Corn Country cheers state champs by Kyle Szymanski

December 28, 2018

Principals Honored

Staff Writer

Liberty High School head football coach Ryan Partridge likes to say that Corn Country travels well. The community lived up to that description last week, packing City Park to honor the first-ever state-championship-winning Liberty High School football team. The faint sounds of a few side conversations grew to a crowd-wide roar as the Lions’ players came into view, with the school’s band and cheerleaders following behind. “Corn Country, it feels good to be a state champion,” said Partridge early on in the nearly half-hour celebration. One by one, Liberty’s 64 players streamed across the stage, each pausing to soak in a moment of their historic achievement. But it was what the players did as a team that will go down in city lore. The 2018 Lions defeated Sierra Canyon 19-17 on Dec. 15 to

Veterans store offers more than retail by Aly Brown Staff Writer

A store in Antioch celebrated its grand opening in the weeks before Christmas, but it was also set to become the stage for a public discussion on aiding homeless veterans in Contra Costa County. City officials, decorated veterans such as Dr. Doris I “Lucki” Allen, and those who launched New To You Vets Resale Store Inc. from idea to reality gathered on Dec. 12 to cut the ribbon. Dr. Louis Langston, a 79-year-old Vietnam veteran with a doctorate in humanities and the man behind New To You’s creation, presented Antioch Mayor Sean Wright with an initiative: the store’s mission statement centered around providing services and permanent housing for

Langston noted the city had a program in place intended to provide relief for veterans in emergencies but said his initiative digs deeper into the many issues facing those who serve – one largely being homelessness. “We’re happy with the concept of what the mayor has, but we’re wanting to initiate permanent housing,” Langston explained, noting he hopes to discuss ways to weave local efforts together for the cause on a

larger scale. As of press time, Langston said Wright had committed to attending a public discussion at New To You this month to expand on the current programs and further ways to help veterans. Prior to the store’s opening, Langston initially sought a location to gather with fellow veterans who needed community, along with the therapy of discussing their experiences.

“The concept of this store evolved because initially I had designed to have a space for veterans to come and have a space to share their stories,” said Langston. “Believe it or not a lot of our families don’t even know about our experiences because we don’t want to burden them with that … coming back from Vietnam, it was a very sad day for us (vets); a lot of the time, people didn’t want to discuss it, and many years ago, people didn’t even want to listen (to our stories). We had to slip in and slide, and now veterans need a place to come in and share our experiences to help relieve some of our anxieties.” Knowing he would need to obtain funding to keep such a gathering center open, Langston pursued the see Veterans page 26

Agency: Liberty High School Heather Harper is halfway through her second year as principal at Liberty High School and wholeheartedly in love with the school itself. As a veteran administrator for the Liberty Union High School district, Harper jumped at the chance to lead the deeply rooted school in the heart of Brentwood. “I love this place,” Harper said. “The history at Liberty is so unique. It’s not something that you find in all schools, and the community here truly supports this school – it’s unbelievable.” Harper didn’t always plan on going into education. After graduating from the Air Force Academy, she became a medevac-flight pilot and loved every minute of her time in the air. It wasn’t until later that she discovered she had a passion for working with children. She earned her master’s degree in education while

We wanted a small-town feel, and it’s been a great place to bring our kids up.” Harper now lives five minutes from her office on campus, and her oldest son is part of the student body. She likes working with high

schoolers because of all the activities and extracurricular programs that go along with the job. Supporting students in their educational and athletic endeavors as they prepare for their adult lives is her favorite part of the job. “I’m truly so grateful to get to serve the community that I live in,” Harper said. “I have lived my life in a server-oriented capacity one way or another, through the Air Force and through education. I love being immersed in the community and getting to see the impact. It’s very special.”

Brentwood school officials recognized Two site administrators from the Brentwood Union School District have been selected for honors by the Association of California School Administrators. Brentwood Elementary School Principal Guy Rohlfs has been selected as the Elementary Principal of the Year, and Adams Middle School Assistant Principal Lauren Griggs has been selected as Secondary Co-Administrator of the Year for the ACSA Delta Charter. Both will be honored at a dinner on March 14, at Lone Tree Event Center. Guy Rohlfs has been an elementary principal since 2006. He started in the Antioch Unified School District as a classroom teacher, vice principal and principal. In 2009, he was hired to be the principal of Brentwood Elementary, a post he has held for nearly a decade. Rohlfs is well-respected by the staff, students and families of Brentwood Elementary School. According to his nomination form: “His calm demeanor and genuineness to attend to whatever is facing him are one of his greatest qualities. He is always visible, approachable and friendly. It’s difficult to walk around his school site next to him without the constant interruptions from parents, students and staff members wanting to say hello, share a significant accomplishment or humorous tale.” “Guy Rohlfs has worked together with

I feel very fortunate to work with him.” Lauren Griggs has been an assistant principal at Adams Middle School since 2016. Prior to that, she was an instructional coach, language arts teacher and student in the Brentwood Union School District. Call the police and make a report. Even if it is clear that the accident was not your fault you should always call the police and make a report of the accident. Some police departments will refuse to come to the scene of the accident unless someone is injured but a record of your call will still be available. Don’t assume you are not injured. A car accident is a traumatic experience, which can cause a multitude of feelings including fear, shock and anger. A release of adrenaline is usually your body’s first physical reaction during such an experience. Because of this “adrenaline rush” you may not feel injured at the scene. Many injuries do not manifest themselves until a few hours after the accident, or even a couple of days later. Don’t assume that you are not injured at the accident scene. Seek medical treatment right away if you feel injured. Do take pictures at the scene of the accident. Take pictures of your vehicle and the other driver’s vehicle. It is also a good idea to take a picture of their drivers license and their insurance information. Don’t give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company. Do not provide a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company without first consulting with an attorney. Many insurance adjusters will ask you questions that you do not understand, that may be confusing or that try to minimize your injuries. Do fill out a DMV Traffic Accident Report SR 1 after an accident if the total damage to your car is more than $1000.00 or someone is injured or killed. You have ten days to fill out the DMV SR 1, whether you caused

the accident or not. The SR 1 form is available on the DMV website at www.dmv.ca.gov and can be filled out directly online, printed out and sent to the DMV from the comfort of your own home. If you fail to submit a completed SR 1 to the DMV, the DMV can suspend your drivers license. Don’t post about your accident on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. While you may think that your accident is post-worthy because your car looks like you should not have walked away, you would be surprised at how far insurance companies will go to pay you as little as possible for any injuries you might have as a result of the accident. They also love it when you post photos of you riding on a jet ski during your twoweek vacation to Puerto Vallarta after the accident. Do consult with an attorney. Talk to an attorney before trying to settle your case. There are insurance companies that will offer you small amounts of money to settle your case fast even though your case is worth a lot more. If you need additional assistance our office provides a free consultation for all personal injury matters. THIS ARTICLE PROVIDES ONLY GENERAL LEGAL INFORMATION, AND NOT SPECIFIC LEGAL ADVICE. A Revocable Living Trust (“RLT”) is a legal document created during your lifetime that allows you to leave your real and personal property to beneficiaries of your choice. An RLT is very much like a Will with one BIG exception: there is no Probate with an RLT. This means that your RLT and the property in it will not be made public or subject to court supervision. Given the high cost of probate proceedings in California, which can easily be 4-6% of the fair market value of the assets irrespective of the debt against the assets, this is reason enough - especially if you own any real property. In most cases, the cost of transfer of title with an RLT is few hundred dollars. Also, there is a minimal time delay incurred in transferring assets to beneficiaries with an RLT because no court approval is required. In a probate, it can take years to transfer title. RLTs are called “living” because they are created while you are alive and your property is legally transferred to the trust when you create it. RLTs are “revocable” because you may, at any time prior to your death, revoke or change them. In fact, as there are changes in your life including marriage, divorce, the death of a beneficiary, or a change in financial or property situation, you should have the RLT reviewed by an attorney in order to ensure the changes are properly reflected in the Trust. While you are alive, you still own all of the property that has been transferred to your RLT. You can still sell the property in the trust, borrow against it, spend it or give it away. Assets in an RLT are treated much the same as direct ownership of property for income tax purposes. There are no additional taxes, tax returns or any necessity for

Wrapping up the year with smiles, thanks

Want to Save Money? Consider a Revocable Living Trust separate tax payer identification. Sometimes people say they are not concerned about probate fees because they are not going to be around. However, an RLT can be very important to you when you are alive because if you become incompetent due an accident or illness there can be an easy transfer of management of your property and affairs without the necessity of a court appointed conservator. Sometimes people are worried that RLT will cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to set up and maintain. For most people, an Estate Plan, including an RLT and all of the ancillary documents including a Power of Attorney and Healthcare Directive, should not cost more than $2,000-$2,500. Most attorneys allow people to make payments over time for the work. If you have separate property from a prior marriage or business interests that need to be included, it may be more, but then it is even more important that you properly plan for distribution of your assets in accordance with your wishes and without the prying eyes of the public and court system. If you have real property in the state of California or elsewhere, you should carefully consider how you are currently holding title to the property and whether an RLT may be a better idea for you. By the time this piece is published, another Christmas Eve at the Luckhardts will be over. All the packages for the grandkids will be saved memories in pictures, and the tree will be down and in the box for next year. But as I Senior write this, I am happy orner that so many of our family will be able to come, and I also hope that my baked ziti parmigiana is tasty. I guess I will be able to tell when the Tupperware is filled with leftovers as they Marla file out at the end of Luckhardt the night. It has been a crazy year with lots of fun times with friends and family, and I am very grateful for each and every moment. Although there have been some tears mixed in with the laughter, I truly have a lot to be thankful for. The holidays are a really emotional time for people, especially if they are alone or far from loved ones. The hype and build up before Christmas are probably as much fun as the actual date, but after a month of seasonal cheer, it can be a bit of a let down when the last wreath is stored away and the lights come down from outside. I guess the best advice I can give on that note is to smile and remember that in about 350 days, we can do it all again. Make sure you contact your senior family members who are unable to travel and wish them a joyful holiday. A phone call or a visit is better than any medicine for sure! I would like to thank my readers for the many emails, calls and posts on Facebook after reading my articles. It does my heart good to think that, in some small way, I have touched you. I get suggestions, questions and lots of hellos, saying, “I liked your article this week.” It started off over five years ago, and this marks my 400th column. I still get a real kick out of seeing it in print

C

and receiving lots of kind words from so many of you. The young man at the local Postal Annex always greets me with a smile and a warm hello. He reads my stories to his grandparents each week, and then asks what the next subject will be. I can’t tell you how much that makes my heart happy. Things like this are better than ice cream or pizza, and that’s saying a lot! Everyone who reads these articles I am honored to write knows that I was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island in a very small town called Island Park. Within the town of Island Park was a small island of houses called Harbor Isle. The entire community could fit in about a third of Discovery Bay. I post my articles each week on a special Facebook page dedicated to those of us who grew up there, and I am happy to say I have reconnected with many classmates I had not seen in over 50 years! I really don’t know how that part happened, but it’s my stories that have provoked some wonderful reunions. Grandpa says I am editorially bicoastal – imagine that! Soon comes the end of another year, and off we go into 2019 with hope and renewed optimism that our state and our country will heal from our wounds of fires and other things we sadly have little or no control over. We have to think positively and use the blank sheet of paper that starts the new year to draw beautiful pictures of better times for all. To those who lost their homes in the fires, I wish you prosperity and strength to replace what you can and recreate what you cannot. For those who have lost loved ones or are bravely dealing with illness, I wish you comfort and the courage to fight the good fight. I will keep you all in my heart and wish you a brand-new year filled with nothing but joy and gifts of positive energy. CLOSING DISCLOSURE Back in 2010, the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act created a new consumer protection agency called the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Much of what they do isn’t readily apparent to the average consumer of financial services. However, there is one thing that came out of this act that drastically changed how real estate transactions are handled starting a couple of years ago. One of the big complaints consumers had in the past was showing up at the closing table and being presented with radically different rate and terms than what they had been quoted when they applied for their loan. Lenders did have to provide a “Good Faith Estimate” of rate and terms, but the actual loan could vary widely from what was quoted earlier. The CFPB now requires that borrowers receive something called a “Closing Disclosure” (CD) at least 3 business days prior to being allowed to sign their loan documents. The CD continues the basic info about your loan, including the rate, the

payment, closing costs, whether there is a prepayment penalty or balloon payment, etc. It’s printed in a standard way so it’s the same format for every borrower. If the actual rate and terms on your actual loan documents vary in a substantial way prior to the borrower signing, a new CD must be given and a new waiting period starts over. This may be frustrating to you if you are trying to close escrow on a home purchase and your lender or title company representative tells you that you have to wait out the CD waiting period. But the point of this waiting period is to prevent an unscrupulous lender from jacking up your rate or throwing in extra fees or a prepayment penalty at the last second, and then counting on you being under time pressure and just signing the documents. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Voted “Best of Brentwood” multiple times. To search the MLS for free, go to: www.SharpHomesOnline.com. BART schedule for New Year’s Eve BART will operate until 3 a.m. on Jan. 1 with a special schedule that includes extra event trains following the New Year’s Eve fireworks show. The special schedule begins at 8 p.m. when select trains into and out of San Francisco will skip certain stops at the three busiest New Year’s Eve stations to minimize platform crowding. Information about the skip stops is below. Customers are encouraged to make sure their Clipper cards have enough value for an evening out or to purchase round-trip tickets in advance. First-time or infrequent riders often form long lines at the ticket vending machines. It’s

worth noting that BART does not offer free rides on New Year’s Eve because two thirds of its operating funds come from ticket sales. BART’s new Trip Planner and the official BART App have been updated to reflect the special schedule. In addition, the real-time departures, featured online and on the app, are handy for seeing when the next train will arrive, including those extra event trains. Another handy App is BART Watch, which allows riders to quickly and discreetly report criminal or suspicious activity directly to BART police. After operating until 3 a.m., BART

will resume service at 8 a.m., Jan. 1, operating on a holiday/Sunday schedule. Schedule notes: • Going into San Francisco after 8 p.m.: Antioch and Richmond line trains heading into San Francisco will not stop at Embarcadero Station. Exit at Montgomery Street Station for the fireworks show. • After the fireworks end: Antioch and Richmond line trains will not stop at Embarcadero Station. Use Montgomery Street Station to catch these trains. To view a complete schedule, visit https://bit.ly/2rRfYB3.

Furry Friends Pet Relief partners with Pets of the Homeless Furry Friends Pet Relief has been welcomed by the national nonprofit, Pets of the Homeless as a new donation site and pet food provider. Donations of pet food and supplies can be taken to 516 W. Second St., in Antioch, for direct distribution to the homeless with pets. Deliveries can also be made to local food banks, homeless shelters or homeless encampments. The program is an ongoing national effort to regularly supply donated pet food to local people who cannot afford to properly provide for their pets. Over the course of a year, millions of people become homeless with numbers rising. Approximately 80 percent of those who experience homelessness are homeless for a short period of time and usually need help finding housing or a rent subsidy. But unfortunately, for people with pets, it becomes more difficult, forcing them to choose between their pet and a roof over their head. Surprisingly, most choose to stay on the streets with their pets for longer periods of time. Their pets are their comfort, provide an emotional bond of loyalty and are nonjudgmental. It is estimated that one in four homeless and disadvantaged people have a pet. Pets of the homeless do not

MIKE’S ESTATE PLANNING MINUTE

Keith Eugene Dawson

By Michael J. Amthor, Esq.

HAVE YOU DISCUSSED YOUR ESTATE PLAN WITH OTHERS?

advantage of tax benefits. Here are some tips to getting the conversation started: 1) Choose a comfortable place to talk without disruptions, 2) Be clear about your intentions and wishes, and 3) Communicate the importance and benefits of this discussion. If you are an adult child, make sure your parents have their own estate plan. If you are a parent, make sure your children are informed regarding your wishes and desires after death. If you have minor children, make sure the guardians you have appointed are both willing and able to raise your children. If you are a grandparent or other family member, consider and discuss with your grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc. the potential of providing for them in your estate plan. The point is that although difficult, it is important to discuss these issues while able to do so. Doing so not only avoids conflicts and other misunderstandings, it ensures everyone is on the same page. If you have questions on this or any other estate planning topic, call me at (925) 516-4888. East County Family Law Group, 1120 Second Street, Brentwood. www.eastcountyfamilylaw.com

In my previous articles I have discussed the importance of having an estate plan. Once completed, however, it is very important to discuss your estate plan with not only your children (or other beneficiary), but also with those you have put in charge of that plan after death. It’s a given that this can be an uncomfortable conversation. Nonetheless, there are significant benefits to having these conversations. For example, you might assume that the person you appointed is comfortable with this appointment just to find out later that they are not ready or willing to do so. Discussing your intentions and desires with survivors now not only gives you peace of mind it also prevents uncertainty and conflict during an already difficult time (i.e. after death). These conversations are also important to make sure trustees/executors are not making decisions based on erroneous or outdated information. Other benefits include: 1) Peace of mind for those you put in charge, 2) Ensuring your family values are known and followed, 3) Prepares your family in the event you become incapacitated, and 4) Allows your family to take

Keith E. Dawson, “Dad, Gramps, Coach,” age 93, crossed his earthly finish line on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018. Keith was born in Pacific Grove, California, to Paul and Athelene Dawson but grew up in Sonora, California, where his love for athletics and the outdoors was fostered. Keith served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea. He attended Modesto Junior College then earned his degree and masters in education from College of Pacific. He was a member of the famed, undefeated COP 1949 football team and received recognition as one of the top collegiate athletes in America. Keith married his soul mate, Frances Light, in 1948. They remained together for 57 years until her death. He taught high school and coached in Oakdale and Tracy, then found his home in 1958 at Liberty High School in Brentwood, where he coached multiple sports and taught physical education for 28 years. Coach Dawson continued coaching track and field until age 88, positively influencing the lives of hundreds of athletes. The Liberty High School track is named for him to honor his years of dedication to the track program. Always a fitness role model, Coach would be seen jogging or bicycling everywhere. Keith was also an avid hunter and fisherman. In 2014, Keith left his home in Oakley to relocate in the Hughson and Modesto area.

He is survived by four loving daughters, Annette Dawson of Turlock, Ardith (Paul) Feucht of Hughson, Erica (Roy) Pantle of Oakley and Helene (Mas) Cramer of Turlock; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Celebration of life will take place at the Brentwood Community Center, Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to LUHSD Athletic Hall of Fame, 929 Second St., Brentwood, California, 94513; Coach Ferrill Athletic Scholarship, Liberty High School, 850 Second St., Brentwood, California, 94513; or a charity of your choice. Speeding tickets change with age Gone are the days when I could smile my way out of a speeding ticket. I think I am more upset about that than the amount of money I am going to have to shell out. I haven’t gotten a speeding ticket in 21 years! Doesn’t that count for something? Hangin’ in Hey, I will be the first person to agree that here speeding is dangerous. When I see a driver hauling down the road obviously breaking the speed limit, I shake my fist and yell, “Where are the cops?” Vicki I do not condone McKenna reckless and especially distracted driving, but since I have been advised to spare the judge my sob story, let me plead my case here. First, a little history. If you are familiar with Antioch, there is a well-known speed trap called James Donlon Boulevard. It has snared almost everyone I know. In fact, that is where I got my last ticket 21 years ago. The speed limit was ridiculously low – 35 mph. They recently changed it to 40 mph, but before they did, it was nearly impossible to obey the speed limit without applying your breaks. I was driving a green Ford Windstar van at the time. Hardly a high-performance vehicle, and my passengers were three kids, ages 8, 3

T

and 18 months. James Donlon has a bit of a downhill grade, so it’s easy to build up speed without knowing it, especially when you are busy breaking up arguments and switching Barney cassette tapes while driving. The lights flashed behind me and a motorcycle cop signaled me to pull my big green behemoth over to the side of the road. I didn’t even try to weasel my way out of it. All three kids were screaming and my 18-month-old needed a diaper change badly. Fast forward to the court date. I was determined to get the fine reduced by showing up. I thought bringing my three kids along would make the judge feel sorry for me. Somehow, I had forgotten shoes for my 18-month-old, which made me look even more pathetic. I brought a stroller and a large sack of toys to keep my kids busy. I was a spectacle. This was before cell phones. The toys were loud and distracting. The bailiff kept shooting me dirty looks and shaking his head. I didn’t care. I was determined to save money. Of course, I was the second to the last person called. I had been sitting there with my squirming kids for two hours. I stood up and pleaded guilty with a sheepish smile on my face. The judge looked at me, not amused, and reduced my fee by a paltry $20, which I spent at McDonald’s rewarding my children for being as patient as they could be. I was a much more careful driver after that. Fast forward to yesterday. I was

chatting with my brother on the phone, hands-free in case you’re wondering, as I made my way down James Donlon Boulevard. I was headed to Walnut Creek to see my mom. James Donlon winds around onto Somersville Road, which has been newly paved and is in the middle of a huge open space that used to be the dump. There are no houses anywhere around. Like James Donlon, it too has a bit of a downhill grade so you can coast at a pretty good clip. Out of the corner of my eye I saw it – an Antioch police car was parked off the road on the canal trail. I thought I might be going a bit fast, but I didn’t want to throw on my brakes. Wouldn’t that just make me look guilty? I watched my rear-view mirror. He was still parked. “Hey, I’m in the clear!” I thought to myself. I pulled into the left turn lane and awaited my light. Oh no! Suddenly he was right behind me, his lights flashing. My heart raced. I turned left and then into the Grocery Outlet parking lot. Drivers slowed to look at me. How humiliating. The officer came to my window. He was a good-looking officer, which softened the blow. He asked me if I knew why he pulled me over. I stammered. I tried to come up with something clever, but I was out of practice and perky cleavage. I had to make him feel sorry for me instead. I told him I was rushing to Walnut Creek to see my mother who has Alzheimer’s,

which is true but sounded like a lame and desperate excuse when it came out of my mouth. He said he was sorry about my mom, but I was going 57 mph in a 45 mph zone. In my humble opinion, (which I will spare the judge), that road should be 55 mph. It looks like a highway! It is not a residential area. I also decided not to share my opinion with the officer. Instead, I prayed for mercy as he ran my license. I texted my brother. “Just got pulled over for speeding! Sad-face emoji.” “Maybe you’ll get a pass… Thumbsup emoji,” he texted back. “Not 28 anymore! Three crying-face emojis,” I replied. The officer returned with the ticket, but at least he was nice about it. He said there had been a couple of bad accidents on that road recently, so they were patrolling it heavily. OK, how can you argue with that? I told him I was taking my daughter to get her license in a couple weeks. How ironic. “Make sure you tell her it’s 45 mph on Somersville Road,” he said and flashed a smile. “Have a nice day.” Once again, I will be showing up for my court date in hopes of getting the fine reduced, although sadly this time I will not be bringing a stroller and a sack of toys. I will be sure to wear shoes. Maybe I will get more than $20 off my $300 fine, and hopefully, I won’t get another speeding ticket for 21 years.

Agent Showcase

Your key to finding the right local real estate professional.

I like to think I’m a new kind of real estate professional. I combine the personal service of a traditional, neighborhood agent with the latest, web-based and mobile technologies to create an efficient, secure and convenient transaction. I am an East Bay native and a second-generation realtor. I studied economics at Westmont College, in Santa Barbara, and I did my graduate work at

the University of Colorado at Denver. I also have a certificate in computer programming from Denver Technical College. I specialize in marketing and selling single-family homes and other residential units for primary owneroccupants and investors throughout East Contra Costa County. Brentwood is my home, but my friends and clients take me to Antioch,

Oakley and Discovery Bay almost daily. I don’t just work in these neighborhoods, I live my life in them. My dad taught me real estate is about cooperation, about serving others and, mostly, about hard work. My experience has also taught me it is as rewarding as anything else I could do; my clients always become my friends, even if we don’t start out that way.

Heritage High School boys’ wrestling squad wins Lou Bronzan Invitational by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Lou Bronzan Invitational was held at Liberty High School, but it was another Brentwood school that really stood out. Heritage High School one-upped its Brentwood rival to win the Liberty-hosted Dec. 22 Lou Bronzan Invitational. Heritage (165.5 points) edged Liberty (160.5) in the standings, with Windsor (153.5) and Lincoln High (146.5) close behind. The win was the Patriots’ second tournament victory in the school’s history, coming just a week after the first – at Northgate High School’s BIll Bill Martell Invitational, Dec. 15. “Tonight, it’s like the kids said, ‘Merry Christmas, Coach,’” said eight-year Heritage head coach Mark Barnes. Heritage’s Cody Pruis (160 pounds) and Jacob Alves (182 pounds) both emerged as weight-class winners, proudly sporting championship belts by the end of the night. Pruis, who entered the tournament 170, edged past Castro Valley’s Maximilian Plotzeneder in a 3-1 decision to capture his title, while Alves, a senior, defeated Ponderosa High’s Dylan Humbird in a 3-2 decision in his championship match. “I have been attending this tournament for four years now,” said Pruis. “Ever since I knew there was a belt for this tournament,

I was gunning for it. When I stepped onto the mat (in my championship match), I was a little nervous, but I got hold of him and all my nerves went away.” Prius also defeated St. Patrick-St. Vincent’s Diego Barba, Albany’s Stephan Panian, San Ramon Valley’s Timothy Greenhouse and Petaluma’s Derrick Pomi in the tournament. Alves, meanwhile, said he relished the opportunity to compete. He knocked off Lincoln’s Julian Gonzales, Tera Linda’s Nantri Cleveland, Rio Linda’s Jack Clark and Newark Memorial’s Matthew Costa before disposing of Humbird to go home a champion. “It was really challenging,” said Alves, who entered the tournament 16-2 this season. “I was just happy to have the opportunity. It was a lot of fun.” Other Heritage placers included Hunter Holguin (106 pounds), Nathan Brennan (120) and Caesar Borela(170) – who all finished third – and Elijah Sanchez (132), who captured sixth. “This was just history in the making,” Barnes said of his team’s victory. “We are very proud of our guys – they worked hard.” Not to be outdone, Heritage junior Lea Navales defeated Chico High’s Lily Sajadi by technical fall in the 143-pound final to win her first-ever high school championship see Wrestling page 18

Freedom wrestler takes top prize in elite event by Michael Dixon Staff Writer

As one of the best wrestlers in the state, Freedom’s Dalia Garibay entered her senior season with high expectations. And in the early going, she’s met them. Garibay recently earned victory in the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions (WWTOC) in Rocklin. While Garibay normally wrestles at 137 pounds and will wrestle at 132 in the postseason tournaments, Garibay wrestled the WWTOC at 143, not wanting to worry about cutting weight during finals. It made no difference. Garibay won her first three matches via pinfall and her fourth on points. “I kind of just went out there; I had my game plan and did what I do best,” she said. “I stuck to my game plan and wrestled my match. I did what I wanted to do. I didn’t let them take control of the match.” The WWTOC is a particularly

notable event because of the competition. It features both high school and college wrestlers, the only all-women’s tournament in the country to do so. With college wrestlers participating,

the WWTOC is a natural scouting ground for colleges to see the top high school wrestlers. As such, it tends to attract a very strong group. But while Garibay praised

her competition, she also went into the tournament with a great deal of confidence. “I put respect on everybody else,” said Garibay. “I know that I have my strengths and my weaknesses. But I know that if I just go out there and wrestle my match that I can win.” Garibay followed her WWTOC win up with a victory at the Brittany David Invitational, hosted at Liberty. There, she wrestled at 137s and defeated Mary Lopez of the Lions by a 2-1 decision in the final. Garibay views events like these as not only prestigious tournaments but great opportunities to improve herself for the big postseason tournaments – like North Coast Section and state. “All my tournaments make me better; they help me move on to my next tournament,” she said. “It’s just a stepping stone. I got my mat time, got to work on my moves that I had been working on. It’s all about hitting my peak at NCS and state so I can perform at my best.”

Wrestling from page 17 in the concurrent girls Brittany David Invitational. “It feels great,” said Navales, who improved her record to 14-3 with the four victories. Navales, who earned a first-round bye, defeated College Park’s Amy Guzman, Casa Grande’s Skylar Finley and Liberty’s Charlis Vega before ousting Sajadi to win the title. Emily Diaz (106 pounds) also finished fourth for Heritage. Albany High School held off Liberty 162-136 to emerge as the Brittnay David Invitational team winner. Despite looking up in the team standings, Liberty had a nice showing in the tournament. Nate Paulson (145) and Adrian Chavez (195) both won their brackets, with Paulson defeating Lincoln High’s Jackson King by fall (3:21) and Chavez beating Arroyo’s Hussein Abushi by fall (1:36) in their championship matches. Paulson also defeated Livermore’s Colby Cairel, Rancho Cotate’s Nik Oba, Dougherty Valley’s Shady Henry and Granite Bay’s Azary Matsuda en route to the title. Meanwhile, Chavez also ousted Bear Creek’s Angelo Martinez, Dougherty Valley’s Aiden Sanchez, Granite Bay’s Jackson Kohls and St. Patrick-St Vincent’s Mateo Celaya in the tournament. Fellow Lions Cole Gregerson (126) and Cade Ignatov-Martinez (132) finished second in their weight classes, while Josh Gonzalez (113) captured sixth and Casey

Strand (138) eighth. Other top finishers included Freedom’s Caleb Hunter (285) ending in fourth and teammate Daniel Feustel (152) fifth. Pittsburg’s Isaiah Chatman (220) captured second, and Deer Valley’s Frank Tirado (182) finished third. Antioch’s CJ Arana (120) took fifth. Meanwhile, Liberty’s Alyssa Sequeira (106) won her weight class in the girls’ tournament, while teammate Mary Lopez (137) finished second. Sequeira knocked off Northgate High’s Liv Villanueva by fall (4:32) to win the title. She also defeated Pittsburg’s Leanna Rabuco, Albany’s Jennifer Yang and Heritage’s Diaz during the event. The Lions’ Vega finished third, with Samantha Calkins (170) finishing fourth, Jaden Wilson (116) fifth and Ysabella Palomares (150) eighth. Freedom’s Dalia Garibay (13-1 this season) won the 137-pound bracket for the Falcons, while Deer Valley’s Arine Kim (121) ended the day in fifth, with teammates Soraide Lizarde (160) in seventh and Jade Estrada (170) in eighth. Garibay squeaked by Liberty’s Lopez in a 2-1 decision to capture the title. She also defeated Chico High’s Houa Lo, Tokay High’s Hailie Beadles and Albany’s Joanna Qiu in the tournament. Pittsburg’s Alyssa Ballardo (160) finished sixth to round out the top Bay Valley Athletic League finishers in the girls’ tournament. To view a video, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia

Seek Expert Help and Guidance If you want expert advice and support, contact a family lawyer who can help you along on this journey of getting through a divorce. It is also a great idea to seek financial guidance from your accountant or financial advisor. This will help you to make plans for the future. Engage In Respectful Communication Once you are in the process of separation, it is important to continue communicating respectfully with your ex-partner; as well as with family members and friends. of Heritage’s basketball program for long. A move to California from Ohio last year brought him onto the school’s team, where he made an immediate impression on his coaches and teammates as an aggressive point guard. A veteran player, Manjon quickly became part of the team’s successful season his junior year and is now helping to lead the Patriot’s basketball team to more victories. “I love everything about (basketball),” said Manjon. “I like meeting people who play, I like playing, I love the adrenalin rush that comes with the game and the crowd, and everything.” Manjon started playing basketball with his older brother when he was 3. His mother signed him up for a recreational league in their hometown in Ohio, and Manjon never looked back. When he wasn’t playing, he and his family often watched games on television, especially when his cousin, who had made it to the NBA, was on. “I think that being a leader, working hard and playing through adversity is what it takes to be a good player,” Manjon explained.

Most people enter into marriage with dreams of everlasting happiness and with the highest hopes. It is not usually to be expected that either party will have an affair. When it does happen, it rocks your world. Here are some tools to help navigate dealing with an affair. Stay Calm During the Emotional Storm Finding out your partner had an affair or is still having an affair, has the potential to severely alter your reality. It is an emotional rollercoaster and full of questions. When a decision is made to divorce under these circumstances, it is possible to do it amicably. The key is to stay calm and controlled, and to keep a level head. Now is the time to take control, show what you are made of, and ensure you can create a better future for yourself and dependents, if you have children.

The physical reminders will encapsulate a scintillating 13-1 season that saw Liberty outscore its opponents 557-195 en route to the title – and it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. The California Interscholastic Federation will no longer allow nonsection champions to advance to the bowl game series, meaning that the Lions will need to march through vaunted national powerhouse De La Salle – the only team to beat Liberty this season – to reach another state title game. The squad also bid goodbye to retiring 36-year assistant

Help arrived in many forms on the path to open New To You’s doors, but one was an unexpected shopper, Pauline Davis, who took note of Langston when work first began on the property. “I was just getting fish, and then I saw this old man out here sweeping the parking lot,” Davis said. “I went to check it out and see what he was doing, and he said, ‘I’m opening up a business and I need your help.’ At that time,

Suffice to say, it was a great one this year.” Partridge, who’s guided the Lions to North Coast Section and state championships in his first two seasons, agreed. “The relationships that I built with each and every player are things that you can’t make up,” he said. “I loved each and every one of (the players) so much.” For their part, the Liberty players largely deflected the spotlight onto the often forgotten elements that fueled their

Brain tumors and a surgery to remove them in the previous years had put Davis in the position of relearning basic skills. “I said, ‘Well, Dr. Langston, I can’t go back to work – I can do what I can do, but I don’t want to be overloaded,’” Davis said. “It’s been helping me heal – it’s helped me get my mind back strong. Among others who contribute to organizing the merchandise and greeting customers, donations have poured in from the community and even other businesses, such as Kmart, which donated thousands of dollars worth of toys before the holiday season. The volunteers noted that all homeless individuals who walk

Jack Stone Insurance Agency announced it was awarded $2,000 as a participant in the Safeco Insurance Change Agents campaign. The donation will go to the East County Veterans Support Services (ECVSS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting veterans and military families transitioning from military service, as well as active-duty military and troops deployed. The program rewards independent agents whose volunteer efforts make a difference in their communities and recognizes that small, everyday steps can have a big local impact. Jerry Stone of Jack Stone Insurance Agency was one of two agents nationwide who garnered the most attention on social media for their charitable efforts related to supporting troops and veterans in order to receive the $2,000 donation from Safeco Insurance. Agents were selected by submitting photos of their passion project, and 10 finalists were chosen. A Facebook album on the Safeco Insurance page was then created for a public voting contest.
