An Antioch group known as The Interfaith Peace Project will be putting its own spin on the International Day of Peace, celebrated Sept. 21. Since its inception by the United Nations in 1981, the event that’s also known as World Peace Day has been celebrated by nations, political groups and churches all over the world. Under the auspices of Father Tom Bonacci, the Interfaith group is planning the International Day of Peace Celebration for East Contra Costa, a full weekend of religious diversity held in the name of peace and understanding. “It’s been somewhat low-key,” said Walter Ruehlig of past events. Ruelig, with wife Cynthia, heads up the local Day of Peace steering committee. “But this year, it’s happening on a grander scale.” Indeed, numerous churches from all over the area plan to attend and participate in the weekend’s events: Antioch Christian Center, United Methodist Church, Community Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg, Seventh Day Adventist Church, First Congregational Church of Antioch, the Hindu community, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Islamic Center of East Bay, the Sikh community, Sufism Reoriented,
Baha’i Faith and many other religions. The event will be posted on YouTube and rebroadcast on a local Comcast cable channel. There is also talk of a published picture book memento, according to Ruehlig. In 2002, the UN officially marked Sept. 21 as the International Day of Peace. Since that day falls on a Tuesday this year, the Interfaith group plans to celebrate over the weekend of the 18th and 19th in order to help the community prepare for the actual Day of Peace. “We want to bring more of a civic presence this year,” Ruehlig said. “To raise people’s awareness to the 21st by leading a more peaceful life, doing more witnessing, and monitoring thoughts and actions.” The event kicks off on Saturday evening at St. Ignatius Church, where a large tent will be raised and will house a wide variety of books on all religions for visitors to explore. Highlights for the evening will include the LDS choir singing at 6:15 p.m. and an Interfaith Candle Lighting from participants who will dress in their common garb. Creek cleanup volunteers needed by Samie Hartley Staff Writer In East County, residents don’t need to travel to the beach to take part in the California Coastal Cleanup event on Sept. 25. Marsh Creek might seem insignificant compared to the state’s massive coastline, but even Mother Nature’s waterways need a little TLC. To celebrate California Coastal Cleanup, Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed, along with hundreds of volunteers, will take part in the annual Marsh Creek Cleanup to help free the peaceful creek of pollutants and unnatural clutter such as plastics, food wrappers, styrofoam and aluminum cans. “You’d be surprised what we find during the cleanup,” said Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed Executive Director Diane Burgis. “We find furniture, broken toys, car parts and all sorts of things that aren’t meant to be in or near the creek.” So what’s the strangest thing they’ve found in the past six years? “One time we found two big bags filled with dog hair,” Burgis recalled. “We also found a purse with a dead crawdad in it once and a few other unusual things that wouldn’t be appropriate to put in the newspaper, but the important thing is that it’s all removed from the creek.” Last year, the Friends and more than 600 volunteers collected more than 2½ tons of trash from six sites. lected nearly 5 tons of trash during Earth Day cleanups and a special Martin Luther King Day cleanup. “It’s not that there is a lot of trash along Marsh Creek; we’re just really good at cleaning up,” Burgis said. “The community really comes out to support this event. What’s great about our event is that it’s a community event perfect for families. At the cleanup you’ll see little kids picking up bits of trash alongside our senior citizens. Everyone can do their part, and afterward we have a little party to thank everyone for their help.” Burgis said people come back year after year to help with the cleanup because they know they are doing something good in their own backyard, but the effects are felt throughout the ecosystem by keeping pollutants from traveling downstream to other waterways. “That’s why we do this,” Burgis said. “We want to make sure that we catch all of these little bits of trash before they make their way to larger bodies of water. About 80 percent of all ocean pollutants originate from an inland source. That’s us, so we need to do our part. We work really hard to clean up the creek and the surrounding area so that we’re not part of that statistic.” This year, the Friends are looking to make their event even greener by asking participants to collect trash in buckets and reusable containers, so that they don’t add see Creek page 20A

Crushing experience in footwear selection I learned a hard lesson this summer. Never take your toes for granted. I never gave my toes much attention, aside from the occasional pedicure and polishing. I don’t care for pedicures because the minute the technician starts rubbing the bottom of my foot with HANGIN’ IN that rough pumice HERE stone, I’m not responsible for the involuntary spasming of my foot. It is so ticklish, it’s almost painful! Pedicures are supposed to be relaxing, but not for VICKI me. Anyway, my toes MCKENNA have always served me well and I guess I should have appreciated them more … Two of my kids were invited on a camping trip with my brother and his family. I cannot stand camping, and anyone who knows me will tell you I absolutely loathe it. Thankfully, other members of my family enjoy it and generously invite my kids along so they can experience the joy of sleeping in the dirt, swatting at bees, applying large amounts of mosquito repellent and using primitive outhouses in the middle of the night.

My sister-in-law asked if I could send along some cases of water and such, and I happily obliged. My 8-year-old daughter in tow, I headed to Winco, where I loaded a shopping cart with four cases of water, four boxes of Capri Suns, two cases of soda, two gallons of milk, and of course a couple of six-packs of beer (for me.) This was one heavy cart. While waiting in the checkout line, a cashier told me she was opening up another checkstand and invited me over to her line. I pushed the large barge of beverages away from me and then gave it a big tug toward me, rolling the cart over my bare baby toe. Who would have thought flip-flops could make you so vulnerable? The pain was excruciating. Tears filled my eyes. I winced and froze there for a moment. I glanced down at my little baby digit already turning black. Oh wait, that was the black rubber from the wheel that had rolled over my toe. I hobbled to the checkout line trying to shake it off. My daughter helped as best she could, loading the groceries. I limped across the parking lot, leaning on the cart, and finally sat down in my car. My toe was bleeding and puffing up like a dried date. I drove home eager to put some ice on it. JUST DON’T DO IT When you are applying for a loan modification, it’s important to keep in mind that this process is similar to when you applied for the loan originally. Your lender will want to see a bunch of documents from you (income verification, bank statements, hardship letter, etc.) in order to make a financial decision. In this case, they aren’t making a decision if they should lend you more money, but they are deciding if they should lower your rate, change your terms or even lower your balance. All these decisions will cost your lender money. They may consider doing that if modifying your loan will lose them less money than the other options. But my point here is that they are making a financial decision based on the information you provide. That means that you need to be 100% truthful with them about your income, your assets, your liabilities, your hardship, etc. If they make a decision to modify your loan based on the information you provided, and they find out later that information wasn’t 100% factual, they could come after you later for loan fraud. Loan fraud has a maximum penalty of 30 years in pris-
on AND a fine of up to $1M. Good luck getting a job with a fraud conviction on your record. Think no one will look at your file? Think they are too busy to audit their own files? You could be right, lenders are swamped right now. But did you know there is no statute of limitations for fraud? And I just read a report in a prominent mortgage trade newspaper how one company just reviewed 80,000 of the loan mods they did last year, and they found discrepancies or outright fraud in many of them. They will pursue some of these cases.

Kids Helping Kids reaches $100K goal by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer It took 53 lemonade stands, five car washes, six ice cream parties and a string of assorted fundraisers to reach their $100,000 goal, but for the kids behind the Kids Helping Kids (KHK) organization, the end definitely justified the means. “It shows people that when you put your mind together with your heart, you can accomplish anything,” said 13-year-old KHK Co-founder Tyler Page. “It’s a really good feeling.” Tyler has learned a lot about feeling good in the past couple of years since he and his mom, Laura, founded the nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children in need. The Brentwood family started the group in 2007 after Tyler saw an episode on “Oprah” featuring a story on child trafficking in Ghana. Touched by the plight of the children half a world away, Tyler began raising money for a group in Africa that rescues children from slavery, and in 17 months raised $50,000. A mere 18 months after that, he reached his goal of $100,000 and has since announced a new goal of $500,000. It’s an ambitious undertaking, but for the open-hearted young man and his group of dozens of friends, raising the bar is about more than bringing in the bucks. “The $500,000 seems like the next logical number to reach, and after that we’ll go for a million,” said Tyler. “It may take a while, maybe a long time, but it doesn’t matter as long as we keep doing what our hearts tell us to do.” Lisa Toth, whose 13-year-old daughter Cameron is a member of KHK, said the organization does more than fundraise; it raises confident kids: “I think being involved in KHK has given Cameron an assurance in herself and an empathy for others that has really made her a better, stronger person. The group has shown her that everyone is the same regardless of their background, color or ethnicity. It’s a great group.” Toth isn’t the only local family that has benefited from involvement in KHK. Addie Duncan, 7, created Addie’s Art Festival and spent a month drawing and creating her own artwork, displaying it at local jazz and art festival and donating her profits to KHK. And Brentwood Idol winner Jordyn Foley surprised everyone in July when she donated her $100 prize from the competition to KHK, saying that the group had helped her to become a more confident person and that she wanted her winnings to go toward helping children less fortunate. “My personal experience has been one of enormous gratitude and humility,” said Laura. “The many incredible people who do amazing things to make this world a better place – we could not do any of it if we didn’t have the love and support of these heroes.” And for Tyler and the rest of the group, that’s what KHK is really all about: inspiration and support. “It feels really good, like I’ve touched someone’s heart,” said Tyler. “And it’s just a really good feeling that I’ve made an impact on their life that made them go out and do something they believe in.” For more information on Kids Helping Kids, visit www.kidzhelpingkids.org or call 925-759-4806.

TEA Party: It’s about smaller government by Sean Ackley Brentwood resident The TEA party movement is about limited government, a government where we are represented just enough to protect the rights we inherited and are a natural part of us. Government never gives rights. In UEST fact, the constituCOMMENT tion clearly binds the government’s actions to allow the states and the people the most rights capable under law. If anyone tells you the TEA party is about anything else, they don’t understand the movement. I agree that you will hear topics like lower taxes, fiscal responsibility, open carry, police state, world government and FEMA camps. These topics, although important, are simply a result of government getting too big in the first place. If we simply went back to a limited government, these problems would resolve themselves. People may not understand that “limited” government does not need to mean small or ineffective govern-

ment. On the contrary, the government we institute as a people will be the size we need it to be in order to provide for the protection of everyone’s rights. If you look at how our government worked for us from the founding to the early 1900s you will still find corruption, but overall you had good representation. The problems started appearing when a European group of international bankers decided to merge with American industry. Families such as Rothschild, Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Brown Brothers Harriman, Warburg, Kuhn Loeb, J. Henry Schroder and Jacob Schiff are all at the center here. They wanted more for them and less for you. I can’t possibly go into that much history here, but look it up and find a really scary thing that happened. After 1910, which is primarily when things started to fall apart, is exactly when these bankers and business tycoons started implementing their plans. The best way to create a monopoly is with government. The best way to scam an entire population out of its money is through government, again, in the form of tax free foundations. So we see

Government gets bigger; they start making the people believe the government is your friend and can fix things. The banks get rich off loans to government, and then our children start to believe “this is just the way things are.” In reality, its not the way things need to be. Government does not need to control every aspect of our lives. In fact, throughout history it is proven that when there is less government, there is more prosperity. Give people the chance, within the law, and they will create a great society. It is my firm belief that proper non-government education and a solid understanding of history will clearly solve most all the problems we face today. We simply don’t teach real history anymore. We teach children how to be good citizens, don’t rock the boat and work best how the state sees fit. It would not be in the best interest of the government or the big corporations running everything to have a well-educated public, full of free think-

Editor: My name is Bruce McKay and I am running for a board position on the controversial Discovery Bay Property Owner’s Association. For those residents in their jurisdiction, I am asking for your vote and support. As most residents and readers of this paper know, the DBPOA has caused havoc to our members with their frivolous lawsuits, selective enforcement and mismanagement of membership funds. The leadership has been the same bunch of folks for the past 20 years. They have created a major liability to the community with their poor legal decisions, which ultimately will have to be paid by the members. They fail to accept responsible for their actions and plan on staying the course. Their plans call for raising dues every year even though members overwhelmingly voted against dues increases twice. I anticipate they will ignore the will of the members and bypass the required 2/3-membership approval for dues increases as stated in the Bylaws. They also want to spend money to hire a management company. The Association is broke. A major court award to a homeowner, due to their poor
leadership, is coming soon, which could reach $65,000. The Association has only $20,000 in the bank! They have allowed the blight of foreclosed properties that reduce our property values, doing nothing while community volunteers formed clean-up crews and started cleaning up these properties. When questioned about their dismal record of poor decisions and lack of any accomplishments, they choose arrogance and use disparaging labels to berate members and refuse to address members’ concerns. I made my decision to run in an attempt to stop further harm to the community and bring this rogue organization under control. I will use a commonsense approach and make decisions based on what is right for the betterment of the community as a whole. I will not support frivolous litigation, selective enforcement, or raise dues or assess members. I will support mediation rather than litigation to address problems. A priority will be to clean up the controversial governing documents. I will reach out to members for assistance and solicit volunteers rather than pay for services. I will see Letters page 19A

July 25, 1934-Aug. 29, 2010 Brentwood resident Larry Charles Tabke passed away suddenly on Aug. 29. His warm smile, friendly disposition and giving nature were his trademarks. Larry didn’t know how to say no to a friend in need. Larry was born in San Francisco and grew up in the East Bay, graduating from St. Elizabeth’s High School in Oakland. After serving four years in the U.S. Air Force, he spent several years with the Shell Development Corp. In 1958, Larry joined the General Electric Nuclear Power Division at the first-ever privately owned nuclear power test reactor at the

Vallecitos site. Larry spent 37 years with GE, rising to the position of site service manager. His responsibilities took him to locations around the world. In 1977, without a college education, Larry earned the title and certificate of Professional Engineer in Nuclear Engineering from the State of California. In retirement, he served on the Apple Hill Estates Board of Directors, worked in the Concannon Winery Tasting Room and was an assistant coach with Linemen Inc Camps. His twin brother, Jerry, preceded Larry in death. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marlene; his devoted children, Gary Tabke (Karin) and Karen Fernandez (Al) of Brentwood; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother Harry Tabke (Rita) of San Diego; sisters-in-law Carol Donato (Larry), Carlotta Barlow (Jim) and Chris Tabke. A mass was said on Friday, Sept. 3 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Brentwood, followed by internment at Holy Cross and a reception at the Apple Hill Estates Clubhouse. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in Larry’s name.
Jimmie Dean Maltbie Sept. 28, 1942-Aug. 22, 2010 Jimmie D. Maltbie passed away in his sleep at the dream home he built in Byron. Jim was 67 years old. His health had been
declining over the last few years. Jim is survived by his wife, Karen Cox; two sons, Darren and James; daughters-in-law, Jeanine and Wendy; grandchildren, Skylar, Tanner and Ryder; and stepmother, Marilyn Knapp. Jim was born in Martinez, the firstborn of Helen Lucille Trezise and James Raymond Maltbie. Jim graduated from Alhambra High School in 1962 and within a year opened his first Jim’s Auto Body in Port Chicago. He went on to build successful body shops in Concord, Walnut Creek and two in Antioch. Jim was an innovator and entrepreneur with hands of steel and a heart of gold. He mentored many employees who went out and started their own successful businesses. Jim never sat still. He ventured into numerous successful businesses, including Antioch Auto, JK Ranch, JDM Construction, JCM Trucking, Buck’s Lake Lodge, JAB Racing, Delta Sports Boats, Byron Rock and Ready Mix and Byron Feed. He loved the thrill of a new venture, but always came back to his true love, the car. He spent the last years of his life building and restoring old cars. Everyone who ever met Jim never forgot that first meeting and what he said during it. The family will hold a Celebration of Jim’s Life on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. followed at noon by lunch at JK Ranch. Please bring your classic car, Harley and most of all your memories of Jim. A written memory would be appreciated for our memory book.

Dysfunctional government calls for drastic measures Editor: I am ashamed of our state elected officials, from both sides of the aisle. Once again the citizens’ essential programs (child care, education, fire and police protection, infrastructure) fail due to the lack of a state budget while our elected officials ignore the need to run the state and see to it those citizens they are elected to serve do so! Every year we suffer the same dysfunctional government issues, with no budget. This needs to change and change now! I am not a big proponent of the referendum system, but we do need it now. I propose the following: 1: On June 1 of each year, no new bills may be introduced until the budget is passed
and approved. 2: On June 15 (if no budget in place) there is to be no contact with any person or company that is lobbying for new legislation. That no legislation may be discussed on the floor any legislative body, or in committee except for the budget. 3: On July 1 of each year, if no budget is passed, every elected member of the state legislature and their staff ceases to be paid. There shall be no retroactive pay after the budget has passed. This will include a forfeiture of all benefits until such time as the budget is approved and signed into law. At that time, all legislative staff must reapply for their positions. (They are not really jobs, but positions.) 4: The legislature shall be in session 16 hours a day, seven days a week until the budget is approved and signed into law. 5: If on July 15 no budget has been passed, the previous year’s budget shall be instituted and all elected officials shall be deemed out of office effective election day on the first Tuesday of November. They may not run for re-election. While we sit and do nothing and our elected officials refuse to meet the requirements of the jobs to which they have been elected, our children are deprived of the learning opportunities and our cities are robbed of income. The legislature, meanwhile, continues to meet with lobbyists, pass bills and set themselves up for fat jobs when their term limit forces them out of office. Can we get such a referendum on the ballot? Will our courts uphold the constitutionality of such a measure? Bob Munion Brentwood

Shortly After a Short Sale… …what happens? When can I purchase a home again? How long will it affect my credit? Is it worse than a foreclosure? Can the bank come after me for the difference between the sales price and my current loan? These questions according to Professor Wachter, a real estate and finance professor at the Wharton School of Business, are “the kind of conversation that’s going on at cocktail parties, at swimming pools.” Okay, maybe not swimming pools in the middle of our record setting cool summer season, but come on, you know where I’m going with this. Yahoo “short selling my home” and over 509,000,000 results appear, 1.7x the 186,000,000 results you receive when searching “NFL preseason.” It’s a fact short sales are on the minds of the people, and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has taken notice. Earlier this year the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) re-wrote – and actually created based on current market circumstances – their borrower eligibility guidelines for short-sellers looking to once again own a home. These changes went into effect immediately, and for any past homeowner that has gone through a short-sale, these changes are huge! If you stayed current on every bill you had – including your mortgage for the last twelve months – while going

through the short-sale process you can purchase another home the day after your short sale closes. According to FHA’s Mortgagee Letter 09-52, as long as you did not pursue a short-sale agreement simply to “take advantage of declining market conditions, and purchase at a reduced price a similar or superior property within a reasonable commuting distance,” then you are eligible for an FHA insured loan. However, if you were late on your mortgage, late on any revolving debt, or in the process of foreclosure while going through your short sale then all bets are off. Potential buyers in cases such as this have to wait a mandated thirty-six months (three years) before purchasing a home through FHA. So while many of the original questions in this column remain a mystery solved only on a “lender-tolender” case-by-case basis, we now have a nationally recognized policy for how shortly after a short-sale you can purchase a home. Local chocolatiers named Rookie of the Year Mountains of mouth-watering confections and the irresistible aroma of chocolate are enough to captivate visitors at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory store in Brentwood. But owners Christine and Craig McKnight want everything about their shop to be more than delicious, so they go out of their way to make sure customers have an unforgettable Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory experience. The McKnights opened their chocolate shop in October of 2008 at The Streets of Brentwood lifestyle center. Their hard work and dedication to the new business was recently recognized at the company’s bi-annual national convention in Scottsdale, Ariz., where they were named the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory 2008 Rookie of the Year. “Being named Rookie of the Year validated all of our hard work in the early months before actually opening the store, and then when we were brand-new business owners,” said Christine. “We have worked incredibly hard, we have put so much effort and attention to detail into this store, and we truly care about our business. We feel honored to be recognized by our colleagues and the company.” After her early-morning stint at the shop, Christine switches gears and assumes the role of teacher at O’Hara Park Middle School in Oakley. Her husband Craig is in charge of their store full-time. When they’re not working, both parents spend their time with their 8-month-old daughter, Remmi. In the years before opening their Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory store, Christine earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in education. Craig has a background in hotel and restaurant management and worked as a fine-dining chef at private country clubs for 12 years.

Craig’s hands-on culinary experience is put to use making dipped apples and fruit, fudge and other handmade favorites. With her background in marketing and banking, Christine is well-qualified for her work behind the scenes, scheduling finances, doing paperwork, managing the books and any other business need that comes up. One of Craig’s specialties is conducting in-store candymaking demonstrations. “Fudge-making is a crowd-pleaser,” he said. Visitors gather around to watch as Craig pours melted fudge onto a marble-topped table. As the fudge solidifies, he shapes it into loaves and appreciative viewers always get a sample. The gourmet caramel apples are another popular treat. Customers can watch as fresh Granny Smith apples are spun in caramel and then rolled in tasty toppings. The store makes more than 20 varieties, which are a favorite for fundraisers in the community. “Our fundraising programs are incredibly successful and rewarding. We make the apples fresh for each event and wrap them beautifully so they can be enjoyed as a special indulgence or given away as a unique, tasty gift,” said Craig. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory also offers treats and goodie trays for special events such as weddings, baby and bridal showers, corporate events and meetings, birthday parties, anniversaries and other celebrations. Both McKnights have called Brentwood home for most of their lives. “The community has received us very well,” said Christine. “We have fun and enjoy every day, and extend that to our customers. Several copies of sacred texts will be available for people to browse. “Some may get to see the Quran or the Book of Mormon for the first time,” Ruehlig said. All through the night, an 85-person Sufi choir will recite the names of God every 15 minutes in several languages. A portable labyrinth will also be available to visitors for a meditative walk. On Sunday, the Seventh Day Adventist choir will perform at 1:15 and 1:45 p.m. and a 12-foot tall, six-sided red cedar Peace Pole will be planted into the St. Ignatius’s grounds. On each side of the pole, the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” will be inscribed in English, Filipino, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Vietnamese, French, Korean and Ibo. During the Peace Pole ceremony, a Native American group will perform a dance and chant ritual, inviting others to join in, as 12 white doves will be released. Refreshments will be provided by the Filipino and Sikh communities. Though Interfaith Founder and Executive Director Bonacci had been collecting books on diversity for years, it wasn’t until Sept. 8, 2001 that he established his Inter-

DiFate filed a crosscomplaint for attorney fees and costs, and eventually won. The court agreed that the DBPOA complaint against DiFate was a non-suit based on the fact that the sidewalk and curb cut areas in front of DiFate’s house were countyowned and therefore not applicable under the CC&Rs.

I decided we had to stop the hate and embrace everyone’s differences.” Ruehlig said he’s always been interested in diversity, joining the Peace Corps and serving in Turkey, chairing the Contra Costa County Human Relations Commission and living in the Philippines for four years. His wife, Cynthia, is Filipina. “The beauty of this day is that we are all opening ourselves to be non-judgmental, Ruehlig wrote in an e-mail. “Though it is the public side of a larger phenomenon, a grassroots call for brotherhood, the International Day of Peace can be celebrated anywhere and by anyone. It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon or just sitting in quiet meditation. When one man marches, there is a ripple. Ward Messersmith, current DBPOA president and a member of the Design and Environmental Review Commission (DERC), said he is not qualified to speak to the legal aspects of the court documents, but did express some frustration over the case. “My observation is that over the past five years, Roger (DiFate) has repeatedly rejected decisions made regarding his driveway issue,” said Messersmith. “Our (DBPOA) responsibilities are to act as caretakers (of the association).” The court ruling comes at a time when the DBPOA is in flux. Disputes over the recent resignations of board members and the proper, or improper, reappointment of others has carved a deep divide within the already fractured association. And with a little more than $24,000 in DBPOA coffers, the question of how the association will pay for DiFate’s judgment is
The Oakley Almond Festival is gearing up for its 21st birthday this weekend, and in honor of mascot Ben Toasted’s adult status, festival organizers have redrawn the map. Entries for the classic car show were so great that the location has been moved to the O’Hara Park Middle School green – where the festival’s booths and vendors typically set up – and the booths and vendors have been relocated to the back of O’Hara Park, where the carnival and live music stage is located. “We’ve basically just moved everything around,” said festival chairman Steve Nosanchuk. “Everything is closer to everything else and it’s all on the grass, so it’s more userfriendly and accessible.” Sponsored by the Oakley Chamber of Commerce, the annual event features plenty of live music, food and vendor booths plus the popular parade on Saturday morning. “Although a five-day loss was originally proposed by the district, that is just too much to cut from our students and families,” Holmes said. “The loss of three school days chips away at our ability to provide a comprehensive education prior to the state-mandated STAR tests, so our students may be a little less prepared for those in the spring.” As the state budget remains in limbo, Volta said the future of the district furloughs is unknown. But the district hopes this is a one-time occurrence and that the schedule will return to normal for the 2011-12 school year. Dal Porto Ranch makes Grand showing The girls from the Dal Porto Ranch Show Team saddled up their horses and rode their hearts out at the recent 2010 Summer GoldN-Grand held in Rancho Murieta. Six riders from Dal Porto participated in the event, three of them for the very first time. New to the Gold-N-Grand were Alexis Steele, Hailey Powers and Megan Silvera. They were accompanied by veterans Lori Butler, Margaret Neely and Whitney Peek. And all earned at least one belt buckle. Alexis and Spank My Wranglers were awarded a first in the 10-under Showmanship class and a fifth in 10-under Equitation. Hailey and Lark N Happy took second in 10-under Showmanship and fourth in 10-under Equitation. Megan and Zipped N Invested captured a first and a second in the 18-under Trail class-

We were able to keep them from at times not even having somebody to pass the ball to. That’s been part of our game plan right from the beginning: to play a really good solid press and execute it well, and they executed it perfectly today. “So I was able to bring some of my bench players in and give them some experience. Everybody played today. That’s always nice when you’re a coach to get everybody in the game. I think we had contributions from just everybody in the pool, and that’s even better as a coach.

Freedom is regrouping this year after having made it to the NCS playoffs last season, led by league MVP Keaton Lynn, who has graduated. “Our guys played hard; they definitely swam hard,” said Freedom Co-coach John Sierra. “Liberty’s a tough rival. And we definitely have to work on our strategy. We’ll expect to meet them in our home game in a few weeks, and we definitely have to focus on individuals and strengths and getting better set up. This is really a young team for us. We only have two seniors. They will have to really bond as a team. We have a goodsized team compared to years past.”

Roessler is looking for big things for the Lions this season. “This year our biggest league rival, I think, will be the Heritage team,” he said. “They are a solid team. I actually coached many of the boys there in the summer club program and the winter program. So I know the talent they have. And we’re going to have to really prepare for them.” The Lions hosted Heritage Wednesday, Sept. 8, the results of which were not available at press time. Team chemistry could be the winning formula for the Lions this season. “They are as close a team as I’ve ever coached here,” said Roessler. “And the camaraderie – it’s not just the varsity team, it’s the JV team too. Altogether, everybody’s one team; we are Liberty High School water polo.” A key player is Sarmento in the two-meter set position. “The idea is to get the ball to him,” said the coach. “And he happens to be the biggest guy on our team and the fastest. We have a great support cast with Alex Soderburg and Logan Trudell, our only left hander,
so he sets that right side. Logan and J.T. were the two highest scorers last year for our team. We are going to try to get everybody else up this year scoring goals. We had good contribution from Jake Flint today on defense. Jase Roessler did an incredible job at two-meter set.” Another key to the Lions’ success this year will be the play of goalkeeper Leo Colbert, a senior in his fourth year on the squad, and a summer and winter club team player. “The kid is just absolutely phenomenal,” said the coach. “He played very well today. He’s very communicative with his teammates, talks a lot to his teammates, telling them where the ball is, what to do, who to guard, who’s open. So having a quarterback on the defense like that is a real asset. It’s going to be a great season. We are really looking forward to this.” After this weekend’s tournament in Newark, Liberty will host Clayton Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 14 and Antioch on Wednesday, Sept. 15. Dirt modifieds to clash at Antioch Speedway by Jack Menges Correspondent Troy Foulger returns to his home track Saturday night with the idea of winning the dirt modified season championship at the Antioch Speedway. The 21-year-old Martinez
driver enters the final point race for the dirt modifieds with a virtually insurmountable 472-424 lead over Jeff Thomas. Foulger failed to make the main event in the West Coast Nationals at the Antioch Speedway two weeks ago when 50 dirt modifieds checked in for the big race. With
determination to erase the bad memory at Antioch, Foulger not only made the main event but finished fourth. The Antioch Nationals main event turned into a torrid duel between a pair of racing legends who battled for the championship titles at the track in the 1990s.
Hogge IV finally got the best of Scott Busby in the closing laps after they had battled it out most of the race. Rounding out the Saturday night program will be the 360 winged sprints, super stocks, pure stocks, dwarf cars and mini trucks.

Falcons from page 1B start to the season, saying, “I thought we actually worked as a team very well – which is not a first, but they came together as a team that hasn’t been playing together very long. We had a couple kids who have never played in a game who got some playing time. And some of the girls really helped them out and kind of showed them what the game is all about. I think we did really well as a team all around.” The outcome could have been much different had Jennings not made several saves from point-blank range against Liberty attackers. Beyond Jennings, though, the difference in the game came from the supporting players. Other than Hull, Jessica Rodriguez was the only scorer for Liberty. Freedom, on the other hand, got goals from Linda McMahon, Emily Pels, Anna Carter and Pamela Yeshewas. While Bell was happy with the game, she did note areas where the Falcons can improve: “Especially toward the end, the girls started getting tired and we started making some sloppy passes and started making some uncharacteristic mistakes.

So I think we can work on that, building up our endurance and building up our stamina. Also working on our passes and just being sure that we continue working as a team and don’t have any selfish play.” While not pleased with the outcome, Rose wasn’t discouraged with his team’s effort. “We’re a young team; we graduated five seniors last year,” he said. “We’ve got two seniors and the rest are juniors and sophomores, so we’re a young team. I’m proud that in the third period we were down by five or six at one point, and a lot of teams could have just quit on it. But we came back and got it down to about two – 10-7 final, and we were actually down by two at one point. “As I told the girls, we can play with them; they’re not super great above us, and we can play with them. And we play them again in October. That gives us some time to correct some items and go at them again in October. It’s the first game; it’s a long season. Freedom’s going to be the toughest team, I think. Heritage and Deer Valley are also going to be good, but we’ll just see how it plays
out.” Rose also had no problem identifying what his team needs to do to produce better results: “What we need to work on is better shots. Their goalie is good, but we made her look really good on a couple of shots too. We just need to do a better job of guarding number 14, Taylor Henry. I think three of four of their goals were when we would take a shot, Taylor was at the top of the pool, she would head down and nobody would go down to pick her up. She scored literally three or four when there was nobody on her.” Rose also noted that despite the final score, there were times when the Lions kept the Falcon offense, including Henry, in check. “When we were able to play half-court offense and guard her, we shut them down, for the most part. So there are just a couple of things that we need to work on.” The Lions hosted Heritage on Wednesday, Sept. 8 while Freedom hosted Deer Valley. On the next play, the backup quarterback turned the ball over on the the Eagles’ 7-yard line, leading to a touchdown run by Liberty’s Bobby Davis, putting the game away. “Overall I thought it was just a great team effort last night,” said Smith. “The execution wasn’t where we wanted it to be, but the effort was terrific. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done over the next few weeks. But we’ve proved to be a tough, resilient team. When it mattered, we were able to finish a team that we hadn’t beaten in seven years.” Liberty is on the road at Livermore on Friday, Sept. 10, followed by the home opener Sept. 17 against American. For decades, we have treated prostate cancer with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. A promising new vaccine, though, could help our bodies fight the cancer head-on. Prostate cancer is a typically slowmoving disease that affects a gland in the male reproductive system – the prostate. In its early and most treatable stages, the disease generally has no noticeable symptoms, which is why screening has been used to try to detect it. Two tests – a physical exam and a blood test – are the most common tools used to identify prostate cancers, and depending on a specific cancer’s stage and rate of growth, several treatment options are available.
A promising vaccine Surprisingly, it is common for cells in our bodies to mutate into cancer cells, but our immune systems almost always recognize and destroy them before they can cause any harm. The cancers that develop into problem-causing tumors are the ones our immune systems can’t fight fast enough. A similar scenario is true for viral and bacterial infections. Potentially harmful viruses and bacteria are introduced into our bodies daily, but our immune systems detect and destroy them before they can spread. The ones that develop into illnesses are those that can outrun our immune systems. Vaccines help prevent viral and bacterial illnesses by teaching our immune systems to recognize the intruders before they ever have to fight them. And ongoing research is demonstrating we might be
able to treat prostate cancer by teaching our immune systems to identify and destroy the cancer cells. Someday, vaccines might even be able to prevent prostate cancer from occurring.
Prostate cancer’s threat In many cases, prostate cancer can take 10 or more years to become harmful. Sometimes, though, the disease can spread quickly. Unfortunately, current screenings cannot identify which cancers will spread quickly and which will move slowly. When the cancer spreads, the urinary tract, nearby lymph nodes and even the bones are commonly affected. Early symptoms of prostate cancer include trouble urinating, a slow urine stream and starting and stopping while urinating. Blood in the urine or semen is also possible. After the cancer spreads, its symptoms depend on which areas of the body are affected, but swelling in the legs, pelvic discomfort or pain, constant and unrelenting bone aches, fractures and compression of the spine are all possible.
Recommendations Men 50 and older with an average risk of prostate cancer should have a conversation with their primary physician about prostate cancer screening options. Cure that craving for corn by David Navarrette
Brentwood Spice and Olive Oil Brentwood is an especially great place to live in the summer months. Fresh fruits and vegetables are grown all around us, from cherries in June to squash in October. And an even greater perk is that we have one of the best farmers’ markets around. There are families that we know coming every other week from the Hayward area for our market. We honor one product annually with our CornFest, and are fortunate that such excellent corn grows so close to home. It’s a season that, for us, will run until early fall, one of the longest seasons for a vegetable. Corn is grown across the United States, but for most areas, the fresh variety won’t be available until September. Corn is a versatile vegetable. It’s used in sweet or savory preparations, alone or in a mix. It’s high in potassium, and you can find calcium on the list, too. You can steam it, boil it, bake it, roast it, and it is not too bad raw, either! I love it on the grill; we soak it for
a few hours, take the silk off and any leaves that aren’t tight to the cob, and roast it on the grill for about 10 minutes, rotating so all sides are treated equally. We take it off the grill and remove the husks.

Another trick is to melt butter in a tall can containing water. The butter floats to the top, the water keeps it from burning and as you dunk the corn into the can, it gets coated with butter as you pull it out. Some of our favorite ways to enjoy corn – so as not to get too sick of it – are focaccia garlic bread with corn kernels over and a slight bit of cheese; corn bread muffins with about a half cup of whole corn added; black bean salad with roasted corn; and of course, corn on the cob!

Black Bean Salad 2 15-ounce cans of black beans 1/3 cup chopped cilantro Kernels from two to four roasted cobs of corn ½ to ¾ of a 15-ounce can of pineapple, diced Half of a small red onion, diced 2 Roma tomatoes, diced 4 green onions, chopped 1 teaspoon cumin 1 pinch sea salt – fleur de sel is very nice here
1 teaspoon oregano 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 tablespoons vinegar (red wine or white balsamic are ones we use) 1 fresh jalapeño, finely diced Avocado is optional. Alternative spices: Brentwood Spice & Olive Oil’s Hometown or Smoke Means Fire blends (add one tablespoon of either to liven up the flavor)
All of the above ingredients can be adjusted to suit your taste. Open beans and pour off juice, rinse and pour into bowl. Add remaining ingredients, toss and serve. It’s great on a hot day, and with fresh corn available now, the sweetness is remarkable.
