Fire district Holding charging court for aid H by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) will start charging for aid provided at motor vehicle incidents, hazardous material releases, illegal fires and water emergencies. The fees, charged to individuals or their insurance companies and scheduled to take effect as soon as November, will be determined by on-scene time and services rendered. The charges will not exceed the costs of providing service and will range from $448 an hour (per engine) for individuals responsible for starting illegal fires to $6,608 per three hours for complex hazardous material incidents. Fees increase as more services are see Fire page 30

First responders checked on the Cassell family after Scott (far left) and Bryce Cassell, 14, were in a head-on collision Aug. 18. Even though the family was new to East County, they have been uplifted by the community in the form of meal trains, child care and more.

Scott Cassell described the moment a drunk driver changed his life as a lightning strike – the words he muttered to first responders, the debris flying as the jaws of life peeled his van open to remove him and his son from the wreckage – all of it was wiped from his mind since that first impact. His memory returned in the days after the Aug. 18 head-on collision, but what he knows now as he and his 14-year-old son, Bryce, recover from devastating trauma and attempt to relearn basic skills after breaking dozens of bones is that their new community has stepped up to help them in their time of need in unexpected ways. The effort began when Scott’s longtime friend and only contact in the area, Discovery Bay resident Ryan Peterson – along with his wife, Christina Peterson – learned of the accident and took charge of the Cassells’ other three children as Scott’s wife, Rebekah Cassell, stood vigil at the hospital. “I took the kids for a couple of days and then needed to take them down to Stanford for the first weekend after the crash,” said Ryan. “They have two dogs and two cats, and I was worried that the dogs were going to bark all weekend. Brentwood Community Center hosts Banner Up! Brentwood’s second annual Banner Up! event will come indoors with a new exhibit opening Sept. 19, at the Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak St. Residents can get an upclose and personal look at the beautiful, hand-painted banners that have graced Brentwood’s downtown streets and City Park this summer. More than 60 local artists participated in this year’s public art adventure, which is jointly sponsored by the City of Brentwood and the Art Guild of the Delta. The community is invited to an opening reception that same evening, from 6 to 7 p.m., hosted by the City of Brentwood. Many of the banner artists will be on hand to

greet visitors and chat about their work. The exhibit will be on display through the end of September, giving residents and businesses the chance to select their favorites and start planning their bids for the upcoming auction fundraiser. All of the banners will be available for sale by silent auction at the Banner Up! Gala Benefit Auction event, slated for Saturday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Brentwood Community Center. Proceeds from the banner sales will be split 50-50 between the artists and the Brentwood Library Foundation in support of public art in the new library facility. To preview the banners, visit www.artguildofthedelta. org/banner-up-2018.

New wine bar opens in Discovery Bay by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

Discovery Bay residents have a new choice for a glass of wine and some exceptional food, thanks to three friends and one great idea. Glenn Hoffman, Robert Rose and Allen Bellinghausen are the new owners of Vin Alegro, the freshly renovated wine bar in the shopping center off Discovery Bay Boulevard. Though the location has seen some turnover in the past few years, these three have a plan and they plan on staying. “We are bringing the concept of food into a wine bar,” explained Hoffman, who will be playing the role of maître d’. “We have made major modifications to the kitchen area. We have a different philosophy with the wines, and we are not stocking anything that you can get at Safeway. We have also redesigned the interior of the space with respect to furnishings.” Hoffman and his partners are focusing on quality in all aspects, from food and service to wines and craft beers. The bar has nine rotating taps, with a 10th tap dedicated to Coors Light. The addition of cooking equipment allows Vin Alegro to offer a broader menu than its predecessors, and award-winning chef Rose has taken the kitchen and run with it. Defining his cooking style as having no rules, the premise for the menu is Italian with a Spanish flair. “I’m cooking for all palates,” Rose said

Everything is from scratch, and I can pronounce every ingredient I use – that’s my style.” Rose has partnered with First Generation Farmers and the Loose Rooster Ranch, both local, for all his fresh ingredients. He is proud of his farm-to-fork ways, even going so far as to bottle his own honey, branded

through the Byron Inn Café, which he owns. Vin Alegro’s menu will change weekly, based on what is in season and, as Rose puts it, what’s good. “I like to think outside the box,” he explained. “I really want this to be a neighborhood joint where you can come and have your bowl of meatballs and your glass of wine, and then I see you again tomorrow for something

else. I want to keep you excited, and I want to keep you coming here.” The three partners know in addition to a mouth-watering menu, one thing that will keep people coming back is exceptional customer service. “The vision is to bring the best possible customer service that we can,” said Bellinghausen, who has been part of the build-out of Vin Alegro with Hoffman. “We all understand what kind of service we expect when we go someplace, and we want every customer who comes in to get the best possible service. We will keep prices fair and rotate things seasonally.” The wine bar opened during the last week of August with little advertisement beyond some promotion on social media and according to the owners, was full to capacity 15 minutes after opening. Since then, the new hot spot has remained busy, with customers proclaiming their experiences on Facebook and NextDoor. “I think the three of us make a really great team,” Bellinghausen said. “We all have the same expectation of great food and great service. It’s been wonderful so far, and I’m happy to have all of us together doing this.” Vin Alegro is located at 1520 Discovery Bay Blvd., Suite 300, in Discovery Bay. Charity group becomes a nonprofit by Aly Brown Staff Writer

A grassroots movement to make a difference in the lives of homeless East County individuals has turned into a nonprofit organization. Nichole Gardner, owner of Facing Homelessness in Antioch, sought out nonprofit status and obtained the approval with remarkable turnaround earlier this year. The difference now, she said, is the ability to write off both her personal contributions and offer community donors to do the same. “I had put in the information and paid the fees to become a nonprofit, and a couple months ago, I was approved,” she said. “It was surprising how quickly it was approved.” That move to become a nonprofit organization followed a lifestyle she’d centered around improving her community and giving to those considered the least of these – a calling derived from her deep faith. Every Wednesday night, Gardner, her mother, Angela Butcher, and a handful of other close relatives drive down to the Amtrak station in downtown Antioch and unload their van to set up dinner for the homeless. They’ve been doing this for over a year. People from different walks of life gather under flickering yellow lights and convene for food, laughter and community – respite from their everyday living conditions of sleeping on the streets. Gardner has summoned donations and paid for food from her own pocket to offer this service with a lofty goal in sight: obtain nonprofit status and open a shelter and food kitchen of her own. She’s now one step closer after becoming a nonprofit and isn’t losing steam for the bigger things ahead. “I would love to have a facility for the people to go to, with a kitchen where I can cook,” Gardner said, noting her

With the help of her family , Nichole Gardner began feeding homeless people in Antioch once a week. Her group, Facing Homelessness in Antioch, recently obtained nonprofit status. desire to turn one of the downtown buildings into a kitchen to feed the homeless. “I would love to have a ‘shelter’ shelter, but even being able for the people to be able to come in when it’s cold or hot and get a meal would be great.” Food has proven to be only the beginning for those she touches. Some familiar faces who once stood in line for a warm meal now serve behind the table with a new

perspective and opportunities to turn their lives around. Kenny Edwards was one such individual. He was living on the streets and discovered Gardner’s dinners when she first began. His story reflects a history of loss and trauma as different as it is similar in theme to others who have waited for food from Gardner and her family members. Finding community within the gathering, he began helping, and through works of Gardner and affiliated volunteers, he now has an apartment and a car. One particular volunteer, Jamie Garza, was responsible for launching the GoFundMe page that made the car possible. “Could not have done any of this without the community’s gracious support,” Garza said. The news of the organization’s charity work has spread through the grapevine within the homeless community, and while Gardner is happy to serve more people, the downside of more mouths to feed on a fixed budget is a reduction of offerings. “The people in the community – as far as donating clothes and toiletries – they’ve been awesome,” she said. “But as far as the meals, I feel like I’m always coming up short – every week, I spend about $150 to $200 per outreach to feed 55 people, but I’ve recently had to cut it to every other Wednesday. And now not all of the dishes have meat.” While the local church, Lighthouse Ministries, regularly donates food, with the influx of new faces to the dining table, Gardner is putting the call out to the community to donate to the campaign. “If I can get $600 a month, that would help as far as the food goes,” she said. “I’m praying on it. I’m still going to do it, regardless, but I could really use the help.” To volunteer, donate or stay current on Facing Homelessness in Antioch, visit https://www.gofundme. com/facinghomelessness925 or https://bit.ly/2Mo849Z. Students turn garbage truck into art canvas by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Young Brentwood residents Madeline Oien and Michaela Brennan may not pay their families’ garbage bills, but they’ve already left a lasting mark on the city’s trash operations. The two fourth-grade art contest winners have transformed six Brentwood garbage trucks into mobile art exhibits aimed at preventing recycling contamination. “It’s really, really cool,” said Michaela, the second-place winner. “One of my main hobbies is to draw. I love drawing.” Madeline and Michaela’s handdrawn artistic messages will grace the sides of the garbage trucks until the vehicles wear out or the city opts to change the campaign, said Brentwood SolidWaste Manager Jon Carlson, who noted that trucks can last up to 10 years. The winning drawings were two of 18 finalists (from eight schools) in the contest open to all Brentwood Union School District (BUSD) fourth-graders. “It was wonderful to look at so much amazing student artwork,” said BUSD Superintendent Dr. Dana Eaton, a final contest judge with Brentwood City Manager Gus Vina. “Unfortunately, that also made it challenging to select just two. Of the criteria we considered, one important element was how the message would look blown up very large. These two entries

had such great colors and details that the judges really felt they would get this important message out in a positive way.” Madeline’s creation, titled “Miss. Rosie,” depicts a character beside trash and recycling bins and appropriate items that belong in each. Messages urging garbage customers to sort their trash and stop contamination adorn the top and bottom. Her parents did not respond to re-

quests for comment, but Madeline said during a recent city council meeting honoring the winners, “I just thought of (the drawing) and the theme. I really needed to get it out there.” Michaela’s piece, aptly named “Stop Contamination,” is divided into four sections – recycling, noncontamination, garbage and contamination – with disposal examples of each and Earth at the center. Both winners are in Mrs. Lopez’s class at Mary Casey Black Elementary. “I hope it teaches people the more we contaminate, the worse it is for our environment,” Michaela said. “There is already so much pollution and trash in lakes, oceans and rivers.” Carlson said the campaign’s ‘stop contamination’ message needs to reverberate around the community. Items inappropriately discarded in blue recycling cans – furniture, toys, food, tires and a host of other items – must be removed, costing the city time and money. “We hoped that by working with the kids, they can stress that message to their families,” he said. Michaela said it took her about three days just to grasp the contamination concept and strike up an idea with the help of books, but she managed to complete

her masterpiece about a week before the deadline. “There was a lot of erasing and a lot of erasers lost,” she said. “After I did everything in pencil; I did everything over in Sharpie. I only had two chances to redo.” Mayor Bob Taylor has been just one of many observers who gushed at the creations. “If you look at the sides of the garbage trucks, you’ll never look at a garbage truck the same way,” he said. “The artwork is phenomenal from these two young ladies.” Looking ahead, Michaela said the recognition will only fuel her artistic pursuits. She began coloring and doodling at age 3 and has steadily improved over time, in part through watching YouTube tutorials. She has a knack for drawing mermaids, fantasy characters and realistic people and animals. “I’d consider being an artist (when I grow up),” she said. “My dream is to work for a Disney company and draw Disney characters.” For more information on how to avoid recycling-can contamination, visit https://bit.ly/2xaFvqX. Community rallies to reclaim stolen funds On the heels of a theft within the Pioneer Parents’ Club, community members and city leaders have decided to take action and restore what was lost. Brentwood City Councilmember Karen Rarey and her husband Paul decided to launch a GoFundMe account for the parents’ club after an officer for the club, Chrissie Bonavito, allegedly embezzled $28,000 of funds garnered from school-site fundraisers and donations. Bonavito was arrested Sept. 6, and the investigation is still ongoing. In the meantime, the community is working to recover from the loss. “We wanted to show them that the actions of one person shouldn’t define all the hard work put in by the rest of the Pioneer Elementary family,” Rarey said. “That we as a community can and should come together to make a difference during this school community’s time of need.” Rarey’s history of service within the school district goes back to 1995, when she served as the treasurer of Garin Elementary Parents’ Club and later the longtime president of the Liberty Union High School District Educational Foundation.

“I know firsthand the hard work that is put in by both students and parents alike to raise money to enhance and enrich educational programs at schools,” she said. Two days after its creation, the GoFundMe had been shared 154 times, generating $730 of the $28,000 goal. For full transparency, the GoFundMe fundraiser withdrawal permissions have been transferred from Rarey’s hands to Principal McClure and the Pioneer Parents’ Club. “The Pioneer Parents’ Club worked very hard to raise that money,” said Brentwood Union School District Superintendent Dr. Dana Eaton. “It has been heartwarming to see the number of community members in Brentwood who have reached out with offers to help. I very much appreciate Councilmember Rarey’s generous support and fundraising efforts.” To make a donation online, visit https://bit.ly/2NAYOUA. Other donations can be made directly to the school at 2010 Shady Willow Lane, in Brentwood. All checks can be made payable to Pioneer Parents’ Club. To comment, visit www.thepress.net

FALL HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS Summer is almost over. While I won’t miss the 100+ degree days, that also means that it will be raining before you know it! Now is a great time to do some tune-ups to your home to prepare. But please be careful and consider hiring some or all of this work out! Clean your gutters. Many of your reading this article may have bought a new home 5-10 years ago and have never cleaned your gutters because they didn’t really need it because your trees weren’t mature. But those little trees the builder put in may now be dumping leaves in your gutters, which can cause BIG problems when it rains. Check your roof. Not only your gutters, but your roof itself may be filling up with debris, especially in the valleys (where two sloping parts of your roof meet). What many people don’t know is that the vast majority of roof leaks happen with a perfect roof BUT the gutters or valleys are full of debris and leaves and the water backs up and travels sideways and gets under your

roof tiles. After the first heavy rain, your favorite local roofer’s phone rings off the hook. Better to deal with this now BEFORE it’s an emergency! Check your chimney. If you have a wood-burning fireplace, you should have it inspected or at least cleaned after every 50-70 fires. Run the point of your fireplace poker along the inside of the flue, and if you have more than an eighth of an inch of buildup, get it cleaned right away. Seal your home up. Pests will be looking to get out of the cold soon, so seal up holes and cracks. And check your weatherstripping and caulking on all exterior doors and windows to make home more efficient in regards to keeping the warm air in and cold air out. A local couple has taken it upon themselves to solve a universal problem faced by dog owners – that of the short-lived chew toy. Most canine lovers have been there, spending $20, $30 or more on a so-called dog-proof chew toy that will keep pets off the furniture and busy chewing. The toy may last as much as a day or two before it is destroyed and your pet is back to gnawing your shoes. Cherie Falwell, owner of a power-chewing, 140-pound Labrador named Ollie, has come up with a solution that is satisfying dogs the world over. “We set out to design a toy that was safe,” Falwell explained. “We have a dog that chewed shoes and couches and trees, so we bought him all these chew toys, and he would just annihilate them, so we decided to come up with our own.” Falwell and her husband, Curtis, came up with a design and went to work creating their company, Bulletproof Pet Products. They set up shop in their own home, where they began manufacturing their chew toys with domestically sourced materials. Five years later, they and their Indestructibone product are still going strong.

Cherie and Curtis Falwell, seen here with Saydy, are the owners of Bulletproof Pet Products and the creators of the Indestructibone. “Our chew toy is made with rounded edges, so the dog can’t get a good grip, and it’s made to flake off in small pieces over time, not large chunks that can give the dog an obstruction,” Curtis said. “We’ve changed the design a few times, and we patented the shape. This toy will not break your dog’s teeth like antlers can – it’s softer than real bone or antlers.” The Falwells are so confident in their product that they will replace it for free if it’s destroyed in 90 days or less. deductions, and personal exemption phase-out eliminated. • Estate tax exclusion amount increased to $11,200,000. • Adoption credit up to $13,840 for individuals with tax liability. • Earned income tax credit increased for low and moderate-income workers. • Child tax credit increases to $2,000 per child. • Child and dependent care credit remains. • The American Opportunity Tax Credit was extended to end of 2018. The lifetime learning credit remains. • The $2,500 maximum deduction of interest paid on student loans no longer limited to only the first 60 months of repayment. • Elective deferral contribution limits in 401K and 403b etc. increased to $18,500. Next month, I will highlight the changes for businesses. a ‘Bad to the Bone’ hall of fame on their website, where they post pictures of superchewing customers and their mangled Indestructibones. “We have customers say they’ve had their (Indestructibones) last three or four years,” Curtis said. “We have sold over 80,000, and only 130 have been able to chew it down or destroy it in 90 days or less. And even when it’s destroyed, it’s still useable.” Justin Tucker, owner of the 2018 American Humane Hero Service Dog, Roxy, said he loves the Indestructibone, and so does she. “I had noticed that (Roxy) had chewing issues, and she would chew up her toys and destroy them in minutes,” Tucker said. “I was tired of buying these toys all the time. Then, I saw an ad for the Indestructibone, and I was skeptical at first, but we gave it a try, and she’s had it for about a year and a half. These things are tough, and it’s surprising to see something last this long.” The Falwells have the distinction of seeing their product used in police departments all over the world, including Germany, Mexico, Brazil and France. K-9 officers locally use their toys as well in Oakley, San Pablo,

Pinole and Sacramento. As residents of Brentwood for over a decade, the Falwells are committed to giving back to their community. Their chew toys are kennel safe, and the couple likes to donate to local dog shelters. During the fires last year, they sent 2,000 pounds of dog food to an animal shelter in Sacramento. Bulletproof Pet Products can also be seen at pet-related community events like Bark in the Park. As they continue to grow their business, the Falwells hope to expand to a larger shop. For now, Curtis said they are enjoying running their business and working with dogs. “Our favorite thing about owning this business is the dogs,” he said. “We get to talk about dogs and see dogs. I think the most important thing is that we can help people find something for their dog that’s safe. We created these knowing that they were safe and wouldn’t hurt dogs. Five years in business and no broken teeth.” For more information on Bulletproof Pet Products or to purchase an Indestructibone, call 925-262-6128, visit www.bulletproofpetproducts.com or email bulletproofpetproducts@gmail.com. Relax. Rejuvenate. Restore. That Googling thing Leave your everyday worries behind

that reconnects us About a year before my mom passed away, we were sitting in her living room having one of our many chats. One of her favorite things to do was to look at family albums and talk about the various relationships she enjoyed throughout Senior her life. There was orner one picture that she always went back to with an extra bit of fondness and heartfelt recall. It was her favorite cousin, Jesse, holding her while someone snapped a picture of Marla them at the beach. Luckhardt He was a few years older than she was, and you could see the adoration in her face even in that old faded black-and-white photo. Mom was about 4. After a few minutes, she asked me a little timidly if I could use my computer skills to find Jesse. She was so funny and said maybe I could use ‘that Googling thing.’ I smiled and told her I thought it was certainly worth a shot and grabbed my phone. Many years ago, I was a skip tracer for a bank in New York so I felt confident that I could locate anybody with my old sleuthing skills. The internet is an amazing tool that I wish I had in the 1970s at that job, but it took just a few tries and some input from her about where he may be and BINGO! We found a phone number. Although they were very close as children, it had been over 60 years since she talked to her beloved cousin. Time and distance became a factor and they lost touch. I asked her if I should call the number, and she smiled and said, “I guess so.” I have to admit, I was a little nervous and felt somewhat like being a part of those television shows where they find the birth parents of adopted grown children, but I dialed the number and hoped for the best. After a few rings, a man quietly answered, and I said, “Hello, is this Jesse D.?” He replied that it was, and I introduced myself as Mom’s daughter. I remember meeting this man many years ago when I was about 4 or 5 and my recall was that he was smart and funny and very kind. I held my breath for a second and then I could literally feel the

joy over the phone. “My cousin, Norma?” he asked. The frail voice now had a great lift in it, and when he gently asked if she was OK, I said she was and offered to put her on the phone. I will never forget the look on her face when I told her it was him and that he was eager to say hi. Typical Mom, she took the phone and said, “Hi, what’s doing?” I held back tears as the two talked for about 10 or 15 minutes. When she said goodbye and handed me the phone, she said he sounded good. It was the sweetest thing. I am not really sure why the timing was what it was, but a month later we found out that Jesse had passed away. As sad as she was to hear this, she was grateful for the chance to speak to him and tell him she loved him after all those years. Through the internet, a lot of us have reunited with old friends and family on Facebook or other social-media avenues. Mom, who did not have access on her own to these things, relied on Grandpa or me to navigate them, sharing pictures of loved ones far away and watching fun videos of kids with dogs or bathing elephants. She liked it all. For a fee, there are companies that offer DNA tests that can tell you your national heritage and what part English, Baltic or Italian you may be. I was pretty lucky that Mom had a lot of pictures and great stories about my ancestral background, which she shared with me often. Grandparents and greatgrandparents are treasures, and I urge you to spend time with your families to share any history you may have access to. Grandpa has a few photos of his ancestors that he got from his dad with some history of his lineage. As helpful as “that Googling thing” may be, nothing is better than the horse’s mouth or in my case, Mom’s! Marla Luckhardt is a Brentwood resident who works with senior care and advocacy groups. Vincent Pastor Jr.

Higgins Chapel & Oak View Memorial Park Ready to serve our families during a difficult season. We specialize in creating Life Celebrations for those we’ve lost but will love forever.

May 25, 1935 – Aug. 23, 2018 Vincent Pastor Jr. died peacefully on Aug. 23 with love and good thoughts surrounding him. He was born on May 25, 1935, at his family home in Knightsen, California, the ninth of 10 children born to Angela and Vincent Pastor. Vince left school his sophomore year at Liberty Union High School to focus on farming and produce delivery entrepreneurial activities. One of his favorite stories involved walking into the new car dealership at 15 and paying cash for a truck he wasn’t legally old enough to drive. To help support his growing family, he worked nights at Fibreboard in Antioch from the 1950s to 1970s. From humble beginnings and through hard work and perseverance, he bought a ranch with his brother, Robert Pastor, and farmed until his retirement in the late 1990s. He is loved and survived by his wife, Sue; sister, Angela Pastor Wilson; son, Richard Pastor; daughters, Beverly Pastor Josse, Michelle Pastor Hargous and Julie Pastor Vasi; 14 grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by

his loving wife, Janette Jackson Pastor; his daughter, Sandra Pastor; his brothers, Victor, Frank and Robert; his sisters, Mary, Betty, Nellie, Lorraine and Christina; and his parents, Angela and Vincent Pastor. Vince was admired for his ability to buy a tractor low and sell a tractor high, his storytelling, laughter and dance moves. He will always live within our hearts. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial on Sunday, Sept.16, at 10 a.m., at Brentwood Funeral Home, 839 First St., in Brentwood. Join us following the service for a Celebration of Life at the Knightsen Farm Bureau on the corner of Second Street and Delta Road in Knightsen.

Social Talk about town...

Letters

Expressing my gratitude

It is only early September, but the social feeds are full of pumpkin everything. PSL photos are showing up all over Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. What is PSL you ask? It is the acronym for Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte. It appears that sharing a photo with your PSL on a social media feed may be a way of willing the fall season to begin sooner. Krispy Kreme has also jumped on the PSL bandwagon with its own version of a Pumpkin Spice Latte in a hot or a cold option. The chain announced on social media that pumpkin spice donuts are back for the season. Funny thing is the “season” doesn’t officially begin until Sept. 22.

For those who want to brave traffic and crowds, the annual Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival is being promoted as an event not to miss. This year’s Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival is Oct. 13 and 14. If you have never gone to this festival, it is a celebration of the bountiful fall harvest and autumn splendor with special displays of enormous heavyweight champion pumpkins. The entire town is all about pumpkins and entertainment. It is a fun experience, but definitely bring some extra patience, good walking shoes and an appetite for pumpkin-flavored everything.

If you don’t want to travel all the way to Half Moon Bay for a pumpkin patch, Smith Family Farms in Brentwood or Dell’Osso Farms in Lathrop are great alternatives for picking pumpkins. Dell’Osso farms will be open Sept. 29 to Oct. 31. Smith Family Farms has not officially announced the opening date for the pumpkin patch, but keep an eye on its Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ smithfamilyfarms, for that upcoming date.

As a former volunteer fireman with more than 40 years of service, I am aware that ECCFPD needs more community support. We need additional fire stations and staff to keep up with our rapid growth. I am very grateful to all of you for what you did for me during my recent emergency. Albert Bello Knightsen

is invited. In 2014 a group of citizens formed the Brentwood Library Foundation, a volunteer band of civic-minded residents who took on the challenge of advocating for the construction of a new library and for raising funds for its furnishings. This same year the Brentwood city manager and the finance director told members of the foundation that it would be five, then eight, years before Brentwood would be in a financial position to even look into building a new library let alone build one. A city council ad hoc committee was formed but disbanded after three meetings, because the committee and city staff thought it was sending the wrong message to citizens that a library would be built soon. And yet the Brentwood Library Foundation continued to advocate for the new library, pointing out how underserved Brentwood was relative to other cities in the county. The Foundation suggested funding strategies, evaluated alternative sites and generally raised the community’s awareness of the library issue. Lobbying efforts were undertaken, stories were written for the local papers, a steady stream of email messages were distributed and regional journalists took note. Fundraising events were planned and executed. All of these activities were designed to get the city fathers to take the political steps necessary to fund a new Brentwood library and get it built. Congratulations Brentwood Library Foundation for your part in getting the new Brentwood Library built. Bryan Scott Brentwood

Lions feast on Thunder in easy victory by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Rocklin High football team is known as the Thunder. But when the squad visited Liberty last week, it was the Lions that went boom in a 51-9 homecoming victory. Lions quarterback Jay Butterfield completed 16 of 20 passes for 297 yards and five touchdowns; wide receivers Adrik Lamar and Sione Vaki racked up a combined nine catches for 220 yards and three touchdowns; and the Liberty defense held the potent Thunder to a touchdown and a field goal in another dominating performance. The 4-0 Lions never trailed. “The word of the week was ‘finish,’” said Liberty head coach Ryan Partridge. “I challenged them at halftime to ‘finish them’ and they did. They put their foot on the gas pedal and ran the ball well and threw the ball well. The kids played great.” Liberty quieted the Thunder for good with 29 unanswered fourth-quarter points but made key plays all night to control the game. Butterfield found Vaki running down the left sideline for a touchdown, putting the Lions in front 22-6, about a minute after Rocklin cut its deficit to 15-6 on Liam Mays’ 11-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. Later, Liberty’s defense held the Thunder to a field goal, pulling Rocklin to within 22-9, midway through the third following Butterfield’s interception. The Lions held Rocklin to 239 total yards in the game. “We just want to take it one game at a time and win every single one,” said linebacker Nicky Einess, who registered a teamleading 12 tackles and two sacks. John Fio was the team’s second-leading tackler with seven. Brock Hammer, Payton Zdroik and Aiden Rangel also registered sacks. Meanwhile, the Lions’ offense was as fierce as ever, scoring at least 35 points for the fourth consecutive game this season. Butterfield connected with four different receivers (Mason Brady, Thomas Vi, Lamar and Vaki) for touchdowns, and run-

He carried the ball 20 times for 96 yards in Liberty’s victory over McClymonds the week prior. “In the first half, we weren’t running the ball too well, but our wide receivers started catching the ball a lot better, and Jay was just throwing darts out there all night,” said Zdroik. “It was

a really good game.” Rocklin’s Cade Wyant completed 21 of 38 pass attempts for 183 yards and a touchdown, but Rocklin never drew closer than 9 points. Daniel Roberts (six catches for 61 yards) and Mays see Lions page 22

Young Patriots shut out on homecoming by Michael Dixon Correspondent

The Heritage football team gave itself no breaks with its preseason schedule. Last Friday’s homecoming game against Amador Valley was no exception. The visiting Dons jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and defeated the Patriots 35-0. Heritage had chances to get back into the game. On consecutive possessions, the Patriots drove inside of the Amador Valley 5-yard line only to come away empty-handed. The first chance was halted by a turnover on downs. The second opportunity was thwarted when junior quarterback Trevor Moorman was intercepted in the end zone. Coach Don Sanders saw that as a reflection of his team’s biggest issue of the night. “We had some opportunities, and we just didn’t execute,” Sanders said. “Whether it be a blown assignment, a bad throw or a lot of different execution issues, we’ve got to clean it up.” Moorman threw another end zone interception in the second half and the Pats coughed up two fumbles, the first of which set Amador Valley up on the Patriots’ 29-yard

Sanders noted that at times, half of the Patriots on the field were sophomores. The defense remained stout through the second quarter and for much of the second half, even spoiling

solid scoring opportunities. “I’m proud of the boys; I’m proud of the effort and what they did.” Sanders said. “We worked our butt off. We continued to work. This team doesn’t quit.” Running back Hanai Muhammad rushed for a solid 66 yards. Moorman, meanwhile, passed for 116 against an unrelenting Amador Valley defense. The loss moved Heritage to 1-3 on the season. The Patriots have one more preseason game on the road at Cal High before getting into what figures to be a highly difficult Bay Valley Athletic League schedule. While it may not be reflected in the team’s record, Sanders likes the progress that the Patriots have made through a challenging preseason slate. “Without a doubt, we’ve gotten better,” Sanders said. “Now the caliber of opponent we’re playing in this preseason is top notch. We’re playing the top two of the EBAL, and we’re okay with that. We’re going to get better. It may not show up on the scoreboard, at least it didn’t in this one, but we’re getting better as a team. We’re just very young, and we’re learning as we go.” To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress. net/multimedia/slideshows

Loft rather than move C

which enables the ball to slow down in preparation to hook, conserving its momentum until the breakpoint on the lane. After a game or so of play, that laydown area of the lane becomes “drier,” and at the moment of contact with the lane, it engages for just a fraction of a second rather than skidding. In that moment, the axis of the ball rotates slightly, encounters friction, loses energy, initiates early roll and starts the process of hooking early. When the ball arrives at the breakpoint, all of these events have started too early and the result is perceived as the lane breaking downlane when in fact the downlane dynamics haven’t changed but rather the dynamics in the first 2 feet. Not knowing this, the player starts to make the wrong adjustments for what they erroneously think is a problem 40 feet away when it’s right under their nose, literally! They move their feet left, change their equipment or move their midlane target – or worse, their breakpoint target. The solution as a first choice is to loft the ball to a point just beyond this initial laydown area that still has a good amount of oil to restore the skid phase, then all the downlane dynamics are restored without all the wholesale drastic changes mentioned above. Loft is accomplished by releasing the ball just a fraction of a second later than usual, which allows the swing to travel just a couple more degrees in its arch. Think of your old release point as now

having to jump over a short fence or wall. This is best practiced by placing a multifolded towel on the lane about 3 or 4 inches out and delivering the ball over it. Have another bowler watch the distance past the line you normally lay down and place your towel there at first to create a loft of about 4 inches to start. If you land on the towel, no worry – it won’t go far. Never step onto the lane to retrieve the towel. You’re likely to slip and fall. Step into the gutter if it’s close and pick it up from there. If it’s farther out than that, call the desk for the help of a porter to get it. Practicing the loft will be a valuable tool in your box of skills for a higher scoring game.

THE

Last time, I dispelled the myth (in practice) that a heavier ball hits harder than a lighter ball; today I’d like to dispel another myth that making a move left is required when the shot you started with starts to result in high-hits or too much hook downlane. In order for a ball Kegler’s to hook, it must do orner things in a prescribed sequence. It must skid for a degree of the lane to conserve energy later downlane by avoiding friction due to the copious amounts of oil delivered to the heads or the first 15 feet of Duane the lane. Wilson That oil is there not so much as a component of the specifically designed pattern in play but to protect the laydown area from the initial impact of the player’s ball with the lane surface. If you’re playing a typical house shot, you’re playing the second arrow and dropping your ball onto an area common with most of the other players. Most players put their ball onto the lane about 2 to 6 inches just past the foul line and in an area about 4 inches wide, an area about the size of a coffee saucer. In short order, that area becomes depleted of the majority of its oil. Earlier I alluded to the sequence of things necessary for a ball to hook – the first being skid. As the ball travels downlane, it encounters greater amounts of friction,

LIVING TRUSTS: WHAT THEY CAN AND CAN’T DO

Most adults have heard of living trusts. Maybe from our parents or family members, perhaps from friends or colleagues. Many people know they need a trust before they even fully understand what a trust is and what it can and can’t accomplish. Today I want to explain some basic trust principles. The main reason most Californians should establish a trust is to avoid probate. Probate is a court proceeding where your executor settles your estate and distributes your assets under a judge’s supervision. Probate is a public proceeding and it is slow and expensive. By placing your assets in a trust, you can avoid probate entirely. This applies when you pass away and also if you were to become incapacitated. Incapacity planning is critical because without it your spouse or family would need to go to court for legal authority if you become incapacitated. A living trust is also a great tool to

control the distribution of your estate. Your trust can set specific ages when your beneficiaries receive their inheritance. This is important for young families. It can protect beneficiaries who are irresponsible with finances or struggling with creditors. A properly structured trust can protect individuals with special needs that might otherwise lose government benefits if they were to receive an inheritance. In short, a trust is a virtual “nobrainer” for adults in California that own real estate. A living trust does not protect your assets from creditors. Under the eyes of the law, the assets of a living trust are still owned by the creator of the trust If you have questions about estate planning or would like to setup an appointment, call me at (925) 420-4111 or visit my website at www.edwardyoungerlaw.com . The Antioch High School boys’ and girls’ water polo teams recently defeated Pittsburg in Antioch’s first win this year. The girls won 27-3, while the boys won 17-11.

Antioch water polo squads sink Pittsburg The Antioch High School water polo program is back on solid ground. On Sept. 5, behind new head coach Zayd Othman, the boys’ and girls’ squads picked up the program’s first win this year, with the girls’ team demolishing Pittsburg 27-3 and the boys’ drowning the Pirates 17-11. “The girls’ game went a lot smoother than the (boys’),” said Othman. “The women played through four quarters without subs, while the men pushed through a hard-fought game. We came out on top in the end.” Johanna Evans (14 goals), Caroline Preece (8), Delaney DeMarco (2), Marissa Gearhart (2) and Brandie Romero (1) all scored in the contest for the Panther girls, while Owen Henkle (8 goals) and Colby Finch (7 goals) combined to score 15 of the boys’ 17 goals. Owen Preece and Adian White each checked

in with a score to round out the boys’ scoring. Othman, who in his younger years was coached and trained by a host of Cal water polo players – Mason Cox, Marin Balarin, Ivan Rockov, Iosefa Tuiasau and Preston Rodman – is thrilled to have enough varsity players to field the girls’ and boys’ teams at Antioch this season. He’s encouraged by the program’s progress thus far. “It’s not going to be an easy season, but my athletes are learning how to play the game, and they are excited,” he said. Gearhart believes the team is making strides to improve. “Whatever Coach Zayd says to do, I just do it,” she said. “I am actually learning how to play the game of water polo.” The Antioch boys’ and girls’ squads are slated to return to the pool Sept. 17 at Liberty.

risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.servicelinkASAP.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 00000007463532. provided or as supplemental crews, equipment or air ambulance are required. The fire board approved the fee plan in an 8-1 vote this week with board member Joe Young dissenting. No residents spoke on the topic during the public comment period. “When we didn’t pass measures before, the community really challenged the district for not exploring and going after every other way to find alternative revenue in lieu of asking for property taxes,” said Fire Chief Brian Helmick. “This is one other mechanism that we are trying to look at.” Helmick said the district will waive the fees in certain situations, but specifics must still be determined. outside, and I said, ‘Hey I’d like to give you permission to go into the backyard to either let the dogs out or my cell phone number so you can call me to come take care of them.’ But once I told her the story of what had happened, she was like A) I’ll take care of it, don’t worry about it, but B) what can I do to help?” From there, things took off. “I got back from that weekend, and she had left a note in the kitchen – she and the other neighbors had gone through, cleaned out all of the food that had gone bad and restocked everything,” Ryan said. “She’d set up a meal train with two months worth of food – all in a matter of the weekend – and there was about $100 or something in five dollar bills for the kids to grab if they needed money. At least 100 people have come out to help in some way.” From installing storage racks and completing the office in the garage to constructing the wheelchair ramp needed in order for Scott and Bryce to be discharged from the hospital, strangers from Discovery Bay and Brentwood alike have contributed time, money, labor and even organized a benefit in their name. “Monique Guerra, the owner of Crown and Crowe – put together a post and people were dropping off supplies, pet food and Monique donated overhead storage racks (to create the room for) wheelchair access,” Ryan said. ed a similar fee system for providing medical aid in February 2016. That fee program drops charges for those who demonstrate financial hardship or have died. Both fees are permissible under the Fire Protection District Law of 1987, which allows districts to charge for services they are empowered to perform if they have inadequate revenue to render services. However, the agency can only charge the amount it spends to complete the service. The fire district, which covers 249 square miles and over 114,000 residents, has diminished from eight stations in 2008 to three today, and district residents have shot down a revenue-generating parcel tax, benefit assessment and utility-user tax since 2012.

Fire Board President Brian Oftedal said at the outset of exploration of the fee program that it represents another way to generate district revenue. “The chief has talked about turning over every rock (to find additional funds),” he said. “I think that is what the community has been asking for over and over.” Helmick estimates about 10 to 15 percent of the district’s over 7,500 yearly calls will fall into the new fee category, bringing the agency about $50,000 a year. The national company, Fire Recovery USA, will handle fee collection in return for a small percentage of funds collected, Helmick said. The company serves 971 departments in 42 states.

Fire board member Joe Young did not divulge his reason for opposing the fee program but has said in the past he felt uneasy about the charges. “The public is already paying for the fire district, so what we are doing is cutting out a piece of that and saying we are going to charge specific users, even though as a whole the public has paid for that service,” he said during a discussion about fees earlier this year. Examples of other fees include $487 per hour for a routine car accident and $784 an hour for a basic hazardous material response. To view the complete fee plan, visit https://bit.ly/2NCqOal. daca, was also one of the first on scene to help on the night of Aug. 18 and has since stayed connected. Apodaca was on his way home from work in San Francisco and stumbled upon the accident before any first responders had arrived. He pulled over and bounced from the son to the father, reminding them that help was on its way in between directing traffic around the wreckage. With a sister who was paralyzed from a crash years before, seeing the carnage of the crumpled vehicles hit home. Apodaca was able to connect with Ryan through Facebook and has helped complete projects around the Cassell home. He added that, in asking for advice on how to properly install carpet, Gabe Acompora, owner of Nor Cal Flooring, said he would volunteer to help as well. “(Acompora) said, ‘Just give me the address and I’ll take care of it.’ My heart just really goes out to victims of accidents,” said Apodaca, a soon-to-be father of six who puts in 75 hours a week of work in San Francisco. “I wish I could do more – I can’t imagine if something happened to me, it would just devastate my family, so doing a little work in a garage is nothing for me to do for them.” Going back to the night of the crash, Scott and Bryce were headed home from running errands to hardware stores in preparation for weekend projects. The Cassell family was trying to tackle the lengthy todo list that comes with a move. The father and son had just grabbed

food from Taco Bell near Auto Center Way and were pulling onto the freeway entrance when a drunk driver in an F-150 truck, driving at freeway speed in the wrong direction with his lights off, hit their minivan head-on. While Scott’s memory of the actual incident was lost due to the three strokes he suffered, Bryce recalled the moment of realizing both of his femurs were broken while stuck inside the crushed metal with grisly detail. Meanwhile at home and wondering where they were, Rebekah discovered what had happened by looking for the location of her family members’ iPhones via iFind. That pointed her to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek and UCSF Children’s Hospital in Oakland. She rushed to Children’s and was told if she wasn’t present at the hospital, doctors would have to make decisions without her consent, at which point she moved in and left the care of their children (ages 9, 12 and 17) to the Petersons. Bryce has since moved into a hospital room in the rehab center of John Muir one door down from his father. The two make light of their situation by FaceTiming each other to see who received the better breakfast or taunting one another to see who can recover more quickly. On Friday, Sept. 7, Scott was able to bear weight on one leg for the first time and Bryce was able to use crutches, but all joking aside, his father said watching him recover is bittersweet. “The biggest loss that I have is every

day that I watch him go through rehab and struggle to get better – it crushes, it crushes me,” Scott said, tearing up as he spoke. “It’s a conflict between being proud to see what he’s able to do and watching him suffer to get better. Every day I cry – and I don’t cry easily – because I watch him go through this. He’s 14 years old. And I have to remind myself he could have died, so this is fantastic, but it’s still a struggle. I’m stuck in this conflict of feeling horrible – feeling like I should be able to protect him from going through this.” From firefighters and other first responders to community members, Scott said he planned to spend the next year after recovery thanking those who helped the Cassells in their time of need. And Rebekah’s strength as she walks alongside her husband and son through recovery is emboldened by their positive attitudes and knowing that their new home has welcomed them above and beyond the call of ordinary neighbors. “There’s humor and there’s strength, and that humor has gotten (Scott and Bryce) through the worst of it,” said Rebekah. “Friends and family and neighbors – people we don’t even know – wanting to help is amazing.” A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Cassells with medical expenses.
