iscovery Bay resident Barbara Schneider and sister Joan Burnett of Benicia recently took their Hometown Weekly Newspaper on a trip to Alaska to watch the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Barbara and Joan even sallied forth on their own dogsled ride. “The sound of the running dogs and the sled going throughout the snow was serene,� said Barbara. “We both got tears in our eyes.� The two also witnessed the glory of an aurora borealis, took in an ice-sculpting contest and toured an ice museum. Tri Delta challenges commuters

If gas prices alone aren’t enough to get you commuting by bus, Tri Delta Transit is providing even more incentive. From April 16 through May 11, Tri Delta and 511 Contra Costa will provide free bus passes to commuters who currently don’t use the bus. It’s the second annual Tri Delta Transit Challenge, which challenges people to use public transit once a week for four weeks. Those who accept the challenge will get not only four free days of bus rides, but the chance to win $100. “With gas prices back above $4 per gallon, we know using the bus is something many people are considering,” said Director of Marketing Mike Furnary. “However, it seems some people need that little extra incentive to try it. We’re not suggesting that people quit using their cars all at once. We want them to gradually make the move to using public transit. That’s the idea behind the challenge: make the bus part of your commute maybe just once a week to start and see for yourself how well it

Gallery on Second opens first show by Amy Claire Correspondent A work of art can provoke a knowing smile or inspire deep philosophical thought. It can make us laugh or cry. It can thrill, terrify, amuse and confuse – sometimes all at once. To continue bringing art to the forefront of local culture, Jack and Betty Gaughan are developing the Gallery on Second as a division of the Brentwood Theater Company. The new gallery, in addition to displaying high-quality art, will serve as a focal point for events through which artists can share their talents and passions with the public. The gallery’s grand opening will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 4 p.m. A complimentary reception will follow the ribbon cutting, giving attendees the opportunity to view the gallery’s first show and enjoy light refreshments. “People who come will be able to visit with the artists,” said Gaughan. “A lot of them will be here.” Gaughan chose the gallery’s opening date to correspond with the timing of the 2012 Artists’ Open Studio Tour, an annual event at which community members can watch professional artists work, and ask them questions. This year’s event, held May 11 through 13, will include 40 artists working at 21 studios. The tour is self-guided, giving attendees the opportunity to choose which studios to visit and

Summit helps business make Digital Impact After 25 years in business, real estate broker Rosa Chang knows real estate. What she didn’t know, however, is how the Internet and social media services such as Facebook could help make Legacy Real Estate Associates even more successful. What’s more, she didn’t have the time to learn. “I was just swamped, even though I’m not that well known in Brentwood yet,” said Chang, who recently relocated from the Livermore area. After attending last December’s Impact Marketing Summit conducted by The Press, however, that appears to be changing. “I’ve already got a couple of leads,” said Chang, who got help setting up a website and establishing a presence on Facebook. Her website, part of The Press Business Directory, has been optimized for search engines and is already paying off. “A client said, ‘I just Googled real estate in Brentwood and your name came up,’” said Chang. She helped the man sell his house and buy a new one from another of Chang’s clients. “It was a trifecta,” she said. “You can’t beat that story. I know (digital marketing) will be very helpful for my business.” Michele Chatburn, Social Media Manager at The Press, said Chang’s story isn’t unique. What’s unusual is that Chang caught up on the latest in the digital world without leaving town. “The level of info you get at our seminars is something you usually must travel outside East County to get,” said Chatburn. “Plus, you
not only learn something, you get fed!” Thanks to stories like Chang’s, The Press has expanded its Summit series. Two sessions will be offered this month: Wednesday, April 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.; and Thursday, April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Both seminars will be held at Cap’s Oak Street Bar & Grill, and include dinner (on the 25th) or lunch (on the 26th). “The new Facebook timeline started March 30, and a lot of people have no idea what to do about it or how the new tools it offers can help them,” said Chatburn. “We can help them use it to tell the story of their business.” Topics will also include managing your page’s story flow, QR codes and how to network with experts in your industry. Keynote presenter for the seminar will be Jason Smith, digital marketing consultant for Radiate Media of Utah. Along with Chatburn, Smith will explain why digital marketing is a critical supplement to traditional print advertising. “Businesses need to be relevant on the World Wide Web, because that’s where more and more people are doing their research before making a buying decision,” said Chatburn. TENANT WARNING If you are looking to rent a home from someone you don’t know, you need to be very careful these days. Potential tenants need to be VERY careful and they need to research their landlord like never before. First, to make sure they won’t be foreclosed on during their rental term. Not only do you have to move but you may lose your deposit. Second, that the landlord actually OWNS the property, that they aren’t some scammer who just took over some vacant property. Here are my tips for how to minimize your risk. Meet the landlord in person at the property and ask them to bring their mortgage statement. Look at the payment amount. If it is substantially more than you will be paying in rent, that’s a red flag. Next see if you can tell if it’s a fixed-rate loan or an ARM (it won’t always tell you on the statement). If you can’t tell, ask the landlord. Next, look at the “next due” and if it’s MORE than one payment, that means they are behind and that’s a MAJOR red flag! Next ask them to pull out their driver’s license and make sure it matches the name on the statement. If they can’t or won’t do any of the
above, think twice about renting it! Now, if you are dealing with a real estate agent or property manager you know and trust, and they tell you they’ve verified all the above that will give you a higher level of confidence. But it still wouldn’t hurt to have them search the County records for any foreclosure notices, or do it yourself! Leases signed after certain steps in the foreclosure process can be deemed invalid by the foreclosing lender. Be especially careful of rentals on CraigsList, especially when the landlord says they got transferred out of the country suddenly and are renting the home for less than market rent, but you never meet them in person. Scammers would rather not use a property management company to list their home for lease because it’s one more person that might discover the fraud. Local girls to compete in pageant Four East County residents will compete at the Miss Teen San Francisco Pageant on April 29. The competition features modeling routines involving casual and formal wear and an onstage interview. Personality is the numberone criterion on which contestants are judged during all phases of competition. Anna Githua, Courtney Rundles and Jessica Subocz – all from Brentwood – will compete for the local Miss Teen title. Githua, 16, is a junior at Heritage High School. She enjoys reading,
drama, networking and soccer. Subocz, also a student at Heritage, aspires to attend the Culinary Institution of America in New York and plans to become a pastry chef and eventually open her own bakery. Ithemba Bell of Antioch will compete in the Miss Pre-Teen competition. The 12-year-old student at Orchard Park School is active in sports yearround and plays clarinet in the school band. Her dream is to become a NASA engineer. The winner will advance to the na-
tional competition, held in Orlando, Fla., where more than $30,000 in prizes and awards will be up for grabs. Resource center gives back to kids by Amy Claire Correspondent Childhood is a critical time for learning, and the Village Community Resource Center in Brentwood helps the community give kids in need an educational boost. The volunteer organization’s primary activity is an after-school tutoring program, through which 50 to 60 children in kindergarten through eighth grade receive homework help and learn how to do research on supervised computers. Since many of the students are learning English as a second language – but aren’t completely comfortable in their home language, either – the Center’s program emphasizes language skills. “They’re caught between two worlds,” said Board President Chris Calabrese. “It’s a challenge, but it’s also an opportunity.” Events such as pajama reading nights encourage not only a capacity for reading, but a love for it. Math nights, at which parents practice alongside their kids, are also popular. Life skills such as respect, responsibility and leadership form the foundation that help kids find a path to success. Previous students have grown up to become police officers, teachers, social workers, health care professionals, NASA employees … and those who return to the Center as volunteers. Anthony Murillo, board member and program director, was one of the first 11 students to come to the Center when it opened in 1997. “I remember walking through the door and being very scared,” he said, “but realizing I would be in a better position to give back.” He sees the same trepidation in the eyes of newcomers today and works to dispel the discomfort and help the kids feel secure. “That’s the key: understanding it’s a safe haven.” The volunteers who worked at the Center helped Murillo succeed, both educationally and personally. “All the things we dreamed of as kids … the center brought those back to fruition.” The Center is always seeking additional tutoring volunteers “folks that are interested in working with kids,” said Calabrese. “In this economy, a lot of people can’t give back financially, but they can definitely give back by volunteering.” The Center also welcomes volunteers to help with services such as translation assistance and a weekly food bank. Another focus of the Center is health care. Medical professionals from John Muir hospital give of their time, providing a free mobile clinic on a weekly basis, and flu shots once a year. “We really appreciate what they’re doing,” said Calabrese. Financial support comes through private donors and the East Bay Community Foundation, and the board members are grateful for the continued donations. According to Calabrese, “They’re the reason we’re still here.” The volunteers who offer their time and resources to help improve the lives of the

Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits… Not as easy as it may seem by Joan Grimes, Esq. In recent articles we’ve discussed how to determine if you are eligible for Social Security Disability benefits and what the SSA considers “disabled”. Now let’s talk about actually applying for benefits. You may have heard that it is almost impossible to get a disability award from the Social Security Administration (SSA); it is difficult but not impossible. Let’s take a look. Hopefully you have been keeping good records about your condition and symptoms, and how they affect your daily life, and why your condition prevents you from working. If you haven’t been, start keeping track. You need to be specific and detailed about the impact on your mental and physical well-being. You are going to need the support of your doctor. Not all doctors are familiar with what evidence the SSA needs to support a finding of being disabled. Many people are confused and think that their doctor can “prescribe” disability benefits. Unfortunately, this is not true. In most cases, the SSA will send your doctor one or more forms to complete on your behalf. You will need to communicate to SSA how your impairment affected you on the job, the type of jobs you’ve had and specifically what your duties were. Your titles when working are not quite as important as the specific tasks that you performed. SSA now allows you to apply for Disability Benefits in three ways, 1) In person; 2) by phone; or 3) online. When applying in person you don’t need an appointment but it will cut down on the time you sit in the local field

office. You will be interviewed and someone will actually help you fill out the application. It will help to have as much documentation and information as possible with you. You don’t need to have all possible details in hand; you will be able to submit additional evidence before the case is determined. Applying by phone is a great option if you live far from a field office or if your condition prevents you from traveling. You will be interviewed and sent forms in the mail to complete and sign. Applying online allows you to complete the application at your own pace and there are phone numbers for SSA given on the website if you need help completing the online application. Another event, Art Walk, is held once a month on the sidewalks surrounding the Brentwood Farmers’ Market. Artists set up displays of their work for viewing and purchase, and some work on new pieces on the spot. The events give artists another opportunity to share their creations while adding additional festivity to the downtown area. For the gallery’s next show, Gaughan will feature Bill Weber, a painter “nationally known for his murals.” Gaughan plans to show many well-known artists at the gallery and hold events outdoors, such as “painting at the park” days for lo-
posing more music than nearly any composer in history. His complete works occupy 150 volumes – each one as thick as your average telephone book. Although it’s estimated that about one third of Bach’s music is still lost, he is nevertheless the most recorded composer in history. His works have been adapted for everything from jazz choir to synthesizer, from banjo to bagpipes. Niner legend inspires boys at Orin Allen At age of 53, former San Francisco 49er Keena Turner looks like he can still stuff a running back on third-and-one. Though he spoke in a gentle and positive manner to the audience of 100 boys at the recent Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Facility event, it was clear that the boys, guards, teachers and administrators felt the intensity of the all-pro linebacker’s convictions. “Life is about chasing goals, and I know many of you have goals right now. Just remember: there will be challenges that act as roadblocks to you achieving your positive goals, but you need to break through them. You are all at the beginning of your life journey, and that journey starts with you – right now.” Turner was invited to deliver his inspirational message by Delta Vista High School teacher Allan Cacciaroni. Delta Vista is a Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) institution that provides state-accredited education to the youth of the Orin Allen facility. “The boys really love hearing from these speakers,” said Cacciaroni. “They showed Mr. Turner lots of respect by listening so intently.” Other gridiron greats Cacciaroni has brought to Orin Allen include Ronnie Lott, Eason Ramson and Bennie Blades. Turner, a member of four Super Bowl teams in his 11 seasons with the Niners, brought two of his Super Bowl
rings for the boys to hold, try on and marvel at. “I’m very happy to have those rings and other accolades that my team and I accomplished, but I’m more proud of the college degree I earned,” said Turner. Turner attended Purdue University, where he majored in physical education. “After my playing days, I went straight back to college and earned my B.S. degree in organizational behavior at the University of San Francisco. “Let me tell you guys: I keep my Super Bowl rings in my sock drawer, but I have my college diploma hanging up on a wall in my house.” Turner spoke of his current life: father of three, an active volunteer for the Boys & Girls Club, and his job as vice president of football affairs with the 49ers. He also described his life leading up to his football career – growing up in Chicago, playing high school football and attending Purdue. Among the questions Turner fielded from the boys: How much money did he make while playing? Who was the hardest hitter on the team? Did he get into trouble as a young man? Who was the most difficult player to tackle? Did he do drugs? Was he related to Tina Turner? In his closing remarks, Turner reminded the boys to set and achieve their goals for a better life, and start their positive journeys immediately.

County offers traffic amnesty A six-month program began Jan. 1, 2012 for certain traffic bail and fines. The one-time amnesty period offers discounted fines for some old, unpaid traffic tickets that were due and payable before Jan. 1, 2009. Defendants may make a lump sum payment of 50 percent of the total outstanding balance, including the base fine, assessments, late charges or other fees, of certain violations to fully satisfy the court-ordered obligation. Parking tickets, driving under the influence and reckless driving cases are not eligible for this program. Other qualifying conditions include: • The defendant must not have not appeared in court, or must not have paid the fine in full. • Any previous payment must have been made on or before January 1, 2009. • Restitution must not be owed to a victim on any case within the county where the traffic case was filed. • The defendant must have no outstanding misdemeanor or felony warrants within the county. Ruth Esther Coombs (Brecht) was born in Culbertson, Neb. on Dec. 23, 1921 to George and Anna Marie (Walker) Brecht. She passed away on Saturday, March 31 at 4:30 p.m. at Sunrise Guest Home in Elk Grove, Calif. with family members by her side. Ruth was the youngest child of a family of five boys – six children total. She graduated from high school at the age of 16 in Herndon, Kan. as salutatorian of her class. She received a scholarship for Business School in Grand Island, Neb., where she met her beloved husband, Albert Roland (“Rolly”) Coombs. They were married in Kansas a year later on Nov. 17, 1939. Ruth and Rolly settled in Scottsbluff, Neb., where they lived for the next 20 years and raised their four children. In 1959 the family moved to Southern California, and after the children were on their own, Rolly and Ruth moved to Northern California, where they lived in Antioch and then Oakley. Ruth will be remembered for her warmth and absolute dedication as a wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend to so many. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years and is survived by their four children and spouses: JoDee and Jim Moore, Donald and Paula Coombs, Richard and Barbara Coombs and Michael and Terry Coombs; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her family is blessed with the memories of her beauty, spunkiness, strength and the wisdom she bestowed. She will forever be loved and missed by all.
Bonnibel Adair Lane May 28, 1917-March 16, 2012 Bonnibel Adair Lane passed away on March 16 following a short illness. She was 94. Bonnie, as her friends knew her, was born in Dayton, Ohio to William and Mae Skinner. She came to California as a teenager with her mother and returned to Ohio, where she married and had her first three children: June, Jack and Billy. She returned with her older children to California, where she went to work as a switchboard operator in Berkeley City Hall. In 1956, while working there, she

earned her high school diploma and graduated alongside her oldest daughter, June. She was a member of the El Sobrante writer’s club, the El Sobrante Riders and the California State Horsemen’s Association. In 1962, she met her soulmate, Frank, on a blind date. They married six months later, moved to Concord and started a family. In 1967, they moved to Brentwood, where she retired to be a stay-athome mom. She was active in the Brentwood Parents Club and was a member of East County Soroptimist. She took classes at Los Medanos College and became a news correspondent for the Antioch Daily Ledger and the Delta News. During summers when her children were teenagers, she worked as field manager on the tomato fields. In later years, she became a member of the Victory Baptist Church in Brentwood and was a member of the VFW. Bonnie was a wonderful person who made many friends. She loved to crochet lap blankets and give them to everyone. She also pursued her love of reading, which she acquired at an early age, and left a small library of books in her home. She is survived by her children, Bonnibel L. Lane and Franklin (Rick) Lane of Brentwood; brother, James Skinner of Sumter, S.C.; stepchildren, Dwight and Claretta Lane; six grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by husband Frank P. Lane; her parents, William and Mae Skinner; stepmother, Leah Skinner; sister, Jennie Margaret (Skinner) Baptiste; brothers, Frank Arnold and Rodger Skinner; children, June Greenhill, Jack DeLay and William Baughman; and stepson, David Lane. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bonnie’s honor to Sutter Care Hospice, 4071 Port Chicago Highway in Concord.
George Bell 1921-2012 Longtime Discovery Bay resident George Bell passed away on March 5. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his kindness. A World War II veteran, George was husband to Blanch for 51 years. He was a member of the Discovery Bay Athletic Club for 32 years and owner of Bell Electric Co. in Lafayette for 40 years.

Antioch woman honored for outreach by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer For many East County youths who have run afoul of the law, the Antioch-based Reach Project is the final wake-up call before prison or juvenile hall. Police departments in Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood refer to the program teens who have been arrested on drug or alcohol charges. While with Reach, they’re taught how to make smarter decisions and plan for the future. Some quit the program and become reoffenders. Many more graduate and turn their lives around. It’s for this success rate that Reach Cofounder Shirley Marchetti was recently honored as a Comcast Hometown Hero. Several other East County residents were selected as Hometown Heroes this year, including Josie Monaghan and John Farman of Antioch, Pamela and Bill Doheney of Brentwood, and Fred Schau of Oakley. “It’s an honor to be placed in with people who are going out and they’ve done things on their own and started some wonderful projects,” Marchetti said. “I didn’t do it alone. Throughout the years, I’ve had a lot of help.” Shirley Marchetti, sister-in-law of football star Gino, founded the Reach Project on April 1, 1970 with Antioch Police Sgt. Leon LeRoy. She felt the need to do something in response to the offer of drugs to her son, a junior high student at the time. When the

Antioch’s Shirley Marchetti was recently honored as a Comcast Hometown Hero for her work with the Reach Project. Antioch City Council appointed her to a committee to curb youth drug use, Marchetti and LeRoy started Reach. She figured she’d just help it get started and work on it for about a month. Forty-two years later, Marchetti is still involved, serving as the program’s assistant director. In 2004, she handed over the executive directorship to her son, Mickey. The Reach Project helps about 2,000 people annually – not all of whom are kids. The program augments its youth services by offering classes and help for parents who are
struggling to communicate with their children. In Brentwood, Reach also offers support to grandparents raising kids. The program provides services for alcohol and drug abuse treatment, tailored to kids, families and adults. Oakley Police Officer Lance Morrison, who handles juvenile cases, considers Reach a valuable crime-fighting asset. “If we feel like they’re going to stick to that commitment and they’re going to obey the law and abstain from drugs, then we’ll give them a shot,” Morrison said. “It’s amazing how many kids
complete the program. It becomes kind of a safe haven to talk about life’s problems.” One of the major programs offered by Reach is the Juvenile Diversion Program, where Reach partners with local police departments to help young people arrested on drug or alcohol charges. For many, it’s their last hope before a trip to juvenile hall or the Byron Boys Ranch. Reach also accepts referrals from parents worried that their child might be heading down the wrong path. One young man who battled drug problems was admitted to the program for a few months, quit, but then returned earlier this year for a second chance. Since he’s returned to Reach, he’s doing better in school and hasn’t touched drugs. After he finishes high school, he’s hoping to go to film school. “Since I haven’t been using, my whole attitude has changed,” he said. “I’ve got faith I’m going to complete it. I appreciate (Reach) a lot. It’s helping me stay out of trouble.” Marchetti estimated that roughly 90 percent of those who enter the program change for the better. She truly loves the young people who come through Reach and it warms her heart when they finally learn how to make better decisions, even if it’s a rough process. “I like these kids – somebody has to like them,” Marchetti said. “You have to like people enough to hold them accountable. Upon arrival, officers found the wreckage of a vehicle that had been traveling southbound, apparently at a high rate of speed. The driver, while negotiating a curve, had apparently spun before striking a tree. The vehicle was torn in half on impact; two passengers were ejected while another passenger and the driver were trapped inside. Fire personnel extracted the two trapped occupants. The driver and one of the ejected passengers were transported by helicopters to area hospitals and listed in stable condition, having sustained injuries to the face and legs. The other two victims were transported by ambulance to area hospitals and were treated for minor injuries and complaint of pain. All parties involved are expected to survive. Alcohol is suspected to have contributed to the collision, which is under investigation. Wolverines start hot on diamond by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer Thanks to dominant pitching and clutch hitting, Deer Valley’s baseball team is blazing out of the gates this season. Allowing a mere 19 runs in their first 10 games, the Wolverines were 9-1 as they headed into the Righetti Spring Classic in Santa Maria this week. Manager Dennis Luquet credited the fine record to the quality of the Wolverines’ pitching. Senior right-hander Ricky Delgado, who will attend Cal State Fullerton next year, has started the season 5-0 with a 0.55 earned run average. He’s also fanned 27 batters, walking 11. Known as a hard thrower, Delgado has been working more on location than velocity. The new approach has worked. “He’s just trying to slow things down and have better control,” Luquet said. “He was too fast before, trying to throw too hard. He’s calmed down his windup and his mechanics.”
Even when the ball isn’t in Delgado’s hand, Deer Valley has earned success on the mound. As a team, the Wolverines boast a 0.74 ERA and a total of 71 strikeouts in their first 10 games. Senior Jacob Peters has been another pleasant surprise. Through his first 19.1 innings, he hasn’t allowed an earned run, and batters are hitting merely .090 against him. In five appearances, he’s chalked up one win and two saves. Junior Tyler Vistalli, the Wolverines’ third starting pitcher, is 3-1 with two saves and a 1.02 ERA. While the bulk of the Wolverines’ scoring has come in two games – a 20-1 win over Tennyson and a 10-0 victory over Ygnacio Valley – in the team’s other games, the margin of victory has been slim. “We seem to score just enough runs to win,” Luquet said. “We make some key plays when we need them and we make a clutch hit when we need it, so it guess

When Arne Schmidt quit playing tennis at the age of 12 in his home of Bremen, Germany, he thought he had given up the game he started playing at age 6. Five years and 5,000 miles later, Schmidt is back on the court for the Liberty boys tennis team this season following his arrival in the United States in September as part of a one-year foreign exchange program from Germany. “When I got here, I thought it is time for a comeback, time to give it another shot,” said Schmidt, a junior. “In Germany, we do not have high school sports teams. We go to school, do our schoolwork, and that is about it. We can’t really develop any high school spirit, which is one of the reasons why I came here.” Schmidt started the season in the No. 4 singles spot for the Lions, but according to Liberty head coach Thurston Brice, he could soon take over the No. 2 slot. “He’s a competitor and doesn’t like to lose,” Brice said. “We had a kid out here beating him half to death because he had something he had never seen before. We got together, learned how to combat it, and he came back to win the match. I’m see Court page 25A

Heritage excels at Livermore Stampede by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer The first major test for the Heritage High softball team came last weekend at the Livermore Stampede tournament. While the Patriots didn’t ace the exam, they did well enough to show they can be serious contenders in the North Coast Section. Heritage lost the first game 2-0 to Amador Valley, but defeated Johansen, California and Cosumnes Oaks to round out the tournament.
The loss to the Dons was the first of the year for the Patriots, who hold a 9-1 record. “Some teams in our bracket were tough teams – ranked teams,” Heritage head coach Ron Rivers said. “I thought that was going to be the best test for us to get us ready for league. We have a lot to improve on.” The Patriots started out facing defending NCS champion Amador Valley, but the Dons’ pitching was too strong. Heritage managed two hits in the contest and absorbed a tough 2-0 loss.
The Patriots took out their offensive frustrations on the Johansen Vikings. Heritage toppled Johansen 16-2 in a game shortened by the mercy rule. Three Patriots recorded a multi-hit game and junior first baseman Ali Ramirez launched a home run. Heritage proved it could win close games, taking a 1-0 contest with California in the next round. Senior pitcher Lisa Rodrigues helped her own cause, driving home Ramirez in the sixth inning for the game’s lone run. The Patriots won comfortably in the
tournament’s final contest, a 10-2 win over Cosumnes Oaks. Junior catcher Malia Rivers rapped out four hits and scored all four times she got on base. Ramirez also went 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Kaylee James batted in three runs. “We really have that jell right now, where the girls are cheering each other on,” Rivers said. “It’s been a total team effort.” Heritage competes in this weekend’s Antioch HASA Tournament; then starts Bay Valley Athletic League play on April 17 at Pittsburg.

The NorCal Titans 12U Blue baseball team made an impressive run in Arizona, amassing a 5-1 record and capturing second place at the Triple Crown Championships. The Titans opened with wins over the AABC Crusaders (10-2), the SoCal Storm (6-5) and the Arizona Grinders (10-6) to go 3-0 in pool play. Milan Mijanovic was intimidating on the mound, throwing three innings of nohit ball to set the tone against the Crusaders. Walker Brinkman and Conner Capps paced the offense with two hits apiece and combined for five RBIs. In the Storm game, a 10-inning title fight, Trevor Wilson’s three hits – complementing three sterling innings on the mound – were a key in this big win. Jimmy Kabrich’s four innings of work on the mound and game-winning hit ended the first night of pool play for the Titans at 2-0. Anthony Beckstead pitched four innings to get the win over the Arizona Grinders. Dior Walker and Keith Hale both were spectacular offensively and defensively to send the Titans to the No. 3
seed entering championship play. Starting championship play, the Titans took on the Las Vegas Extreme. Philip Apodaca’s three hits, including two doubles and one triple, and Trevor Wilson’s three-inning, five-strikeout performance were enough to send the Titans to the semifinals against the SoCal SKLZ. The combined pitching of Walker Brinkman, Milan Mijanovic and Jimmy Kabrich kept the SKLZ offense at bay in the 3-1 victory. Logan Huntze’s work behind the plate was outstanding as usual. Huntze, who caught five of the Titans’ six total games, made a huge defensive play in the semifinal game when he took a ball off the backstop and sprinted to the plate to tag out what would have been the SKLZ’s lead run. Jordan Gartner sparked the offense for the Titans in the championship game with two hits and spectacular glove work at first base, but the Dirt Dawgs’ offense proved too much for the Titans, who surrendered six runs in the second inning and earned a second-place finish with a score of 10-6. – Contributed by Scott Kabrich

2011 College Grads May be Claimed as Dependents …whether or not they want to be! If your son or daughter graduated from college last year, you may have been wondering whether your child could or should be claimed as a dependent on your 2011 tax return. Although a large refund may be greatly appreciated by a recent grad living on an entry-level salary, you may feel that you need a tax deduction more than your offspring. Don’t be surprised, however, if you aren’t able to benefit. If your child was under 24 years-of age on December 31 and a student for 5 months, he or she may qualify as your dependent. A person who can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return can’t claim his or her own exemption, even if the other taxpayer doesn’t claim the exemption. Canny graduates often look for loopholes in the five-month requirement. Since many colleges host their graduation ceremonies in mid-May, they reason that five full months have not elapsed, so they can still claim their own exemption and get more of a refund. Not so – IRS considers a student who attended college full-time from January 1 – May 1 to have been a student for five months. But this doesn’t mean Junior won’t have to file a return. If his income in 2011 topped $5,800, he must file a tax return. If his unearned income exceeded $950, he will also need to file a return. Unfortunately, due to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), many parents don’t benefit from the deduction even though the child can’t take the exemption. While the
majority of Americans don’t understand the AMT, the IRS describes it as a tax that “attempts to ensure that anyone who benefits from certain tax advantages pays at least a minimum amount of tax.” Although it was originally developed to make sure the wealthy were paying their share, at today’s income levels the AMT applies to a lot of middle income families. The AMT does not allow the standard deduction, personal exemptions, or certain itemized deductions. President Obama has proposed abolishing the AMT in favor of the “Buffett Rule,” which would require people making more than $1 million a year to pay at least 30 percent in taxes. However, no one thinks the AMT is going away anytime soon. Trevor’s Weekly Mortgage Matters Annual Percentage Rate The annual percentage rate, or APR, for either a first time home buyer, or an individual looking for their next home, is truly one of the most useful tools setup in their favor – “its purpose was to allow consumers to shop for credit by comparing the fine print,” according to an article in United States Banker. The annual percentage rate is important as it allows consumers to compare apples to apples, or even apples to oranges – if, of course, we consider apples to equal fixed rate loans, and oranges to represent adjustable rate mortgages, or ARMS. It is essential when comparing loans/ interest rates and should not be overlooked. As part of The Federal Truth in Lending Act of 1968, the annual percentage rate is calculated much differently than the actual note rate and can always be found on your Truth in Lending disclosure. While the note rate simply represents the yearly rate at which your lender will collect interest for permitting you to borrow money for a specific length of time, your APR represents the total cost of credit on a yearly basis after all charges – points, appraisal, credit report, processing, and document fees etc. are taken into consideration. It is typically higher than your actual interest rate because it includes these additional items and assumes you will keep the loan for the full term. Let’s look at how APRs are calculated. For our illustration we will assume a note rate of 5.50% on a fixed rate loan. On a 30

year term, and a loan amount of $150,000, the monthly payments would be $851.68. In order to calculate the APR for this loan we would first subtract out the fees: $1500 (one point), $425 for the appraisal, $500 for processing and $16.50 for a credit report. $150,000 minus $2441.50 equals $147,558.50. This new figure of $147,558.50 would reflect on our Truth in Lending disclosure as the amount being financed, when in fact we are borrowing $150,000… here is where APR comes into effect. We take the new figure of $147,558.50 and use it as our present value/loan amount to determine the true cost of the loan. By working the equation backwards until we receive the same $851.68 monthly payment as if the loan amount were still $150,000, we come up with our annual percentage rate. In this case, our APR is 5.65%, the true cost of borrowing the amount of the loan being applied to the actual purchase, after paying all the fees. Remember, although the note rate is what you calculate your monthly payment off of, and is the figure you’ll compare with your neighbors at the dinner table, the APR is the figure you should be most interested in. It is the only way to truly compare the cost of one loan versus another, and was put in place to protect you. Board members chosen for RDA successor agency Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Ovick has named 14 appointees to boards that oversee agencies operating the dissolved redevelopment agencies (RDA) in Contra Costa County. The California Supreme Court issued a ruling last December effectively shutting down redevelopment agencies as of Feb. 1. Starting May 1, each RDA will be operated by a successor agency board to manage property tax revenues, debt retirement and asset disposal. Each successor agency will be governed by a seven-member oversight board. The county superintendent of schools appoints one member to each oversight board to represent schools. Members of the county’s 17 redevelopment agency oversight boards serve at the pleasure of the entity that appointed them and receive no compensation or reimbursement of expenses. An individual may serve on up to five separate oversight boards at any one time and may hold an office in a school or community college district. The nomination was seconded by Simon. “What I would like to see happen here tonight is: I don’t want this to be a popularity contest, or what this board has been in the past, which is the good-old-boys network,” said Simon. “We have an obligation to the residents of this community to bring the most qualified person onto this board … and that is the reason I second the nomination of Bruce Hall.” Simon and Tetreault voted for Hall; Director Kevin Graves and President Chris Steele dissented. Graves then introduced Mattison’s nomination, which was seconded by Steele. “I think that Jim brings a fresh look to the board and has a lot of great skills in project management and leadership,” said Steele. “And I think he will continue to make this the place where we live and play in Discovery Bay.” However, Tetreault voted against Mattison and Simon abstained, leaving legal council to call for a fiveminute recess to determine how an abstention affects the vote under the guidelines of Rosenberg’s Rules, which the board follows. “In reviewing your bylaws,” said CSD legal counsel Dan Schroeder. “The affirmative vote of three members are required for action … Abstention is not an affirmative vote; it is not a majority vote.”

Steele urged his fellow board members to try again. “I would just remind us that we are at a crossroads,” said Steele. “And again, our community and constituents have asked us to serve them and be representative of them and I would ask that we reconsider. I think that it is very important that we are able to function as a board and keep our decisions local … I would prefer that we could work this out tonight and not have a default.” Simon said his abstention had nothing to do with Mattison on a personal level. “I abstained because to have that would put four Lions Club members on the board, and I’m considering resigning,” said Simon, “because it is my belief that having one group having total representation on the board is wrong.” In the end, Tetreault changed his vote. “OK, here’s the deal,” said Tetreault. “I like Jim, I serve with him on the Lions and my vote was nothing personally against him … But because I do not want to send it back to the Board of Supervisors, I make a motion to reconsider the nomination.” Mattison was appointed in a 3-1, Simon again abstaining. hen asked what she likes most about her job as owner and manager of Orchard Creek Ranch, Erin Mathias doesn’t need Orchard Creek Ranch offers lessons for every level of horse enthusiast, including these beginners seen putting their mounts through their paces last weekend.
long to come up with her answer: “Everything!” But if Mathias absolutely must choose her favorite part about working at a horse ranch, “It would be working with the kids,” she said. “I love watching them grow as riders as they learn new skills, but I also love watching them grow as individuals as they gain confidence in their abilities. They develop communications skills, and their demonstration of responsibility is phenomenal. I’m continually impressed. These kids become like family.” Mathias has been sharing her love of horses with East County residents since she opened her ranch in 2004, marshaling years of experience to train riders and horses alike. In her career, she has won more than 35 championships, hi-point and all-around titles. While Mathias trains with show teams and prepares young riders to present their horses at shows and exhibitions, she also works with novice riders. whatever your goals are. A lot of kids start out just wanting to learn how to ride, but after a few lessons, they’ve got the bug and they want to join a show team.” Mathias is quick to caution parents that equestrian activities are to be taken seriously. Training with a horse takes time, commitment and dedication. Some kids take beginners’ lessons and realize riding isn’t for them, and that’s OK. “Horseback riding has a lot to do about the feel of it – that comfort and trust you have with the horse,” Mathias said. “If it’s not there, then it’s not there. It’s not something you can
force. But we welcome families who want to get a taste for riding.” Traditionally, Mathias hosts summer horse camps as a way to introduce new riders to the culture of horse riding. But as she is expecting her first child in June, this year’s camps have been put on hiatus. She hopes to squeeze in at least one camp around the end of August or early September. Tiger Challenge to help Brentwood’s PAL JUSTIN LAFFERTY
O
ne Brentwood martial arts studio will fight for good later this month when it
hosts an event with the city’s police department. The Brentwood Police Activities League (PAL) Tigers Challenge, hosted by Twin Tigers Academy of Self-Defense, will bring Bay Area martial arts schools to East County to help the PD’s nonprofit organization. PAL works to create a positive relationship between kids and cops, providing alternatives to a life of crime by facilitating sports such as bowling and golf. Brentwood PD Officer Roger Wilson, who heads up Brentwood’s PAL, has been instrumental in making the Tigers Challenge a possibility. The tournament is slated for Saturday, April 28 at Liberty High School, 850 Second St. Registration starts at 8 a.m. The first-timers’ tournament starts at 9:30 a.m. and the main event kicks off at 10 a.m. Participants can also register at www. active.com. Tickets are $5 for adults and kids older than 5. Admission is free for seniors over 65 and kids 5 or under. The Tiger Challenge will feature several styles of self defense – karate, kung fu

He’d like to see youngsters catch a glimpse of the importance of community service. “I wanted to do something for the community and I wanted to help PAL with

Volkssport to lead Diablo walks
L
ocals are invited to experience stunning spring wildflower displays and spectacular vistas
on the northern slopes of Mt. Diablo on the weekend of May 12-13 with members of the Sacramento Walking Sticks Volkssport Club. The walks begin at Clayton Community Park, 7411 Marsh Creed Road in Clayton. Registration runs from 9 a.m. to noon on both days; the walks will be finished by 3:30 p.m. Participants who want “volkswalk credit” pay $3 per walk; otherwise, the walks are free. Water and restrooms are available at the registration point. Walkers should bring enough water to avoid dehydration. Both walks require you to drive to a remote start and walk into the park unless you want to add an extra 2K (1.2 miles) onto each by walking instead to the start. The first walk goes up Donner Canyon Road on an all-dirt trail at an easy grade and then joins the steep, narrow and sometimes slippery Falls Trail. The 5K (3.1 miles) route is rated 2C; the 10K (6.2 miles) route is rated 3C. The second walk explores Mt. Diablo’s Mitchell Canyon. The 5K (3.1 miles) walk is an easy grade rated 1B; the 10K (6.2 miles) walk is a moderate grade rated 2B. These routes are not recommended for people in wheelchairs; only jogger strollers would be able to negoti-

ate the Mitchell Canyon walk. Dogs are not allowed in Mt. Diablo State Park. Walkers are encouraged to bring sack lunches. Following the walks, participants can walk the streets of the quaint town of Clayton and enjoy its shops and restaurants. Volkssport membership is not required, but dues are only $8 for individuals, $14 for families and $5 for seniors (55 and over). In addition to weekend walks, the club offers group walks on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings plus Wednesday evenings. The walks are fun and the people are friendly. It’s excellent exercise, good for your body and soul, and guaranteed to expose you to places you’d never find on your own. The Sacramento Walking Sticks meet the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the SMUD Headquarters Building in the Conference Center, 6201 S St. in Sacramento.

Building from page 1B “Legos are probably one of the greatest toys of all time,” said Bricks 4 Kids co-owner Mike Shirk. “Kids get to build whatever they want whether they’re working from a kit or just creating as they go. The things the kids come up with here are really impressive.” Bricks 4 Kids, which Shirk opened with wife Jenny last July, has become a go-to place for birthday parties and recreational play, and this summer the Shirks are expanding their summer camp program to welcome builders of all levels. Camps run in five-day increments, and each session is three hours long. Camps cost $30 per day or $150 for the entire week. In honor of the upcoming Olympic Games, Bricks 4 Kidz will host the 2012 Brick Olympics, in which campers will build models of sports featured in the summer games, such as soccer, basketball, cycling and gymnastics. Competitors’ models will be scored and medals will be award to the best builders. For the adventurous types, Extreme Expedition Camp offers builders the thrill of creating lavish landscapes as they learn about geography and nature. In Animal “Grassology” Camp, builders construct animal models and learn about animal biology and habitats. “Each camp follows its own lesson plan, so the kids are doing more than building and playing with the bricks,” Mike said. “If the kids are building an animal, they’ll learn about where it lives, what it likes to eat and how big it gets in real life. If the project is building a lawnmower, the kids learn a little bit about the science and history of how and why the first lawnmower was created.” Building a lawnmower could be one of the projects in the Robotics Camp, which is back by popular demand. Divided into groups based on age, kids spend the afternoon working with gears and motors. Older, more experienced campers get to play with the Mindstorm NXT Robotics kits, which guide kids through the process of building and programming a Lego robot. Though Legos are gender neutral, they’re stereotypically considered a boy’s toy. Bricks 4 Kidz is out to change that misconception with Bricks 4 Girlz Camp, a girls-only program that introduces girls to the art of Legos. Campers build houses and other sets for Legos’ new cast of female characters, marketed to encourage girls to build and

They realize Legos aren’t just for boys.” Throughout the summer, Bricks 4 Kidz will continue to offer drop-in play times, which costs $5 per child, and Kidz Night Out on Fridays, when parents drop their builders at Bricks 4 Kidz from 6 to 10 p.m. for $20 per child. “Children with allergies tend to have overly sensitized immune systems that react to certain airborne substances called ‘triggers,’” said Dr. Susan Adham, a pediatrician affiliated with Sutter Delta Medical Center and Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation. “One of the best ways to help your child’s allergies is to avoid triggers.” Typical triggers for seasonal allergies include pollen, mold or dust. When a child’s immune system reacts to these triggers, it releases a chemical called histamine that causes allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, a runny nose and sneezing. Can hypoallergenic pets help relieve your child’s allergies? According to Adham,

they probably will not: “Pet allergies – usually related to a dog or a cat – are triggered by a protein found in your pet’s skin flakes known as dander. Because even hypoallergenic dogs and cats have skin, they can cause allergies, whether they have short fur, no fur or nonshedding fur. How much dander a pet sheds can vary by breed and even between animals of the same breed, so it’s important to ‘try out’ a potential pet around your child to see how she or he will react.” There are things you can do to alleviate your child’s allergies. Consider keeping your child’s bedroom a no-pet zone so that dander doesn’t accumulate, and be sure to use a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air filter.
