and regularly visiting the dentist can lead to better overall health, as well as a beautiful smile. Miller & Simarro Dental Care in Antioch helps its patients stay healthy by providing state-of-the-art, high-quality dental care in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. “Preventative care is the biggest thing people can do to maintain their oral health, by getting their teeth cleaned and examined every six months,” said Mark W. Miller, DDS. The dental practice is comprised of three dentists – Miller, who has more than 41 years of experience treating patients; Ryan Simarro, DMD; and Nathan Simarro, DDS, all of whom grew up in Antioch. As children, twin brothers Ryan and Nathan were patients of Miller, and when Ryan found out he was looking for a busiON THE COVER: Ryan Simarro, Mark Miller and Nathan Simarro make up the team of Miller & Simarro Dental Care in Antioch. including Lumineers, dental veneers, teeth whitening, Invisalign, composite fillings, allon-four dentures, permanent dental bridges, dental implant restorations and dental crowns. Their office is modern, warm and inviting, with a friendly staff that makes their patients feel right at home. State-of-the-art equipment, including digital X-rays and intraoral cameras, makes once-uncomfortable procedures quick and easy. “They are always up to date with tech-
nological advances and are very well organized,” said Pittsburg resident Steve Nicolas, who has been seeing Miller since 1997. “My front teeth used to be jagged and had a gap in the center. Dr. Miller gave me a milliondollar smile. I get compliments all the time.” Other patients are drawn to the practice for their customer service and comforts. “They are so great at putting you at ease,” said Antioch resident Ruth Buchanan. “Your comfort comes first. They are the best dentists I have ever gone to.” Taking care of patients’ dental needs and building lifelong friendships is what Miller has enjoyed most about his career. “I have been blessed to help many people in the community and save their teeth for their lifetime,” he said. A key component to having a smile that lasts a lifetime is knowing what to avoid that could cause harm to your teeth. “One of the most common things I see that people overlook regarding their dental care is the habitual use of high sugar or high acid-content foods,” said Ryan. “People who are drinking these sugar-filled energy drinks or have habits of using breath mints, candy, gum or chewing lemons are destroying their enamel and getting cavities. Rejuvenate, repair your skin at Planet Tan
R
AMY SCHRADER ed-light therapy, a technology developed by NASA, has become the latest trend in
many tanning salons and health-care clinics, which are utilizing this light to repair damaged skin. The therapy started out as an experiment for plant growth, which showed red light-emitting diodes were a viable light source for growing plants during space flights. Since wounds don’t heal well in zero-gravity situations, NASA applied the same technology for healing wounds. Again, the results were positive. By March 3, 2011, NASA reported the red-light technology successfully reduced 96 percent of tested cancer patient’s side effects from radiation and chemotherapy.
Since then, doctors have been using redlight therapy to heal wounds; treat side effects from radiation, chemotherapy, chronic joint pain and other illnesses; and for cosmetic purposes. Planet Tan, in Brentwood, offers this cutting-edge technology in addition to other therapies that improve your skin’s health, leaving it looking and feeling younger. “Red-light therapy has so many great benefits, such as helping to reduce acne, reduce the appearance of cellulite, pain and much more,” said Shelley Wieland, who owns three Planet Tan salons with her husband, Steve. “Red-light therapy is also 100 percent safe and FDA approved.” During a red-light therapy session, the body’s blood flow increases, which stimulates circulation and repairs elastin fibers that make skin firm. Collagen is stimulated and inflammation is decreased, which helps
control the body’s natural healing capabilities. The result is repaired skin; reduced wrinkles and fine lines; reduced scarring; evened-out skin pigmentation; a reduction of bacteria that causes acne and age spots; a reduction of cellulite; and an improvement in skin tone and firmness. The best results are achieved over a four- to six-week period of three sessions per week. “Planet Tan’s red-light therapy is amazing,” said Brentwood resident and professional body builder Lisa Romiti. “The way the texture of my skin feels and the tone is incredible. I even noticed a difference in my hair. I have also received so many compliments on my skin since I started using it.” Besides using the therapy, Romiti also uses the salon’s hydration station to keep her skin looking radiantly healthy. A hydration station combines sophisticated technology with natural techniques to
blanket skin in vitamins and moisture. The process revives, rejuvenates, cleanses and balances skin, leaving it looking soft, supple and beautiful. “The hydration station leaves me feeling refreshed and phenomenal,” said Romiti. In addition to the hydration station and red-light therapy, Planet Tan offers the most up-to-date, high-pressure tanning beds, UV tanning beds, teeth whitening, mystic tan and air-brush tanning in all of their locations. Brentwood’s Planet Tan is located at 2430 Sand Creek Road, Suite 2. The Wielands also own Planet Tan salons in Discovery Bay and Antioch (Deer Valley Road). For more information, visit www.planettancalifornia.com or call 925-634-9000. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.
The CDC recommends people 65 or older – who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions – need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strength-training activities
that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit, older people with no pre-existing health conditions are capable of these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activ-
ity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity coupled with strength training may also provide adequate physical activity for aging men and women.

Physical therapy at your doorstep
P
hysical therapy can change your life, but it can also be inconvenient.
Driving to and from appointments several times a week, finding time in a busy schedule and requesting time off from work can cause so much stress some people opt out of receiving the therapy they need. Taylor’d Physical Therapy and Wellness takes the inconvenience out of physical therapy by providing personalized services onsite, including at homes, work places, gyms, stores, golf courses or any desired location. “A lot of people have busy lives and don’t have time to go to outpatient therapy,” said Heather Taylor, licensed physical therapist and owner of Taylor’d Physical Therapy and Wellness. “I want people to have the care they need in the environment they want, without breaking the bank.” Taylor, who has a master’s degree in physical therapy, spent 12 years as both a home health-therapist service provider and a physical therapist before she started her own business. She has experience in orthopedics, sports injuries, work-related injuries (including repetitive stress injuries), geriatrics, home health ergonomics and body mechanics. She observed not only how inconvenient traditional physical therapy could be for some people, but also how the settings seemed to be defined by doctors, instead of the clients. This motivated her to start her own practice – creating customized care programs for each client.
“I ask my clients what they gave up that was most important to them and what they want to be able to do again,” said Taylor. “Then, I tailor therapy to their specific needs in a specific environment that helps them achieve their goals.” Discovery Bay resident Ron Payton set a goal of regaining mobility after suffering congestive heart failure. According to his daughter, Penny Hicks, doctors did not expect him to survive long after he was discharged from the hospital. “We wanted more for him and knew he wanted more as well,” said Hicks. “He has never been one to sit around and always enjoyed long walks by the lake.” According to Hicks, Taylor started therapy with her father in their home, as well as outside. As a result of the customized therapy, he was eventually able to walk long distances with a cane, which they never thought would happen. “Heather is amazing,” said Hicks. “She is so good at motivating her clients and is personable and knowledgeable, and she treats the whole person, not just their physical needs.” One of the reasons Taylor is able to offer such customized care is because she doesn’t work with insurance companies, Medicare or workers comp. “It gives me the freedom to work outside of the restrictions of insurance companies and provide more individualized care,” said Taylor, who added that her services are affordable. “My clients are getting a good value with each visit. I assess and reassess individualized therapy during each session.” For more information, visit www. taylordphysicaltherapyandwellness.com or call 925-382-2143. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

to schedule their appointments more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states about onethird of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along, so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment.
