itness trends vary, and this year, high-intensity interval training, group training, yoga and bodyweight training are all at the top of the list.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is the most popular fitness trend this year because it burns a maximum number of calories in a short amount of time. HIIT is a cardio workout composed of short bursts of intense exercises lasting anywhere from 20 to 90 seconds, followed with bursts of less-intense exercises, which allow your body to have time to recover before you bounce back to more intense exercises. Typical HIIT workouts last 30 minutes, making it very convenient for people with busy schedules. see Trends page 6B

eople used to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their meals to maintain a healthy
diet. Today, things have changed. From superfoods and supplements to probiotics and gluten-free diets, healthy eating has come a long way from an apple a day to keep the doctor away. The Heath Hut in downtown Brentwood is a health food store with a modern approach to nutrition. Besides addressing physical health, the Health Hut offers products to improve one’s overall well-being. “Modern society has become more stressed and anxious, so these conditions need to be addressed if we are to remain functional and healthy,” said Sandra Hart, Health Hut clerk. “More health research has been done, and our distributors supply us with supplements that can overcome these problems.” The local health food store offers a selection of herbal and homeopathic vitamins; mineral supplements; remedies for children and adults; gluten-free foods; local

raw bee pollen and honey; probiotics; hemp hearts; Dr. Oz-recommended weight-loss products; high-quality flax seed; essential and carrier oils; and other products that promote good health. According to Hart, good health starts in your gut and can be improved with probiotics. “We are only as healthy as our gut, and we need to feed the good bacteria, so they are not overcome by the bad bacteria,” she said. “This is very important, especially as we age, so our immune system functions properly. In modern society, this is critical to our longevity.” Brentwood resident Lisa Richmond uses
probiotics to improve her health. “Probiotics were instrumental in helping me recover from some medical issues I was having, and I continue to take them to stay healthy,” said Richmond. Besides probiotics, there is a new superfood hitting the shelves. Moringa is an ancient plant rich in nutrients and antioxidants that historically has been used in Asia and Africa for its reputed health benefits, which include reducing inflammation. The Health Hut sells products that contain Moringa, including Bio Nutritional dried organic powder. “Moringa leaves are a complete source of protein and have many nutritional
benefits,” said Hart. “It can be used for an active lifestyle and contributes to overall health.” Ayurvedic foods are another popular type of health food. Ayurveda is India’s practice of holistic medicine, which combines certain foods and herbs together to balance a person’s overall health, digestion and immunity. Ayurvedic foods can be used to battle weight loss, sleep disorders, digestion issues, stress, anxiety, depression and other ailments. The Health Hut offers a few Ayurvedic specialty brands, including Organic India and Triphala. Another health trend that has been around for a few years is drinking vinegar, which is believed to help with detoxifying the body and weight loss. “Drinking apple cider vinegar with honey is alkalizing and is good in salads with olive oil,” said Hart. A few of the Health Hut’s most popular products are local honey and recent CBD (cannabidiol) hemp products. “The benefits of honey are that it can be used year-round to prevent pollen allergies,” said Hart. “The hemp oil, salve and muscle gels help many diseases and the pain and inflammation they cause.” The Health Hut is located at 161 Chestnut St., in downtown Brentwood. fingers and toes. This summer, people are opting for a more natural approach to nails in bright and vivid colors. “People don’t want to use harsh chemicals on their hands and nails anymore,” said Ladybug Nails manager Tina Nguyen. “We offer organic nails with no chemicals that dry in the air and contain calcium and vitamin E.” According to Nguyen, bright and bold neon colors are very popular, but for those who aren’t sure what color to go with, a classic French manicure in pink and white is perfect for summer. With sandal season upon us, pedicures are also in, featuring scents like lavender, mango, cucumber, jasmine, honeydew and other scents that are reminiscent of a beach vacation. When it comes to hair, highlights including balayage continue to be popular, but solid colors are also making a comeback, including platinum blonde. Single, one-dimensional colors are easier to maintain, and besides icy blonde, darker shades of

They are also cheaper than getting highlights.” As always, highlights and balayage are a great way to give your hair a sun-kissed look.
Balayage highlights are painted on, giving the appearance that the sun has naturally lightened your hair. “Balayage highlights are great, especially on virgin hair,” said Galloway. “You paint the hair with hair color, and since it’s not right at the root, you don’t have to come in and have it redone every few weeks. Trends from page 3B last the whole summer before you need a touch-up.” When it comes to summer cuts, the shag and bangs are making a comeback. This summer’s shag is a no-fuss hairstyle with a side part and natural layers. Long bangs are also popular, which can be brushed or clipped back. Boys’ hairstyles are also no-fuss for summer, which differs from popular girls’ styles, which are full of bright colors. “Long hair and fantasy colors, using extensions or actual colors, are popular with girls,” said Kim Solarski, Tangles Salon manager. “Mermaid colors are also very popular.” For boys, short and clean styles are in. “Popular boys’ cuts are shaved on the lower part of the head, longer on top and are often swooped to the side,” said Solarski. Finally, no summer look is complete without makeup. From dewy natural looks to sunset eyes, this summer’s makeup trends are dreamy. Nude looks are this summer’s go-to for makeup. Ditch the eyeshadow and stick with a good moisturizer and sunscreen, which will not only offer protection from the sun’s rays but will also give your skin a dewy look. Pairing it with a lip stain and mascara completes the simple, natural look. Another makeup trend is to give your face a sun-kissed appearance. “For the perfect summer sun-kissed makeup look, try our jojoba foundation for a weightless secret veil of color that will give you a natural radiance,” said Patricia

Barreda-LoPiano, owner of MADE Cosmetics. “Try a Candleglow foundation to add a kiss of sunlight and to highlight and accent your features; a lavender stick to awaken your eyes; a blushed lip and cheek stain for flirty cheeks and a rose pout bronzer for a natural, sunless tan.” Barreda-LoPiano also recommends using a 24/7 lip treatment to promote collagen while keeping your lips healthy and hydrated. Trends from page 1B “I thought I was fit until I did my first HIIT workout over two years ago,” said Brentwood resident Ryan Dourgarian. “I was blown away by the intensity of the workout.” According to Dourgarian, one of the biggest benefits to a HIIT workout is the EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) effect, which allows your body to continue to burn calories long after your workout is complete. For those needing a little motivation when they hit the gym, group training is the trend to check out. Group training or fitness classes, combine five or more people and are designed to be motivational and appropriate for multiple fitness levels. The extra perk is that they’re also social, so you might even make a few friends. “The main benefits to group training are motivation, accountability and camaraderie,” said Matthew Johnson, owner of I Love Kickboxing in Brentwood. “Group training pushes you harder, with others supporting you directly and indirectly; helps with accountability, because you are part of a team; and provides camaraderie, because it’s social and you’re amongst people with like interests who share a common goal of fitness.” If you don’t want to hit the gym and don’t own any equipment, body-weight training is a trend that can help you tone
and build strength. Body-weight training uses your own body weight during exercises, such as squats, lunges and push-ups. “Body-weight training is really simple and can be done almost anywhere, as you are using your own body weight to build muscle and burn fat,” said Johnson. Those looking for a workout that will improve their physical health and improve their mental health and relieve stress can try yoga. “The benefits of having a regular yoga practice are endless,” said Stacia McConnell, manager of Bliss Hot Yoga. “It improves your flexibility, builds muscle strength, increases blood flow, makes you happier, helps you focus, lowers blood sugars, improves your balance, releases tension in your limbs and much more.” The last workout trend of 2018 – personal training – is perfect for people looking for a personalized workout routine. Personal training not only helps people reach their fitness goals but also provides motivation and feedback from a licensed professional. Bliss Hot Yoga is located at 5865 Lone Tree Way, Suite L, in Antioch. For more information, call 925-732-7803 or visit www.bliss-hotyoga.com. Checking on your health DAWNMARIE FEHR
A
midst the hurry of our daily lives, it can be easy to let some things slide off the to-do list.
One thing that should always stay near the top is our health. In addition to your yearly visit, your doctor will recommend other health screenings based on your age and gender. In some cases, where health and family history indicate, your doctor may recommend screenings at an earlier age. For adults between the ages of 18 and 39, the list is fairly short. Most adults should have an eye exam every five years, and both men and women should visit a dermatologist each year for a skin exam. Dr. Robert Beer of Balfour Dermatology in Brentwood said that skin exams are more important now than ever and often covered by insurance companies. “Skin cancer can affect people at a very early age,” Beer explained. “Other cancers develop over time, but skin cancer can affect teenagers and those in their 20s and 30s.” Women should begin getting a pap smear every three years between the ages of 18 and 30, then every five years after age 30, provided the results are normal. Men should be screened for lipid disorders every five years starting at age 35. Any individuals who are sexually active
should be tested annually for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV and syphilis. At age 40, the list grows. Women should have a mammogram when they turn 40; beginning at age 50, they should have one every two years. Men who turn 40 should have a conversation with their doctor about testicular and prostate cancer screening, as experts differ in opinion on the necessity of screenings and self-exams. Once you turn 40, you should have an eye exam every two to four years. At age 55, that should increase to one to three years. At age 50, everyone’s favorite test should be scheduled: a colorectal cancer screening. At age 75, women can discuss with their doctor the benefits and limitations of continuing with their mammograms. This is all in addition, of course, to those dental cleanings every six months. Dentists are looking for more than cavities when they dig around in your mouth. “There’s lots of things your mouth will tell us, like if you’re anemic or diabetic,” said Debbi Edgar, a dental hygienist with over 30 years of experience in Antioch. “We do a visual exam and palpitate the tissue looking for joint pain, arthritis and lumps or bumps that can be cancerous.” As you develop your health-conscious to-do list, keep in mind that certain exams are costly and sometimes unnecessary. Talk to your doctor about which ones you can forego.
