Charges filed against director by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has charged CSD Vice President Brian Dawson with two counts of misdemeanor spousal battery and child endangerment. Dawson was arrested on Aug. 27 on suspicion of spousal abuse at his home in Discovery Bay after officers responded to a call about a disturbance. Dawson’s wife sustained injuries in the incident but did not require hospitalization. He was released the next day on $20,000 bond. On Wednesday, Dawson said he was unaware that the charges had been filed: “I don’t

know anything, I haven’t been officially notified. All I can say is that my family and I are taking things one day at a time.” If found guilty, Dawson could face up to one year in county jail and a $1,000 fine for each misdemeanor count. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 31. Dawson, who said he has a history of bipolar disorder, has previously stated that he would not resign his seat on the town governing board despite calls from fellow directors to step down. Sometimes the most ordinary days turn out to be the most extraordinary. Such was the case for Samantha Sunburst and Fredrick Reed, Oakley residents whose heroic actions turned a regular day into an unforgettable experience. Last May as Sunburst and Reed were walking along the stretch of road between Main Street and Rose Avenue in Oakley, the pair watched in horror as a driver lost control of her car, jumped the sidewalk and careened over the cement wall into the canal below. “I just looked at Samantha and said, ‘Did you see that?’” said Reed, who hadn’t met Sunburst prior to the accident. “She nodded and was already on the phone calling 911.”

pulling everyone out of the car and dragging them up the hill,” said Reed. “I don’t think we really thought about it,” said Sunburst. “We just did it.” Inside the car – which was rapidly filling with water – was an elderly woman and her two school-age grandchildren. By the time Reed, Sunburst and the others got to the vehicle, the passengers were crying and screaming for help. “The kids were holding their heads up as high as they could trying to get enough air, and everyone was crying,” said Reed. “We just grabbed them one at a time and got them out of there.” Soon afterward, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection see Heroes page 15A

Child safety-seat check The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District recently implemented a Child Passenger Safety Program in cooperation with Contra Costa County Professional Firefighters Local 1230. The program gives parents and caregivers the confidence to properly install their child’s safety seat on their own. To that end, the fire district employs seven nationally certified child passenger

safety technicians who educate parents and caregivers about child passenger safety seats. Inspections take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the seat and if errors are found. Vandalism case reward NextEra Energy Resources is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in a felony vandalism case. On Aug. 27, the Office of the Sheriff was notified about the vandalism, which occurred in a remote area in Contra Costa County near Vasco Road, about seven miles south of Camino Diablo, where NextEra’s Vasco wind turbine construction project is currently taking place. It is believed the vandalism occurred between 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 and 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. The site manager said an unknown person

moved an excavator next to some underground pipelines on the property and dug some holes. An oil pipeline was ruptured. The energy company that owns the pipeline noticed the pressure loss and shut down the pipeline. It is unknown how much oil was released before the shutdown. The estimated cost of the damage, oil and cleanup is between $50,000 and $100,000. Those with information on the case should call the Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division at 925-313-2647. n Aug. 19, U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Scott Portue, a 2004 Liberty High School graduate and mechanical engineering graduate of Colorado State University, finished his undergraduate pilot training at the 25th Flying Training Squadron at Vance AFB in Enid, Okla. Scott’s wings were pinned on by his grandfather, Mel Portue. Scott received all three available awards: Distinguished Graduate for fighters, AETC Flying Training award for fighters, and the overall Commander’s Trophy. Scott has been assigned to fly the F-16 Viper/Fighting Falcon and will be based at Luke AFB in Phoenix, Ariz. As a recipient of the Commander’s Trophy, Scott gained acceptance into the prestigious Order of the Daedalians, an organization that began in November of 1918 in World War I and was comprised of the first pilots to fly in our military in a time of war. he Byron Delta Lions Club recently held its annual baby shower at Delta Presbyterian Church in Discovery Bay. The event beneﬁted birth mothers in need at the Contra Costa Medical Center in Martinez. Members brought layette clothing and blankets, and enjoyed games, food and cake. The Byron Delta Lions are among the center’s largest contributors, donating more than 3,000 items over the past 10 years. Upon arrival, the donations are packaged by the auxiliary and presented to the new birth moms. Byron Delta Lions will continue contributing these gifts of love every September.

On October 3, 1921, a group of professional women in Oakland founded this country’s first women’s service organization: Soroptimist International. The name derives from the Latin soro (woman) and optima (best). This group pioneered an organization that today numbers 95,000 members in 124 countries. The Soroptimist mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The

Volunteers, dog adopters needed Delta Animals Safe Haven (DASH) is holding dog adoptions Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. at Petsmart in the Slatten Ranch Shopping Center, 5879 Lone Tree Way in Antioch. DASH dogs are taken exclusively from the Antioch Animal Shelter and are spayed or neutered, up-todate on immunizations, and micro chipped. The adoption fee is $200, regardless if the dog is pure bred or a mutt. DASH has placed its first dog, Molly, with a wonderful family whose children love her, take her for walks and play with her in a local park. Homecoming for all Homecoming will be even more community oriented than usual at Freedom High School this year. Students plan to host a carnival in the school parking before the big game against College Park on Friday, Sept. 30. “Homecoming is a huge event because not only does the school take part in it but so does the community,” said Freedom Leadership student Nikki Legaspi. “Homecoming is when we recognize the members of our community by holding a parade that leads to the football game. This year we’ve added a carnival so that the community can really get involved with Homecoming.” The community is invited to the Homecoming Rally on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. Each class will perform skits, and members of the Homecoming Court will try to win over the crowd before the king and queen are crowned. Homecoming festivities resume

Friday with the parade, which will include performances from local cheer and dance groups, at 5 p.m. at Diamond Hills Sports Club, 151 Neroly Road. Proceeding east on Neroly and finishing at the high school, the parade will feature class floats designed by the students. This year’s theme is superheroes. The freshman will be the X-Men; the sophomores, the Incredibles; juniors will become members of the Justice League, and seniors will play the role of the Avengers. During the carnival following the parade, guests will get to meet the homecoming court and participate in a variety of activities hosted by Freedom student organizations. Students stoked about self-defense by Amy Claire Correspondent

As concern about childhood obesity increases, the Oakley Unified Elementary School District is taking steps to ensure that the students in its Extended Day Learning Center (EDLC) program stay both safe and in shape. Local martial arts school owner and 5th Degree Black Belt Tom Bright has been teaching afterschool programs to these students, instructing them in self-defense and in the history of martial arts. Every week throughout September, Bright spends half an hour at each of the OUESD elementary schools. The K5 students learn basic rolls and falls and simple karate techniques such as strikes and kicks. Bright also teaches them selfdefense strategies, such as how to escape from a wrist grab. The lessons are interactive – and the children are excited. “They all have a hundred questions,” said Bright. “I’m really pleased to be able to work in the schools.” Bright and his wife Jennifer, a 2nd Degree Black Belt, opened Oakley American Karate in 2002, dedicating their full time and effort to teaching self-defense. Their curriculum emphasizes goal setting and mental growth as well as physical health. “I think martial arts really can benefit all aspects of a person’s life, whether it be a kid or adult,” said Tom. “It’s not just

who organizes enrichment activities such as science and art lessons, was partial to karate because it teaches focus and serves as first-rate exercise. She seconded the students’ enthusiasm about Tom. “He’s an incredible teacher,” she said. “The kids are just in awe over him.” Tom will also teach an eight-week

program to middle schoolers in the district’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. For one hour after school on Fridays, GATE students will learn the application and academic side of martial arts. “In addition to learning self-defense skills, they’ll be looking at the historical development of martial arts,” said Tom. He also intends to cover subjects such as geography and the differences in martial arts from various areas of the world. The GATE students will focus on Escrima, a martial art from the Philippines, and will learn a basic drill called Hubad, which “develops timing and coordination while developing basic self-defense skills.” Teaching is not new to Tom. After earning his college degree in education and entering the workforce, he decided to pursue his lifelong interest in martial arts and took karate lessons. He earned his black belt in 1993 and continued to hone his skills. He spent several years working in a sales environment until he finally decided that there was a better way to live. Eagle sandwich PRINCIPAL REDUCTIONS? If you are upside-down on your home and are having trouble making the payments, I have some good news for you. If you’ve been renting for years, or you own a home, but you made a conscious decision to buy a smaller, less expensive home years ago because you saw the “bubble” forming, then you will think what I am about to report is entirely unfair. I’m only reporting the facts, here, not saying whether or not it’s “right.” I’ve been reviewing loan modification offers with local homeowners now for quite a few years at no charge. I do it just to help them try to figure out exactly WHAT they are being offered, and if it makes sense to them to accept it, or hold out for a better deal. [If you’d like me to review yours, feel free to contact me.] Over the past few years, I would rarely see principal reductions offered. In fact, most of the loan mods weren’t very good at all. Usually just temporary band-aids of temporary lower rates. However, over the past 3-4 months I’m seeing much better loan mods being offered. And here is the big shift: I’m seeing more and more

principal reductions being offered, and some of them are substantial! Some as high as $175K off the balance. What’s interesting about these is that they are almost all staggered over 3 years. So they don’t take it all off at once, they’ll take off 1/3 each year, as long as your account is in good standing. But they stop charging you interest on the amount of principal reduction right away. So if you take the loan mod, and make your payments for 3 years on time, it’s the same result to you as if they had dropped the principal right away. But for your lender, they get to stretch out the accounting loss on their books over 3 years. Pretty creative, and it’s making a big difference for a lot of people. Most of the time they are still upside-down after the reduction, but now only by $25-75K, not $250K, and that’s usually something they can live with.

Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California with thousands of other “Okies” seeking jobs, land, dignity and a future. The play is based on mature themes and parental guidance is suggested. Deer Valley science going suborbital by Samie Hartley Staff Writer NASA concluded its 30-year space shuttle program in July, but that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep Deer Valley High School science teacher Jeff Adkins from dreaming about venturing into space. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earthbound for now, but Adkinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; work will reach for the stars in 2012 at an experimental rocket launch sponsored by Masten Space Systems. Masten is currently testing reusable suborbital rockets that can be sent into space, returned to Earth and sent into space again. Once the technology is perfected, Masten would like to send teachers into space via Teachers in Space, an organization that aspires to take teachers into space and return them to Earth to share their experiences with students. Masten is still testing its technology, but it has room on its test rockets to transport technological devices briefly into space to record data that can be analyzed in the classroom. Adkins, who has been teaching science at Deer Valley for 13 years, submitted an application and was invited to conduct an experiment during a flight next year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Masten is sponsoring education activities while it tests its reusable rockets, and right now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m building a radiation tracker that will be placed in the nose of the rocket,â&#x20AC;? said Adkins. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basically a little computer thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programmed to record times of radiation detection and the measurement of the radiation. There is a memory card in the probe, just like a memory card in a digital camera, that will record all the information during the flight. When the rocket returns, my students and I will be able to examine the data.â&#x20AC;? Adkins first heard about the Teachers in Space program in the 1980s. He was too young to apply but remained in contact with the organization. Teachers in Space was launched by NASA, but now that privately owned rockets have proven capable of sending humans into space, teachers interested in exploring space still have a chance to boldly go where few teachers have gone before. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the dream that one day students will be able to access space in the classroom as easily as they access microscopes today,â&#x20AC;? Adkins said. While Adkins is overseeing this first project, which is expected to launch before school breaks for summer, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assembling a team of students interested in building a similar radiation probe that could be used as a second tracker or a backup should the first device fail. For the first experiment, the radiation probe built by Adkins will soar a minimum of 5 kilometers, equivalent to 3 miles or approximately 15,800 feet. The rocket is expected to be airborne for only a matter of minutes before returning to its launch site. Although the rocket wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave the atmosphere, Adkins said a great deal of information can still be gathered at an altitude of 3 miles. Following the probeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s return to Earth, Masten will send the probe back to Adkins for analysis. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unsure of what results will be garnered by the test, but either way, the information will be valuable. The metal

used in the rocketâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cone could impair the collection of radiation data, which is just as important a finding as pages of radiation measurements, said Adkins. What Adkins likes most about this opportunity is that he gets to share his work with his students and join forces with them on a follow-up project based on the first data collection. The collaboration is similar to a college-level academic partnership shared between students and professors, and Adkins is looking forward to working with students who are equally intrigued by the subjects of space, rocketry and technology. deau, who was named Teacher of the Year at a banquet last week. “Since being named Laurel Teacher of the Year, I told myself that anything beyond that would be icing on the cake. This is an amazing honor. I never thought I’d be Teacher of the Year for the district – let alone the county – so this is really special.” Bordeau, who teaches third grade, has marked Sept. 15 on her calendar as one of her favorite days. Not only was she named County Teacher of the Year last Thursday; the day also marked the one-year anniversary of her final chemo treatment. “It’s amazing where a year can take you,” she said. “It’s hard to believe that a year ago, I was sitting in the chair getting my last chemo treatment, and then this year, I’m on stage being honored as Teacher of the Year for the county. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I told myself I wouldn’t let the disease and the treatments get me down. I feel so lucky to be here.” Oakley Union School District Superintendent Rick Rogers said he’s proud of Bordeau; her title is symbolic of all the outstanding teaching that takes place in the district. Laurel Principal Mimi Curran, who’s also proud of Bordeau, said she wasn’t surprised by the announcement. Bordeau has been a teacher at Laurel since the school opened in 1992, and both of Curran’s children were in her

class. Curran knows firsthand that Bordeau is an inspiring teacher. “Debbie has a gift,” Curran said. “Teaching comes naturally to her. She has a way of reaching out to children and finding ways to get each and every student to learn. She takes the time to create the best learning environment for her students. She’s an amazing teacher.” Bordeau, 51, knew early on that she wanted to be a teacher. In middle school she was inspired by her English teacher, who exhibited an intense passion for learning as well as teaching. The teacher’s style and energy motivated Bordeau to pursue a career in education, and in college she realized elementary school was her niche. She taught in her native New Hampshire for five years before moving to Brentwood in 1990. Despite her new title, Bordeau remains modest about the accolade. She prefers to think of herself as the representative for her county and would rather share the spotlight with her colleagues than keep the limelight to herself. “This honor is such a nice compliment, but I work with a group of fantastic teachers at Laurel, and I believe that any one of us could have been picked as Teacher of the Year,” Bordeau said. “There is such a sense of community here. Mariposa Energy Project breaks ground Diamond Generating Corporation recently broke ground on its $250 million gas-fired, 200-megawatt Mariposa Energy Project located near Byron and Tracy in the northeast corner of Alameda County. The project is expected to create 177 construction jobs (and an additional 229 jobs indirectly) and involve a $16.3 million payroll. Local spending from the project during construction is estimated to be $12 million. The project will provide an estimated $10 million in sales tax during construction and an estimated $2.5 million in annual property taxes once operational by the summer of 2012. “We at Diamond are pleased to be able to provide jobs, tax revenues, community benefits packages and local spending within the state,” said Diamond President Yasuyuki Asakura. “In these tough economic times, it’s so important to provide skilled, well-paying jobs, and to add to the tax base.” The groundbreaking was attended by officials from three counties, including Alameda County District I Supervisor Scott Haggerty, Contra Costa County District III Supervisor Mary Piepho, and San Joaquin County District V Supervisor Leroy Ornellas. Also in attendance were Dennis Lopez and Albert Beltran from the Byron Municipal Advisory Council; Jim Lamb, Bernice Tingle and Celeste Farron from the Mountain House Community Services District Board; Contra Costa Planning Commissioner Richard Clark; Tom Weber, Geoff Logan and Kathy Leighton from the Contra Costa Airport Land Use Commission; and Tracy Mayor Pro Tem Michael Maciel. The project is scheduled to be online by July 1, 2012. At that time, it will supply power to the East Bay region under a longterm contract with Pacific Gas and Electric Company. “As we all know, the most important component to a successful project is our customer,” said Diamond Senior Vice President Bo Buchynsky. “We’ve had the pleasure of working with so many folks in their gas, transmission and energy contracts departments, and we look forward to a long-term successful partnership with PG&E.” The Mariposa Energy Project will help prevent blackouts during extremely hot weather by providing peak power on demand when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine.

business owners have learned that since the Planning Commission zoned the property at the corner of Sand Creek Road and Brentwood Boulevard “big-box,” there is a serious threat to our small-town charm and business livelihood to allow a Walmart store to move into our town at the site. Last Tuesday night, we presented over 435 signatures to the City Council that were gathered in only one week’s time against a Walmart in Brentwood, not just on Sand Creek but anywhere. Brentwood and its residents are spending millions of dollars to revitalize and beautify our downtown. We sat in workshop after workshop to help shape the Brentwood Boulevard Specific Plan, as well as our General Plan – Walmart is contrary to the good ideas we’ve helped develop for economic vitality, and undercuts our longtime Brentwood business owners. There should be no rush to shoddy development as our good ideas are coming to fruition. In the coming weeks, we will gather signatures for a ballot initiative. We will work together not as paid collectors but passionate Brentwood residents giving up our own free time and who strongly believe Walmart has no place in our town. We’ll need about 2,700 signatures from registered voters in Brentwood to allow us to send a message to the City Council, the Planning Commission and Walmart that we the residents do not want Walmart not now; not ever. Say no to Walmart Editor: In regard to a recent letter to the editor by Victor Silva, proposing the establishment of a “committee” to study bringing Walmart to Brentwood: What are we thinking? This is the politically correct approach but total nonsense and a waste of time and effort (even John F. Kennedy said, “Committees are large groups of people doing the work of one”). There is already a huge abundance of data, information and impact studies available to see the Walmart impacts to cities. Do we really think we need more studies? Have we lost our ability to see the obvious and use our common sense? Here is a quick evaluation and all you need to know to make your decision: Pros: You will provide a low-cost facility for low-income shoppers, get an uptick in tax revenues and create some low-paying jobs. Cons: You will wipe out many small businesses and jobs in downtown Brentwood (the ones whose charm creates the downtown culture). You will increase blight and crime in the Walmart area (just drive over to Antioch and Pittsburg if you have any uncertainty).

You will send the first big message to Brentwood residents that we are going to be just like all the other cities in the area and are nothing special. Bottom line: Our mayor and city leaders need to step up now and do the obvious. Say no to Walmart and move on to other options for Brentwood. The last thing we need is a committee to tell us what we already know. P.S.: If you really need to see what Walmart produces over time, just visit the Walmarts in Antioch and Pittsburg (but I wouldn’t recommend visiting after dark). Mike Hinchcliff Brentwood

Working hard for history Editor: Under the able leadership of Chairman Patrick McHenry, the East Contra Costa Historical Society held another successful Annual Community Barbecue on Sept. 11, 2011. It was held on the grounds of the Byer/ Nail Museum on Sellers Avenue. Over 350 guests were served a delicious meal and spent the afternoon touring the museum and its other attractions: horseshoeing demonstration by Danny Love, yarn spinning by the Handspinners of Brentwood, Civil War display and gold panning, the restored 1947 Byron fire engine, the recently renovated train caboose, farm equipment from yesteryear, and especially visiting with friends and neighbors. The event would not have been possible without the hard work of volunteers, members and non-members alike, and the generous support of East County. We wish to acknowledge the following for their contributions: Brentwood Rotary Club and Rotary Interact, G&S Farms, Smith Family Farms, McCauley Olive Grove, Wild West BBQ & Catering, Delta Pure Water, Harvest Park Bowl, Winery by the Creek, Sweeney’s Bar & Grill, Oren Allen Youth Rehabilitation Facility, Delta Debris Box Service and several generous financial contributors. Upon arrival, officers and emergency medical personnel found a 68year-old male in the roadway of eastbound Lone Tree Way. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The victim had been walking southbound across Lone Tree Way and was struck by a vehicle traveling in the eastbound lanes. There is no indication that alcohol was a factor. Experience, youth right mix for Lions by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer Liberty High’s girls varsity golf team recently did something no squad has done since 2007 – beat Bay Valley Athletic League dominator Deer Valley. The Lions topped the Wolverines 242246 at Lone Tree Golf Course in Antioch last week. On the par 35 course, Wolverines junior Taylor Coover shot the low score – 40 – but the next three finishers all wore red: senior Lei Wei, 41, and sophomore Shelby Watkins and senior Marissa Apodaca, 47. Though he was thrilled with the victory, Liberty head coach Josh Ellcessor believes his team is capable of much more, not just in the regular season but during the North Coast Section tournament. “I think that we’re hanging in there and we’re doing a great job with some adversity as far as being able to finish,” Ellecessor said. “It’s been a great year. The kids have been working hard in practice and have continued to improve. … We’ve put ourselves in a really good spot to take

league.” Ellcessor, a fourth-year head coach, noted that the key to the Lions’ success this season has been a vital mix of youth and experience. Most of the athletes on his roster are seniors, but sophomore Watkins has proven herself to be a key part of both the present and the future. Liberty returned one of its top athletes from last year, Wei, the reigning BVAL titleholder. Wei won the tiebreaker at last year’s league tournament and has been a steady force at the top for the Lions this season. Liberty also counts on solid contributions from Apodaca, who carded the low score in the Lions’ 220-252 victory over Freedom on Tuesday, and Morgan Hernandez, both seniors. Wei felt that the victory over Deer Valley energized the team, showing Liberty that it can compete with the Bay Area’s best. “We think next time if we go against Deer Valley again, we’ll be even better,” Wei said. “We were kind of nervous, because it was really close. Falcons overcome turnovers to beat Wolf Pack by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer Conventional wisdom says there’s no way Freedom High’s varsity football team should’ve beaten West on Friday night. The Falcons turned the ball over six times and allowed Wolf Pack kick returners to take it to the house twice. Joe Mixon doesn’t care much for conventional wisdom. Freedom’s sophomore running back racked up 262 yards on 33 carries as the Falcons hung on for a wild 30-29 victory in Tracy. “We came back because of heart,” Mixon said. “I tried to do as much as I could for the team, and I came through. They came through for me with those blocks. All I was thinking was, ‘Get that first down and hold that ball.’” The Falcons (3-0) fought hard to keep control in a back-and-forth battle. As the fourth quarter began, West looked like the inevitable victor. After a nine-yard touchdown run by Mixon in the quarter’s opening play gave Freedom a 27-24 lead, Wolf Pack (1-3) receiver Marius Williams ran back the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. The point-after attempt sailed wide right, however, giving the Falcons’ a renewed sense of energy. A field goal would give them the lead.

But a third-down interception off Freedom junior QB Dante Mayes – his third of the evening – gave the ball back to West at the Falcons’ 46. Freedom’s defense held steady, forcing the Wolf Pack to punt. “We fought through a lot of different adversity tonight,” head coach Kevin Hartwig said. “We kept rolling. We’d give up the ball and the defense would get it right back.” With their next possession, the Falcons drove down the field, led by Mixon’s runs. However, Freedom ran into a fourth-and-six situation at West’s 16-yard line. The Falcons

opted to roll the dice and go for it, a move that awkwardly paid off. The Wolf Pack was called for pass interference in the end zone, moving the ball to the 8. After Freedom’s drive stalled at the five, Hartwig called on the player dubbed “The Liberian Nightmare.” Junior wideout Nenwon Gbilia, who also handles kickoff and extra point duties, split the uprights from 20 yards out to give the Falcons the lead. On the ensuing possession, West went three-and-out, allowing Freedom to run out the clock and preserve the victory.

Mayes finished 11-for-26 for 103 yards, three interceptions and one touchdown. Patrick Thompson led the Wolf Pack with 68 yards on 17 carries. “It was crazy,” junior receiver/safety Darrell Daniels said. “We followed the game plan, and the game plan got us our victory.” On Friday, the Falcons look to stay undefeated, traveling to Merced to face Golden Valley. Junior varsity Freedom’s junior varsity team posted a shutout Friday night, beating West 24-0. The Wolf Pack JV has yet to score a point this season. The game was close in the fourth quarter as the Falcons held a 10-0 lead. A QB sneak by Nathan Mallett made it a 17-0 ballgame. A couple minutes later, Aaron Mullins punched it in from one yard out to give Freedom a 24-0 lead. West drove down to the 10-yard line on its final possession, but Daniel Sheppard’s end zone interception brought West’s scoring ambitions to a screeching halt. The victory advanced the Falcons’ record to 3-0. “We started off a little slow … but toward the end of the game, we picked it up pretty well,” head coach Don Birk said. “They came back and played hard.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

Liberty 30, American 18 On short rest, Liberty High’s varsity football team posted an impressive 3018 victory over American in Fremont on Thursday. The Lions didn’t have much time to prepare for their matchup with the Eagles. After lightning postponed Liberty’s game last week from Friday to Saturday, the Lions were forced to get ready fast to face American on Thursday. Head coach Nate Smith felt that the quick turnaround actually helped his team. “I thought it was best for us just to get through this next game as quick as possible to get those two frustrating losses behind us,” Smith said. “I don’t think those first two games were representative of what the kids could do.” Liberty (1-2) took an early lead on a first-quarter touchdown by senior running back Jeff Lindsey. The Lions led 13-0 at halftime on the strength of two 40-yard field goals by senior Kyle Rainsford. Liberty kept scoring in the third quarter on a 63-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Cody Suckow to Lindsey. The Eagles (1-2) put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Deshane Hines ran 47 yards to paydirt. American scored 12 more in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to

make much of a dent in Liberty’s lead. Lindsey finished with 19 carries for 68 yards. East County Lions make strong showing in Benicia The East County Youth Football Scouts worked hard all week and showed that they’ll be tough contenders in the Diablo Valley Youth Football Conference. The Jr. Pee Wee division suffered a 25-15 loss to the Benicia Panthers, bringing their season record to 1-1. Coach Copeland and his staff expressed pride in the way the boys played hard to the end of the game. The ECYFL Pee Wee division improved its record to 2-0 off a 34-0 thrashing of the Panthers. In two games the Lions have outscored their opponents 74-0. Ronnie Rivers jump-started the offense on the first play with a dazzling 40-yard scor-

ing run. He also notched TDs on runs of 44 and six yards. The offensive onslaught continued as QB Abel Ordaz threw a 46yard touchdown pass to Bailey Coston down the right sideline, and Ronnie Rivers hit Ordaz up the middle for a 45-yard scoring strike. The offensive line of Devin Walden, Joseph Guaragna, Marcus Dawal, Harlan Rashada, Richie Kabasinskas and Christian Tatum dominated the line of scrimmage. Coupon from page 1B get a good deal I can’t wait to come home and show my husband what I got.” Crazy for coupons Everyone loves the promise of something for nothing – or at least significant savings – and thanks to the recent economic downturn, discount divas are clipping and clicking in record numbers. According to the Nielsen Clearing House, 77 percent of all Americans use coupons in some capacity, nearly three times more than a few years ago. And a whopping 36 million Internet users are availing themselves of online discounts and deals. But clipping coupons is nothing new, and in fact dates as far back as the 19th century. In 1894, the first coupons were distributed by the Coca-Cola Company, which issued hand-written invitations to consumers for free samples of their new soft drink. Only a year later, C.W. Post followed suit and began using coupons to sell his new breakfast cereal, Grape Nuts. The 1930s saw mom-and-pop establishments offer coupons to regular customers who were struggling to make ends meet during the Depression. By the 1940s, chain supermarkets had also caught coupon fever and began issuing weekly tickets to their customers. Computer coupons came onto the scene in the mid-1990s and allowed a mass market to take advantage of retail savings. Today, billions of coupons are cashed at the counter annually. stores, Leslie Gilbertson didn’t think she had much to learn about saving money on groceries and other items. But last year, the Brentwood resident discovered couponing and took her savings to a whole new level. “I had always shopped at places like Winco and Grocery Outlet and stayed away from Safeway because I was sure that was the most ridiculous place to shop,” said Gilbertson. “But then I started to learn that if you pick and choose and use your coupons, you

can shop everywhere and get great deals. “Last week I went to Safeway and bought an 8-pound pork roast for 75 percent off the original $22 dollar price. I had no idea what I was going to do with a roast that size, but I ended up making pulled pork for a party I was going to, so it worked out perfectly.” Where to begin Although visions of discounts dance in the heads of all couponers, newcom-

ers should take a more realistic approach. “When you’re first starting out, you should start small – focus on one thing, like groceries,” said Wessels. “And then once you get the hang of it and get your confidence up, you can expand your reach.” Which is what Gilbertson did. “Coupons are for everything,” she said. “They’re for mascara, toilet paper, band see Coupon page 3B

If you have a lot of extra of something, you can donate it or save it for a gift.” Online blog sites such as Wessels’ are also helpful because they can target specific items you need and take the guesswork out of finding deals. “A lot of people think couponing takes a lot of time,” said Wessels. “But if you follow a blog online, they do the work for you. For example, if you’re looking for an ad for Skippy peanut butter, you can plug in the name, and the blog will tell you where the deals are in your area. It takes a lot of the work out of couponing.” Where to find them Coupons are everywhere these days, including online and in print. Local businesses have taken advantage of Daily Deals marketing to advertise their products. Facebook and Twitter have also jumped on the bandwagon, alerting customers to up-to-the-minute deals on everything from restaurants and spas to special events and exotic getaways. Coupon exchange clubs have begun to pop up both online and in local communities where enthusiasts can barter and trade their coupons, meet new devotees and foster friendships; all in the name of bargains. And when it comes to bargains, Gilbertson advises shoppers to keep an open mind: “Look outside the box at stores other than grocery stores, like CVS and Rite Aid. The best deal I ever got was at CVS when I ended up with a free prod-

uct by the time I used their savings card and a coupon.” Although deals abound, there are some standard tricks to the coupon trade. Stores will often put a picture of a product on their coupon, but the deal might be good for not just that one item, but any product made by the specified manufacturer. “Also, make sure you check the size of the item,” said Wessels. “Or see if it’s a two-for-one deal. Reading the requirements will save you a lot of time down the road.” “Understand what the final savings will be once you figure in the discount and then decide it it’s right for you,” said Gilbertson. “And always watch your budget. You still need to make dinner tonight and put gas in your car and pay for all the everyday things that we do. So overspending on a product because it had a coupon doesn’t necessarily end up being a deal.” Know when to hold ’em Just because you have the coupon doesn’t mean you must use it. For example, if you wait to use a dollar-off coupon for toilet paper until the product goes on sale, the savings will be significantly larger. “It’s really easy to be tempted to use the dollar-off coupon just because you have it,” said Gilbertson. “But it’s OK to hold onto them until there’s a sale. And if you miss a sale item, remember: all sales have a cycle; they’ll be back. You don’t have to go crazy and run to every drug store every time there’s a sale on something you use.”

The growing popularity of couponing, reflected by reality TV shows that feature “extreme” bargain hunters, has in some circles given couponing a bad name. But many coupon aficionados are quick to criticize the “extreme” approach. “Extreme couponing is very much like hoarding,” said Wessels. “It’s about buying 50 bottles of mustard because it’s on sale or filling a room with paper products you’ll never use in your lifetime. But that’s not what most of us do.” “No,” agreed Gilbertson. “Having whole rooms dedicated to stuff or making little paths through the house so you can walk around is not necessary. But you can take advantage of unused space. Store things under the bed or in places you don’t use. Most of us have those little dead spaces in our homes that we don’t use.” It just feels good In the end, according to Gilbertson, couponing feeds both the pocketbook and the soul. “I still shop at grocery outlets and it’s still fun,” she said. “At some point you get so good at saving that you don’t pay full price for anything. It just feels good. James (Jim) Burke Oct. 12, 1946-Sept. 14, 2011 Brentwood resident Jim Burke died at home surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born and raised in Chicago, Jim graduated from Dwight D. Eisenhower High School in Blue Island, Ill. Jim is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 42 years, Patricia (Daley) Burke: his brothers, Jack Burke (Joie) and Tom Burke (Rosario); his sons, James Burke (Kathy) and Scott Burke (Eadaoin); and the loves of his life, grandchildren Eloisa, Aleisha, Liam, Kenneth and Brendan Burke. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Duane; his mother, Mary Margaret McNerney; and his 2-year-old sister, Mary Frances. After serving as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, he started his career as a heavy-equipment mechanic. He moved his family to California and became a commer-

The next morning, at the end of Sunday Mass, on Aug. 21, the Pope invited everyone to raise up religious items to be cial-truck driver, driving for All American Racers for a short time. “Outstanding” Jim had many passions in life, which included driving, watching car races (NASCAR and Indy), boating, go-carting, cycling, reading, playing with the grandkids, serving Long Islands, bar-b-cueing and playing “words with friends.” Jim will be greatly missed by his family, extended families and friends.
