does not fall out a tree and it is not usually easy. New is uncomfortable at first because it is new. 2. Saving for retirement is your Best investment. Max out your retirement plan, IRA etc and it will be the best tax shelter you can have in this lifetime. Money in the bank is money you can use to buy groceries. Until we figure out a way to eat sheetrock, I am going to recommend saving the first 10% of all gross income for retirement. Never ever use your retirement savings to get out of debt or for curing a default on a mortgage. Retirement savings are protected in Bankruptcy. 3. A home is Shelter, not an investment. An investment is something other than the roof over your head that you buy and sell in order to make money. Your home should be the least of your investments with the majority of your money in diversified funds for retirement. If you are going to buy shelter, make sure you can pay it off before you retire or make sure the Purchase Price/Rent ratio is 10 or less. If the ratio is less than 10, we can be fairly confident that if you needed to sell, there

will be a market for the property. Anything over 10, you are back in the appreciation game. 4. Cut Your Losses. If you are not saving for retirement, what are your prospects for savings? Can you pay off your credit card bills in the next 12 months? If you own a house, do you have a fixed rate mortgage that you can payoff by the time you retire? Is your house worth what you owe against it? I am convinced that the truly smart people realize that “Life is the Graceful Execution of Plan B”. The appreciation game is over and the smart people are moving forward as though it was always the Plan. Maybe they didn’t win in the end, but they are not going to be stuck permanently in a game that is over. If you are having financial problems, seek legal counsel. You did not make this real estate appreciation game or the credit card meltdown. There are serious personal liability and tax consequence of a short sale and foreclosure. Make sure you understand your legal rights prior to undertaking either a short sale or allowing your property to be foreclosed. Do not lose sleep and your sanity worrying about financial problems. Shortly After a Short Sale… …what happens? When can I purchase a home again? How long will it affect my credit? Is it worse than a foreclosure? Can the bank come after me for the difference between the sales price and my current loan? These questions according to Professor Wachter, a real estate and finance professor at the Wharton School of Business, are “the kind of conversation that’s going on at cocktail parties, at swimming pools.” Okay, maybe not swimming pools in the middle of our record setting cool summer season, but come on, you know where I’m going with this. Yahoo “short selling my home” and over 509,000,000 results appear, 1.7x the 186,000,000 results you receive when searching “NFL preseason.” It’s a fact short sales are on the minds of the people, and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has taken notice. Earlier this year the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) re-wrote – and actually created based on current market circumstances – their borrower eligibility guidelines for short-sellers looking to once again own a home. These changes went into effect immediately, and for any past homeowner that has gone through a short-sale, these changes are huge! If you stayed current on every bill you had – including your mortgage for the last twelve months – while going

through the short-sale process you can purchase another home the day after your short sale closes. According to FHA’s Mortgagee Letter 09-52, as long as you did not pursue a short-sale agreement simply to “take advantage of declining market conditions, and purchase at a reduced price a similar or superior property within a reasonable commuting distance,” then you are eligible for an FHA insured loan. However, if you were late on your mortgage, late on any revolving debt, or in the process of foreclosure while going through your short sale then all bets are off. Potential buyers in cases such as this have to wait a mandated thirty-six months (three years) before purchasing a home through FHA. So while many of the original questions in this column remain a mystery solved only on a “lender-tolender” case-by-case basis, we now have a nationally recognized policy for how shortly after a short-sale you can purchase a home. So my motion is that we postpone this and get back to the table with the stakeholders and try to find a resolution to a site that we can’t seem to agree on.” Barr’s motion followed requests by Oakley Community Development Director Rebecca Willis and by Frank Spinelli, who lives near the site and has actively opposed its conversion into a high school for years, to postpone certification of the EIR. They also complained that they had not been notified in advance that the board was planning to take action that night, as they had been promised in March when the EIR certification was last on the agenda (and subsequently pulled off). Spinelli asked the board members whether they had read the EIR “from the first page to the last page, including all questions concerns and responses. I feel that if you have, there is no way you would accept or certify this EIR for the fourth high school with as many unanswered questions and vague responses. If you did not read it, we should not be here tonight discussing it.” Willis reminded the board that “Oakley has been participating in a collaborative effort with Liberty Union High School District staff, city of Brentwood, Contra Costa County to identify the public safety impacts, the infrastructure that’s needed for the fourth high school. There’s been six meetings. In those meetings there’s been progress identifying essential facilities for life safety as well as the cost, the timing. “At the last meeting we were told that there were some issues that came up with the bond, and the EIR would be put on hold indefinitely until the bond could be resolved. When the board knew the bond was good, the meetings would resume. We thought there was still a collaborative effort going on. We didn’t know that the band broke up. We didn’t know that the school board was going to be taking action tonight. “Our main concern is that … there’s still significant public safety issues that have not been resolved. We feel they need to resolved before the EIR can be certified. Secondly, we feel that the solutions have not been fully explored. In the collaborative effort there was progress but there wasn’t a solution, and it got cut short. So we feel the solutions haven’t been explored. Finally, we feel we did not receive the required notice of this meeting, which would have allowed us to more fully analyze where the school board is at and to have meaningful comments. We are respect-

fully requesting that the board continue action so that solutions can be found.” After the meeting Willis said, “We’re pleased that they are going to continue, so that we can continue to explore some solutions to these problems. Public safety is really, really important. And being able to get the kids and staff to school safely, that needs to be figured out.” Spinelli echoed her view, saying, “I’m pleased that they postponed their decision. I was really surprised that they did that. The kids’ safety is the most important part – with the railroad tracks around there, the propane tanks, the farming that continues to go on. There are more suitable sites out there. We just need to look for them. Like Mr. Barr said, times have changed in the last five years, and we need to adjust with those changes and go forward.” The main challenge with the 76-acre site is providing safe access to it along two-lane rural roads with no shoulders. Sellers Avenue and Delta Road in front of the high school will be widened and a signal light put in at that intersection and improvements made at several nearby intersections and the three nearby railroad crossings. But it’s likely that many students will still be walking and bicycling to and from school without the benefit of sidewalks as a buffer between them and passing cars. And some students will be crossing railroad tracks. The ad-hoc committee has discussed providing safer paths and trails in the area as well as finding ways to reduce flooding in the school site’s storm water runoff area. Barr said in a phone interview Tuesday that the East Cypress Road corridor, where thousands of houses are planned to be built and the road improved with sidewalks, would be a better location for the high school. “The school should be closer to those improvements and the homes those students would be traveling from,” he said. Five years ago, when the economy was booming, developers had optioned much of that land. But now sites along the corridor may be available, he said. As a result, development fees would help pay for the necessary road and other infrastructure improvements, instead of adding those costs to a bond measure to build the fourth high school. Barr said the other significant change in the last five years is that the rate of student enrollment growth has decreased from 12 percent per year to 3 percent, reducing the urgency for a new high school. Truancy from page 1A visits – knocking on doors, rousting parents and children out of bed, and in some cases actually picking up and driving students to school. “Sure, I’ve brought kids to school,” said Hetrick. “I had one student I called who had missed their ride to school, and mom was home but without a car, and public transportation had already left. So I said, ‘I’ll be there in 15 minutes’ and went and picked them up. Sometimes circumstances get in the way of attendance and we reach out to do what we can to help.” Some, however, support a less kind and gentle approach to truancy. Take for example, Senate Bill 1317, which would make truancy a misdemeanor and allow parents to be fined and/or serve jail time if their child is a chronic absentee. Under the California Education Code, a student missing more than 30 minutes of instruction without an excuse three times during the school year must be classified as a truant. SB 1317 takes it a step further and proposes that parents of children who miss more than 10 percent of the school year be fined up to $2,000 and/or serve as much as a year in prison. Too severe? No, according to McBride. “I think truancy needs to hit the parent where it hurts,” she said. “I would support either jail time or the fine, and as a teacher I would also support it. At the elementary level it’s not the child’s choice whether or not they come to school. It’s the parent’s job,

Steed also serves as the chairperson for the East County chapter of SARB (Student Attendance Review Board), a nationwide program that works to assist families in achieving prompt, consistent attendance. She believes that through outreach and positive communication with parents, truancy can be solved through less dramatic means. “I’m always hesitant to be punitive,” said Steed. “And the goal of SARB is to provide intervention services to families, and it is successful. Sometimes it’s just a matter of providing transportation or buying someone an alarm clock. I had one little guy this year who wasn’t getting to school and mom worked and he lived too far away to walk, so the community was able to get together and buy him a bike. SARB is an opportunity to bring all our resources together, and really it is the last chance before it becomes a juvenile law problem. Regardless, school officials and educators alike agree that getting students to school and keeping them in the classroom remains job one. “Our goal is to have 97 percent attendance or better,” said Hetrick. “When kids are younger they are dying to get to school and then as they get older it becomes a little different. Different kind of fencing in Oakley by Michael Dixon Correspondent

When most Oakleyites think about fencing, they’re more than likely focused on their back or side yard. But a sportier kind of fencing has come to the city in the form of a class taught by Robert Tabacco of Concord’s Swordplay Fencing Academy. Tabacco, who has engaged in swordplay for more than 20 years, sees a lot of good in children learning how to duel. “It is a very, very good game,” he said. “It has a lot of history and it has a lot of drama in it too, because it’s not the biggest, strongest and fastest who wins. I’ve overpowered smaller people than me plenty of times, but I’ve also been just outsmarted by smaller people plenty more times. So it’s very much a different dynamic. “Something that I think is very important with kids and sport is that that’s really their first exposure to learning that they are capable or competent. They are presented with a challenge, given the tools they need to overcome that challenge, and they go out, sort it out and try and do it.” Fencing also provides kids with the opportunity to learn from failure. “A lot of it is getting hit and losing,” said Tabacco. “Another important thing with kids in sport is learning to deal with failure. So, ‘I tried to parry but they went around and hit me. And everything I do, they seem to hit

The swords are not sharp; they are not dangerous. They are designed to bend to relieve pressure when you hit. If there is too much pressure, they are designed to break, and then they are

designed to break with no jagged edges. “The sport has hundreds of years of safety involved in it. And if you follow the rules, it’s one of the safest games out there. It’s very combat-oriented. Not enough so that it’s a martial art. It’s a martial art if you are training martially, if you are training to break someone. If you are trying to hit and get a point, it’s a game, not a martial art.” As a result, there is no need for par-

ticipants to worry about injuring an opponent. “You don’t need to hold anything back when you do it,” said Tabacco. “In fencing, we’re really going out there and going through all the motions of trying to kill someone, but with a toy sword. So it is very emotionally involved, and a lot of fun, understanding that this is safe.” The intermediate class wraps up Sept. 7, but a beginner’s class is scheduled to start on Tuesday, Sept. 14. “With the beginner class, I just want to expose them to the sport to see what it is,” said Tabacco. “I am not so concerned that they’re doing everything perfect. Because in the kids class, there’s a lot of just flailing going around with 10-year-olds. In the teen/adult class, there’s still some flailing, just because they’re not used to it. But just so long as they know what they’re doing and why they’re doing it, it’s good.” Tabacco has been pleased with the response from the children who have taken the class: “It’s been really good. The kids like it and the parents like it. I have not had any problems or complaints.” The six-week, 45-minute classes cost $40. The tentative schedule: the beginner class starts at 4 p.m., intermediate at 5 p.m., and teen/adult class at 6 p.m. Classes are held at The White House, 204 Second St. in Oakley. Patriots win opener Correspondent The Heritage girls volleyball team is setting its sights on a fourth consecutive trip to postseason play. To those who saw the first game of the Patriots’ opening match against Rancho Cotate, a Patriot playoff appearance would seem a far-fetched hope. To those who stayed until the end, however, a playoff bid would seem a definite possibility. Final score: Heritage 3, Rancho Cotate 2. The Lady Patriots’ opening game, which they lost they lost 13-25, was an ugly affair. But they scrapped their way back into the match in the second game with a 25-23 win. A back-and-forth third game went to the Cougars, 21-25. Their backs against the wall, the Patriots never trailed and decisively won the fourth game, 25-16, setting up a first-to15 fifth and final game. In the final game, the Cougars jumped out to a 3-1 lead, which Heritage answered with four consecutive points. The two teams played close until Rancho Cotate took an 8-7 lead. From there the Patriots took eight of the final 12 points to win the game 15-10, clinching the match. This year’s team is 15 players deep, the largest team Head Coach Janet Hannigan has fielded. Because of that, she had a hard time predicting how the team would do this season. But she’s confident that her girls will compete in every match. “They’re go-getters, they’re scrappy, and they’re very young,” Hannigan said. “One of

our players, Melissa Shatswell, played the entire time and is only a sophomore. She does a really good job for being such a young player. I’ve got a group of four seniors, eight juniors and three sophomores. So we’ve got a lot of youth but a lot of experience playing. It’s just a different style of playing than we’ve played in the past.” The Patriots lost five players from last season’s playoff team. In identifying players that she hopes to fill the void, Hannigan said, “Definitely our setter, Chelsey Hancock; Edlyn Cotas really stepped up today, she was playing opposite and she played great. We are looking for Courtney Quinn to do some great things outside; Savannah Shelton played solid. “What’s different this year from other years is that we have depth on our bench. Before, when we had people come out, we were in trouble. Now if someone’s not doing something, someone else is willing. Tonight, I didn’t see people take advantage of the opportunity that they were given when they went in, unfortunately; granted, this is only our first preseason match. But I think that they’re on the right track to being good.” Games are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the exception of Saturday tournaments on Sept. 4 and 11. The league schedule opens Oct. 5 against Liberty. Despite an impressive output of effort and energy, the Patriots East Starts team fell short against the Delta Valley Wolfpack. In the first half, Jaden Harvey made a touchdown-saving tackle against the Pack. Trailing 6-0 heading into the third quarter, the East came alive and scored twice. Speedway closed on Labor Day by Jack Menges Correspondent The Antioch Speedway will be dark this Saturday as racers and their fans take Labor Day weekend off in preparation for the final four weeks of auto racing. Promoter John Soares Jr. announced that the dirt modified point chase would conclude with the Sept. 11 program. Rounding out that racing card will be the 360 wingless sprints, super stocks, dwarf cars and mini trucks. Three divisions – dwarf cars, wingless sprints and mini trucks – will wind up Sept. 18. They’ll be joined by the four bangers and an enduro. Going down to the final race of the month, Sept. 25, will be champions decided in the super stocks and pure stocks, plus the 360 sprint cars on that program. Racing will conclude Oct. 9 when Soares Jr. presents one of his open class getaway specials. Dirt modifieds, super stocks and pure stocks will “run what they brung” in the final race of the season.

Cheer clinic Kindergarteners through eighth-graders are invited to attend the annual Future Freedom Falcons Cheer Clinic Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 21 to 23 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the upper gym at Freedom High School. Participants will also perform Friday, Sept. 24 during halftime at the Falcons varsity football game against Merced’s Golden Valley High. USA picks Patriots Heritage High School varsity baseball teammates Ryan Atlas and Paul Blackburn have been selected by USA Baseball to attend the National Team Identification Series – one of the most heavily-scouted events of the fall calendar – Sept. 17-20 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The event has attracted 648 players, who with Atlas, a senior catcher, and Blackburn, a junior pitcher and shortstop, will compete for roster spots on the USA Baseball National Team. Atlas clocked the fastest pop time and one of the top three bat speeds at the event. Blackburn pitched two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five. But again, scholastics is head and head with the sports and what we are trying to do out here.” BOYFL has been in existence for nearly 10 years, said Ooghe, who has headed it the last two and also coaches the junior midget team on which his son plays. The league has one season per year, starting with practice in early August, the Jamboree in late August and an eightweek season starting in September. This year BOYFL plays five games on its home field at Freedom, but the season will launch on the road in Monterey. “Most of the families will travel down the night before, and we’ll stay in hotels and

have group dinners and stuff like that,” said Ooghe. “So its actually been a pretty good thing. It builds great friendships.” It’s too late to sign up for this season, but with a record 350 kids signed up this year and two teams in the youngest age group, it’s apparent that BOYFL will be around next year and for many years to come. “We’re here for the community,” said Ooghe. “The whole reason our association exists is for the kids and the players. We’re building an association that’s going to be very welcoming to the entire community. Kyle and Christina met at Azusa Pacific University. Kyle majored in music with an emphasis and awards in music theory. He graduated from APU in 2008 and earned a teaching credential in 2009. Christina majored in cinema and broadcast arts, minored in dance and graduated from APU in 2009. The couple was married in a beautiful and touching ceremony officiated by Kyle’s beloved mentor, APU Music Director Harold Clousing. A joyful reception followed the ceremony at the Shilo Hilltop Suites in Pomona. Sharing in the celebration was a large wedding party and family and friends from many parts of the United States. Comedy Central alum comes to Cap’s National comedy headliner Mark Pitta will appear at Cap’s Oak Street Bar and Grill in Brentwood on Friday, Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. Pitta springs from the San Francisco comedy scene of the 1980s. “It was the best time to want to be a comedian,” he said. “The clubs created a cooperative nurturing environment almost like a baseball farm system. It got us all ready for Los Angeles when it was time to jump into that scene.” Pitta’s career flourished in LA, highlighted by appearances on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson and later with Jay Leno. Pitta landed a job as host of “Totally Hidden Video” for the FOX network, playing different characters in hidden camera situations. He also hosted “Friday Night Videos” for NBC. Pitta has made guest appearances on “Mad About You” and “Third Rock From the Sun.” For Comedy Central, Pitta has appeared on “Premium Blend,” “The A-List,” Dr. Katz” and “Make Me Laugh.” Pitta wrote and starred in his own sitcom for NBC, but the pilot wasn’t chosen for the fall season. Former NBC Executive Vice

President Warren Littlefield picked a show called “Union Square” instead. It lasted three episodes. Pitta predicts that his show would have lasted at least four. When the word came down that the project wasn’t a go, Pitta magically received a call from the top-rated morning show in the San Francisco Bay Area to be the roving entertainment reporter/host. For five years he brought his unique comic expertise to the man-on-the-street format. One thing that is a huge change this year: the league used to be a triple round-robin and now is a double round-robin.” Instead of a 15-game league schedule in which each team plays each other team three times, this year’s 10-game schedule will require each team to play the others only twice. As a result, league play doesn’t start until October, allowing for a longer preseason in September. “Actually it’s benefited Freedom in that we are able to have more non-league contests,” said Amaro. “Our schedule has been full for years and a lot of people really want to play us. So it’s been nice in that sense. We are going to play Granada this year; Carondelet. We did add a non-league match against Ygnacio Valley, and we haven’t played them in years. It allowed us to play a few other teams that we haven’t played in a while.”

The team’s new No. 1 singles player currently is Nicole Zanarini. “She’s an incredibly hard worker,” said Amaro. “She started playing tennis when she was in sixth grade. I had her out here for tennis camp. She’s a tremendous athlete. Very quick on her feet. She has a pretty strong forehand. She’s learning to develop consistency with her serve. Her athleticism will win her a lot of matches.” Vying for the No. 1 spot are the current No. 2, junior Nadean Hurtado, and No. 3, senior Alexandra Gerundio. “Nadean is always out there giving 100 percent,” said Amaro. “She’s always looking to have fun. She’s always ready to play any time anywhere. Alex – the first essay she every wrote in her English class was how she wanted to be a great tennis player. She had her destiny with greatness because she actually hit balls against (German tennis pro) Tommy Haas one time when she was a ball girl. She’s definitely very passion-

ate about the sport. She likes to play. And when she has a free moment, that’s what she’s doing. Nadean and Alex both played summer tennis this year, which was pretty exciting. So they’ve gotten a lot better and they are excited about this season.” The No. 1 doubles team consists of Mansi Saini, a junior, and Madison Mills, who is the team’s most improved sophomore, according to Amaro. Saini “is ultra-competitive,” he said. “She never lets a ball go past her. She’s always running for everything. Maddy Mills is tenacious with just about everything she does. Whether it’s learning how to serve correctly, whether it’s learning how to volley correctly, she’s very coachable. She’s very quiet but she works just as hard as anybody out here.” Other notable players this season are Amanda Weaver, who is partnered in doubles with Kendall Markham, a firstyear senior “who’s come a long way,” said

Amaro is looking forward to the season. “The goal of Freedom tennis has been the goal of Freedom athletics, which is to give 100 percent and have fun,” he said. “It’s been a great tryout. We had 40 girls who tried out. We were able to get it down to 30. The girls who are here are really excited about being here. They want to represent Freedom well.
