Kids cruise on the Rosemarie by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent
The Discovery Bay Community Foundation (DBCF) has partnered with Captain Morgan’s Delta Adventures to take local kids on their very own Delta escapades. As a reward to students and staff from the Byron Union School District, the two organizations have smoothed out a plan to fill seats on the Rosemarie, Captain Morgan’s Delta Adventures’ 55-foot cruise boat. “We are excited to have another opportunity to give back to our community,” said Jim Mattison of the DBCF. Paul Koenig, who purchased the Rosemarie from its previous owner, Frank Morgan, is eager to carry on Morgan’s tradition of giving back to the community. “Frank started this thing being very involved in the community,” Koenig said. “He would give away cruise cer-
tificates for charity raffles and auctions, and I thought it was great. These banner cruises are supported by our advertisers and I challenged Jim to fill up the seats.” Students and teachers who are selected will be in for a treat: their morning will start onboard with a breakfast spread provided by Boardwalk Grill, and set against the backdrop of the beautiful Delta. As Koenig pilots the boat through the Delta, he points out wildlife and interesting sights. Anna Wilson and her twin eighth-graders were lucky enough recently to be given seats on a Saturday morning banner cruise. Wilson said she enjoyed it so much, she plans on celebrating her birthday onboard next month. “A teacher from Excelsior Middle School shared that Jim was opening this up for the children, and invited us to bring our twins,” Wilson said. see Cruise page 30

Delta designated as national heritage area by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer
A 10-year effort to obtain federal recognition of the Delta as a place of special significance recently culminated with President Trump’s signing of the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act, and the establishment of the SacramentoSan Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area (Delta NHA). “National heritage areas are National Park Service recognized places where people have made an important contribution to the landscape,” explained Erik Vink, executive director
for the Delta Protection Commission (DPC). “Unlike a national park or a national monument where it’s all about the natural features, a national heritage area is about the interplay of the landscape with the role of people, the culture and the local economy where (people) have made a significant contribution, and where they tell an important story.” The Delta NHA is one of 55 NHAs in the country and the first to exist entirely within the state of California. “From our perspective, the real see Delta page 30
