Food volunteers Catch of the day need new home R by Aly Brown Staff Writer

Volunteers for the Delta Christian Community (DCC) Food Pantry have made a promise to the people they feed each week – they will serve food with or without a roof over their heads, though preferably the former. Every Tuesday, the volunteers bring staples to the needy in Byron, Knightsen and Bethel Island. They begin in Byron and open their doors by 9 a.m., setting up the food like a store for people to pick and choose. By 10 a.m., they set up in Knightsen, and by 11:30 or noon, they land in Bethel Island. It’s a system that has worked well for the last seven years with the help of many volunteers, who move efficiently to get the job done. But due to the need for extensive renovations, the garden club building in Knightsen – which the group uses for its largest distribution – is no longer available. And the group is looking for some help in the form of a new facility. “We need someone in Knightsen to open their doors,” said Jenny Rodrigues, DCC Food Pantry coordinator. Rodrigues said they will bring the food and set up shop on an empty blacktop if they have to, but since many recipients are elderly or disabled, it will be more difficult. The winter months also bring harsher weather and more hungry families, whose breadwinners are out of farmhand work during that time.

Delta tunnels opponents set to file suit Staff Writer

The Save the California Delta Alliance (STCDA) has announced plans to block the California Department of Water Resources’ (CDWR) latest move to push forward with Gov. Jerry Brown’s twin-tunnels project. On July 21, a Notice of Determination, which certifies the environmental impact report (EIR), was released by the CDWR, signaling the department’s intent to proceed with the tunnels plan. According to Michael Brodsky, attorney for the STCDA, the group plans to file litigation in objection to the final EIR’s certification. “We have 30 days to file our suit challenging the EIR and 60 days to file our suit challenging the financing plan for the tunnels,” said

“ “It isn’t too late; we can and we will win this fight.

Michael Brodsky STCDA attorney Brodsky. The tunnels project, also known as California WaterFix, proposes two tunnels, each 40 feet in diameter, be buried 150 feet below the Delta’s islands and sloughs. The tunnels would draw water from the Sacramento River near Hood (about 20 miles south of Sacramento) and deliver the water to canals near Tracy, which carry Delta water south to the central valley farms and Southern California cities. The WaterFix project claims the plan’s goal is to bolster re-

gional self-sufficiency in water supplies, reduce reliance on the Delta, recover native fish populations and bring reliability, restoration and resilience to California’s water supply. But opponents of the project feel differently. “These tunnels would deprive the Delta of its fresh water source and suspend the Delta in a chronic state of drought,” said STCDA member Frank Morgan. “Not only that, but construction of the tunnels would take 11 years or more, and with all the noise, vibration and blockage of waterways, we will lose a significant amount of our recreational business.” Carl Wenske, STCDA member and manager of Bullfrog Marina, agrees. “The tunnel construction route runs under

Couple returns to the scene of their wedding reception Celebrating 54th anniversary at Cap’s by Aly Brown Staff Writer

Carol and James Ligon recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary at Cap’s Oak Street Bar & Grill, the same place where they held their wedding reception (right) on July 21, 1963, when it was the Brentwood Masonic Lodge.

For Carol and James Ligon, a recent dinner at Cap’s Oak Street Bar & Grill was a case of déjà vu. The Brentwood couple decided to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary at the restaurant, which was once the Masonic Lodge and the site of their wedding reception in 1963. “The kitchen is still in the same place,” Carol said of her visit to Cap’s on July 21. She also remembered the building as a place where she participated in Rainbow Girls ceremonies. Following in the footsteps of her parents and grandparents, Brentwood native Carol graduated from Liberty High School in 1962. James also attended Liberty and graduated in 1957. They met at the town’s local hangout at the time – an A&W that once stood at the corner of Oak Street and Brentwood Boulevard near where La Costa is now. James, then 20, was home visiting from college when he saw 16-year-old Carol Benn from across the crowd. “It was love at first sight,” he recalled. Prior to tying the knot, the couple spent some time apart, as James was in the military and Carol went off to Chico State. But they kept in touch

Road sign to warn of fire service shortage by Kyle Szymanski

The East County Voters for Equal Protection, a citizens’ action committee, is collecting funds to put a sign on Vasco Road to warn residents of the area’s fire-service shortage.

Staff Writer

Motorists entering Brentwood on a stretch of Vasco Road may soon be reminded of the area’s fire-service shortage. The East County Voters for Equal Protection (ECV), a citizens’ action committee formed to address the unequal funding of fire and EMS in East County, is collecting funds to place a sign on a patch of private property along Vasco Road, south of Camino Diablo, warning residents of the danger posed by the limited staffing levels. The financially strapped East Contra Costa Fire Protection District, which dropped from four to three stations in July, is responsible for the protection of 110,000 residents and 249 square miles of property in the cities of Brentwood and Oakley, as well as the unincorporated areas of Bethel Island, Byron, Discovery Bay, Knightsen and Marsh CreekMorgan Territory. “We basically are trying to get a little bit of information there that says, ‘Hey, you are at risk when you drive into this area,’” said Bryan Scott, co-chair of the organization. An early prototype of the sign is displayed above, complete with links to more information on the subject. Joe Young, a district board member, said he thinks the sign could be beneficial

Photo courtesy of the East County Voters for Equal Protection

if it portrays the right message. “If the sign provides accurate information and realistic solutions and does not resort to scare tactics, it may be helpful,” Young said. “Otherwise, it will probably further polarize the issue and inhibit realistic solutions.” ECV has already collected about half of the $1,770 needed to place the sign on the private property for six months, said Scott, who estimates the warning will stand 5 feet high by 8 feet wide. The late Peggy Hart, a former Brentwood resident who died in March, first approached Scott with the idea last February. Scott said the idea was tabled for

several months, but quickly gained momentum when it was brought up with a small group of locals and information on the effort was emailed to 14 of the group’s members, nine of whom have submitted funds to the cause. “We consider it part of a public education program,” Scott said. “Readership of newspapers is on a steep decline, and social media doesn’t explain complex issues very well, so we need to reach out to the public and let them know that, for long stretches of time, we have no fire department,” Scott said. The potentially dangerous state of the district is on full display in the district’s monthly statistics. In June, the

district’s final month with four stations, there were nine times – totaling 4 hours and 18 minutes – when a call came in and no engines were available to respond. The district’s financial problems stem almost entirely from the propertytax allocation set by Proposition 13 in 1978, when volunteer departments were sufficient to cover East County. The district’s property-tax allocation – 7 percent of the 1 percent ad valorem property tax – is the lowest of all county fire agencies. Making matters worse, residents shot down the district’s attempts to pass a revenue-generating parcel tax in 2012, a benefit assessment in 2015 and an effort by the cities of Brentwood and Oakley to get utility-users taxes approved in 2016. Earlier this year, Assemblymember Jim Frazier introduced two assembly bills, AB 898 and 899, calling for the annual reallocation of $10.5 million from the East Bay Regional Park District to the fire district, but the status of those two bills is uncertain. “It doesn’t appear that any of our elected leaders are doing anything to improve funding for the fire district,” Scott said. Scott said as soon as the group gathers the remaining $800, the sign will go up. Anyone interested in donating to the cause can mail funds to 1300 Crescent Dr., in Brentwood. The congregation at Brentwood United Methodist Church is planning a series of events marking the church’s 150th anniversary.

Celebrating 150 years of faith, community service by Amy Schrader Correspondent

The mood at Brentwood United Methodist Church is joyous, spirited and some would even say blessed. The church is celebrating 150 years of faith and service to the Brentwood community. “We started with a small group of faithful people, who first met in homes and schools and were taken care of by circuit rider preachers,” said JoAnn Funk, who is part of a planning team, which will organize events to celebrate the milestone. “Then, the

congregation bought the land the church now sits on for $5 in gold coins and pledged to build the sanctuary that is still there today, 150 years later.” According to a book written by Vernon C. Noble, on June 3, 1884, the deed for the land stated, “should the property ever cease to be used for a place of worship, ownership would revert to the previous owners and his successors.” At the time of the church’s founding, Brentwood was very much a farming area. “The railroad had not yet come to see Celebrating page 14A

Cars broken into at Brentwood Hampton Inn The Brentwood Police Department is continuing its investigation into the early morning break-in at the Hampton Inn on Brentwood Boulevard. On July 21, at 4 a.m., officers responded to a call to investigate reports that a guest’s car had been broken into. When officers arrived, they discovered a total of 17 vehicles had been compromised, most with broken windows. Some physical evidence was recovered, according to Lt. Walter O’Grodnick.

Cap’s from page 4A through letters. The day they wed was celebrated with a crowd of 400 people, which made up nearly a quarter of the entire town at that time. The wedding ceremony was held at what was once the First Missionary Baptist Church on McClarren Road, with the guests following them to the historic Masonic Lodge. Carol’s mother, who owned The Knit and Stitch Shop – now Rake Salon next door to the Brentwood Press building – prepared food for the entire wedding crowd, alongside her knitting-group friends. A change of the times and community interests saw the building converted, even though it still has many of the same features from when it was built in 1920. If the walls could share their tales, they would speak of a bygone time when freemasonry was on the rise in the U.S., accruing membership dues that allowed the fraternity to build temples on grand scales, such as the building seen at the corner of Oak and 2nd streets. While other masonic lodges closed during the Great Depression, Brentwood’s own managed to stay open for a bit longer, though it wouldn’t last forever. The temple hall eventually fell into disuse and remained vacant shortly before it was transformed into a restaurant in 1995 by Steve Capozzo, Cap’s owner. After the couple’s nuptials, they jetted off to Hawaii for their honeymoon before relocating to Japan, where James was stationed as a sergeant in Tokyo. It was there the first of their two daughters was born. Upon returning to California with a 9-week-old baby, James worked for U.S. Steel in both Pittsburg and San Francisco, before entering the seminary at California Baptist where

A few hours later, an overnight guest reported that their vehicle had been stolen. The incident was later reported to part of a string of auto burglaries that occurred in Livermore on the same date, after the Brentwood incident. There are no suspects currently, but the Brentwood Police Department is continuing to work with the Livermore Police Department on the investigation. Anyone with information should call the police department at 925-634-6911. he obtained a master’s in theology and biblical languages. His ministry and later his role with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department brought the family to Waterford and Modesto. Carol, who graduated with a master’s degree from the University of the Pacific, was a teacher in Waterford and became a principal and the director of curriculum and staff development in Modesto. For her work beyond graduation, the Liberty Union High School District named her a graduate of distinction in 2007. About seven years ago, the couple felt the call to come home and moved into a Brentwood that had vastly grown in size, but hadn’t changed in charm. “A huge growth took place while we were gone,” said James. “But being back (around old friends) is like being back in the old-time Brentwood.” Now, as a retired couple, the two are simply enjoying their golden years. Carol is a volunteer assistant manager and art instructor for the Delta Art Gallery, and James has turned to the garden to utilize his green thumb and make their home flourish with foliage. They’re both involved with Golden Hills Community Church. “We just enjoy living in our home and living here in Brentwood. It’s very nostalgic,” said Carol. As for advice for newlyweds, they said being strong Christians with biblical principles and putting God first in their lives has created a foundation for a healthy marriage. But James added a bonus tip for the fellas. “Husbands need to learn from day one how to say, ‘Yes, dear,’” he said.

If you are thinking of selling an investment property and you’ve heard that you can delay paying income tax on the gains by buying another investment property, this article is for you. This is called a 1031 exchange. In years past, you could only sell and then buy “similar” properties. For example, if you were selling a single-family home that you were renting out, you had to buy another single-family home, not a condo or commercial building. But now the rules have been expanded so that as long as you are selling some kind of investment property and buying another type of investment property, it’s probably OK. There are rules to this that must be followed. Most importantly, you have to set up the exchange BEFORE you close escrow on the first property. This means selecting a qualified intermediary who will step in and take title of the property you are buying, meaning they receive the proceeds of the sale, and then they will purchase the next property for you, and then that property is

put back into your name. This way you never have what’s called “constructive receipt”’ of any of the proceeds. From the time the escrow closes on the first property, you will have 45 calendar days to identify the replacement property (you can even identify more than one property in case there is a problem). Then you will have up to 180 days to close escrow on the replacement property/properties. It can be less than 180 days if you sell the first property late in the year. There are other rules about the amount of debt you have on each and there is even a situation where you can buy first, and then sell, called a reverse exchange. I AM NOT A TAX EXPERT OR 1031 EXPERT SO CONSULT ONE FOR YOUR SITUATION. Historic restaurant serves up new ownership The new owners of Antioch’s popular Red Caboose restaurant are serving up classic dishes, such as their popular burger, along with a few new surprises.

by Amy Schrader Correspondent

A historic landmark restaurant in Antioch is under new ownership, bringing something new and delicious to lunch and dinner in East County. Last December, when Brentwood resident Mike Shiner purchased The Red Caboose, he knew he wanted to build up the popular landmark by giving it a new look and new menu items, but still wanted to deliver the classic dishes the restaurant was well known for. “We consider ourselves a hidden gem,” said Shiner. “We go out of our way to make some of the best steaks, burgers and chicken at an affordable price, and our goal is to provide top-notch service and make your experience so enjoyable, you want to keep coming back.” The transfer of ownership happened after Shiner’s daughter, Jennifer, who is currently the restaurant’s manager, told her dad about a Craigslist ad, featuring a restaurant for sale. “I thought I knew of every bar and restaurant in the area, but I had never heard of The Caboose,” said Shiner. “I called the owners and went down to see the place and thought it had a lot of potential.” Since he took control of The Red Ca-

boose on Dec. 1, Shiner has made a few changes, including adding new items to the menu and renovating the patio area. While the restaurant was originally known for its steaks, it now carries fresh cod for the Friday fish and chips special and serves salads topped with handmade croutons. The kitchen also creates many homemade dressings. One of the most popular new menu items is the buffalo blue cheese chicken sandwich. “With the Friday special, fresh fish and chips for lunch and fresh salmon for dinner, we can’t go wrong,” said Shiner.

Besides a delicious menu, customers visit The Red Caboose for the gorgeous scenery. The outdoor seating portion has beautiful views of an inlet from the San Joaquin River, which winds itself right up to the patio. Diners are occasionally visited by river otters, which have made the inlet their home. “We’re not trying to take away from the charm that has been The Red Caboose for so many years; we’re just trying to update the overall look,” said Shiner. The Red Caboose was originally a beer bar called The Ramp, which opened in 1969. It became The Red Caboose in 1983, when

W

owner Jim Boccio bought his wife an actual red caboose train for her birthday and attached it to the building. Since then, guests have enjoyed the three separate areas of the restaurant – each with different themes. Diners can eat inside the caboose, which is filled with pictures one would see when traveling by train through the countryside. The main area, where the bar is located, is a dining room and a place where guests can watch the game on one of the restaurant’s five bigscreen TVs, while relaxing at a table or on one of two comfortable leather couches. Guests can also enjoy their dinner and a scenic view on the patio area. “I love The Red Caboose,” said Antioch resident J.R. Wilson. “I like its location in the old shipyard, which gives it a cool kind of feel. Every time I have eaten there, their staff has been very polite. It’s a hidden treasure.” The Red Caboose, located at 210 Fulton Shipyard Road, in Antioch, takes reservations and their updated patio is a perfect spot for parties, memorials, motorcycle runs and other group events. By fostering a mindset that allows you to welcome new opportunities into your life, you’ll be rewarded with experiences that help you clarify your personal preferences and needs while gaining a better understanding of which changes will be necessary to achieve your goals. When we are experiencing an unpleasant emotion, we must first acknowledge and accept where we are. National Night Out builds community by Amy Schrader Correspondent

Socialize with neighbors, build community awareness and get to know local law enforcement during this year’s National Night Out, held the evening of Aug. 1. National Night Out, coined as ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime,’ encourages residents across the country to host block parties, cookouts and neighborhood gatherings to enhance relationships between neighbors and law enforcement, while building a sense of community. Those who host events are encouraged to call their local police department, which will send a representative to visit the gatherings to further heighten crime prevention and send a message to criminals, letting them know the neighborhoods are strong, organized and support combating crime. “We would like to see every neighborhood participate in this event,” said Michele Keady, Brentwood Police Department senior community services officer. “It creates a cohesiveness in our community and strengthens the relationship between the community and the police department.” The Brentwood Police Department is adding an additional element this year. It is asking all residents to tie a blue ribbon around their mailbox, front yard trees or anywhere visible from the street. “This simple gesture will signify their support of the partnership between the community and the Brentwood Police Department,” said Keady. Oakley and Discovery Bay are also inviting local residents who host neighborhood events to contact local police departments to coordinate a visit. “National Night Out is a great opportunity for neighbors to meet and network,”

said Oakley Mayor Sue Higgins. “When your neighbors put a face to a home and to your vehicles, it helps each of us in being able to identify a stranger. It can also make the surroundings safer knowing your neighbors, even if it’s a brief introduction.” The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office is ready to partner with local residents in Discovery Bay to make neighborhoods a safer and better place to live. “The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office will stop by some neighborhoods to interact with residents and share crimeprevention tips,” said Tony Fontenot, sheriff’s specialist. “These events are fun, effective and inexpensive ways to interact with your neighbors and law enforcement, while strengthening those relationships and learning about crime prevention.” Brentwood residents who are planning to host a National Night Out gathering and would like local law enforcement or city council representatives to visit can contact Michele Keady at 925-809-7780 or email mkeady@ brentwoodca.gov. Oakley residents can contact Marisa Aguilar at 925-625-8854 or email aguilar@ci.oakley.ca.us and Discovery Bay residents can contact Sheriff’s Specialist Tony Fontenot at afont@so.cccounty.us. Celebrating

Your Loved One Has Passed and You are the Trustee... Now What? by Joan Grimes, Esq.

Have you recently been named as successor trustee? Or will you be named as a successor trustee for a trust in the future? Here is a checklist to get you started. It is important to note that this checklist is not exhaustive as all trusts are different. 1. Find the trust and read it (And yes … you need to read the whole thing). Each trust is different so it is important to know what your trust says. 2. Locate the assets. Generally, there will be various bank accounts and brokerage accounts, and it is important for you to identify the assets so you can monitor them. SUPER IMPORTANT: Do not distribute any assets to any of the beneficiaries until the very, very, very end! Before distribution can occur, all of the assets need to be identified, final expenses and debts must be paid and all potential or future liabilities must be calculated. Only then may the trustee distribute the remaining assets according to the terms of the trust. 3. Determine the liabilities If you have become the successor trustee because the previous trustee has become incapacitated, then your ongoing duty is generally to manage everything for the incapacitated person. If you have become the successor trustee following the death of a previous trustee, then you will need to start tracking all expenses. 4. Change title to reflect the death or incapacity of the prior trustee and your role as successor trustee. This is an extremely important step because you need to let third parties know that you have the authority to act on behalf of the trust as trustee. 5. Gather all personal records, including checkbooks and tax returns from the last three years. 6. Secure the assets and remove all valuable

personal items from the residence and place of business. 7. Forwarded all mail to your address. 8. Cancel charge accounts, credit cards and newspaper, magazine subscriptions, Internet and cable TV, and see if they will offer you any refunds. 9. If you have access to a safety deposit box with the decedent, do not remove the contents. The box should be inventoried in the presence of a bank officer and only then should the contents be removed. 10. Contact social security and the VA, if applicable. Make sure to hold any social security payments received after the date of death. Don’t close a bank account into which automatic deposits may have been paid for a while. This list is not comprehensive nor is it necessarily “in order”. Further, while this information may be helpful in understanding your role, it does not substitute for legal advice. In addition to these steps, there are legal documents, notices and requirements that must be filed following the death of a trustee even though they have a trust. A meeting with the lawyer does not need to happen immediately upon the death, but ideally should within two to four weeks of the passing. I meet with families every day in our Brentwood and Walnut Creek offices and offer free, 30-minute consultations for all new clients. S. Corwin was the church’s first appointed leader, and when its new location in Brentwood was dedicated in September 1887, Reverend J.E. Wickes led services. Over the course of 150 years, United Methodist has been an integral part of the community, and the original structure has undergone many changes, including the addition of a social hall and an education wing. Technology upgrades were also added, including projection screens used to enhance worship services. Besides physical changes, the church has been used by many groups in the past and present. “In addition to worship at the church, it has been the place of many weddings, baby showers, luncheons by local organizations, memorial services and home to Cub Scout meetings,” said Black. “When the high school burned in 1963, classes were held in the church’s back classrooms.” Today, Pastor Hyesung Lee, who currently leads the church, is traveling in Great Britain to retrace the steps of John Wesley, the father of Methodism. Hyesung will return in time to attend the celebrations to commemorate 150 years. On Sunday, Aug. 13, the church plans to have a dramatic portrayal of John Wesley during services. Protecting livestock from the elements Although people often have the means to escape inclement weather, animals are at the mercy of their caregivers, and protecting animals during extreme weather is not restricted to domesticated pets. Those who have livestock on their properties must recognize these animals will need various levels of care. Animals such as chickens, cattle, goats and llamas can be adversely affected by extreme weather.

Suitable shelter One of the best ways to safeguard livestock from extreme weather is to ensure they have a place to escape the elements. Animals can get sunburned and may overheat, so make sure shelters can block the sun’s rays on hot days, while also allowing air to circulate through the dwelling.

He is also a little cuddle bug. He looks forward to his walks and car rides. Smokie is potty-pad trained in the house and also kennel-trained at night, when it’s bedtime. Smokie is ready for a loving family, who will spend time with him and give him the love he deserves. ECCFPD improving transparency, education, outreach and communication My name is Brian Helmick, and I am the new fire chief of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD). In my first two months as fire chief of ECCFPD, I have met with elected officials, residents, community organizations and a variety of other community stakeuest holders regarding comment the state of our fire district. I will be the first to admit there are a lot of opinions and confusion throughout the district’s boundaries as to the state of the district and how the district should begin to address its current complex situation. Different opinions are expected, but the confusion is a shortfall of the fire district not providing the community with the information it needs to develop educated opinions. There is no doubt the district has been challenged in providing abundant community outreach due to staffing levels and funding obstacles. Sadly, the current debate has veered off course, causing more confusion. This shortfall has been recognized and is being ad-

G

dressed as quickly as possible. As the district works to build a solid sustainable foundation, I plan to release several notices highlighting aspects of the fire district. These notices are intended to inform the community by highlighting the realities it will be facing as we continue to build a solid foundation. I believe in complete transparency, strong communications, sharing ideas, constructive debates that make the organization stronger and providing information as soon as possible after request(s). It is my hope over time the community will better understand the current struggles and challenges that constrict the district’s administration, emergency operations, financial position, staff retention and service level adequacy compared to national standards and other fire districts within Contra Costa County. As a kickoff to this effort, the district recreated and built a new website, www.eccfpd. org. The website now provides greater ease of use along with the ability to stream and watch videos of our district board meetings (usually the first Monday of each month). The district

will also provide information that is relevant to our community service. In addition to rebuilding the website, the district has formed an internal team – ECCFPD Public Information Officers Committee – consisting of firefighters who will work to increase the number of informative social-media posts on the district’s Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter pages to provide timely information. Meanwhile, our battalion chiefs have been given more responsibility for district communications, so the community quickly receives information regarding major emergencies. It is my hope and goal, that through improved leadership on my part, the district can begin to assist in the process to have an engaged and well-informed community. By doing this, we will all begin to clearly understand the district’s challenges and can better support ECCFPD. Supporting the district is critical, because ECCFPD provides essential, lifesaving services and is a vital community organization. Editor: We are writing this letter to the City of Brentwood to express our strong opposition to the rezoning proposal made by the owners of the Deer Ridge and Shadow Lakes golf courses. It is our belief that rezoning portions of both courses will negatively impact our property values, add congestion and traffic to our already busy streets and increase the demand on our severely strained first responders (EMS). Additionally, the proposed location of the Deer Ridge facility is very close to Krey Elementary and literally in the backyard of several residents. The middle of a residential neighborhood is no place for a 24/7 operation. A proposed 13-acre, multibuilding facility up to three stories high has no place in the middle of a residential neighborhood. We do not feel it is fair for our community and neighborhood to bail out SunCoast Properties for their bad investment and poor business decisions. By rezoning and letting them sell parcels to a developer, they stand to make millions at the cost of our property values. A large senior living facility will impact the value of our homes, as no one will want to look at 13 acres of multilevel buildings in the middle of our serene neighborhood. We purchased these home in a golfcourse community and many paid a hefty premium to be on the golf course. The openness and beauty of our neighborhood

This can be accomplished by becoming familiar with ECCFPD’s website, master plan and social media channels and by attending district meetings. The district hosts monthly board meetings that can be streamed, usually at 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month; finance meetings, usually the second Monday at 3 p.m.; and public education and outreach meetings, usually on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. All past and upcoming meeting agendas are available on the district’s new website. Please visit the district’s website at www. eccfpd.org, Facebook (East Contra Costa Fire Protection District), Instagram (@east_ contra_costa_fire), YouTube (East Contra Costa Fire Protection District) and Twitter (TBA) pages for more information. – the very things that draw people to want to live here – are in jeopardy with the course owner’s current proposal. Bottom line, the homeowners will suffer and lose equity if the rezone occurs, and it will all be due to the bailout of a company that made a bad investment and poor business decisions. If you wish to join our efforts in opposing this rezoning proposal, there are a number of ways to help and voice your opinion. Fireworks enforcement sees some success

Editor: I’ve been the chief of police for Oakley for several July 4 holidays. In my first year, 2005, I was taken off guard by the amount of illegal firework activity that occurred. Over the ensuing years, we employed several different strategies in response to the July 4 holiday – from zero tolerance to a hands-off approach and everything in between. For the most part, our past efforts were unsuccessful at curbing the illegal activity. This year, we tried a new strategy. Many of you provided information on specific locations where firework activity occurred in recent years. In advance of the July 4 holiday,

our officers visited many of those locations. Others received letters asking them to forgo their fireworks this year. In addition to the police department, our code-enforcement team was out assuring weeds and other hazards were abated prior to the holiday. The city provided yard signs reminding residents that fireworks have an adverse effect on some veterans and pets. On July 4, we had extra staff patrolling the streets. They focused their efforts on those who had been previously warned and those who were ‘the worst of the worst,’ with respect to the size and amount of fireworks. Over a three-hour period, our officers responded to several hundred fireworksrelated calls. They seized a large quantity of illegal fireworks and issued several citations. If found guilty, the recipients of those citations will be looking at fines in the neighborhood of $1,000. The reports have been mixed, depending on what area of the city you live in. Some residents reported the firework activity was the same as last year. Other neighborhoods reported a reduction in activity. Most importantly, the fire department reported no firework-related fires or injuries in Oakley. This is an improvement over last year. For those who curtailed your activity this year, on behalf of the City of Oakley, the police department and your community, thank you! We will continue our efforts in this area. Chris Thorsen Oakley chief of police

For trio of brothers running is a family affair by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

When Brentwood brothers Chase, Cody and Hunter Aldridge began running with their father, it was just for fun. But now, their talent and competitive spirit are earning them national acclaim. Chase and Cody recently qualified for the USA Track and Field (USATF) Olympic Nationals in Kansas after impressive performances at the USATF Regional Track and Field Championships in Cupertino. “To qualify for the USATF nationals in this area of the country is pretty tough, because California has a lot of fast runners,” said Shanyn Aldridge, mother of the 8-, 11- and 14-year-old boys. Eight-year-old Chase won the 1500-meter race in 5:43 in Cupertino, while Cody, 11, nabbed third in the 3000-meter event in 11:5. Hunter, 14, didn’t qualify for a national event, but gave it a noble effort in the 800- and 1500-meter races in his division, which forced him to race against 15 and 16 year olds. Hunter finished the 1500 meters in 4:37 and the 800 meters in 2:15. The win in Cupertino was especially rewarding for Chase, who cut 2 minutes from his time in the 1500 this year, largely due to increased training over the last 12 months and a unique breakaway move. “He follows all the kids, and on the very last 100 meters, he uses a kick to beat them,” Shanyn said. “We tell him he has to watch out, because now (his

competitors) know what he does.” Chase was just pleased to cross the finish line first. “I was surprised when I won,” he said. Cody’s third-place finish was also notable, as he has only run the 3000-meter race twice before. He admittedly entered the race hoping for a top-five finish or a personal record. “I like that I was able to make it this far,” Cody said. Although the brothers opted to spend some extra time in Michigan visiting their grandmother instead of making the trip to Kansas, the trio hasn’t stopped training in hopes of raking in more achievements. The boys and their dad run daily and recently took part in a 5k this summer. They’ve been gearing up for another on July 29. Even after the family returns to Brentwood, the boys’ training will continue through the Delta Limitless running club. They will also trek down Balfour Road with their father. “A lot of times, people see them because they run down Balfour Road, and people honk,” Shanyn said. “People recognize them.” The three boys, who have competed in track meets nearly every Saturday since January, will soon turn their attention to cross-country, which is likely to keep them busy until December. Their target in that sport is to reach nationals in Florida. “Who doesn’t want to go to Florida in December?” Shanyn said.

West Coast Soccer Club shines in showcase The West Coast Soccer Club’s Wildkatz competed in the prestigious Davis Legacy College Showcase earlier this month in Davis. The Wildkatz were coming off a month-long summer break, but took to the pitch ready to play. First up was a match against the Southern Californiabased CDA FC Slammers. Within minutes, the Slammers were able to score. But the Wildkatz answered with a goal of their own by Katie Strong, and the game was tied 1-1 early in play. The Slammers scored again early in the second half, and again the Wildkatz answered with a goal, tying the game. Despite outshooting the Slammers 14-4, the Wildkatz were unable to score again. Late in the game, the Slammers scored, ending the game 3-2. The second game of the tournament found the Wildkatz facing the top 05 girls’ team in Northern California, the Placer United Gold. With goals by Strong and Emma Colmenero early in play, the Wildkatz led Placer 2-0. The girls’ defence held Placer scoreless until close to the end of the game, but the Wildkatz took the win 2-1, giving Placer, who has been playing up in

Also in day two of tournament play, the Wildkatz met the Folsom Lake Earthquakes. Folsom was able to score early in the game, but the Wildkatz answered with four goals in the first half by Cameron Silva, Karlee Lywandowsky, Strong and Colmenero. The Wildkatz defense held Folsom scoreless in the second half of play and the offense scored again with a

goal by Zusette Zamora to end the game with a 5-1 win, securing their spot in semifinals. In the semifinals match, the Wildkatz faced the Rocklin Blues FC, and the match was physical from the start. The Wildkatz scored early in the game to lead 1-0 during the first half. In the second half, the Blues were able to score after a penalty kick to tie the game at one. The Wildkatz answered with another goal, and the game ended with a win and trip to the

championship for the Wildkatz. In the championship match, the Wildkatz faced Placer United again. The game was evenly matched from the start. Late in the first half, Placer scored on a long, high ball and the Wildkatz were down 1-0 at the half. In the second half of play, Jazmine Staples took a great pass from Colmenero, sprinted past all the Placer defenders and sent the ball to the back of the net, tying the match 1-1. The second half ended in a draw, and the game went into two 5-minute overtime periods. Despite many shots on goal by the Wildkatz, the overtime period ended and the game went to penalty kicks. Both teams were evenly matched in penalty kicks, but Placer was able to make a shot the Wildkatz could not answer, giving the match and championship to Placer. “The girls did amazing,” said coach Troy Dayak. “We played with fewer players than any other team, and we outplayed them all – all the way to the last whistle.” Next up for the Wildkatz is widely known San Diego Surf Cup, from Aug. 4 to 7, where they will face teams from around the U.S. – Courtesy of the West Coast Soccer Club

The mental game As this piece goes to press, more than 4,000 of the world’s best youth bowlers will be returning from two weeks of the highest level of competition available – the USBC Junior Gold Championships, held this year in Cleveland. A select few will Kegler’s rise to the occasion, orner most will have an average performance and a few will have a tough time of it. But the one thing we can’t coach is the mental game. The mental game is a mindset – a collection of attitudes focusing on a specific task or set of tasks to a desired result or conclusion. A few months ago, in Reno at the Pepsi Nationals (a warm-up competition for Junior Gold), a gathering of elite national coaches and I were sitting together in the gallery above lanes 40 and 41 at the National Stadium, watching the U20 ladies competition and taking notes. So we were simply critiquing their attention to necessary adjustments and the success or failure of those adjustments. We were fairly quiet, but a few of our comments were overheard by a parent a couple of rows below us. She turned and said, “My daughter is the young lady in blue on 39. What do you see?” Four of us made a similar written comment about her difficulties, but everybody turned to me and said, “Do you want to take this one?” It’s nice to have friends. “Your daughter is not engaged with her game,” I said. “Explain,” she replied. I asked her to watch her daughter after the next frame and tell me what she saw. The player completed her frame and left her pair to go visit four lanes away. When I pointed this out to her mother, she said she was just being social. Granted, she was being social, but she wasn’t engaged in her game. That was the root of her mediocre performance. If you’re in a competitive environment, you must stay focused on the task at hand, which is frame by frame and shot by shot. Judge awards court costs to BUSD A U.S. district court judge has awarded the Brentwood Union School District (BUSD) nearly $600,000 in the case of a special-education suit filed against the district that was dismissed. The decision, handed down by Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton, was announced on July 13 and gives $578.854.20 to the BUSD for defense costs, including attorney fees, in the case of Garedakis vs. the Brentwood Union School District. The court found the lawsuit lacked factual and legal basis. The Garedakis suit was filed on Aug. 26, 2014, and involved 15 claims on behalf of students and parents, alleging physical or emotional abuse at the hands of specialeducation teacher Dina Holder. According to a press release by the BUSD, the judge

dismissed the case on Feb. 24, 2017, and ordered the defendants to recover their costs. The monies will go into a joint powers authority (JPA) account, which is a risk pool made up of many school districts. This was the third legal filing to allege abuse by Holder, whose teaching credential was revoked in 2013 following a no-contest plea to child abuse for kicking a student in 2010. The prior lawsuits were settled out of court for millions of dollars. BUSD Superintendent Dana Eaton wrote the following in a recent press release: “In the time since these cases were filed, our district has made extensive enhancements to its training for employees, and district training now exceeds state requirements. Through a partnership with

the Child Abuse Prevention Council, nearly 1,000 employees and substitutes have received additional in-person training on the responsibilities of being a mandated reporter. The Brentwood Union School District is committed to a safe environment for all students. “Our current staff continues to work diligently to meet the educational needs of all of our students. We will continue to vigorously defend the district and our staff against unwarranted litigation. We are pleased with the outcome of this case and hope that our resources can now be better utilized to provide the best education possible for the over 9,000 students we currently serve.”

Deanna Masterman, lay pastor for the Delta Community Presbyterian Church, was the one who founded the program Rodrigues now handles. It started simply

as a free bread distribution and grew from there. Seeing it take off and being able to watch her community members dive in to help has been a ministry for her. “We have some amazing volunteers who will even find out a shoe size for those in need and bring them a pair of shoes,” Masterman said. “I’m just so grateful to be a part of it. We share a moment of prayer

and encouragement; we’re a community, and we care for each other and do whatever it takes. It’s not just a hand out; it’s a hand up.” For more information or to reach Rodrigues in regard to a building availability, call 925-625-2651 or email jennyrodrigues51@aol.com.

Bay group and found the Delta Plan invalid. Changes sought by the lawsuit will make approval of the tunnels more difficult. “The first lawsuit was a warm-up; the main event is now,” said Brodsky. Construction would involve enormous tunnel-boring machines, lowered to subterranean depths through access shafts excavated throughout the Delta. The earth removed from the tunnel bores and access shafts would be dumped on Delta islands. The project’s EIR states that 30,000,000 cubic yards of ‘reusable tunnel material’ would be deposited into the Delta – as tall as Mount Shasta and large enough to cover

a football field. “They used to call it ‘tunnel muck,’ but they changed the name somewhere along the line for PR purposes,” said Mike Guzzardo, local real-estate agent. “Our community is not a dumping ground, and we are going to keep fighting until we stop the tunnels.” In a 2015 review of the then draft EIR, the Delta Independent Science Board concluded the EIR “fails to inform weighty decisions about public policy.” The science board members said they believed the California WaterFix’s promises to improve the EIR would not come soon enough. In a recent statement, the board

declared the content would arrive far too late in the EIR process, especially since it is so critical to comprehending proposals and potential impacts. “(CDWR has) fiddled around the edges since then, but the document is still fatally flawed,” Brodsky added. “It isn’t too late; we can and we will win this fight.” The STCDA is holding an informational fair at the Bullfrog Marina on Saturday, July 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend. ore than 30 years ago, Antioch resident Lynn Sorvari was a victim of

spousal abuse. Now, as the co-owner of Flowing Motion, a family-owned and fully integrated martial-arts school, she and her husband Roy Sorvari are committed to helping women empower themselves through learning self-defense. Flowing Motion is offering a free women’s self-defense workshop on Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. The free workshop is available twice year and lasts about 90 minutes. “With one in six girls estimated to become a victim of sexual assault by the age of 18, empowering women with the basic training and tools for personal safety is imperative,” said Lynn. “It is our mission to make a difference.” The self-defense workshop, which is open to women 13 years and older, will focus on awareness and will teach a few techniques suited to build courage and confidence. “It will be hands-on, in a safe, supportive and fun environment,” said Lynn. “This is a great opportunity for mothers, daughters, sisters or friends to learn together.” According to Lynn, awareness, avoid-

your adversary a face-saving way out,” she said. “Sometimes, despite your best intentions, you may find yourself in a situation where there really is no alternative but to defend yourself.” When you are left with no alternative, it is essential to have some skills to fend off your attacker. “This introductory-level workshop can give you some of the basic skills, courage and confidence you will need in order to fend off an attack,” she said. The basic skills will be taught by Lynn and her husband Roy, who has more than 34 years of experience training and teaching selfdefense and martial arts. He has achieved one of the highest levels of qi cultivation, joining the few who ever attain this level. Before opening Flowing Motion in 2013, Roy taught classes in other studios, while continuing to study under martial arts masters, including with the reknowned Madam Min Ou Yang, who is known as the ‘All Powerful of China.’ Roy and Lynn, who is also a Kung Fu and Tai Chi practitioner, developed their own mission before opening their own studio. “Flowing Motion is committed to improving your quality of life,” said Lynn. “We provide a level of expertise carefully see Self-Defense page 5B

ucked away at the end of historic downtown Brentwood is a new CrossFit-affiliated

gym, which is building a name for itself while building the muscles and overall wellness of its clientele. Still a young business, Grey Group Fitness opened in October 2016 to improve the daily lives of those who walk into the warehouse, which is home to a host of equipment, including logs and tires. Owner Eric Yunck especially wanted to create a space for everyone to feel like they were part of something more akin to family. As a multiple-deployment combat veteran who was wounded in active duty during a tour in Afghanistan, he recognized the importance of camaraderie and accountability with regard to health and wellness. In 2014, after nearly 20 years in the military, Yunck left active duty as a 90 percent disabled veteran and began searching for a job. Even with a master’s degree in organizational leadership and a bachelor’s degree in business, he couldn’t find work. “You’re trying to prove your worth, when not a lot of people understand how the skills you’ve gained during service carry over

into civilian life,” Yunck said, noting this to be a problem for many soldiers seeking careers after their service. During recovery, Yunck used his CrossFit knowledge to heal his own body, while training friends who were police officers, swat members, martial-arts enthusiasts and more. “I thought, ‘I really enjoy this, and I’ve always done this,’” said Yunck, who had been a coach and president for the Delta Patriots. The location of Grey Group’s gym became available when the Delta Patriots’ football program stopped using the warehouse located on Walnut Boulevard. Yunck decided to turn it into a gym to explore the ‘grey area’ within fitness and began searching for loans to turn the idea into a reality. “When you’re a swimmer – that’s pretty black and white – you train to enhance your swimming skills. But with cops or firefighters, they’re masters of functional fitness,” he said. The physical demands of such fields can be unpredictable from day to day, requiring a broad range of abilities, and while there are many firefighters and officers in attendance, this concept of functional fitness expands to all walks of life. “This isn’t just a cool-guy firefighter club,” he said. “From the teacher, to the stayat-home mom, the IT guy or the PG&E worker – they just want to be able to get up and be healthy and not hurt.” The members who didn’t let the logs

Getting blood work may be a necessity B UBBY’S NICKNAME FOR ME VARIED over the years, but around age 4, whenever we had to go to the doctor and I needed a shot, it was Spider. I immediately went into panic mode and, with legs and arms flailing in resistance, I became a crazed and Senior animated spider child. orner It took both my mom and my aunt to hold me down, while the doctor did her best to aim and shoot! It’s not as bad now, but I still have to look away, hold my Marla breath and hum either Luckhardt “The Star-Spangled Banner” or a lively show tune. Don’t even ask what the phlebotomist must be thinking. It’s a routine necessity as we get older, but I must say, it’s getting easier each time,

C

and the lab I go to seems to have a lock on kindness, efficiency and punctuality. Depending on how often the doctor requires lab work, an appointment is not offered or needed for a blood test. If you have to do a fasting draw, it’s likely you will go early, so ask your lab of choice in advance when the slower time might be. Lots of people who go to work will go as soon as they open. I tend to eat midmorning, so I can always go about 9:30 or 10 a.m. and walk right in. If fasting is not required, the best times to go are between 9:30 and 11 a.m. or after lunch, between 2 and 4 p.m. Many times, the doctor is checking your cholesterol, sugar levels and creatinine. The panel will also include a potassium count and a few other things, depending on what his or her concerns are for you. If you have an annual checkup, discuss in advance with your doctor’s office what may be on your mind about your health, so they can add that test to your work up.

Most medical groups will send you an email within 24 hours with your results. It’s almost like getting a report card from school to see if you got good grades or at least passed! It will also usually include a graph of past levels, so I was able to compare and see if that chocolate dessert a few nights ago had any impact on my sugar level. When Grandpa and I got home from our recent vacation, I was slightly panicked about those wonderful cruise ship desserts, but I sighed with relief when my glucose level remained the same as before. Most of us take some sort of vitamin or herbal supplements, and for the most part, they are helpful and not harmful. The levels of certain components like calcium and magnesium, as well as potassium, can be monitored properly with these blood tests and will determine if the additions are needed. Too much of a good thing is as bad as too little. A lot of our numbers can be regulated or aided by supplements, so

discuss this with your doctor for your best regimen. Fish oil has a great impact for me on my cholesterol level, and I don’t really like bananas, so I use potassium, but again, too much can be a problem. Calcium is good for bones, teeth and nails, but use that only if needed, as it can result in stones if not taken correctly. The golden years can be a juggling game, and monitoring health with proper testing can be lifesaving. The days of wondering if I will get a shot is the least of my issues. Now it’s shrimp or no shrimp, cheese or no cheese, and let’s not even talk about fried food or candy! Oh, and I bet Bubby would have nicknamed me Braveheart now. ♦♦ Know your skin type It helps to have a cursory understanding of your skin. This includes whether it is dry, combination, sensitive or oily. When considering your skin type, also keep in mind potential allergens that may have irritated your skin in the past. Avoid cosmetic products with these ingredients. ♦♦ Weed out the ones that don’t work Certain ingredients, such as retinol or alpha hydroxy acids, can cause some irritation. However, dermatologists say cosmetic products should not burn, cause redness or inflammation. If a product does, discontinue use. Skin or hair should not get worse before it gets better.

♦♦ Give products time Read the instructions on the packaging or bottle. Certain cosmetic products are designed to work quickly. Others, particularly those that treat wrinkles or dark spots on skin, may need two weeks to a month to produce the desired results. A good rule of thumb is that the longer an issue lasts, the more time a product will need to produce the desired results. ♦♦ Go out in the sun The best way to determine if a shade of makeup matches or if a product looks flawless is to go out in the sun. Although cosmetics have come a long way and digital color-matching is some of the most advanced technology, natural light is the best way to

determine a skin-tone match. If the makeup looks great during the day, it should work well under other lighting situations as well. ♦♦ Do a consultation Visit a department store and head to the beauty counter. Ask about the newest products available and request a trial. This enables you to see firsthand how items feel and look, and you may learn some professional application tips as well. Similarly, when at the hair salon, ask your stylist which products are ideal for your hair type and desired results. You don’t necessarily have to buy them at the salon, but you can comparison shop or look for similar formulations later. – Courtesy Metro Creative
