The Town of Discovery Bay loves Christmas, as evidenced by its three annual holiday parades. The second of those parades — the Lighted Boat Parade — took place Saturday, Dec. 14, despite scattered showers. Grace Milne and her husband, Mike, are longtime parade participants. Milne said this year was as fun as ever. “I thought it was one of the best parades we’ve had out here,” Milne said. “Everybody’s boats were just amazing. They were decorated so great, very detailed, just beautiful.” Milne was piloting the boat decorated as a biplane, one of the more popular boats this year, and winner of first prize in the large boat category. To fit in with the Winter Wonderland theme, Milne said she and her crew included snowflakes, the penguins from the movie “Madagascar,” and free rides to winter wonderland.

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has formally invited four storefront cannabis retailers and seven commercial cannabis cultivators — including some in East County — to submit land-use permit applications in anticipation of possibly being allowed to operate in unincorporated county areas. The move comes on the heels of state voters approving the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act in November 2016, which gives local agencies the option of allowing and controlling commercial marijuana

Feature: Daniel Nelson
Agency: East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Daniel Nelson knows a thing or two about public service. A man with a long track record of volunteer community service and eight years in the United States Marine Corps, Nelson is committed to helping his fellow man. That’s why he embarked on a new career challenge: firefighting. As a probationary firefighter with the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD), Nelson is learning how he can have a strong impact on his community. “I wanted something where I could have a direct influence in the community and continue my service,” Nelson said of his choice to pursue a career in firefighting. “Ever since I was young, I’ve always volunteered with community stuff, then went into the military
and carried that mindset over.” Nelson has worked in a variety of positions during his lifetime, including construction and a short stint as a professional wrestler. In June, he came to work for ECCFPD, citing its geographical diversity as a draw. Here, he will be able to learn city firefighting skills, along with residential and rural practices. “We also have plenty of motor vehicle accidents, and we have the waterways,” Nelson said. “It seemed like a place I could really grow as an individual and as a firefighter, which is really important to me in my career … with this district here, it’s so diverse, you get experience with everything.” Nelson is six months into his twoyear probationary period. As he works toward his goal of becoming a permanent employee, he will be commuting back and forth from his mother’s house in Alameda. Nelson moved back home

last year, when his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She died in September, and Nelson is taking some time to be with his siblings before making his next domestic move. Nelson hopes to have a positive impact on the local community through his job and continued volunteer work. East County residents are likely to see Nelson fishing in Bethel Island or riding his motorcycle on a country road.
The sixth annual Discovery Bay Triathlon will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2020, and all the action starts and stops at the Boardwalk Grill parking lot. With an estimated 300 participants this year, there will something for novice and advanced athletes alike. For those who have participated in triathlons before and those not sure about completing in a race by themselves — attendees can always get two friends and participate in the relay, with either the sprint or Olympic race. Each participant can do one of the three legs and each can swim, bike or run, as long as everyone has a great time. It’s also a great family event, and everyone has a feeling of accomplishment at the finish line. The early bird registration specials will end this month, so sign up as soon as possible and take advantage of the discounted rates before they increase in January. Remembering Jack Ferrill, a Liberty legend by Kyle Szymanski

Jack Ferrill may have been a lifelong Stockton resident, but no one doubts Liberty High School was forever etched on his heart. The longtime Lions teacher, coach, athletic director, physical education chairperson, assistant principal and principal died on Dec. 10. He was 93. The legend blazed a trail in the athletic history books and captivated the hearts of many during his nearly 70-year career at Liberty and Independence high schools. “I don’t think many people can be Jack Ferrill,” said Liberty physical education teacher Linda Ghilarducci (Gooch), Ferrill’s former student and colleague. “You can try to copy it, but it just doesn’t come out the same.” The iconic figure cemented his legacy during a 39-year stint at Liberty that ended when he retired in 1990. “Two boring weeks later,” he jumped at the opportunity to help Independence establish a physical education program, to which he remained devoted until recently (a span of close to 30 years), when his children forced him to relinquish his driver’s license, much to his dismay. “He wasn’t happy, but I tried to take him everywhere he wanted to go,” said Kelly Johnson, Ferrill’s daughter. Ferrill’s friends and colleagues overflowed with heartfelt sentiments this week, describing him as a respected, loving, positive, smart, successful, dedicated, admired, insightful and passionate member of the school community.

“Whatever he did — as principal, coach, teacher — he gave 100%, which is why he is such a role model for a lot of people,” said Liberty Union High School District board member Roy Ghiggeri, who worked with Ferrill. The ageless wonder quipped that he was “just another member of the staff” and “nothing special.” In reality, he was much more. Coach, as he liked to be called, guided Liberty basketball, track, swimming and football teams during an illustrious 23-year coaching career — 14 years as head football coach. He climbed the ladder of elite company to become the longest-tenured coach in that position, and had the highest winning percentage in the school’s history. Just a handful of other notable achievements include: guiding the 1952 and 1953 swim teams, and the 1952 track team to league championships. But his real mark was left on the gridiron.
After 11 years as an assistant football coach, he took the helm in 1962, guiding the team to 7-3 and 7-2 records his first two seasons, before the squad went undefeated in 1965, a unit known today as arguably the best football team in school history. Four years later, perfection happened again with the 1969 team. “One of his strengths was he got the most out of his players,” said retired Liberty physical education teacher Rod Beaver, who played football for Ferrill in the early 1970s. “He was a master motivator and knew exactly what buttons to push and knobs to turn to get the most out of his players.” Off the field, he was just as special, Gooch said. “The high regard and respect we had for him as students was out of this world,” she said. “Then I took off and came back after 10 years, got the job at Liberty, and Jack was the PE teacher and athletic director. I thought
I had gone to heaven and back, because I am working with Jack Ferrill ... THE Jack Ferrill.” The noble one carried his historic feats right into the Liberty Union High School District Athletic Hall of Fame, which he spearheaded, in 1990. To nobody’s surprise, he was anointed, albeit begrudgingly, into the inaugural 1992 class. “I said I didn’t want to be in the first class,” Ferrill once said. “I wanted Lou Bronzan, Ted Ohmstede, the people that gave their lives to Liberty. They threw me in anyway.” While the Hall of Fame — which features an annual new member induction ceremony — often freezes unique athletic legacies in time, the wondrous Ferrill never stopped adding to his own, even expanding beyond sports. Into his 90s, he would drive from his home in Stockton to Independence High, to teach or to attend Hall of Fame meetings. And without fail, he’d return, even if he had to hitch a ride, on Friday nights during football season to his field-level position to soak in the team and the game he loved. Now that he’s gone, his physical presence will be missed in Brentwood, but his legendary impact will resonate forever. “He had all the qualities that you’d want to have,” Ghiggeri said. “I feel bad for the people who didn’t have the opportunity to know him. There are very few people you can say these things about. You could talk about the qualities he had, the type of person he was, forever.” Public services are pending.

After eight years in the U.S. Army, two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan, William Martinek is ready to try his hand at a different kind of service. Martinek, 34, is running as a first-time candidate for Congress. The Brentwood resident, who now works as a financial advisor, says he has long been interested in running for office. “I always thought it would be much more in the future,” he said. “But I’ve been part of a couple different organizations, like the (Republican) Central Committee in Contra Costa County ... and the more I got into it, the more some of the people in the organizations I’m part of are like, ‘You would make a really good congressman. So why don’t you give it a try?’” Endorsed by the Contra Costa Republican Party, Martinek is a candidate in California’s District 9 — a seat held by Democrat Rep. Jerry McNerney. Republican Tony Amador will also run for the third time, after unsuccessful runs in 2014 and 2016. Martinek hopes to use his appeal to younger voters — he says ages 18-24 and 25-34 are the largest voting demographics in District 9 — and to rely on social media to bolster his name recognition. “They are a group of people that I can relate with on a really close level,” he said. “That’s an area I can speak to, where candidates who are 69, 75 or so have a little bit

more trouble relating to that demographic.” Jennifer Mixon, District 3 chairwoman of the Contra Costa County Republican Central Committee, agreed, stating the committee is proud to have him in the race. “William brings a breath of fresh air,” Mixon said. “He is young, he is vibrant and he shares our party’s values of limited government and low taxes. He’s someone who will listen to people.” Martinek is making the economy his top issue for the 2020 election, believing it’s the key that unlocks the answer to several other issues. “There were a lot of regulations put into place 15, 20 years ago that were designed to keep Brentwood a rural farming community,” he said. “Despite those efforts, we’re not a rural farming community anymore. Now, something like 78% of our population commutes out of Brentwood every day. So, changing those regulations so we can make it easier and cheaper for busi-
nesses to grow in Brentwood, I hope, will help us start bringing in more of those businesses in.” But he recognizes the geographic diversity within District 9 and wants to maintain that, too. “Some of them are farm towns, and they want to stay farm towns,” he added. “Farming is a huge deal in our district, and we want those farm towns that are actually farm towns to stay farm towns, as well. So those smaller cities that we have in the eastern portion of the district, we don’t want those to change.” Bringing in more businesses can reduce commutes, he says, thus minimizing the time working people are spending away from their families and improving their quality of life. Overall, he hopes to bring a fresh voice to Washington and be an advocate for his constituents. “I have no problem with conceding

certain points to make sure that we come to an agreement that’s going to be better for everyone,” Martinek said. “If the way I feel about an issue isn’t how this district feels about an issue, I need to listen to them and make sure that we’re doing what they want and what they feel is best.” California’s primary election is set for Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Bloodshot eyes and a voice that sounded like he’d been chewing gravel hinted at the stress Brentwood on Ice owner Tom Gregory has been under since damage done by vandals shut down his business, but after three days of roundthe-clock activity, skaters were once again gliding across the ice. The popular downtown skating rink reopened Tuesday, Dec. 17, and the skating season that at one minute seemed very much in question, was back on track. “We opened up at noon today,” Gregory said Tuesday afternoon. “I’m ecstatic about the fact that we actually got opened back up today. I really was optimistic for Wednesday. We opened on Tuesday with the support and help of some of the local businesses, friends and family. I’m very, very happy that we opened up earlier than I expected.” The start of the holiday season held a lot of promise for Gregory. With the move

opened and several hundred gallons of glycol coolant drained from the system. According to Gregory, his rink looked more like a lake Saturday morning — a day that was expected to be the busiest of his very short season. “It was really heartbreaking for me, what I saw happen on Saturday,” said skating instructor Laura Carreon. “This place is very special to me. It hit really hard, feeling that it could be gone. It was very sad.” Gregory and his crew spent much of Saturday attempting to assess the situation. They determined a chiller unit needed to be replaced if any of the season was going to be salvaged. “The old chiller that was damaged last night was removed around 10:30 p.m.,” said Gregory on Sunday afternoon. “A new one was brought in at 3 a.m., and installed and hooked up by 6 a.m.” Getting the new unit in place and operational was touch-and-go for a while as the crew of technicians addressed one problem after another. But by Sunday af-
ternoon, Gregory was confident he would reopen on Wednesday — an important goal, because 400 Girl Scouts were expected throughout the day Wednesday. With the business closed over the weekend, Gregory had to cancel nearly a dozen parties scheduled for Saturday alone. “All I can do is apologize,” he said. Gregory, who also owns Got A Party party rental business, said the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming, often leaving him at a loss for words. Friends and strangers have shown up and made cash donations to help him offset the extra expenses incurred and revenue lost as a result of the vandalism, for which he did not have insurance coverage. Several people started GoFundMe accounts to help, as well. Representatives of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10789 made a surprise visit Monday afternoon and presented Gregory with a check for $400. “Tom has helped us out for years, and we get to help him out now, whether he likes it or not,” said Steve Todd, commander of VFW Post 10789. Carreon was encouraged as she watched the business come back to life. “I’m in shock with what I saw unfold over the last few days,” she said. “But there’s also a big part of me that knows if anybody can do it, Tom can do it.” The Brentwood police are investigating the incident, and surveillance videos are under review. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth; and wives, Judy and Anita. He attended Liberty Union High School and was in the Navy during WWII. He then was a butcher in his family’s Bi-Rite Market. After that, he sold cars until his retirement. He was active in the Brentwood community in the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce and part of the original Carnique. Jess was cremated and his ashes will be scattered in a future, private service.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINE PRINT I wrote an article recently discussing some options for down payment assistance in the form of silent second loans or grants and told you to really check out the fine print to see if the money needs to be paid back and if your interest rate will be higher because of any “free” down payment assistance. There is another area of concern in regards to buying properties that are in a city or county affordable housing program. These are properties that are sold for less than what neighboring properties are sold for. You would need to qualify for the program similar to the grant programs I mentioned in my prior article. Meaning you can’t make too much money, but you also need to make enough to make the payment. Sometimes you have to be a current resident of the city or county and also can’t have owned a home over the past few years. They also often require that you use a certain lender partnered with the city or county. You are able to buy a home for less that

what you would outside of the program, so that part is great. The challenge is that usually the home needs to stay in the affordable housing program and only sold to people who qualify. Sometimes this provision sunsets after so many years, but it’s often decades or other times they are permanently in the program. This means that while you technically “own” the home and are responsible for all maintenance, property taxes, etc., the city or county program will dictate who you can sell the home to in the future and for how much. So it’s better than renting, but you don’t get to enjoy the full market appreciation as you would if you bought the home outside of this program. Getting facts on climate change
Editor: The Dec. 13 issue of The Press had a letter questioning the validity of climate change, and valid, intelligent questions were asked. I suggest readers visit climate.nasa.gov for answers. NASA scientists have made an excellent presentation of the evidence. If you don’t want to read it because you’ve already made up your mind, you’re part of the problem, not the solution. If you read it and still don’t believe it, please offer your logical argument. I would hope a strong opinion is supported by some research, not just quoting Glenn Beck’s “An Inconvenient Book.” Get online and get answers from scientists, not pundits and those wishing to please big industry. Editor: I am writing to express my deep concern that our city continues to approve residential builds when they know full well we have some serious issues. Our schools are overcrowded, and it’s impacting the student-learning environment. Additionally, space is so limited there is not enough space for them all to eat in the cafeteria at Heritage High School, which can be mitigated in warm months, but not in the cold months. Adding more homes will add more children (in addition to the Antioch homes within the district that will increase the census). We all know we have a big financial shortfall when it comes to emergency services. I would hope we could see more active solution finding from the city, instead of private citizens having to force the issue via a ballot measure. Adding more homes, while it does provide incremental funds per home, also

So, if you hate someone for what they are (black, brown, Asian, Latin, et al), then you, by definition, can’t be Christian. So, if you are a racist, sexist, xenophobe, homophobic or misogynist, then you must not be a Christian. So, if you treat other people in a manner that you would not like to be treated, then you can’t be Christian. If you think it is ok to vote for a candidate who has over 14 women alleging sexual misconduct, some when they were minors, then you can’t be Christian, either. Driver recognized for finding missing Brentwood man by Deanna Gordon Staff Writer
A bus operator from Tri Delta Transit has been formally recognized and called a hero for her vigilance in helping to bring a missing Brentwood man back home to his family. Becky Vanderpool — a Pittsburg resident who has worked for Tri Delta Transit since 2006 — has always represented the agency well, according to her supervisors, but her quick thinking went above and beyond in October. Dirk Burton, a 20-year-old autistic man from Brentwood, went missing after he was last seen at the Safeway store on Brentwood’s Second Street on Oct. 28. A few days later, Vanderpool was on her route in Bay Point when she saw him. “I was waiting to pull from 380 eastbound, and he was pacing back and forth,” she said. “I recognized him from one of the posts that he was missing.” She approached Burton, asked him if he lived in Brentwood and if he’d been missing, and he said yes. After telling him his family was worried and people were
looking for him, she asked him to get on the bus. He said he didn’t have any money, but she told him not to worry about it. “I called my dispatcher and let them know to call Brentwood PD,” Vanderpool said. “To let him know that I had him on the bus.” She brought him to Los Medanos College, where Brentwood police were waiting, and he was brought back home to his family. Vanderpool says she was just doing her job. “I don’t think I did anything special,” she said. “I didn’t do anything that any one of us drivers wouldn’t have done. It’s like we’re pretty much the eyes of the city out there.” At the Tri Delta Transit board meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 11, District 3 Supervisor and Tri Delta Transit board member Diane Burgis and representatives from the offices of Sen. Steve Glazer and Rep. Jerry McNerney recognized Vanderpool, calling her a hero. “Everywhere I go, I see our bus drivers all over the place, and they are doing all the right things,” Burgis said. “So

Liberty basketball team finishes fourth at Stonebarger Tournament by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
The new-look Liberty High School boys’ basketball team finished fourth at its Stonebarger Tournament last week in Brentwood. Liberty (3-4) defeated Skyline (Oakland) 63-57 to open the yearly affair, but dropped back-to-back games to San Francisco’s Lincoln High (64-55) and Chico’s Pleasant Valley 63-51. Eight of 13 Liberty players are new to the squad this season. “We are still trying to find our way,” said Liberty head coach Jon Heinz after the loss to Pleasant Valley. “There are a lot of new bodies this year. A lot of people we counted on last year have obviously graduated, some players we expected back this year are not playing with us.” Liberty trailed by only three at halftime against Pleasant Valley, and managed to tie the game on Jake Wells’ three to open the second half, but the Vikings went on an 18-6 run from that point forward to open a 47-35 lead with 1:12 left in the quarter. The Lions cut the deficit to five with 1:20 left, but drew no closer as both teams

consecutive shots to end the game. Pleasant Valley’s Aaron Gomez sank three of four free-throws over the team’s final two possessions to ice the victory.
“Our biggest thing is we just want to play hard,” Heinz said. Junior newcomer Wells paced the Lions with 14 points and fellow newcomer Austin Silva finished with 13. Pleasant Valley’s Gomez poured in 22 and guard Jake Kremer added 14 in the win. Lincoln won the tournament, edging College Park 77-75. Liberty will return to the court on Dec. 26 in the Damian Lillard Invitational in Oakland. Freedom boys’ basketball Freedom went 1-1 in its own Roy Ghiggeri Invitational to finish third. The Falcons opened with a 68-60 win over El Cerrito, but Clayton Valley took the title in a 63-50 win over the Falcons the following day. The Ugly Eagles outscored Freedom in every quarter, building up a 39-21 lead at halftime. Freedom was slated to return to the court on Dec. 17 against San Leandro, but results of that game were not available as of press time. Freedom senior takes part in prestigious race by Michael Dixon Correspondent
Clayton Williams, a senior at Freedom High School, has been racing for 10 years. Most of that time was spent behind the wheel of a kart. More recently, though, he’s moved into racing cars. On Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday, Dec. 8, Williams had the opportunity to participate in the USAF 25 Hours of Thunderhill — a team racing event at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows. He was one of five racers on Team TFB Teen Mazda, which finished fourth in its class (out of 11) and 25th overall (out of 40). Williams was one of only two teenage participants. “It felt pretty good to compete with older guys, and being able to run with these older guys with much more experience under the belt,” he said. “It felt good being able to keep up with them.” Williams noted that, as the event grew closer, reality started setting in that he was actually participating.
While behind the wheel of his car, Williams reached a top speed of 105 miles per hour. Other cars around him were in the 120-130 mph range. “It’s such a cool event that I’m sure a lot of people around here would like to be a spectator at, or even participate in,” Williams added. Williams races Spec Miata cars in National Auto Sport Association (NASA), and races primarily at Thunderhill and Sonoma Raceway. Williams got into racing at 7 years old when a friend of his had a kart. It took some convincing, but he eventually talked his father into getting a kart for him. “I begged my dad for one,” Williams said. “He thought I wanted an ATV, but it was a little go-kart.” From there, Williams was hooked. That started a love of racing for Williams, one he hopes will continue for years to come. “In the long run, I’d like to do openwheel racing,” he said. “But any sort of racing I’d be open to any opportunities.”

he Brentwood Blaze cheer team recently held its fourth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser at Brentwood Veterans Hall. The event raised $6,407.20 that was donated to the Kaleidoscope Cancer Connection in Byron. The cheer teams, consisting of 40 5- to 14-year-old girls, performed 50 cheers in 50 minutes and gathered sponsors. The event was sponsored by the Women’s American Legion Auxiliary and assisted by Dolly Rios, the secretary of that organization. The rising senior has hit .471 with 82 hits and 45 RBI in 57 games for the Patriots, according to Maxpreps.com. West Coast Earthquakes win state championship The West Coast Earthquakes Explosion — featuring Brentwood residents Carter West, Nathan Bone and Gianni Brewster — recently won the Gold Division 2 State Championship and placed ninth in the state. The squad knocked off the Heritage Wolves on penalty kicks from Jude Malson, Santiago Cerventas and Brody Thompson. West Coast coach Curt Cox had his team fired up from the start, with support from Rob Hansen, Rafael Zamora and Thomas Roett. In an action-packed game, the first goal against Heritage came from a cross by Earthquakes forward Daen Hansen to midfielder Brian Oliveira, who volleyed the shot into the back of the net. As Heritage picked up momentum, West Coast defenders
Brandon Gobea, West and Bone continued to hold off attacks, preserving the one-goal advantage in the first half. West Coast continued to apply pressure against the Wolves with passing and ball control from forwards Cameron Cordero, Zachary Dimas and Connor Shenave, and midfielder Julian McCall. Heritage began applying pressure, but goalkeeper Brewster made some incredible stops on multiple attempts. West Coast forwards Malson, Cerventas and Thompson, and midfielder Dinolen Shang began gaining control of the game, and with a quick pass from West, Cerventas sprinted up the line and scored the second goal, giving West Coast a 2-0 lead. The supervisors formally selected the invited businesses from a pool of applicants that a county interdepartmental panel first analyzed and scored based on a number of factors, including ownership qualifications, location, submitted business and operating plans, proposed security, sustainability, and community and economic benefit. Public reception of the supervisors’ move to allow cannabis-based businesses has been mixed, with some applauding the move and others afraid the businesses could generate increased crime, added traffic, unpleasant smells, nighttime light pollution and decreased nearby property values. About 15 public speakers repeated many of those concerns, while imploring the supervisors not to invite Element 7 to apply for a land-use permit at

But the invitation was extended anyway. “The potential revenue is not greater than the safety and physical well-being of our surrounding neighborhood and community,” said nearby resident Katrina Cookman. District 3 Supervisor Diane Burgis, who represents the unincorporated Brentwood area, voted to invite the company to formally submit a land-use application, but cautioned its ownership that nearby residents aren’t happy with the Chestnut Street location choice. Burgis previously said all seven recommended cultivation companies would operate indoors, feature strict security and odor control, and be generally inconspicuous to the public. “Looking at Element 7’s applications, they looked very impressive,” Burgis said. “This is an invitation to apply, and I will say it was communicated pretty clearly from the community that they are not interested in some of those areas. If Element 7 wants to apply, I want them to understand the community has spoken.” Gioia added that many of the residents’ concerns would be explored further after the company has turned in a formal land-use permit application. Christopher Bloom, an Element 7 representative, said the company is open to addressing the residents’ concerns.
“I assure the board and all the concerned citizens that we would love to sit down with the community,” Bloom said. “We would love to have that conversation to address a lot of the misconceptions, falsehoods and legitimate concerns they all have.” Leading up to the supervisors’ formal invitations, Element 7’s two Brentwood and Byron proposals were ranked third and fourth out of 19, with judges noting that the company’s staff has extensive cannabis experience and plans to implement strict security and provide about $30,000 in charitable community contributions annually, according to the official scoring sheet. Another East County business invited to apply include Lifted Spirit Collective, which aims to operate at 5930 Balfour Road in unincorporated Brentwood. It garnered the highest score of all 19 cultivation applicants, with judges noting the facility’s local ownership, operators’ farming background, planned use of existing greenhouses, and indoor cultivation as overt positives. Oscar Burrola, Lifted Spirit Collective’s chief operating officer, said the company would implement a community benefit plan if selected, involving donations to local shelters, community cannabis education and other charitable deeds based on local feedback.
“It’s very exciting,” Burrola said. “We have been pushing this for three years now, trying to get the county to overturn its ban after it was put in place. We still have a long way to go, but we can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.” The only other East County business to earn an invite was Diablo Valley Farms, ranked fifth, which intends to apply for a permit in unincorporated Brentwood. Owned by local resident Bob Nunn, the business earned high marks for its local ownership with a background in farming, and for its plan to use an existing facility for operations. It’s expected the operation will closely align with an already legally existing microplant processing center, involving hemp that turns seeds into seedlings which are then sold, Nunn said. “It won’t even be legally classified as cannabis,” Nunn said this week. “It’s not even close. We are selling it before it flowers, before THC. It’s basically just the small plant that somebody else can transplant and cultivate from there.” County staff are slated to report back to the full board of supervisors after the submission deadline to report who has applied.
