Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) owes the Town of Discovery Bay $22,000 and is taking its time to pay up. The money is a form of compensation for the time and trouble caused during the large-scale gas outage that took place in December, and for the use of the town’s community center building as a warming center during the outage. PG&E also bestowed a grant to the Byron Union School District in the amount of $5,000 for the use of Timber Point Elementary as a warming center. During the outage, gas service was suspended for roughly 6,300 customers in Discovery Bay and Byron on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 27, for a still unidentified problem. Most residents had service restored by the evening of Dec. 29. At the regular Community Services District (CSD) Board meeting in January, the board and town staff thanked Tom Guarino of PG&E, who presented the money in the form of a cardboard novelty see PG&E page 30A

Old River Elementary School reopening by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent
After closing its doors to students nearly six years ago, Old River Elementary School is set and ready to welcome them back to the classroom next month. “We’re all very excited to see Old River Elementary open once again,” said Adam McMeans, Knightsen School Board president. “As a parent who drove past the shuttered campus nearly daily, it was a constant reminder of the hardship the district’s students endured during the recent recession. I’m glad those days are behind us.” Opened in 2008 under Principal Ray Witte, the school was forced to send its student popu-

Ray Witte, principal Old River Elementary lation to Knightsen School in 2010, when the faltering economy cut both local support and state funding. Since that time, the school district has leased classrooms to the Delta Academy for Learning, The Lynn Center and a Kids Club preschool program. Recent building in The Lakes development in Discovery Bay however, has changed all that, and Witte is now looking forward to being back in the
principal’s office. “I’m so excited, and I’m so happy to be out here again,” said Witte. “The district is pleased to offer a school close to the kids. We have beautiful facilities and nice big fields. We’ll keep the good traditions from Knightsen and create some new traditions of our own.” Old River will reopen in July as an elementary school, offering transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. While the
district is working on a plan to add a middle school, there are no immediate dates on the books. “One idea that has made the rounds is that next school year, 2017 to 2018, our current fifth graders will be the first sixth graders, and so on, until we are a fully functioning kindergarten through eigth-grade school,” Witte said. “But, the board has not approved that idea yet.” Theresa Estrada, superintendent of Knightsen School District, is excited about the reopening. “The major difference for my job is that I will have two school sites to visit and participate in activities at, instead of just one,” said Estrada. see Old River page 30A

Barr leads in county supervisorial race Measure B cementing win As outstanding ballots continue to be counted in the race for Contra Costa County Supervisor District 3, Brentwood City Councilman Steve Barr remains in the lead against East Bay Regional Park District Director Diane Burgis. In order to secure a win for the seat
vacated by Mary Piepho, a 50-percentplus-one majority is needed. As of June 10, Barr had garnered 28.75 percent of the vote with a total of 10,214 votes, and Burgis had 22.89 percent of the vote and 8,134 votes. The two will faceoff in the general election on Nov. 8. According to Elections Processing Supervisor Rosa Mena, the 25,000 remaining countywide provisional and absentee ballots were expected to be tallied by Friday,
June 17, with a final count on June 22, if necessary. For Brentwood’s Measure B, the news continues to be positive as final votes are counted. The measure needs a 55 percent approval rate to pass. At press time, the measure had 56.23 percent
of the vote, translating into 6,708 votes. The passage of Measure B would free up $158 million to build new schools and renovate the district’s schools. The measure would cost property owners about $28 per $100,000 of assessed value for the next 25 to 30 years.
Dead bird tests positive for West Nile Virus The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District confirmed a dead bird from Antioch tested positive for West Nile virus, the first bird this year in Contra Costa County. The bird was found near the intersection of Prewett Ranch and Mokelumne drives. “This is not a surprise, as we are already seeing virus activity in surrounding counties,” said Steve Schutz, Ph.D., the district’s scientific program manager. “We need
more people to report dead birds, so we can learn where (the) virus might be taking place. We can only test dead birds if we receive reports from members of the public. So far this year, we are getting fewer calls than in the past, and we definitely could use more.” Two species of mosquitoes in Contra Costa County capable of transmitting the virus prefer to feed on birds. People can become infected when a mosquito bites an infected bird and then a person. Symptoms of the mild form
include fever, headache, tiredness, body aches, and swollen lymph glands. While the illness can last only a few days, even healthy people have reported being sick for several weeks. West Nile virus of the severe form can be fatal. Reports from the public are critical in helping the district direct mosquito-prevention operations. Members of the public can report dead birds to the state hotline at 1-877-968-2476 or by visiting the California Department of Public Health’s website.
Health fair aimed at helping East County men The first East County Men’s Health and Wellness Fair will offer free screenings and health education, promote re-entry work and link men from the area and their families to medical services, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, June 18, at Pittsburg City Park, at 17th Street and
Railroad Avenue, in Pittsburg. Attendees will be able to get shingles and pneumonia immunizations, Tdap booster shots, glucose testing, blood pressure checks, rapid onsite testing for HIV and hepatitis C, health education on substance abuse and addiction, prostate
awareness, benefits of cardiovascular exercises, CPR education and haircuts. The men’s health fair is being held in conjunction with the seventh-annual Juneteenth Celebration, in Pittsburg. The health fair is being sponsored by Contra Costa Health Services, in partner-
ship with Souljahs, the American Heart Association, Walgreens and 1st Nor Cal Credit Union. Contra Costa Regional Health Foundation, Los Medanos Community Healthcare District and Supervisor Federal Glover provided funding support for the event.

“It was always our dream to live in a vineyard, and this looked impossible, but it all fell into place,” said Michelle. “We feel God’s peace and rest here.” The Campos’, who own S.W.I.M. Inc., a storm water and environmental business (which they will continue to run), have raised their family in the area and look forward to continuing to be active participants in the community on a little larger scale.

It’s been barely a week since Michelle and Ric Campos took over ownership of Leer Vineyards in Byron, but the former Discovery Bay residents have already hit the ground running. “We have had a couple of events that were planned before (the sale), and we’re having a 50th birthday party here on Saturday and a Father’s Day event on Sunday,” said Michelle. “It’s going really well, and we are kind of figuring out how to run this. We’re getting organized and putting our team together.” The Campos’ finalized the sale of the popular venue and winery from Stefan and Tanisha Leer on June 10 and have done what they said they would do as the new owners kept the entertainment, trademark concerts and special events flowing along with the wine. “Much of what the Leers have done so beautifully, we will continue to do and put our own flavor on it,” said Michelle. “We plan to have a harvest party to dedicate the land and a farm-to-table popup dinner in early August.” Although the Campos’ plan to change the name of the facility – an announcement is in the near future – for now, Michelle says they are just working on keeping things running and enjoying their amazing gift.

Fire district may switch to elected board by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Board will ask voters in November if they approve switching to a five-member elected board. The move comes seven months after the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors agreed to pledge $312,000 to help open a fourth station if the district considered some changes, including switching to an elected body. “This question has never gone to the public,” said Fire Chief Hugh Henderson. “I don’t know if there is ever a good time to do it, but this seems to be the right time to move forward, with the work of the task force (to get a fourth station reopened) and the request of the board of supervisors. As the cities and the county have appointed different directors, the discussion has always been that at some point this board needs to move forward, be on its own two feet and be an elected board.” Since 2009, the cities of Brentwood and Oakley and the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors have appointed the nine board members. Prior to that, the board of supervisors served as the district board for the first seven years of its existence. The district considered posing the question to voters in 2011, but scrapped the effort over concerns about its cost. This time around, the board seems
poised to move forward, with the resolution passing in an 8-1 vote. Dr. Cheryl Morgan cast the lone dissenting vote. Morgan said that having the district represented by an elected board would backfire. She expressed concern that the elected board will get rid of the contract with CalFire, which is currently used to serve parts of unincorporated areas of the district. “I don’t think this will end up being good for the district,” she said. “I think you are going to get back into a situation where Morgan Territory, Marsh Creek and now Byron are going to petition again and use whatever legal means they have to separate. There is no reason for us to be part of this district if we are eventually going to lose the Amador (CalFire) contract and have no fire service.” Bethel Island resident Mark Whitlock expressed a similar concern. “Logistically, for us in Bethel Island, we have a very big concern about having zero representation, with Brentwood and Oakley owning the lion’s share of voters,” he said. The measure on the November ballot

will only ask voters if they will approve switching to an elected board. If the measure receives a majority vote, the board seats would be filled in a separate election in November 2017. The initial election is slated to cost the district around $112,000. Opinions varied among board members on whether future board members should be elected at large or by wards. If the district is broken into wards, a consultant would be brought in, costing an unknown amount. This would ensure the wards are broken up evenly, based on population, and confirm no member of the populous is left unrepresented. The majority of fire agencies in Contra Costa County are governed using elected boards, with the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District using a ward system and the San Ramon Valley and Rodeo-Hercules fire protection districts using an at-large system. The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors governs the nearby Contra Costa Fire Protection District and Crockett-Carquinez Fire Department. Board president Joel Bryant said regardless of how the district board is cho-
sen, it would have a responsibility to represent every district resident. “This district as a whole is responsible for fire protection,” he said. “Ward or no ward, the responsibility will be the same.” Board members Randy Pope and Meghan Bell both expressed support for breaking the district into wards to ensure residents in unincorporated areas are adequately represented. “I feel very strongly it should be by ward, and we (should) pay close attention to how the lines are drawn to make sure every type of area has representation, because it would be very easy for Brentwood and Oakley to steamroll the rest of the unincorporated, lower-density population areas,” said Pope. Board member Erick Stonebarger countered that board members elected district-wide would be a better representation model, because each member could represent the entire district. “I think the best representation for the district is a district-wide line,” he said. “Everyone would be able to vote for whomever was the best candidate to take that position.” The district board plans to further discuss the matter at its June 20 meeting, which will be held inside the Oakley City Council Chambers, at 3231 Main St. The time of the meeting will be announced on June 18, at eccfpd.org. Last week, I told you about a website where you can get your credit report for free on the Internet, at www.annualcreditreport. com. I wanted to point out a dirty little trick some credit-card companies play that can erroneously lower your credit score, which you should watch out for. Take a careful look at your creditcard accounts. There should be three dollar amounts listed for each account. First is your credit limit, next is your current balance and then your monthly payment. If your credit limit doesn’t show, your credit score is lower than it should be! Here is what is going on behind the scenes of the credit-card industry. It is a highly competitive environment, and these companies are going after the same prospective customers. They will routinely search through the vast database of credit bureaus, looking for people with good credit to solicit. We’ve all received those offers in the mail to pay off your existing cards with this ‘new’ card at a lower
rate. If you get a lot of these offers in the mail, it means you have good credit scores. Once the credit-card companies have you as a customer, they don’t want to lose you to a competitor. So in a defensive move, some of them will deliberately omit to post your credit limit, which shows up as a “0” on your report. When the credit-scoring computer looks at your file, it looks at the ratio of your outstanding balances against your available credit. By having a “0” credit limit on a few cards, it makes it look like you have ‘maxed’ out your credit lines. This drops your credit score, making you less likely to be solicited by competitors. Tricky, huh? If this is happening to you, demand that your credit card accurately report your limit, or you will cancel your card. If you have questions on this or any other real-estate topic, call me at 925-240-MOVE (6683). #1 for Brentwood listings sold 11 out of last 14 years. Father’s Day weekend at Dell’Osso Family Farm will be a bacon lover’s paradise, featuring Byron’s very own chef Roberto Rose, owner of the Byron Inn Café. Rose is one of eight professional chefs from the Bay Area chosen to enter a cooking contest emceed by celebrity chef and TV personality Guy Fieri. On June 18 and 19, Dell’Osso Family Farm will be hosting the inaugural Baconfest, a celebration of America’s mightiest meat. The weekend will be filled with food vendors, beers, bands, kids rides, activities and the World Bacon Eating Championship, as well as the much anticipated cook-off contest, featuring California’s best chefs. “I’m ecstatic to be part of the competition and want to put this town on the map,” said Rose, who will be introduced by Guy Fieri as the ‘Italian Cowboy.’ Originally from Napoli, Italy, Rose moved to the states as a teen and worked in upscale restaurants in San Francisco before he taking over the Byron Inn Café last October, bringing with him his farmto-fork philosophy. Rose makes everything in house, including the buns, bread, pizza dough, sauces and pasta, which he rolls out by hand on the bar.
“ I’m ecstatic to be part of the competition and want to put this town on the map.
”
Roberto Rose owner, Byron Inn Café He will be cooking his signature ‘waffle’wich’ at the competition, which is a customer favorite at his café. “The waffle’wich concept is something I actually dreamt about before adding it to the menu,” said Rose. The waffle’wich is made with crispy bacon pieces, cheese and green onions cooked into a waffle batter; then, the waffles are used to sandwich crispy, fried chicken breasts topped with a fresh spring mix and sweet apricot aioli. “For the competition, I will be modifying the recipe slightly to add more bacon, including two crispy, chipotle-candied bacon strips,” said Rose, who added that it will be featured at the café for a limited time after the competition. Let’s begin with goal setting. As the Cheshire Cat said in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” As you can imagine, you can feel a bit lost and directionless pretty quickly that way. When you set detailed goals for your divorce, including parenting, financial and emotional goals, you have a path to follow for those days when the emotional roller coaster of divorce seems overwhelming. If you choose not to envision life after your divorce, it’s easy to begin thinking like a victim, and that will only lead to unhappiness, today and possibly into the future. The following are a few thoughts to get you started. Your goals should reflect your unique situation. Children: I want my children to feel happy and well adjusted. I want discipline of the children to be consistent between myself and my ex. I want my ex and I to support each other in our parenting decisions. I want to understand what my children need during the divorce. I don’t want our children to feel like they have to
choose between parents. I don’t want my children to have to change schools. I want my children to continue their after-school activities. Financial: I want to pursue a fulfilling and satisfying career. I want to get out of debt. I want my ex to live within his or her means. I want to learn how to manage my money. I want to save money for retirement. I want to find someone to help me develop good money habits (such as a money coach or counselor). Emotional: I want a respectful relationship with my ex. I want to be treated fairly. I want to feel less angry, frightened or anxious. I want to find someone to support me emotionally during the divorce (such as a therapist or coach). I want to listen or express myself better. Stay tuned for more tips on journaling. If you or a friend needs assistance in a divorce or child-custody matter, contact the Law Offices of Silky Sahnan at 925276-0789. We hope these tips are helpful with an initial consultation. – Advertisement

Relay for Life ready to round the track by Ana Hurt
Correspondent For the 12th year in a row, Brentwood is preparing for its Relay for Life event, a fundraising campaign and 24-hour march to promote awareness and support for those affected by cancer. The event will be held at Heritage High School on June 25, at 9 a.m. This year’s theme is ‘Hollywood – Lights, Camera, Relay.’ Each team has a campsite, since the event goes overnight, and they are encouraged to decorate their site according to the theme. Participants include individuals and teams, who can preregister or register the day of the event. To date, this year’s relay has 32 teams and 166 participants. Brentwood’s Relay for Life contributes thousands of dollars each year to cancer-related foundations, and this year, the organization aims to raise $115,000. More than a quarter of this amount has been raised already, thanks to hardworking teams and individuals. However, most of the money is raised on the day of the event, according to Renee Mariani, event lead. In addition, Relay for Life continues to fundraise through August 31. Foundations that receive funding from

This year’s Relay for Life Brentwood event will be held on June 25 and 26, at Heritage High School. Last year’s event, pictured above, raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society. Relay include Road to Recovery, The Hope Lodge and Look Good Feel Better. These foundations provide transportation, lodging and self-confidence to those battling cancer in the community. This event does much more than raise money, however. “Relay is an opportunity for the com-
munity to connect with each other,” Mariani said. “Survivors and caregivers can meet other people who are going through, or have gone through, similar experiences. It brings the community closer as a whole - we camp out overnight and walk the track in the middle of the night to support those fighting the disease,
because cancer doesn’t sleep, so neither will we.” For the many survivors, taking part in this event provides a sense of hope. For Survivor Chair Denise Plummer, this effect is incredibly personal. “I’ve always done it in memory of my mom, but this year it’s a little different, since I’m doing it for myself,” Plummer said. “The biggest thing is being able to fight back and find a cure.” Throughout the 24 hours, five different events remind participants of all the different aspects of dealing with this disease. The survivors and caregivers laps take place at the beginning of the day, to celebrate those who beat cancer and those who helped them. The luminaria ceremony takes place at the end of the day, so participants can honor and remember the loved ones they’ve lost to cancer with personalized lanterns.. The fight-back ceremony takes place the next morning, at the end of the event, when participants pledge to continue fighting the disease. PETS
Do they really fight like cats and dogs? Cats and dogs have long been depicted as ardent foes, consistently getting into scrapes with one another, but are those claims exaggerated? Many cats and dogs peacefully coexist in their homes, where their divergent personalities combine to make life more interesting. Cats and dogs tend to have different body language, but that should not be mistaken for opposition. For example, a boisterous puppy that excitedly approaches visitors with its tail wagging is showing friendliness. According to the animal experts at SlimDoggy.com, a resource for dog food, fitness and fun, cats interpret wagging tails as signs of anger or displeasure. Dogs like to sniff their friends and get to know them, but cats don’t like this attention. When sniffed, cats may run off, unintentionally triggering dogs’ natural predator instincts. Such an instance is a rough way for cats and dogs to begin a relationship, and it’s easy to see how such an introduction can lay a poor foundation for their relationship. Cats and dogs also have different social styles. While a cat may be con-
tent to be alone and approach visitors cautiously, dogs tend to be sociable and rush into situations if they think there is fun to be had. Despite these differences, cats and dogs can peacefully coexist. One way to foster a good relationship between them is to control their initial introduction. If possible, separate the animals initially, giving cats a chance to warm up to their new situation. Upon introducing the two, it may be best to have the dog on a leash, so that you can control its desire to lunge. Calmness is key; do not force the cat to come to the dog or vice versa. Reward calm behavior with treats. Repeat these steps until the pets appear to be used to each other. It’s important that pet owners recognize that, while cats and dogs may peacefully coexist in a home most of the time, their natural instincts may kick in every so often. Just separate the pets if they have a tiff. With some early socialization, patience on the part of pet owners and an understanding of cat and dog behaviors, pet parents can ensure both cats and dogs live together in harmony. – Courtesy of Metro Creative

Keeping a leg up on spider bites Just like Little Miss Muffet on her famous tuffett, a spider came and sat down beside my mom; but unlike the famous children’s story, Mom was not frightened away. She didn’t see Senior the big, bad spider orner coming and never felt the bite it took on her leg. A small red spot grew over a few days, and then her leg swelled up with painful tightness from just below the knee to her foot. Marla Now both she and I Luckhardt were frightened. A doctor visit resulted in a trip to the emergency room to check for possible clots that can be caused by the swelling, and the heat from her leg suggested that there was also an infection. An ultrasound determined there luckily was no clot, but the infection from the spider bite was severe enough to warrant antibiotics and some rest, elevating the leg. Spider bites are nothing to take lightly, and I can recall a few times when I woke up with a huge red welt on a part of my body, not knowing how or when it happened - you don’t always feel it. Obviously, every spider is different, and so each spider bite will be different, but there are lots of similar symptoms that
C
you can expect regardless of the species of spider in question. Some can cause headaches, sweating, nausea, fever, swelling and joint pain. No matter what, you should always call or visit your doctor, since you don’t know what reactions you will have, even days after the initial contact with the culprit. Spider bites differ with regards to how poisonous it is. It’s never worth taking the risk if you don’t know what kind of spider has bitten you, as the venom injected into the body could cause serious health problems or even death. No matter what kind of spider bites you, you will notice a puncture mark where it has actually pierced your skin. It may be hard to see without a magnifying glass, and in Mom’s case, that is exactly what the doctor used to see it. A good example of this is the bite of the black widow spider. You will see two clear puncture marks on the skin, which initially appear red and begin itching. As the body tries to protect the area, it will send fluid to the area. This will cause swelling, not just around the puncture mark, but also around surrounding the whole limb that has been affected. So, if you’re bitten on the foot, you might expect swelling that extends past the ankle and even up the leg. In her case, Mom’s point of contact was in the middle of her lower leg, which affected the foot and total calf. The doctor also took her temperature a

few times, since the body will use sweat to try to force out the toxins, resulting in a fever. Obviously, not all bites are from spiders. Sometimes, that pesky mosquito bite just needs a little hydrocortisone cream and time to heal. While most bug bites and stings are harmless, some can be dangerous if not treated properly, especially if you have an undiagnosed allergy to some particular bug venom, or if that bug is a disease carrier. It’s summertime and lots of insects are around, upping our chances for contact, so be aware of your skin and any changes. If you are at all unsure of the
severity of a bite, call your doctor. Pain, swelling and fever are three real clues that something is wrong, but they are not always the only symptoms. Mom is doing well, but my best advice is to check out any bite. It can take a few days to a week to have a severe reaction, and staying on the side of caution is crucial. For me, I personally prefer interaction with only butterflies and ladybugs. Marla Luckhardt is a Brentwood resident who works with several local senior care and advocacy groups. BART seeking tax to fix rail system by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system could stay on track to accomplish a long list of projects if voters approve a $3.5 billion bond in November. The money would be used to improve safety, increase train reliability and reduce traffic on the 107-mile, decades-old system. “Right now, the system is 40-plus years old, ridership is growing and everything about the system is aging, so this is an effort to modernize the system,” said BART Board Director Joel Keller, who represents East County residents. The measure will appear on Contra Costa, Alameda and San Francisco county ballots, the only three over which BART has taxing authority. If approved by a combined two-thirds majority, property-tax bills will increase in Contra Costa County by an average of $37 a year for 30 years. The exact amount would depend on the assessed value of property. The proposed measure is being described by transit officials as a ‘fix-it first plan,’ with 90 percent of funds slated to repair and replace critical safety infrastructure and 10 percent aimed at relieving crowding and increasing access to stations. The aging railway averages 129 million trips annually and various physical parts of it are coming to the end of their useful lives, often causing mechanical failures that lead to delays, BART officials said.
If approved, officials say there would be 40 percent fewer delays caused by mechanical issues than occur today. “This bond measure is practical; it’s dedicated to fixing what we have,” said BART Board President Tom Radulovich. “We have a responsibility to keep our system safe and reliable, while getting the maximum value out of taxpayers’ investment.” Keller said the agency and its riders are doing their part to fix the aging system, but more funds are needed. A bi-annual fare increase adopted in 2013 is slated to generate a total of $325 million for capital improvement projects by 2020, and the agency has put half a billion dollars in operating funds into its capital improvement budget over the last decade, according to Keller. “We are trying to reduce the need of taxpayers, but at the end of the day, we have things that are not very glamorous,” he said. “The power, track and stations are 40-plus years old. Our signaling system is (more than) 40 years old.” Key improvements slated to occur if the measure is approved include replacing 90 miles of worn, original rail; modernizing the train control system, which should result in fewer delays and reduced wait times between trains; replacing or adding electrical substations to maintain and improve service reliability; and replacing the emergency generators and backup power supplies responsible for continuous power to train control, communication equipment and emergency lighting. For Contra Costa County residents, the
transit agency is promising to explore parking options for at-capacity stations, as well as improving access to facilities, which could include bus lanes or bike stations. Officials also say they plan to refurbish or replace broken escalators to improve reliability of the Pittsburg-Bay Point line, which carries 8,200 people hourly during rush hour. “Of (the measure), 10 percent will go to access, which for us out here could mean improved parking opportunities,” Keller said. The measure comes while the agency is already working to improve the system. Plans are to expand the existing fleet of 669 cars with 775 new ones, beginning in the fall. There are also plans to increase the size of a Hayward maintenance facility to accommodate up to 1,081 cars. A 10-mile eBART extension between Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch and the Pittsburg-Bay BART station is expected to open in 2018. Keller said the opening of the eBART station would be a boon for area residents, who often complain to him that the area has been paying taxes to BART since the 1970s without much to show for it. When asked for the exact amount of taxes paid by Contra Costa County residents since BART’s inception, BART Spokesman Jim Allison said “I’m not aware of any total figure of Contra Costa taxes that’s available.” However, Keller said he thinks local riders will be impressed with the new eBART system. “Once people notice how modern and convenient the system will be, I think they will understand we are getting something
that other areas are not,” he said. “Livermore is still studying an extension, and they have paid BART taxes for (more than) 40 years. Hercules is still studying a rail extension, and they have paid BART taxes for (more than) 40 years. We are ahead of other communities that are in the same boat that we are in. They have paid into the BART system with both property and sales taxes for a long time and have not a lot to show for it.” However, there are some who are displeased with the way the transit agency has been spending its money. Former BART Board Member Arlo Smith points to concerns expressed by state Sen. Steve Glazer, (D)-Orinda, who represents the East Bay area. Glazier has expressed dissatisfaction about the recent $1,000 bonuses given to the transit system’s 3,357 employees amid a need for $9.6 billion in capital improvements. “I think Sen. Glazer has proven there are some serious issues and financial mismanagement with this agency,” Smith said. “Until I see some reforms in the finances of this system, I am going to oppose this measure.” Others believe the measure is vital to BART’s future. “BART is absolutely the most important transit investment in our region,” said Amy Worth, former member of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority. “The reliability is extremely important.” For more information, visit bart.gov/ better-bart. Sewers stitching for girls around the world by Linnea Jessup Correspondent
A simple strand of thread is being woven into to an international organization, inspiring women in the Brentwood and Antioch area to sew dozens of dresses for young girls. Thanks to Dress a Girl Around the World and the enthusiasm of Peggy Wheaton of Brentwood, there is now a growing group of women enthusiastically using new fabrics, bright colors and artistic embellishments to create these dresses for the international program. Dress a Girl Around the World is a campaign under Hope 4 Women International, bringing dignity to women around the world by sewing and sending them dresses. In April, six people from the Brentwood Neighborhood Church, which Wheaton attends, traveled to a refugee camp near Amman, Jordan, where they distributed 80 of the group’s creations to schoolgirls. “We distributed these dresses at a school set up to educate refugees,” said David Mason, associate pastor at the church. “It was a unique privilege to give them to children, many of whom had never had a new dress of their own.” Wheaton first heard about the Dress a Girl program while visiting a friend. As she did some research on the nonprofit, she says she was moved and excited. A realtor and entrepreneur, she quickly got involved

Peggy Wheaton, foreground, shows off the colorful dresses created locally to support the international Dress a Girl Around the World program. with a sewing group in Antioch, the Delta Sowers. She attended their monthly fabric cutting and sewing sessions for a year in Antioch, and in March, she launched a new chapter in Brentwood, with the women she recruited opting for the name Precious Threads. The group, which meets monthly in her home, sets up a day-long workshop on one Saturday a month, where she sets up long tables and women set up their own sewing machines to piece together the garments. Others concentrate on cutting more fabric into kits needed for each dress, inserting them into small plastic bags and distribute them among themselves and
other eager seamstresses, to be assembled at their own homes. In just a few sessions, the group, which numbers about 20 local women, has already completed hundreds of dresses. “We’re also starting to make shorts for boys and sent along a couple dozen for them to the Jordan orphanage, which is the second largest refugee camp there,” said Wheaton.“We’ve had between 10 and 19 ladies (in attendance) each month.” Thanks to financial donations of the project by both the women who sew and other community supporters, the group members are also able to tuck a new pair of underwear into each dress and boys’
trouser pockets. Next, they are preparing a shipment for Haiti, which will be used at a local orphanage. Each piece of clothing gets a specially designed label, bearing the group’s name and location. The group members also pray over the clothing and for their beneficiaries. Not everyone supporting this outreach sews, but are enthusiastic supporters of the international effort. Mary Gabriel, of Discovery Bay, quickly became a dedicated shopper at garage sales and thrift stores, finding sales and bargains at a variety of locations. “I hit the garage sales on Saturday, and everywhere I go, I find what we need,” she said. “Walmart gave us a $50 gift card, too. I really feel that God is blessing us, because everywhere I go, I find what we need.” In fact, as the Brentwood group was forming, they realized they needed a special machine, called a serger, which helps with seam edges. Suddenly, one was found in a friend’s house, unused, and was donated. Others donate sewing items, including patterns and buttons. For her part, Wheaton has dedicated an entire room to the new endeavor, with shelves bursting with a rainbow of fabrics, as well as completed dresses and shorts. The next sewing session has been scheduled for Saturday, July 2. For more information, contact Peggy Wheaton at 925783-5964 or peggywheaton@pacbell.net or visit www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com. Actions or dress?
Editor: Well, both would make for a nice balance. Seems we have a bit of a feud in town over the way Mayor Taylor has dressed on some occasions. We’ve seen him in a white suit, we’ve seen him in an orange suit and we’ve even seen him in a turkey suit, raising money for the hungry at Thanksgiving. The latter is commendable; the others don’t appear to be purpose driven. Nevertheless, he has offended some, particularly at the prestigious Shellie Awards ceremony in Walnut Creek, where Brentwood thespians received a well-deserved award. The mayor’s representation of Brentwood was not considered commendable, mostly due to his attire. Mrs. Gaughan has been vilified in local letters to the editor for expressing her and others’ embarrassment at the mayor’s attire at that event, after seeing the mayor later in a ‘conservative’ business suit for his reelection campaign announcement. So, confusion reigns … do clothes make the man? As one interpretation of a Shakespearean soliloquy goes, “don’t bling yourself out (or be gaudy), and be true to yourself.” I think the mayor could strike a better balance, if not for Brentwoodians, perhaps at least for those on ‘the other side the hill.’ Kermit Sveen Brentwood

allow scooters. It allows BMX bikes and skateboards to ride simultaneously ... but not scooters. My child has gone there multiple times with all the required riding equipment, but has been turned away and forced to ride in the street or whatever parking lot he can find. I cannot get an answer as to why these children are being turned away. Are scooters more dangerous than skateboards or bikes? I would argue that they are the safest of the three. Please shed some light on the subject, and help us get scooters admitted to the local park. These Brentwood children are missing out on an opportunity to interact with local kids who have similar interests and are forced to watch as other kids enjoy themselves in a Brentwood public park. Mayor not an honest politician
Editor: (Mayor Bob Taylor’s) clothes don’t matter, but his dishonesty should matter to every Brentwood citizen. Before the last election, he told the children of Brentwood Elementary that if he were reelected, he would build a park on the vacant land at the corner of Griffith Lane and Balfour Road. He told at least two different classes of children this same lie. As we can see, that land is being
filled up with a whole lot of new houses ... no park. Honesty is the best policy and much more important than clothes. How could anyone even think about re-electing such a liar? Nancy Leonardson Brentwood
Lots of things to ponder
Editor: The May 20 edition of The Press brought up some interesting areas for comment. The transgender bathroom issue seems to be a tempest in a teapot, unless you are one of those North Carolina nutballs. Logic and common sense would seem to indicate that a person would use the bathroom of the gender they identify as. The letter from Greg Miller regarding fire protection brought up all the old lies and misconceptions that keep our firefighters from being adequately paid and our fire stations open. Do your homework people! The problem is with property-tax allocations brought about by the ill-conceived Prop 13. These are the same false arguments that were used to defeat the ballot issue that would have fixed the problem. Renters don’t pay property taxes directly, but you can bet that landlords pass that cost on when establishing rental rates. Once again, a little common sense goes a long ways. The overcrowding in our school classrooms is a disgrace! Our teachers are underpaid and overloaded, while at the same time, we have five school districts, each with an overpaid superintendent and admin staff. Why not consolidate Byron, Brentwood, Liberty, Knightsen and Oakley into one district with one superintendent and one admin staff ? And finally, the biggest problem with government today is the incumbents. From local city government to the U.S. Congress, we are swamped with the same old people. Most of the candidates running for District 3 Supervisor are the same old public-trough feeders looking for a new free ride. Same old faces, same old crap. Bill Sumner Brentwood

HIGH SCHOOLS, RECREATION & SIGN-UPS
Amateurs roll with the senior pros by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
For many of the loyal bowlers of Harvest Park Bowl, last weekend’s appearance at the center for the Professional Bowlers Association’s Northern California Senior Classic Pro-am was anything but routine. As the 104 youth and adult competitors lined up on the lanes, the top senior bowlers in the world joined them, adding an awe-struck dimension to the usual sport of bowling. “This is awesome - freaking awesome,” said Doug Campbell, as he carried a bowling pin adorned with the autographs of legends Pete Weber and Walter Ray Williams, Jr. The pros, normally staunch competitors, were no doubt focused on the Northern California Senior Classic that wrapped up Wednesday, but tournament play took a back seat to friendly conversation interspersed with tips only professionals could provide. Harvest Park regular Cody Herzog, 13, relished in the experience. After taking to the lanes, he walked up and down the facility, watching the elite bowlers play out their games. “It was a very good experience, and allaround, I felt I did amazing,” said Herzog, who was the first-place handicap winner. “They were very talkative and gave me a few pointers.” Not far away, 12-year-old David Bronner also carried around a pin. Midway through the adult portion of the pro-am, his
pin had autographs. He admitted he wasn’t the greatest bowler in the world, but that didn’t prevent him from getting the most out of the event. “I’m not that good at it, but it was a lot of learning,” he said. “They give you a lot of advice.” While most amateur competitors were focused on getting the most out of their time with the pros, it didn’t stop them from showing off their skills. Bowler Patrick Dabatos walked away with a $100 scholarship as the scratch winner, with a 833 total. Herzog, who also won a $100 scholarship as the handicap winner with a 1,754 total, joined him. Youth bowler Shelby Throntveit ended her day with a scratch total of 759, securing a $100 scholarship as the winner of her division. Mia Rose’s handicap total of 1,643 paved the way for her to leave with a $100 scholarship as the handicap winner of the youth female division. Adult bowlers Clark Walmer and Richard Laplante both won $275, after their scratch totals of 876 and 844, combined with their professional partner’s totals of 816 and 842, left both tied with a grand total of 1,692. “This was a great event, and this was just the pro-am,” said Bob Damico, Harvest Park tournament co-director and youth coach. The Northern California Senior Classic wrapped up Wednesday. For complete results of the pro-am, visit www.harvestparkbowl.com. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

Rider accelerates through motocross circuit by Michael Dixon Correspondent
O’Hara Park seventh grader Anthony Belt hasn’t been involved in motocross for a long time, but he has certainly made an impact, receiving an American Motorcyclist Association plaque for the winter series, placing second overall and recording two wins. According to Belt’s family, his quick success stems from a lot of hard work and interest in the sport. Additionally, motocross has helped Anthony in other areas of life. “He has a year in training as of last April,” said Anthony’s father, Scott. “He trains four or five days per week and is very dedicated and hardworking. There are no rider’s stats that he doesn’t know. It’s also helped his grades. He knows that he needs to keep them up if he wants to do it, and now he’s getting A’s and B’s.” Anthony began with motocross riding trails. A group of schoolmates who raced on tracks got him into that form of racing, which is where he still participates. Now that school is out, Anthony can shift all of his focus to motocross, which is what he plans on doing. Over the summer, he plans to work a lot with trainer Terry Bostard, focusing on how to make himself better

in the sport with the goal of competing against better and potentially elite racers. “After I’m done training hard, maybe (I will) try to make it to Loretta’s,” Anthony said, referring to the Loretta Lynn Amateur Motocross championship, a prestigious amateur event in Tennessee. While that goal is lofty, Anthony’s performances so far
against far more experienced racers make the goal seem at least plausible. “He’s going up against kids that have been riding for five, six, seven and eight years,” Scott said. “He’s only been doing it two. He’s not quite even with them, but he’s up there.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

Wildkatz kickoff season The West Coast Wildkatz of the West Coast Soccer Club and Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) will soon play their first games in Mountain House, Tracy and Brentwood. Liberty High School’s Devyn Gilfoy, Delanie Sheehan, Robyn McCarthy and Lauren Sisneros will make their WPSL debut this year with the league franchise WildKatz. Gilfoy, Sisneros, Sheehan and McCarthy all joined the West Coast Soccer youth system in 2014 and rapidly developed into top-flight players, all of whom contributed to the West Coast Wild team earning four straight state titles and back-to-back national championships. All four soon earned athletic soccer scholarships to attend colleges on the West Coast. Sheehan will be going to the UCLA, Sisneros to UNLV, McCarthy to Fresno State and Gilfoy to Pepperdine University. “I cannot wait to get started and continue my development under coach Troy Dayak,” said Gilfoy, who grew up playing in the Brentwood Youth Soccer League with Sisneros, McCarthy and Sheehan, before joining West Coast in 2014. “We have had such great success as a youth team and I’m excited to meet the challenge of the WPSL.” McCarthy added, “Playing with West Coast Wild gave me the expo-

I’m super excited to be able to continue my soccer career and play in the WPSL right here close to home.” Head coach Troy Dayak is equally as excited. “It’s always great to have local players as the core of the team, especially (those) who are homegrown and go through our youth system,” he said. “I’m excited to add these four young ladies to an outstanding roster for the summer and look forward to putting an exciting brand of soccer out on the
fields for our fans.” This will be the Wildkatz fifth season in the WPSL, which was formed in 1998 and is now the highest level of women’s amateur soccer in North America. Dayak, a former professional, Olympic and national team player, founded the West Coast Soccer Club in 2011. The club is committed to developing players to the highest level possible. Want to Save Money? Consider a Revocable Living Trust by Joan Grimes, Esq.

OAKLEY PRESS
OAKLEY
A Revocable Living Trust (“RLT”) is a legal document created during your lifetime that allows you to leave your real and personal property to beneficiaries of your choice. An RLT is very much like a Will with one BIG exception: there is no Probate with an RLT. This means that your RLT and the property in it will not be made public or subject to court supervision. Given the high cost of probate proceedings in California, which can easily be 4-6% of the fair market value of the assets irrespective of the debt against the assets, this is reason enough - especially if you own any real property. In most cases, the cost of transfer of title with an RLT is few hundred dollars. Also, there is a minimal time delay incurred in transferring assets to beneficiaries with an RLT because no court approval is required. In a probate, it can take years to transfer title. RLTs are called “living” because they are created while you are alive and your property is legally transferred to the trust when you create it. RLTs are “revocable” because you may, at any time prior to your death, revoke or change them. In fact, as there are changes in your life including marriage, divorce, the death of a beneficiary, or a change in financial or property situation, you should have the RLT reviewed by an attorney in order to ensure the changes are properly reflected in the Trust. While you are alive, you still own all of the property that has been transferred to your RLT. You can still sell the property in the trust, borrow against it, spend it or give it away. Assets in an RLT are treated much the same as direct ownership of property for income tax purposes. There are no additional taxes, tax returns or any necessity for
separate tax payer identification. Sometimes people say they are not concerned about probate fees because they are not going to be around. However, an RLT can be very important to you when you are alive because if you become incompetent due an accident or illness there can be an easy transfer of management of your property and affairs without the necessity of a court appointed conservator. Sometimes people are worried that RLT will cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to set up and maintain. For most people, an Estate Plan, including an RLT and all of the ancillary documents including a Power of Attorney and Healthcare Directive, should not cost more than $2,000-$2,500. Most attorneys allow people to make payments over time for the work. If you have separate property from a prior marriage or business interests that need to be included, it may be more, but then it is even more important that you properly plan for distribution of your assets in accordance with your wishes and without the prying eyes of the public and court system. If you have real property in the state of California or elsewhere, you should carefully consider how you are currently holding title to the property and whether an RLT may be a better idea for you. I see people every day for a FREE 30 minute consultation in Walnut Creek and Brentwood. This article provides only general legal information, and not specific legal advice. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off
may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. PG&E from page 1A check. The town then made plans for this unexpected revenue, including repairing the pickleball courts at Cornell Park, but the money has still not shown up. Dina Breitstein, finance manager for the Town of Discovery Bay, said the process has been less than simple. “The district has not collected any monies from PG&E,” Breitstein said. “When we reached out to PG&E, their representative asked us to invoice them in four separate invoices. The district did as instructed and invoiced them on May 19 with four invoices per their request two for $5,000 each and two for $6,000 each, for a total of $22,000.” This total is what was promised to the town in the form of a $5,000 grant to the community center and $17,000 to the town for new playground equipment at the Roberta Fuss tot lot on Newport
Old River from page 1A “Knightsen School District has been an outstanding school district for decades, and we will continue to offer the excellent programs that we have always provided for students.” Many of the students who will attend Old River attended Knightsen last year. Estrada explained that the Knightsen campus had become crowded, and staff looks forward to splitting students between the two campuses. She has been busy this spring, getting the school in shape for the new school year. Most exciting of all is the new, 9,000-square-foot, multi-purpose building, which features basketball and volleyball courts, a kitchen and an outdoor stage area for the performing arts. “With the addition of the new multiuse room the campus will be a full-service campus to (all our) students next year,” Estrada said. “The district is looking forward to continued growth and continued educational excellence on both campuses.” Parents in the district, especially in the new developments in The Lakes neighborhood, are enthusiastic about having

Tamar Sarkissian, a spokesperson for PG&E, says the money is indeed on its way. “The funding is approved; we are currently processing it,” Sarkissian said. “We expect to deliver the checks (to the town and the Byron Union School District) sometime in August.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net.
a new school so close to home. Brittany Deacon, a life-long resident of Discovery Bay, looks forward to sending her son to kindergarten at Old River. “Knightsen has always been a great school, and there’s been a lot of growth and a lot of parents are excited,” said Deacon, the newly elected parliamentarian for the school’s Parent Teacher Club (PTC). “The test scores have always been great, and so have the student to teacher ratios, which Mr. Witte has been big on.” The club, while brand new, is full of excitement. The five officers have received plenty of support from the district and the Knightsen PTC. “We don’t have much in the works yet, as far as fundraising, but we are setting up the calendar now,” Deacon said. “A big goal for us is that we want to utilize what the community has, the local businesses, like Callahan’s Ice Cream and UnWined. We are going to support and target local business in our fundraisers. This is a great community, and everyone knows everyone else. Just knowing that my son can grow up here and go to a good school makes me feel so great.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

country club, framed by meticulously groomed gardens and greens, with views of Mount Diablo, extravagant sunsets or twinkling, starry night skies. If your dream wedding is indoors, picture yourself walking through a Mediterranean-style clubhouse, where sunlight falls through skylights onto tall, white, marble columns and an atriumstyle lobby. Best of all, you don’t have to belong to a country club to make either of these luxurious weddings a reality. Discovery Bay Golf & Country Club is one of Contra Costa County’s most elegant and picturesque destinations for saying “I do,” offering exceptional service, delicious food, affordable prices and wonderful ambiance that transforms any vision into a dream wedding. The country club, known for its broad lawns, gorgeous lakes, colorful flowers and grand willow, poplar and ash trees, is available for rental to both members and nonmembers. Indoor and outdoor sites make the perfect spots for wedding ceremonies and receptions. “Our grounds and clubhouse are beautiful, providing so many stunning, photographic locations,” said Jenelle Tissot, the club’s food and beverage manager and event coordinator. “Having a wedding here is an intimate and unique experience, because we do not overbook our location to ensure we can give each guest special attention and an experience ON THE COVER: The Discovery Bay Golf & Country Club offers a dramatic, romantic backdrop for weddings of all sizes, tastes and budgets.

In addition to the on-site wedding coordinator, who helps plan the perfect event, brides and grooms work with culinary staff to plan a sit down or buffet-dinner package. “Our wedding was everything and more,” said bride Samantha Aranda. “The chef was spectacular, and all of my guests complimented the food. There was a huge selection of salads, pastas and pota-
toes, and the chicken cordon bleu was spectacular. I could not have asked for our wedding day to go any more perfectly.” Besides delicious food, Discovery Bay Golf & Country Club gives wedding parties extra time to set up. Since the club hosts only one event per day, wedding parties have unlimited access to the venue the entire day of the wedding, prior to the event start time. Other amenities include silver and all basic linens (one tablecloth and napkin color choice), tables and chairs, a wedding food tasting with the booking, a bridal suite, dance floor and optional valet parking.
“In all of our research, we have never met a more dedicated or professional event coordinator,” said groom and Brentwood resident Alex Tuveson. “I would recommend Discovery Bay Golf & Country Club to anyone who is looking for a wedding venue. We can’t thank them enough for making our wedding something that we will cherish and remember for the rest of our lives.” Discovery Bay Golf & Country Club is located at 1475 Clubhouse Dr., in Discovery Bay. Donate, recycle, reuse for a greener wedding
S
ometimes, a wedding can be a testament to excess. In order to make an impression and please every guest, couples often go above
and beyond with regard to food, favors, flowers and much more at their weddings. At the end of the night, couples might be left with a good deal of food and other items that go to waste. That is, unless they donate the excess to someone who can use it. Leftover wedding food, flowers and wardrobes can be donated and make a difference in other people’s lives. By asking a few questions and doing a little legwork, you can turn items that would be discarded into something that goes on to help another person. Food - Food is one area of the wedding that’s often prepared in abundance, particularly for buffetstyle weddings. In order to keep chafing dishes filled and inviting, catering halls or restaurants often prepare much more food than is necessary. At the end of the night, there are usually plenty of leftovers. Some caterers may contract with food-recovery groups to take leftover food and bring it to the needy. You can ask your caterer if they do so. If not, do an online search for a food-recovery organization and find out how you can donate the remainders of your wedding feast. Clothing - Bridesmaid dresses and formal wear are seldom worn again, unless you are a person who has mastered the art of turning pink taffeta into a new
ensemble. However, you may be able to donate a dress or suit to a consignment store or thrift shop, where it can be purchased and worn by someone who may not be able to afford an off-the-rack item. You can also consider donating it to an organization that provides clothing to the underprivileged. Some people offer wedding clothing for sale at deep discounts through newspaper classifieds or online, where it can also live on in someone else’s closet. Floral arrangements - Wedding centerpieces can last for several days before they wilt. While friends and family members may take some home, several centerpieces will likely be left at the end of the night. Think about bringing them to a hospital, hospice center or nursing home. The flowers can help brighten the day of others who are in somber settings. If you cannot find a place that will take them, consider dropping one or two of them off at the home of an elderly relative who might be confined to their home. Favors - Provided your favors have not been engraved with a date or names, you may be able to return extras to the store. There’s also the possibility of making them available to a couple planning their wedding and looking to cut costs wherever possible. Or, take the favors home and send one out to any person who gives you a gift or a card, but wasn’t able to make it to the wedding. Weddings do not have to be wasteful. If you put your mind to it, you can find ways to reuse items featured on your big day. – Courtesy Metro Creative

A guide to engagement ring shopping
L
ong before many couples stand in front of an officiant and say, “I do,” they make another pledge to each other by getting engaged and
agreeing to begin a new life together. In a 2011 survey by from XO Group, Inc., formerly The Knot Inc., the average engagement ring costs Americans $5,200. Considering engagement rings are typically once-in-alifetime purchases, many men say the high cost is warranted and are even willing to finance the purchase or push their budgets to procure a beautiful ring. Many engagement rings feature a 1-carat center stone with some smaller stones surrounding it, accounting for a 1.4 total carat weight on average. Considering a ring is such a significant investment, it pays to have some knowledge in gem selection. Start by answering a few questions Having an idea of what you want can help anyone get a better deal, whether one is shopping for a new sofa or an engagement ring. An informed shopper can avoid being taken advantage of or buying something that really isn’t worth the asking price. The four Cs are a good place for shoppers to get started. Various attributes affect the value, quality and beauty of a diamond. The four Cs stand for cut, color, clarity and carat weight. The cut refers to the shape of the stone, as well as the skill involved in achieving the shape of the facets so that it reflects the light brilliantly. The grading color in a diamond determines how closely a diamond’s color approaches colorlessness. The diamond will be assigned a letter grade. The higher the letter in the alphabet, the clearer the stone. Clarity refers to the amount,
size, type and location of internal flaws in a diamond, also known as inclusions. The cost of the diamond increases when there are fewer inclusions in the stone. Finally, the carat weight is the size and weight of the stone. The larger the stone, the pricier it can be. Another question to ask is which style of ring? Your fianceeto-be may have a certain setting style and diamond shape preference. It pays to know these things, including the type of setting the stone will be encased in. You should also know whether they would be happy with a larger stone that may have some invisible imperfections or a smaller, flawless stone. Know your budget Many expenses are associated with planning a wedding, and some couples may not want to begin their lives together in debt. This may need to be factored in to the decision-making process. You should go to jewelry stores to price out different styles and see how diamonds compare. This way you will have an accurate idea of just how much rings cost. Carefully consider your options. Having an intimate knowledge of what your significant other will want can help you to narrow down something that is reasonable.
|
5B
It also pays to understand a jeweler’s return policy. Even if you may know what you want, in the event that the ring doesn’t work out, find out if the style can be changed or if you can get a refund or make an exchange. Other tips for savings success There are ways to maximize your budget and still end up with a beautiful stone. ♦♦ Ask for a stone that is slightly less than the next carat, for example 0.9 instead of one carat. Experts say the price difference between a 1.9 carat diamond and a 2 carat diamond can be as much as $5,000. Also, choose a stone that has more surface area, which will make it appear larger, even if it does not have as much sparkle. ♦♦ If the look of platinum is desired, realize white gold, silver or tungsten are more affordable options that will still give off that silvery hue. Mixed gold colors, including white, pink and yellow, can be unique. ♦♦ Try to buy a loose diamond. You can inspect the entire stone and then shop around for an acceptable setting. This can save you money in the long run by buying the ring elements separately. ♦♦ Don’t shy away from a warehouse store for a good deal on rings. As long as the diamond is to your liking and follows the requirements of the four Cs you desire, it should not matter where the ring was purchased. ♦♦ Make sure the store is accredited by the Jewelers of America or is a member of the Gemological Institute of America. This way you know you are buying from a reputable source and the diamonds were acquired ethically. ♦♦ Negotiate the price. Comparison shop and find out if another jeweler will match a competitor’s offer. – Courtesy Metro Creative

Candy displays raising the bar on wedding treats ANNA HURT
W
hen planning a wedding, there are always a million details
to attend to - the guest list, venue, seating, décor, food, cake and favors - but with the newest trend entering the wedding circuit, you can take care of many of these details all at once. Having a candy bar is a colorful, tasty way to brighten up your wedding or special event. With the big, decorative apothecary jars and endless color and display options, it can add fun to any theme. Plus, it can take the place of favors - guests can simply take a personalized container of their favorite candies home with them at the end of the event. There’s no need to go far to find this service, either. Le Candy Bar Occasions, located in Brentwood, is available for any special event. Desiree Ramos and her daughter, Vanessa Wheeler, founded the business in April, after Wheeler realized there were no businesses in the area providing candy-bar services.

Le Candy Bar Occasions is a fun, trendy and tasty way to brighten up your wedding or special event. Ramos runs the business side of the company, focusing on their online and community presence and collecting contacts. Wheeler, who attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco, directs
the creative side. “(Vanessa is) very creative; she just loves decorating,” said Ramos. The candy bar works like a catering service – Ramos and Wheeler bring all
of the treats to the event and create a beautiful display. If there are additional items needed such as tables or other equipment, they will provide that too. “It takes away the responsibility of set up,” said Ramos. Displays can also be incorporated with other elements of the wedding, such as the cake. Ramos has recently begun collaborating with the popular Brentwood business, TLCakes, delivering all the wedding treats together on one table. While the candy-bar trend has largely been seen at weddings, Ramos wants potential customers to know that the possibilities are endless. She lists birthdays, retirements, Halloween, corporate events, Mardi Gras, quinceañeras and bachelor and bachelorette parties as possible places to have a candy bar. “Let us sweeten up your occasion,” she said. For more information, visit the business’ booth at the Brentwood farmers market each Saturday, call 925-4571851, email lecandybaroccasions@ gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/ lecandybarforalloccasions. Stop the ‘what if’s’ with special-event insurance
E
AMY SCHRADER very bride has what-if jitters before her big day. What if hurricane-force winds destroy the
outdoor tent? What if the flowers arrive wilted or dead? What if the food goes bad and everyone gets food poisoning? What if the best man loses the rings? What many people don’t realize is that insuring your wedding day with special-event insurance can stop what-if jitters and give new brides and grooms peace of mind. Just like buying insurance for expensive trips, cars or concert events, new brides and grooms can protect themselves from financial disaster on their big day. “It never hurts to have the extra insurance,” said George Stewart, agent broker with East County Insurance Agency, Inc. “It covers your liability if a guest is injured or causes property damage, as well as unexpected mishaps that can cause brides and grooms to lose money.” The agency, which was started by Stewart’s father-in-law, John Slatten, is a family
business with more than 55 years of experience in Contra Costa County. Today, they have two locations, in Antioch and Brentwood, which Stewart and his wife, Emily Slatten, operate. The two locations enable them to serve a majority of the county. Stewart recommends all prospective brides and grooms invest in wedding insurance. “It’s a small price to pay for added security and peace of mind,” he said, adding that special-event insurance costs less than $200. According to Stewart, the most important component of special-event insurance to buy for your big day is personal-liability insurance. Just as you could be financially responsible if someone slips in your home and becomes injured, you could be held financially responsible if someone gets injured at your event or damages the property of the venue. Many venues even require liability insurance. Additional types of insurance available cover extreme weather, vendor protection, gift coverage for theft of non-monetary gifts, wedding attire coverage, wedding ring coverage and cancellation coverage that insures your deposits, cake, flowers and more, or if you have to cancel or postpone your event see Insurance page 9B

Wedding dress silhouettes as much as a bride-to-be’s choice of wedding gown.
Finding the perfect gown that flatters her figure while stunning her guests and soon-to-be husband is a labor of love for many brides. The Bridal Association of America estimates brides spend between $1,500 and $2,000 total on their gowns, veils and accessories. Finding the right gown means having an understanding of what silhouettes are available and what flatters certain body types. Here is a look of some of the common types of gown silhouettes and why choosing this shape might be right for you. Ball gown A ball gown dress is truly a classic style, evoking images of fairy-tale princesses. With a fitted bodice and full skirt that flairs at the waist, this silhouette is usually good for all body types. Because the full skirt, which is typically poofedup by crinoline, will hide the hips and thighs, women with a pear shape might gravitate toward this style. The ball-gown style may not be ideal for petite women, as the skirt may overwhelm their figures. A-line Another silhouette very forgiving or appropriate for many body types is the A-line gown. A-line cut dresses are the go-to style for anyone looking to minimize perceived flaws. The cut of the dress will fit to the waist and gradually fan out from the hips, forming the outline of an uppercase “A.” When in doubt, A-line gowns are classic and sensible and a favorite among brides. Trumpet Women who prefer something a little more form fitting might select a trumpet silhouette. This dress is fitted
through the body, then the gown flares out at mid-thigh level. Women with taught stomachs and hourglass figures can benefit from this style gown, but those who do not want anything tight in the hips and thighs will want to select something else. Mermaid A bit more fitted than the trumpet, this silhouette is close to the body from the chest down to the knee. The skirt then flares out slightly by the knee. Tall, thin women generally look best in this type of gown. Modified A-line A balance between a traditional A-line and a more fitted gown, the modified A-line does not flare out as much, but does flare out enough from the waist to hide areas around the hips and thighs. This is another good choice for a wide array of figures. Tea length Brides who do not want a gown that reaches the floor can opt for a tea-length dress, on which the skirt generally falls between the ankle and the knee. Sheath Lean brides who want simplicity in their gowns can opt for a sheath silhouette. The narrow shape of the gown from the neckline to the hem will definitely accentuate the body shape. Therefore, women who are shy may want to select a different option. Petite women who may be overwhelmed by more fabric can usually wear a sheath gown with success. Although a bride may have a wedding gown style in mind, it is a good idea to try on a number of different silhouettes to find the one that is most flattering. Bridal salon employees are usually well versed in matching body types to a gown and can prove invaluable when selecting a dress. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

ccording to The Knot’s 2015 Real Weddings Study, the average wedding cost, exclud-
ing honeymoon costs, in the U.S. in 2015 was $32,641, an increase of more than $1,400 from the year prior. The study found that couples looking to tie the knot in New York City’s Manhattan borough can expect to pay well above the national average. Manhattan weddings cost couples an average of $82,299 in 2015. That’s over $20,000 more than in Chicago, the next most expensive city to tie the knot in 2015. Couples who want a more affordable place to get married than the Big Apple may want to look into saying “I do” in central Illinois, where the average wedding cost was $21,818, more than $10,000 below the national average. Insurance from page 7B due to unforeseen circumstances. “The cost was small in the grand scheme of what we were paying for our wedding,” said Oakley resident Megan Burgoon, who opted to purchase special-event insurance for her wedding. “It was a small price to pay for not having to worry, and I immediately liked the idea, because

cited as the reason behind wedding dresses being white, a 2014 exhibit at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London indicated that white wedding dresses were a symbol of wealth and had little, if anything, to do with virginity. The exhibit, titled “Wedding Dresses 1775-2014,” noted that, during the 18th and 19th centuries, white wedding dresses indicated a family could afford to buy a dress the bride would wear only once. During that time, white dresses were especially difficult to clean, and that made it impractical for any but the wealthy to purchase dresses that would likely never be worn a second time. England’s Queen Victoria, who married Albert of Saxe-Coburg in 1840, is widely credited with popularizing the white wedding dress. White dresses remain a traditional and popular choice today, though many brides opt for various shades of white, if not an entirely different color. – Courtesy of Metro Creative
