Fire forces evacuations, closures A fast-moving, winddriven vegetation fire on Sellers Avenue in unincorporated Oakley burned 58 acres, destroyed two outbuildings and left 5,600 customers without electricity due to a precautionary power shutdown in the area of Sellers Avenue and Delta Road, Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 7, according to the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD). An estimated 50 homes in the area of Crismore Drive, Delta Road and Sellers Avenue were evacuated around 12:45 p.m. but additional evacuations were not expected as of press time, said ECCFPD Fire Marshall Steve Aubert. “We are still at zero containment,” Aubert said, Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m. “We still have active fire that is burning. The Byron Union School District (BUSD) has had its ups and downs over the last few years, but Dr. Reyes Guana, new superintendent of the district, is determined to focus on the positive and improve the negative. Guana, who was previously the assistant superintendent in the Stockton Unified School District, is moving forward into the new school year to lead his students and staff to success. He plans to focus on four main areas, pinpointing what needs improvement and celebrating successes.

Brian Miller, who spent the last four years managing parks and landscaping for the town of Discovery Bay, will be leaving his position in September. Due to family ties, Miller will be relocating to Groveland, where he hopes to spend more time having fun and less time working. “I’ve enjoyed living on the lake here in town,” said Miller, who had been a Willow Lake resident for five years. “It’s nice on the water.” Miller was hired by the Town of Discovery Bay Community Services District (CSD) as parks and landscape manager in June 2015. During his tenure, he has worked with three general managers and seen several CSD members come and go. He completed multiple

scaping, parks, playgrounds, lighting, dog parks, aquatics, tennis courts and community center,” Davies said in an email to The Press. “He has had to wear a variety of hats and be a master of all trades. His talents won’t be easy to replace.” Miller’s last day will be Friday, Sept. 13. His wife, who retired after 20 years with the Antioch Unified School District, has already packed up their house and moved to Groveland. Miller said he looks forward to joining her. Bill Mayer, CSD board president, echoed the sentiments of the town’s staff. “We wish Brian the very best in his future endeavors and extend our deepest thanks and appreciation for all he has done for the town over the past four years,” Mayer said. projects, including a new roof on the community center, consolidating the landscaping storage and offices from four locations to one, and adding picnic tables, shade structures, benches and drinking fountains to the town’s parks. Miller admitted that his job has been a challenge: With five different lighting and landscaping zones to manage — each with their own budget — getting work done is anything but simple. “You can’t mix money in the different zones ... and once you run out of money, you stop working, and that can be difficult,” Miller said. His hard work has not gone unnoticed. Discovery Bay General Manager Mike Davies said Miller was able to operate in his multifaceted position with skill. “For the last four years, Brian has managed all the town’s land-

Marsh Complex Fire burns 757 acres by Tony Kukulich

Cal Fire airtankers drop retardant on the Marsh Complex Fire as it expands to 655 acres in rural Contra Costa County, Saturday, Aug. 3. A number of fires ignited along Marsh Creek Road between 3 and 4 a.m. Saturday morning and quickly spread in the dry grasslands. One firefighter was injured, but no structures were lost.

Staff Writer

Shortly after 3 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, a series of nine fires began burning along Marsh Creek Road from the vicinity of Round Valley Regional Park to Morgan Territory Road – a situation that would take four days and hundreds of firefighters to extinguish, and what came to be called the Marsh Complex Fire. The fire burned 757 acres of vegetation in rural Contra Costa County and efforts, particularly in the early hours of the blaze, prevented the loss of any homes or structures. Firefighters prioritized structure protection and moved from one location to another after the immediate danger passed, knowing that efforts to extinguish the fast-growing fire would be futile until additional resources arrived on scene. Much of that help was still hours away. “A lot of it has to do with having incidents out there, knowing where the infrastructure is, knowing what the priorities are and understanding when not to get overly committed,” said East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Fire Chief Brian Helmick. “We’re going to let this thing bump by and when it’s done, we’re going to get to the next one. We’re not putting it out. We’re conserving our water. That’s experience. That’s training. That’s understanding the area. And remember, it’s 3:30 in the morning.” Residents of Clayton Palms mobile home community were evacuated for a short time and a shelter in place order was put into effect. By 9 a.m., the nine fires had combined into three legs consuming 500 acres, and resources from around the region were pouring into the command center that had been established at Round Valley Regional Preserve. His home nearly burned in last year’s Marsh Fire, a 247-acre incident that burned along the south side of Marsh Creek Road and destroyed one home and a number of outbuildings. “It was almost a year to the day, maybe a year and a couple days since last year’s fire, which was on our prop-

erty,” said Fisher. “It’s real scary to wake up in the early morning and see the hills on fire.” ECCFPD Fire Marshal Steve Aubert reported around noon Saturday the fire had grown to 655 acres, but its forward motion had been halted. Mop up operations continued until Cal Fire declared the fire extinguished Tuesday evening. To view a videos and a slideshow, visit www.thepress. net/multimedia

Meet The Principal

Family Matters

by Silky Sahnan, esq.

Navigating through a divorce can be quite stressful without the support of a family lawyer. Here are five reasons to hire a divorce lawyer: 1. You may have started the process amicably, however it can turn sour as emotions run high. A divorce lawyer serves as a mediator for you and your ex-partner. It can be beneficial to have an unbiased third party to keep you on track. 2. While divorcing, you probably want to move forward with your life in a timely manner. Sometimes the process can become drawn out if you’re proceeding with a do-it-yourself divorce. By hiring a divorce lawyer, you can be assured that all of the paperwork will be correctly filled out and there will be no delays due to inadequate or unnecessary information.

3. When children are involved, it is advised that you put your parenting plan in writing so that it is legally binding. A friendly verbal agreement may seem just fine, however things can change and it is always best to have agreements such as these in writing. 4. Working with a divorce lawyer to handle all of the finer details can significantly reduce your stress. The saying, ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’ is very apt in this scenario. A divorce lawyer will guide you through the process and ensure you don’t miss anything. Are you going through a life transition? Agency: La Paloma High School Going into his fourth year as principal of La Paloma High School, Chris Holland has found his groove. He spends his days managing his small student body of 130 and working with his staff to make each student feel respected and listened to. “My favorite part of the job is interacting with students,” Holland said. “That’s what brings life to the job.” As a completion school, Holland fears La Paloma is perceived by the general public as a den of criminals and drug addicts. He said it isn’t anything like that, and his kids are doing well. “This is a good place for kids,” Holland said. “A school of 2,800, like Liberty, doesn’t work for everyone. Some of the kids here — why they thrive is because they know people care about them ... Kids are kids, and our kids are rising to the occasion.” During his time at La Paloma, Holland has completed a number of projects, but one he is most proud of is receiving recognition from the state, naming his school as a Model Continuation High School. He said they applied for the certification his first year, but the application didn’t make it over the hurdle.

“We applied the following year,” he said. “At that point I was here a little longer, had a better understanding of the school and what areas I wanted to focus on ... and the committee gave us the recognition.” Holland lives in Brentwood with his wife and two sons. He enjoys playing fantasy football and watching his sons’ sports games. His students are likely to see him running errands or taking his family out to dinner. To comment, visit www.thepress.net

When a buyer asks their lender what interest rate they can get, the lender will quote them that day’s rates for their type of loan and for their creditworthiness (debt ratio, credit score, assets, etc.). That rate is good for that day only, and rates sometimes change daily. The changes may be small, or quite large, in either direction. Although, in general most of the large changes are up, not down, because something negative happened to the market and lenders are scrambling to catch up to protect themselves. So how can you “lock-in” that rate? Most lenders do allow you to lock your rate. However, they can usually only do that once your loan package is completely approved which can take some time. Also, most lenders only allow you to lock your rate once you are in contract on a property so they have an address to work with (unless it’s a refinance, of course). There is usually a cost for a rate-lock (although some lenders don’t charge for

a fairly short rate-lock). The longer the lock is good for, the higher the cost of the lock. A 30-day lock is fairly common given that most escrows close in about 30 days. Asking for a 45 or 60-day lock may cost an additional .25% vs. a 30-day lock in fee/points. A shorter lock is less expensive because the risk to the lender is less. Some lenders do offer “float down” protection. That means if you lock at one rate, and rates go up, you still get the original rate. But if rates go down, you benefit from the lower rate. So that’s really the best of both worlds, however, read the fine print because there is likely a cost for that feature. When to lock is a huge question and it’s really difficult to predict what rates will do, especially in the short-term. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Brentwood Teen Theater readies new production Steve Kinsella, artistic director of the Brentwood Teen Theater, is all smiles. After the company’s wildly successful production of “Les Miserables” last spring, the atmosphere is a lot lighter at Saturday rehearsals. “After being in high gear with a complicated story like ‘Les Mis,’ I felt the kids needed something lighter and full of great dances and comedy,” said the professional director who calls Brentwood home. “Millie seemed the perfect choice.” Filled with fun flappers, dashing leading men and a villainess audiences

will love to hate, “Thoroughly Modern Millie JR.” is a clever adaptation of the six-time-Tony-Award-winning Best Musical and the Academy Award-winning film. “Thoroughly Modern Millie JR.” is the high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston. It’s 1922 in New York City, and a young Millie Dillmount has just moved to the Big Apple in search of a new life. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry: Millie’s wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage, and the man she

The Eldridge side of Eugene’s family gets together every two years somewhere in the U.S. The family’s Photo courtesy of Eugene Hammerson roots trace back to New England, where the first of Eugene’s relatives arrived in Connecticut in 1635. What’s a small town girl to do? “Thoroughly Modern Millie JR.” is a dance-heavy show with plenty of large numbers, featuring a star-turn in the lovable and courageous Millie Dillmount. This family favorite opens Friday, Aug. 16 and runs two weekends. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. There is a single matinee, Saturday Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. Performances are in the multipurpose room at Resurrection Ministries, 1275 Fairview Ave. in Brentwood. Many people have come to my office either alone or with their children asking me to prepare a Grant Deed to transfer their real property to their children. When I ask them why they want to do this, they usually respond with the following: (1) they want to avoid probate; (2) they do not need the property anymore; or (3) they can no longer afford the property. In response, I inform them that transferring the property to their children or a third party will avoid probate and while it may be true that they don’t need the property or can’t afford the property, there may be unintended consequences of the gift. First, gifting real property to a child means you will have no legal control over the real property. If you decide that you want or need the property back for some reason, the child will be under no legal obligation to transfer it back. Second, you may need the money. I tell people that just when you think you have plenty of money, something happens to change the situation. Therefore, until you are not here (i.e. you are sure you don’t need any more money), please do not give away your stuff! You have worked hard for your assets and you should control them as long as possible. If you live to be very old, you may need the money to help provide for your care. Third, your children will benefit from inheriting the property rather than receiving as a gift because of the tax benefits. When your children inherit your property, they will receive a full step-up in basis at your death.

For example, if you purchased the property for $50,000 and it is worth $500,000 at the time of your death, your children will receive a full step-up in basis from $50,000 to $500,000. If your children sell the property immediately after your death, they will not owe any capital gains because the basis was stepped-up to the fair market value at the time of your death. In contrast, if you gave them the same property before you died, your children would have to pay taxes on the gain between $50,000 and $500,000. Yuck!!! In most cases, it is a bad idea to gift real property to children while you are still living. If you really do not need the property, an alternative is to transfer the property into a Revocable Living Trust so your children will inherit the property after your death. Additionally, you can prepare a real property agreement to allow for your children to use or live in the property while you are alive. This way you retain control over the property and your children receive the step-up in basis upon your death. If you have any questions regarding the transfer of real property I see people Monday - Friday for a FREE 30 minute consultation in Walnut Creek and Brentwood. Back-to-school health checklist August marks back-to-school season, an ideal time for parents in California to help improve their children’s health. Before schedules become packed with classes, homework and extracurricular activities, here’s a back-to-school ‘health checklist’ to help give children a better chance to succeed inside and outside the classroom: Get a comprehensive eye exam About 80 percent of what children learn is through their eyes. With that in mind, a child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur before age 1, again at age 3, and before entering school. If no vision issues are detected, school-age children should have an exam at least once every two years. A school’s vision screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam, as screenings can miss conditions such as poor eye alignment, focusing issues and farsightedness. The inability to see clearly can affect a child’s physical, emotional and social development, which in turn can affect academic and athletic performance. Children often don’t complain if their vision isn’t normal, so it’s important to look for possible signs, such as squinting while reading or watching television, difficulty hitting or catching a ball or headaches when watching 3D movies. Also, be aware of digital eye strain, which is caused by prolonged use of computers or smartphones. Help your child practice healthy vision habits by keeping computer screens at least 30 inches from their eyes, resting their eyes every 20 minutes and blinking frequently

to avoid dry eyes. Get a dental cleaning Maintaining proper oral health matters more than just keeping a sparkling smile – it’s also important for good overall health. This is especially true for children, as untreated dental problems may diminish attention, decrease self-esteem and limit a child’s ability to learn at school. Tooth decay is largely preventable, yet it ranks as the most common chronic disease among children. About 33 percent of young kids (ages 2 to 8) have cavities in their baby teeth, and 20% of kids in the same age group have cavities in their adult teeth. With that in mind, parents should schedule regular dental exams every six months, especially at schools that require a back-toschool dental checkup. For parents with teenagers, it is important to recognize the risks of opioid addiction, especially after wisdom teeth removal. If you or a loved one is prescribed an opioid following a dental or other medical procedure,

ask your health care professional if there are alternatives, including over-the-counter pain relievers, such as a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Get recommended immunizations Many schools in California require children are properly immunized before they enter the classroom to help to avoid serious diseases and prevent other students from contracting them. Children’s vaccines are 90 to 99% effective and may help protect kids from diseases such as mumps, tetanus and chicken pox. By helping reduce the risk of contracting potentially preventable diseases such as the flu, children may have fewer school absences. Parents should check with their doctor to determine what immunizations are appropriate based on age. Most shots are given by the time children are 2 years old, but some are administered into the teen years. If your child runs a low-grade fever or has swelling in the shot location after the immunization, these minor side effects typically last a couple days. Apply a cool, wet washcloth on the sore area to help ease discomfort, but check with your doctor about the appropriateness of over-the-counter pain medications. Back-to-school season is an exciting time for many children and their parents. Consider these guidelines to help encourage your child’s health and success throughout the school year. – Courtesy Dr. John Chang, senior medical director, UnitedHealthcare of California

I’m confused

Editor: As a citizen of these United States, I am really confused. We vote to have Congress and the Senate to represent us and to enforce the laws of our country, but now I am seeing our representatives are more concerned about people coming here illegally than the citizens they represent. And to think we’re paying them. On top of that, they made our cities and state a safe haven for them by making our state a sanctuary state. I don’t remember voting on that. Now they want to give them free housing, medical, food and education. Now what! Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is coming to round them up, even after they have had their day in court, and our democrats are aiding and abating criminals in the name of humanity. They also talk about rule of law, which they are constantly

How to not be a racist

Editor: Last week, Gordon Lyster responded to a previous letter by Kevin Cunningham, but Lyster’s response makes no sense. Cunningham pointed out several racist things that Trump said or did and how that makes him racist. He pointed out how Trump fans are racist for supporting a racist like Trump, his racism and his racist policies. And Lyster’s said, “Folks who dislike Trump or political opinions other than theirs are called racist.” How ridiculous! (To quote Lyster). That has nothing to do with Cunningham’s letter. Disagreeing with pro-choice doesn’t get you called racist. Disagreeing on taxing rich people equally doesn’t get you called racist. You know what gets you called racist? Saying or doing racist things like Trump does. Supporting racists like Trump and making noncredible excuses for his racism also gets you called racist. If you don’t want to be called racist, the answer is simple. Don’t say racist things or do racist things like Trump does, and don’t support racists like Trump. Thank you. Shari Parker Brentwood

Local duo feel the need for speed by Patrick Gordon

Jim Higgins, a retired fire captain who lives in Brentwood, with the bike he’ll be riding at the AMA Land Speed Grand Championship later this month.

Correspondent

Two local men have turned their passion into an ongoing quest for motorcycle land speed records around the world. Their next stop is the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Land Speed Grand Championship, which will be held Aug. 25 to 30 at Bonneville Speedway in northwestern Utah. David Damon, 62, is a retired manufacturing engineer who lives in Oakley. His friend Jim Higgins, 66, retired after 29 years with the Vallejo Fire Department — 20 as fire captain — and now lives in Brentwood. They head to Utah later this month with a couple fellow riders from Australia and the goal of adding to their already impressive list of world records and accomplishments. For Damon, land speed racing is an opportunity to live life to the fullest. After being diagnosed with stage four cancer in 2010, his outlook on life changed.

“Before, I defined myself as a manufacturing engineer,” Damon said. “Today, I will tell you I want to race. I want to live life for me. I wanted to redefine myself, and I found it in land speed racing.” In 2011, Damon met Higgins at El Mirage Dry Lake, a land speed track in the Mojave Desert. Higgins helped Da-

mon modify his motorcycle, and they hit it off immediately. They discovered they were practically neighbors — Higgins lived in Pleasant Hill at the time and Damon lived in Walnut Creek. They’ve been racing together ever since. Higgins started riding at 15 and began racing in Bonneville in 2000. He vol-

unteered to work as an EMT with a race team and found himself drawn to racing. Higgins now competes as part of the Black Art Racing Team with Australian riders Greg Watters and Kim Krebs. Watters holds several Australian records, and Krebs has been the fastest Australian woman land speed racer since 2006. Higgins is no slouch himself, having won several “red hats,” an award given to riders who not only set speed records above 200 mph, but exceed speeds expected of a bike in a particular class. To earn one of his red hats, he beat the previous land speed record by more than 20 mph. The two work on the bikes themselves, with the assistance of Damon’s son-in-law, heavily modifying the 600 cubic centimeter (cc) and 750 cc engines. More than 300 pounds of lead are added to the bike’s frame as a ballast to ensure as much weight is on the rear tire as possible, which adds traction and aids acceleration. see Speed page 16A

SeaWolves swimmer qualifies for Olympic Trials “He’s kind of on a mission,” said Craig Carson, Comforti’s coach at Heritage and now again with the Brentwood SeaWolves. “His goal for this year was to make the Olympic Trial cut times. He’s accomplished some of that and feels he still has a chance to do it in those other two events.” The Olympic Trials, scheduled for June 2020 in Omaha, Nebraska, will likely pit Comforti against about 40 swimmers in the preliminary rounds, with 16 swimmers qualifying for the semifinals and eight for the finals. Competitors must finish in the top two in most events to make the Olympic team. “He’s right on that verge of cracking that top 16 (in the 200-meter individual medley) and getting an opportunity to maybe make the finals at the Olympic Trials,” Carson said. For Comforti, his progression in the sport has been a natural rise in recent years.

In the winter of his junior year of high school, he decided to focus solely on swimming, and he began attracting the attention of colleges during the second semester of his senior year, eventually settling on Arizona State. There he continued to progress, and two of his top achievements were qualifying for the NCAA Championships his junior year as one of the nation’s 30 best Division I swimmers, and helping the once-struggling Sun Devils swim team rise to become the nation’s seventh best — also in his junior season. Comforti has been perfecting his stroke and improving his physical and mental strength as a return member of the Brentwood SeaWolves after graduating from Arizona State earlier this year. “I just work as hard as I can to put myself in the position to hit those goals that I

have set out,” Comforti said, “and if I don’t, I get up and try again.” Carson said Comforti is constantly learning and is intrinsically motivated to succeed. “He started out just like a lot of other kids I worked with over the years,” Carson said. “He’s taken that and done probably the most with it of any kids I have worked with. It’s pretty exciting.” Over the next several months, Carson said, the student-coach duo will continue pushing for those unmet 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke Olympic Trial qualifying times. Comforti also plans to compete in the US Open in Georgia, in December. The 2020 United States Olympic Trials will run from June 21-28 at the CHI Health Center in Nebraska.

Former Heritage High School swim star Danny Comforti qualified for three events in next year’s Olympic Trials during the recent U.S. National Swimming Championship at Stanford University. Comforti, a recent graduate of Arizona State University and current member of the Brentwood SeaWolves, secured his spot in the 200-meter breaststroke (2 minutes, 17.59 seconds), 200-meter individual medley (2:2.72) and 100-meter butterfly (54.11). The required times are 2:17.89, 2:4.09 and 54.19 in the three events, respectively. He still has about 10 months to qualify in other events and is aiming to make the cut in the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke. He fell just 3/10ths of a second short of the needed time in the 50-meter freestyle, and 2/10ths of a second shy of the needed time in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Name: Samantha Calkins School: Liberty High School Year: Sophomore Sport: Wrestling Coach: Phil Freeman About: Wrestling isn’t a sport in which most kids would think about competing, but Samantha Calkins isn’t like most kids. For the last five years, she has put the time in on the mat to become a star wrestler, and this summer, her efforts have paid off. Samantha placed third in the nation in the cadet division at 180 pounds this year, earning her All-American honors at the USMC Freestyle National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. “I like wrestling because I get to challenge myself,” Samantha said. “I’ve met a lot of new people through wrestling, especially my best friends.” The Brentwood student enjoys wrestling for both the Delta Wrestling Club and Liberty High School, and she feels supported by her coaches, teammates and family. Until her wrestling programs re-

sume in October, she plans to stay in top shape by playing water polo and doing CrossFit. Future: As a sophomore, Samantha hasn’t received any offers from colleges, but she hopes to continue wrestling. She plans to major in psychology or kinesiology. Coach’s quote: “Sam was ready for the national tournament,” said Freeman. “We specifically trained Greco for three months straight, and she used it magnificently, throwing her opponents to the mat and pinning them in the first round. Top three in the nation her freshman year is a great honor.”

validate record-setting times. Confusion set in when, after multiple inspections, the engine measured at only 600 cc. “It was a perfectly good motor,” he said. “We were just asking it to do something it was never supposed to be able to do. Somebody sold me a motor under false pretenses.” Because it was a different engine than Higgins listed on the registration, it didn’t count at all. To this day, he still hears about it from his peers in the land speed racing community. “It’s going to take me years to live that one down,” Higgins joked. This year, they’ll again try to beat personal bests and set records in multiple motorcycle classes. Higgins’ long-term goal is to earn his Class AA license from the Southern California Timing Association, an accomplishment that requires at least two runs exceeding 250 mph. “To run 250 mph naked at Bonneville, I’m not sure it’s been done,” said Higgins. “There are a few guys who have done it at pavement events we’ve been to, but the pavement is easier because of the traction.” Damon will ride his 2006 Suzuki Hayabusa and compete in the class M1650-AG, — a “naked” class with engines no larger than 1,650 cc. He wants to break the record of 196.053 mph set in 2007. For more information about the AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, visit www.americanmotorcyclist.com. For more information on the Black Art Racing team, visit www.blackartracing.com.

Both riders participate in the “naked” class of racing, which prohibits fairings or aerodynamic aides. This makes for some unique riding conditions, particularly when pursuing world record speeds. “I hang on, into the wind at 200 mph, while the front wheel is drifting back and forth about six inches to the right and left,” Damon said. “The rear wheel is spinning, moving back and forth like a dirt bike, with a mind of its own, while sidewinds push you towards the edge of the track.” Despite the danger, Damon says it makes him feel alive and want more. However, it’s not all success stories for the pair. Higgins described a situation last year that prevented him from setting another world record at Bonneville and left him embarrassed among his peers. He registered for the 750 cc class and struggled to get the motorcycle above 170 mph. The record was 160 mph, but his calculations showed the bike should be able to run at about 192 mph. But no matter how he tried, he couldn’t get there. “We tuned and tuned, scratched our heads and looked at the data,” Higgins said. Yet, they couldn’t figure out why the bike wasn’t going as fast as expected. “That hurt,” Damon recalled, “watching you guys work on that thing for four days.” After Higgins’ run — which was still good enough for a new record, despite the disappointment — officials were inspecting the motorcycle, as is customary to

of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource. com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/ TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2017-01334-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. As president of the board of trustees, Turner wants the district to be effective in its use of resources to contribute to student’s educational experience. He said he feels encouraged by Guana and the efforts of organizations like BPiE. As Guana continues familiarizing himself with his new home, he said he looks forward to celebrating the successes he’s finding, and to working in a great district. “I love it here,” he said with a smile. “I can’t stress this enough: We just have

ANTIOCH TEAM PREVIEW

Panthers in search of fresh start this season by JESUS CANO Correspondent After earning the No. 1 seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs last season, the Antioch Panthers appeared to have their second opportunity at taking home the crown. However, a slow-sailing field goal in double overtime saw No. 8 Vintage upset top-seeded Antioch 24-21. “That’s all they talk about,” said head coach John Lucido. “They took the team a little lightly. They understand that. Lucky, all those guys are young and they know what not to do now.” Junior quarterback Rocco Borelli will be handed the rock. Last season, three-year veteran Willem Karnthong spent some time on the shelf with multiple injuries and illness. Thus, Borelli carries experience this season. “He’s improved so much,” said Lucido. “He is a very talented young man. We changed our passing system a little bit and he’s picked it up fast. He has a strong arm.” The running back duo of seniors Jaysn Wade and Dwight

Antioch running back Dwight Turner, seen here last season against Freedom, figures to be a key offensive contributor for the Panthers this season. Press file photo

Turner lit up the backfield and both will be key in orchestrating offensive production. The duo combined for a total of 1,265 rushing yards in 2018. Wade battled the year with a thigh injury, but managed to secure an offer from Georgetown University. The size up front of Antioch will serve important with 6-foot-2

inch senior Kwamayne Sims and 6-foot-7-inch junior Jailen Weaver. Gaston Dorsey is also a good interior body. The wide receiver core will see Wade and Turner line up in the slot. University of California, Berkeley commit Dejuan Butler adds plenty of speed at receiver. Lucido, like many coaches,

will be using his players on both sides of the ball. The Panthers transitioned to using a 3-3 stack formation this year. “We have so many talented athletes and want to use as much of them as we can,” said Lucido. Sims, Weaver and Dorsey will be running the gauntlet, playing defensive line as well. Linebackers Raider Vreonis and Oggo Delaney will anchor that position. Delaney saw significant playing time while Vreonis was called up to the varsity team in the playoffs and ended up starting for the Panthers. Borelli will use his 6-foot 1-inch frame to his team’s advantage by seeing some time on defense, too. Donavan Fells is also one of Antioch’s key skill players. He will be playing defensive back while Wade will play on both sides of the field. Butler settles in nicely at cornerback, the position he is being recruited for at Cal. Antioch has improved steadily over the years. After making the playoffs in 2014 for the first time in a while, the Panthers have not missed the playoffs and had a division I championship appearance.

DEER VALLEY TEAM PREVIEW

Inexperienced Wolverines hope to impress by KYLE SZYMANSKI Staff Writer Four of five Deer Valley High School all-league players from last season’s 4-6 squad have graduated, and now a host of mostly inexperienced returners and promising newcomers will work to push the Wolverines into the future this season. The squad, which last year picked up its first Bay Valley Athletic League win since 2013 en route to finishing its league slate 1-4, will need to replace its starting quarterback (Joshua Scott), leading rusher (Patrick Robinson), top receiver (Robinson) and best tackler (Logan Fontaine) in 2019, and plenty of candidates have stepped forward. “They have a lot of potential, but very little playing experience,” said head coach Robert Hubbard. Senior Willie Williams, who saw action as running back last season, and newcomer Pacifica Tumanuvao may be in a battle to start at quarterback, after previous starter Scott graduated in the spring. Hubbard said Williams is an explosive player with the ability to make throws all over the field, while the 6-foot, 225-pound, nimble Tumanuvao has a world of potential and could

ultimately find himself at tight end, running back, linebacker or on the defensive line. “He could be a real special player for us,” said Hubbard, who described Tumanuvao as “huge” and as a player who “can really, really move.” Senior Larin Hamlin (six carries for 82 yards in his only varsity game last season) appears set to become the team’s starting running back, replacing the graduated Robinson — an all-league player and the team’s leading rusher, who racked up 2,037 yards on the ground in three varsity seasons. The team’s eventual quarterback and Hamlin will both rely on what Hubbard describes as a very inexperienced offensive line, comprising all-league

senior Jacob Caguyong, returning senior Kyair Stewart, returning junior Keion Venson along with several undisclosed newcomers. Returning junior Reggie Hill (12 catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns last year) will join forces with senior James Terrell Knaules (six receptions for 169 yards and two touchdowns in eight games last season) and newcomer Jaloni Washington — a senior — to lead the Wolverines’ receiving corps. Washington looked especially impressive during the off-season, Hubbard said. The Wolverines’ defense will also take on a different look this season, following the graduation of all-league

offensive and defensive lineman King Matu, all-league linebacker Fontaine and the talented Scott, who also played defensive back. Caguyong, Stewart and Venson figure to anchor the defensive line as twoway players, while senior Kobe Decuir will lead the linebacking core, and Hill, Knaules, Washington and senior David Lockett (who’s appeared in a handful of varsity games) will hold down the secondary. Deer Valley’s non-league schedule features four non-Division I playoff teams from a year ago, including North Coast Section Division II squads American Canyon and Campolindo, the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division IV Wood High (Vacaville) and North Coast Section Division 4 Kennedy. American Canyon, Wood and Kennedy all reached the second round of their respective playoffs last season, while Campolindo reached the semifinals. The Wolverines will also clash with North Coast Section Division I foe Dublin in non-league play. The Gaels finished 4-6 last season and missed out on the playoffs. Deer Valley opens league play at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 at powerhouse Pittsburg. “I am really fortunate that a lot of the players who are coming in

FREEDOM TEAM PREVIEW

Revamped Freedom Falcons set to soar by KYLE SZYMANSKI Staff Writer After last year’s 9-4 campaign that led Freedom all the way to the North Coast Section (NCS) Division I championship game for the second consecutive year, graduation hit the Falcons hard. Only three of the 14 all-league selections from the 2018 team return to the Falcons this season, but a younger group of players and a handful of returners hope they, too, will take flight. “It’s a work in progress, but we are excited about the season,” said Freedom head coach Andrew Cotter. The Falcons will need to replace their leading 2018 passer (Joey Aguilar) and their top four receivers (Giles Jackson, Mekel Ealy, Jaimier Parker and Kimahni Tolefree) on offense, while also working to overcome the loss of their two best tacklers (allleague linebacker Hunter McAllister and all-league defensive back Daniel Roanhorse) on defense. Returning senior quarterback Jake Byrne, who completed 31 of 75 passes for 456 yards and nine touchdowns in eight games last season, will assume the full-time quarterback

role this year. Returning senior Roy Lee, the team’s 2018 leading rusher (119 attempts for 751 yards and two touchdowns), returns to anchor a run game that will also feature his brother, newcomer junior Jordan Lee. Returning junior Seth Hartshorn and returning senior Nolan Phillips will hold down the offensive line, along with newcomers, senior Angel

Gonzalez, junior William Baldwin and Jacob Stephano. The receiving corps is expected to feature returning seniors Juan Sanchez and Julian Partida and promising juniors Matthew Quesada and Deniro Killian Jr. Defensively, returning junior Caleb Hunter will anchor the line, along with Baldwin, junior Gavyn Tobin and senior Tyler Miller. Familiar faces Brett Bausola and

Robert Garcia — both all-league second team members a year ago — will hold down the linebacking core with fellow returners, junior Tyler Lepolo and senior Trevor Fleming. Lee is also expected to hold down the team’s secondary with a number of other undisclosed candidates, Cotter said. “We had a great group of seniors last year and there is a lot of production offensively and defensively that we are losing,” Cotter said, “but we are excited about the younger guys who are coming through, and hopefully they will fill in those shoes that the other guys left.” In traditional Freedom fashion, the Falcons aren’t backing down from the area’s top talent, with games scheduled against five playoff teams from a year ago, including a matchup with reigning NCS Division 1 champion San Ramon Valley, who grounded the Falcons 28-21 in the section championship game last season. Freedom’s non-league schedule also features 2018 NCS Division I semifinalists Cal High, fellow 2018 NCS Division I playoff team San Leandro, and Turlock and Antelope

HERITAGE TEAM PREVIEW

Improved Patriots determined to shine by KYLE SZYMANSKI Staff Writer After a 1-9 season last year, Brentwood’s Heritage High Patriots are taking the field this season with a renewed sense of optimism. The young 2018 team is now stronger, more mature and better prepared for the challenging schedule that lies ahead. “We are reaping the benefits of an incoming senior class that is pretty talented, and they definitely don’t want to repeat what happened last year,” said head coach Don Sanders, who noted the team should feature a strong run game, an efficient passing attack and continued growth defensively. The upstart Patriots return four of six 2018 all-league players, including second-team wide receiver Kendrick Shaw, honorablemention offensive lineman Adam Smith, second-team linebacker Greg Filardo and honorable-mention quarterback Trevor Moorman — although Moorman is slated to play wide receiver, with returning junior Asher Haynes taking over the quarterback position, Sanders

said. The returning one-two punch of junior Hanai Muhammad and senior Tony Zalec figure to hold down the running back position, while returning seniors Kevin Moore and Smith along with returning junior Jacob Fucci, will anchor the offensive line, joined by new juniors Vicente Hughes and Ajay Lozada.

Returning senior James Williams and 2018 all-leaguer Shaw will be Haynes’ primary wide receiver targets, Sanders said. “The kids are working hard and we feel we are making progress,” Sanders said. “We are further along this year than we were at this time last year.” Returning juniors Gerrick Dacpano, Alex Peterson and

Bennett Ricker will join Smith on the defensive line, while the linebacking core is expected to feature Filardo, Fucci and senior newcomer Alec Brannen. Shaw, Williams, Muhammad, Zalec and sophomore newcomer Jayden Ennis will see time in the secondary, Sanders said. “The team’s confidence is much higher this season than it was last season,” Sanders said. If the Patriots are to improve, they’ll have to face down a challenging schedule that includes reigning North Coast Section (NCS) Division I champion San Ramon Valley, NCS Division I semifinalists California, 2018 NCS Division I quarterfinalists Amador Valley, and James Logan, who also reached the NCS Division I playoffs last season. Then comes grueling Bay Valley Athletic League play against the likes of reigning state champion Liberty, NCS Division I runnerup Freedom and perennial powerhouse Pittsburg, who qualified for the elite NCS Open Division playoffs a year ago. “It’s very loaded,” Sanders said of the team’s schedule. “It’s

LIBERTY TEAM PREVIEW

Reigning state champ Lions back on prowl by JESUS CANO Correspondent In a historic football season, Brentwood’s Lions put Corn Country on the map by winning the 2018 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 1A state championship. After claiming the Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) and a CIF state regional title, Liberty’s season culminated in Norwalk, California, with a 19-17 victory over Southern California powerhouse Sierra Canyon. Now it’s safe to say that everyone in the North Coast Section (NCS) has their eyes locked in on Liberty. “I think it gives them more confidence,” said third-year head coach Ryan Partridge. “There is high expectations and we’re going to meet them head on. Right now, we’re worried about beating ourselves and getting better each day.” Headlining the team is threeyear varsity veteran Jay Butterfield.

Liberty running back Brenden Bell, seen here last season, will be just one of a few talented running backs on the Lions roster this season. Press file photo

The senior announced his commitment to the University of Oregon during the spring and has the numbers to back up why he’s one of the most recruited pro-style quarterbacks in the nation. Many of Liberty’s aerial threats graduated, but senior Cody Muth is one of Butterfield’s few returning targets. Muth caught Liberty’s only

scoring play in its loss against De La Salle in the NCS Open Championship. 6-foot, 2-inch tight end Peyton Borelli will also be a threat for Liberty. A pair of seniors is returning at running back with Brenden Bell and Darrion Bartley. Bell saw some carries last season behind former Lion Tyerell Sturges-Cofer. offseason. Bell and Bartley will have a pretty solid group to create lanes for them. Payton Zdroik moved over to center. He was awarded All-BVAL first-team honors on both sides of the ball last year. Akili Calhoun and Cel’mone Kennedy each made second team AllBVAL last season and will be factors in the Lions’ run game. Many of these athletes will be two-way players. Calhoun recently started gaining offers from Pac-12 schools like Cal and Washington State, while Zdroik has reeled in offers from Cal Poly and Colorado State. “They never have a bad practice,” Partridge said. “They’re all good.” Mason Padilla anchors linebacker core. The senior stepped up big time in the state championship game with the absence of the 2017 defensive MVP Nicky Einess. Padilla recorded 15 tackles in that game.

Smooth Butterfield hopes to lead Liberty back to glory by KYLE SZYMANSKI Staff Writer With the 2019 high school football season kicking off in a few weeks, East County residents will get one more year-long shot to watch senior Liberty quarterback Jay Butterfield. And if the past is any indication, spectators won’t want to look away. Butterfield — considered the nation’s third best pro-style quarterback in the 2020 class — guided the Lions

football team to its first North Coast Section (NCS) and state titles in backto-back seasons, all while launching his personal stock skyward. The 6-foot-6-inch, 206-pound, four-star senior — son of former Stanford University and professional quarterback Mark Butterfield — fielded at least 15 Division I college scholarship offers before verbally committing to the University of Oregon in May, turning down the Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin and a slew

of other Pac-12 schools, among other 27th-straight section title win. the record books, Jay has his eye on colleges. The loss, however, didn’t keep at least two new goals this season: “I really couldn’t think of a con Jay down for long. winning another state title and seekfor Oregon,” Jay said. “I really like the In the ensuing two weeks, he ing revenge against the one team, campus, the facilities, the coaches.” went on to guide the Lions to a 33- De La Salle, that left a blemish on his Jay has completed 270 of 21 win over Jose’s Valley A Christian perfect high school A good smile can San open doors. PITTSBURG TEAM PREVIEW

Revamped Pirates look to repeat success by JESUS CANO Correspondent Over the three-year existence of the elite North Coast Section (NCS) Open Division playoffs, Pittsburg High School has never been absent. Pittsburg enters this season having lost some talent, but if the past is any indication, don’t count the Pirates out. The quarterback spot is up for grabs, which has brought out a strong competition between seniors Jerry Johnson and Santino Chavez. Both players have varsity experience and excelled in Pittsburg’s seven-on-seven team this summer. “They’re both starter caliber and both have gotten better as the years have gone on,” said 18-year head coach Vic Galli. “It’s a good competition. I can envision both of them playing. They’re doing really well.” No matter which quarterback wins the battle, one thing is certain: There will be quality targets at their disposal. Jonny Blackmon III leads the receiving group, and James Battle adds depth to the team. Pittsburg’s line is one of the team’s

Lions from page 6B Senior Anthony Orgolio missed out last season with an injury, but has experience under his belt — starting in the NCS Division I championship game in 2017 versus Freedom. Players will be battling for position in the secondary, with Bartley, Bell and Muth all seeing time on defense. Returning players like Josh Dinkins and Glenn Borlangan will also

fortes. Sami Fonongaloa and Ryan Lange bring in offers from Division I schools. Mark Hutchinson is another lineman highlighted by Galli. They’re going to have a talented running back in Avant Muldrow to block for. He made second team All-BVAL last season. Muldrow also received AllBay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) honors on defense and is considered by many to be one of the best allaround athletes in the league. On defense, the Pirates return many players at linebacker, with seniors

Joseph Luna and Alamana Tupouata along with junior Maurice Jamison. The Harts twin brothers, consisting of seniors Damuarion and Damuarya, will also contribute for the Pirates. “After having a ton of top-flight guys and returners in 2018, the best part of the 2019 offseason has been seeing this group find themselves as a unit,” said defensive coordinator Charlie Ramirez. “Every day, they seemed to grow as a unit more and more. The staff has been meticulous getting the incoming juniors up to par

with the returning seniors.” Two new faces come to Pittsburg’s receiving core. Senior Brian Pierce comes into the season with his first Division I offer from the Air Force. Freshman Rashid Williams is also expected to shine this season. “He is mature beyond his years,” said Galli. “He can hold his own. I can only imagine how he’s going to look like when he’s out of here. He puts in good work, he’s a humble kid and a good player. His future is pretty bright.” Pittsburg also has high hopes for Keointe Guess on both offense and defense. Along with him, the Pirates expect juniors Daytwuan Pearson, Areon Williams and Lamont Fortenberry to excel in skill positions. Kiani Washington, Carlos Warren and Mike Weiver are newcomers who will solidify the offensive and defensive lines. Pittsburg is not afraid to play anyone, and year after year, its nonleague schedule continues to demonstrate that. The orange and black scheduled a good mixture of opponents, like consistent Central Coast Section

be competing for spots. It’s no secret the Lions lost key pieces to last year’s team, but they have a solid core of young players along with some athletes who transferred to Liberty. Justice Jackson transferred from Berean Christian and will strengthen Liberty’s offense. He has three Division I offers and Partridge plans on using him at running back and wide

receiver. Jackson will need to sit out the first half of the season, however, due to the transfer rule. “He’s fast, physical and has a great knowledge of the game,” said Partridge. “He is one heck of a player.” James McNorton is another transfer player, this time coming from Heritage. The 6-foot, 5-inch athlete can play both offensive and defensive

lines. The University of Wyoming has expressed interest in him. Jermaine Land and Leo Reichold make up another pair of two-way players named by Partridge who will have an immediate impact on the new campaign. The open division is being eliminated after the CIF ruling preventing runners-up from going to any state tournaments – meaning the old format will return, in which

Pittsburg running back and cornerback Avant Muldrow, seen here last season against Liberty, is considered one of the best all around athletes in the league. Press file photo

contenders Wilcox and Serra, along with Division II powerhouse Bishop O’Dowd. all NCS teams play in their respective divisions. For everyone in the BVAL, a trip to that state championship now has to go through De La Salle in the NCS Division I championship. It’s an obstacle the Lions are ready to face. Despite the Lions’ successful season, it was hard for them to find opponents in non-league play. They kickoff the season on the road against Vacaville and Oakdale.
