arouses Train-truck crash under investigation Muir arboreal awe by Rick Lemyre Staff Writer
Railroad officials and the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office are investigating the collision between a passenger train and a big rig that injured 39 people near Orwood Resort in Byron last Friday night. There were 204 passengers aboard the Amtrak San Joaquin train headed east toward Stockton on its way to Bakersfield when the accident occurred at 7:27 p.m., according to East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Chief Hugh Henderson. The injured included two of the train’s crew. None of the injuries were serious, and two life-flight helicopters brought in departed without passengers. “There was a ‘bang’ and I knew we’d hit something,” said Kay Beyett, who commutes on

shook back and forth. At first I was afraid it was going to derail.”
Independent truck driver Fidel Pinon said he was at the wheel of a tandem-trailer hopper truck carrying feed corn over the private railroad crossing. A row of roadside trees obstructed his view of the tracks until it was too late to avoid the collision, he said. The intersection has no lights or cross arms, and is marked only with stop signs. The train ripped the second trailer off the truck, blasting kernels of corn more than 100 feet but leaving the rest of the truck upright and intact. Pinon was uninjured. “The best part of this whole thing is that no one was seriously hurt on the train, and I get to go home to my family,” he said. Lions get goal-oriented
by Rick Lemyre Staff Writer Getting a big jump on the currently empty field, Brentwood Vice Mayor Steve Barr has announced that he’ll run for mayor next November. “I’ve been asked by a lot of people if I was running,” Barr said Wednesday. Some of those asking were considering running for City Council, and part of their decision is based on whether he would be running for mayor. The early announcement allows more time for the candidate pool to sort itself out, he said. The official nomination period for the election doesn’t open until July 16, 2012. “It’s not official until we can pull papers, but I am definitely considering a run,” Barr said. Barr, who was elected to the City Council in 2010 and served on the Liberty Union High School District Board of Trustees before that, said his interest stems from a desire to help direct the city through important times. see Barr page 15A

Grand opening for new water plant by Samie Hartley Staff Writer The Ironhouse Sanitary District will unveil its new Water Recycling Facility to the public on Saturday, Oct. 15, but the treatment plant has already received statewide attention. Last month, the California Association of Sanitation Agencies bestowed the Technological Innovation and Achievement Award on the Ironhouse Sanitary District (ISD) for its new facility, which treats an average of 2.5 million gallons of water per day. The plant utilizes multiple ultrafiltration systems, known as membrane bioreactor technology, to remove solids from the water, and ultraviolet light process destroys pathogens such as bacteria and fungi. Waste products filtered through the system are loaded into a truck and hauled to a landfill. The treated water is stored onsite, used to irrigate fields or sent back into the San Joaquin River. “The water treated at the new facility isn’t at drinking quality, but the process is extensive and cleans up the water so that it is safe enough to return to the Delta,” said ISD General Manager Tom Williams. “This is the first membrane bioreactor facility in Contra Costa County. It’s a very environmentally friendly process.” The computer-operated facility is equipped with numerous safeguards. Should one phase of the eight-step process be com-

The new facility also features an onsite laboratory so that ISD staff can test water samples on a daily basis. The new facility was needed for many reasons. The older system had been in operation since 1983, and was showing its age. The district’s service population, consisting of Oakley and Bethel Island, was increasing. Most importantly, government environmen-
tal regulations were becoming stricter, and the need to employ more advanced, green processes was unavoidable. Construction began in April of 2009. Williams and his staff originally projected the facility would cost $66 million, but due to the economic downturn and reduced construction costs, the plant was built for $54.5 million by Western Water Constructor, Inc. The facility will be paid for in part by ratepayers, as well as partly through a zero-in-
terest loan from the State Water Resources Board Control Board. The district also designed the facility in-house, which Williams said saved millions as well. District Engineer Jennifer Skrel designed the facility to allow for future expansion in order to meet new state regulations and an increase in the service population. ISD serves about 36,000 residents, but the facility has a buildout capacity to accommodate 81,000, processing up to 6.8 million gallons of water per day. At its current design, the facility can process an average of 4.3 million gallons, which Williams said was enough for the next 15 years. Williams and his staff are excited to share this new facility with its customers, so they’re hosting a grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 10:30 a.m. “We want to invite the public out so that they can see how their money is being spent,” Williams said. Festivities will include speeches from local officials and a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by live entertainment and a free lunch. There will be games for the kids, a pumpkin painting station, and hay rides to the new treatment plant so that customers can get an up-close look at the new technology. The festivities will wrap up around 2 p.m. The Ironhouse Sanitary District is located at 450 Walnut Meadows Drive in Oakley. For more information about the grand opening ceremony or the new treatment facility, call the ISD offices at 925-625-2279. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

A quilt show attendee examines the variety of patterns displayed at last year’s Delta Quilters annual show.

Quilt show on tap by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer Local quilters are warming up for the Delta Quilters annual show, held this weekend at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds in Antioch. The show runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tikkets will be sold at the door for $7; a two-day pass costs $10. Children under 8 and seniors over 80 get in for free. Last year, more than 400 people braved rainy skies to make it to the show, which drew attendees from as far away as Salem, Ore. The event raises money for the Delta Quilters’ charitable programs such as Quilts of Honor, which assembles comforting blan-
kets for veterans. A total of 28 vendors will operate booths at the show. One of the event’s major goals this year, according to quilt show co-chair Kathy Brito, is to show the story behind each quilt. Accompanying each quilt will be information about the hard work and inspiration sewn together square by square. “We try to come up with different stories for our quilts to make it more unique,” Brito said, “and to kind of understand where we are when we make them.” Organizers have added more categories to the show, so more quilters can become part of the fun, including a kids bracket for artists ages 3 through 12, and a historical category featuring quilts displaying vintage items. Attendees can also vie for raffle prizes.
Services will be held this weekend for Brentwood resident William H. “Bill” Ebbinghaus, who passed away Oct. 3. B i l l touched the lives of many, lived life with verve and will be missed by many. A memorial EBBINGHAUS service in celebration of his life will be held Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. in Cap’s Oak Street Bar & Grill, 144 Oak St. in Brentwood. The Ebbinghaus family welcomes friends to join in the celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Brentwood Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 325, Brentwood CA 94513.
Correction A notice about activities at the Los Vaqueros reservoir in the Sept. 30 Press contained dated information. The marina building and docks will close for construction starting Monday, Oct. 10, although shore fishing will continue. Visit www.ccwater.com for more information.

MORE PRINCIPAL REDUCTION NEWS If your loan is owned by Freddie Mac, I have some good news for you. First, let me explain what Freddie Mac is briefly. They may own your loan, even though you make your payments to someone else. The company you make your monthly check out to is your “servicer.” The company that actually gets your money is the “investor.” Sometimes they are the same, but most of the time they are different entities. To find out if your loan is owned by Freddie Mac, go to this website: www.freddiemac.com/mymortgage. Starting on January 1, 2012, all homeowners with a Freddie Mac loan that apply for a loan modification must be considered for their new program, called the “Standard Modification.” The old program was called the “Debt Coverage Ratio” and was ONLY concerned about getting your debt ratio in line. The new program will look at dropping your payment AND your mortgage principal by 10% to make your loan more affordable. To qualify, you must
either be at least 60 days behind on your mortgage, or you can prove that you are in imminent danger of default. You can prove this through documenting your hardship and proof of income to show that you can’t afford the payment. Another way they will make the payment more affordable is stretch the term out to 40 years from the date of the modification. Even though they HAVE to consider you for this program starting on January 1, your lender MAY consider for this program as of October 1. So if you are having trouble making your payments, or soon will, and your loan is owned by Freddie Mac, call your servicer up and see if they will consider you for the new “Standard Modification” and let me know if you are successful! As of October 1, 2011 conforming loan limits will be dropping by 14.27% (almost the identical percent-age of Italy’s weather change from September to Oc-tober). Putting the more important percentage of the two into actual numbers – the loan limits – lets us know that conforming loan limits are dropping from $729,750 to $625,500. This change is after three years of higher loan limits, brought on by the Federal government, in hopes of helping the housing commu-nity. The thought was to increase the loan limits, keep the rates low, and allow more families to reenter (or enter for the first time) the housing market. Accord-ing to the same minds that initially made these changes in 2008, we’re “closer” to where we need to be and the higher loan limits are no longer needed. So, just as the weather is nothing that we’re able to change, neither are the loan limits. Eventually, the weather will fall back into place; we’ll see leaves changing color, a crisper air in the AM, and longer sleeves on the kids that we’re dropping off at school. Eventually, our housing market will fall back into “normality.” In the meantime, the Federal govern-ment will continue trying to do their part by bringing loan limits back down to their original limits. If you have any real estate lending related questions or concerns don’t hesitate to write me at tfreymortgages@yahoo.com or call me directly on my cell phone, (925) 726-1444. – Advertisement

With the first day of fall – September 23, 2011 – al-ready behind us, it’s very difficult to see any signs of Oc-tober or November anytime soon. And I don’t mean the Halloween aisles at your local CVS Pharmacy; I mean the changing in the leaves, the changing in the weather, and the changing in people’s mindset. For the most part, in Brentwood and the surrounding areas, we’ve finally just found summer. Kids are still wearing t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops to school…and parents can’t wait to drop them off in their t-shirts, shorts, and flips-flops because the weather is almost too perfect to miss that AM work-out! However, through all of the “interesting” weather we’ve thus far experienced in 2011, the facts are the facts: We’re still officially dealing with fall. Fall, histori-cally, means colder weather and colder guidelines. In Italy for example the average temperature between the months of September and October drops 14.67%. In Ve-gas, this statistic – don’t forget I do numbers (loans) for a living – drops to 13.68%. Last but not least is New York City; between September and October the average tem-perature in “the city that never sleeps” falls a mere 7.70%. Then again, that would explain why “the city never sleeps” – compared to our other two cities New York has the slightest decrease in monthly temperature. But, I did mention weather and guidelines in the be-ginning of the last paragraph so let’s get back to the guidelines.

The Class of 2013, starring as members of the Justice League, locked the College Park Falcon behind bars during the Homecoming Parade. Freedom defeated College Park 35-0 in the big game following the parade. Iron Man, Captain America and Thor made an appearance on the seniors’ Homecoming float. Celebrating Antioch by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer Tired of hearing about Antioch’s bad reputation, Chamber of Commerce Chairman Sean Wright decided to do something to change it. Wright announced at a recent Antioch City Council meeting that the chamber has planned an event focusing on the positives of living in the city. On Monday, Oct. 24 from noon to 2 p.m. at Humphrey’s on the Delta, the Chamber of Commerce will host its inaugural Celebration of Antioch. “There are some really good things taking place in Antioch, and I wanted to give our city officials a chance to express those,” Wright said. “I don’t want (them) to focus on the budget and the things we know are still happening. Let’s give ourselves the opportunity to talk about and think about the positives.” The chamber has invited several prominent local figures to address the positive aspects of being an Antioch citizen. Antioch Unified School District Superintendent Don Gill will describe the exciting things happening on the city’s education front, such as linked learning academies. “This gives citizens the opportunity to hear things that will make them proud to live here and want to be a part of it,” Wright said. Other guest speakers will include Mayor Jim Davis and City Manager Jim Jakel,
whom Wright said will get a chance to step away from the City Council chamber dais and speak with residents about happier topics than budget and blight. Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando has been called upon to speak about the crime rate, which has been decreasing since he took over. At a recent City Council meeting, Cantando announced that from January through June of this year, violent crime has taken a 19.1 percent hit compared to that time frame in 2010. “I believe any opportunity we have to showcase the positives occurring in Antioch benefits our community,” Cantando wrote in an e-mail. “I am extremely proud of our police department, our city staff, the AUSD, and the citizens of this community. I believe providing this information is extremely effective so the public understands the positive things that are occurring in their community.” The $20 price of admission to Celebration of Antioch includes lunch. Tickets may be purchased by calling 925-757-1800. Wright said the Chamber is trying to arrange for ticket sales on its website. The Celebration of Antioch event is part of an effort by a reborn Chamber of Commerce. “The chamber is giving more to our members and providing more for our members, and trying to be more of a part of the city of Antioch, working more with our city leaders,” said Wright. “The direction is really exciting.”

It’s a Matter of Law By Barbara Frantz
WHO AM I? I have advised business owners for 34 years on how to start and operate their businesses successfully. I have hardly ever been asked: What is an EIN, Do I need it, and how do I use it? I believe that business owners think that they should know, but I bet that this topic is like “white noise” within the monumental list of tasks to open your doors for business. So here goes. An EIN, or Employment Identification Number, is a number issued by the IRS that is the equivalent of a social security number for an individual. It is used to file taxes, to identify your company to various government agencies, and to separate your business from you as an individual. If you are a sole proprietor, you can use your social security number to identify your business, but then your SSN might end up in the public domain. Also, if there ever is an audit, unless you are really organized, you will have to go back and separate your personal investments, personal liabilities, and personal gain, from that of your business. And your business has some deductions that you cannot take in your personal life, so the separation has an added benefit. Some organizations, specifically banks, will not let you set up a corporate or limited liability company (LLC) bank account without your EIN, and you can’t get your EIN until you have a corporate or LLC number from the Secretary of State for the state that you are filing in.
You can call the IRS for an EIN, you can fax them or you can file online with an “interview” process where you answer their step by step process. If you file online, make sure you have access to a printer, because there are three sheets you will have to print. You must also file an EIN for the estate of a person who passes away, even if that person has a living trust. Our firm can handle the “maze” for you, making sure that you answer the questions correctly, so you don’t end up with a result that you didn’t expect. The last thing that you want to be concerned about is getting an EIN when you are tackling the many steps to open a business or when you are suffering the loss of a loved one

The challenges will come from the continuing recession, he said, and keeping the city on its current, sound financial path. Brentwood’s sound financial management – demonstrated by a balanced budget, 30-percent reserves and fully-funded police department – earned praise from a county grand jury earlier this year.
“The reason we’re in good shape is because of adjustments made when Donna Landeros was city manager,” he said. Paul Eldredge took the city manager’s reins from Landeros, who retired last week. Barr also said the city practice of using a computer program that allows staff to change variables and look 10 years down range has also been important. “We have some decisions to make now that we have to put in place now or the city could have some issues 10 or 15 years down the road,” he said. In support of her husband Editor: The last couple of weeks have been a challenging time for us. It’s not easy to have one’s personal family difficulties turned into a public spectacle. For those of you who have respected our privacy and for the unbelievable number of calls and e-mails of support, we are infinitely grateful. While we would have much preferred to work through our issues privately, that has been impossible from the first, and some missteps have been made in attempting to be honest and get Brian’s side of the story to residents. I’m fully aware that Brian’s role as an elected official makes it harder to realistically hope for some restraint among those who see this as an opportunity to score political points. It would have been a refreshing surprise if Brian’s political opponents had viewed this as a delicate and private family issue, but because it has become weekly newspaper fodder I feel like it is important that my voice be heard. While I have no desire to engage in a point/counterpoint rebuttal with those on the other side, the public does need to know a bit more about my husband and why I’ve chosen to stand both beside him and fully in support of his choices during this difficult time. Brian is among the most giving, passionate and intelligent people I know. He has a big heart, and cares deeply for his community. He’s been a great husband and father, taking on more of the home responsibility as I pursue my career. He’s a man of strong values and character. He is also a human being and as such he has flaws, but he continually strives to make the right choices and do the best he can by those affected by them. There has never been a question for us as to whether our family would work through this rough patch, and we are stronger for the experience. His choice to fulfill his commitment to the CSD and

Not all problems traceable to Walmart Editor: Why does this store agitate so many people? Mr. Sumner, I am sure Walmart has lots of lawyers, as most companies. Yes, money buys lots of votes but not all people can be bought. Do you really believe that Walmart lawyers are telling local officials what to say? Yes, Walmart would bring muchneeded jobs to the area and yes, it does pay minimum wage. What business do you know of that pays new hires top salaries? Everyone has to start out at the bottom unless you own the company. Isn’t minimum wage better than no job and collecting unemployment or welfare? Walmart isn’t the only company that has employees who work less than 38 hours and get no benefits. There are lots of businesses that don’t provide benefits to any employees. I don’t understand how everyone thinks that the businesses downtown would close because of Walmart. The businesses downtown carry items that Walmart doesn’t carry. Not everyone in Brentwood can afford to shop in the stores downtown and need a less expensive option. What problems would Walmart create? If you look on the following page of this paper, Cop Logs, you’ll find that Brentwood already has its share of problems. I don’t see that any of those problems were caused by Walmart. If you don’t like the city officials, by all means, vote them out, but it will take more than just your vote to do it. Once again, you mention the palm trees downtown. We get it that you don’t like the trees. The trees seem way overpriced but they are beautiful. They just look out of place and don’t fit with everything else in the area. I have a feeling that they are here to stay so maybe you should find an alternate route to travel so you won’t be upset every time you drive by them. Terri Adams Brentwood

trees into our small town and spend $169,000 on 113 trees, which included the palm trees. Each palm tree was over 5 tons. I have been selling homes here for over a decade and the small-town feel has always been a big draw. You get the feeling of being in town out of state, only it’s located right here in California. A wonderful family community and farm town. I have seen this town grow from a population of 7,000 to where it is today. Recently I was at a broker’s conference in LA and took a drive into Beverly Hills and admired the palm trees. Beverly Hills is known for its million-dollar homes and movie stars. Downtown Brentwood was headed in the direction of becoming similar to downtown Danville or Pleasanton, drawing people to go downtown and shop. The concept was great and I have been looking forward to it for years. No doubt our downtown needed some life brought into it, but at what expense? Did we really need palm trees that cost $16,000 apiece and more so, did they need to crowd in eight of them in front of the new City Hall? They do look beautiful on Second Street, but it doesn’t fit with the rest of the community or with the economy. Although it is being said Brentwood is doing well financially, was it necessary to spend that kind of money when other families in this town are struggling to make ends meet? There are families that are teaching their children to become more modest with their spending and find ways to stretch their dollars. Many have had to lose their homes or sell them and make a new start. Many others have lost their jobs and are struggling to find a new job. It seems to me that the change in the economy was a wakeup call to be a lesson to teach us not to be so frivolous with our money and to be humble, appreciating the good things in life. Having a job, being able to put food on the table, the ability to buy a home. Gratitude. Decision-making is important and how you are perceived go hand in hand. Wouldn’t our town have done just as good to have a nice new building that met the needs of the city departments, left the parking alone, as most consumers would prefer to park close to where they have to go rather than have to park far and walk in the hot sun or rain? Removal of 50 parking spots to replace it with parallel parking and wider sidewalks only created parking issues. I have heard of several accidents in parking that have since occurred and even opening car doors has become a hazard as there is no room get out of your car safely. I personally have been subject to
this, as my door was almost taken off on Oak Street. It didn’t occur to me there wasn’t enough room to get out. There is talk that there is not enough money to renovate Brentwood Boulevard now, and as taxpayers we may see our taxes going up to pay for it. Seems this is one area where we will pay as taxpayers for the extravagant downtown. Overall, there is nothing wrong with simplicity, using our tax dollars wisely and being a little humble. This is not 2005, when money was rolling in. It’s time to be conservative and grateful for what we have. Kelly West Brentwood
Flawed financial formula Editor: The formula and criteria for determining eligibility for financial aid is flawed because students are not able to get the funds they need for college. Financial aid is not looking at the reality of the students’ households. They only base it on the annual household income, and when they take that number into account, they assume the household makes enough money to pay for college. Student aid needs to look at the household costs each month, not solely how much they make per year. Of course, the number a household makes each year is going to be very large because it is over a long period of time. If they looked at each month, they would realize there is often not enough money for college. For example, there are other costs, like mortgage/rent, electricity, water, garbage, food and other items that a family might need that they are required to spend their income on. By not taking those expenses into account when determining financial need, lenders and grantors deny a large number of students from being able to afford to attend college. “Income alone does not determine financial aid eligibility,” says Diego Arce from DeVry University. However, it is from my personal experience that I have been found ineligible for financial aid because of my household income. My parents cannot afford college tuition; they can barely afford the basic necessities of the household. Isn’t financial aid made for families like mine to help kids from poor families attend college? If this was the case, a lot more families in need would be eligible for college funds, and it would not only be based on their yearly income. More kids could get an education and have a chance to get a good job later on in the future. Victoria Houchins Oakley

Heritage High junior Noah Peña isn’t a vocal guy, yet he’s a leader of both the cross country and track teams. While he’s running, Peña leads his teammates by example. He’s one of the top athletes on the cross country team in the fall and track team in the spring. When he’s not running, Peña expresses himself through music as an alto saxophone player in the Patriots’ jazz and symphonic bands. “Music itself is just a way to express myself,” Peña said. “A lot of the time, I’m not so good at talking. So music is just a way to become more emotional and let myself go sometimes.” One of Peña’s desires is to play in the 561st Air Force Band, for which anyone over the age of 17 is eligible. Both of Peña’s parents played in that band, and while he doubts there will be enough time
for him to play in it this year, it’s a longterm goal. This is head coach Kevin Bain’s first season as Heritage’s cross country coach. Prior to this year, Bain had coached the track team while Jennifer DeRego coached the cross country team. Now, DeRego is an assistant coach at West Point, and Bain coaches both teams. Bain said his first experience with Peña came two years ago, when Peña was just a freshman. Bain was watching him run for the cross country team and was impressed with his form. He went up to Peña and asked if he was going to run track as well. When Peña gave Bain a positive answer, the coach was pleased. “He loves the sport,” Bain said. “Not a lot of kids like to run long distance. Freedom blanks College Park for Homecoming win by Michael Dixon Correspondent
The 35-0 final score didn’t reflect the competitive intensity of Freedom’s homecoming game Friday night against College Park. Freedom led for the entire contest, but didn’t pull away until early in the fourth quarter. Freedom was up 21-0 when College Park senior quarterback Jordan Lewis appeared to score on a six-yard keeper. But the score was nullified due to an illegal shift. Three plays later, Lewis fumbled the snap and Freedom (4-0) pounced on the ball. Two plays after that, junior quarterback Dante Mayes hit his classmate, receiver Darrell Daniels, over the middle. Daniels broke several tackles and sped in for the 94-yard score, the third longest play in school history. “I thought I was going to get tackled, to be honest,” Daniels said. “I got good blocks from Cameron Brinkman and Stephen Rodriguez downfield. Excellent blocks. I just made a big play.” If that play didn’t put the game away, the ensuing kickoff did. College Park (14) lost the ball on the return – one of five turnovers on the evening. Freedom junior defensive back Adrian Perez scooped it up and ran 21 yards, scoring the game’s final

points. College Park did have opportunities to score. In addition to the aforementioned
fumbles, they committed two other fumbles in Freedom territory. Freedom senior defensive back Jordan Sheppard also intercepted
a long pass at the 1-yard line. Adding insult to injury, College Park missed a 31-yard field goal that easily had the distance but was blown off line by a strong wind. Freedom’s first score was set up by a blocked punt by junior linebacker Andrew Werkheiser. Two plays after that, sophomore running back Joe Mixon scored his first of two touchdowns on the night. Mayes found Daniels for a six-yard touchdown strike just before halftime. “We’ve just got to fix a few little things; we’re getting better every week,” Freedom head coach Kevin Hartwig said. “I challenged our defense this week, and they put it in. They got us a shutout. That’s huge going into the league season.” Freedom opens BVAL play on Oct. 14 at home against perennial BVAL power Pittsburg. Junior varsity Freedom’s junior varsity squad has been no less successful than its varsity team, finishing the preseason 5-0 preseason with a 28-14 win over College Park. Running back Eddie Martinez made touchdown runs of 65 and 45 yards to pace his team. Running back Aaron Mullins chipped in with a 10-yard scoring run. Linebacker Michael McKeen scored for the defense on a 90-yard return off a fumble recovery. For the full story, visit www.thepress.net.

Panthers blast Red Devils in blowout by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer
Antioch senior receiver Jeremy Bittle attempts an impressive grab over a Mt. Diablo defender.
Antioch High head football coach John Lucido remembers all too well when the Panthers were on the business end of blowouts. Of the nine games Antioch lost last year, the smallest deficit was 10 points. Now the Panthers are enjoying life on the other end of the scoreboard, as they thoroughly dominated visiting Mt. Diablo Friday night en route to a 48-2 victory. Senior quarterback Troy Amate finished 12-for-19 for 108 yards and three touchdowns, two of which landed in the hands of junior receiver Darrian Jones. “It feels a lot better than being 1-9,” Amate said. “We have a lot more confidence this year and a lot more skill.” The Panthers (4-0) started off with a bang, as senior running back Deante Mays took the opening kickoff down to the 13-yard line. Three plays later, Antioch was in the end zone on a touchdown pass from Amate to Jones. It was actually the Panthers’ defense that helped the Red Devils (1-4) score their only points of the night late in the first quarter. After Mt. Diablo fumbled inside the 10-yard line, senior linebacker Anthony Borrelli scooped up the loose ball but was tackled inside the end zone for a safety, making it 6-2. The game was all Antioch after that. Touchdowns by Jones, senior running back Eddie Robinson, junior linebacker Hunter Karnthong and
senior wideout Stephen Klein gave the Panthers a 32-2 lead at halftime. Karnthong took over at quarterback in the fourth quarter and finished Antioch’s scoring on a 20-yard touchdown run. The Panthers’ dominance didn’t prevent them from committing nine penalties in the sloppily played game. The Red Devils were flagged 13 times. While Lucido admitted that some things need to be tightened up in preparation for Friday’s game against Northgate, he was happy with the result. “We knew this team was going to be pretty good; we knew what they were capable of,” Lucido said. “They knew they could do it and they stayed focused.” Junior varsity Antioch’s JV team was also successful, prevailing 35-20 thanks to the solid play of quarterback Isaac Lewis and teammates Jeremiah Sturgis, Kenneth Wilson and DJ Wall. Lewis sealed the victory in the fourth quarter, eluding several tacklers on an impressive 44-yard touchdown run. The victory gave the Panthers a 2-2 record. classes, that makes you self motivated.” While only a junior, Peña’s goals after high school are fairly clear. One option is to follow in the footsteps of 2011 Heritage graduate Eric Morford, who now attends Cal Poly. The other is to follow DeRego to West Point. For Peña, one of West Point’s most attractive features is that it’s not necessary to declare a major for two years. Both Cal Poly and West Point offer outstanding engineering programs, and Peña is considering a major around biomechanics. But beyond the academics and the fact that he’s familiar with one of the coaches, Peña likes the structure that the Army provides. “I really like the life that goes with it,” Peña said about West Point. “The rules and everything are things that I think I can handle. It’s a D-1 school; the runners are all really great. That’s one of the things I’m looking for in a college: the overall running program.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net.
wo Los Medanos College softball players from Antioch were recently awarded full-ride scholarships to William Jessup University in Rocklin. Outfielder and Antioch High graduate Diandra Hayes, left, is a two-time Bay Valley Conference first-team athlete. Halide Porras, an outfielder and Deer Valley graduate, was voted her team’s most inspirational player by her teammates at the end of the 2011 season. Both are excited about getting settled in at their new school.

A mere 50 miles west of East County stands a forest whose ascent inspires awe and wonder. It is home to the tallest living things on Earth: the California coast redwoods. They tower up to 370 feet above the forest floor; their diameter can span 22 feet and their bark can measure a foot thick. Most of them are between 500 and 800 years old; some have lived for 2,000 years. Impressive numbers – but no competition with the direct experience of this place. Muir Woods National Monument must be seen, its air must be breathed, its stillness must be heard. Redwood rescue At the turn of the 20th century, a place called Redwood Canyon was slated to be condemned, cut down for timber and replaced by a dam and reservoir. In 1905, a wealthy congressman named William Kent and his wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent, got wind of the plan, bought the land and deeded it to the federal government. Under the terms of the Antiquities Act, President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 proclaimed it a national monument. Roosevelt’s choice for the park’s name was logical: Kent National Monument. But Kent had a different candidate in mind. One of his old friends, a philosopher, naturalist and author, had for many years been devoting his life to bringing to public awareness the concept of conservation as an ethical imperative. His name was John Muir. Roosevelt acceded to Kent’s choice, and named the monument Muir Woods.

Life galore A walk through Muir Woods is an exercise in more than neck-craning. In the presence of the mighty redwoods we feel small, but not alienated. The ancient rainforest is alive with marvels on the small scale, from mushrooms to mosses. A multitude of birds inhabit these trees, from Stellar’s jays to migrating warblers and kinglets. Arrive at 8 a.m. when the park opens or linger at sunset when it closes and you can catch a glimpse of blacktailed deer. Redwood Creek flows through the heart of Muir Woods, providing a habitat for coho salmon and steelhead trout, a feast for our eyes and music to our ears. Four bridges cross Redwood Creek, allowing us to stop and savor the profusion of life along its banks and in its current – a current amplified by the wet spring of 2011. Lace ’em up For the hardcore hiker, Muir Woods is a hub from which many adventures radiate. It’s easy to leave the tourists behind and hop onto trails leading up to Mt. Tamalpais or down to Stinson Beach. Take the Hillside Trail north to where it intersects with the Ben Johnson and Bootjack trails. If you’re in an ocean mood, head west on the Ben Johnson Trail and hook up with the Dipsea Trail, which ushers you down to Stinson Beach. The Matt Davis Trail provides a scenic loop back to Muir Woods. Got a taste for see Muir Woods page 3B

rarified air? Take the Bootjack Trail up to the Mountain Theatre and head northeast on the Rock Spring Trail to West Point. From there, the Old Railroad Grade fire road will hoist you to the panoramic vista of Mt. Tam’s East Peak – 2,571 feet above sea level, the highest point in the North Bay. Vigilance required The ancientry of Muir Woods is no guarantor of its immortality. Although coast redwoods are hardy organisms and can fend off fire and wind, insect and earthquake, their chief nemesis is the sinister species known as Homo sapiens. A few hundred years ago, California was home to more than 2 million acres of oldgrowth redwoods. Now, 150,000 acres remain, only half of which enjoy federal or state protection. In the early days of Muir Woods National Monument, throngs of motorists, picnickers, campers and plant collectors took a severe toll on the ecosystem – aided and abetted by an indulgent park staff. Today, park volunteers in concert with the National Park Service continue to restore
this hallowed grove to its former glory. Paved and planked walkways bordered by low wooden fences, plus well-maintained trails in the upper elevations, have cushioned the blow dealt by the park’s 1 million annual visitors. Old-growth havens such as Muir Woods provide more than visual splendor. They’re a natural soundscape, a welcome shelter from the noise of urban life. What’s at first mistaken for the absolute stillness of the woods is soon identified as the subtle music of wind in the trees, flowing water, the chatter of birds and rustling of mammals – a realm free of the constraints of time, the numbing daily grind, the trivialities of mass entertainment. A realm of renewal. According to John Muir, the woods named after him is “the best tree lover’s monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world.” It would be hard to dispute the claim. Muir Woods is a place that combines majesty in perfect harmony with tranquility. And most fortunate of all, it’s within striking distance of our neighborhood. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.
