NAMI makes Special Santa delivery progress in East County

Choosing The Right Wine

by Heather Brewer Staff Writer

When people in East County are impacted by their own mental health issues – or those of a loved one – and reach out for help, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is making sure they have a place to find support. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. What started as a small group of families, gathered around a kitchen table in 1979, has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. Today, they are an association of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers, who work in their communities to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. “When people are having a hard time with family members who have mental illnesses, they can go to NAMI,” said Gigi Crowder, the county’s NAMI chapter faith net coorindator. “We strive to

Knightsen union, district reach impasse Teachers, administration call for state mediator by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

A year after starting contract negotiations, the Knightsen Teacher’s Association (KTA) and the Knightsen Elementary School District (KESD) have reached an impasse, and a state mediator will be sent to conclude the negotiations. Earlier this month, the KESD rescinded its offer of a 1 percent raise, retroactive to July 1, and the

“ Teachers here have lost confidence in this district, and (it has) failed to do the right thing and bargain in good faith to make our salaries more competitive.

Jamie Bennetts, president KTA KTA filed with the state for impasse. The district’s administration did not object. “Teachers here have lost confidence in this district, and (it has) failed to do the right thing and bargain in good faith to make our salaries more competitive,” said Jamie Bennetts, president of the KTA. “There is a lack of budget transparency here. We are appalled at the turn negotiations have taken and

that they have dragged on for this long.” Bennetts is accusing the board and administration of misconduct, inaccurate budget projections and violating the Brown Act by discussing public business behind closed doors. “The reason they are saying they don’t have any money to pay for the raise is there is a slight chance in the three-year projection they came up with that they won’t be able to

meet their obligations,” Bennetts said. “It’s a fallacy; they have accounted for zero enrollment in the next three years. I spoke with the board president, and I asked him to plan for some growth, which will create room (in the budget for the raise). So now, the mediator will come.” KESD Superintendent Theresa Estrada admits that budget mistakes were made, but feels Bennetts’ accusations are unfounded and unnecessary. “There were adjustments made to the budget for the first interim report due to new, unanticipated costs . . . as well as some known costs unintentionally missed during the budget-development see Knightsen page 22

CHP, PG&E urge safe driving this holiday season The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) urge drivers to use extra caution on the roads, avoid distracted driving and designate a sober driver this holiday season and throughout the year. “Distracted driving is 100 percent preventable. Unfortunately, an estimated 80 percent of traffic accidents involve some form of driver distraction. Everyone plays a part in keeping the roads safe,” said Pat Hogan, senior vice president of Electric Transmission and Distribution for PG&E. The CHP will observe the New Year holiday with a Maximum Enforcement Period from 6:01 p.m., on Dec. 30, to 11:59 p.m., on Jan. 2. All available personnel will be on duty and although the CHP will be focused on impaired drivers, officers will also watch for distracted driving, speeding and seat belts violations, as they also affect the motoring public. In addition to fatalities and injuries,

more than 1,700 vehicle-caused incidents this year have resulted in power outages across PG&E’s 70,000-square-mile service area, from Eureka to Bakersfield, impacting nearly 693,000 homes and businesses. If your vehicle comes into contact with a downed power line, stay inside! The safest place is in your car. The ground around your car may be energized. Honk the horn, roll down your window and yell for help, but warn others to stay away. Anyone who touches the equipment or ground around the vehicle may be injured. If there is a fire and you have to exit a vehicle that has come in contact with downed power lines follow these guidelines: remove loose items of clothing; keep your hands at your sides and jump clear of the vehicle, so you are not touching the car when your feet hit the ground; and, keeping both feet close together, shuffle away from the vehicle without picking up your feet. Turning City Park into winter wonderland by Linnea Jessup Correspondent

Even before the recent freezing temperatures, City Park was a winter wonderland. A trio of snowmen glistened there, attracting visitors to the holiday displays, which included a large, beautiful tree, decked out in a rainbow of lights and colors. Peppermint-stick light poles stood tall as classic holiday music filled the park. The snowmen, created by local artist Beverly Turner, a Girl Scout Brownie troop and the Futures Explored Inc. of Brentwood, only added to the frosty theme. Turner, a local artist and art teacher at Garin Elementary and Excelsior Middle schools, used her professional expertise to create a snowman she dubbed ‘Little Frosty,’ complete with a big grin, a strawberry nose and a blue neck scarf. She also created smaller figures, which are being sold in a Danville art gallery. “I hadn’t done a decoration of this scale before,” said Turner, as she spread out her materials in the park, donned her knee pads and set up a complex cone made of wire and cord, then draped it with plastic tablecloths. The Brownie snowgirl, with her colorful apron and tray of ‘brownies,’ which were each painted by the young Brownies, was a group project by Brentwood Brownie Troop 37796. Leaders Shannon Rose and Jessica Martinez helped the troop create the outdoor exhibition. “Each girl helped make the snowgirl,

East Bay Regional Park District, Attention: Clerk of the Board 2950 Peralta Oaks Court, Oakland, California 94605 Faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted.

Also rolling onto the park scene was a tumbleweed snowperson. Large and ethereal, it was made of three natural tumbleweeds topped with an oversized top hat and slender branches for arms. It was a group project created by Futures Explored Inc.,

a Brentwood-based, adult day program, which cleans all the parks in Brentwood. “We’re a nonprofit, and we work in the community cleaning the parks,” said Martha Hassler, who works with the group. “I went online, looking for an inexpensive way to build a snowman and got this idea for using tumbleweeds, which we collected all from our parks, along with the branches we used for arms. We made the hat from a planter we’d used during summer for a tomato plant, collected the pinecones for eyes and made the nose out of a carrot. The only thing I bought was spray paint.” Jun Gandia, recreation coordinator for the city’s parks and recreation department, mapped out park entertainment for families and other residents during the holidays, with a photomural for selfies, nightly crafts and music, all against the backdrop of the 25-foot tree. He also came up with the idea of having ‘snow’ gently settle onto the park and tree during the community events. “I was inspired by the local response to the Scarecrow in the Park creations earlier in the fall for City Park,” he said. “I wanted to continue to cultivate local involvement to draw residents to the park.” Photo opportunities, gingerbread and holiday ornament craft projects, visits from Santa and even Elsa from “Frozen” helped transform the park into a setting with family-friendly exhibits into a local winter wonderland and a place for kids to delight in the season. Family Matters

by Silky Sahnan, esq. Rituals to Help You Bond with Your Children

Even if they’re fundamentally wonderful, the relationships we have with our kids must be constantly fed and nurtured. If your children are splitting time between you and your ex, you want to spend quality time with them when they’re in your custody. Use the following five strategies to connect with your children more purposefully. 1. Eat one meal together each day. As much as family culture has changed, a daily meal around the table still seems to be the best place for most families to stay connected. If you only have your kids part-time, share a meal every day you have them with you. 2. Daily prayer or meditation. This ritual can take whatever form you’re comfortable with, but try taking five to 10 minutes a day to pray, reflect, meditate or express gratitude with your children. Not only does this act help pass your faith along, but moments like these can be particularly special with the kids. 3. Make bedtime ‘face time.’ No matter how busy you are, tuck your children into bed and give them a few moments

of your undivided attention. Make it count. Ask at least one fun or probing question, such as, “What was the best part of your day today?” “If you could be any animal, what would you be?” or “Did Sophie tell any more hilarious jokes at school?” They’ll enjoy the opportunity to delay ‘lights out,’ and they’ll love the face time with you. Just be sure to end it at some point and let them fall asleep. Establishing family rituals like the ones we’ve discussed takes discipline and practice, particularly at the beginning. Creating deep connections with your kids is less about surprising them with grand gestures and more about routinized positive experiences that define your relationship and your memories of one another. If you’re facing a family-law matter or divorce and you need insight or help through the process, please contact the Law Offices of Silky Sahnan today at 925-276-0789 to schedule your confidential consultation, or visit us at legalservicesca.com for more information. – Advertisement

Supervisors approve motocross park reopening by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The return of the Sand Hill Ranch Motocross Park in unincorporated Brentwood is moving full speed ahead after the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors approved the project with a series of conditions. The park, at 50 Camino Diablo Road, will be allowed to operate as long as it follows a series of stipulations, which include limiting noise levels to 75 decibels, restricting the number of riders to 45 riders on the main track and 25 on the other, notifying neighbors of racing and nighttime events

two months in advance and undergoing compliance reviews after one, three, five, eight and 12 years. Several nearby residents expressed concerns about the park at a board of supervisors meeting in November, forcing the board to return in December with these stipulations. They hope the requirements allow the park to operate while alleviating residents’ concerns. “I don’t think either side is happy, but I think we are reasonably close,” said District III Supervisor Mary Piepho at the December meeting. The park, which has operated off and

on since the early 70s, closed in 2012, and has since been used only for occasional motorcycle classes. The property was sold to local residents John and Lori Ramirez and James and Dorothy Schmidt, who want to reopen the park under the name Diablo MX Ranch. Despite the stipulations, several residents continue to express reservations about the park reopening. According to attorney David Trotter, who is representing the opponents of the park, one of the biggest concerns is that noise will exceed the allowable 75 decibels along the fence perimeter and property line. He says the project should be reviewed for compliance to the California Environmental Quality Act, because there is a reasonable possibility the noise will significantly affect surrounding residents. County officials argue that the project is categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act, because the project was initially approved on the same property in the 70s. “I am fighting for my clients’ quality of life,” Trotter said. “They have been patient; they have tried to work within this process.” Lori Ramirez believes opponents’ concerns will not come to fruition, as it is highly unlikely that the allowable 70 bikes will be at the facility at one time. In addition, the park will only operate Thursday through Monday and will close for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Large-scale events will only be permitted twice a month.

“ I am fighting for my clients’ quality of life. They have been patient; they have tried to work within this process.

David Trotter, attorney “They are acting like it will be running every weekend, for eight hours, with 65 bikes; that is not the reality of the track,” she said. Even with the restrictions in place, opponents argue the facility will still be a nuisance. “We have been disturbed enough, just by the practice and recreation riding that has been taking place,” said resident Linda Thuman, who lives near the site. “Those are just a few bikes on the track. Imagine the noise that 70 will make. It will be like living inside a jackhammer.” District II Supervisor Candace Andersen said county staff and the board tried to strike a balance between the conflicted parties. “Nobody leaves the building feeling like they got everything, but it sounds like we are getting closer,” she said. “I know Diablo wants to be a good neighbor, and the neighbors want some peace and enjoyment.” To view the complete list of stipulations, visit bit.ly/2i7f2W5. WILL RATE-SHOPPING HURT CREDIT SCORE?

by Tony Kukulich Correspondent

Feature: Tom LoCoco

Agency: East Contra Costa Fire Protection District - Engine 93 It would be difficult to find someone who has worked harder to become a firefighter than Tom LoCoco. The seed was planted in a moment of crisis when LoCoco was just 16 years old. His mother suffered a heart attack while swimming in Hawaii, and he had to get her to shore and find help. One of the firefighters who responded to the emergency took note of LoCoco’s cool demeanor under pressure and suggested he would make a good firefighter. From that point on, his path was set. LoCoco enrolled in the firefighter academy at Allen Hancock College, and upon graduation, he went to work for three different fire departments, each on a part-time basis. During the three years he maintained that schedule, he was searching for a full-time career position. “I tested up and down, from the top of the state to the bottom,” he said. All the testing led him to the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD), where he landed a full-time position in 2008. LoCoco began to think of East County as home, and all was proceeding according to

plan until 2012, when he was laid off along with 15 other firefighters. For four years, he worked for the Santa Maria Fire Department, until April 2016, when he was rehired by the ECCFPD. “It was devastating when I got laid off,” he said. “Even when I was gone, this was still my home. When I had the opportunity to come back, I jumped at it.” When he is off duty, LoCoco and his wife are busy rehabilitating a home they recently purchased in Granite Bay and preparing for the arrival of their second child. “I’m very proud to work with these guys here,” he said. “There’s a tremendous amount of experience and camaraderie. I enjoy the job, and I feel like I’m good at it. Everyday is an adventure. Every call is a new challenge to help someone on their worst day.”

There is a pervasive myth in the real estate world that you don’t want to apply with too many lenders, because it will hurt your credit score. I don’t believe this is true. It does have a kernel of truth in that having too many inquiries DOES bring down your score, but it depends what kind of inquiries and how far apart they are. No one knows the EXACT formula the credit scoring companies use. It’s a closely guarded secret, kind of like how Google ranks search results. However, their published guidance on this area is that if you have several credit checks around the same time from the same type of lender (auto or home), it’s not a big deal. The scoring model assumes that you are starting to look for a house and need to be preapproved, or that you are shopping for the best rate. So, if you have two or three inquiries from mortgage lenders all within the same 30-day time period, they may lump those together as just one inquiry. But, if they

see inquiries from auto lenders, credit card companies or boat finance companies several times every month, that will hurt your score. But, why do they care about inquiries? Shouldn’t they just care about your income and whether you can afford to pay your payments? They may think you are applying for loans and getting turned down, which is a red flag. They wonder if there is something these other lenders know what you are hiding from them. Or, they may think you may be trying to run up a bunch of loans and then file bankruptcy (it’s been tried before). They may also be worried that you are becoming a serial borrower and will get in over your head in debt. The difference in sparkling wines As midnight approaches on New Year’s Eve, revelers anxiously anticipate toasting the arrival of a new year with a glass of something bubbly. Once the cork is popped and the drinks are poured, the party can truly begin. Although revelers may assume any fizzy beverage they are served is champagne, by the true definition of the word, they actually may be drinking something else – one of many varieties of sparkling wine. True champagne Authentic champagne is named after Champagne, France, the region where the grapes used to make it are grown, fermented and bottled. According to European law, the only labels that are allowed to include the name Champagne must be bottled within 100 miles of this region, which is close to Paris. The taste of champagne is unique, thanks to the soil in which the grapes are grown. Its mineral-rich soil imparts that flavor into the beverage. Champagne is made from a unique base of grapes that include pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay

grapes. Experts also say that roughly 90 percent of all blended champagnes use a ratio of two parts red and one part chardonnay mixes. Another component that sets champagne apart is the process by which it is see Wines page 9

Entertainment RESTAURANTS, NIGHTCLUBS, THEATERS & EVENTS

Wines from page 8 made. It is strictly controlled by the Appellation d’Origine Controlée. This certification dictates how a producer may grow the grapes and how the grapes can be harvested and processed. Champagne is produced by méthode champenoise. This procedure involves double fermentation in bottles and creates an earthy, yeasty flavor. Sparkling wines Champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wines are champagne. Other notable types of sparkling wine include Italian prosecco and Spanish cava. Sparking wine is produced in regions of France, as well as in the U.S. and Canada. However, sparkling wine can be made just about anywhere grapes are grown. Sparkling wines are often double-fermented in steel containers instead of bottles. People are drawn to other sparkling wines besides champagne for various reasons. For some, cost is a heavy consideration, as authentic champagne can be considerably more expensive than sparkling wine. In addition, some people find less expensive champagnes are not as palate pleasing as sparkling wines. Few things are more universally associated with celebrations than a bottle of bubbly. Subtle differences set sparkling wines apart from champagne, but personal preference is oftentimes the deciding factor when choosing a beverage for a special occasion.

Creative ways to celebrate the new year Counting down the hours until the new year can be exciting, as the world anxiously anticipates the adventures in store for the months ahead. Celebrating the new year dates back thousands of years to the ancient Babylonians, who celebrated at the first full moon after the spring equinox. The new year is now commemorated in various ways across the globe. According to History.com, one million people gather in New York City’s Time Square to watch the famed crystal ball drop each year. Across the pond in London, celebrants watch thousands of individual fireworks launch over the Thames River. In Sydney, Australia, roughly a million people line the shore each year to watch a fireworks show over the famed harbor. To match the excitement of New Year’s festivities, each year party hosts and hostesses are on the lookout for innovative ways to entertain and ensure

everyone has a blast. The following are a few ways to do just that as you and your guests prepare to close the book on 2016 and usher in 2017. • Go bowling. New Year’s Eve probably isn’t a big league night, so it’s likely you can reserve a number of lanes. Book in advance to take advantage of affordable food and drink packages. Some alleys now offer more than just bowling, with live music or DJ entertainment as well. You do not have to be a professional bowler, either, as the goal of bowling with friends is to simply have some fun and make some lasting memories. • Try a ‘first time.’ There is a first time for everything, and why not try something you have been thinking about doing for some time on the first day of the new year? Maybe you’re ready to tap into your adventurous side and try skydiving. Or, you may be looking to travel abroad to experience something you

have longed to see, such as the Egyptian pyramids or the city lights in the romantic city of Paris. • Cheer for every time zone. Thanks to the various time zones across the globe, “Happy New Year” is shouted multiple times throughout the night on New Year’s Eve. TimeandDate.com notes that, depending on how you define the time zone and if you include the International Date Line, there are 24 or 25 standard time zones. That gives revelers 25 opportunities to usher in the new year. Choose a country in each time zone, and then employ that country’s cultural traditions to celebrate. • Design a scavenger hunt. A fun activity for both adults and children, scavenger hunts can send guests in search of clues and answers based on things that happened over the previous 12 months. Include photos and other mementos when preparing clues. – Courtesy Metro Creative

Do You Need a Trust Check-up? by Joan Grimes, Esq.

People often ask me if and when they should have a check-up for their Trusts. Below is a good checklist for determining whether you need one. The Estate Plan is Not Current. If your Estate Plan was prepared prior to 2012, chances are good that it does not take into account the current tax laws. Most existing Trusts that I see provide for AB/By-Pass Trust, which is no longer necessary for 99% of the people. It is very important that you amend a Trust with AB/By-Pass Trust provision prior to the incapacity of a spouse. If a spouse does not have capacity to amend the Trust, it is too late to remove AB/By-Pass trust provision. Need to Change Trustees or Allocations to Beneficiaries. If a designated Trustee has died or is no longer available to be your Trustee, you should consider amending the Trust to provide for a new Trustee. Also, you should review whether your current payouts to beneficiaries are still appropriate. Are there new grandchildren you wish to provide for in the Trust? Is a current beneficiary having emotional or drug problems that might make a supplemental or special needs Trust more appropriate for their distribution? No Government Benefit Planning Provisions. Most pre-2012 Trusts do not have any provision for Government Benefit planning. If there is any possibility that you or your spouse will need government assistance, such as skilled nursing, your Trust should include the power for your Trustee to deal

with governmental agencies and apply for benefits such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and to manage Medi-Cal planning. Failure to Fund Trust. The failure to put assets into the Trust is a common mistake. Real property must be put into the Trust through a deed that is recorded with the county recorder. Bank accounts must be in the name of the Trust or have a beneficiary designation on the account. No Incapacity Planning. Most older Trusts fail to have any Incapacity Planning provision. Specifically, your Trust should have provisions for how incapacity will be determined, how assets will be used during any period of incapacity and specific instructions on care. Do you want to stay at home as long as possible with in-home care? Do you want to be near any specific child or relative? If you don’t state your wishes, your living situation will be left up to the judgment of the Trustee or the court. study conducted in Indonesia in the late 1970s that horses, cows, water buffaloes, goats, ducks and bats could become infected with Zika. But, there is no evidence that the animals developed the disease or posed a risk for Zika virus transmission to humans. Pets are much more likely to succumb to other mosquito-spread illnesses than the Zika virus. However, pet owners can still take certain precautions to keep their companion animals safe. Mosquito control measures are the best sources of protection. Ensure there are no sources of standing water in and around a home, as standing water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Natural and chemical pesticides may help in the yard. Also, speak with a veterinarian about repellants labeled for animals if mosquitoes are particularly bad. You can limit the time pets spend outdoors during peak mosquito season. Zika outbreaks are extremely unlikely in cold, dry climates where mosquitoes are not prevalent. But, pet owners in such climates should still take measures to protect their pets from mosquitoes. Routine vet visits and vaccinations are essential to keeping pets safe. Parasites can cause any number of health ailments, and heartworm is a particularly dangerous condition that can be transmitted through a mosquito bite. More research and information is needed regarding the impact of Zika on livestock and companion animals. Pet owners should continue to prioritize protecting their animals from potentially harmful mosquitoes. – Courtesy Metro Creative

Earlier in the year, the Zika virus became a widespread concern for travelers, who were warned not to visit certain areas – notably tropical climates – deemed vulnerable to Zika outbreaks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected aedes aegypti mosquito. While many people can overcome a Zika infection, it’s particularly dangerous to pregnant women and their fetuses and women who hope to become pregnant. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects that affect the fetus’s brain. Since the Zika virus garnered international attention, certain areas in North America have been affected, including Florida and New York. Zika has understandably raised concern about the virus spreading farther. While the illness is usually mild, with symptoms such as fever, aches and pains lasting as little as one week, pet owners are unsure if the virus poses a threat to their four-legged friends. As of this summer, the CDC did not think that animals were involved in the spread of Zika virus. There has been no evidence that Zika is spread to people from contact with animals, nor have there been any reports of pets or other types of animals becoming sick with Zika. The only animal ever known to have experienced Zika spontaneously was a monkey with a mild fever in the Zika Forest of Uganda in the 1940s. Primates have the ability to become infected, says the CDC, but only a few experiments have ever presented any symptoms. There is also limited evidence from a

Out with the old, in with the new This year has certainly been one for changes and new beginnings for us all, and as each year passes, I reflect back on my life during the past twelve months and think about how I can make things better in the new year. We begin with Senior a new president and orner all the changes that come with that. There has been a lot of controversy and people at odds with each other over our choices this time, more than any other national election in Marla my life. It seemed like Luckhardt everyone was eagerly waiting for November to come and go, so we could move on with our lives and stop the bickering. Endless campaign ads and mudslinging would be done with, and the holidays could begin, promoting healing and kindness. The lighthearted spoofs on

C

“Saturday Night Live” and other latenight shows made their attempts to ease the tension, but even those caused some anger and resentment. I personally found most of it pretty amusing and appreciated letting some of the air out of the exploding balloons of hate and plugging up the rivers of meanness. No matter what my personal choices were, I wish our country well and will always support any president as our commander in chief. It’s what we need to do to heal as a nation. To the other countries around the world, I wish you peace and hope that we can all just try and get along. Yes, it’s me again, Pollyanna! We also look back on are those we have lost to numerous things like ill health, accidents and, sadly, violence. The daily news broadcasts show us all of the famous people who have passed, leaving us with a genuine sense of loss, even though we did not personally know them. The impact certain actors or singers made on our lives resonates with memories, as we think of

how they affected us with their work. I’ve had the privilege and honor to work with and get to know many amazing seniors, and as I said to goodbye to each one this past year, I left a small piece of my heart with them. I hope I changed their lives just a little bit for the better. I know they changed mine. As a grandparent, watching my grandchildren grow is about the most incredible part of the yearly journey. I see most of them often, so the growth is subtle until I pull out the old pictures and shriek with despair. Where did my babies go? Life happens. I’m grateful for the pictures, but thrilled that they are blossoming like healthy flowers, soaking up the rays of life. As a daughter, I thank God for every year that I still have my mom. She is really quite unaware of the joy she brings, not only to me, but to our entire family. Everyone who knows my mom and me has observed the rollercoaster of our year in 2016. Her stamina and remarkable courage far outweighs the trials she has been put

through physically, and for that, I am extremely thankful. Dec. 18 was my 34th-wedding anniversary with Grandpa. He always makes me laugh, but this year at 7 a.m., he wished me happy anniversary, dressed in a full tiger costume and holding a sign. We had a great weekend of fun, celebrating with family and friends. His support and love did not dwindle in 2016, as he stood by my side with everything that life threw at us. We both look forward to 2017. Last but not least, I’m very humbled and delighted to be able to share another year of my stories with you. From my heart, I wish to thank all of my readers once again for a fabulous slew of kind emails and phone calls. I made new friends through my articles and want to wish you all a safe, healthy, happy and joyful New Year’s Day! My least favorite Christmas tradition Story time for 2017 I am all for Christmas traditions, but one tradition I could live without is the Secret Santa exchange that seems to exist in every work place, classroom and family gathering. Our family has a Christmas party every year that Hangin’ in includes this exchange among the cousins. here There are 16 cousins, ranging in age from 9 to 28, and they all live in different parts of the country. Sadly, we do not get together very often, so the cousins Vicki don’t know a whole McKenna lot about each other, which makes gift giving a bit challenging. Gift cards are discouraged, which makes it even tougher. This year was especially hectic, and as usual, I was in charge of buying the gifts for the five cousins my kids were given. Time was running out, the party was nearing and I had four of the kids taken care of, but one remained. My nephew Andrew, who has recently graduated from Chico State College, is one of my favorite nephews. He is a goodlooking kid and strikes me as kind of a party guy. He lives in San Diego, so I don’t see him much. While shopping at Safeway, the gift card rack really beckoned to me. The party was the next day, and I had no clue what to get him. I scanned the gift cards. Barnes and Noble didn’t seem right, nor did The Cheesecake Factory. Suddenly, there it was! The perfect gift for a good-looking, single, party guy – a Hooters gift card! I could imagine it in my head! All the cousins gathered around, opening their sweatshirts and scarves, and then Andrew

T

would extract from his bag a Hooters gift card! All the other cousins would surely laugh and howl and make barking dog sounds. Andrew would love it and love me, his ‘so cool’ Aunt Vicki! Now I couldn’t wait for the party. I put the gift card in the bag with an oversized Hershey bar just for good measure and stuffed the bag with tissue. Who wouldn’t love that? Off to the party we went. I was planning on snapping a photo at the exact moment he caught sight of the gift card. This was going to be awesome! The party was hopping, and all the cousins were arriving. My nephew Chris had flown in from Peru, where he had been doing missionary work, and my niece Hanna had flown in from London after completing a study-abroad semester. Others had come from Georgia, Los Angeles and Chico. Food and cocktails were flowing, and finally, I spotted Andrew. I gave him a hug and asked him how life was going. The first thing he told me was that he was sorry I couldn’t meet his new girlfriend who was in Michigan. His eyes lit up and he couldn’t stop smiling as he talked about her. He went on and on about how he really missed her. A feeling of dread started to wash over me. Andrew sounded like he had one foot on the marriage alter already! It was time for the gift exchange. The cousins gathered around the Christmas tree and the gifts were doled out. I was still hopeful that my Hooters gift card would be a big hit. I watched as, one by one, the

cousins pulled their Warriors T-shirts and socks from their bags. I watched Andrew pull the Hershey bar out of his bag. He dug a little farther, and I saw him take a look at the gift card. My camera was poised and ready for the big moment. His expression was not at all what I expected – he looked as if he had discovered a dead rodent in his bag! He quickly shoved it back into the tissue. His sister came over and asked him what he got. He discreetly showed her his gift, and she rolled her eyes and made a disapproving face. I was horrified! I left the room. I wanted to crawl under a rock! Andrew’s dad came into the room, and I told him I thought I might have made a bad gift choice. When I told him it was a Hooters gift card, he looked at me and said, “To be honest, I think Andrew is going to be the first cousin to get married. Yeah, not a good choice.” I got my purse, scrounged together $25 in cash and sheepishly approached Andrew.” You’ve got a girlfriend now … you won’t be going to Hooters anytime soon,” I said, and took the gift card out of the bag and replaced it with the money. He looked relieved, laughed a little bit and gave me a hug, so my ‘cool Aunt Vicki’ status was hopefully restored. On the way home, my 21-year-old son, looking hopeful, asked, “So Mom, what are you gonna do with that Hooters gift card?” “It’s going in your Dad’s stocking,” I said. Ho! Ho! Ho! Who’s ready for a story? Brentwood Library’s first story-time session of 2017 has been scheduled. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 p.m., is Monthly Pajama Story Time for all ages, held inside the Brentwood Community Center on the second Tuesday of each month. Then, from Jan. 12 through March 2, the library will debut its new Thursday morning story times, including Baby and Toddler Time for kids up to 3 years, at 10:30 a.m., and Preschool Story Time for 3 to 5 years, at 11:30 a.m. Story times will be in a program room inside the community center, so watch for signs. Parking is available in the garage on City Park Way, next to Liberty High School, or on the street. Story time is a fun way to encourage a love of reading in your child, and to get them ready for school. A child’s brain is almost completely developed by age 5, so reading and enjoying other literacy activities can help a mind grow to its full potential. Most importantly, little bookworms are more likely to achieve success in school and careers. The Brentwood Library is located at 35 Oak St., inside the Brentwood Community Center, and is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday, from noon to 8 p.m. For more information, call 925-516-5290 or visit ccclib.org.

Patriots girls’ basketball team knocks off Dons by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

After 17 days off, the Heritage girls’ basketball team looked sluggish in the first half against Amador Valley at the one-day West Coast Jamboree Challenge this week, but the Patriots shook just enough of the rust off after halftime to squeak past the Dons 46-40. Sophomore guard Jordan Sweeney scored 19 points and senior guard Sunmi Da Silva added 15 to push the Patriots to 6-0 on the season, despite a flurry of turnovers in the first half. “We just didn’t play well, but good teams find a way to win when they don’t play their best,” said Heritage head coach Rob Ocon. The Patriots committed just five second-half turnovers, and Sweeney came alive with 15 secondhalf points to hold off the pesky Dons (7-2). After leading by only two after a quarter and three at halftime, Heritage closed out the final 1:21 of the third quarter on a 7-2 run to push its lead to 32-24 after three quarters. The tandem of guard Emily Tincher (six fourth-quarter points) and forward Nicole Riordan (five fourth-quarter points) helped Amador Valley stay within striking distance late, but the Dons couldn’t make a stop. Amador Valley pulled within three on a Tincher three with 38 seconds left, but Abigail Muse’s putback off a Jasmin Asher miss put

Heritage up 45-40 with nine seconds left. Sweeney, who scored nine of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, slammed the door with a free throw in the waning moments. Tincher finished with 11 points and Riordan added seven in the loss. “I thought we were a little flat, and the days off hurt us a bit, but in the second half, we got back to our brand of basketball, and it helped,” Ocon said. The Patriots’ game kicked off the one-day West Coast Jamboree Challenge, which preceded the three-day, 128-team West Coast Jamboree that was slated to take place at various East Bay locations, from Dec. 28 through 30. “A win is a win, but we have to compete better than that if we want to compete in the rest of the jamboree,” Ocon said. The one-day challenge featured 12 teams, including national powerhouses Clovis West (Fresno) and St. Mary’s (Stockton), regarded as the fourth and ninth teams in the nation, according to Maxpreps. com. Local squads slated to play in the West Coast Jamboree were Heritage, Deer Valley and Liberty. Results of the tournament were not available as of press time. Other results of the one-day challenge included Sacred Heart Cathedral knocking off Woodside Priory 74-49, Clovis West defeating Prairie (Washington) 73-31, St. Mary’s beating East High (Utah) 81-46 and Rincon Valley Christian sneaking past Buhach Colony 40-39. BVAL wrestlers show strong at home tournament by Michael Dixon Correspondent

Wrestlers from around California and parts of Nevada gathered at Liberty for two wrestling tournaments on Dec. 23 and 24. The Liberty boys took part in the Lou Bronzan Invitational, while the girls participated in the Brittany David Invitational. Other Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) wrestlers shined bright, but both Lions teams were the best in the area. The boys won their invitational, earning 204 points, with second place McQueen (Nevada) picking up 171. The Brittany David Invitational was won by Lodi’s Tokay High School. The Lions girls took ninth, first among BVAL schools and fifth among NCS teams. At least one Liberty boy placed eighth of the 14 different weight classes, but none was more successful than Adrian Chavez. He not only won the 182-pound class, but was also named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler for the heavyweight division. While no other Liberty wrestlers won their weight classes, Nate Paulson, Sergio Napoles and Wyatt Word each placed second in the 132-, 138- and 128-pound

Cade Martinez-Ignatov (fourth place, 120 pounds), Cole Gregerson (fifth place, 106 pounds), Cole Zanarini (seventh place, 152 pounds) and Estevan

Pittsburg also had three wrestlers place with Jerric Bato (fourth place, 152 pounds), Cristian Cruz (fourth place, 195 pounds) and Asia Chatman (sixth place, 192 pounds) taking the honors. A pair of wrestlers, Nolan Marchetti (eighth place, 106 pounds) and Javon Brown (eighth place, 132 pounds), placed for Freedom. Kenneth Lefin (second place, 113 pounds) placed for Antioch, while Oseyiomon Oiyemhonlan (seventh place, 182 pounds) placed for Deer Valley. Individually, the BVAL didn’t have any girls win their weight classes, but Liberty, Freedom, Deer Valley and Pittsburg all had two girls place in the top four of their respective weight classes. The Wildkatz followed up their State Cup win by knocking off the two top-ranked teams in California at the 2016 Mustang Winter Turf tournament. The West Coast Wildkatz played in the Premier Bracket of the Mustang Winter Turf tournament, which boasted seven of the top 10 teams in Northern California. The WildKatz took to the frosty turf to face MVLA 05 for the first game of tournament play. The WildKatz scored early in the game with a goal by Karlee Lywandowsky and held the lead throughout the game. WildKatz dominated play, but with just minutes left, MVLA scored, ending the game in a 1-1 tie. The WildKatz faced the DeAnza Force EGSL in game two. West Coast scored early in the first half with goals by Lywandowsky, Katie Strong and Maddie Flask. The WildKatz defense held the Force scoreless throughout the game, finishing with a solid 3-0 win. On day two of the tournament, the team faced secondranked Diablo FC in a physical and heated competition, but WildKatz prevailed with a goal by Katie Strong and held DFC scoreless to take the win 1-0 and secure a spot in the finals. West Coast WildKatz then met the top-ranked Ajax Green in the final and found themselves down 1-0 for the first time all weekend, but just before the end of the half, WildKatz

process,” Estrada said. “The Brown Act does not prohibit the board from discussing the financial implications of negotiations with its negotiating team in closed session. Attempts to mischaracterize these necessary, confidential planning sessions as a violation of law are unfortunate.” Estrada insists the district and board have been completely transparent in the budgeting process, meeting or exceeding the requirements of the Brown Act. Passed in 1953, this act guarantees the public’s right to attend and participate in meetings of local agencies. Any public agency that takes action in secret may have its actions voided. One of the points Bennetts is contending is the district’s projection of zero growth

in the next three years. Estrada maintains that, despite Kiper Homes’ building roughly 500 homes in The Lakes subdivision of Discovery Bay, student enrollment from that source is not as high as some expect. “The Lakes subdivision’s generation rate has been below the expected rate,” she said. “Currently, we have 107 students registered in our schools who live in the subdivision ... and the growth rate that can be attributed to Kiper Homes is averaging 16 students per year.” KESD Board President Tom Baldocchi is a Knightsen resident and father of two boys who attend Knightsen Elementary School. He hopes that mutually agreeable terms can be reached quickly. “I don’t see why we couldn’t plan for

be a voice for those people, who often end up working pretty much as case workers for their family members, especially those with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other severe mental illnesses.” While the chapter is currently headquartered in Pleasant Hill, Crowder, an Antioch resident, sees a need for the organization in East County. “One in four people are impacted by mental illness,” she said. “That remains true in every part of the nation, and I am striving to help give those people in East Contra Costa County a voice.” Personally affected by family members with mental illness herself, Crowder understands exactly how important community education and awareness can be. “Working with NAMI has increased my

growth,” Baldocchi said. “We like to be conservative, but I think that there is some leeway in some of those numbers. Maybe not as much as the teachers would like, but I think we can find some middle ground.” Baldocchi explained that the district’s method for creating future projections is extremely conservative, and the board has had very little discussion in changing those methods. That may change in the future, as the board will be discussing those methods at an upcoming meeting and reviewing the second interim budget before it is due to be sent to the county. “When we looked at that first budget, it had to be to the county the next day; we had no time to discuss it,” he said. “We want the sec-

ond report brought to us way ahead of the date it’s due to the county, to give us time to discuss it. The way we do our budget could be easily changed, but what the board sees and what the teachers want to see may not line up.” Now that the state has determined that both sides have reached a stalemate, a mediator will be sent from the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) to facilitate further discussion between the Knightsen teachers and administration. Knightsen is a small district, with only two schools and 31 educators working for about 600 students. Starting teacher salary is $46,630, about $3,400 less than a starting credentialed teacher would get in the neighboring district of Byron.

empathy and understanding when dealing with members of my family,” she said. “We realize that the challenges of mental illness do not only affect an individual’s family members but also friends, teachers, neighbors, coworkers and others in the community. Part of our outreach includes family-to-family training and education opportunities for the faith community and businesses. We want to make sure everyone has a better understanding of mental illness, what it means to live with it and how to deal with it.” The organization also offers classes for families, partners and friends of military service members and veterans experiencing a mental health challenge; recovery education courses for anyone experiencing a mental health challenge; classes for line staff at facilities providing mental health treatment services; in-school presentations designed to

teach middle and high school students about recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental illness; support groups; and outreach- and advocacy-training programs. As the organization grows its presence with the hiring of an executive director specifically for Contra Costa, those seeking help or wishing to help others are encouraged to reach out as quickly as possible. “We need the whole community to come together to better understand mental illness and reduce the stigmatization of those who have it,” Crowder said. “We want to increase the availability of resources for them and for their families where they can access it – in their communities, at their churches, nonprofits and businesses. Everyone’s help is needed to accomplish that.” For more information, call 510-990-2670 or visit www.nami.org.
