Town implements First day smiles water restrictions by Heather Brewer Correspondent
The Discovery Bay Community Services District is implementing the emergency water conservation measures adopted by the California Water Resources Control Board on July 15. The measures include the prohibition of watering lawns a nd landscape more than twice weekly; the watering of outdoor landscapes that cause runoff to adjacent property, non-irrigated areas, private and public walkways, roadways and parking lots; direct application of water to any hard surface for washing; u sing a h ose to wash a mo-
tor vehicle, boat or recreational vehicle, unless the hose is fitted with a shut-off nozzle; and using potable water in a fountain or water feature, unless the water is recirculated. The restrictions go into effect Aug. 1. As a result of the regulations, Discovery Bay will immediately reduce irrigation to all parks a nd landscape areas to twice weekly as well as close the Ravenswood Park Splash Pad. "This is the third yea r of critical drought in California, a nd it is important that a ll Discovery Bay residents take these measures seriously," said Discove ry Bay General Manager Rick

Delta outrage spills into Sacramento Delta enthusiasts and concerned East County residents put aside their daily routines on Tuesday to ra lly outside of the state capitol in Sacramento, delive1ing a clear message to Gov. Jerry Brown that they will not back down from opposing his Bay D elta Conservation Pla n (BDCP) tunnel project. A charter bus carrying East County residents to the protest brimmed with excitement and high emotions as it meandered through the heart of D elta country and up into Sacramento. While the majority of the protesters were middle-aged a nd senior citizens, the crowd diversified when the crowds converged on the Capitol Mall, where a number of local college students a nd young people joined in, including an aspiring band that played Delta-themed protest songs before the speeches began.

East County residents traveled to Sacramento this week to protest the Bay Delta Conservation Plan twin tunnel s project.
Braving the hot sun, dozens of East County protesters lin ked up with other Northern California activists to chant slogans and listen to speeches by prominent critics of the plan, including Assemblyman Jim Frazier, an Oakley resident.
The rally was timed to mark the conclusion of the public comment period for the BDCP, a proposal opponents would like to see replaced with a ballot initiative. "A plan that proposes to build two 35-mile long tunnels, 40-

"The outreach for this project has not been transparent, and the information has not been made easily accessible to the public. . .. A plan of tllis magnitude requires the thoughtful input of all Californians so we can solve our water challenges as a collective whole." Frazier also alleged that the BDCP fails to comply with the Federal Enda ngered Species Act a nd offers a skewed environmental impact report. Mixon suspected of assault Fire board by Kyle Szymanski Former Freedom f ootball star and Oklahoma Sooner Joe Mixon, left, is the suspect in an assault that happened outside an Oklahoma restaurant last week.
Staff Writer Former Freedom football star Joe Mixon is a suspect in an assault that took place at an Oklahoma restaurant last week, Oklahoma police confirmed Monday. Officials with the Norman Police Department said Mixon, a freshman on the Sooners football team, and a 20-year-old female were allegedly involved in an altercation outside of Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe that spilled over into the restaura nt at about 2:40a. m. on July 25. "When we a rrived on scene, there was a female with significant facial injuries who had been involved in the altercation and was subsequently assaulted," Norman Police Capt. Todd G ibson said. " Currently, Mr. Mixon is the suspect." Mixon was not at the scene when police arrived , but has been cooperative with authorities, Gibson said. Investigators are continuing to talk with Mixon as well as 10 to 12 other witnesses before the case will be sent to the C leveland County District Attorney Office to determine if charges wi ll be filed, said G ibson, who added he doesn't expect Mixon to be arrested this week. Norman attorney Kevin Finlay, who's representing Mixon, said late Monday that Mixon acted in self-defense. "This past Friday morning, Joe Mixon found himself in a situation where he

was subjected to both verbal and physical attacks from a very intoxicated and troubled young woman," Finlay said. "As a result of these physical attacks, Joe instinctually defended himself against further harm . As promised, Joe met with investigators from the Norman Police Department this afternoon (Monday). "Throughout the meeting, Joe continued to be forthcoming and cooperative with their investigation. We are looking forward to a thorough investigation and are very much looking forward to the truth coming out. As we have always maintained, Joe has done nothing wrong."
The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department released the following statement Monday afternoon: "We are aware of this matter, and it is under review. We take these reports very seriously." Mixon was the nation's top high school all-purpose back last season. He had about 50 Division I college scholarships on the table but whittled down his choices to Oklahoma, Wisconsin and UCLA before announcing his decision to attend Oklahoma on national television during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January. Oakley votes to snuff out smoking The City of Oakley is joining other jurisdictions in Contra Costa County by passing new legislation that restricts smoking outdoors. The new ordinance will take effect on Aug.8. Smoking is prohibited on city-owned property, such as parks, sports facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds, plazas and similar areas. Smoking is also prohibited on streets and sidewalks that are closed for special events, incl uding farmers' markets, parades and festivals. Smoking is also pro hibited on some privately owned properties that are generally open to the public, including outdoo r restaurant dining areas, swap meets, nurseries, temporary outdoo r sales areas and bus shelters. The existing ordinance prohibiting smoking indoors in areas frequented by
the public, such as restaurants, stores and offices, continues in effect. The new ordinance, which was passed last month, also regulates e-cigarette use. E-cigarettes a re to be treated in the same manner as to bacco and are banned in indoor areas and the designated outdoor areas. Minors are prohibited from using e-cigarettes unless inside their homes with the consent of a parent or guardian. In discussing the new ordinance, the Oakley City Council received information from reliable sources that e-cigarette vapor contains carcinogenic and other harmful materials. A majo rity of the council determined the vapor could also be a nuisance to persons near to where an e-cigarette is being used. For more information about this ordinance, visit www.ci.oakley.ca .us.

How to Sell High: Avoid these Three Mistakes When Selling Your Home East County - When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they're even given a chance of showing. Your asking price is often your home's "first impression': and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it's imperative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on it's
own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, wh ich compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled "Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need)". This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three diffe rent angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want. A mother's stress is never-ending Why did I think that I would actually have Jess stress when my kids grew up? So far that has not been the case. From their cars that need costly repairs, to their never-ending need for money, to the horrific massacre that occurred at my son's school H ANGIN ' IN in Santa Barbara, the problems span THERE different degrees of seriousness and have resulted in me praying a Jot more. Even good news can throw me into a panic. For instance, my oldest VICKI son scored a summer M c K ENNA job at Dick's Sporting Goods. Hooray! Finally he can buy his own gas a nd those Kinder's ball-tip sandwiches he seems to require daily. But then I realized he would be driving from Antioch to Pleasant Hill via the freeway. I hate the freeway. I have close brushes with death almost every time I get on it. When will the endless construction end? Don't you Jove those blasted cement barriers aU along Highway 4? C ould they make the Ja nes any skinnier? Drivers weave in and out of traffic like it's the Indy 500. Don't even get me started on the texters. I'm starting to hyperventilate just thinking about it. James looked so cute in his golf attire as he got ready for his first day at work. He was visibly excited. Then he
told me one of his shifts starts at 4:30 a.m. That's when the drunks are driving home! Why does he have to be there at 4:30? Is Dick's trying to kill me? More praying ahead. My daughter up at Davis informed me she was going to be a camp counselor for a group of foster care children in Yosemite. It sounded like a fun and rewa rding summer job until I found o ut that she had to drive the enormous van full of kids both up and back from Davis. Other fears came to mind: falling off a cliff, inhaling the deadly hantavirus and bears. What sent me over the edge was that she would not be able to call me. No cell phones allowed, and no cell service anyway, even if she had a phone. She wouldn't even be able to Jet me know if she arrived safely. My kids are all very sensitive to my hysteria about them. Mary tried to comfort me with that old saying "No news is good news." Or they'll say, "Just relax a nd pretend I'm going to class every day." More praying. I still have two more kids I have to teach how to drive! First dates and first broken hearts are still ahead as is the bittersweet task of driving them to college and saying goodbye. U npredictable and frightening events are surely looming out there, but I'll be there, too. Praying.

WATER FINES RELIEF Many local residents are letting their lawns go brown to save water during the drought. There are even penalties now fo r wasting water, so you don't want to get caught with water running down the street from your lawn sprinklers! But some homeowners are getting nasty notices from their local homeowner's association for not keeping their lawns green, so it's created quite a catch-22! However, there is a new law on the books that provides relief for this situation. On July 22 of this year, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 2100 into law. This prevents homeowner's associations from fining residents who stop watering their lawns during d rought emergencies. Governor Brown declared a drought em ergency back in January of this year. This new law only applies to homeowner's associations, so other entities like a city or county could still potentially fine
---:.·
som eone for not keeping their lawn green if they have laws like that on their books. However, I'd expect they would be quite lax about enforcing those laws given the severity of this drought. I did hear a landscape "expert" interviewed the other day on the radio and he swears that most lawns won't die if you stop watering them for a period of time. He claims it will just go dormant and will bounce back when you start watering again. I have seen many brown lawns come back when water is turned on again, so he may be right. I'm sure eventually they will die if you leave them dry long enough, so be careful! Brushing up on name game Some of my best ideas for columns come while I'm in the shower. Since I'm not much of a singer, I tend to write out loud while I lather up. Too bad I don't have a waterproof computer because there are times when I finally sit down to write, but a lot of those brilliant ideas seem to have gone down the drain with the sudsy water. SENIOR It is not unusual to start to forget things as we CoRNER get older. A friend told me that since we accumulate so much knowledge in our brains over the years, it takes a few minutes to retrieve the information from our vast files of information. I'll buy into that theory. MARLA One of the most common LUCKHARDT issues we experience is remembering names of people who we may not see too often. Those few seconds when we resort to calling them sweetie, dear or honey as we mentally go through the alphabet can be very uncomfortable. That's when I pray this is not Zeke or Zelda. Although this method works for me at times, there are a few helpful ways for recalling names. If you're meeting someone for the first time, repeat their name back to them immediately, as in " Nice to meet you, Bob." Continue to use their names in the conversation and if at all possible write it down someplace. Think of people you know well who have the same name and visualize that person. Associate the name with an image, if one comes
to mind. For example, link the name Sandy with the image of a beach or April with a calendar. Unfortunately this may not work Zelda or Zeke. A few times when I have been out with grandpa, I can't recall a name of someone approaching us to say hello. I used to panic, but then we came up with a plan that within a few moments grandpa would say, "Hello, I'm Ernie, and you are?" That's my cue to say, "Oh, I thought you met before. Sorry." Another awkward moment is avoided. Why does this happen? There are some common things that can promote memory loss, including smoking, consuming too much alcohol and not getting enough sleep. Fatigue can elevate memory loss. A healthy diet can deter memory issues and avoiding stress is a good way to increase brain functions in a positive way. A number of prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with or cause loss of memory as well. Some of these include antidepressants, antihistamines, antianxiety medications, muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, sleeping pills and pain medications given after surgery. Check with your doctor for the possible side effects of these medicines. More serious things like a severe hit to the head from a fall or accident, or a stroke can injure the brain and cause both short- and long-term memory losses. Anytime you hit your head, you should immediately call 911, especially if you black out for any period of time. It's better to be safe and have it checked out to ensure there is no concussion.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is stopped due to the blockage of a blood vessel or leakage of a vessel into the brain. Strokes can also cause short-term memory loss, but if the incident is mild, the memory can return with some therapy. More severe strokes can inhibit the ability to recall things that happened in more recent times as opposed to childhood memories. It is not unusual to be a little forgetful. Keeping lists, doing puzzles, enjoying challenging games, keeping up with current events and having lively conversations with others stimulates the brain and our memory. World Breastfeeding Week celebrated throughout Contra Costa County World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated in more than 170 countries, is intended to highlight the important health benefits of breastfeeding. Research shows that infants who are breastfed for at least the first six months experience five times fewer illnesses, three times fewer ear infections and are less likely to develop asthma or become obese. Mothers who breastfeed lose postpartum weight faster and have lower risks of ovarian and breast cancer. In support of breastfeeding, Contra Costa Health Services is sponsoring several free events planned during the 22nd annual World Breastfeeding Week celebration (Aug. 1 to Aug. 7). Here is a list of events in a community near you: Saturday, Aug. 2 Moms and families are welcome at the Contra
Costa County Community Baby Shower at Grace Bible Fellowship of Antioch, 3415 Oakley Road in Antioch, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event includes free food, workshops, access to health resources and fun prizes. For information or to register, call 925-646-5200. Tuesday, Aug. 5 The Breast Milk Express returns to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center lobby while the Contra Costa WIC Program staffs a Lactation Station at the Farmers' Market in the parking lot. Join in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6 Contra Costa WIC Program hosts afternoon celebrations at clinics in Concord and Brentwood, featuring education and referrals, nutrition infor-
mation and games for breastfeeding moms and WIC consumers. The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties will offer free produce. The events run from 1:30 to 4:30p.m. at 2355 Stanwell Circle in Concord and 171 Sand Creek Road, Suite A, in Brentwood. For more information, call the Contra Costa Breastfeeding Advice Line at 866-878-7767. Additional breastfeeding resources are available at www.cchealth. org/services/breastfeeding.

OBAMACARE AND THE SMALL EMPLOYER Recently, many small business owners have expressed concerns about understanding the impact of The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) on their operations cost and on retaining their employees. Simply put, the new Healthcare Act added new penalties and restrictions, BUT it did not wipe off the old health care laws from the books. Another way oflooking at it is that you can still cross the playing field and win. You only have to watch out for a few hidden land mines. For most small businesses, the two critical factors for determining the best health care strategy are the number of employees AN D the amount of money, if any, that the business owner wants to contribute to his employee plans. FACT # l: If you are an employer with fewer than 50 employees, you are not under any obligation to provide any coverage for your employees. FACT #2: If you have fewer than 50 employees but determine that staff retention requires that you provide health care, you have four options: Section I05 medical reimbursement plan
A flexible spending arrangement (FSA) A health savings account (HSA) and Group health insurance. Discussing the details of each of these four options and how to set up the related plans is beyond the scope of this article. Each of the four options has different associated costs. HSAs and FSAs can be inexpensive. FSAs can be free to the business owner as employees pay for the plans by allocating pretax dollars to their FSA accounts. The business owner saves fi nancially by having less payroll taxes on employees FSA contributions and by only paying costs of administering the plan. There are also yearly limits on dollar contribution employees can make to HSAs and FSAs. Advice From People Who Filed Bankruptcy on Their Homes by Joan Grimes, Esq. Today I asked each person who carne into my office if they had any advice for people who are in default on their home loans. Here is their advice. 1. Seek Legal Counsel. Don't wait to find out your options. Almost every person said they would have done things differently if they had w1derstood the law applicable to their situation and the options available to them. 2. Don't borrow or take money from your 401 k, IRA, Savings AccoWlt, Children's Saving Accounts or Deferred Compensation to cure the default. 1be reason this is good advice is that money borrowed from a 401 k must be repaid or it will be considered income to you. Yuck. If the money is just taken from the 401 k or IRA, that is a distribution and you will be taxed on the amount of the distribution plus there may be an additional penalty. Most importantly, 1099c income is not dischargeable in bankruptcy. 3. Don't borrow money from family to cure mortgage. The reason this is good advice is that family wants to be repaid irrespective of whether you file bankruptcy. 4. Don't juggle credit cards to pay mortgage. This is good advice because in many instances the cash advances will cause problems in a bankruptcy. In addition, depending on the type of real estate debt you have, a short sale or foreclosure may be possible without a bankruptcy. However, if you run up your credit cards trying to keep the house, a bankruptcy may be inevitable. 5. Don't leave the house Wltil your property foreclosure or short sale is complete. Almost every person who has left his or her home prior to the foreclosure or short sale being completed
regrets this decision. Once you stop paying on the mortgage, your rent is free with the exception of paying the Homeowners Dues and keeping insurance on the property. Furthermore, since you are still responsible for the maintenance of the property until the foreclosure or short sale process is concluded, you might as well enjoy it and save some money. No reason to pay rent any sooner than necessary. 6. Don't let your cultural pride stand in the way of making soWld financial decisions. The economy of your parents' generation is not the same as today. If you do not have sufficient income to pay your bills as they are due, you should seek legal cow1sel before withdrawing any monies from a retirement accoWlt or savings account or taking a loan against your home or car. These are difficult times, but do not miss the help and protection provided by the Bankruptcy Code and California law by waiting too long. Just because this ship is underwater does not mean that you should give up the life vests you will need to keep yourself afloat! I see people for a FREE 30 minute consultation in my offices in Walnut Creek and Brentwood. WE ARE A DEBT RELIEF AGENCY. WE HELP PEOPLE FILE BANKRUPTCY. AJAX East Bay narrowly miss national title shot As members of the AJAX East Bay 98 Girls squad headed back to school this week, it's likely their memories of summer still remained with them. The soccer squad tore through its competition the past two months, narrowly earning a shot to play for the U.S Club Soccer National Cup XII title last week in North Carolina. After earning a bid in the tournament by winning the Western Regionals in June, the team fell one game short of playing for the national title. The tournament featured more than 100 elite under-13 through under-17 boys and girls teams from around the U.S. The AJAX girls defeated Florida's IMG Academy 2-1 and the ISA Sting 98G from New York, before losing 1-0 to New Jersey's FC Copa Celeste in the semifinals in an evenly matched defensive battle.
The team earned a bid in the tournament with an impressive run through the Western Regionals in June. The squad outscored the North Bay Elite Football Club, Tualatin Hills United Soccer Club, Orchard Valley and the Cal Blues 99g 11-2 en route to its national championship tournament appearance. But the path to North Carolina wasn't easy. In triple-digit temperatures, the squad played the Cal Blues to a 1-1 tie through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. AJAX connected on a couple of penalty kicks, while goalkeeper Caylin Stanley stopped five consecutive shots to send the East County squad to North Carolina. The AJAX girls will try to build ontheir success at the National Cup when they compete in the Soccerloco Surf Cup in San Diego th is weekend.

Liberty girls basketball wins Delta Summer League by Nate Smith Correspondent
After seeing his young Liberty High School girls basketball team post an 11 -win improvement from the 2012-13 season to the 2013- 14 season, second-year head coach Josh Ellcessor was eager to see them build upon that foundation during the 2014 Delta Summer League. Liberty didn't disappoint. Led by all-league players from last winter, Jamesha Green and Kaily Bigley, the Lady Lions went I 0-2 du ring regu lar league play and then defeated Weston Ranch H igh School of Stockton and Manteca High School in the playoffs to win the league. " There were quite a few strong teams in the (Delta Summer) league," said Ellcessor. "Weston Ranch, Lincoln, Brookside Christian and Manteca should all be playoff teams." The youthful Lions, who have five returning varsity contributors still with two years or more remaining, played well against each team in the league. The team's two round-robin losses were to Manteca and Lincoln of Stockton. Liberty rebounded from those

losses to win 10 of its fi nal 11 league games, setting them up to play Weston Ranch in the semifinals, while Lin-
colo and Ma nteca battled in the other bracket. After dispatching Weston Ranch,
the Lions dominated the rematch with Manteca, winning 42-32 in the title game. Other notable victories for Liberty occurred against Brookside Christian of Stockton and against league rival Deer Valley, who has beaten Liberty 23 straight times in Bay Valley Athletic League play - dating back to 2004. Coach Ellcessor was impressed with the strong play and improvement from a number of returning varsity players during summer league play. T he summer performance by Green, who earned second-team all-league honors last season, was especially notable in her increased poise on the court, while Bigley continually altered and eventually deterred shots in the paint. She also shined on offense, scoring down low and forcing a large number of double teams. Kai Bohannon, meanwhile, drew praise from Ellcessor for being the workhorse of the team by continuing to develop into a true point guard and floor leader. Ellcessor also singled out sisters Monica and Michelle LaHaie as key contributors, along with junior Lauren Ellcessor. To comment, visit www. thepress. net.

Delta Valley Athletic Club Wellness Update By Sandy McCaslin
Eating strategies while dining out Dining out is not a contest, a race or a chance to solidify your membership in the Clean Plate Club. It's an opportunity to enjoy yourself and a good meal. Guilt can ruin everything. You can choose to not feel guilty (not likely for many of us), or you can give yourself less to feel guilty about. A few small eating strategies will make your experience dining away from home a positive one and help you build momentum for next time. Eat your lowest calorie items fi rst. Vegetables are always a good place to start. Eat the same amount you would eat at home. You don't have to eat everything just because it's on your plate. Eat slowly and take your time. Savor and enjoy one bite at a time. Put your fork down between bites, or take a sip of water. Concentrate on the conversation, not your fo od. If you're talking, it takes longer to eat and helps you feel full before you stuff yourself. When half of your food is gone, stop a moment and ask
yourself this question: "Am I hungry?" It sounds simple, but you'd be surprised how often the answer is "no:' Don't pick at your food after you've decided that you're done. Cover your plate with a napkin. Then go for a walk. Walking is one of the safest and most effective sports for fitness. You should exercise vigorously enough to increase your heart rate at least 20 beats per minute more than while at rest. Walking at a leisurely pace will not raise your heart rate very much. Try increasing your speed by taking longer steps or by moving your feet at a faster pace. If you are not sure where to start contact us for some free tips. Everyone needs a Coach, Sandy M . Passionate Antioch councilman dies by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer Gary Agopian, a high-energy civil servant with a passion for bettering and unifying the community, died this week after a 10-month battle with brain cancer. He was 57. The 19-year Antioch resident, who was elected to the city council in 2010, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor last September, but never stopped serving his city. He fiercely advocated for the passage of Measure C, a half-cent sales tax toward public safety, leading up to its approval last November, and attended council meetings until the end of June, the last two escorted in a wheelchair. News of his death on Monday led to an outpouring of fond memories by many friends and fellow city leaders. "Gary was a likable fellow, a real extrovert and a natural for governance," said Walter Ruehlig ,who was elected to the school board with Agopian in 2004. " He liked vigorous dialogue and wore the
Water f rom page 1A Howard. "Hopefully, a wet winter will ease the drought, but in the meantime, we have to work together and conserve our water to protect future supplies." These water conservation measures follow the governor's executive order, which was issued April 25, seeking to strengthen the state's ability to manage water and habitat effectively in drought conditions. "The driest months are still to come in California and extreme drought conditions will get worse," said Gov. Jerry Brown when the order was issued. "This order cuts red tape to help get water to farmers more quickly, ensure communities have safe drinking water, protect vulnerable species and prepare for an extreme fire season. I call on every city, every community, every Californian to conserve water in every way possible." All Californians are required to comply with these regulations, which are supported by nearly 75 percent of residents of the state, according to the Public Policy Institute of California. In poll findings released by the institute on July 22, strong majorities of residents and likely voters say they favor their local water districts requiring residents to reduce water use. Residents across the state are in favor of implementing the
Delta from page 1A veyed in full when a wooden coffin marked "NorCal Water Supply" was delivered to Brown's office. Inside the coffin were thousands of signatures from a petition drafted in the early 1980s when a project similar to the current BDCP was pushed by Brown and thwarted. H owever, despite the projection of confidence, some demonstrators acknowledged they were "p reaching to the choir." "It's great to get the message out. The only problem is that everybody in Northern
mantle of public service with distinction. When he made a decision, agree or disagree with him, you knew he was coming from a platform of integrity and considered forethought." AGOPIAN A native of Los Angeles, Agopian moved to Antioch in 1995 with his wife and three children in the midst of a 27-year retail management career with Sears and then Best Buy before becoming a realtor in 2003. Later that year, he was appointed to the Antioch Economic Development Commission, where his eagerness to help the community blossomed into his passion. Agopian was elected to the Antioch School Board of Trustees in 2004, serving as vice president and president during his fouryear term. He ran unsuccessfully for the District 5 county supervisor seat in 2008 before
being elected to the Antioch City Council in 2010. He most recently ran for mayor of Antioch but was beat by Wade Harper. "One of the things I liked about Gary was the fact that he was honest and forthright with high energy," said Antioch School Board Trustee Claire Smith, who served with Agopian. "We had a very unified board during those years, something that was needed to guide the district through some tough money times." As a councilmember, Agopian was often outspoken, fighting for fiscal prudence, law and order and for the city's water rights. He was a key advocate for the annexation of 600 aceas of land into the city, which included the NRG and Pacific Gas and Electric power plants and Federal Dunes Wildlife Preserve. But he didn't just serve his constituents. He worked with them to better the city around him. He spearheaded the Graffiti Subcommittee, leading the way with a paintbrush in hand, and was a consummate presence at citywide cleanup events. "He will be sorely missed by me and the whole community," said Antioch
School Board President Joy Motts, who added she'd never erase voicemail messages from Agopian that remain on her phone. "I respected the way he chose to spend his days with his faith, family and the community." Agopian's council colleagues said his mark on life extended beyond politics. Councilmember Tony Tiscareno said Agopian was sensitive and approachable. "The most touching time I felt with Gary is when I had to report the passing of my friend and formercouncilmember Reggie Moore," Tiscareno said. "As I struggled emotionally to speak, Gary put his hand on my shoulder which calmed me down so I could finish my remarks. Gary was easygoing but strong in his convictions. I'm going to miss his presence because I had so much more to learn from him." Agopian is survived by his wife, Robin, sons Corey and Jason, daughter Heather Renard and granddaughter Kaylei. Services are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9 at Golden Hills Church, 2401 Shady Willow Lane in Brentwood, at 2 p.m. To comment, visit www. thepress.net.
emergency measures, a perspective mirrored in Discovery Bay. "I have lived in Discovery Bay for 30 years, and we've never had to worry about water use during droughts because we have well water," said Cathleen Ekman, a Discovery Bay resident. "But this is the worst drought in many years, and the wells are starting to dry up now. We've got to start taking this seriously and make some changes, so I think the restrictions are a great idea." In order to support the restrictions, local agencies could ask courts to fine water users up to $500 a day for failure to implement conservation requirements. Additionally, the State Water Board could initiate enforcement actions against water agencies that don't comply with the new regulations. Water agencies that fail to comply with a State Water Board are subject to up to a $10,000 per day penalty. In an effort to encourage water conservation in suburban areas, homeowners associations can no longer fine residents who fail to water their lawns during droughts under legislation sponsored by a San Jose lawmaker. The new protections apply to residents of more than 50,000 homeowners associations across the state. The owners of roughly a quarter of all housing units
in California - nearly 5 million homes belong to such groups. "(This bill) protects homeowners from being penalized for doing the right thing by conserving water during the drought," said San Jose Assemblywoman Nora Campos, who drafted the bill. For those who are looking for additional ways to curb their water use or investigate and repair leaks, the Red Cross offers these tips: • Never pour water down the drain when there may be another use for it. Use it to water your indoor plants or garden. • Make sure your home is leak-free. Take a reading of the water meter. Wait 30 minutes without using any water and then take a second reading. If the meter reading changes, you have a leak. • Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers. One drop per second wastes 2,700 gallons of water per year. • Check for toilet leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. If you have a leak, the color will appear in the bowl within 30 minutes. Leaky toilets usually can be fixed inexpensively by replacing the flapper. • Replace your showerhead with an ultralow-flow version and take shorter showers. Turn the water on to get wet; turn off to lather up; then turn the water back on to rinse. Place a bucket in the shower to
catch excess water for watering plants. The Discovery Bay CSD provides water saving tips on its website and residents can also visit www.saveourh2o.org or www.redcross.org for more information. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.
California should be going to these protests since it will impact everything we do in the Delta for the rest of our lives if the tunnels go through," said attendee Chris Lauritzen, co-owner of Oakley's Lauritzen Yacht H arbor. "This is going to be like an armageddon for the region. Also, higher water rates and a higher tax bill will be coming, thanks to the governor." Roger Mammon, the secretary and a founding member of Restore the Delta - the group that mobilized Tuesday's protest, said he welcomed the turnout but believes the ef-
forts to stop the tunnels will need more public support. "The biggest problem with the BDCP is that nobody really knows about it," said Mammon, a longtime Oakley resident who commits most of his spare time to Deltarelated matters. "You would not believe how many people, especially here in Contra Costa, come up to me and ask 'what's this tunnel thing about?' This is a battle for outreach, education and getting the truth out." Knoll Farms goes beyond organic farming AMY SCHRADER ast County is known for its
E
rich agricultural landscapes
that yield bountiful harvests
of fresh produce. "Buy fresh, buy local" is a way of life thanks to the area's many local farm stands, including Knoll Farms, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary in Brentwood.
Rick and Kristie Knoll, owners of Knoll Farms, are certified organic farmers who practice biodynamic and ecological farming techniques. The Knolls believe their success comes from living soil. "Soil is the basis for life on Earth," said Katie Knoll. "The minerals and life in soil add a component to the food it grows that you can't get unless your soil is a living organism with nutrients and living critters. The soil in t his count ry is so deficient of minerals that it can't grow healthy food." The concern over the quality of soil in the count ry first peaked in the 1930s when people were noticing a change in both the produce and health of Americans. In 1936, U.S. Senate report No. 264 revealed that American soil no longer contained the necessary minerals that are essential to growing healthy food.
Knoll Farms is celebrating 35 years of farming in Brentwood. The organic farmers are part of the community of farms in East Contra Costa County, which is known for its rich agricultural history and bountiful produce.
According to Knoll, many farmers turned to chemical alternatives and pesticides that contain poison that kills living organisms, such as earthworms that naturally add nutrients to soil. While more farmers are turning to organic methods, the practice doesn't address the health of the soil. The Knolls introduce natural minerals, helpful critters, such as red worms and earthworms, powdered granite and other elements to ensure their soil will produce healthy food . "There's a beautiful cycle that nature has created that people cannot replicate," said
Knoll. "Healthy soil results in healthy plants, which produce a higher quality of fruits and vegetables." The desire to grow healthy food in healthy soil is what prompted the Knolls to start growing their own food. In the early 1970s, they were suburbanites living in Santa Ana. When Rick finished his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from UC Irvine, he got a job in Pittsburg. While they were looking at houses, they came across a 10-acre alfalfa farm in Brentwood. When the Knolls purchased the alfalfa farm in 1979, the Brentwood population was
only 3,662, but they didn't buy the property to become farmers. "We started growing food wit h the intention of feeding ourselves the healthiest food possible, but it became a necessity to sell it when we were soon buried in organic produce," said Knoll. Eventually, growing healthy food from healthy soil became a f ulltime endeavor. Today, the farm is in production year-round, and their produce includes varieties of artichokes, garlic, herbs, figs, apricots, plums, nectarines, flowers and salad greens. The Knoll family is known as the pioneers of green garlic. When the family started farming full time, they needed a winter crop. Rick planted garlic in September for an early harvest in January, hoping to harvest it at an immature age of six months versus the typical nine months. The result was garlic that resembled an overgrown scallion. They called it green garlic. There wasn't a precedent for pricing a vegetable of that kind, so to sell it, the Knolls had to get people to try it first. Katie combined diced green garlic with her favorite cheese, Cowgirl Creamery Fromage Blanc, which she served on a sourdough baguette at the farmers' market in San Francisco. The rest is history. "We paved the way for everyone else to grow and sell green garlic," said Knoll. Knolls Farm is located at 12 51 0 Byron Highway in Brentwood. Growing it local at Gursky Ranch HEATHER BREWER
T
he Gursky Ranch Country Store
Fresh and locally produced items such as sauces, dried fruits, oils and gift baskets are always on hand at Gursky Ranch Country Store.
has been an integral part of the Brentwood community for
more than 30 years. From its beginnings
as a seasonal fruit stand, the store has grown in the past decades, becoming a year-round haven for dried fruits and nuts, specialty soups, sauces and more than 390 other gourmet food items.
The Gursky family has been involved in agriculture for four generations. In 1975, Roy and Lynn Gursky and their family moved to Brentwood, setting out on a new agricultural endeavor. "We didn't know much about growing walnuts then, or marketing them, but with help from farmer friends, consultation from UC Davis and other authorities, we soon were educated about how to grow and manage our crop," Lynn Gursky said. "We started out by marketing our first crop f rom our garage in 1980."
Over the years, the business bloomed and flourished as the community around it sprang up. "Our store has been able to grow as Brentwood grew," said Gursky. "We've had some amazing loyal customers who still shop our store after 35 years, but we also get new people coming in every day. We really do benefit greatly from the unique agricultural flavor of this area and the small, hometown feel of Brentwood." The hometown feel is part of what keeps customers coming back.
ON THE COVER: The Gursky family from left, Sarah and Steve (with children Evan and Sophia) and matriarch Lynn make up the Gursky Ranch Country Store, one of Brentwood's homegrown gems.
"I like to support the mom-and-pop businesses as much as possible, which is pretty easy to do in Brentwood because of the agricultural core," said Cari Othman, a Knightsen Elementary School teacher and longtime patron of the store. "(The owners of t he Gursky Ranch Country store) are so friendly and warm. Even if you are a brand-new customer, they will treat you like an old friend." Selecting from local producers as much as possible, the store offers a long line of products, including honey, nuts, seeds, snacks, dried fruits, oils, spices, sauces, candy and gift baskets.
"We offer pure, raw, natural honey from the Brentwood and Knightsen area. The honey is unfiltered, not heated or pasteurized," said Gursky. "We also have a large selection of basket gifts, all hand processed here in our store. From our shrink-wrapped fruit and nut trays to the largest cello-wrapped baskets, we pay careful attention to quality and design." The attention to detail doesn't go unnoticed by the shopping public. " I like the variety of the items they sell sweet stuff like candies, as well as sauces and jams and nuts," said Brentwood resident Jane Rodriguez. "But I really love buying gifts from their shop. They have great gift baskets, and they are all so nicely packaged . You can tell they take pride in their products." Gursky Ranch Country Store is proud to be a part of Brentwood's distinctive character. "People in Brentwood love to shop locally and support small businesses, and we offer that connection to the community," Gursky said. "We love our customers and appreciate them so much. We're glad to be able to give t hem as much as they give us." The Gursky Ranch Country Store, located at 192 1 Apricot Way in Brentwood, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more informat ion, visit www.gurskyranch.com or call 925-634-4913. fter producing award-winning wines for a decade, Bloomfield Vineyards has proved that you
don't have to go to Napa or Sonoma
for the finest wines in California. In honor of its 10th anniversary, Bloomfield Vineyard is hosting a party Sunday, Aug. 24, at Co. Co. Wine, 633 First St. in Brentwood, to debut its 2013 vintages.
"When we released our fi rst vintage in 2004, people didn't understand that Contra Costa County was a viable w ine growing region," said Becky Bloomfield, vintner for Bloomfield Vineyards. Becky and her former husband Tom Bloomfield co-own Bloomfield Vineyards. Contra Costa County has long been known for its amazing fruits and vegetables, but not for producing wine. According to Bloomfield, it was challenging to change people's perceptions. "We broke the glass ceiling by getting our wines into restaurants and tasting rooms in Walnut Creek," said Bloomfield. Soon after its debut , Bloomfield Vineyard's wines started competing in state competit ions. Bloomfield Vineyard's 2009
