The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) has purchased two new pieces of land near Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve and Vasco Hills Regional Preserve – the second such acquisition in as many months.

In October, the district purchased a total of 76 acres near Deer Valley Regional Park, between Brentwood and Antioch.

This most recent purchase includes land parcels, totaling 390 acres and encompassing a 191-acre property on an unincorporated portion of Somersville Road, south of Antioch, at Black Diamond’s north entrance and 199 acres southwest of Byron, east of Vasco Hills Regional Preserve and north of Byron Vernal Pools Regional Preserve. The district will purchase the combined lands for 1.8 million.

National recording artist comes home to her roots

by Amy Schrader Correspondent The traditional tree-lighting ceremony at The Streets of Brentwood on Saturday, Nov. 26, will feature more than just Santa and holiday cheer.

This year’s festive event will also highlight the music of a national headliner with roots in East County.

Carina Sherborne, 19, known as Carina on national pop charts, will present a special holiday performance, including the debut of her new single. The Seattlebased recording artist considers East County home, where she attended Sutter and Belshaw Elementary schools in Antioch. Her father is a Brentwood resident and her grandparents attended high school in Antioch.

“We are all excited and can’t wait to watch her perform,” said Carina’s uncle, Discovery Bay resident Justin Torchia. “She’s a true musician and songwriter, and she has come such a long way.”

Carina was a young girl when her mother remarried a military careerist and as the stepdaughter of a military officer, Carina and her mother traveled the country – resulting in her attending 16 schools during the course of her education. Throughout it all, she held on to her love of music.

Regardless of where she lived, Carina and her mother shared a passion for music and worked to train Carina on musicianship, from singing to learning to play the guitar and piano.

“Through my struggle to settle in each state and fit in and find friends, I held on tightly to my dreams

of being a famous musician,” she said.

She and her mother eventually settled in Seattle, Washington, where she continued her musical training and began writing her own music. Her career had another boost when she made it through four rounds of American Idol, but things took a turn for the worse when her mother became seriously ill, requiring a lifesaving surgery. During this time, she dropped out of school and attended classes online while she took care of her recovering mom and her brother.

Later, Carina pushed aside college acceptance letters, instead determined to follow her musical dreams.

Her hardwork paid off, and this year she released five songs, including “Blue.” The music video went viral, accumulating more than 200,000 views in its first week.

Within the first week of sales, she climbed up the national pop charts, topping out at number 54, above Meghan Trainer and Prince.

“Finally releasing my music was an incredible feeling,” said Carina.

Today, her music is played on more than 50 radio stations nationwide, 15 worldwide and is available on streaming sites and Pandora. She holds the third spot on the Seattle Pop Charts and is ranked 83rd nationally. Carina is working on a new hit single and is looking forward to her Brentwood concert and the opportunity to visit with family and friends.

“It’s been a long and winding road that has lead me back full circle to my home in East County,” said Carina.

by Aly Brown Staff Writer Children all over the Brentwood Union Elementary District spent last week gearing up for the Thanksgiving break with festive classroom decorations, turkey hats, feasts and, of course, the famous “No Turkey For Perky” play put on by kindergarteners, but they also spent it attempting to understand what it means to live with a disability.

Ability Awareness Week ran from Nov. 14 to 18, organized by the Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) with the intention of creating awareness and acceptance of people who are different. Participating schools put on assemblies, held interactive lessons in class, read age-appropriate stories with special-needs protagonists and featured activities designed to show students how living with a disability may feel.

Pioneer Elementary School was one of the participating schools. One event offered students the opportunity to attempt everyday activities through the lens of a special-needs individual. Five stations were set up in a fair-style event and the children were asked to attempt the activities while either using gloves or with one hand held behind their back.

Heather Christiansen, a council member, explained that all of the stations reflected some form of daily challenge for people who, due to a disability, lack fine

The older grade levels were asked to attempt the tasks using fewer fingers than the younger children, to really give the kids a sense of that level of frustration – what it must feel like when someone asks you to hurry for the bus or says you’re moving too slowly when you’re doing the best you can.

“It opens the door for conversation,” said Christiansen, who shared that the art docents had also designed special projects,

such as blindfolded drawing and crafts to be created while wearing gloves.

Pioneer Principal Samy D’Amico came out to watch the students at the stations and shared some insight about what the activities, assemblies and demonstrations meant to his school.

“The goal is to continue this awareness throughout the entire year,” D’Amico said. see Awareness page 6

“I equate the Awareness Week to Red Ribbon Week – it’s not something you just do for a week and then forget about it for the rest of the year. It needs to be ongoing.”

One Pioneer parent, Tiffany McClure, asked her daughter what it was like going through the activities and was touched by her response.

“She said, ‘Mom, you know that tight feeling in your chest when you’re upset that you can’t do something? That’s how I felt.

Is that how Cameron feels everyday?’” said McClure, noting that her daughter’s friend Cameron lives with a disability.

That kind of awareness is exactly what the parents of SEPAC are hoping to achieve – provoking thought and compassion, while making sure students understand that special-needs children still want to be treated as friends on the playground, not pitied.

Loma Vista was another elementary school to share in the spirit of inclusion. As part of this school’s awareness week, local resident and substitute teacher Jessica Ortiz came in as a guest speaker to share with the children her life of living with cerebral palsy.

Ortiz, who was impacted at birth when the umbilical wrapped around her neck and cut off her oxygen supply, has been in a wheelchair her entire life.

“I know some of you have seen me around school and asked, ‘Ms. Ortiz, did you break your leg?’” Ortiz said. “But I wish I had, because a broken leg will heal.”

Ortiz’s overall message was that dis-

ability didn’t define her and that it shouldn’t define anyone. Instead of hiding away in her home, as many may have expected of her, she is an active substitute teacher who looks forward to work each day. She can be found subbing for fourth and fifth graders and teaching Spanish to high school students.

Loma Vista Principal Chris Calabrese, who was once Ortiz’s teacher, expressed his amazement at her resilience and complete joy at having her work at his school.

“We’ll always have an opening for Jess,” he said.

Krey Elementary School participated in the week as well, with assemblies, presentations of books that represent Down syndrome or autism, guest students who shared their experience and morning announcements to share the purpose of the week.

“Every single child has something worth finding out about,” said Krey Principal Brian Jones.

Krey students will also stamp their handprints in a rainbow of colors on the playground wall ball on Dec. 2, as a celebratory show of diversity of abilities, cultures and creeds.

While the other elementary schools in the district were not holding their awareness weeks at the same time, they each have it slated for later on in the school year.

“We had an assembly in which we introduced our ability awareness theme last (April), which was ‘the more we get together, the happier we’ll be,’” Mary Casey Black Principal Liz Ybarra said.

The gift of giving Brentwood’s Kids Corner Preschool students got a lesson in compassion and giving when they collected 200 items for the Food Bank of Contra Costa County and Solano. The preschoolers learned the importance of helping others as they shopped for their items and filled the donation bin.

END OF THE YEAR TIPS Now that the end of the year is approaching, I get some of the same questions every year. I’ll cover two of the most common in this article. 1. Should we take our home off the market over the holidays? 2. How can we maximize our tax deductions this year?

In regards to taking your home off the market over the holidays, I want to address the myth that home selling activity completely shuts down right before Thanksgiving and picks up again in January. The truth is that homes sell all year around. There may be fewer buyers, but they are motivated, and you’ll have fewer other homes to compete with.

If you aren’t that motivated to sell, you don’t have a deadline to meet or showing your home during the holidays is too much of a hassle, go ahead and take your home off the market. However, if you do have to sell your home and you do have a deadline to meet, then leave it on the market. It certainly isn’t going to sell if you take it off the market!

In regards to maximizing your tax deductions, you can consider paying your full tax bill in December, not just the first installment. (This would only work if you pay your taxes yourself instead of through an impound account with your lender.) You can also consider paying your January mortgage payment before the end of the year.

Doing either or both of the above suggestions will simply move deductions from next year into this year. This means you’d then have LESS deductions next year. You’ll want to check with your tax professional first to see if it is more beneficial to increase your deductions this year versus next.

Human foods pets should avoid The revenue of the pet-care industry is testament to the lengths people will go to ensure their pets are comfortable and receiving a high level of care.

Well-meaning pet owner often pamper their pets, and many believe giving treats of human food is the ultimate indulgence for their animals. However, these individuals may be unwittingly exposing their beloved pets to health problems by feeding them the wrong foods.

The Humane Society of the U.S. warns that foods considered good for people can be very dangerous for pets. This may even include common fruits and vegetables.

In 2010, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center received more than 167,000 calls related to pet exposure to toxic substances. The top three reasons for pet poisoning included consumption of prescription and over-the-counter drugs (45,616 calls); ingestion of insecticides (29,020 calls); and eating human food (17,453 calls). Many people are unaware that certain foods present a hazard to their pets’ health.

Although any food not specifically designed for cats and dogs can affect the digestive system, resulting in vomiting, diarrhea or intestinal distress, the following foods are particularly problematic for companion animals.

Alcohol Alcoholic beverages can cause liver and

brain damage, because it has the same effects on pets as it does on people; it just takes far less alcohol to negatively affect pets than it does humans. Just a little alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, central nervous system depression, problems with coordination, difficulty breathing, coma and even death.

Chocolate The toxic component of chocolate is theobromine. It’s present in all types of chocolate, but more so in dark varieties and baking chocolate. At its worst, chocolate can cause an abnormal heart rhythm, seizures and death.

Dairy products Cats pictured lapping up bowls of milk is a misrepresentation of what they should be consuming. Many cats, and even some dogs, are lactose intolerant. Eating dairy products can cause digestive upset and may lead to food allergies and discomfort.

Fat trimmings, raw meat, raw eggs and raw fish Each of these can cause vomiting, diarrhea or a painful condition called pancreatitis from excessive fat. Plus, there is a risk of salmonella or E. coli associated with these foods.

Grapes and raisins Cats may shy away from them, but dogs can suffer acute kidney failure from these fruits.

Now the roles are somewhat reversed, and it’s my honor and pleasure to make sure that my mom is also safe, happy and well taken care of. This includes seeing to it that her physical, mental and financial independence remain intact.

they are concerned about money, but when there is added pressure from so-called loved ones, this may be considered abuse.

Many seniors have family members or other caregivers manage their money and pay their bills. This could be due to any number of reasons, such as poor eyesight, an unsteady hand to write checks or an inability to make sense of complicated billing procedures. Medical bills can be especially hard to decipher, and often there are mistakes made by either the insurance company or the medical facility itself.

Either way, a lot of older folks rely on others to make sure their bills are handled in a timely manner and that all of their money is used wisely so it lasts for the rest of their lives.

Taking on the responsibility of somebody else’s finances is not as difficult as you may think. It takes a little time and patience, but helping to keep a senior loved one’s monetary responsibilities in order just takes planning. It isn’t often I hear grumbling, but unfortunately, there have been a few instances in which someone who is very concerned about how their money is being spent has approached me.

It’s difficult and very sad to say, but on several occasions, I’ve suspected what is referred to as financial elder

abuse.

Physical, mental and financial abuse is against the law – pure and simple. If you feel that you or someone you know are a victim of any of these, get help. There are attorneys who specialize in cases like this, but there is also help through numerous agencies that can be found online. One site is AARP.org, which offers basic information. In Contra Costa County, you can also find answers for elder and dependent abuse at its official website – https://goo.gl/mtuQXv. Most importantly, there is a 24hour hotline, at 1-877-839 4347, for adult protective services, which can help immediately. I called to confirm the number and to make sure they will guide you through whatever process you need to resolve your problem.

There is no reason to be a victim, and confidential help is just a phone call away. Keeping seniors safe is crucial, and there are steps you can take to protect yourself or someone you feel is not being treated with the dignity, respect and love they have so rightfully earned.

WalkAbout and Holiday Parade a winter wonderland despite weather It rained on everyone’s parade during last weekend’s annual Holiday Parade and Winter WalkAbout, but no spirits were dampened as local residents donned umbrellas and made their way through a soggy downtown to celebrate the start of the holiday season.

The rain-or-shine event was Brentwood’s 34th parade and fourth year for the Winter WalkAbout, highlighting local businesses that opened their doors to families and residents with treats and games for the little ones, including photos with Santa and story time with Mrs. Claus. At The Press building, there were even sightings of snowflakes falling from the roof amid the raindrops. Grown-ups had the opportunity to participate in the Taste of Downtown Brentwood Restaurant Tour, which featured samplings from 10 local restaurants and pubs.

“It was a great event despite the weather, and it was nice to see so many families turn out to enjoy the afternoon,” said Greg Robinson, Downtown Brentwood Coalition member and event co-chairman.

Following the WalkAbout, residents lined up along the streets of downtown for the Holiday Parade, hosted by the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce.

Freedom Falcons advance to NCS Open Division

by Michael Dixon Correspondent For Freedom to advance to the inaugural NCS Open Division final against De La Salle, the team first had to beat league rival Pittsburg for a second time on the season, and they did just that.

Freedom jumped the Pirates early, taking a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.

While Pittsburg’s offense did eventually get going, it struggled defensively against the Falcons and couldn’t stop senior running back Ronnie Rivers. Rivers scored six of his team’s eight touchdowns as Freedom defeated the Pirates 55-35.

The Falcons will now head to Dublin High School on Dec. 2, for a date with the Spartans in the NCS Open Division championship.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” Rivers said. “We’ve played this team so many times over the last few years. It’s nice to finally come out with the ‘W.’” Rivers and the Falcons controlled much of the early action, jumping out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and going up 27-7 early in the second. But Pittsburg got back into the game on a 57-yard pass from senior quarterback Seu Kuka to junior receiver A’jae Boyd and a 16-yard score from senior back Montaz Thompson.

This cut the deficit to 27-20 late in the first half.

However, following an interception from junior safety Jaelyn Thomas, Freedom went on an 88-yard scoring

drive. In the final minute of the half, Rivers capped the drive off with a 3-yard touchdown, his fourth of the night. That gave the Falcons a 34-20 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

“Any time you jump out like that, you kind of take the wind out of somebody’s sails,” Freedom head coach Kevin Hartwig said. “We got up and, unfortunately, we kind of sputtered. They started rolling.

But, we got a big play at the end of the half. That was kind of key for us.”

Rivers – recently crowned league MVP – wasted no time showing why.

He got the Falcons off to a hot start, rushing for a 67-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. He finished the game with 299 yards rushing. Five of his touchdowns came on the ground, with another coming when he connected with senior quarterback Jonathan Pierce on a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Pierce threw three touchdowns of his own. His first was critical in the game. Following Rivers’ first touchdown, Pittsburg’s initial possession resulted in a three-and-out. A bad snap on the punt gave the Falcons the ball on the 12. The Pirates defense shut Freedom down on the first three plays. But, on fourth down, Pierce found senior running back Kyle Harmon on a screen. Harmon went into the end zone untouched, opening a 13-0 lead.

Offensively, the Falcons have been dominant all year. They have scored 41 or more points in all 11 games. Even still, the

55-point output was tied for Freedom’s second-best night of the season – only topped by 65 points against Antioch.

“We really came out and played today,” Rivers said. “They were a great team with great coaches. But, we came out on top in this one.”

Pittsburg’s season ends at 9-2, with both losses coming at the hands of Freedom.

The Falcons now sit at 11-0 and continue to add to what’s already been the greatest season in school history.

Patriots fall to Monte Vista on gridiron

by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer Heritage High School’s magical run through the North Coast Section playoffs was brought to a sudden stop last week, in a 56-28 loss to top-seed Monte Vista.

“The kids played hard,” said Heritage head coach Don Sanders. “A couple of mental mistakes against a quality team, and it burned us. I couldn’t be prouder of this team and the effort that they gave.”

Monte Vista (11-1) will now clash with second-seed Antioch for the North Coast Section Division I title on Dec. 3, at Dublin High School.

Heritage’s loss came about a week

after the fourth-seed Patriots (8-4) won their first Division 1 playoff game, overcoming a 32-0 deficit to fifth-seed San Leandro.

For much of the first half against Monte Vista, it appeared the Patriots’ momentum might carry them to another victory, but the Mustangs had running back Shane Perry on their side and the Patriots committed two costly turnovers to turn the tide.

Perry finished with 22 carries for 240 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the first half.

With the game knotted at 14, Perry cashed in on a interception from Nick Zell and a Patriots fumble, on successive drives, giving Monte Vista a 28-14 lead midway through the second quarter.

Erik Krommenhoek’s 15-yard touchdown catch minutes later extended the Mustangs’ lead to 35-14 at halftime.

“The first quarter or quarter and a half, we were right there with them,” Sanders said. “You can’t spot a team 14 points; not this team.”

Monte Vista quarterback Jake Haener closed the door on a Patriots’ second-half comeback with a 15-yard touchdown run to open the second half, increasing the Mustangs’ lead to 42-14.

The University of Washingtonbound Haener connected on 15 of 23 passes for 252 yards, along with six carries for 23 yards.

Zell completed 24 of 38 passes for 300 yards, while Tyrese hauled in seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Tyriq finished with six catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Both Mack brothers scored in the second half, but it was too little, too late for Heritage.

After the contest, Sanders said he was proud of his squad. Heritage started the season 6-0 for the first time in school history, before finishing 8-4 and 2-3 in the Bay Valley Athletic League.

“We set a lot of records, and the team was obviously very talented,” Sanders said. “We played with a lot of heart and a lot of desire in the playoffs, and I couldn’t ask for more.”
